The Krasnaya ploshchad! Kinda wish they'd had the time to explain the meaning behind the name.

It means "red square". This is not because the building's bricks are red, but because in Russian the words "red" and "beautiful" come from the same root, and this is considered the most beautiful square in Russia.

The Krasnaya ploshchad was actually featured in the 2001 game Treasures of knowledge, along with this very explanation!

Perpetually in a love-hate relationship with Gerwig films

#like her little women is so good and beautiful and it has so much heart and I truly do enjoy it the most out of the adaptations I've seen #but then we get into the Problems #and I can't stand the Friedrich erasure #like he's there and we get the umbrella scene and whatnot but then she paints over it with the scene at the publisher's office #like did it happen? did it not?... #which is Not The Point!! #like magpie was saying in her barbie post the answer is love actually! #and yeah Jo still has her family but it doesn't hit as well when they tell us that the happy ending 'isn't girl gets boy but girl gets book #great for Jo that she has her book! that's incredible! but what you need is human connection! #and canonically she not only stays close to her family but she finds a husband who is her equal partner and whom she's madly in love with #which would round out her attic monologue so well #she doesn't want to be cornered into society's role for a woman as just a wife and mother #but she's lonely!! she wants connection!! the ending brings her full circle because she finds love AND an additional purpose outside of it #but then making it open ended or like she didn't find the connection she wanted cheapens the whole thing #elly's posts #little women 2019

Okay Little Women is one of those "childhood books you read and reread and love" for me. And hot take, Amy has always been one of my favorites and she gets a bad rap. And hotter take, even though Florence Pugh was way too old to play a convincing 12 year old, I really think the 2019 version was absolutely right not to cast a child (aka the 90s version of the film and Kirsten Dunst) in the role.

Because like. The novel spans a decade or so, counting both parts. And when it starts, Amy, while the youngest of the sisters… is 12. Jo is 15. Meg, the eldest, is 16. (Beth is 13.) Amy is the youngest, but not drastically. In the 90s version, Kirstin Dunst did a good job and all, but she's a child surrounded by adult actors. This makes Amy in turn seem even younger, and especially since Amy spends much of the second half of the book a) away from the rest of her family and b) marrying Laurie, having her be a literal child for half the film is… weird. Right? She's only 3 years younger than Jo. And yeah, there is a huge difference between a preteen and an older teen… but when you cast, as in the 94 version, an 11 year old and a 23 year old to play sisters three years apart, and, as the "childhood" part of the story only spans about a year of time before jumping 3 years to Meg's wedding (and then hanging out in Concord for another few years before Amy and Jo take off to pursue their careers/Art, which movies universally skip because they're pretty boring chapters of Meg Being A Newlywed and Look How Great Amy Is)… my point is, it's actually kind of nuts to insist that Amy and Amy alone gets a "child" actor and an "adult" actor, since she's supposed to be basically the same age as her siblings (only a year younger than Beth, who doesn't get a child actor!), and for most of the novel she's in her late teens anyway. The 2019 adaption did it right, fight me.

#little women #i cut out about three paragraphs of digression #about how older amy also makes sense because it does help set up and convince you that she's a viable match for laurie #instead of a random child who is suddenly a decade older #and on reflection it is lowkey pretty funny how much of the second half of the novel is clearly #louisa may alcott being petty as hell and going NO AMY IS SO GREAT LOOK HOW PERFECT SHE IS SUCK IT #OH SHE DOESN'T ONLY GET THE GUY #SHE IS SOOOOO PERFECT #which frankly -- because we know she did it all out of spite -- is fantastic #and despite how heavy handed it is the book really does do quite a lot of work to set up and sell the amyxlaurie marriage #which movies tend to cut out in favor of focusing on trying to make joxlaurie happen #(another reason i really like the 2019 version because it clearly cares a lot about selling amyxlaurie) #ANYWAY

Finally finished the book I’ve been trudging through for over a year!!!

#I do not dnf books especially since I was like over halfway through it #I had seen this book while working at the store in 2019 and thought it sounded interesting #got it for Christmas that year didn’t have time to get around to until last summer #I have a basic understanding of how music works and whatnot but this was just so dense and boring #the book could’ve been 100-200 (maybe even more) pages shorter if the interlude things weren’t included #I just felt like he rambled on so so much and like clearly the editors got tired because there are a handful of errors throughout out it #I think my favorite error is referring to ‘You Belong With Me’ as ‘You Belong To Me’ in the glossary #like he also mentioned Pandora a lot because he helped create stuff for it and it was like we get you think pandora is great #anyway going to do a poll to help me decide what to read next!

