I am actually way too tired to make two gifsets today and yesterday I had no mental energy to even talk but today I do.
So I'm gonna talk about my favorite arc, which is Scully's cancer.
I think it's pretty safe to say that most of the fandom agrees that The X-Files did not know how to handle the shows overall mythology, except when it comes to the cancer arc.
What stands out to me about the cancer arc is how well written, planned and executed it was.
It starts during Leonard Betts, which is the shows most watched episode, bringing in an audience of nearly 30 million people on that Superbowl night. This was such a brilliant marketing strategy for the show as well, because it was a way to not only continue riding the high of how popular the show already was, but also bring in (at the time) new viewers by starting such a compelling arc in the middle of what appears to be a monster of the week episode.
To me, the cancer arc is such a fascinating way to delve into Scully and Mulder, as individuals and as a unit. We see how Scully not only puts up with Mulder, but loves him in such a deep and almost mystical way that you couod argue his belief that she will survive this incurable disease is why she does. This is foreshadowed back in One Breath with, "I had the strength of your beliefs."
And as much as she has the strength of his, she prays for him too when he refuses to let her take the fall for him despite being terminally ill.
Cancer is a terrible, terrible thing but Scully having it opened up so many doors for the development of her character and their relationship. Mulder's guilt that she has cancer because of the journey she embarked on with him, and her apologizing for not being able to finish that journey with him shows us how devoted they have become to one another.
I also think this is around the time when David and Gillian switch from still being sort of green as actors (which I love too) to actually doing emmy worthy acting for an extended period of time. There is something so chilling about Scully telling Mulder "the doctor said I was fine." and him replying, "I hope that's the truth." for example.
I know a lot of people believe Scully is immortal, because she didn't die and because of what Clyde Buckman said (among other things) but I have always seen the moment between them where he tells her she doesn't die as him reassuring her that the cancer does not kill her, and unlike a lot of things that happen to Scully during the show her cancer is not completely ignored later in the show, with even Mulder mentioning how he wished her back to health when she was in the hospital during the revival.
There is, of course, more to say but basically: cancer arc you will always be famous.

Let's talk more fashion: who are your top ten fictional characters with the best style 🥰
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Right off the bat I have to go with Carrie Bradshaw. She annoyed me to no end for most of the series (apart from that one episode where she went to a house party and someone stole her shoes and she insisted that the guests pay her back for them) but I'd be lying if I said that her outfits don't continue to be iconic and they are always going to be a huge chapter of costume design and fashion. Patricia Field really is THAT woman.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
2. Rachel Green my forever girl has to be number 2. I love so many things about her style and how it evolves throughout the seasons. In the early days it was jeans, T-Shirts and overalls but in such a chic and 90's way and then as she starts working in fashion and growing more into a more grownup version of herself she has an amazing office wardrobe that I still take inspo from. I also love all her slip dresses.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
3. Meave Maisel. I started watching The Marvelous Mrs Maisel mainly because of the clothes and the fact that it was written by Amy Sherman Palladino and I stayed for as long as I did for the clothes as well. I believe the plot got a bit tired and the creators got distracted by the fact that the budget kept getting bigger so therefore they thought the show should be getting flashier instead of more human and funny but you'll never catch me complaining about the costumes because, well look at them!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
4. Lisa Fremont. LISTEN. The costumes in this movie (which is Rear Window, directed by Alfred Hitchcock) are my Roman Empire. Especially the black and white dress combined with Grace Kelly's incredible beauty makes it one of the most iconic fashion moments in cinema history and we should give Edith Head (the costume designer) her flowers.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
5. Fran Fine. It took me a while to realize what an absolute fashion icon this woman is because I didn't watch The Nanny as a kid or teenager (I still haven't watched all of it and I plan on making it right eventually) but omg the absolute serve after serve after serve AFTER SERVE. Plus, that body is bodying. And a special mention to this particular outfit which is all of my dreams coming true:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
6. Issa from Insecure
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This show's entire costume department deserved all the Emmys, Oscars, Tonys, just everything but Issa's style was always my absolute favorite because it was so versatile and reflected on her character journey as well. Plus I loved the fact that even when she had a casual look on, there were still so many smart details about it. Argh I miss Insecure so much I need Issa Rae back on my screen immediately.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
7. Daisy Jones. This character has had a tight grip on my heart ever since I read the book and I knew I'd love her when I watched the tv adaptation but I didn't expect to love her to the point I spent all of last spring trying to find pieces to recreate her entire cool girl hippy wardrobe. And also I just have to mention this "gold dust woman" moment because it was arguably the most iconic outfit of them all
Tumblr media
8. Holly Golightly
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I don't think I need to say too much about her to be honest do I? Audrey Hepburn is literally a work of art, in this movie and in general. My maybe somewhat unpopular opinion is that the pink outfit is my favorite one :')
Honourable mentions:
Monica Geller/ Blair Waldorf/ Cher Horowitz/ Zoe from Grownish (I hate the show though)/ Devi from Never Have I Ever/ Hilary Banks from The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air

Hello sorry to bother you with this all of sudden ,and this might be coming out of nowhere, and I’m not trying to force you or be pushy but I m trying to get more people into this show with great potential. If your not interested it’s fine but Have you heard of or watched moon girl and devil dinosaur? Season 2 comes out February 2.
The main character i love she gives me autistic vibes I’m autistic. The show has interesting characters, action ,great music, and animation ,good themes and representation, Anime references, it even has an eyecatch season 2 is going to be more story driven if you find that interesting. It also shares the same animation studio as rise of the teenage mutant ninja turtles.
It be good if you watch the first 2 season 2 episode when they air so the ratings will be higher. And watch the other season 2 episodes when they air.
