in the good spn that lives in my head Dean started wearing a bobby-pin hidden in his hair when he had it long at 22 and then continued to try and hide it in the longer section of his hair when John made him cut it short again. Dean uses it regularly to get out of cuffs but it only comes up in like S9 when Sam is like ���why do you have a bobby-pin in your hair???” And Dean is like “your hair looks like THAT and you still don’t manage to carry anything useful in it???????”

This is ofc used as queer coding and Dean makes jokes about it being gay to wear bobby pins but ok when he does it cause it’s smart (it is in fact gay when he does it but it’s because he’s gay anyway)

something about john winchester mischaracterisation just needles me inexplicably. i can deal with it if a fic is good otherwise but cmon. you have to Get Him. he loves the boys and he ruins their lives like come on….. if you don’t get that he loves them then how r u even getting dean’s character considering that dean is The Same in this manner. love can be bad love doesn’t change abuse it just complicates it etc etc.

unrelatedly but also relatedly, i don’t think he’d be actually homophobic because i don’t think he has time to care. i do however think dean would be absolutely convinced he is incredibly homophobic for unknown reasons. john probably makes like an offhanded comment about something being gay once and 15 year old dean (very attracted to men. genuinely no idea whatsoever. still feels intense rush of panic at the word) decides it must mean john desperately and intensely HATES gay people and proceeds to become world’s best baby homophobe for like a year before he starts to think Maybe Sammy’s gay (sam likes to read books) and cools down on the homophobia. also his heart was never really in it. but he still thinks john is homophobic and has also decided sam’s probably gay (sam is more attracted to women than dean is) so he worries about this a lot.

then one day john says extremely casually about sam Sometimes I wonder if he’s not a little queer, you know, and dean’s heart stops and he’s like What no of course not what and john’s like If it means he doesn’t get into as much trouble with girls as you seem to, I honestly don’t mind and dean’s just like. What. but by this point it’s far too late and all fragments of homosexuality have been far buried beneath the surface by his subconscious. Also it’s important that john WOULD be kind of annoyed by dean being gay. he already thinks sam is weird and has decided to love him anyway (although i’m not sure sam got the memo about being loved anyway so the effort was useless) so it’s ok if sam is gay (privilege of being the family freak!) but dean is meant to be mini him. #picking up girls. see that journal entry. he’d get over it though.

TWO!!!!) dean asks sam why someone assumed they're both gay and sam says, without missing a beat, "well you're pretty butch, so they think you're just compensating for something" and dean just. stares into the middle distance looking disappointed and conflicted?? like he doesn't laugh it off or gets mad at sam for saying that, like he usually does when sam makes fun of him. instead he just kinda stares off and has the same expression on his face that he always does when he's hiding something. season two bro. castiel wasn't even a glimmer in eric kripke's eye and they were still making allusions to dean's sexuality and masculinity being more complicated than what meets the eye. i'm just astounded by straight people's ability to make things gay without even realising it bc what the hell else am i supposed to think of that scene except that dean is queer. i feel like i'm going insane

Dean looked across the front seat at Dad, who had a mean looking purple bruise on his jaw, butterfly bandages holding together the skin over his right eyebrow. “Was it a witch?” Dean asked. A satisfying confusion twisted Dad’s expression. “Where’d you get that idea?” he asked. “I saw the newspaper clippings you were looking at before you left,” Dean explained, trying not to sound like he was bragging. “The way that lady’s bones all broke without anyone touching her. It was a spell, right? That means witches.” Dad hummed. “It could have meant demons, too,” he said, then a smile crawled onto his lips. “But, yes, it was a witch this time.” Dean grinned, so proud he could crow. “I knew it,” he whispered. “Did you kill her?” Sam asked from the backseat. Dad winced at the question. Feeling defensive, Dean knelt up on the seat and looked over the back to glare at Sam. “Of course he killed her,” he said. “That’s what you gotta do when a witch is murdering people with spells.” Sam rolled his eyes. “Are you gonna kill witches when you start hunting?” he challenged. “Yeah!” Dean declared. He turned and dropped back onto the seat. “Of course I am.” He looked over at Dad and grinned. “I’ll kill a witch any day.”
