The güiro is a percussion instrument played in Latin music. The güiro comes in many shapes such as a frog, cricket, crocodile, cat, shaker, rattle, rasp etc. But all güiro are an instrument made out of naturalistic materials, with a serrated surface that produces sound when scraped with a stick. The güiro originates from either Africa or South America, slaves from Africa brought the instrument to the Caribbean. From there the güiro became extremely popular in Latin American music.
