Wei Wuxian: heavy breathing and gasping at first, then the more pleasure builds up, the more vocal he becomes (and the less coherent in his dirty talk). A lot of name- and title-calling and a lot of swearing. An oh! rather than ah! person. Dirty talks like 80% of the time, even if he's struggling to speak and moan at the same time. I don't like it when people write WWX and LWJ having drunk sex and then WWX immediately regrets it later and runs away because he thinks he took "advantage" of LWJ's inhibited state . The pining angst is just downright painful to read sometimes, and the separation period afterwards even more so.

It was LWJ who visibly rejected WWX at that moment when WWX said "Thank you" LWJ thought WWX was thanking him for the physical intimacy (which LWJ did not want their relationship to be just about give and take) instead LWJ misunderstood that thanks when WWX was about to confess!

Only then did WWX spiral into a depressive mood thinking he took advantage of LWJ, furthering the misunderstandings by saying that it was "normal" to do things between friends to spare himself of his feelings that he thought he misplaced.

The same could be said about LWJ. I recall some fics that portray LWJ regretting his drunk escapades thinking that he took advantage of WWX during his own drunken state. Then he too would run away leaving WWX. Making WWX think that LWJ regretted what happened between them and we're back to square one. Again, in the book/manhua LWJ was half asleep content and aware to be in WWX's arms I don't think he suddenly just got sober that instant WWX said thank you.

So yes, if it ever came down to a drunk first time sex WangXian would have gotten together much earlier if it wasn't for LWJ's misunderstanding not just WWX's. Give my Sunshine Boy a break he is obviously thrilled to share intimacy with LWJ in any context as long as LWJ physically shows to be accepting and reciprocating afterwards. People who are thinking of writing a drunken first sex scene between WangXian please don't make it anymore angsty than it should really be. It was fun to read once but now it's a little too repetitive and almost everywhere.

Oblivious!LWJ tag should be more common than Oblivious!WWX. But in truth they are neither oblivious. They just have piles of misunderstandings between them in canon. So this tag really shouldn't exist unless people really like giving them this personality trait.

okay so. I am a smart adult with many important responsibilities. I have good taste and care about things that matter. for this reason, I’ve been trying to identify where in cql canon wangxian manage to fuck.

because they definitely do; I like a good post-canon getting together fic as much as the next guy, but it’s just not realistic.

allow them. it’s already been so long.

(just like this goddamn post turned out to be, let’s do a cut)

right. so initially it looks like you could place this right after the time skip in episode 33, because it shows us that wwx is with lwj in cloud recesses. we know that he spent the night in the jingshi because he wakes up there the next morning before he goes for a nostalgic tour of his old school.

and also visits the cold spring, where lwj is mostly naked. nice.

but wait! wwx is surprised by the scars on his back and chest. that seems like something he would have known about if they’d already been naked together the night before, so I’m going to say they did not fuck immediately upon wwx’s return to cloud recesses. okay, fine, they’re taking things slow, that’s cool.

maybe they could work it into the next night, then. oh wait, lqr is injured and... staying in the jingshi? for reasons?

I don’t know why. he must have his own house in cloud recesses, and it’s probably at least as comfortable as lwj’s, but here he is. he lives to stop his nephew from getting laid, I guess.

the next day they do some Q&A with the kids and determine that they need to head to qinghe to figure out what’s going on with this sword thing. great! we love a romantic road trip, plenty of alone time. but they also have to do their jobs, and then jin ling needs to get rescued from a wall of dirt, and jc is unfortunately there being himself, and then they have to grill nhs about his tomb full of angry sabers, etc. etc.

with all that going on, their next obvious chance is at the inn immediately after interviewing nhs. this evening has already included:

wwx gazing lovingly at lwj from afar

lwj carrying wwx on his back

lwj pawing at wwx’s robes trying to deal with his cursed leg

lwj helping wwx up the stairs, serving him wine, fixing his flute, and generally being at his beck and call

a very sexy and homoerotic duet

and now they’re alone and drooling over each other as usual. this seems like a plausible spot, right?