I think Disney might be trying to sabotage the show with them probably dropping 14 episodes on Disney + on February 3. They did similar with season 1 and the ratings where low ,please watch season 2 episodes when they air on. But more importantly also watch it on Disney + on feb 3 and when they air it on YouTube. Unfortunately they are dropping 14 episodes on Disney + so watch them all in one day but also when they air the first time.
I’m not just saying only cable just also. I’m saying please support this show. Despite that it still won 5 Emmys. Also if it’s no trouble could if it alright with you spread the word about this show to others you know like either online or irl. Time is limited!
Tumblr media
...Ok... look... I don't care about a... satanic dinosaur or a space girl and if they give support to that... thing... it just seems normal to me like the Star vs the Forces of Evil series , that's what I see in that, I mean that it doesn't interest me or attract my attention, from here I see it very... normal with random things... WHAT MATTERS TO ME IS THAT THEY SAVE ROTTMNT!!! TO WATCH THE FULL CHAPTERS AND NOT HAVE A DAMN- but it's okay if you like that and support it... I just want the creators and animators of the rottmnt to continue that series... and I want more of them... and my favorite red Godzilla♥️

Booming LGBTQ Representation in Animation in 2021 [Part 1]
Tumblr media
Two of the choices for “Fan Favorite Couple” in Autostraddle’s Annual Gay Emmys in September 2021 were in animated series. Both choices are highlighted here by yellow boxes.
In December 2020, I wrote that there is “hope in the future for diverse storylines and expanded representation,” adding that there is “a lot to look forward to in 2021 in terms of animated series…[which] will undoubtedly affect the ongoing war between streaming platforms for more subscribers, profits for themselves, and film distribution itself.” That still rings true, and 2021 has even more representation that I had imagined in December 2020, with continuing series like The Owl House, Disenchantment, Helluva Boss, Star Trek: Lower Decks, the third (and final) season of Final Space, and many others. The representation in 2021 is part of the “whirlwind” of LGBTQ representation which creator Noelle Stevenson described in November 2021.
Reprinted from Pop Culture Maniacs, my History Hermann WordPress blog on Jan. 15, 2023, and Wayback Machine. This was the seventh article I wrote for Pop Culture Maniacs. This post was originally published on January 5, 2022.
When Autostraddle, a digital lesbian culture publication, posted about their annual awards show, the Annual Gay Emmys, in September 2021, the influence of LGBTQ representation in animation was evident. [1] While most of the nominees for the categories were live-action series, there was an entire category dedicated to such series, “Outstanding Animated Series.” Harley Quinn, Blues Clues & You!, the “Obsidian” episode of Adventure Time: Distant Lands, The Owl House, “The Politics Episode” of One Day at a Time, and Magical Girl Friendship Squad were nominees. [2] The Harley Quinn episode “Something Borrowed,” was one of the nominees for the “Best Episode with LGBTQ+ Themes” category, and two couples in animated series were nominated for the “Fan Favorite Couple” question. When the results were announced Harley Quinn won for Outstanding Animated Series, although it was unfortunately the only animated series to win in a category. Of the series nominated, Magical Girl Friendship Squad and One Day at a Time ended in 2020, [3] Distant Lands ended in 2021, while three others are ongoing (Harley Quinn, Blue Clues & You!, and The Owl House).
Keeping this in mind, reviewer Jade King, in a review of The Owl House, said “we shouldn’t look toward giant corporations for continual queer representation.” While that still rings true, many of the shows with LGBTQ representation are produced and broadcast by such companies. For instance, of the over 20 Western animations noted in this article, almost all of them are produced by the subsidiaries of companies like Disney, WarnerMedia, NBCUniversal, ViacomCBS, and Sony, which bring in more than $1 billion a year. [4] The same is the case with many of the Japanese anime series noted in this post, which tend to have more LGBTQ representation, generally, than Western animation, although the instances of representation between Western and Japanese animation is slowly reaching the same level, and Japanese anime often plays into “many problematic aspects” and stereotypes in one way or another. King also pointed out that queer representation is not a competition, but should be a collaboration, rather than putting down one show while elevating another, arguing that “queer representation isn’t a linear path to acceptance. It’s messy and inconsistent.”
In 2021, shows on streaming platforms lead the way when it came to representation. Netflix tops the list in this regard, with shows like Disenchantment, Carmen Sandiego (to a lesser extent), and City of Ghosts. With Disenchantment, the show was described as “queer through and through,” with what some would call queer vibes throughout, had its third part air on Netflix in January of 2021. Recurring characters Odval (voiced by Maurice LaMarche) and Sorcerio (voiced by Billy West) were shown to be a gay couple, while there was an implied gay couple between Big Jo (voiced by LaMarche), and his assistant, Porky. Furthermore, Princess Bean, called a “rebellious, alcoholic, adventurous princess” by one reviewer, the show’s protagonist, voiced by Abbi Jacobson, was shown to be bisexual or pansexual. This is illustrated through her kissing the elf, Elfo (voiced by Nat Faxon), trying to have sex with various men, seeming to have feelings for Lady Bowmore (voiced by Tress MacNeille), female explorer, and falling in love with a mermaid named Mora (voiced by Meredith Hagner). This is further supported by the fact that Jacobsen is bisexual herself, making the representation that much more genuine. As for Carmen Sandiego, it was more implied than anything else. In February, in Instagram Live interview, Duane Capizzi, the showrunner of Carmen Sandiego, said that it was intentional that Le Chevre (also known as Jean Paul) and El Topo (also known as Antonio) were together, and confirmed them at a couple, calling them villains which are “sweet,” but you “can’t help but love.” [5]
Tumblr media
Carmen Sandiego and Julia Argent in the Carmen Sandiego: To Steal or Not to Steal animated film
Some fans also speculated that protagonist Carmen Sandiego had feelings for Julia “Jules” Argent, called “Carulia” by fans, but that has not been confirmed by Capizzi or anyone on the show’s staff. Similarly, for City of Ghosts, the LGBTQ representation was subtle rather than outward like in Disenchantment. In the case of that series, Thomas, one of the show’s protagonists, a specialist of the Ghost Club and voiced by transgender child actor Blue Chapman, was non-binary, confirmed as such by show creator Elizabeth Ito. One episode of the series also showed a character with two mothers. The series, more broadly, was praised for its simple animation and characters, but having “strikingly complex” stories and background art which reflects the “realities of one of America’s richest cultural melting pots,” Los Angeles.
