Food and Drink Slang in the Navy
The quality of naval food and drink depended on the pusser (purser), the jam bosun ( victualling officer ashore) and the custard bosun ( chief cook). the wardroom steward (the soup jockey) would serve it and a hungry man could eat a horse between two hammocks.
As you can see the Old Salts or Jack Tars were very creative in their descriptions and creating of slangs and that included also food and drinks. Here are a few of their creations and what is behind them.
Boulepongues - a drink that killed many a sailor. It consisted of arrack, sugar, lemon juice and muscadine.
Flip - a pirate cocktail made from beer, sugar and brandy that was heated and drunk hot.
Gnats'piss - anything that had little flavour because it was too diluted.
Hanky - Panky - a mixture of brandy or whisky with ginger wine.
Nelson's Blood - rum
Kill- Devil - freshly distilled rum. Has blinded many a pirate.
Rumfustian - a hot drink that was very popular with privateers. Made from raw eggs, sugar, sherry, beer and gin.
Syllabub- also a pirate drink. Milk or cream mixed with wine, cider or something with alcohol and sugar.
Burgoo- oatmeal mixed with butter, sugar and salt. An alternative was oatmeal with hardtack and molasses.
Doughboys- were hard dumplings made of flour and seawater.
Crackerjack- minced meat with hardtack or hardtack mot molasses.
Boiled eggs.
Cannonballs- candied apples baked in the oven, a special dish for Midshipmen on special days.
Bathing beauty - blancmange, because it shivers and has beautiful curves.
Cheese' ush- an onion cheesecake
Floaters in the snow- sausage with mashed potatoes.
Dog’s body-  pea-pudding
Spotted Dog- pudding with sultanas
Fartleberries - baked beans
Pot mess- a stew with vegetables and some meat
Schooner on the rocks- a piece of meat with potatoes
Mousetrap- cheddar cheese
Salamagundy- salted fish with onions, meat, eggs and anchovies. The deluxe version included meat, turtle, shellfish, spices, garlic, wine, palm hearts, grapes, olives and boiled eggs.

An early Mabon post
Tumblr media
Hey everybody ! :) mabon may be a teensy bit away still but the days are passing fast and the day is slowly nearing! I wanted to make an informational and fun post telling some stuff about mabon and what you can do, movies to watch 🧡
What is Mabon?
Mabon is the autumn equinox dated for September 21-24 this year (2020). The autumnal equinox occurs when the sun crosses the equator on its apparent journey southward, and we experience a day and a night that are of equal duration. Up until Mabon, the hours of daylight have been greater than the hours from dusk to dawn. This is the time to look back not just on the past year, but also your life, and to plan for the future. It marks the middle of the harvest, Mabon is a time of rest and celebration, after the hard work of gathering the crops. Warm autumn days are followed by chill nights, as the Old Sun God returns to the embrace of the Goddess. All Sabbats are occasions to express gratitude to the God and Goddess for the blessings in our lives, but Mabon is particularly so, coming at the height of the harvest season.
How to celebrate Mabon
You can start by decorating your altar if you have one with acorns, pinecones, seasonal fruits and nuts, and some of the colored leaves that drop from the trees in your location. Baskets are good things to use and scythes since they are symbols of harvest. As for candles, autumn colors can be used such as reds, yellows, oranges, golds, and browns. If you have a feast, whether solo or with others, include seasonal vegetables like onions, potatoes, carrots and other root vegetables. Spellwork related to protection and security is appropriate now, as are workings for self-confidence, prosperity, harmony and balance. If you are one who struggles with seasonal depression during the fall and winter months, use this time to set an intention for inner peace and strength. You might make and charge a talisman for this purpose, to accompany you through the next two seasons. You can also do things that aren’t related to witchcraft if you feel unmotivated or don’t have the time. Cozy up and watch some appropriately themed movies maybe even some horror or Halloween movies, make some hot chocolate or a good cup of tea with appropriate herbs to settle down and drink, you can even do things like read or make some cool looking pieces of art to either put on your altar, use as decoration, or just because you want to.

