A spooky nerd, if you will. πŸ€”: How do you relate to the gothic? If not the gothic (it's okay!), what are you a nerd for? πŸ•· πŸ“Έ: 'Triptyque de'l Apocalypse' (detail), Jacobello Alberegno, 1390. The politicisation of a teenaged comic book witch is okay with me; I'm all for new interpretations and fair representation. It is nostalgic viewing for any Hart generation fans. It is stuffed with historical and literary references sure to delight any spooky nerd, and is dripping with delicious γ€ο»Ώο½ο½…ο½“ο½”ο½ˆο½…ο½”ο½‰ο½ƒγ€‘. It adds darkness and depth without a shred of subtelty - it is opulent and indulgent, and wonderfully so. All of this melodrama I can stand. The incessent inverted blaspheming - "What the heaven?" Surely blaspheming is more hellish? The fact that sassy Salem, the true star of Sabrina the Teenage Witch, is silenced - cat got your tongue? All of this, I can merrily endure, but something happened in the last season that I don't know if they can recover from - that *I* can recover from... Something truly horrific and utterly unjustified: they sang. πŸ•· Everything began to unravel when Sabrina the SPAWN of SATAN, rightful QUEEN of HELL joins a cheer squad. The ridiculousness of that sentence offends me. But not as much as the singing itself. Obviously, I am being dramatic... But really, the singing needs to stop. πŸ€”: Where do you stand on CAOS, and on the unspeakable singing? πŸ“Έ: Lilith, the one true queen. I offer to you '5 Short Graybles' (a who, what, why, when, where of Generally Gothic): πŸ•·My name is Hannah, & I am an adult human. πŸ•·I am from one country run by a straw-haired buffoon, & live in another country run by a straw-haired buffoon. πŸ•·To, I imagine, the displeasure of both aforementioned buffoons, I am half Middle-Eastern; that half of me presents predominantly as hair. πŸ•·My journey with the gothic began, around the age of 7, when I picked up a cloth-bound book with no title & locked myself in the bathroom devouring Edgar Allan Poe's 'The Tell-Tale Heart' sat cross-legged on the floor. πŸ•·My formal gothic studies ended on the grounds and within the walls of Horace Walpole's Strawberry Hill House, but one day I may return to an institution to gather some more letters (the little h, big p and d). Until then, I am a spooky nerd without affiliation. I hope you stick around as I stare deeper into the gothic, & the generally so; you are a very welcome collective someone to shout my findings back to, & with whom to engage in discussion. Wholeheartedly, I thank you πŸ–€. As always, I am open to requests, collaborations, submissions, & suggestions. And perhaps if I reach 1k I will think about turning around... πŸ“–Bonus | Reading Recommendation: The latest issue of @CoffinBellJournal (of which I am associate editor) is out now! πŸ”—: Link in bio. *I phrased the options that way. Fear not, it's a throwback. Sorry I've been absent; I fell down a rabbit hole of criticism on Keats. The good news is that I've returned with gifts. I had intended to publish a very quick photo-essay - a tour of Romantic poet, John Keats', former home in Hampstead, London... but I got a little lost (merrily, I might add) in research. I still offer the visual tour, it just happens to now be accompanied by a biography of his later years via the Sublime, Dante, and Radcliffe! Yay(?) πŸ€“! Today, I was lucky enough to (by which, I mean 'avoided adult responsibility long enough to') finish 'Jamiaca Inn' in the cool morning air, and later start Baudelaire's 'The Flowers of Evil' under indoor darkness. In 2 out of the 2 poems I've read thus far, Baudelaire has painted images of dancing women, which brought this Voltaire quote to mind. I read it, years ago, on a paper bag from @shakespeareandcoparis (which I have kept to this day), that has also (along with any bookshop I have ever loved) been on my mind today πŸ–€. As I do not, without searching, know the source of the quote, I will instead recommend Voltaire's 'Candide' (1759). It has been years (a decade?!) too, since I read it, but I still name it amongst my favourites. I fail to recall any gothic elements within it, but I think, now more than ever, a blasphemous little satirical comedy can be excused! πŸ€”: What are you reading today, and which texts are amongst your wild card, off-brand favourites? . #generallygothic #gothic #worldbookday #worldbookday2020 #shelfie #bookshelf #bookcase #voltaire #candide #frenchliterature #paris #baudelaire #charlesbaudelaire #classicliterature #bookshop #bookstore #shakespeare #shakespeareandcompany #satire #jamaicainn #gothicnovel #englishliterature #bookstagram #spookynerd #darkacadmiaaesthetic #darkacademia #typewriter #daphnedumaurier #darkpoetics #readersofinstagram https://www.instagram.com/p/B_WI2MxgEKf/?igshid=j7kew8gfkaa2

Her novel, 'Jane Eyre', is a gothic classic, and an important work of female writing. It is often quoted, and referenced, and marks the birth of the madwoman in the attic. On the way to becoming a novelist, however, BrontΓ« was a poet. She had periods of great productivity: as a young teen writing a magical world of fantasy, as a young teacher displaying realism and reflection... And as a woman, in earnest, she sent a collection of her poetry to England's poet laureate, Robert Southey. Representative of his tone throughout, a portion of Southey's response is quoted above. She kept his letter, filing it β€œSouthey’s Advice | To be kept forever.” Personally, I like to imagine that it lit a fire beneath her, rather than discouraging her... In 1846, 'Poems' was published - a collection equally representing the work of Charlotte, Emily, and Anne. The collection sold badly. The following year, 'Jane Eyre' was published, after which, BrontΓ« turned her hand at poetry only upon her sisters' deaths - these three unfinished poems, in their skeletal form, are perhaps her most gothic. πŸ‘‰: Head to stories to read 'On the Death of Anne BrontΓ«'. πŸ•· πŸ“œ: Read my review of 'Jane Eyre', on the blog. πŸ”—: Link in bio πŸ•· πŸ€”: Did anyone else watch the @nationaltheatre's (UK) adaptation of 'Jane Eyre'? She was a recluse, imprisoned by her womanhood. A ghost, haunting the homestead dressed, famously, in white. A witch, in her gardens, observing the minutiae of nature. Secluded and sensative, a witness to death. A lady of letters, imagination, distress... And, though traditionally classed as exisiting between Romanticism and Realism, the tropes of the gothic are prevalent in her poetry too. Dungeons, and death, ghosts, and goblins, melodrama and melancholy... many signifiers of the gothic, are there, bleeding through her writing. I've been asked before, on here, where to begin with Dickinson, and honestly, I think anywhere would work. Her poems are packed full of emotion, but stylistically, they are sparse. The beauty, and the terrors, of reality are interjected, frequently, with dashes of various size and purpose. As a result, Dickinson's poems are short and punchy, allowing you regular space to pause, insert your own experience into punctuated gaps, or fly through the lines like a speeding train of thought. πŸ€”: I have two questions for you today. Firstly, the question I have past received: Do you have a favourite collection, or poem, by Dickinson? And secondly, the TV show... I've seen memes, and I'm worried.
