Toph / The Duke

omg aw okay they do have a very cute mostly offscreen friendship. I don’t have much to say about them because the duke is just mostly just there to be baby, but it’s so cute how he guides toph, gives her his helmet to vomit in, hugs her when they reunite after the war, etc etc. here are some screencaps of their adorable friendship for your viewing pleasure:

as you can see, they are indeed extremely cute. their interactions are very blink and you miss it, but i do think you can extrapolate a lot from how close they appear to be. if nothing else, they really do have a lovely friendship.

Duke is as much of a Robin as Stephanie is and deserves to be included with her and the other official four way more than Carrie does since he's an actual character unlike her

Gwen is not 'the reasonable one' or 'the baby' of the Spiderband,the latter is Miles and none of them are reasonable,including Peni and Margo who ARE members

Katara is canonically an instigator,an anarchist and has worked again and again to prove that she's a girl in her own way instead of what's expected and the narrative has reinforced that she's not ACTUALLY a mom because she's literally a 14 year old

The Hexside Squad are all equals except maybe Gus since he's a bit younger so they most definitely give him special treatment and not Amity and Hunter because Amity canonically wants to be treated like a normal girl instead of a perfect princess and Hunter is the Team Dad so he's the one GIVING special treatment

Momo was raised in traditional japanese femininity and clearly loves most of it except for the misogynistic parts so if she were to branch out to other kinds of femmeness,she'd be pastel punk or kidcore as a way of freeing herself from her parents' and society's essentialism and adultification and never acts like a mom,she's just very sweet and soft and wants to be 16 for once

Book!Annabeth is a bad person and awfully-written character who's only the most popular girl because she's a skinny blonde white one and Leah is an improvement on her in every way and Rick's og writing was a product of his extremely prevelant racialized misogyny and fundemental misunderstanding of healthy gender dynamics

The common fact in all of these is the white feminism

It's always inherently white feministic to include white girls but not boys or even girls of color,act like white girls are 'smarter and more mature' than boys of color,steal the dynamics between poc and white/poc4poc to make it about white girls and to white feminize girls of color-And i do mean girls especially,female children,not adult women

We've way past having our standards so low we let this slide

In your opinion who do you believe the dads of Su and Lin are?

While I enjoy the mystery and hope that they never get revealed in canon, I think the most plausible possibilities are for the Duke to be Kanto, Lin's father and for Suyin's father to be Satoru.

Y'all niggas gotta be kidding me with your posts about how Hazel and Katara and Duke are the 'token goody two shoes' of their groups.Like,are we talking about the same girl who swore at nuns at her school and talks shit to people way older than her on regular basis and the girl who's half of her character motivation is rebellion against corruption and taking direct action to help minorities-read:she's punk-and the guy who got kicked out of multiple schools and lead a whole ass gang when he was like 15?????

I've seen takes about swearing amongst the Gaang, including:

Zuko knows how to swear, but doesn't bc of Iroh

Zuko doesn't know how to swear bc Iroh is scary and the crew valued their lives; Aang swears profusely, inadvertently teaching Zuko some new ones

Zuko knows a lot of swear words from living amongst ex-soldier sailors

Aang is too precious to handle swearing

Toph knows a lot of words bc she was in the Earth Rumble VI

Toph grew up sheltered, so she doesn't know any, but starts using them the moment she learns

Sokka and Katara never learned bc it was seen as a masculine thing, and all the men left, so there wasn't much if any swearing

Now I have my own headcanon: Sokka and Katara know every swear word in the book. Reasons? Kanna.

Kanna, who literally ran away from home and sailed to the farthest thing from it bc she didn't want to get married to someone (props, but also a very big thing, like, why not stop in the Earth Kingdom?).

Kanna, who sent her waterbending feminist granddaughter and her feminine-but-wouldn't-admit-it-yet overprotective grandson to the North Pole - where they would undoubtedly run into her ex.

Kanna probably taught Hakoda every curse and swear she could. She probably invented some. She's old enough to know some that might never have been used during her son or grandchildren's times. She probably traveled around before settling in the South Pole.

Aang teaches a few the siblings didn't already know, but it's not much.

The only reason people never hear them swear is because Sokka said that the Avatar shouldn't swear and then Katara said that wasn't fair, so they all promised not to swear in front of anyone but each other.

When Aang stubs his toe at the Western Air Temple and finally lets loose the stream of profanity he's been holding back since Toph came along, there are mixed reactions.

Toph is obviously peeved they didn't teach her.

Haru and Teo have to inform The Duke about when to use each word, and why he shouldn't tell Pipsqueak where he learned some.