Monster Food Theories (part 2)
(A multi-part essay because I love world-building.)
In part 1 I discussed the theory that monster food is actually made from physical food that’s been infused with magic, and therefore monster food is limited to what can be farmed in the Underground.
In this next part, I’m going to springboard off that idea and talk about what foods exist in the Underground (and therefore what crops and livestock monsters likely have.)
The very first thing I want to look at is what food canonically exists in the game. I’m going to break this up into two sections...
1) Food We Interact With Directly (Healing items we can pick up and get information on.)
* Monster Candy - Has a distinct, non-licorice flavor.  Heals 10 HP. * Spider Donut - A donut made with Spider Cider in the batter.  Heals 12 HP. * Spider Cider - Made with whole spiders, not just the juice.  Heals 24 HP. * Butterscotch Pie - Butterscotch-cinnamon pie, one slice.  Heals ALL HP. * Snail Pie - Heals some HP.  An acquired taste. Heals one less than max HP. * Nice Cream - Instead of a joke, the wrapper says something nice.  Heals 15 HP. * Bisicle - It’s a two-pronged popsicle, so you can eat it twice.  Heals 11 HP. * Unicicle - It’s a SINGLE-pronged popsicle.  Wait that’s just normal... Heals 11 HP. * Cinnamon Bunny - A cinnamon roll in the shape of a bunny.  Heals 22 HP. * Astronaut Food - For feeding a pet astronaut.  Heals 21 HP. * Crab Apple - An aquatic fruit that resembles a crustacean.  Heals 18 HP. * Sea Tea - Made from glowing marsh water.  Increases SPEED for one battle.  Heals 10 HP. * Abandoned Quiche - A psychologically damaged spinach egg pie.  Heals 34 HP. * Temmie Flakes - It’s just torn up pieces of construction paper.  Heals 2 HP. * Dog Salad - Recovers HP (Hit Poodles.)  Heals 2/10/30/ALL HP. * Instant Noodles - Comes with everything you need for a quick meal!  Heals 4/15/90 HP. * Hot Dog...? - The “meat” is made out of something called a “water sausage.”  Heals 20 HP. * Hot Cat - Like a hot dog, but with little cat ears on the end.  Heals 21 HP. * Junk Food - Food that was probably once thrown away.  Heals 17 HP. * Starfait - A sweet treat made of sparkling stars.  Heals 14 HP. * Glamburger - A hamburger made of edible glitter and sequins.  Heals 27 HP. * Legendary Hero - Sandwich shaped like a sword.  Increases ATTACK when eaten.  Heals 40 HP. * Steak in the Shape of Mettaton’s Face - Huge steak in the shape of Mettaton’s face.  You don’t feel like it’s made of real meat... Heals 60 HP. * Popato Chisps - Regular old popato chisps.  Heals 13 HP. (Note:  I’ve chosen to leave the Hush Puppy off of this list, as its description refers to it as a spell.  I’m also excluding the foods that can only be found by digging around in the game files - Puppydough Ice Cream, Pumpkin Rings, Rock Candy, Croquet Roll, Ghost Fruit, and Stoic Onion.)
 2) Food We Only See, or Hear About Through Character Dialogue (I did my best to be thorough here, but please let me know if I missed any and I’ll add them in!)
* Hamburger  (For sale at Grillby’s) * Fries  (For sale at Grillby’s) * Cheese Fries  (Undyne likes them, for sale at Grillby’s) * Ketchup  (Found at Grillby’s / Sans’ Hot Dog Stand) * Mustard  (Found at Sans’ Hot Dog Stand) * Relish  (Found at Sans’s Hot Dog Stand) * Spaghetti  (Made by Papyrus and Undyne) * Lasagna/Ravioli/various other pastas   (Mentioned by Papyrus) * Brewskis (aka Beer)  (Mentioned in a prank call) * Sugar  (In Undyne’s kitchen) * Soda  (In Undyne’s kitchen / Alphys’ Lab) * Hot Chocolate  (Mentioned by Undyne) * Marshmallows  (Mentioned by Undyne) * Golden Flower Tea  (In Undyne’s kitchen / Offered by Asgore) * Grapes  (Undyne talks about Mettaton eating them) * Pizza  (Undyne and Alphys both talk about ordering some) * Limes  (Undyne mentions eating them whole) * Cucumbers  (Come up when Undyne and Papyrus talk about spa treatments) * Carrots  (Mentioned by Asgore on the tapes in the true lab) * Lollipops  (Papyrus mentions getting them from the lady who runs the inn) * Ice cream  (Mentioned multiple times by multiple characters) * Espresso (Mentioned by Red Bird at Grillby’s) * Cake  (Mettaton specifically breaks the ingredients down into SUGAR, MILK, EGGS during his cooking segment) * Artificial Ingredients and Chemicals  (Also mentioned by Mettaton)
(Note: I’m leaving edamame off the list because while Toriel mentions it, she does it as a joke because she’s after the pun.  It’s possible that monsters have edamame, or it could just be something she’s aware exists in the world in general.)
So! Looking at this list, and cross referencing with recipes to find the most basic necessary ingredients to make everything, I can break things down more neatly into categories of available food:
STARCHES * Wheat  * Potatoes * Barley
FRUITS AND VEGETABLES  * Apples * Grapes * Limes * Tomatoes * Cucumbers * Spinach PROTEIN AND DAIRY * Snails * Water sausages * Eggs * Milk
HERBS AND SPICES * Cinnamon * Mustard Seed
MISC * Salt * Sugar * Oil  * Coffee * Chocolate * Assorted artificial ingredients and chemicals  * Golden flowers (unique to the Underground?) * Hops (only because of the mention of “brewskis”)
(Note: I’m excluding a few healing items from contributing to this list.  The Astronaut Food’s origin is nebulous - it sounds like it could possibly be human food that fell from the surface and landed in the dump.  Temmie Flakes are construction paper and not actually food, even if they are technically consumable.  Dog Salad is clearly an outlier and should not be counted.)
When broken down to its base components, it’s a pretty small list.  Monsters don’t seem to have a lot to work with.
A lot of their foods revolve around the same few staple ingredients: Flour, eggs, sugar, and milk products.  From that we can take a guess that there are wheat fields somewhere in the Underground.  Likewise, they likely keep chickens as well for eggs (though other birds like ducks might be a possibility too.)  Sugar and milk have more options.  Sugar might come from sugar cane or sugar beets, while milk could come from a variety of animals, but I think goats or sheep are more likely than cows for a variety of reasons (mainly that cows might be too much of a resource drain to support long term.)
Interestingly, we never get any indication that monsters eat animals besides snails.  The information we get on the hot dogs and steak make it clear that they’re not made out of meat (and if the steaks aren’t meat, it feels reasonable that the hamburgers aren’t either.)  This makes sense, since the Underground has limited space and resources and might not be able to support farms dedicated to raising animals for meat, and/or might not be able to meet the demands of a populace that wants to eat meat regularly.  If it’s eaten at all, meat might be a rare treat.  Otherwise, it looks like the monster population could be largely vegetarian.
With a basic list of crops, we can also make a guess at what sort of alcohols might be available in Grillby’s bar. Monsters have apples, grapes, potatoes, and sugar, so we can guess that in addition to beer (since it gets mentioned specifically), monsters could also have hard cider, wine, brandy, whisky, rum, vodka, and moonshine.
If we want to be a bit more generous and include possible foods and foods that didn’t quite make it officially into the game, we can add back in edamame, pumpkins, and onions.
And, just for fun and going off of nothing except the environment of the game, it wouldn’t be unreasonable to think monsters might be able to round out their pantries with a few other foods that occur naturally in the caverns.  Mushrooms show up in the damper areas of the game, so it’s not far fetched to think that there might be a few edible varieties available. Likewise, we see streams and marshes in Waterfall that support life.  It’s possible that there are fish, crayfish, or shellfish living in there, or possibly other edible plants besides the water sausage.
This went a bit longer than I originally planned, so in the next part I’ll talk about what might make monster food inherently different from human food (even without monsters intentionally doing anything to it), and possibly theories about how and why monsters ended up with this specific, limited variety of foods they seem to be working off of.

