Hello! I hope you don’t mind me asking, but what brush do you use to create your digital artwork?
Hi! No, of course I don't mind at all 🥰
Here's the breakdown of my most used brushes:
Tumblr media
Honestly 95% of my work really is just the "Pencil Grad" brush for sketching, my modified "6B Pencil" for lineart, and the "Soft Brush Texture" and "Gouache" brushes for everything else!
The "Jingsketch" brushes are part of a pack that I had purchased from [here on gumroad!]
For the life of me, I cannot remember where I got the "Pencil Grad" brush from, but the "Angled Sketching Pencil" from the Jingsketch brush pack is super similar in how it behaves!
As for the modifications I made to the default Procreate 6B Pencil to make it more suitable for my tastes for lineart, I really only just slightly increased the streamlining and stabilization, removed some of the pressure-sensitive opacity behavior, and increased the brush flow! Basically, I wanted it to be just the tiniest bit more sensitive, smooth, and opaque but still retain some of that sketchier/gritty quality 🤌
Lastly, these aren't brushes, however I feel like they've become very integral to the "look" of my art because I just looooove the last step of adding one of these to finish off a piece– but I use the paper textures from JessicaElena [here on Etsy] over my whole artwork, set to "overlay" and it just adds that grainier, cozy paper look that I just adore 🥰

Okay so I have to work on my business card logo for this upcoming event right and I did start it like two years ago
And
In those two years
I forgot the kind of progress I made
Which is!!
Tumblr media
I cannot overstate how much I don’t want to screw this up and at the same time I have no choice I need to finish this I only have today to do it in
SO there are obviously some issues, the first being
It’s unfinished
2. I don’t like the finish on this lineart, I was planning to do a similar style to my Whouffaldi in the Stars art in the sense of using the light brush feature to make the lineart glow setting myself up for a nice finish on business cards and prints
3. I don’t know if the lineart should be that distinct for the girl outline, or whether an Allura style would look better. I’m inclined to think Allura.
Anyway there’s two factors to fiddle with here, so here’s my process:
Transfer this to my iPad and start finishing it in procreate because while I could finish it in FireAlpaca I have way less range in terms of brushes and the UI is just not as intuitive, I have procreate memorised but it’s been two years since my first try on FireAlpaca I don’t have time to relearn a so so drawing program
In procreate I’m going to:
Fill in the dark blue background and fill in the silhouette figure with a very simple purple sunset looking gradient. Quite similar to the Allura art just a wee bit more developed because I do know how to layer and add some slight shadowing.
Then what I’m going to do is do a separate line art layer over the original and see how it looks with and without the line art
I will be live-blogging as I half panic my way through this because I haven’t used procreate in years either I’m VERY scared but also I do remember it better I hope :D

For the artist ask thingy. 1, 2, 8, 9, 14
Hello!! Sorry for the wait, I wanted to get home to access my pc for an old pic I wanted to share.
1.) What canon character(s) do you love to draw the most? (And why?)
Tech (isn't it obvious? 🤓). I cannot articulate why though. I just get a good feeling when I draw him. I think it has to do with the fact that he's my current fictional crush. However, I do enjoy drawing modern au version of him the most. Why? Even when I don't want to, I have a tendency to comply to canon sources as much as possible. In a modern au, that is not an issue and I have a lot more creative freedom, so that's why I like it. And also he's totally not maybe dead there so 🤷‍♀️😅 also why is he such a good looking model?
2.) What do you think makes your art iconic?
Last time I was active on tumblr, I think I was known for my use of very vibrant and saturated choice of colours. Also I used to highlight the lineart with fully saturated CMY colours. I’ve never seen anyone else do that at the time, so I think it was very recognisable. And since I really like you, I wanna share an old piece of art made in 2016 (looking through old art is embarrassing, but this was probably the peak of my fanart career tbh haha) ❤.
Tumblr media
As of right now though, I don’t feel like my art is iconic in any way. I don’t think I’ve drawn enough to have something recognisable going for me.
8. Are there artists that inspire you (and maybe shaped the way you draw your art)?
This is a hard one 😅 I completely stepped away from art during 2018, and when I returned I sort of just continued on with what I knew from before. But since it had been such a long time, I don’t remember what artists influenced me or shaped my art to make it like it is today. Rather than specific artists, I think I was more inspired by art styles, if that makes sense? I started with anime and manga, and then I tried to transition to a more semi-realistic style as I grew up. I was really into the art of my favourite games at the time, which were Overwatch and World of Warcraft. Also I think the art style of Arcane is so very lovely, I think I’d like to emulate it more in my current paintings.
9. How many drafts you have right now, be honest-
I am HONEST I don’t think I have too many drafts
The Band Batch x 2
Greasy mechanic!Tech
A special something about modern au Tech featuring a certain automobile 👀
Another Tech portrait in funky lighting.
Band au Crosshair (concept: he is smoking (hot))
A little self-indulgent Tech something to comfort my soul
I have a lot more ideas, but those have not made it to the canvas just yet.
14. Funniest thing that happened to you during the drawing process?
In recent time, maybe…that time I posted a sketch of Tech with an exposed neck and shoulders and the absolutely feral responses I got from the denizens of this site 😂 It happened on the art blog, and unfortunately I've deleted the post when I cleaned it up 😢
Thank you so much for sending these! They're good distractions on bad art days, you have no idea how much I appreciate it!!

