Ellen McLain’s commentary from my trivia playthrough
#She's so cute <3#WPP#Portal#Ellen McLain#If you haven't played through the audio commentary I would Absolutely recommend it it is So fun#I clicked out of curiosity - kind of just expecting like a movie's audio commentary y'know? Like a video that highlighted specific scenes#No it's just the whole game again but with trivia pop-ups! I love that!!#It reminded me so much of like trivia track or the pop up fun facts from special editions of movies I would watch as a kid#But you can play through them!! You have to click on them and they spin! I love that!!!#I always love hearing the design and development process - fascinating how the playtesters reacted to this new game!#We take it for granted now but yeah I imagine it would've been very confusing at the time#And I was like ''Well it was such a small team and Ms. McLain was such a large part of it - surely she'll have a few bubbles?''#She does lol - as soon as I got to her first one (it was a slow burn! They buried the lead with her lol I'm already invested!) I had to go#I saved-quit the game out of sheer excitement and giddiness lol I had to sleep on it before I was ready to come back#It is so cool to hear her natural voice ah <3 And the kinds of direction she was given! Other bubbles also talk about her vocal direction :)#Very cool! I wonder what TTS they used for reference :0#But to hear her real laugh without the audio processing over and and she still sounds like GLaDOS! I mean of course she does but just jfdksl#That's /her/ laugh! They share a laugh! It's a very similar laugh!!#Not to mention her talking about wanting to play and just fdskalfd they clearly did such a good job with her performance and ahhh#It's too cute it's all too cute sharing a room with GLaDOS while her voice actor talks about making a cake to share with her friends stopppp#I am so enamoured <3#I also took a bunch of screenshots of GLaDOS still shit-talking while she was being destroyed lol#Actually beat the ending in one try this time :P I ran out of time the last time pfft#But now I've beaten it twice in as many days :D Although I did start it the first time several days ago - but I beat it again quickly!#Has me all the more itching to replay 2 ♪#WPVG

I just finish it, and I have to say that it wasn't a faithful adaptation. I mean, I understand that a 2 hour movie could never cover a book like RWRB - too many things happen in that novel and it will require a mini series at least to be completely faithfull.
However, it was a nice, super funny, sexy, heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same time, extra cheesy and romantic movie. It was a great romantic comedy and it remind me a lot of that classic romcoms of the 90s that weren't perfect but you deeply enjoy it.
Taylor and Nicholas carried the entire film as it was nothing, they really nailed the characters. And their intimate scenes were so romantic and tender, I have never seen scenes like that for queer characters, it was beautiful.
Don't get me started on Uma and Sarah as Ellen and Zahra, cause they ate those roles.
Anyway, it was a great film and is probably going to become one of my comfort films because it left me feeling so good.

Best Quotes From 'Red, White and Royal Blue'
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
"David," Alex says. "He's a beagle. I remember because, like, who does that? Who names a dog David? He sounds like a tax attorney. Like a dog tax attorney."
"Christ, you're as thick as it gets," he says, and he grabs Alex's face in both hands and kisses him.
“I don’t give a damn what Joanne has to say, Remus John Lupin is gay as the day is long, and I won’t hear a word against it.” (I know this one isn't technically in the latest version of the book, but it was there when I first read it and I miss it.)
"First you've been, like, Draco Malfoy-level obsessed with Henry for years"
"The next slide is titled: EXPLORING YOUR SEXUALITY: HEALTHY, BUT DOES IT HAVE TO BE WITH THE PRINCE OF ENGLAND?"
"Sometimes you just jump and hope it's not a cliff."
"Your hair in the mornings is truly a wonder to behold," is how he breaks the silence.
"I needed a run," he says. "To clear my head a bit, figure out... what's next. Very Mr. Darcy brooding at Pemberley."
Alex sighs. "I don't think I told you, but she, uh. Well, when she fired me, she told me that if I wasn't a thousand percent sure about you, I needed to break things off." Henry nuzzles his nose behind Alex's ear, "A thousand percent?" "Yeah, don't let it go to your head."
"I'm taking a picture of a national gay landmark," Alex tells him. "And also a statue."
"At cruising altitude, he takes the chain off his neck and slides the ring on next to the old house key. They clink together gently as he ticks them both under his shirt, two homes side by side."
"So," she says. "Do you feel forever about him?" And there's no room left to agonize over it, nothing left to do but say the thing he's known all along. "Yeah," he says, "I do."
"He hates himself, but he doesn't regret anything, and maybe that makes him a bad person and a worse politician, but he doesn't regret Henry."
"Wait. Zahra. Oh my God. I just realized. You're... my friend." "No, I'm not." "Zahra, you're my mean friend." "Am not."
"But the thing is, jumping off cliffs is kinda my thing. That's the choice. I love him, with all that, because of all that. On purpose. I love him on purpose."
"I've been gay as a maypole since the day I came out of Mum, Phillip."
"It's a mural of himself and Henry, facing each other, haloed by a bright yellow sun, depicted as Han and Leia. Henry in all white, starlight in his hair. Alex dressed as a scruffy smuggler, a blaster at his hip. A royal and a rebel, arms around each other. He snaps a photo on his phone, and fingers shaking, types out a tweet: Never tell me the odds."
"When the car door opens, it's June, standing there in a bright yellow T-shirt that says: HISTORY, HUH? "You like it?" she says. "There's a guy selling them down the block. I got his card. Gonna put it in my next column for Vogue."
“So, what?” he asks. “You want me to quit politics and go become a princess? That’s not very feminist of you.” “That’s not how feminism works,” she says, rolling her eyes.
"I am the First Son of the United States, and I'm bisexual. History will remember us."
"History, huh? Bet we could make some."