HBO Max New Releases: May 2021
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
Do not adjust your WiFi settings. No, you are not experiencing a severe case of Deja Streaming-vu. HBO Max’s list of new releases for May 2021 are indeed highlighted by two very recent WarnerMedia hits.
For starters, Tenet finally makes its long-awaited HBO Max this month. Mark your calendars as May 1 is the day that you can finally watch Christopher Nolan’s latest cerebral thriller. Of course, Tenet already had its theatrical release, but obviously that was not really an option for many of us. In addition to Tenet, Wonder Woman 1984 makes its triumphant return to HBO Max this month on May 13. The Wonder Woman sequel already premiered on HBO Max this past December, now it’s getting a second run on the streamer.
In terms of newer originals, May is relatively light for HBO Max. The Jean Smart-starring comedy Hacks premieres on May 13. The latest Adventure Time: Distant Lands special arrives on May 20. May also contains two prominent finales with The Nevers closing out part 1 of its first season on May 15 and Mare of Easttown wrapping up its case on May 30.
It’s also not a big month for Warner Bros. theatrical releases. The only one to speak of is Those Who Wish Me Dead on May 14. Thankfully that will be augmented by some library titles on May 1 including The Interview, Jackie Brown, and Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.
Here is everything else to expect in May 2021.

Trust in Me Ch4
Here is the next chapter, hope you enjoy!
Loki had been on Midgard for five days, sixteen hours, 47 minutes, and 12 seconds. Not that he had been counting or anything.
Life seemed so mundane here. He would wake up, shower, get dressed, raid the fridge for something he could eat without having to cook, or conveniently poke his head out of his room when Vision had begun cooking.
He would eat and then he would read. Occasionally he would train with Thor when he was allowed to leave the apartment, but that was not often. Loki was on some form of house arrest; he could roam the tower and the lawn but not further.
It’s not like Loki longed to be out in the city he had nearly destroyed, he just hated feeling like a dog on a short leash.
Loki pondered his new normal as he sat on one of the plush sofa’s in the living area, with the faint noise of Vision sautéing onions in the kitchen.
The ‘ping’ of the elevator doors startled Loki from his melancholy.
“Hey Vision! Hey Mr. Loki!” Peter called out, as he entered the room., large backpack in tow.
Loki nodded in the boy’s direction while Vision gave a warm smile.
“Lovely to see you Peter, here for another tutoring session?” Vision inquired.
Peter sighed, “Yeah, I just don’t get this book Vis. Thank goodness for Y/N.”
At the mention of your name, Loki’s gaze shifted from the book in hand to the young spiderling.
As if on que, Y/N emerged from her room carrying a stack of books so high they obscured her vision of the path ahead.
She tilted from side to side, a slight wobble in her step as she walked, but managed to get the books to the coffee table in one piece.
With a satisfied sigh Y/N looked up to take in her surroundings. Loki noticed her posture shift ever so slightly, altering from relaxed to slightly more restrained.
‘Why must she be so guarded in her own home?’ Loki thought.
“Ready Peter?” Y/N spoke in a soft voice, as she took a seat in the sofa opposite Loki.
Peter removed his backpack and slumped onto the sofa in the seat next to the trickster.
“Is anyone ready for Mary Shelley? Why can’t we just do science or engineering?” Peter whined dramatically, with an arm swung over his eyes in mock despair.
“Because you’re not failing science or engineering.” Vision said as a matter of fact, unaware of any offence given.
“Damn that was shady.” Peter mumbled.
“Frankenstein is a beautifully written book…once you get the hang of it.” Y/N spoke, the tiniest hint of a sparkle in her eyes.
As Y/N began to discuss the intricacies of writing structure and character development, Loki found he was drawn further and further out of his own reading. He was intrigued to hear her analysis.
The girl was clearly well read; she spoke with an authority when she discussed literature, there was a confidence in her tone that implied she knew the subject like the back of her hand. This was the most Loki had heard her speak since he had arrived.
“But why does the monster resent Victor? Victor gave him a life and a home. It doesn’t make sense.” Peter said confused and clearly exhausted.
“The creature doesn’t resent Victor; he resents the constraints put upon him.” Y/N explained.