it does! but no. after they go back to the nie basement o’ swords and hear the backstory on nmj’s death, we see them walking in yueyang and lwj asks wwx how the curse mark on his leg is doing. wwx says it’s almost healed, which may or may not be a lie, but his inner monologue says:

he’s more concerned about the wound on his arm from the sacrificing curse, which lwj doesn’t know about, because wwx won’t tell him and they still haven’t been naked together.

also, this silly teenage shit doesn’t make much sense unless they’re still dancing around each other.

you guys love the sound of opportunities as they go flying past, don’t you?

right after this, lwj gets drunk. I’m aware that Stuff Happens in the novel scene that inspired this bit, and they do incorporate some of that into the show by having lwj commit petty larceny and admit that he “likes rabbits” as part of the softest and most loving conversation in human history oh my god

but lwj goes to sleep right on time, and the next morning, wwx is laughing and reassuring him that nothing happened.

after this, it’s time to go on a fucked up field trip with the kids in yi city, so they don’t really have any time alone for a few episodes until they’ve finished that and everyone is back at yet another inn. I wonder if they learned something about wasted chances and poor communication from this miserable songxiao story?

maybe! look, they’re being cute and domestic. there are currently no material barriers preventing them from having sex, nor will there be any specific evidence later on proving that they didn’t.

but they’re still firmly in mystery-solving mode and the juniors and lxc are floating around. the vibe isn’t quite there. if I were to pick the most solid reason why I think they’re saving room for jesus at this point, it would be the tension that happens when wwx again asks how lwj recognized him. lwj asks why his memory is so bad, and wwx replies that he wishes he had a bad memory. even though they’re comfortable and happy being together, there’s still some fundamental distance remaining. there’s no sense of romantic resolution. that was actually a point against all their previous opportunities as well; they’re all very sweet, but none of these feel like the place in a story where the romantic leads Officially Get Together.

okay, off to koi tower! shit is getting extremely real. everyone’s busy insinuating that they recognize wwx, but no one is saying it explicitly. wwx isn’t supposed to be here. the guy he’s pretending to be also isn’t supposed to be here. he and his boyfriend and his boyfriend’s brother are trying to figure out if his boyfriend’s brother’s boyfriend is a murderer. no one is comfortable and the political intrigue leaves no time for fucking in front of anyone’s salad.

I guess there’s plenty of time to make dozens of armed guards and like half the people they know wait while they have a romantic moment, though.

could they be more in love? And that sure feels like a romantic resolution that might be followed by narratively-earned sex.

ah. no, unfortunately wwx gets stabbed again. this certainly sucks, but it does have the helpful consequence of making lwj take him back to cloud recesses, where they are mostly alone and as safe as they can be in the circumstances. now there’s even more tenderness and also some plot-justified touching and skin exposure. plus, lwj just made a very public declaration of love.

too bad wwx has probably been unconscious since he started coughing up blood in the forest near lanling. he’s also still visibly in pain. fresh abdominal wounds tend to kill the mood.

but hey, the injuries on this show are only as serious as they need to be to move the plot forward and facilitate gentle h/c scenes, so by evening he’s looking perfectly healthy and walking around under his own steam like nothing’s wrong. I guess that problem can be ignored moving forward.

lxc then offers the the most devastating highlights of lwj’s backstory, like, all at once. it’s nice that he includes a flute solo to give wwx a second to process this mountain of terrible information. what the fuck.

there he is! the most devoted man in the whole world! turns out they can actually be more in love after all.

This is Part I.

I. The First Time

It wasn’t exactly news that Lan Zhan was a bad drunk. No, Wei Ying had known that intersting little fact ever since Lan Zhan had accidentally drank some mystery alcohol when they had been in the first year of university, and Lan Zhan had ended up behaving very badly, indeed. Lan Zhan might not remember much of that night, but Wei Ying surely did. 