Disenchantment, Carmen Sandiego, and City of Ghosts were not the only Netflix shows with LGBTQ characters. The kids-oriented Ridley Jones also included such characters. The preschool animated series included a non-binary bison named Fred voiced by Iris Menas, and two characters (Aten and Kosi) voiced by Andrew Rannells and Chris Colfer, two openly gay actors. The series was created by Chris Nee, who created series like We The People and Doc McStuffins, both of which featured LGBTQ characters. Nee described herself as gay and “relatively butch” in an interview in 2021. Jacobson, who had voiced Bean in Disenchantment, voiced Katie, the protagonist of the animated film, The Mitchells vs. the Machines. In the film, she wears a pin with a rainbow flag and later is noted as having a girlfriend named Jade at film school, with the representation relatively subtle. More outward, in terms of the representation, were Chicago Party Aunt, which included a a gay man named Daniel, and Q-Force, which featured an assortment of LGBTQ characters. The latter series, which had caused great controversy and consternation online due to its use of stereotypes, features a gay protagonist named Steve Maryweather (voiced by Sean Hayes), a gay man named Benji (voiced by Gabe Liedman), a lesbian woman named Deb (voiced by Wanda Sykes), and a gay drag queen named Twink (voiced by Matt Rogers). A late-comer to this article was Arcane, the first part which aired from November 6 to November 20. Show writer Amanda Overton confirmed that Caitlyn Kiramman was a lesbian, saying that there is no word for gay or stigmatization against it in Piltover, meaning that Caitlyn could “marry any gender or race suitor,” but such a person would become “a part of her house.” Overton also said that the relationship between Caitlyn and Vi is “naturally developing,” with the trauma that Vi’s parents were killed by Enforcers, with Vi also confirmed as a lesbian as well. On Twitter, Overton said that everyone on the show’s crew is “working together to tell the same story.”
On November 25, 2021, the final season of F Is For Family, aired on Netflix. It included Louis, the gay brother of Sue, a character voiced by Neil Patrick Harris, an openly gay actor. It also included Ginny Throater, who divorces her husband, Greg Throater, and is bisexual, while Greg is gay, and divorces her as a result. Additionally, Eileen, Frank’s sister, is lesbian and becomes Ginny’s lover. The second and final season of the Netflix series, Centaurworld, premiered on December 7. It featured three gay characters: Zulius, Ched, and Splendib. Zulius, who was hinted to be gay in the show’s first season was confirmed as such in the second season, while Ched was revealed to be gay. Furthermore, Zulius is voiced by Parvesh Cheena, an openly gay actor.
Other than shows on Netflix, there were multiple series on other streaming platforms included LGBTQ characters. For instance, Volume 8 of RWBY, running from November 2020 to March 2021, which streamed on the Rooster Teeth website, featured a trans woman named May Marigold, who is voiced by a trans woman, Kdin Jenzen, a bisexual catlike woman named Blake Belladonna (voiced by Arryn Zech), and various lesbian characters. The latter included Ilia Amitola (voiced by Cherami Leigh) and a couple (Saphron and Terra Cotta-Arc) who have a child named Adrian. At the same time, the first season of Invincible, which aired on Amazon Prime from March to April 2021, included a gay recurring character named William Francis Clockwell, voiced by openly gay actor Andrew Rennells.
HBO Max, also owned by Warner Media like Rooster Teeth, featured a gay couple, Jonny Quest and Hadji Sing, in Jellystone!, while Young Justice, which focuses on young superheroes from DC comics, has a rash of such characters. Specifically, Kaldur’ahm/Aqualad (voiced by Khary Payton) is polysexual, while Marie Logan (voiced by Danica McKellar) is bisexual or lesbian, Eduardo “Ed” Dorado Jr. (voiced by Freddy Rodriguez) is gay, Violet Harper (voiced by Zehra Fazal) is genderqueer, Wyynde (voiced by Robbie Daymond) is gay, and Harper Row (voiced by Fazal) is bisexual. The second half of the fourth season of Young Justice premiered in late October of 2021 and aired until December 30, 2021. While Kaldur reappeared in the newest season and with speaking lines, characters such as Ed, Bart, Violet, and Harper either had no lines, were only pictured, or only their voices were heard. At the same time, Logan died in Season 2, Wynnde has not made an appearance. These are unfortunate developments.
The HBO Max preschool series, Little Ellen, featured same-sex couples, with a second part of season one released in October, while Summer Camp Island, which also airs on HBO Max, includes a non-binary couple (Alien King and Puddle) and two presumably gay ghosts. It was also implied in various episodes that Timothy Brice Campbell in the HBO Max series Close Enough was either gay or bisexual. The second and presumably final season of gen:LOCK premiered on HBO Max and it featured a genderfluid character named Val(entina) Romanyszyn. Her character was not only groundbreaking as a genderfluid character by smashing apart tropes attributed to such characters, but is voiced by a non-binary pansexual voice actor named Asia Kate Dillon. Val confirmed that she was pansexual in the same season and Robert Sinclair was shown to be gay, with a boyfriend named Chris.