At this point both Vision and Loki were watching her tutor Peter; she was quite a wonder to behold when she was passionate, her eyes sparkled. She smiled as she spoke too, as if the conversation gave her true enjoyment.
“What do you mean?” Peter asked.
“Well, the creature did not ask to be made. He was forced into a world that wasn’t ready for him, expected to know what had not been taught, and to act with morals that had not been demonstrated. Why should he bow his head in apology when no one apologised for making him that way?”
Y/N’s words grew quieter as she neared the end of her speech, a sudden shyness at the realisation she had an audience.
“I never looked at it that way.” Peter spoke thoughtfully.
Peter’s phone buzzed, his alarm telling him the session was over.
“Thanks Y/N, you’re a life saver!” Peter smiled,
Y/N gave a shy smile with a faint blush tinting her cheeks. She began to assort her books into an overly tall pile, walking on uneven footing as she took them back to her room.
Loki inadvertently smiled at the sight.
“Are you guys coming to the firework show tonight?” Peter asked after slugging his heavy backpack onto his shoulders.
“Miss Maximoff and I will be there.” Vision confirmed.
 “Mr Loki?”
Loki looked to the spider child, “No, I don’t think I will.”
Peter smiled, “Maybe next time then.” He said, his tone assuring.
Loki gave a tight-lipped smile, “Maybe.”
Peter hesitated, “Should I ask Y/N?”
Vision gave a sad smile, “She won’t come Peter.”
Peter nodded sadly but accepted Visions answer.
Loki wondered how many times she had declined an offer like that.
Y/N returned from her room a little while later and watched Vision, Peter and Wanda wrap themselves up in scarves and winter coats. Wanda was giddy with excitement at trying the hot apple cider. They waved excitedly, Peter promising to bring Y/N back a candy apple.
Y/N looked longingly at their retreating forms. Perhaps it would have been fun to join them, to see the bright colours of the fireworks first-hand, and to smell the hot butter from the popcorn stand.
‘I bet it would be fun.’ Y/N thought.
The few times Y/N had dared to leave the tower had ended in disaster. Even when Tony made Happy and Rhodey go with her for protection, she had been met with shouts of abuse. One man had hurled a horribly lewd comment her way, prompting Rhodey to put him in a headlock.
Everyone seemed on high alert when Y/N left the tower; they couldn’t relax out of fear someone would attack or verbally abuse her. That wasn’t fair on them, they worked hard for their time off, they deserved to relax.
So eventually she stopped going out, it was safer that way.
Y/N was snapped put of her dwellings by Loki’s voice.
“If you want to go with them you should just go.” Loki spoke with disinterest, an admittedly poor attempt to hide his intrigue.
Y/N hesitated, “That’s okay, I can watch from the window.” She forced a smile, but she knew it hadn’t reached her eyes.
It would be just her and Loki in the apartment tonight, and Y/N began to wonder how to process that fact.
Should she retire early? It was only seven o’clock, maybe she could make some warm milk and fall asleep to a good movie.
Or she could talk to him.
He had shown her small kindnesses in the few days he had been at the tower. When she was struggling socially, he didn’t push but he didn’t turn away, he just let her be.
 She could do the same.
 So she did.
“Um..” She started, successfully grabbing attention.
“Would you like to watch with me?” She asked, hands trembling under her overgrown sleeves.
“Excuse me?” Loki asked, unsure of the question.
“The umm… fireworks? We can watch the show from here.” She said, gesturing to the large window of their apartment, looking over the city.
“If you want to…” She said, beginning to feel foolish.
“If you want to.” Loki thought over her words. Did he want to?
Over the last few days, the two of them had seemingly developed an understanding. They were content to be around each other without pressing for personal details. But, if Loki agreed to actively take part in something with her, did that make this something more?
Did it make them friends? Granted, he found himself gravitating towards her company more than anyone else’s in the tower, mostly because she was quiet and wouldn’t look at him with disdain. But friendship seemed excessive, he wasn’t here to make friends.
No, he wouldn’t entertain the thought of socialising with this girl. He didn’t care if she wanted to watch the fireworks, she can go watch them by herself, in her room, away from him. He would, by no means, make this into something more than it was. Absolutely not.
 “Okay.” Loki said.
Clearly his mouth and mind were out of sync.