So, Wei Ying had known that they were in for an interesting time as soon as Lan Zhan’s lips had touched the rim of the glass. What was new, though, was Lan Zhan, half curled up in Wei Ying’s lap, his arms tightly curled around Wei Yings waist, his face sloppily pressed into Wei Ying’s stomach. He was mumbling something, but Wei Ying had no idea what he was saying. He looked over at Nie Huaisang a little desperately, hoping at least for some sympathy, but the traitor only shrugged and took another sip from his own wine glass (who used wine glasses at a dorm party, really), apparently uncaring of Wei Ying’s current predicament. 

“I think it’s time to bring that one home,” Nie Huaisang said, the tone of his voice clearly implying that it wasn’t going to be him who was going to bring Lan Zhan home. 

“Fine,” Wei Ying huffed, sending Nie Huaisang a sharp glare. “Let’s see if I ever help you out again when you’re on the verge of failing your classes.”

He shuffled around to get his legs under him, and rose to his feet with the added weight of a drunken Lan Zhan hanging off him like a limpet. 

“Come on, big boy,” he said as he balanced them both precariously. “You gotta stand on your own feet, I’m not going to carry you out of here.”

“Mn,” Lan Zhan replied, and finally decided that standing was a thing that he was still capable of.

Wei Ying’s relief was short-lived. Lan Zhan only used the chance to cling to Wei Ying all the more tightly, and Wei Ying had to fight a blush when Lan Zhan stuck his face into the nape of Wei Ying’s neck. (He! Blushing! What a thought!) 

With a sigh, Wei Ying left Nie Huaisang behind (rude gestures were exchanged in the process). He shuffled towards the entrance, shouting at Jiang Cheng to go home on his own as he passed him by. 

He could technically return to the party after bringing Lan Zhan to his room, but he wasn’t feeling it. Not to mention that he didn’t think that leaving a drunk Lan Zhan on his own was a good idea. Not after he had experienced drunk Lan Zhan once already, anyway. 

So he dragged Lan Zhan to the elevator, and dragged him all the way back to his room. He was nice about it, too. He was nice enough to carefully fish out the room keys out of Lan Zhan’s jacket, and then, once they were in Lan Zhan’s room, he stripped off Lan Zhan’s jacket and shoes, and guided him to his bed. 

Lan Zhan flopped onto the bed like a sack of potatoes, but he forgot to let go of Wei Ying in the process, and so Wei Ying ended up being pulled down, falling face-first onto the soft covers of Lan Zhan’s bed next to Lan Zhan. 

Before he even had the chance to complain, Lan Zhan had already wrapped himself around him like an octopus. 

Wei Ying wriggled experimentally, but no dice; Lan Zhan did not seem to have any plans to let him go anytime soon. 

“Lan Zhan,” he whined. “I’m not your teddy bear.”

“Nn,” Lan Zhan disagreed. “Mine.”

Wei Ying gaped. 

“Lan Zhan,” he gasped. “What the hell?”

“Wei Ying should be mine,” Lan Zhan declared. And then, “Sleep.”

Lan Zhan promptly followed his own advice, falling asleep almost instantaneously, Wei Ying still stuck in his embrace. 

Wei Ying stared at Lan Zhan with a dumbstruck expression that probably looked ridiculous. If Wei Ying had had any plans of sleep soon, they certainly wouldn’t be happening while Lan Zhan was clinging to him. Wei Ying looked at Lan Zhan’s suddenly still, relaxed face, and tried to make sense of Lan Zhan’s words. 

He must have meant that Wei Ying should be his friend. Wei Ying had made a habit of bothering the hell out of Lan Zhan ever since he had first laid eyes on him, but it had taken them quite a long time to become proper friends that deserved that label. And even then, they had never even talked about it. About being friends. 