this michaelrika kaibanks just ruined everything for me. especially considering banks is my favorite character and i only continued with the series so i could get crumbs of her(which didn happen thanks to pd always favouring rika and thrusting her into situations where she is not needed). honestly, that bonus scene does not sound like banks AT ALL. her worrying about how her how "family" doesnt love her enough after 10 damn years made me want to break something especially since pd made it out like they all adore and love Rika while making banks feel like she was not part of the inner circle. moreover if emory would have become good friends with any one in that weird-ass grp it would have been with banks but NO pd has to make it all about rika..in a bonus scene... about Banks. idk why no one is talking abt that. and this is so against the found family theme pd set up in the books.
kai kai kai what do i even say abt this guy. past kai was such a gem. like i will fight anyone who says otherwise. him and banks were SO DAMN CUTE but the present one.. not so much. in the bonus scene banks asks rika did she go around walking knowing that she could have had kai again and again if banks didnt come into the picture. i think kai WOULD HAVE had rika again if he hadnt found banks and i cant just ignore it no matter how much i try. also why is kai ALWAYS going "rika this rika that" even after he found banks. ik everything and every character in the dn universe is about rika coz pd created them but it is just disturbing kai is like this even though he knows that makes banks uncomfortable.
i was so excited when pd said she was gonna write a bonus scene for dn but MY GOD I WISH I DIDNT READ WHATEVER THE HELL THAT WAS IN HER FACEBOOK. and to think this might be the last kai banks scene we ever get... makes me wanna cry. they deserve so much more. there might be more bonus scenes in that universe but it sure as hell wont be abt kaibanks knowing pd (i mean she did them dirty in their own book making the main focus damon and rika)
ohhh i almost forget about the conclave scene where kai knows about rikas situation before michael. i mean wtf is this even. and when banks get upset rika had the audacity to feel betrayed. after everything kai said to banks in hideaway abt how she is the one he looks for every morning, this scene in conclave just ruined that closure. AND we didnt get to see kai and banks talk about it. of course we didnt because they are just side characters in this series right.
in my opinion, pd should rewrite the bonus and quit making Kai so 'rika-centric' and actually concentrate on how HIS OWN wife feels.
ik this is a lot kai banks but this is years of pent-up frustration over how my best girl and kai were done dirty.
and i feel like i would have liked rika so much more if pd didnt shove her down our throats like that throughout the series
pt 2 of the ask:
by the same person who wrote the kai banks rant will you ever write a fanfic on kai banks coz i have searched the internet and i couldn't find one story abt them. which is really sad since they are the only other couple who made sense apart from will and emmy. and abt my previous rant kai ONLY belongs with banks and we all know it. i mean they belong with each other no one can say otherwise. kai might have been attracted to rika but he will choose banks no matter what so that is why it is frustrating when he is made out to be like he cares abt rika as more than just a friend and more than he should.  what is your thoughts on all this
Honestly, I think you hit the nail on the head why this doesn’t sit right with a lot of us.
One, the time period. I could possibly buy this if it were set within the original series. Maybe before NF or very soon after. But ten years later makes Banks seem very insecure and childish. She’s just been living for ten years thinking that her husband is secretly lusting over what is perceivable her best friend. Or at least her closest female friendship. That doesn’t feel like Banks to me. My understanding of Banks character is that she would have addressed any issue much sooner.
And two, this was supposed to be about Banks. But what we have is Banks making Rika feel better. First, confronting her over the young girl and reminding Rika that she has nothing to feel shamed over. Then, realizing how Rika feels, confirming those feelings. And in a way, Banks realizing that her feelings around Rika were not insecurities but were in fact attraction, is about Banks. But it’s still really about how amazing Rika is, and everyone agrees.
No one is immune to Rika Fane is the point of the scene. But it's the same message we've been getting since Corrupt.
It’s frustrating because it doesn’t give found/chosen family vibes. It’s all about Rika.
And now I feel like this about her:
Tumblr media
kai kai kai what do i even say abt this guy. past kai was such a gem. like i will fight anyone who says otherwise.
Okay, okay. I’ll keep my fighting words to myself...
Tumblr media
But anyway, Kai alone frustrates me (which is super disappointing because from other’s POVs, he’s delightful and interesting). Banks makes him better. I love the two of them together. The fact that he’s given any room for Banks to develop feelings of doubt about him and Rika is so odd. There’s no argument for it.
the conclave scene where kai knows about rikas situation before michael. i mean wtf is this even. and when banks get upset rika had the audacity to feel betrayed.
See, Rika confiding in Kai didn’t bother me, because it made sense to me that she’d confide in him. At this point, Kai is one of her closest friends and I (maybe erroneously) thought of Kai as the most reasonable and comforting of the group, which is something Rika needed. It’s the jealousy and the doubt about their relationship that comes after that ruined it for me. Either Rika and Kai can be friends and nothing else, or they can’t. And PD is really pushing this “they can’t” idea with every update and bonus they post. Which is so weird.
Do you think we could challenge PD to write a couple-centric scene where none of the other couples show up, if only for us to get quality couple content?
ik this is a lot kai banks but this is years of pent-up frustration over how  my best girl and kai were done dirty.
Hey, I get it. I’m here for some kaibanks conversation. As much as Kai in the series frustrates me, Kaibanks in my head sit in the same boat as Willemmy, which is that they are cute and deserve better.