                                             CHARACTER INTERVIEW
Tumblr media
BASICS  !
NAME .   Mur.doc Fau.st Nicc.als (born Mur.doc Alph.once Nicca.ls). NICKNAME .   Muds, Mudsy, [Uncle] Murdy. AGE .   38 (main verse) / 52 (as of present day). SPECIES .   human... ish.
PERSONAL  !
MORALITY .   lawful / chaotic / good / neutral / evil  / true. RELIGION .   spiritual / neutral / anti-religion / uncertain. SINS .   greed / gluttony / sloth / lust / pride / envy / wrath. VIRTUES .   chastity / charity / diligence / humility / kindness / patience / justice. KNOWN LANGUAGES .   he can speak modern day english, spanish, german, dutch and limited japanese (learned through communication with noo.dle). while he cannot speak these languages, he can pick up on certain latin, old english, middle english and demoniac phrases through reading. he also understands sacred geometry. SECRETS .   he’s much more emotionally fragile than he lets on.  he’s deeply envious of 2.D’s good looks, sweet nature and relatively happy upbringing.  he doesn’t have any love for himself.  he’s passionate about science and engineering.  he has a soft spot for animals and children.  he thinks deeply about the state of the world and about how things work.  his attraction to women isn’t, and never has been, sincere.
PHYSICAL  !
BUILD .   scrawny / bony / slender / fit / athletic / curvy / herculean / pudgy / average. HEIGHT .   5′6″ without heels, 5′7″ with heels. SCARS  /  BIRTHMARKS .   numerous cigarette burns can be found on his arms, wrists and thighs (partially self-inflicted and partially the result of years of abuse during his childhood). a self-inflicted knife scar can be found on his inner right forearm, concealed by his octopus tattoo. the back of his left calf was torn open during childhood by a plank of wood, which also left a noticeable scar. bullet wounds left scars on his left shoulder (acquired during the plas.tic bea.ch era). a vertical scar on his chest is the result of coronary bypass surgery (acquired shortly before the huma.nz era began). his back is also littered with scars as the result of his extremely abusive upbringing. ABILITIES  /  POWERS .   he heals much faster than what is expected of a human being, which he chalks down to sheer dumb luck. he also possesses much more durability than the average human, which explains how he managed to survive years of rampant substance abuse. much to his own astonishment, he’s never contracted an STD - a piece of information he’s kept to himself out of fear he’ll be ridiculed or seen as “sexually inexperienced”. some claim that mur.doc has a strange, alluring energy that draws people towards him and gets them on his side (at least for a little while). his pain tolerance is also quite high. RESTRICTIONS .   he doesn’t possess anything like superhuman strength or speed or agility - in that regard, he’s pretty average (sometimes even below average, depending on how debilitating the state of his health is). while scrappy, resourceful and extremely cunning, he isn’t the most formidable opponent in physical combat and can be overpowered if you’re a lot bigger than him or manage to catch him off-guard.
FAVORITES !
FOOD .   while he boasts about having exquisite taste, he secretly loves fast food (burgers, fries, onion rings, pizza, hot dogs, etc), sour candy and black liquorice. other favourites include tropical fruit (especially bananas, coconut, pineapple and mango), heavily seasoned foods, seafood, and outlandish things most people wouldn’t touch (i.e. pickled herring, blue cheese, etc). DRINK .   rum, vodka (black or the umbongo cocktail recipe), whiskey, absinthe, strongbow cider. PIZZA TOPPING .  garlic, black olives and anchovies. all at the same time. COLOUR .   blue, green, turquoise, black, red, grey. MUSIC GENRE .   old school heavy metal, hard rock, grunge / alternative, punk rock, new wave, hip-hop and funk, to name just a few. BOOK GENRE .   philosophy, horror, true crime, narrative poetry, social science, political fiction and transgressive fiction. MOVIE GENRE .   horror, westerns, crime dramas, romantic dramas. CURSE WORD .   fuck, arse, shit. SCENTS .   alcohol, perspiration, sea salt, ozone, cheap cologne, cigarettes, iron. occasionally pine or mint.
FUN STUFF  !
BOTTOM OR TOP .   bottom-leaning verse, which compliments his top-leaning verse boyfriend perfectly. SINGS IN THE SHOWER .   when he thinks he’s alone? yes. LIKES PUNS .   he acts like he hates them but he’s canonically made a few himself.