Zuko tries to tell Aang that perhaps he shouldn't swear in front of Sokka and Katara - thinking they'll be uncomfortable - only to be interrupted by the siblings breaking their own promises (if Aang does it, they're all allowed to) as they get into a screaming match over who makes the best stew.

2. Spencer,mallard, and Duke are giving me Zuko, azula, and Iroh vibes, like, Prince Spencer annoyed the main gang alot until he changed his ways and helped others, thanks to the wisdom from his Uncle Duke, and then he beat his sister, Princess Mallard in an agni steam.

Ok - let's give some answers! (Do these count as answers?)

Andrew and Molly probably would date if they were human, or be those friends who you think are dating cause they are that close. They know each other so well that it's like they share a brain (they performed this once at Tidmouth when Molly finished Andrew's sentence for him while he sneezed, and Henry nearly called for a priest).

They do give those vibes! I don't remember if I ever did post this idea I had which was based on the fact that I based Mallard on Azula's character (I think I did...) - but Duke being Iroh is a really good choice, as is Spencer as Zuko! Makes me wonder who the rest of Team Avatar would be (I can see Emily as Katara, Percy as Sokka... maybe Toby as Toph? Beaten up by a little wooden tram!)

Hiya Stitch! What are your thoughts on The Duke/Kanto Fan Theory? Where the theory goes that The Duke is Kanto. Have you heard of it before? I can't remember where I've seen or heard about it?

I'm going to send this question to the rest of the Kantoph Crew.

Hi Ronin! Great question...

I think I'm past the point of no return with Kanto being, essentially, an original character. I love Toph and The Duke's interactions in the show, but I feel like we made Kanto his own person. If I started saying The Duke was actually Kanto, it would probably alter The Duke's characterization, and the little guy deserves more <3 That being said, I'm definitely not opposed to the idea!

There's been a few headcanons about The Duke being Kanto, and I do like the takes. They usually range and talk about him being a bit of a vigilante and Toph just accepting it despite being the head of the RCPD, and when he's finally ready to give up the life he ends up dying or something angsty.

Some say he left Toph because their lives were going in two separate directions, and in general, I'm not a huge fan of Kantoph AUs where they break up. It makes me sad sad sad.

I'm pretty sure The Duke is a nonbender, and I kind of love the idea of Kanto being a metalbender too. But that's a pretty small preference in the grand scheme of things.

I will say...if someone writes a fluffy The Duke as Kanto/Toph fic where they live happily ever after with their little Lin, I'm all on board with that. I will even accept whump. Just no ded Kanto or breakup Kantoph

Bisexy and has a thing for rebels(Aang,Toph and Jet/Kory,Helena and Roy)but weirdos will lie to you about what she likes to prop up their dudes and leave out her girlies

Dick is moon-coded(Her Marvel Amalgam is Moon Knight)

Characters that it would make more sense that Hakoda would adopt than Zuko

Sure, Zuko is abused, badly traumatized, and has an abusive father and missing mother, but there are three things which make it much less likely Hakoda would adopt him:

1. He, at least theoretically, already has a loving, adult caretaker(I could go on and on about the flaws with Iroh’s “parenting,” but it’s not like Zuko doesn’t have anyone).

2. He’s relatively old (unfortunately, teenagers are not exactly considered to be prime candidates for adoption). 16 years old might even count as “adult” by water tribe standards. Yue was “of marrying age” when she turned 16.

3. He’s from an enemy nation(and to be clear, just about no “Hakoda adopts Zuko” fics I’m aware of begin postcanon or even after Zuko joins the Gaang).

4. He has a series of objectives which might involve doing stuff like “raiding the Southern Water Tribe, attacking Hakoda’s village, and threatening and inflicting violence on Hakoda’s family” in his search for the Avatar.

Who would make more sense for Hakoda to adopt?

Aang:

1. Relatively young (12 years old).

2. Suffered the genocide of his entire people and the death of his father figure, and is in desperate need of adult supervision as he deals with a nasty and trying set of responsibilities.

3. Is already very close with Hakoda’s children, to the extent he’s basically their adopted sibling.

4. Is already allied with Hakoda and fighting for a cause he supports.

Toph:

1. Relatively young (12 years of age).

2. Already an ally of Team Avatar, and is extremely close to them.

3. Very much “can’t go back home,” since her parents would imprison her if she did.

4. Could really benefit from adult supervision and support.

The Duke:

1. Orphan.

2. Only eight years old.

3. Not only is an ally of Hakoda but seems to have spent a substantial amount of time with him.

Jet, Smellerbee, Longshot:

1. Orphans with no adults looking out for them.

2. Seem to (at least potentially) be somewhat younger than Zuko.

3. Fighting on the same side of the war as Hakoda is.
