I feel like in recent years there been an increase in producers and directors who create shows and movies with the intent to say “fuck you” to the audience/parts of the audience.
And it really bothers me because at best it’s bad storytelling. And at worst is upsets and alienates fans.
There are ways to address racism and sexism on screen without straight up harassing all white characters and male characters. (Hi new Velma show).
Fans should be encouraged to speculate and guess the ending and if they guess right, that means the story makes logical sense. (Looking at you Rian Johnson and GOT directors).
Even if you have a point you want to make with your audience, you need to acknowledge that movies and shows are storytelling mediums. If people wanted to learn about the history of racism within the justice system and how it relates to drugs, they’d watch a documentary. It is possible to create shows and movies that cover hard hitting topics and explore societal problems that are still good stories. There are ways to shock the audience without tossing out all the clues previously dropped. And these giant entertainment companies have the money and resources to find and hire good storytellers but they actively choose not to and instead support films and shows that are intended to be reactionary to the audience it’s geared for.
And as an aspiring author, I’m tired of it.

Fun Fact : The divisive Game of Thrones series finale (2019's The Iron Throne, premiere date : May 19 2019) aired exactly 20 years after the US release date of the equally divisive movie Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (May 19 1999).

The thing about that film festival panel with the writers of Game of Thrones is that it made HBO look awful too. You really had these writers, openly boasting about how little they understand TV-making, so bad they had to reshoot the pilot and film extra scenes through the season, and saying "yeah, HBO kept giving us millions of dollars no matter how often we fucked up and cost them money". Of course everyone will zero in on the infinite chances they gave these two unproven white dudes, we all know they wouldn't let even an experienced woman or POC creator make even one mistake like that, much less a "go reshoot the entire thing" level fuck up (or a "every episode is running short so go film extra scenes" level fuck up)
But that panel did save us from their Confederate alternate history show and Star Wars trilogy so there's that

Ok, I admit I have no idea what "Masters of the Air" is about so... convince me to watch it 👀 How would you describe it to a stranger?
i managed to get several people into it so, uhm let’s see 🤓
masters of the air centers on the 100th bombardier group of the american air force during wwii. i’ve never been too much into neither wwi nor wwii bc i detest war—i mean, who doesn’t? but i’ve always avoided media with it at its core bc it’s very unsettling to me to see the horrors human kind are able to provoke on one another (same thing with true crime shows, podcast etc, i just cannot)
1917 (dir. sam mendes) changed something in me when i watched it—it was probably the first time i watched something war centered that didn’t center so much on the actual war but the people in it, their relationships, their humanity, good humanity. so, it became one of my all time favorite films and opened my curiosity for these type of stories within war. and masters of the air falls right in that category for me—it has kindness, friendship and love as a center core to it in a setting which is nothing but despair and terror, and that speaks to me, so much!
since masters of the air, i’ve watched the other hbo war shows of this spielberg/hanks trilogy, which i hadn’t been able to do before because of what i mentioned earlier, and whilst the other two were much more raw and gore and harder for me to watch, i found that humanity within them too and i’m very glad i’ve watched them now.
and if you weren’t a stranger, but a fellow alexander enthusiast who i’ve known for years (cough, cough) i’d say HELLO WE HAVE AN HEXANDER EQUIVALENT SHIP IN THIS SHOW RUNNNNN
and if you want the short, concise version. pretty boys suffering some terrors.
i hope i’ve convinced you, eos 😌💕

