a helpful guide for people who have just learnt about blackhill and wish to expand their knowledge on their new favorite sapphic ship.
ೃ⁀➷ disclaimer
✧ ideas presented in this thread are considered to be fanons which means, they are headcanons accepted by the blackhill community
✧ they're essential to know since they're the stem of the ship
✧ the existence of fanons does not forbid you from creating your own headcanons
✧ fanons help us to unify the core information since the whole ship is based on our presuppositions
✧ once again, it is rather important to at least get familiar with the core ideas, because fanfiction authors often use them in their works

✧ born on april 4th, 1982
✧ there are two ways of picturing her family background:
⋆ her mother died while giving birth to her which caused her father to display abusive behavior towards maria (canonical information from the comics)
⋆ her family is big and supportive (fanon, might have developped from ‘the perfect girlfriend’ by thetruthaboutlove fanfiction)
✧ she is considered to be either of:
⋆ an american descent - might be canon
⋆ an italian descent - a very important fanon which developed from 'the perfect girlfriend' by thetruthaboutlove fanfiction
⋆ a canadian descent - it refers to cobie smulders' descent
✧ she used to be a marine
✧ most of the fanons are based on the comic maria hill so it is recommended to read at least some of them
✧ most people visualize and portray maria hill as cobie smulders in their works however she can be also pictured as in phil noto's comic artworks
✧ maria hill is considered to be a canonical lesbian. even cobie smulders herself agreed that her character is tired of men (thanks to @blackhillthings on twt for making cobie say this)

✧ natasha can be perceived in many ways, in my opinion, everyone has their own portrayal of her character in their head
✧ in blackhill universe, natasha's character tends to be a mix of a mcu natasha and comic natasha
✧ it is highly recommended for you to read the comics
✧ natasha is usually portrayed as scarlett johansson in fanfictions but it is also very common to picture her as in phil noto's comic artworks
✧ personally, i recommend you to read the 'fearless' by elle1991 fanfiction for natasha's background story

I've been wondering. If someone wanted to get into Black Widow comics, what would you recommend they start with? And are there any stand out issues you'd have on your "must read" list?
OH BOY I LOVE THIS QUESTION.
okay so nat’s origin story varies a lot depending on author. i really like deadly origin, and it’s what i use as basis for my tasha’s relationship with alexei and ivan.
FOR MORE INCREDIBLE BACKSTORY, CHARACTERIZATION AND BUCKYNAT GOODNESS, you HAVE to read the name of the rose (2010), from liu and acuña. SERIOUSLY IT’S AMAZING.
my favorite characterization (as in, personality and all) is edmonson and noto’s run, black widow 2014. she has a cat in it, need ya know more? samne and waid’s run, black widow 2016, is entertaining but not my favorite, and doesn’t have as much growth as the 2014 series. however, it is a fan favorite, so you might enjoy it!
i LOVED black widow 2019, from soska and soska. also awesome for her characterization, and she goes on a murderous rampage for child abusers. you also see her softer side with kids, which is sweet AF.
black widow 2004 features a retired nat that is dragged back into spy stuff. its continuation from 2005 is also super fun.

You just really brought me back, posting about Marvel and Buckynat! I actually just spent 10min googling around who wrote the 2014 Black Widow run and why Clintasha is better only to suddenly be confronted with the memory that Clint is married and has also been character assassinated by the MCU (Kinda impressed with myself though having managed to repress that trauma)
Clint Barton before the Fraction/Aja run does NOT exist. I refuse to acknowledge it 😂
Movie!Barton was a twisted joke - that's not Clint, I refuse to acknowledge him (Ok there are parts that are aces, but still)
The Brubaker comic run of Winter Soldier with Nat and their whole back story was so fucking tragic yet beautiful. I'm still bitter that the movies skipped out on that and their whole story of their time in the Red Room 😭
Let's not forget Bucky Barnes pining like a teenager through the whole ass Edmonson/Noto run of Black Widow (spoiler alert: he's still pining in 2020... Winter Soldier: expert killer and sappy romantic extraordinaire)