Ghost Switch’s 4th Birthday~
Ahh... Another year down and we’re about 2/3rds done with the Snowdin arc! GOD I hope I finish within the next year, preferably before the end of 2022, but I can’t accurately guesstimate that far ahead.
I don’t really have a full color comic like I did that last two years, but I DO want to take a minute to appreciate my art improvement this last year, ESPECIALLY with Asgore. Geez, I remember having THE HARDEST time drawing his face 3 years ago in 2019 when he showed up in the first memory, but now??
Tumblr media
LOOK👏AT👏THAT👏GLOW UP!
Still no mustache but at this point there ain’t gonna be any on him in the comic. God, he looks so much more huggable now (and younger too!). And comparing the older pages side-by-side the newest ones, I just cannot fathom that I ever made my lineart so thin. Trying to do that now would be impossible for me. I like my lines THICK, if you know what I’m saying (what I am saying is that I just cannot set my brush size to anything less than 14 these days, and that’s only on the SMALL drawings. Big ones are a minimum of 20)
Looking over my art from the past year, have I learned anything new???
No. No, I don’t think so. Comic making is still fun, and I’ve gotten into a good rhythm of it~ Making 11 pages in the span of 3ish weeks was quite the challenge, though. It always feels so nice to have a big buffer, and not have to worry about falling behind on pages. It was rewarding and irritating that the third memory, which normally would have taken 2 MONTHS to tell got finished in 3 weeks. God, I wish I could keep up that pace for the rest of the snowdin arc, but that pace is just unsustainable for me in the long run.
SPEAKING OF THE THIRD MEMORY, I have a funny story to tell. For those unaware, I started scripting Ghost Switch in the middle of 2017 (exactly 1 year before the first page was posted, to be exact) and while I knew all the major story beats well before I started, some of the finer details, like minor characters, were still undecided even after I started making pages. One of those was to be Chara and Asriel’s private tutor.
Tumblr media
I was already kinda spit balling ideas on a partner for Gerson, since Gerson himself is recognizable in Undertale and thus the fandom. Though honestly, I didn’t really want to make up OCs to be paired with canon characters. (no shade to those who do, I just don’t feel like I could ever create a OC who has the same... “status”? or “importance”? as a canon character does when it comes to acceptance by the fandom at large, and nor do I even want to try)
A year in, and I still haden’t solved the “Partner for Gerson” problem, so imagine my delight when deltarune came out
Tumblr media
and I saw this beautiful man
Tumblr media
It was pure serendipity.
Tumblr media
Or so I thought.
And so, after learning about this new character named Alvin, I finalized my script and ignorantly went about my life, chewing away at this comic for the next 3 years.
Tumblr media
Ignorance really is bliss, but last year, while I was listening along to the 6th Undertale anniversary Deltarune Chapter 1 live stream in which the Dog himself was apart in, Toby dropped this bombshell on me that I had never deduced;
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I was a little upset by this.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Okay, maybe more than a little. I was absolutely furious at what this meant for me. And yes, I did see the drawing in the unused classroom that had alvin’s name on it. But honest to god, hand on heart, I thought it was a picture OF Alvin, and that the artist had titled it as such. It totally didn’t click to me that it was a drawing BY Alvin of his DAD. (And can you really blame me?? There weren’t too many identifiable features on that tiny square of pixels!)
But, hey, this is just Toby talking off the record. As long as the game itself didn’t confirm it, I was good, right? They could still be 2 unrelated gay turtle monsters in my comic, right?
Well, when I first played chapter 2, I didn’t really care much about what was happening in the dark world, but once I was back in the overworld, you know I bee-lined it to the church, hoping to find NOTHING honestly. But no. You talk to Alvin in the graveyard and he flat out confirms he’s Gerson’s son. There was canon evidence that they were related. I was devastated.
At a loss of what to do. My script was finalized for this memory, my dialogue typed, my dominoes set up. What was I to do? Should I alter some text? Or just keep it as is? Sure, what I have written down could be read as either platonically or romantically, but I don’t want people to think I’m implying things I’m not!
I JUST WANTED THE TURTLES TO BE GAY, NOT INCESTUOUS, DAMMIT!
In the end, I decided not to change very much. There was never any direct mention of what kind of relationship Gerson and Alvin had in my comic, and for all I care, they are not related in this story. I guess the joke’s on me for trying to take a “minor NPC” from an unfinished game and using him for my own ends. My, my, how god doth laugh at the sight of my suffering.
Thanks for reading my comic and continuing to stick around, guys. It really means a lot to me.