And didn’t feel like didn’t would have liked rika so much more if pd didn’t shove her down our throats like that throughout the series
Very true.
will you ever write a fanfic on kai banks coz i have searched the internet and i couldn't find one story abt them. which is really sad since they are the only other couple who made sense apart from will and emmy.
It's not that I don’t want to, but I haven’t been able to wrap my head around Kai and Banks as characters. This scene helped with Banks a little, but now Kai is harder to understand. I know there were some oneshots over on Wattpad if you have access. If I were to ever break from Willemmy, Kaibanks would probably be the next one I'm inclinded towards, though. Sorry I can’t promise anything.
kai ONLY belongs with banks and we all know it. i mean they belong with each other no one can say otherwise. kai might have been attracted to rika but he will choose banks no matter what so that is why it is frustrating when he is made out to be like he cares abt rika as more than just a friend and more than he should.
I completely agree. I think with the way the family is set up, there would be nothing wrong with Kai thinking Rika or any of the other girls are attractive, but it should be clear that he doesn’t have the same bond/connection/relationship to them as he does with Banks. I still think back to Michael openly declaring that Rika was everything to him, and it’s strange that none of the other guys have similar moments where they remove any doubt that they want no one else.
Like, I don’t think Michael wants Banks. Or Winter. Or Em. He wants Rika and Rika’s happiness. He might think Banks is hot, but that’s probably as far as it goes.
That’s Banks. Kai’s wife, Damon’s sister. Pain in his neck.
If somebody gave Kai an ounce of that energy towards Rika, we’d have a completely different vibe.
I'm not sure what can be done to protect our sanity. I, for one, usually hate to ignore canon, but sometimes it's just... not worth acknowledging in favor of your own HC.
That might be the case here.
Let me know your kaibanks HC if you're up for it. Anyway, have a great day. Hope you forget all about the bonus scene soon!

Regarding the argument that the “movie star” is a dying concept in today’s film scene, based on what I’ve read so far, I feel that people are approaching this topic with a black-or-white perspective. I do agree that for entertainment in general today, the stars have become less important when compared to the characters and the franchises themselves. And this goes beyond superhero fiction, all entertainment fields are facing this phenomenon. For example, Jessie Buckley, who starred in the A24 horror film “Men”, despite being the star of the game “The Devil in Me”, was overshadowed by the fact that people were more interested by the franchise itself (The Dark Pictures Anthology).
It’s sorta like the “death of the auteur director” argument, except now it’s the actors facing their metaphorical death. Audiences are now viewing actors with a more critical eye since, because adaptations and continuations have become way more common, they’re viewing actors as more like the representatives of the character they’re playing. They’re only there to portray the character and get them right, not so much to be the center of attention.
That’s essentially what Quentin Tarantino was arguing, and honestly, it’s not a completely negative argument. This just tells me that people want their favorite characters to be portrayed well and “correct”, regardless of who the performer is. And sometimes, this could be a good thing as certain actors who don’t have A-list credentials can suddenly skyrocket to fame if they do a good job performing a certain character (example: Tom Holland when he got cast as Spider-Man).
Now, going back to my main point, even though I agree that the entertainment scene has changed, I don’t necessarily agree that the expectations have changed as well. Like I wrote earlier, audiences still expect a good performance. Tom Holland’s career would be dead in the water if he fucked up his portrayal of Spider-Man. What I’m trying to get at is that even if the “star” concept is dead, the actor is still important but that they can’t just skate by on their name recognition anymore. And I don’t think that’s a completely negative thing! Just to list some examples of what I mean by this:
1) Oscar Isaac received tons of critical acclaim in his portrayal of Marc Spector/Steven Grant. Even though people were watching for Moon Knight, Oscar Isaac himself still received just as much attention from the viewers because of how great his acting was.
2) For a more recent example, Jenna Ortega is getting a lot of praise for her portrayal of Wednesday Addams.
3) The entire cast of “House of the Dragon” received massive praise. In fact, I saw that Paddy Considine was getting a lot of Emmy buzz, which I wholeheartedly agree with.
4) John Cena (yes, I’m using Cena as an example) got a ton of praise for his role as Peacemaker. And honestly, I think people are starting to take him more seriously as an actor because of this role.
So, yeah, hopefully my argument here makes sense to y’all. Personally, I don’t like the way people are framing this shift in entertainment as the “death of the star”. It comes off as saying that actors have become less important when I honestly feel that it’s more the case that priorities have shifted. Actors are still important, but the portrayal of the character comes first. And even then, a really great performance will still get attention and acclaim from audiences.
Okay, that’s my TED talk, hope y’all enjoyed it.

Paso Doble - Evenly Matched - Strictly NRC Dancing
Author Notes: This one was interesting to write simply because I don't have very much experience with this character. That said, I based this fic off of the only paso doble performance I've ever truly enjoyed. So the dance in this fic heavily inspired by Derek Hough and Hayley Erbet’s the Emmy winning paso doble to "Uccen" by The Taalbi Brothers on Dancing with the Stars. I edited this fic while listening "Higher" by Michael Buble so that might have bled into the writing too. Just like the rest of this AU/series the reader is female for this fic. I hope you enjoy!
If you would like to read more this AU/series, the fics can be found here: Strictly NRC Dancing AU Master-List.
Type: Dance AU/fluff/you can take it as romantic of platonic/female reader
Word count: 874
Tumblr media
The paso doble was, as I now understood it, an incredibly theatrical and dramatic dance. It was largely meant to tell a story, though the exact contents of the story itself depended solely on the two dancers.
As such, it was the perfect match for the over-the-top huntsman known as Rook. I had little to no concerns about having him as my partner since I knew he would strive to do his best as he appreciated all forms of ‘beaute.’
Even then, though, nothing could have prepared me for the raw level of prowess he displayed on the dance floor. Choreography practice had been beyond startling even though I’d thought I’d been braced.
Rook was an amazing and powerful dancer. I had no doubts that his performance would be one of, if not the best, of the day. Especially after Crewel had grinned at us and declared that we could leave the staging of the performance to him.
And yet, as I got ready to head out and wait for Rook to join me on the red-lit floor, I paused. Glancing back at him curiously, a thought hit me, “I’m surprised you opted to learn the paso doble… I figured you would choose a dance that was less aggressive and more elegant.”
He smiled at me, green eyes narrowing slightly as if he were amused by my words, “But isn't this also a graceful dance?”
I frowned at him, but he didn’t give me a chance to respond as he quickly continued, explaining his words, “You, for instance, move as gracefully as any fleet-footed deer running through the woods, enchanting all who see it. Your sweeping yet delicate motions are enough to remind one of a bird. Entrancing to all who witness your dance.”
I stared at him, unsure of how to respond to this profuse amount of what seemed to be praise spilling from his lips. At last a rather unintentionally blunt response came out, “It’s still aggressive, though.”
He laughed quietly, but nodded, “It is. This dance is incredibly aggressive, and that too is beautiful. For what is more beautiful than the struggle to survive? The determination of two equally matched people as they are both in a contest but also working as a unit. Who will come out on top? Who will lose? Who will people remember?”
His eyes were glittering now in a way that reminded me of the fact that one of his favorite hobbies was, indeed, pursuing dangerous prey.
Rook was a kind and surprisingly gentle man who was also incredibly intense when it came to his passions and interests. It was something that made him both admirable and rather worrying at times.
But I didn’t get time to say anything more since it was time for me to head out, soon to be joined by my rather odd partner. But one thing I could say about our conversation was that it had me going into the performance with a completely new view of the paso doble.
The determination of two equally matched people…..
I felt a smile creep onto my face as I began to match Rook’s steps as soon as he joined me. Perhaps this was what a paso doble could be. Less of a fight to the death and more of an evenly matched spar between two people who could both respect one another.
The two of us matched each other's steps perfectly, even as the dance itself seemed to fly by. Even Rook's brief solo flamenco performance took hardly any time. And I was dancing with the hunter yet again, with him tossing me around his body and through the air as if I weighed just as little as a matador’s cape did.
It wasn’t until I was thrown backwards, only being held up by my outstretched arms that were being gripped by the fully upright Rook who looked down at me with glittering eyes, that I realized how heavily I was breathing.
The final beat of the song hit and a spotlight flashed over us, scattering the red lighting that had surrounded us and signaling the end of the dance. But that didn’t mean the room went silent. Instead, we were met with thunderous applause that had me letting out a slightly breathless laugh.
Rook’s chest was heaving just as much as mine was as he tugged me back upright with an ease befitting the strength as a young man who did archery for fun. I came to a stop just short of our noses touching, a grin on my face that matched the wide smile he wore as his gaze met mine, “Merci, mon Trickster.”
I was still breathing heavily as I shook my head, still grinning at him, “No, thank you Rook.”
It seemed that I still had a lot to learn when it came to dancing since Rook’s philosophy certainly had opened my eyes. And perhaps that was why we had just performed the best paso doble of the evening.
And that wasn’t just my ego speaking. I could say that simply as someone who’d danced several paso dobles now. But I could also say that based on the perfect scores that we had received in regards to our performance.

º ✧ 。 shaye don't be lazy, write up all the verses you have !
NO, i think i'd rather pull my hair out by the roots and stuff myself into a meat grinder 🥰 but i WILL give you a brief summary of each, just so you all know your options when deciding to interact with mj ! some of these are SHIP LOCKED - aka she is always in those relationships with that specific version of the character when i write in those verses. but the others are wide open for shipping if that's your thing :)
Tumblr media
insomniac verse - mj's MAIN/DEFAULT verse !
threads based before, during, and after the events of marvel's spider-man (and soon to be the sequel!). mj is an associate editor at the daily bugle, focused on the "city beat" aka crime and politics. she is dating peter, unless otherwise specified ahead of time, and lives in a one bedroom apartment in greenwich. she was childhood best friends with harry osborn and serves as a sort of big sister to miles as he steps into his own as a spider-man
tasm verse - ship locked with @labwebs !
this verse draws heavy inspiration from insomniac but there are some key differences/details - in this verse mj was one of gwen's BEST friends, though they ran in such different social circles that she never met peter while they were dating. this mj is also much more comfortable with the concept of the multiverse because of her boyfriend and has traveled to different universes herself.
actress verse -
fresh out of ESU, a once in a lifetime audition brokered by her favorite professor skyrocketed mj into fame. she landed the role of kinsley james, a young lawyer with a temper as fiery as her hair, on hbo's latest juggernaut eros (think scandal written by the succession writers). nominated for an emmy for supporting actress after the first season, mj's star continued to rise after it was announced that she would be playing the lead role of rebecca in the long past dawn book series movie adaptations. she splits her time between new york and LA, depending on where she's currently filming.