my thoughts on black widow!
not in order / organized.
black widow spoilers ahead!!
- i thought the fight scenes were amazing! esp the one between yelena and nat. maybe it was bc i watched it in imax and the sound effects were better, making the scene look and sound better. but either way, seeing the two, who were both trained by red room and are so strong and quick fight each other was 😳
- adding on to the previous point, i absolutely love the yelena and nat duo.
- what made me cry were these things:
- the fireflies at the end
- knowing that this was the last time yelena, melina, and alexei get to see nat
- i legit thought that when yelena went to nat’s grave and we heard someone behind her, it was nat. i thought it was a big reveal being like surprise! nat’s been alive all this time!
- after seeing endgame, I know that nat’s gone. but seeing her solo film made it feel more real (?) i think it’s bc we’re saying goodbye to nat for real this time. and also we’re saying goodbye like from yelena, melina, and alexei’s pov. it’s different from how the avengers grieved her death.
- natasha speaking russian 🥺
- natasha’s laugh when she confronts dreykov? the power she holds??? and when she finally kicks the shit out of him??? hello
- there was one scene where yelena uses her baton to destroy the engine of the jet that dreykov is about to escape on. the cgi (i think) of the scene looked weird… (the dialogue too… it sounded very cliche)
- yes ik basically everyone is saying the movie should have been made sooner. and i absolutely agree. however, after the mistake that they made (of not telling nat’s origin story sooner), i think they did a decent job in trying to do whatever they could to make it better.
- also i don’t read the comics so i shouldn’t be the one to complain (i’ve read summaries of it and read the edmonson/noto series) but the intro did feel off. and ik in the previous point i said marvel did a decent job trying to fix their mistake but then again… i would have wanted them to tell the actual story of her red room days, connection with bucky and all that.
- ok the post credit scene…
- yes ik clint is not “responsible for natasha’s death” but i would be lying if i said i wouldn’t be cheering yelena on in the hawkeye series

I will never understand why people fawn over edmonson’s black widow comic run and noto’s art
#they also take that run and use it as evidence#that Natasha is not fashionable. When she actually is!!!#there are like 20+ years of her being fashionable and even in recent comics#her outfits are not monochrom. by recent I mean comics up to NOTR#after NOTR they decided to draw her like an emo high schooler#she is STILL fashionable as hell!!! I’m kinda pissed that the Black Widow movie is happening, but I can’t get excited about it because I’m still pretty fucking angry with ScarJo for defending Woody Allen and generally being White Woman Privilege and. sigh. Really, the Woody Allen thing pisses me off on multiple levels. So many reasons.
I’m just going to go re-read the Edmonson/Noto run of Black Widow instead...

Been reading some Black Widow lately. I enjoyed the Mark Waid & Chris Samnee run, and I can see why it was recommended to me. It was better than some of the more random issues I was picking up.
Currently making my way through the first volume of the Nathan Edmonson & Phil Noto run. I’m liking that one too, but I felt something was missing from my Natasha reading in general and I had a hard time putting my finger on it. Until today.
Female friendship. I get that Natasha is totally bad at being friends with anyone, and that’s why most of her friends seem to be her exes, but there’s also a lot of opportunities for exceptions to that. Yes, Natasha’s bad at letting people, but what if she spends some panel time with a woman who’s really, really good at it?
After reading some Unstoppable Wasp, I started wondering if Nat and Nadia had any issues in which they teamed up. Heck, are there any occasions in which we see Nat and Jan interact?
On a related note, I’m curious if there’s a storyline involving Natasha successfully rehabilitating someone she saved from the Red Room program. Volume 2 of the Waid run ended with all the young girls going into a customized foster care, but Nat is the reason they abandoned their headmistress. You would think Nat would visit them to try to help the girls adjust to their new life.

hi!! i’m really sorry to bother but i’m not sure who else to ask. do you have any issues or artist recs for scarlet witch and/or black widow? i’m trying to make an edit someone requested but i’m having a bit of a time trying to find good art
noto and edmonson’s black widow had some great art. jae lee draws a good nat, as does rod reis, stephanie hans and alex maleev. and in avengers assemble i rly liked the way matteo buffagni drew her. killer hair
wanda’s most recent solo had some really nice art with like tula loath, vanessa del rey, marguerite sauvage. and my fav artist for her is daniel acuna who drew her pretty consistently in uncanny avengers vol 1 and 2. i personally really like mike mayhew’s wanda and alex maleev’s when he gives her clothes that look like clothes.
