I tried to pull you out But you built this bed to rot Look at this hell you've caused And you'll blame yourself ‘cause It's all your fault

rewatching the first season of supernatural (to remind myself that this show used to be good) and man. sam really did try so hard to get out. he tried so hard to go back to college and leave that family. you'll be watching an episode and it'll be like "who're you texting?" "my friends from stanford, i'm trying to keep in touch with them" and "i'm just taking some time off to deal with jess is all" and every "we need to find the thing that killed mom and jess" is said with such urgency and purpose because it needs to happen now. sam needs it to be done and over with so he can go back to school, coming back to the life was done with purpose and intent to accomplish a single hard set goal as fast as possible so he could move back to stanford and never look back. like, watching the scarecrow episode with meg, seeing sam agree with her notion that at least they're living their own lives and nobody elses, it almost made him ditching her and going back to save dean feel like it came with a sense of... guilt? he's going to listen to john about chasing some random hunt instead of finding azazel because he can't leave dean to follow john's every order all alone. yes, he saves dean, and feels pretty good about his choice to come back in the immediate aftermath, but it feels like a betrayal to himself in the long run, like the edges of that choice were tinged with a wrong feeling deep in your gut. and i feel like that's part of what makes the original kripke era hit so hard, is that, if you stick to the original planned ending, there is no getting out. no matter how hard sam fights to just be normal, things were always going to end with him and dean dying together tied to their inescapable fates. i just. the original kripke run of supernatural was so good and looking at the first five seasons as their own separate entity really. it makes the entire narrative that much more devastating to look at.

I love how Weird and Otherworldly and Obviously Not Human early seasons Cas is
He absolutely set off the uncanny valley alarm bells in everyone's lizard brain.
it made people wary and uncomfortable in his presence, even if they didn't know why. something about him was just Not Right
Meanwhile Dean Disaster Winchester became entirely unaffected by this effect in the shortest amount of time imaginable
Dean was out there giving an actual legit angel a cute nickname almost immediately. He was throwing an arm over his shoulder, having him ride around in his car, prayed to him, joked with him (even when Cas didn't understand the joke), cared about his wellbeing, told him to Never Change.... he liked (loves) him for being himself. weirdness and all
To Dean he was just a weird little angel (affectionate)
But to everyone else it was like watching Dean treat a tiger like a house cat

Anyone else notice that especially in the earlier seasons(1-3 specifically for this post), Sam is usually the one talking to the witnesses/authority figures. Doesn’t matter if Dean started the conversation/interrogation, Sam near always finishes them.
Not only that, but officers and others tend to direct their questions more to Sam than Dean. The question is why? In the early seasons like 1-3, Dean may be shorter, but Sam is still noticeably younger than his brother. Is there something about Sam that people trust him to be more mature or what?
On the opposite note, you will rarely see Sam talking to any kid, his area lying more with the teens and young adults. Dean is always talking to the kids, he values their opinions and wants them to feel safe no matter what. This is probably from raising Sam, but it’s also very him. (One example is Lucas in 1x03 Dead in the Water, another is Michael in 1x18 Something Wicked, and again with Ben in 3x02 The Kids Are All Right)
Now, I’m very much onboard with the “both Winchester brothers are autistic” and “ADHDean”, but my question is still, why would the authorities and older suspects talk to Sam instead of Dean? Is it because Sam is so good at masking? Is it because Dean is starting to let his childish side out more now that John isn’t there? Maybe it’s because due to Dean having been selectively mute, Sam had to speak for the both of them growing up and the habit stuck? Could it be because even though both boys are good looking, Sam is more traditionally handsome while Dean is a pretty face? Is there really an answer?

I love you grainy film. I love you leather jacket. I love you bad lighting. I love you Sam’s bangs. I love you amulet. I love you unconnected motw. I love you Dean’s dumb smirk. I love you graphic tees. I love you religious symbolism. I love you motels. I love you random jewelry. I love you psychic powers. I love you fearing your own nature. I love you flip phones. I love you “us against the world” mentality. I love you—

sam winchester must be four things: - an annoying younger sibling - deranged - kind - trans i do not accept other options.
NOTE: i just wanted to doodle sam, ngl. he used to be my most drawn spn character back in the day. i even named my plant after him! anyways, i just like when he’s pathetic and whiny. he can’t talk to women and he likes being a smartass.
also, trans? yes. in any direction you want. tfm, mtf, enby — love it either and all ways. tfw is literally just three trans losers in a trenchcoat and lots of plaid.

early seasons spn is just so.
foggy cinematography, exorcising not killing demons ("you're supposed to help people but why didn't you help me?"), guilt, researched christian lore, sam's demonic powers (boy king of hell sam winchester is such a missed opportunity), horror road movie style, things actually trying to be scary, the power of angels ("i draggedd you out of hell i can throw you back in"), looking for god while he was there the whole time ("cruel, capricious god"), inventing free will, crowley being actually scary, lucifer being a threat and not some annoyed child, the way plot tied up...