Yes, that must have been what Lan Zhan had meant! He was finally able to acknowledge them as friends. Which was really great. 

Wei Ying waited in the half-darkness of the room until he was absolutely sure that Lan Zhan was deeply asleep and relaxed, and then carefully extracted himself from Lan Zhan’s hold. 

He should go prepare some painkillers for Lan Zhan. If he was such a lightweight, it might be enough for him to get a horrible hangover, as well. And he had to look for the blanket and pillow that Lan Zhan usually got out for Wei Ying whenever he stayed the night. 

And maybe, he should also attempt to reduce his heart rate in the meantime, after being in such close proximity with Lan Zhan for such a long time. Looking at a handsome face like Lan Zhan’s always made Wei Ying feel a little woozy if he did it for too long. 

It was an extremely handsome face, after all. 

“Good night, er-gege,” he murmured over his shoulder, not quite daring to look back, and went off to look for those painkillers.

When Wei Ying finally woke up the next morning, Lan Zhan was already awake. Clearly, he had kept himself busy by preparing a nice little breakfast for the two of them. 

“Mh, Lan Zhan,” Wei Ying murmured when he spotted the food on the little table in Lan Zhan’s room. “That smells so good. How are you feeling?”

“I do not remember us returning to my room yesterday,” Lan Zhan replied. “I have inconvenienced you. I apologise.”

And then he actually made a little bow. 

“Lan Zhan,” Wei Ying sighed, because Lan Zhan was never an inconvenience. If anything, it was the other way around. Wei Ying was the inconvenience. “I’m just glad you’re well. Don’t worry about remembering. It wasn’t that exciting, I just made sure that you returned to your room safe and sound.”

He tried not to feel any disappointment. It was better that Lan Zhan didn’t remember, honestly, because his behaviour yesterday would only embarrass him. 

There was absolutely no reason for doing that to Lan Zhan. 

So he reached for the food on the table, and opened his mouth to let out a stream of inconsequential chatter, and hoped that Lan Zhan couldn’t read the strange mood he was in. 

Of course Wei Ying was going to be Lan Zhan’s friend. Regardless of whether Lan Zhan himself remembered.

Restless Rewatch: The Untamed, Episode 01

Intro: 2020 continues to be much much too much while also being incredibly boring, and Im done with Shen Wei’s Lewks, so now I’m doing a deep meta dive into the Untamed. Let’s roll! 

Prologue: The Battle of Mordor

The Demise of our Protagonist

Unlike some other shows I won’t name, The Untamed kills its suicidal queer protagonist immediately, rather than waiting four seasons, so we know what we're in for. 

This is Wei Wuxian, who is about to yeet himself off of a cliff. He is having a bad day.

To be fair there are hardly any suicides in The Untamed. No more than ...five? As long as you don’t count the entire population of the Wen Corporate Headquarters in Yiling or those wall bandits in Qinghe or Madame Yu or all those Wens who supposedly threw themselves into the mud puddle or that Mo guy who broke his own neck. Plus watching Wei Wuxian’s cliff drop several more times from multiple angles. So, you know. Hardly Any Suicides. 

This is Lan Wangji, who is about to have his first losing encounter with physics. He is having a bad day.

In fact, if it is possible to have a worse day than the guy who is currently falling to his death, Lan Wangji is having that.

This is Jiang Cheng, who is feeling extra stabby from this camera angle. He is having a bad day.

The Amulet Situation

This is the Stygian Tiger Amulet. Yes, by all means, (Netflix) subtitles, let's use a 12-dollar word, “Stygian,” that every English speaker who is not a Shelley/Byron shipper will have to look up. Let’s not use a normal word like "deathly" or "corrupt" or you know... "Yin" which is clearly what they are saying on screen.

