“You know how you let yourself think that everything will be all right if you can only get to a certain place or do a certain thing. But when you get there you find it's not that simple.”- Richard Adams, Watership Down
»Fernweh«, a german word that literally translates as “farsickness.” Put another way, it's the concept of feeling homesick for a place you've never been or could never go.
uhh since you liked my last poem about therianthropy and its basicall all i write about... here u go
The human and that animal,
arent so separate.
A broken amalgam of a person gone wrong,
a smudge of mother nature's thumb,
she muzzles me so she doesn't hear
the howling grief for a life I never had.
The mongrel is less of an extension of
myself and more like a part,
a limb, a gnashing tooth, a narrowed eye.
I think they see it sometimes, but they don't
see it the way I feel it.
I feel it in waxing moons,
in loose tees and biking gloves.
I feel it in the unchecked grass of my yard,
second place to a home I am farsick for.
I feel it in waning moons,
In missing a pack I never had,
I feel it in loving my people,
and biting back at the hand that stole
from our hungry mouths.
It's tiring to pull away from your last anchor,
so I just lean into that inner animal.
it rests its head on my shoulder,
watches protectively over
the remnant of someone I will never be again.
A child. A pup. I used to think that little kid was dead.
I sigh and shut my eyes.
I can't leave, I can't run away.
I'd be taking them with me.
When they have done nothing but remind me gently
why I should stay.
fernweh: farsickness, feeling homesick for a place you've never been
"Is something chasing us?"
"No."
"Are we looking for something?"
"Only freedom."
"Then why are we running?" asked Jeonghan, out of breath.
"Why not?" you giggled in response, continuing to prance through the field. Jeonghan caught up to you and grabbed your hand to run together, just for him to trip on a rock and fall, taking you with him. Y'all tumbled down a hill, arms wrapped around each other, until you came to a stop at the bottom.
"Sorry," Jeonghan said sheepishly, a rare look of shame on his face.
"It's alright," you made sure to reassure him, finding the ordeal quite funny. "Are you still wondering why we're out here?"
"I'm wondering why we're running out here at dusk when we have a cozy apartment waiting for us." He said, correcting you.
"Exactly! That's the point, Hannie, we're stuck in a box all the time and I'm tired! Aren't you tired? Humans used to be nomads, and some still are! We can't just stay boxed up our whole lives pretending everything is okay when there's a whole world out there to see." You sat up. "Someday, I'm gonna find the place I've always needed, the place I wish to go back to so bad despite having never been. Have you ever had that feeling? A homesickness for a home you've never known. It's kinda funny, but mostly sad. But we'll make it there, right Hannie? We'll get out of our box and find a home that's just right for both of us."
Jeonghan studied your face, noticing how your eyes lit up in longing when talking about the home you needed so bad. You've told him about it before, and he has to admit that it seems ideal, more so than staying in a city his whole life. Not that he dislikes Seoul, but he agreed, the world needed to be seen.
"All right then, love. Let's go."
"Go where?" you asked, looking up confused.
"Home. Let's go home."
And to home y'all went, no matter how long it may take to find it.
a/n: hopefully y'all can find your home and quench your fernweh if you have it :) i definitely have this feeling often and writing abt it is a nice form of escapism and letting out what i wish i could do (love my parents and my life, i just haven't found myself yet)

The Russian word тоска (toska) can be roughly translated to mean sadness or mournfulness. But these English words don't interpret its full meaning.
There are many shades of тоска (toska). At its lower levels it represents ennui, a vague restlessness, or a dull ache of the soul.
More acutely it can describe a strong yearning with nothing to yearn for. In particular cases, it may be the desire for somebody or something specific, a sick pining.
At its deepest it refers to a sensation of great spiritual anguish, often without specific cause.
I’m over come with a home sickness for somewhere I’ve never been. For foreign sunsets and roads I’ve never driven on. My heart aches to travel to some unknown place and just breathe it in.
A home sickness for road trips and sight seeing. Farsickness.