Neil Gaiman's intentionality and possible literary connections with the sign, "DON'T PAY THE GUY IN THE BLUE GLASSES HE DOESN'T WORK HERE" (East Lynne?)
Most people think the sign on Mrs. Sandwich's door is a reference to Crowley, and maybe it is, although he doesn't have BLUE glasses (yet).
Tumblr media
So I woke up thinking about the theory that Mrs Sandwich is actually God, plus all the signs at the bottom of her stairs. The God theory could account for most of them, except for (possibly) the one about blue glasses. Neil has said the inspiration for that sign came from historic signs around Soho, but that doesn't mean there's not another layer of meaning. (If there's one thing he's taught me with season two of Good Omens, it's definitely to dig deeper!)
Good Omens is full of references (direct and indirect) to other stories, so I searched around online and found two interesting books:
The first is Boy in the Big Blue Glasses, by Susanne Gervay and illustrated by Marjorie Crosby-Fairall. It's a contemporary children's book about a kid, Sam, who gets blue glasses and feels like no one recognizes him anymore, except for his best friend. He goes on adventures to rediscover himself, his sense of humor, and his confidence - all while overcoming his fear of not being accepted and working to embody his true self (who he sees as a super hero, among other things).
Ok, there are parallels there with both Aziraphale and Crowley and the quest to be seen, understood, and accepted for who they truly are, but it doesn't feel like a strong connection.
More digging brings me to a Victorian novel called East Lynne, by Ellen Wood. Already, I feel more hopeful - this fits more neatly with other GO book references, like Pride and Prejudice.
In East Lynne, the main character is Isabel, and she is seen as being very emotional/passionate, very emotionally perceptive, and having extremely expressive, distinctive, and beautiful eyes.
She marries Carlyle, who is very kind but not nearly so able to read body language or understand emotions, and is able to "circumvent his emotions" and "separate business from feeling".
Because of his poor emotional perception, Carlyle contributes to a breakup with Isabel. Also contributing? Someone named Levison, who wants to use Isabel and tricks her into thinking the worst of her husband and running away with Levison instead.
Eventually, after a good bit of trauma, Isabel dons a disguise which includes blue glasses (which are seen as the primary part of her disguise, as her eyes are so distinctive) and returns home as a governess to take care of her children.
So … That sounds familiar, hmmm? We've already seen Crowley as a governess, and he DOES have beautiful, distinctive eyes and is more emotional and impulsive than Aziraphale. And we could argue that Aziraphale's willingness to "separate business from feeling" was a strong driving force in their separation at the end of s2. Factor in The Metatron as a possible Levison, complete with lies and manipulations to break them up so he can use Isabel/Aziraphale, and I think there's definitely a connection.
Here's a really long but interesting analysis:
If East Lynne is the right Clue, perhaps this foreshadows Crowley wearing another disguise (complete with blue glasses?) and back in heaven in season 3. East Lynne doesn't end the way we hope Good Omens will, although Isabel does finally tell Carlyle everything, and he forgives her. We can hope Aziraphale and Crowley will likewise find the value of better honesty and transparency with one another!
(Disclaimer: I added East Lynne to my reading list, but I *just* had this idea and wanted to share, so the plot and character summaries are only from reading descriptions and analysis online, not from directly reading the book. Yet.)
I'm adding this Clue to my collection of Clues / meta of metas!