Why does this tiger amulet look like a chameleon crossed with a remora? Wei Wuxian can paint photorealistic bunnies on a flimsy lantern while sitting in a field having distracting teenage lust, but two months of meditating with super magic gets him a tiger that looks like a chameleon. And don’t try telling me this is a traditional-Chinese-art vibe because this jade tiger from frickin 1000 BCE is way more tigerish than Wei Wuxian’s attempt. 

Try harder next time, Wei Wuxian.

This is thousands of cultivators having a battle.  What do you mean, it looks like about 40-60 dudes?

 Any time someone in The Untamed refers to a number of people, it is like when you do your high school play and look off into the wings at nothing and say “Hark, A Ship Approaches!” and everyone’s parents nod indulgently.

The Present Day

Spilling All That Yiling Laozu Tea

Down at the Exposition Tea Shop, the Lan juniors are chilling and listening to Tea Dude tell the story of Yiling Laozu. 

How did they get permission to take this field trip? “Principal Qiran, we want to go downtown to hang out with the local rabble and learn about your favorite person, Wei Wuxian.”

Waiting in the wings is the man with a fan and a plan, Nie Huaisan(g), who is paying tall loot to get these stories told.  

...Why? Is Mo Xuanyu having tea here and listening? Or is Wei Wuxian being summoned back by hearing all this smack being talked about him? *Shrug.*

Gank Your Soul

Drunk flag guy out here talking about spirits. Wikipedia tells me that In one school of Daoist thought, a human being has a collection of physical souls (魄 pò) and ethereal souls (魂 hún). Drunk flag guy is saying “hún ” at the moment. 

The many types of souls don’t translate well into English, where spiritual vocabulary has always been shackled connected to Christian beliefs, and is too limited for this context. So when the subtitles have conversations like “Is it a soul eater? No, no, it’s a spirit taker!” just roll with it. (Speaking of hún, if you have any interest in linguistics, do yourself a favor and go read all the wonderful meta @hunxi-guilai​)

The spirit-carrying flag looks a lot like Raava and Vaatu from Korra which...probably doesn’t mean anything.

The Demise of our Trill Host

Suicide #2 happens about 8 minutes in. 

Mo Xuanyu is that hippie roommate with the annoying wind chimes and bead curtains and blood spatter.

He is super mad at his terrible family and also at Jin Guangyao, who sent him home to his terrible family. I wonder if Fan Man Nie Huaisang influenced Jiggy’s decision-making there. Mo Xuanyu’s choice to die for revenge might be excessive, given how easy it actually is to murder the Mo family.

Being Alive Is Fine I Guess As Long As I Get To Fuck WIth People

Wei Wuxian starts his new life by splashing a little water on his face, which instantly makes his hair go from this

to this. 

He looks at his reflection and wishes he was dead, which--mood--but he gets over it as soon as he finds someone whose day he can fuck up.

And he is ALL in on being crazy. 

OP wishes she had the Wei Wuxian kind of crazy instead of the kind she actually has. 

Meanwhile, this is the sane Mo cousin:

This asshole is wearing one of the best fabrics in the whole show, incidentally. Asshole.

My favorite bit of Wei-Mo craziness is when Wei Wuxian does a meaningless 360 all the way around this dude before ducking in the opposite direction, which is like when I make 4 right turns around a whole block to avoid making a single left across traffic.

Perhaps I Do Miss One Thing In This Life

Wei Wuxian has pining thoughts about Lan Wangji, so he plays WangXian on a fucking blade of grass well enough for Sizhui to recognize it from his dad's guqin jams. 

Wei Wuxian is a better flautist than even Inspector Gadget BeatBoxing Flute Guy (Google it).

Our Many Many Spirit Lure Flags have Lured A Spirit, Oh Shit

Lan Clan has a Plan and Wei Wuxian is a Fan

Having one single lure flag stuck in Wen Ning’s torso caused spirits to basically eat him alive, so to catch one evil spirit, 6 disciples holding flags on the roof plus 8 more flags on the ground seems like a good amount. Wei Wuxian is like “yep, a single one of these will lure every spirit for five miles, carry on, younglings.”