ITSV verse -
mj is the wife and partner of peter b, not to mention the mother to his perfect child, mayday. she has taken a break from her acting career to focus on their daughter, and occasionally volunteers at the F.E.A.S.T. center in the free time she gets when Peter takes their daughter places he shouldn't.
noir verse - ship locked with @surpriseattack !
ohhhh wow look ANOTHER reporter!mj. yes, yes it is and you'll LIKE it. mj works side by side with noir on his various cases as his partner, even if the title is unofficial. she had dreams of becoming a model or an actress when she was in school, and frankly still does if you ask her. but when the depression hit and she saw the DEVASTATION around her, the injustices flattening entire neighborhoods while fat cats only grew uptown, she turned her gift with words into a more impactful career.
college era verse -
mj is in her junior or senior year studying journalism at either ESU or GCU (for those who know lol rip). she's heavily involved with both the student newspaper and also the theater department, starring in several shows a year. a known party girl, mj never says no to a night out and rarely ever comes home alone.
top gun verse - ship locked with @brdshwed !
this is the only verse that i actually DID write up; you can find the details here

The 20th Anniversary of The Phantom of the Opera (2004)
The Phantom of the Opera (2004) has been — and continues to be — one of my favorite childhood movies. It was so influential in my life, in fact, that my entire family experienced a collective phase where we loved and learned the songs and rewatched it regularly. If you can believe it, I was only seven years old when I saw this movie for the first time, and I still hum songs like Angel of Music to myself. Unfortunately, I did not have the privilege of seeing the stage show before its permanent closure, and the film is the only adaptation we have to immortalize it.
Tumblr media
Pros:
* Purists do not give this film enough credit that it is a faithful adaptation of the stage show. How easily this version could have been ruined by filmmakers who didn’t care about the source material
* Despite purists constantly complaining about Gerard Butler and Emmy Rossum’s performances, Rossum is still a beautiful singer whose fragile and vulnerable vocals work better in a cinematic context than opera singers like Sierra Boggess’s would have. Likewise, Butler’s portrayal of the phantom is decent. He brings a menacing, intimidating presence to the character — particularly when he is shown through silhouettes or no dialogue
* The music, of course, is wonderful and iconic
* The movie adaptation was my first introduction to a non-Disney musical. It made a huge impact on my childhood and I continue to love the film and its soundtrack to this day
* Some of the sets and costumes are extravagant and pleasing to the eye
* Movie adaptations of musicals generally incentivize audiences to appreciate theater by watching “stage shows” in a different medium. I definitely would not have watched The Phantom of the Opera in its original format
* As other critics have pointed out, the movie fixes the logical problems from the original version
* The actors who play Andre and Firmin share adorable chemistry and are a great comedic duo with fun interactions throughout the movie
Cons:
* This movie has one single big problem: the filmmaking is not especially strong. (Disclaimer: I am mostly referencing other critics with this statement and am not qualified to speak on the matter). The reveal of Phantom-related narrative beats are much less potent because of underwhelming makeup and camerawork; the tone and aesthetic are a bit confused and fail to commit to either a dreamlike setting or gritty realism; the staging in many scenes is often far too crowded by flowers, candles, etc.; and the cinematography tends to wash out the film
Verdict: A more effective adaptation from stage to screen would certainly have benefited the film version of The Phantom of the Opera. Thankfully, the technical ineptitudes of the 2004 iteration do not bother me much. I can’t deny the nostalgic appreciation I have for this movie and I will forever love it for introducing me to a musical I loved as a child and still love as an adult. I still recommend seeing the stage version (if you can anymore), but the film is not a horrible way to learn of the most successful musical of all time.
As an aside, now that it has been two decades since the premiere of this film, I can’t help but wonder what a better, updated retelling of this story would look like. Perhaps we’ll find the answers to such a query sooner than we think…

Miscellaneous reactions to the last five episodes of s3 of The Sopranos
Dr. Melfi is objectively the best character and I adore her and I'm so so so sad that she's going to have a smaller role in the second half of the show. But I saw on Wikipedia that she still appears in a majority of the episodes, so that's comforting, I guess.
EDIT: One thing that is not about the last five episodes but I forgot to say it elsewhere: Edie Falco was nominated for an Emmy for "Second Opinion," and Lorraine Bracco was nominated for "Employee of the Month." Falco won, and obviously she's a fantastic actress, but I would have given the award to Bracco.
I'm seriously impressed with how mature Christopher has been lately: not snitching on Paulie at the end of Pine Barrens, voluntarily apologizing to Tony in Army of One, etc. I'm sure he will continue on this trajectory and will eventually be so wise and mature that he'll see the error of his ways and get a legitimate job and live a respectable life (⬅️⬅️⬅️ that's me lying to myself)
Until I saw the FBI's bulletin board in the finale, I had totally forgotten that Paulie and Silvio have different job titles. I still don't know the difference between a capo and a consigliere.
I have some thoughts about similarities between Tony and Paulie that emerge in Pine Barrens, but I kinda want to make a separate post about that. Here's a preview: in different ways, in that episodes, they both try to have their cake and eat it too, and that ties into the overarching themes of blame and responsibility.
Speaking of character parallels (one of my favorite topics): I had already been thinking of Carmela and Melfi as parallels, in that they're both women close to Tony who are deeply conflicted about their loyalty to him and their arguable complicity in his bad deeds. These episodes further that parallel: in The Telltale Moozadell, they each receive a gift from Tony—a ring for Carmela, extra money for Melfi—that they're conflicted about. In Amour Fou, they both reject that gift: Melfi tells Tony she's not charging him this month since he overpaid last month, and Carmela stops wearing the ring. Neither one can bring herself to abandon Tony, but they can at least draw some lines.
I didn't find Jackie very interesting when he was with Meadow but I did find his interactions with Christopher interesting, all the more so because of his similarities to early Christopher. I wonder if Christopher is self-aware enough to notice those similarities? I'm not sure.
Speaking of self-awareness: at the end of Pine Barrens, when Melfi asks Tony if the qualities of his mistresses ("depressive personality, unstable, impossible to please") remind him of any other woman, he thinks for a second and then shakes his head. I totally thought he was lying, that he knew what she was getting at but didn't want to admit it. But I guess I overestimated him, because in Amour Fou, when he's fighting with Gloria, he's suddenly like "ohhhhh you're just like my mother!"