Holli’s Shiny New Commission Sheet
In all honesty, this sheet is temporary. I’m working on an actual updated sheet where I’ll redraw etoile miku and hopefully update my painted style as well, but my old sheet felt too disingenuous to leave pinned. My art has changed a lot since then. So here’s the temporary new sheet :)

Hey guys just letting you know - if you see my twf art on redbubble up for purchase, that isn’t me selling it. I don’t have a means of receiving any payment online and to date I never have, so there isn’t any way I could set up a means of selling my artwork whatsoever. Anyone selling my artwork is not to be trusted, and for the record, no, I do not and never would give someone else the go ahead to sell my own work. The only one I’d feel safe with selling my art is myself. The people selling my art on redbubble have not reached out to me in advance for permission to use my work and for all intents and purposes they are stealing my artwork and using it for their own profit. This revelation is extra upsetting to me because without a storefront to sell stuff on, there’s no official alternative I can offer to this. I cant receive compensation for this. I know art theft on redbubble is as common as seeing fish in the ocean but this stings a lot more considering my art gets stolen/used without credit all the time but at least then there’s the chance I can reach out to the person using my art to get them to either take it down or credit me. I cannot do such a thing in this case, and even if I could, I’m on vacation with my family and I don’t have the time to worry about this sort of stuff. So the most I can do is make you all aware of the different art styles and indicators of my art so you can spot people stealing my content more easier.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Style 1
vibrant/dulled vibrant colors (this can vary from piece to piece)
chunky, thick outlines
very angular and cartoonish
this is my main style as it’s easier to draw in
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Style 2
simplified, limited color palette
big cartoony eyes with smaller pupils that can often look exaggerated to push the expression of the drawing
softer more rounded body proportions, designs have a clear use of shape and are very simplified
thin-medium sized lines
shading and lineart often done in greys
warm tones
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Style 3
semi-realistic yet still cartoony proportions
shares a lot with style 2 (same color palette, warm tones, grey shading, has a “soft” look)
painterly, fully rendered, lineless style
lush expansive toned-down colors with lots of red typically included
dreamlike, surrealistic imagery
use of blockier shapes
This is nowhere near all the styles I use as I tend to switch things up a lot, these are just the styles whose pieces get a lot of notes (often in the thousands) and therefore have a higher risk of being stolen and used for profit without my knowledge.
Another thing you should note is that nearly all of my art contains a signature - it’s really simple, it’s just the first initial of my name, Jack, stylized as “J.” with a dot at the end. This is how you can tell that a piece was made by me.
Thankfully, it’s also something a lot of these resellers tend to forget to crop out.
Tumblr media
Idk how to end a post like this because i am not used to this type of situation happening to me. Again at the time of writing I’m on a vacation with my family so I don’t want to have to think about this, and I can’t really get involved anyway. So if you browse redbubble (and i’m not familiar with how redbubble works) I ask that if you see my work under a name that is not me, find a way to report it and get it removed.
Even if you’re not a fan of twf or you’re just a mutual of mine I encourage you to share this post around, as I’m a poor disabled nd trans artist and I need all the recognition and credit I can get from my work. Also instead of buying uncredited work you can just like….reblog my art instead? LOL i dunno. I just hope this situation gets resolved quickly as I’m so fucking tired of not getting credit for my work -_-

