KEATS HOUSE E JOHN KEATS

Keats House é uma residência, construída entre 1814 e 1816, onde viveu o poeta romântico John Keats no início do século XIX. O edifício era, originalmente, um par de casas geminadas conhecidas como “Wentworth Place” e foi unificado em 1838-39. John Keats viveu em um desses edifícios com seu amigo Charles Brown, entre os anos de 1818 a 1820. Acredita-se que estes foram os  anos mais produtivos de Keats, nos quais ele escreveu algumas de suas mais importantes obras literárias. Keats foi uma das principais figuras da segunda geração de poetas românticos, junto com Lord Byron e Percy Bysshe Shelley.

Durante os anos que morou na casa, ele se apaixonou e ficou noivo de Fanny Brawne, que morava com a família na casaco lado. Entretanto, eles nunca chegaram a se casar, uma vez que Keats adquiriu tuberculose e ficou cada vez mais doente. Pensando em sua saúde, ele foi aconselhado por médicos a buscar lugares com clima mais quente. Assim, Keats deixou Londres em 1820 e se mudou para Itália. Ele morreu solteiro, em 1821, com apenas 25 anos de idade.

Embora seus poemas não tenham sido bem recebidos pelos críticos durante sua vida, sua reputação cresceu após sua morte e, no final do século XIX, ele havia se tornado um dos mais admirados poetas ingleses. As obras de Keats influenciaram diversos outros escritores ingleses das gerações seguintes. Atualmente, seus poemas são alguns dos mais populares e mais analisados ​​na literatura inglesa. Algumas das obras mais aclamadas de Keats são “Ode to a Nightingale”, “Sleep and Poetry” e o famoso soneto “On First Looking into Chapman’s Homer”.

COMO É A VISITA À KEATS HOUSE

Eu fiquei super curiosa para conhecera casa de Keats depois de assistir ao filme “Brilho de uma Paixão” (2009), que concorreu ao Oscar de Figurino, e conta a trágica história de amor entre ele e Fanny Brawne. Assim, durante um passeio pelo bairro de Hampstead, aproveitei para visitar a residência. Keats House Museum abriu como um museu em 1931. Chegando ao local, há um belo jardim, em que se pode ver a casa e o detalhe da placa que indica que Keats morou ali. A entrada para o museu é feita por trás da casa, onde fica a bilheteria em um dos cômodos a serem visitados.

Pegue o mapa dos quartos da casa para visitar e comece a desbravar a casa. Há diversos itens expostos na Keats House como móveis e itens pessoais. Entre os artefatos estão o anel de noivado que Keats ofereceu a Fanny Brawne e uma cópia da máscara mortuária de Keats.

É possível visitar todos os cômodos, inclusive o subsolo, onde estão a cozinha e área de serviço. Em um dos cômodos do subsolo é exibido um filme que conta um pouco sobre a breve vida este incrível poeta. O museu organiza regularmente poesias e eventos literários e oferece uma variedade de instalações educacionais. Além da casa, no prédio ao lado há uma biblioteca, “Ten Keats Grove”, que abriu em 2002 e é administrada por voluntários.

JARDIM

No jardim da propriedade, há uma ameixeira que acredita-se ser do século XVII. Como havia outras árvores frutíferas nos terrenos da Keats House, a amoreira pode ter sido parte de um pomar. De acordo com Brown, amigo de Keats, o poeta escreveu “Ode to a Nightingale” debaixo desta ameixeira.
