The Handmaid’s Tale: A Human Rights Violation Coming to A Town Near You by KC

In Margaret Atwood’s book “The Handmaid's Tale” there were a lot of human rights violations. Can you imagine a life that was so unfair? A life where those in control separated children from parents, brutally torturing/hanging people if they don’t obey. Where people are forced to wear certain clothing to identify their role & are forced to hide their sexuality due to other people’s beliefs? Things like this have been happening to innocent people all over the world for years. In this commentary, I will be comparing and contrasting things that happen in the novel to real life events that are happening in the world.

There are many things that happen in this world that resemble “The Handmaid’s Tale.” One of the things that it’s based on is how females were treated poorly due to men and their power. One example of a human rights violation that happened in the book and also in real life is when the women in the “The Handmaid's Tale” are denied an education. The handmaids are forced to wear a certain clothing due to their position. This relates to how women are treated in Afghanistan. In Afghanistan, there were this group of men called ‘’Taliban” that took over Afghanistan. Since they took over, women are forced to wear “burqas” and if not .. men would do horrible things to them such as call them names like “sl*ts and wh*res.” They also would get beaten or even killed or sent to jail if they disobeyed the Taliban who prevent girls from getting their education.

What also happened in “The Handmaid's Tale” is that if you were gay you would have have been punished for it or killed just for being yourself. Many countries ban “gay” people including Russia. In Russia, LGBT youth face formidable barriers to enjoying their fundamental rights to dignity, health education, information and association.

If you think about it, there are many things happening around the world that could be straight out of “The Handmaid’s Tale.” What comes to your mind?