Back in October 2020, my good friend @tikki-tok (i.e @tikki-makes-art ) decided to start a Platinum playthrough together! We got into the Hall of Frame on March 12th, 2021, and after exploring some of the post game, we decided to follow my long standing tradition of drawing my team after beating a pokemon game, by collaborating on the art piece together. I did the sketch, Tikki did the lineart, I did the coloring, and then Tikki finished it off with the background and lighting effects!
We had tons of fun playing the game and coming up with this drawing, so now without further ado, some team info and playthrough commentary under the cut!
Team Tikki, in the order they were caught (Name, Species, Sex, Moveset):
“Paprika”, Infernape, ♀, Close Combat - Mach Punch - Fire Blast - Grass Knot
“Freya”, Staraptor, ♀, Close Combat - Return - Roost - Fly

General Playthrough Notes:
We played every Tuesday evening until we beat the game and explored as much as the post game as we could (I’ll get back to that in a moment) Which for me brings us to the in-game time of nearly 39 hours. I believe that Tikki’s in-game time was about ten hours more than mine because she spent a lot of time, among other things, actually doing honey tree shenanigans and catching extra pokemon (which had to be trained up).
Speaking of, the final team they used for the Elite Four was not all the pokemon used by Tikki during the playthrough! It was just the team that he felt was best suited for tackling the league with. Some other honorable mentions of teammates for her are: “Syrup” the Bibarel, “Titanium” the Heracross, “Majesty” the Vespiquen, and “Lancer” the Roselia.
Actually funny story, while Tikki was off using several pokemon at once and just switching the roster every now and again, I sat with a party of five for most of the game! I told myself I’d only use glaceon if I didn’t have a full team by then, because I love glaceon but you can only get it by the seventh gym, which in most instances would be way too late in the game to be adding new team members, but for me? I never found a different pokemon I wanted to round the team out, so Tempest got to come along after all!
Okay back to the post game, turns out Platinum’s post game is really weird?? You have to fill out the regional dex to access certain bits, which for a game that just seeing each pokemon fills out the dex slot, is reasonable, except that manaphy is part of that dex and you cannot see a manaphy in Platinum without trading or having Pokemon Rangers. Unless we were both missing something, we were forced to miss out on some of the cool bits of that whole northern island of Sinnoh.
When we fought the E4, we had trained both our teams up to at least level 45 (though half my team was at least level 50), which is still quite a bit low for Cynthia, but we made it work.
Tikki, however, tried going through the game without using healing items, and this extended to the E4. The E4 was so difficult for her with that rule that they had to reload the save and ditch the rule last minute.
Everyone in Sinnoh has ADHD. Sorry we don’t make the rules.
Because I was playing on an emulator and sometimes experienced lag, and Tikki was playing on an actual DS but sometimes knocked the cartridge out of place and had to reload saves, we started making the semi-joking headcanon that we were connected to space/Palkia and time/Dialga respectively, which then escalated to our rivals being connected to Arceus and Giratina.
Speaking of, because I was playing the female trainer and Tikki chose the male trainer, our Professor’s assistant rivals were swapped, so to make things easier in conversation, we started calling Lucas/Dawn “Sapling” instead.
Also! We came up with the headcanon that the in-game mother character, Johanna, kinda looks after trainers who are away from home and helps support them on their journey. Since she also gives you the costume outfits and I am not a fan of dresses but Tikki liked how the dress looked, we like to imagine that she meant to give me the suit and them the dress but accidentally gave me the dress and them the suit, so we just swapped.
Why were there so many npcs that talked about being starving while standing next to berry trees? Is this a Sinnoh thing? Why is no one eating?
The seventh gym was really funny because I just swept with Zest using earthquake, and due to a flinch on the steelix with the kings rock, I never saw a single one of the gym leader’s attacks. I finished it so fast, in fact, that Tikki hadn’t even started, so I just said “I’d give you advice on how to beat the gym but I didn’t even see what it had to offer”
All in all, we both had a really fun time and I would highly recommend the Platinum experience! The AI is the best I think it ever has been for pokemon so it even poses a good enough challenge on top of just being a really fun time.