The 38 Essential Chicago Restaurants
Superdawg’s founders, Maurie and Flaurie Berman, stand guard over this venerable Chicago drive-in as customers can spot those giant hot dog statues bearing their likenesses from miles away at the intersection of Devon, Nagle, and Milwaukee. Superdawg is a throwback dining experience where customers park their cars and talk to staff through crackling drive-in speakers and carhops bring out trays of food. Superdawg isn’t a traditional Chicago-style dog, but it is a tradition. It uses a proprietary thick all-beef sausage that comes with mustard, pickled green tomato, and chopped Spanish onions. This is all cradled in a box of crinkle fries.

What is quite possibly the first Michelin-starred brewpub lies on the North Side of Chicago. Gourmet dishes emerge from the kitchen during tasting menus, while brunch services and the bar menu provide a taste to diners on a tight budget. Creative beer selections are brewed on-site, which, combined with a beautiful Victorian-inspired space, make Band of Bohemia a one-of-a-kind operation in the entire country. The menu has plenty of veggie options, including a carrot that’s magical.

With two smokers to prep meaty St. Louis-style ribs, tender brisket, apple-and-oak-smoked pulled pork and more, this ‘cue joint in the Northwest Side neighborhood of Irving Park stands up to any within a thousand miles. Outside of Carolina or Texas, it’s hard to find better barbecue than the casual counter-service Smoque.

It may not serve your momma’s fried chicken — with bones, skin, et al — but Honey Butter Fried Chicken makes swaths of Chicagoans feel like kids again when they dip their birds in that addictive honey butter. Since expanding from supper club to Avondale brick-and-mortar in fall 2013, lines form during peak lunch and dinner hours but move quickly at the cozy counter-service space. Don’t forget the house-made iced teas, alcoholic drinks, and specials sometimes created by noteworthy guest chefs.

Few chefs share the talent and drive that Diana Dávila exhibits while showcasing a dazzling display of small Mexican dishes in Logan Square. Dávila isn’t shy about risks; she isn’t pandering to the typical American diner. The bustling full-service spot offers albondigas and dishes like peanut butter and tongue push boundaries, yet there’s also a delectable steak burrito on the menu for those in the mood.

Before Logan Square had a multitude of acclaimed creative restaurants and farm-to-table was a buzz-phrase, there was Lula Café. More than a decade on, it’s easy to see why people flock for its creative dinner menu, line-inducing Sunday brunch and Monday night farm dinners. Dishes change seasonally and sometimes daily, with stars that include standout local produce and meats prepared in unexpected ways. What diners can expect is a wait at brunch and dinner, but weekday breakfasts are quiet and cozy.