I am in book-seeking despair. This may not be your area of expertise, but do you have any recommendations for a historical (or pseudo historical) novel with court intrigue and, possibly, a smidgen of swashbuckling, great escapes, high stakes, etc.? Sort of the three musketeers but if the court intrigue were at the center of the plot rather than the musketeers' (admittedly great) adventures? I need some backstabbing & equivocating courtiers on the page right now. Any recs appreciated!
Oh no, despair! As it happens, I do indeed have recs. And I suppressed the impish impulse to suggest A Game of Kings (friends don't let friends reread Lymond without emotional support.)
Ellen Kushner, Swordspoint, is historically-inspired fantasy which, if I'm remembering correctly, gets very close to what you're looking for. For my own tastes, it had not enough swashbuckling, too much drawing room drama, but the protagonist is great. And there is so much equivocation! Equivocation is, in fact, a survival skill.
Sherwood Smith's Crown Duel is a book with swords and court intrigue that I loved so much when I was 12 that I have not dared to revisit it since. I do remember that it involved both swords and the language of flowers.
Have you read Sabatini's Bellarion the Fortunate? Maybe not quite enough court intrigue for you, but there are a lot of intrigues. It's just that they sometimes happen in back rooms, and over chess games, and in military tents, and in half-painted cupolas, and around long tables with titled noblemen. Also, the romance between a steely, scheming princess and a nameless ex-scholar who decides 5 minutes after meeting her that he's going to save her life or die trying makes me want to scream. It's amazing this book didn't cause a conscious bi awakening when I was 15, but anyway.
I presume that, from my extended flailing over Prince of Foxes, you have a pretty good idea of whether or not that would be enough court intrigue for you or not.
I don't know if you've read Laurent Binet's Civilizations yet but I am about 2/3 of the way through and loving it, and I think it might fit the bill! There is a lot of discussion of 16th-century European politics, and the more you already know about e.g. Erasmus and More, and the dissolution of the monasteries, and the Schmalkaldic League, and the Edict of Nantes, the funnier and more interesting it is.
There's also a historical (fantasy, I think?) epistolary novel set in Napoleonic Europe and co-authored. It might be called something like... Blood and Ink? Steel and Ink? Noun and Noun. If anyone reading this post can remember what this is and why I think this might be a good recommendation for this, please chime in.

Favorite New Anime Summer 2022: Parallel World Pharmacy
Tumblr media
I absolutely love cozy, slice of life anime, so it's no surprise that the isekai Parallel World Pharmacy would fast become a new favorite.
A young, dedicated man researching a cure for cancer dies one day due to overwork. He wakes up in the body of a 10 year old boy named Pharma in a parallel world similar to 18th century france. He learns that Pharma was the son of one of the world's leading doctors, and that he can control "Divine Arts" which help him diagnose and treat patients. Through perseverance, friendship, luck, and a little bit of magic, Pharma opens a pharmacy in this world in hopes of bringing new medical knowledge and creating a place where commoners and nobles alike receive equal treatment.
The design is gorgeous, with many of the costumes and sets heavily influenced by 18th and 19th century Europe. Each episode covers a new challenge for Pharma as he learns to navigate this new world. What sets this apart from other isekai is that we get to see Pharma adjust to his new world and bring his talents to it, while also getting what is essentially a medical drama.
If you enjoyed Ascendance of a Bookworm or Dr. Ramune Mysterious Disease Specialist, lighthearted and sincere anime or medical shows, I definitely recommend Parallel World Pharmacy!

Song Tag!
I was tagged by the amazing @sadmorgen to list 5 songs I’ve listened to recently. This was difficult for me since I listen to music non-stop. Here are 5, each with a mini blurb. I highly suggest you take a listen!
Stranger - Dimash Qudaibergen Watch/Listen here Qudaibergen is a Kazakh singer and musician. He might objectively be the most skilled vocalist in the world at the moment. Stranger showcases his technique, range, and musicality.
Now We Are Free - Ellen Williams Watch/Listen here Williams is a Welsh soprano singer. This is one of the best renditions of this song, in my opinion. Her classically-trained voice shimmers and soars.
Le pire - GIMS Watch/Listen here, Lyrics (FR & EN) GIMS is a Congolese and French singer and songwriter. Le pire’s insightful message demonstrates his exquisite songwriting abilities.
Autumn Finds Winter - Yiruma Listen here Yiruma is a South Korean pianist and composer. This is a lesser-known piece of his but it’s one of my favorites. The blend of the piano and strings takes your breath away.
Les blues du businessman - Céline Dion version Listen here, Lyrics (FR & EN) Dion is a French Canadian singer. This song’s lyrics are relatable as an aspiring writer/artist. Beyond her powerful belting and intricate melismas, she conveys the message with the right emotions.
I’ll tag @illbeyouranchor @mysticlostdog @blackinkmess @aslice-ofpoetry @smp-writes @wysewordsblog @poppiesandpromises @followcb @instruth @mirrorworld12 and anyone else who wants to share! (note: you just have to list the songs, not write all the extra stuff I did)

I don’t usually recommend books on here (because I haven’t really been reading for fun since I started college) but if you like the Percy Jackson series then you should check out A Thousand Beginnings and Endings.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It is a retelling of Asian myths and legends and it is exactly what I’ve been looking for since I plowed through the Percy Jackson series and it’s various sequels in middle school and high school. It is basically a bunch of short stories each followed by an explanation of the myth that they are based on.
I have tried plenty of books based on Greek myths that people have recommended saying that if I liked the Percy Jackson series I would like those books, but so far they have mostly been disappointing for me largely due to the authors writing voice or weak character work. I am loving a thousand beginnings and endings because the authors of that book do not have that problem. The characters are well written and the myths are incorporated naturally into the stories. Each story is only a few pages long but they draw you in and make you want to see what myth they adapt next. The main things that remind me of the Percy Jackson series in a thousand beginnings and endings are the authors’ writing voices and the respect that they have for the myths and cultures they are writing about. It is truly a fun read and you all should definitely check it out if you haven’t already

Requiem For A Dream (2000)