I don't get what Meadow's deal was in Army of One. I mean, some of her behavior is just grief and anger, but what I really don't get is why she argues with Jackie's sister for doubting the official story about his death, a story we know Meadow doesn't believe either. And why did she seem to take pleasure in doing it? I just don't get where that cruelty was coming from.
This is a very half-baked thought but here goes: it stood out to me that in Army of One, Tony tells Melfi that he doesn't want his kids following in his footsteps, that he wants a better life for them; then, when Carmela fears that military school will turn AJ into a "professional killer," Tony counters that the students are "soldiers," implying that that's a good thing to be. But last season, he had described himself as a soldier as a way of excusing his sins. Something something something I'm not sure where I'm going with this train of thought but I think there's something here about Tony wanting his son to break the cycle but maybe having a very shallow understanding of what that would actually entail?
EDIT AGAIN: Oh and similarly, in Army of One Tony rebukes AJ for crying—just like he did to himself in the pilot!

Alex Yee's interview Nominated Labor of Love
Full interview: https://www.awardsdaily.com/2022/08/18/arcane-co-creator-alex-yee-on-his-emmy-nominated-labor-of-love/ Highlighting more of Caitlyn and Vi's relationship for this blog to put in my pinned post
Awards Daily: Continuing on that theme, the relationships between the characters on the show is what moves everything forward. Silco and Jinx was one of my personal favorites, and also Vi and Jinx, and then later Caitlyn and Jinx. It sounds like there wasn’t as much of that in the game, so how did you go about crafting it?
Alex Yee: This was definitely something that took a little bit of learning on our parts, because in the games the type of relationships that would form are closest allies and most hated enemies. Vi and Caitlyn in the game are partners, an odd couple cop duo. And Jinx when she was released had this completely enigmatic background; all you knew was that she had it in for Vi. What was good about having that as a setup for going into the show was that there were so many questions that the players wanted to have answered.

Awards Daily: This is more of a fan question. One of my favorite scenes was when Vi has Sevika pinned asking, where is Silco holding Powder, and the genuine confusion on Sevika’s face saying she is not a captive, she works for him. Then, literally as she is stabbing Vi, saying she is practically his daughter. Anything you can tell me about creating that scene ?
Alex Yee: So much of that was really loaded because we are finally getting Vi back into the story. We had this deliberate decision in episode four to hide her so you would be asking the question, Where is Vi? What is up with her? So episode five was her reemergence into Zaun and discovering everything. That scene was for a really long time the culmination of finally realizing what has become this world of hers. We wanted it to just hit as hard as it could for Vi, especially since we were crafting the story without knowing where we were going to end. It just felt so unthinkable that the same guy that Vi has spent years and years punching the wall just imagining, if I could just get one more shot at this guy, and hoping my sister is alive and I can find her, just dreaming of that reunion. And to have that gut punch or, as it became, the gut stab of realizing somehow she is on his side and replaces Vander, who Vi loves more than anyone. and has had to basically be knocked unconscious immediately after grappling with losing him. That scene for us felt like this is the moment where everything lands for her. Beyond that, I enjoyed so many parts of that episode. After that fight is the first moment of trust between Vi and Caitlyn. Like okay, I tried to run away, but you still came and helped. I am still going to pick you up and we are talking frankly to each other. It felt like, okay now, we are running and the story is moving. In terms of the fight, there are more memories about how the fight developed because that was the first time with Fortiche that we crafted a fight with dialogue that was like a fight amongst real fighters. We had the kids fight before; I suppose we had Vander fight, but that felt so much like the hero stop at the end of episode three. This was the raw all-out, both of them giving them everything they had. Vi realizing the power of shimmer and what it has become. Watching Fortiche and all the choices that they made, the different camera angles–that was a point of discovery for us in what we could give them, and what they could give back to us, and how they could level up a fight emotionally.
Awards Daily: So, you are a first time animator and writer, and you basically swept the Annie Awards, and you have two Emmy nominations. What is your secret?
Alex Yee (laughing)-I wish I knew, you know. It’s really hard to say because I do not know the industry well enough to tell you what we are doing differently. This was a show that really meant a lot to us. We were writing it for ourselves in a lot of ways. I think one of the things is especially when I look at video game adaptations as a fan, because of course I grew up with all this. What you could feel so many times was that this was an adult who doesn’t play the game trying to figure out what is going to appeal to me as a kid who plays the game that they do not understand. One of the reasons we are starting to see more successful and authentic video game adaptations is that we kids have grown up and for us there is not this younger audience that we need to translate to. We are talking about the characters and the things that we love. I think another feather in our cap for having worked on the game, not only was I there for the inception of the characters and how players received them, but I also saw how players embraced and reformed the characters themselves.
One of the things that I discovered working on League is that you do not 100% own the characters once you release them, you share them with the audience. The way the audience interprets them becomes a lot of their identity. Like the way the relationship between Vi and Caitlyn in my mind really was more something the fans craved and built more of. When we were making the show I thought, this is what they are and how we should build them. So I don’t know. I think we just tried to be as true as we could to the show that we wanted and not write down to an audience. Other than that, the animation quality of Fortichie and the artistic style across every discipline are absolutely brilliant. I also feel we really had something to prove and a real mission with the show, and I think for a lot of people they wanted to be part of something with that kind of ambition. And when they saw people giving it all in that way no one wants to be the lagging leg. Everyone was, like, we have to step it up. It is just so nice to be in one of those environments with a lot of creatives just jamming together.