Chicago hadn’t seen this level of Middle Eastern food before acclaimed chef Zach Engel moved from New Orleans to open this smash hit in Lincoln Park. Engel, who won a James Beard Award for Rising Star Chef during his time in the Big Easy, elevates hummus, pita, and more to unforeseen heights at this Israeli excelsior, where reservations have been difficult to secure since its opening in April 2019. Diners sit at the long kitchen counter to watch Engel and team top pools of silky hummus with trumpet mushrooms, fried chicken skin and collard greens, and pull perfect pillows of wood-fired pitas from the coal-burning oven. The salatim — an array of Israeli accoutrements served with pita — coal-fired entrees, and Middle Eastern spins on classic cocktails are also stars here.

Chicago’s sushi reputation is not as esteemed as cities along the coastlines, but a number of new restaurants are changing that perception. At the top of the list is Otto Phan’s omakase experience — the Japanese concept of chef’s choice — in a nondescript space in Logan Square. Phan’s intimate eight-seat counter provides an up-close look at his bold personality and distinctive style, which is highlighted by larger-than-normal rice grains seasoned with aged red vinegar and premium quality ingredients imported from overseas. The luxurious offerings include fried tilefish crowned with creme fraiche and Osetra caviar, and fatty toro seared on charcoal. The $220 price tag for 18-plus bites — plus extra for beverages — makes it a special destination. A $100 deposit is required to secure a reservation.

While the savory food and the drinks are very good, the sweets and the hot chocolates are predictably not to be missed from an owner with a James Beard award for best pastry chef (Mindy Segal). Crowds flock to this Chicago icon for brunch and peak-hour dinner services, so lunch service is a great bet for minimal waits at the Bucktown superstar. Grant Achatz and Nick Kokonas’s three-Michelin-starred avant garde fine dining institution is quite simply one of the world’s best restaurants. Food obsessives make pilgrimages from around the globe to the 10-year-old Lincoln Park restaurant to experience Achatz’s emotional, interactive, and expensive tasting menus, which play out in a recently renovated backdrop that now features three distinct dining options. It clocked in at No. 37 on the most recent World’s 50 Best List in 2019 and was among Eater National’s best restaurants in America. Dishes change often on the tasting menus, but the edible balloon and tabletop dessert are among those that put it on the world stage. A long staircase runs along the left side of the room going up. The best example of Chicago’s iconic Italian beef sandwiches exists outside of the city at the two suburban locations of Johnnie’s Beef. The space is a throwback as the original fast-food spot opened in 1961 in Elmwood Park and a second has since opened in Arlington Heights. The menu is simple: beefs, charcoal-grilled Italian sausages, and hot dogs. Pepper-and-egg sandwiches are also available daily; they’re mostly aimed at Catholic customers during Lent Fridays needing a “meat-free” option. Johnnie’s also serves stellar lemon Italian ice. The thin-cut beef is moist and perfectly seasoned with hints of oregano. The hot peppers deliver plenty of heat but don’t overwhelm the meat. Don’t sleep on the beef-sausage sandwich. While the city has plenty of beef options, Johnnie’s is worth the drive to the ‘burbs.

Chicago’s steakhouse tradition can be best experienced at Gibsons, the swanky Gold Coast institution that Eater readers voted the best steakhouse in America’s meatiest city. Chicago’s food scene got a jolt of fresh air when former Avec and Nico Osteria chef de cuisine Erling Wu-Bower opened this breezy California-inspired restaurant in River North in conjunction with his One Off Hospitality mentors Paul Kahan and Donnie Madia. Bower and team churn out a casual menu of light fare utilizing precise execution and exquisite ingredients, spanning a myriad of light cuisines from warm weather locales such as Middle Eastern-inspired large-format duck, pitas that utilize ahi tuna and beef tartare, dumplings and pizzas. Reservations are recommended, although tables are easier to find during lunch and brunch services at the 2018 Eater Chicago Restaurant of the Year.

Rick Bayless’s Mexican haven in River North, including Xoco on the corner, is a Chicago institution spawning spinoffs around the globe of south of the border fare from street food to high end. At Frontera Grill, his original restaurant, folks flock from around the globe to wait in line (there’s only limited reservations) for casual, festive, groundbreaking regional Mexican fare. At Topolobampo, connected through a side doorway, Bayless’ team serves gorgeous, mind-blowing Michelin-starred tasting menus.