20 questions for fic writers
tagged by the lovely @doodledrawreblogs - thanks cy!
1. How many works do you have on Ao3? 104 (it will be 105 after my yuletide fic is posted)
2. What's your total Ao3 word count? 1,296,866
3. What fandoms do you write for? i've written fic for legend of korra, milo murphy's law, the dragon prince, star wars, ted lasso, top gun / top gun: maverick, 9-1-1 lone star, what we do in the shadows (tv), a league of their own (tv), mission: impossible, our flag means death, perry mason hbo, and night court.
4. What are your top five fics by kudos?
when i see your face (top gun, icemav, 1.4k) - 5018 kudos
Moving In Slow Motion (top gun, icemav, 7.5k) - 3044 kudos
Make A Wrong One Right (top gun, icemav, 18.8k) - 2313 kudos
baby, baby, i'd get down on my knees for you (top gun, icemav, 18k, cowritten with @academicgangster) - 2290 kudos
Word on the Street (top gun, icemav, outsider pov, 3.8k) - 1991 kudos
5. Do you respond to comments? yes! if you are kind enough to read one of my fics and leave a comment, i always do my best to reply, even if it's just a string of heart emojis.
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? probably Like Attracts Like - it's a companion piece to my legend of korra mash au sometimes you hear the bullet, and ends with zhu li (the radar of the story) getting word of varrick's plane going down a la henry blake in abyssinia, henry. truthfully, i'm not a big writer of angsty endings. angsty beginnings and middles, definitely, but i prefer all my fics to have a happy ending.
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? see basically all of my fics have happy endings, but i think the happiest ending i've written goes to the end of I Know I'm Home, my robisanya au where sam matched with dani on bantr and not rebecca. in the final chapter, all the loose ends get tied up: richmond wins the premier league, roy and keeley get married, and sam and dani have the 'i'm going to marry you someday' talk. nothing but sweetness all around.
8. Do you get hate on fics? the only hate i've ever gotten on a fic was for one of my star wars sequel trilogy rewrites, and that was from some reylos who didn't like the anti-reylo things i was saying on my star wars sideblog, so... nah.
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind? i do and i have definitely gotten better at it over the years (though i still have a Long way to go lmao). i've only published m/m, but i've written some f/m smut (as you will see when i publish my degas/paris fic next year 😏)
10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written? indeed i do. craziest (or at least most ambitious) has gotta be there's a raging fire in my heart tonight, my top gun/mcu crossover. (craziest crossover i've ever come up with is the night court / perry mason hbo crossover that @saltyfilmmajor and @bornforastorm have been enabling me to write)
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen? no thankfully
12. Have you ever had a fic translated? yes! when i see your face has been translated into korean and chinese, Lead Me On (To The Other Side) has been translated into korean, and (I Love You) A Bushel and A Pallet and Moving In Slow Motion have both been translated into chinese.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before? yes, i wrote baby, baby, i'd get down on my knees for you with @academicgangster and wrote Austin Alone with @lilalbatross
14. What’s your all time favorite ship? i'm picking three for how they have influenced me and my writing: boasami, finnrey, and icemav.
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will? there are So Many of these....my google drive is essentially a graveyard of unfinished wips
16. What are your writing strengths? dialogue for sure. i've also been told my characterization is great and i have good comedic timing.
17. What are your writing weaknesses? action scenes and smut
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic? i've done this before - usually i run it through google translate and then check other translation sites to be sure it's as accurate as possible. i've included the to-english translations in some fics (namely my top gun ones where i've written ice speaking russian) but mostly leave out the to-english translations these days. usually when my characters speak a different language you can pick up what they're saying from context.
19. First fandom you wrote for? the first fandom i wrote for was (i think) icarly, but the first fandom i published fic for was legend of korra.
20. Favorite fic you’ve written? varies depending on the mood i'm in (and also i have written a Lot of fic so it is difficult to choose lmao). right now i'd say Word on the Street - i'm still really proud of how that one came together.
tagging @icemankazansky @lookforanewangle @lilalbatross @hacash @saltyfilmmajor @bornforastorm @maverickcalf @academicgangster and anyone else who wants to do this :)

20, 36, 47 for the book asks? 🥰
thank you, killy!! <3
20. Where and how do you find new books to read?
There's a few people I follow online who post some good recommendations but mostly I like to browse book shops myself - my camera roll is absolutely FULL of photos I take of books I want to read whenever I go to Waterstones. Unfortunately I DO judge a book by it's cover - if your book's ugly I'm literally just not picking it up unless I already like the author I'm SORRY (I'm not)
Also one of my uni tutors likes to email me book recs shoutout to her thank you queen <3
36. Your absolute most favourite character(s) from any book you've ever read
Fang Runin - The Poppy War trilogy by R.F. Kuang
Literal insane person who has never done a single morally excusable thing in her LIFE and yet??? that's my girl. I love her SO much. she's absolutely batshit but that's why she's the best. let women be crazy!!!
Inej Ghafa - Six of Crows duology by Leigh Bardugo
Six of Crows was the book that got me out of a 3-year reading slump after I finished my English GCSEs and GODDDD does Inej have my heart to this DAY
Jon Snow - A Song of Ice and Fire series by George R.R. Martin
HBO the things you did to my boy??? unforgivable. that's my little guy, I don't care that his chapters aren't the most interesting of the series (Sansa you have my heart), that's Literally My Son. hugging his siblings one more time would literally fix him I'm clawing at the walls of my prison cell
47. What are the last 3 books you read?
Percy Jackson and The Lightning Thief - Rick Riordan (catching up on the books ik would've changed my life as an 11 year old)
The Dragon Republic - R.F. Kuang
The Terror - Dan Simmons (decent but NOT anywhere near as good as the show. so long for what, Dan???)