#tag talk #an hour into space odyssey and it finally gets good cause they introduce Hal #ten minutes after the person I was watching with gave up and went to bed. #Kubrick please this first hour was fucking boring as hell #I heard so much about how the cut between the apes to modern times is so good but genuinely I paused it and rewound five times while laughin #like... this? this is the scene transition I've heard people fan over? #anyway. I muted the movie audio and put Nyan cat and ancient aliens and stayin alive over different scenes and it was great #gonna hang on to the rest of the movie because Hal just murdered someone so maybe it's good enough to watch with someone #ngl this is why I sometimes prefer watching movies alone. I can watch a bad movie with no fear of what my companion thinks #I don't have to hold room for “oh no what if they're not enjoying it? what if they wish we were watching something else” #it always comes down to that damn social anxiety doesn't it #like. I'm not interested in watching cats 2019 really. though I've gotten part way through it with various people #but I genuinely think I could watch the whole thing if I were alone. I don't care enough to. but I think I could #because watching the cats movie with someone sparks that secondhand embarrassment and cringe #anyway go watch that contrapoints video on cringe and shame and social behavior policing it's pretty good #all this to say. 2001 a space odyssey is very very boring #like. it's slow but not in the way Jaws is slow. that one actually succeeds with the anticipation and suspense. space odyssey doesn't #maybe it's partly because I've read the book? (Arthur C Clarke sci-fi is mid that's my hot take) but I don't feel like that's it #there's just no suspense where there obviously is supposed to be. the grand symphonic music in the background feels paper thin veneer #it's a grandiose front to a hollow scene. #also the flight stewardesses supposed to be walking in zero g with velcro shoes are doing such a bad job of it. #literally the first scene we see the shoes they zoom in and we explicitly see her rebalance catch her weight #CATCH HER WEIGHT - IN ZERO GRAVITY????? #anyway. I'm mad about that

I’m going to assume you spend a lot of money on records and concert tickets 😂

I don't go to nearly as many concerts as people might think and I would like to unfortunately, so the concert tickets part is not true... :( Between working almost 60 hour work weeks now. having no energy outside of work lately and living in the middle of Nowhere, PA (so I would have to drive a bit for shows) it IS one of those things I have to, like, plan out ahead of time.

Records though? I am ashamed to admit that is very, very true though LMAO. It's so wild to admit that I literally only had maybe, like, 30 records max at this time last year and now I'm at almost 150... Not a huge collection yet, but it's crazy to see that number jump up like that to me. Record collecting is so addictive, but it's... not cheap. I have spent more money then I would like to say on records in the past year for sure...

I'm not a fan of the dark academia movement because of elitism and snobbery etc etc but experiencing a short-lived interest in the aesthetic back in like 2018 played a big part in me increasing the number of books I read exponentially

Sources for Somerton's Plagiarism from Hbomberguy's Video (as much as I could get)

I went back through Harry's video, focused entirely on the sources James Somerton pulled from in the hopes of creating as much of a comprehensive list as I could--though my Google-Fu is not very strong. I did however find something I thought was forever lost and that made me very happy--specifically the magazine Midlands Zone containing the column by Steven Spinks that Harry poignantly used as an illustration of gay erasure... while Somerton uses it to sound like HE is waxing remorseful about the very subject.

This is not a complete list, I'm sure. For one thing, I was only able to attempt to pull sources that Harry himself mentioned in the video. Surely there's so very much more out there. I expect there to be a great deal more internet archeology to unearth just how much writing and culture Somerton has stolen like he's the British Museum of Natural History but for gay people.

Kickstarting a book to end enshittification, because Amazon will not carry it

My next book is The Internet Con: How to Seize the Means of Computation: it’s a Big Tech disassembly manual that explains how to disenshittify the web and bring back the old good internet. The hardcover comes from Verso on Sept 5, but the audiobook comes from me — because Amazon refuses to sell my audio:

Amazon owns Audible, the monopoly audiobook platform that controls >90% of the audio market. They require mandatory DRM for every book sold, locking those books forever to Amazon’s monopoly platform. If you break up with Amazon, you have to throw away your entire audiobook library.

That’s a hell of a lot of leverage to hand to any company, let alone a rapacious monopoly that ran a program targeting small publishers called “Project Gazelle,” where execs were ordered to attack indie publishers “the way a cheetah would pursue a sickly gazelle”:

I won’t sell my work with DRM, because DRM is key to the enshittification of the internet. Enshittification is why the old, good internet died and became “five giant websites filled with screenshots of the other four” (h/t Tom Eastman). When a tech company can lock in its users and suppliers, it can drain value from both sides, using DRM and other lock-in gimmicks to keep their business even as they grow ever more miserable on the platform.

Here is how platforms die: first, they are good to their users; then they abuse their users to make things better for their business customers; finally, they abuse those business customers to claw back all the value for themselves. Then, they die:

The Internet Con isn’t just an analysis of where enshittification comes from: it’s a detailed, shovel-ready policy prescription for halting enshittification, throwing it into reverse and bringing back the old, good internet.

How do we do that? With interoperability: the ability to plug new technology into those crapulent, decaying platform. Interop lets you choose which parts of the service you want and block the parts you don’t (think of how an adblocker lets you take the take-it-or-leave “offer” from a website and reply with “How about nah?”):

With interop, you can leave a social media service, but keep talking to the people who stay. Every tech giant used interop to grow, and then every tech giant promptly turned around and attacked interoperators. Every pirate wants to be an admiral. When Big Tech did it, that was progress; when you do it back to Big Tech, that’s piracy. The tech giants used their monopoly power to make interop without permission illegal, creating a kind of “felony contempt of business model” (h/t Jay Freeman).

As with my previous Kickstarters, backers can get their audiobooks delivered with an app (from libro.fm) or as a folder of MP3s. That helps people who struggle with “sideloading,” a process that Apple and Google have made progressively harder, even as they force audiobook and ebook sellers to hand over a 30% app tax on every dollar they make:
