“Shiro! They have a good hotel breakfast!” Matt came running back into the main bedroom while flapping his hands excitedly.

Shiro, suddenly awake and alert at the promise of a decent breakfast, dropped his toothbrush into the sink. “Wait really, I was convinced they stopped serving those like, fifteen years ago?!”

Matt nodded, “Yeah right. But they’ve got the whole shabang; waffles, fruit, pancakes, chocolate syrup, pastries, everything!”

Safe to say the small group spent a long time at the breakfast bar.

In contrast to all the hotel buffet breakfast, last month I went hiking and stayed overnight at a minshuku (family-run b&b-like inn). Their breakfast tends to be much cheaper and simpler—serve yourself rice and green tea, rounded out with miso soup, grilled fish, a raw egg (which they’ll usually offer to cook, at least if you're foreign), a side like kinpira burdock, and pickles and nori. Tasty and filling and not overwhelming.

Though you do give up freedom compared to hotels—checking in, we had a very Japanese conversation with the owner, who said we could have breakfast anytime, asked when we wanted it, then kept asking when we wanted it, over and over, until we landed on the secret correct answer (which was 7:30). It was late at night and there was obviously no negotiating, so i agreed. But then his wife, showing us to our room, said, “See you for breakfast at….. 8, right?” and smiled and closed the door. A true hero.

21-27 January: hotel brekkies in Iceland

I love a good hotel breakfast - who doesn't?? and this one was GOOD. Pictured here are breakfast (left) and lunch (right) from our first day in Reykjavik. My tummy was so happy, especially with the honeydew and pancakes from the breakfast buffet. I tried different foods each morning but always got some honeydew melon *yum!*

For lunch, the only time we had lunch in the hotel restaurant, I was obsessed with the corn salad. I don't know what all it contains, but I do want to try recreating it. And not to brag but the Icelandic lamb steaks were also delicious omg - I don't normally eat red meats but I'll make an exception once or twice a year for lamb or a good burger (I made several exceptions all week in Iceland sorry oops)

13/10, no complaints at all

bonus pics: I put pesto on scrambled eggs one morning and ate it with falafel, and it's my new favorite way to eat scrambled eggs. 10/10 would recommend!

also I appreciate the hotel's signs on the table saying basically you can take as much as you want from the buffet but don't waste food - it made me feel comfortable going up a second time, and I certainly didn't waste anything xD

NOTE TO SELF: The Courtyard down the street was booked, so I stayed here for a change. I should be eating this breakfast instead of going to Starbucks. This place even had dried cherries for the oatmeal. Now if I could just get them to make me an Ice Shaken Espresso with no classic syrup...