Baxia Does the Heavy Lifting

Wei Wuxian is supposed to kill four people because of this curse situation, and in the course of the series they all die, and he kills exactly zero of them. The curse on Wei Wuxian’s arm should be called the scorekeeper curse. 

Baxia’s spirit pinballs around the Mo clan, rapidly killing three people on Mo Xuanyu’s list plus a couple extras for good measure.  Who's a good blade? Baxia is! Yess you are! Yes you are!

This here is the exact point in the show where your friend, who has listened to you squee about The Untamed for three months and finally agreed to watch it with you, will say “what the fuck am I watching?” and try to get up off the couch. Tackle them! 

This also the point where we all realize that the prosthetic and practical effects in this show were probably not made by the people who made the clothing, because the quality is...variable. The white eyeballs are pretty good, but the glove of death is ridiculous.

Camera operator: why you gotta take it out on me?

While Baxia goes to town on the Mo clan, the Lan Clan babies...watch? And tie up the various victims after they are already goners. 

Narrator: Her son is dead.

Meanwhile, 

Wei Wuxian, you motherfucker. You’ve been alive for like 7 hours and you’re already building a new zombie army. No wonder you don’t want them to call Lan Wangji.

Hanguang-Jun Cut It Up One Time

Lan Wangji shows up and very slowly kicks zombie ass with his guqin. If you are used to Hong Kong action speeds, you will find The Untamed very peaceful.

 All of the baby Lans fan squee up at Lan Wangji like he's the cultivation world's David Bowie and...they're not wrong. Jesus Fuck, he’s charismatic.

Lan Wangji is soft boi when he discovers this murderous sword full of dead-bastard energy, because it reminds him of his true love.

Like the talk about souls, the conversations about the nature of the murderous entity really don’t survive translation into English.

Servant: it’s a ghost! 

WWX: it’s not a ghost, it’s a spirit

Babies: It’s a spirit

LWJ: it’s not a spirit, it’s a [...] ghost

Our Protagonist gets the FOH

Wei Wuxian is soft boi when he sees Lan Wangji, but not so soft that he considers actually, like, sticking around. 

Wei Wuxian is also clueless boi, noting Lan Wangji’s white clothing and thinking, as in the past, that he looks like he’s dressed in mourning. The term he uses is 戴孝, which google tells me means the type of outfit worn by Jiang Yanli after Wen Ning rips her husband’s heart out someone who is in mourning. 

Actually, Wei Wuxian, you dumbass, he is in actual mourning, actually, for you. Dumbass. He probably packed away all of his blue outer robes 16 years ago and only takes them out occasionally to reminisce about that nice date you had on your mountain of corpses. 

On his way out the door Wei Wuxian manages to find a red ribbon for his beautiful hair, so things are looking up. 

Where to go next...hey I know, how about that one haunted mountain with the killer statue, you know, the one that all my executed friends and child came from? That’ll be fun and a great way to put the past behind me!

OKAY bear with me for a hot second, i started out writing the rp verse wangxian wedding, but midway through it turned into........wangxian wedding if the war hadn’t happened in the rp verse, and lwj and wwx weren’t in love yet, so i guess this is an au to the rp verse, but i had to write this TWO WHOLEASS TIMES because i command+w the first time as i was almost done, 没有功劳也有苦劳, so i hope y’all at least like it a little sdklfjdgfdkjhg

Lan Wangji stills his steps the third time he sees Wei Wuxian sway on his feet, limbs loose from the wine that Lan Wangji knows he was stealing sips of all throughout the ceremony. 

They are still a few minutes’ walk away from Lan Wangji’s chambers, and the quickest route back involves several turns through the various pavilions in his manor. It will not do for Wei Wuxian to run into an accident on their wedding night; the Jiangs, Jiang Wanyin in particular, will take offence, and think that Lan Wangji is trying to get rid of his newly-wedded husband. 