@hesbuckcompton-baby tagged me in this one, ty! 💚I know a lot of folks have gone and done this one already, but please if you wanna do it consider yourself tagged right now! misc tag game!
favorite place in the world you’ve visited?
I really loved Prague when I went there for a citytrip aeons ago. The atmosphere of that city and its chill style really vibed with me. We’d rented an apartment, so it felt way less like visiting and more like living there for a couple of days. Remember just standing on the balcony in the very early morning watching the locals waking up and starting their day – that sense of utter inner tranquillity I had in that moment has really stuck with me.
something you’re proud of yourself for?
Uhm, I dropped out of school when I was fifteen. That part isn’t a point of pride, just a fact of life. And I had a lot of people pushing me this way and that way since, telling me I’d never make it and that I needed to sacrifice pretty much all of my mental health in order to fit the standard idea of what fifteen-year-olds should be doing with their time. I didn’t listen to them and started to carve out my own way instead. We’re almost twenty years on from my dropping out, and I can safely say this: I made it. I’ve got a great job I love, I’ve got people around me who lift me up, and my mental health is good enough for me to thrive 90% of the time. I have worked my ass off to get to where I am right now, and fought a long uphill battle to make life sing again. And it’s made me so resilient and so certain of myself, you know? I’m superproud of myself for sticking around in this world and making something awesome of my own path in it.
favorite books?
Rebecca (by Daphne du Maurier), Anna Karenina (by Tolstoy), Son of the Shadows (by Juliet Marillier), The Braided Path trilogy (by Chris Wooding), and Ash: A Secret History (by Mary Gentle).
something that makes your heart happy when thinking about it?
The prospect of curling up on the couch/in bed with a really good book for company. Can’t beat that!
favorite thing about your culture?
The way I almost went “which culture” lmao. 😂 Which really almost is an answer in itself, as I think Dutch culture is a collective of many different things? We’re traders/explorers by nature and our identity tends to slip into something pretty multifaceted. That said, I come from a specific part of this country where people still routinely speak a dialect and where the cultural events are a lot more in-your-face celebratory. My fave thing about this particular cultural offshoot, which I grew up in, is that you can play all the Dutch-language songs you could ever want without anyone bothering to so much as hum the tune… but the second you play a song in my dialect is the second you get the whole crowd singing along. Something about poetic expression? Yeah.
when did you join the hbo war fandom? what was the first show you watched?
In 2020! At least, that’s when I immersed into the fandom here on Tumblr and watched Band of Brothers/The Pacific back-to-back. Gen Kill was actually my first, though, as I’d read that book some years before and watched that one without fandom-dipping first.
have you read any of easy company’s books? if so, which ones were your favorite?
Yes! Bill & Babe’s book is so nice.
favorite hbo war character and your favorite moment with them?
*inhales* Speirs. Night time, speech time. Local forest cryptid says shady shit about war, more at eleven. I’ll never be normal about him so.
do you make content for any fandoms, if so; what sort of content?
Fun fact: I usually advocate against using the term ‘content’ when describing creative pursuits, for reasons I’m not gonna get into right now because that’s a rant for when I’m feeling particularly feisty. That said, I’m a writer and gifmaker. I’m more known for the latter, but the former is where my heart really lies.
favorite actor/actress and your favorite film of theirs?
I have a few favorites that’re way up there in terms of how mesmerizing they are, but I’m going to mention one that isn’t mentioned nearly enough: Tom Pelphrey. Truly one of the most captivating actors of our time. He tends to do TV shows more than movies – please, look up his monologue from Ozark if you have a moment – and so I get to rec Banshee to y’all while I’m at it. He’s amazing in that.
favorite quote/s that you wish to share with others?
Look, I’ve lived by the words “seize the day because tomorrow you might be dead” for years now. I think it originated in Buffy, but I’ve adopted it and it’s mine now. Life wisdom from yours truly, boom.
random fact your mutuals/followers don’t know about you?
I’m really into astronomy, outer space, etc.
if you’re a writer, do you need a beta reader?
I used to have beta readers back when I started writing, yeah, so I’m not gonna advocate against using one. Sometimes you need that extra pair of eyes, that nitpicking, that moment of being confronted with your own hubris. I’m my own beta at this point in my writing journey, but I still have a group of people around me who get first dibs on reading my stuff because I trust they’ll give it to me straight and pick out any lingering idiocies on my end. Which doesn’t stop me from shoving something onto the internet that has never seen an edit a day in its life, ahem.
three things that make you smile?
Put me near an alpaca and watch my face brighten, I dare ya. Also big fan of bookstores. Even bigger fan of AO3’s notification mails for fic reviews.
any nicknames you like?
Killy’s my most-used nickname, and we’re vibing!
list some people you love to see around on tumblr!
If I follow you, I love to see ya. That’s just how this thing works. But I’m gonna shout out my writing-and-life-support crew here because without them I would be nowhere much at all: @mercurygray, @junojelli, @shoshiwrites, @arethosedustyjumpwings. You lot are the real deal who’ve stuck to me like glue, and that means so much more than words can say.
what would you do during a zombie apocalypse?
Look, I have a zombie survival plan drawn up in my head but it essentially involves not being near people ever again. Because we’ve gone through a pandemic now and I don’t trust people to follow quarantine instructions or anything else that mildly inconveniences them. So. In the event of a zombie apocalypse, I’m sorry in advance, I’m gonna cry-scream-piñatapunch my way through any and all stupidity. If you see me running, please know I’m being chased because there’s no other way you’ll ever see me running voluntarily.
favourite movie?
Singin’ In The Rain. This needs no further explanation.
do you like horror movies?
Yes and no. I do not vibe with horror movies that get really gory for the sake of shock value. Can’t do it, won’t do it. But I’m a biiiiiiig fan of the final girl trope, I can’t go a day without pondering vampires, and I really love old horror movies and the progression of horror stories throughout the years. It’s fascinating to me to see how specific types of horror interact with the history/culture of that time it was created in: horror is never created in a vacuum, and its storytelling beats are so inspirational.
