If you bullet journals, make lots of lists, love to debate, never wear bright colors, drink coffee 24/7, only listen to vinyl, like vintage watches and Oxford shoes, collect buttons, study the classics, thrift all of your clothes and books, enjoy studying in cafes, play the piano, are obsessed with Greek mythology, Penny Dreadful (2014-2016), use only black pens, procrastinate, read only LGBTQIA+ literature, spend free time in/around castles, enjoy calligraphy, hang around museums, like The Picture of Dorian Gray, appreciate shadowy classic Greek and Gothic architecture, and literary tragedy, existentialism, heartbreak, oppression, substance abuse, depression, and death, then have we got a treat for you. That's right, purveyors of all things dark-to-beige in the palette: it's #dark academia.

there's a phrase in 'the virgin suicides' by jeffrey eugenides: 'the imprisonment of being a girl'

my mind keeps wandering back to this line while reading 'rebecca'. i see the imprisonment of girlhood in the fact that our protagonist is an unnamed woman; unidentifiable and forgotten. she is nobody. she is every woman. i see it in the way women are made to compete and compare - one's self-worth is dependent on how much your smile resembles hers, on whether you act, dress, and laugh like her. in the insecurities and constant second-guessing and the way that women feel so ardently and are made to feel unreasonable for feeling. when surely the issue does not lie in a woman feeling, rather the problem lies in a man's rejection of every emotion that isn't rage

the imprisonment of girlhood is feeling like you're decaying, and being told to decay quietly, prettily, without a sound

reading this novel with a 21st-century perspective is interesting. with the knowledge we have on domestic abuse and grooming, this novel is ominous and unsettling. i've noticed this book is frequently pitched as a gothic romance, which is interesting to me since du maurier herself described this story as 'a sinister tale about a woman who marries a widower... psychological and rather macabre'. she feared it was 'too gloomy' and 'too grim' to appeal to mass audiences

reading this book as a romance simply doesn't work, it's not something to romanticise. rather, it's a rumination on female agency at the hands of a man who thinks he owns the world. at least, that's my interpretation