He quickens his pace when he notices Wei Wuxian about to walk into a pillar, and scoops him up into his arms instead. 

Wei Wuxian blinks up at him. “Er-dianxia, is that you?” he croaks out. “Am I...drunk?” 

“Mn,” Lan Wangji affirms. He adjusts his hold on Wei Wuxian. “Do not throw up on me,” he tells Wei Wuxian, and then begins walking in the direction of his chambers. 

Lan Wangji’s plan has always been to marry Wei Wuxian, and bring him into Lan Wangji’s household, and still try his best to maintain a separate life from the other man. Neither of them had a choice in this marriage, but Lan Wangji can at least ensure his own comfort post-marriage. Lan Wangji’s manor is large, and he has ordered for Wei Wuxian’s chambers to be set up far away enough from him that he would be able to get away with not running into Wei Wuxian on a daily basis if he times his schedule well enough. 

He would leave Wei Wuxian to do whatever he likes, grant him whatever freedom he seeks; it will be the most he can do for Wei Wuxian. Wei Wuxian will be disappointed, but he will come to terms with it - after all, it’s not like Lan Wangji ever gave him cause to expect that their marriage will be anything more than what it is on papers. 

“Er-dianxia,” Wei Wuxian groans out. “Slow down? My head hurts.”

“Drinking is forbidden in the royal family,” Lan Wangji tells him, but he slows his pace, all the same. It is a cool and breezy night out. Lan Wangji thinks he might’ve played his guqin tonight, out in the garden where the peonies are blooming, if Wei Wuxian had been a little less inebriated, as a gesture of goodwill to the other man. Wei Wuxian had always wanted Lan Wangji to play for him when they were younger. “Tonight is an exception, but you should follow the Lan sect rules when you’re in the company of the royal court, now that you’ve married into the family.”

“And when I’m not in the company of the royal court?” Wei Wuxian asks. 

“Then you may do whatever you wish,” Lan Wangji says simply. He has no wish to impose rules on Wei Wuxian’s life for no reason, bearing in mind that Wei Wuxian, like himself, had little choice in the arrangement that led to their marriage. “Your life is yours to control.”

“You have no expectations of me?” Wei Wuxian asks. “Nothing you wish I would do, or not do, as...your husband?” 

Lan Wangji can feel the weight of Wei Wuxian’s gaze on him, but he keeps his eyes steadily ahead. “Do whatever you wish,” he says again. “Everything remains as it used to be. Nothing has changed for me, save for the fact that we have officially taken our marital bows.” 

Wei Wuxian tenses in his arms. “You’re so cruel to me, er-dianxia,” he whispers, and then doesn’t say anything anymore. 

Wei Wuxian’s words bring a tightness to Lan Wangji’s chest that he cannot explain. He finishes the walk to his chambers silently, with Wei Wuxian held snugly in his arms.

Back in the privacy of his room, he sets Wei Wuxian down on his bed. 

The servants have already brought him the tea that he usually drinks before he retires for the night. He pours a cup of the still-warm tea, and brings it to Wei Wuxian.

“Drink,” he tells Wei Wuxian. 

Wei Wuxian stares up at him. He looks a lot more sober now, and his eyes are-

Sad. 

“Your head will hurt more tomorrow,” Lan Wangji says, bringing the cup of tea closer to Wei Wuxian’s hands. The sadness in Wei Wuxian’s eyes disturbs him. He wishes he knew how to make it go away. “Drink.” 

Wei Wuxian’s fingers close over Lan Wangji’s wrist, and he brings the proffered cup of tea to his lips. “Not a jiaobei jiu, but close enough,” he murmurs, and downs the tea. 

Lan Wangji’s heartbeat quickens inexplicably, but before he is able to make sense of it, Wei Wuxian drops his wrist, and stands from Lan Wangji’s bed.