The template for one of the country’s top chefs and restaurant groups (Paul Kahan’s One Off Hospitality), their temple to pork, fish, charcuterie and beer is stronger than ever, as evidenced by spinoffs across the street and at O’Hare International Airport, and a spot on Eater National’s best restaurants in America list. Don’t mistake the boisterous atmosphere with long beer hall-esque communal tables for pedestrian food or no waits, as it remains one of Chicago’s toughest tables, even for the standout brunch.

2016 saw a slew of great restaurant openings but Noah Sandoval’s West Loop stunner perhaps shined the brightest. He, along with his wife Cara, are leading the way for a new generation of fine dining that’s coupling refined, upscale dishes on its tasting menu, from its caviar starter staple to a Japanese A5 wagyu, all in a laid-back experience. Critics and diners alike have been impressed, with the Michelin Guide awarding the restaurant two stars in its first year. A dining room with exposed brick walls and wooden floors and ceilings. Boka Restaurant Group isn’t short on heavy hitters but its majestic modern Japanese restaurant is arguably the crown jewel of the company. Spread across three floors, Momotaro blends traditional Japanese ingredients and flavors with contemporary technique for a breathtaking experience. The menu is divided between sushi and robata bites and includes luxuries such as A5 wagyu steak and pristine fatty tuna. For a more casual meal and drinks, the lower-level izakaya offers similarly remarkable options like chicken karaage, uni spaghetti, and ramen.

Chicagoans have few choices for upscale Indian food downtown. Rooh’s 2019 arrival is noteworthy not only because it fills that void, but it also gives the West Loop one of the most unique restaurants in the city. Patrons will be more than impressed with familiar classics such as butter chicken, but jackfruit kofta, gunpowder scallops, and achari monkfish give diners a sliver of modern Indian cooking. All this inside a comfortable space worthy of Randolph Restaurant Row. Look for fun, spiced cocktails to round out the experience. Reservations are recommended for the spinoff of the San Francisco restaurant that opened in 2017.

The first restaurant from former Top Chef and Spiaggia chef Sarah Grueneberg has quickly cemented itself as one of Chicago’s top Italian destinations and its tough-to-get reservations are a prime example. The pastas are the stars at the West Loop hotspot, such as cannelloni saltimbocca with merguez lamb sausage, manchego cheese, peas, harissa, and balsamico, many of which are made on a small demonstration stage of sorts behind the bar. Also try non-pasta dishes such as the skate wing schnitzel and ‘nduja arancini, as well as a standout wine list. A simple, sleek bar with backed stools and a rack for pasta. The torchbearer for a dying breed of Jewish delis and diners in Chicago, Manny’s has endured for more than a half-century in the South Loop thanks to massive and delicious pastrami sandwiches, an array of hot homestyle dishes on steam tables, and family service cultivated over generations in a cafeteria-style setting plastered with decades-old newspaper clippings and letters from Chicago luminaries. The space also now houses a new deli expansion for bagels, sweets, coffee, and food to go.

HaiSous is a remarkable comeback story for the husband-and-wife team of Thai and Danielle Dang in Pilsen. Thai Dang showcases his heritage Vietnamese flavors through a number of techniques, including claypot cooking, on a menu that’s as ambitious as it’s unpretentious with dishes like grilled wild boar with lemongrass. The neighboring cafe is great for a banh mi or an iced coffee sourced with beans from Dang’s family in Vietnam. The duo worked at acclaimed West Loop restaurant Embeya, but at HaiSous they’re free to express themselves more honestly to create a dining experience worthy of a celebration, or just a wonderful weeknight meal, or even a coffee and a sandwich.

Chicago has long had a history of top-notch African American-owned restaurants that focus on regional Southern cooking, but the city may not have had a restaurant like Virtue before. Chef-owner Erick Williams combines the skill and precision honed through years of fine-dining experience with soulful, family Southern recipes in dishes including cauliflower with cashew dukkah and root cellar vegetables, and heavenly beef short ribs with creamed spinach and crushed potatoes. The restaurant has quickly become a dining beacon in Hyde Park and one of America’s Best New Restaurants, so reservations are recommended for dinner but there’s also a large bar room and a lively brunch. When it comes to pizza, Chicago’s reputation around the country often centers on deep dish. But thin-crust tavern-style pizza — another pizza style that’s unique to Chicago — is actually much more prevalent and popular with locals, and few if any do it better than South Side institution Vito & Nick’s Pizzeria. Thin, crunchy dough is baked with char on top and cut into small squares with very little crust on the outside. In business for nearly a century and making pizzas for more than 60 years, Vito & Nick’s is an always-bustling, family-friendly pizza destination that’s a must-visit for any food enthusiast, so be prepared for a wait for a table or just take a pie to go.