“I’ll take the floor,” he offers. “I don’t mind, if it’s just for the night.”

Lan Wangji hadn’t even considered this an option, before Wei Wuxian had said it. He had naturally assumed that they would share the bed. It would just be for the night, after all. 

“I will do it,” Lan Wangji tells him. “I sleep lightly, and I will wake if I hear the servants come in.” 

The corner of Wei Wuxian’s lips lift slightly, but that isn’t a smile on Wei Wuxian’s face. Lan Wangji has seen Wei Wuxian smile genuinely before, and he has seen Wei Wuxian force himself to smile before. This is a far cry from either. 

Wei Wuxian is sad. Lan Wangji has somehow managed to make him sad again. 

“Am I truly so terrible that you would rather sleep on the floor, than to consider the possibility of sharing a bed with me?” he murmurs. He takes a step towards Lan Wangji, and then another, until they’re pressed almost chest to chest. “Earlier today… I entertained the thought of being able to kiss you tonight,” he whispers. 

Lan Wangji freezes. He feels his ears warm.

“You’re always beautiful, Lan Zhan,” Wei Wuxian continues. “But even more so today. I wanted to kiss you. I still want to.”

There is little reason to refuse. Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian are lawfully married. Wei Wuxian is his husband. It is not inappropriate for Wei Wuxian to ask for a kiss, or for Lan Wangji to want to agree to it. It will not be wrong for Lan Wangji to want to wrap his arms around Wei Wuxian’s waist, to draw him close, to bite down on the plump of Wei Wuxian’s plush lips. 

The force of his sudden desire startles him, and he drops the teacup in his hand.

The noise of the shattering glass seems to wake Wei Wuxian up. He takes two quick steps back away from Lan Wangji. 

“I overstepped,” he murmurs, eyes downcast. “I apologise, er-dianxia.” 

“Lan Zhan,” Lan Wangji says, after a long pause. Wei Wuxian had used it, just moments ago, and it was...pleasing to hear. It’s a selfish desire, he thinks, to want to hear his name from Wei Wuxian’s lips again. “You may address me familiarly, now that we are married.” 

Wei Wuxian shakes his head. “I’d rather not, er-dianxia. I’m afraid I’ll forget my place,” he says. His voice shakes. “I’ll sleep up on the roof,” he tells Lan Wangji. “I’ll be discrete. No-one will see me up there.”

Lan Wangji doesn’t stop him as he leaves.

The mood of this poem is very WWX to me. we always hear he has a smiling face and see him smile. And he keeps on smiling though EVERYTHING. Even when he’s about to fling himself off a cliff he’s laughing in sorrow and then smiling in relief. 

I hope WWX can drink and be HAPPY on his birthday. I hope that the worries and sorrows of being WWX won’t be able to harm him. I hope LWJ spoils him with kisses and bunnies, with spicy food and good booze, and with music and words that make him protest his heart can’t take it.

re the ask game, i very often think of the new year fic and jc saying “Please, for fuck’s sake, someone take pity on me and kill one of us. I don’t even care if it’s him or me” because it's so hilarious i had to laugh until i cried. and lxc calling wwx stupid and stunning him with it was priceless, their whole conversation was. and how could i not mention the cinderella fic where wwx tells lwj he makes him feel calm and safe and like he can rest, while lwj's heart beats wildly. it melts my heart

Ahhhh, thank you! Jiang Cheng and Lan Xichen are truly just embodying the sibling mood of "no one in the entire world is stupider than my brother" in that fic. (Incidentally, while this did not make it into the fic, Lan Xichen wasn't actually at the Nightless City club when all that shit went down, so he is yelling internally, "Wangji, you didn't think to mention that he was practically passed out drunk at the time?")

And someone making you feel safe is truly A Thing for me, and that's definitely the fic where it shows up most obviously. That's Just Love, you know?