Hey guys!
I’m opening up commissions! My hubby and I are kinda in a financial jam, so we’re needing some money to get by.
I’ll be limiting spots because of time. I work and also in the community theatre.
I’m limiting it to 8 spots. If it gets full, I’ll make a wait list. If spots fill up, I will be taking a break from doing commissions for a week after the 8th one is complete. I will update all my social media with the status of each commission.
My prices have increased since the last time I opened commissions. This is because I have more confidence in my skills than I did before.
Each price has been calculated and is based on an hourly wage. With ProCreate, I can see just how long it takes me to do a piece. (I’m bad at timing myself lol) You are buying my time, skills and finished product.
Sketch:

All SKETCHES need to be PAID UPFRONT. SIMPLE and DETAILED cam be paid half upfront and the rest when the sketch is approved. When coloring begins, major changes cannot be made. Please include all details and any major changes you want at the time of the Sketch Approval.
ALL SALES ARE FINAL.
*Note: If details are complex, there will be an additional 10% fee to the total price. IE: Complex tattoos, special embroidery on clothing, etc. If you realize a small detail was left out (IE: freckles, beautymark, scars, etc) please let me know! Those are easy fixes and I want to make sure you’re happy with your art.

Hi Chekhov! Really enjoying your white diamond au! I had a quick art question: How do you start comissions? I've been improving my drawing skills and thinking about drawing for others after having fun in artfight, but I don't know where to start? How much to charge, how to get paid, etc. Do you have any tips? Hope you're doing well! :)
Alright, since a few people have asked, I’ve decided to put together a few things about how to get started on commissions - what you need, what you should make, and how to keep things organized.
This will get a little long, so I’ll divide it into 4 main sections:
1) Draw Art - Getting started
2) Get Commissioned - Making a commission sheet, Advertising
3) ??? - Communicating, Setting Limits, Running the Business
4) Profit - Pricing Yourself and Getting Paid
* Disclaimer: I’m an artist, so this How-To will be illustration-focused. I’m sure many of these tips can apply to ANY types of commissions, but I will be focusing on the type I know best. If you are proficient in other types of commissions for other types of art - music commissions, photography, etc - feel free to chime in and leave a comment or make your own tutorial!
Tumblr media
1) Draw Art
I think this is probably the most obvious part, but it needs to be said:
Before you start making art for other people, you must first be comfortable making art in general.
I’m not saying your art has to be Disney-quality, or industry-level! Not at all.
BUT! You must be comfortable creating what you sell. If you try to sell something you have little confidence in, you will stress yourself out and possibly end up losing time AND money.
Don’t shoot for the moon if you haven’t landed on it even once. Sell what you know you’re good at. Your commissions don’t HAVE to include full-body illustrations if you don’t know how to draw feet/solid stances. Limit yourself to what you can do.
Things you need to should probably have before starting commissions:
1. Access to art materials or a fully downloaded art program
DO NOT - Use a free tutorial version that will expire in a month and leave you without a way to draw! If you are having trouble finding a program, try free ones like MediBang Paint Pro.
2. Free time to complete the amount of commissions you want to take.
DO NOT - Take on or offer commissions if you KNOW you’re going to be overwhelmed with school or personal life for the next 2+ months. Pace yourself, otherwise you’ll burn out, get stressed, and get discouraged.
3. A reliable way to communicate with your customers like a commissions-only email
DO NOT - Use your friend/family/college email. It’s hard to keep track of things as it is, and creating new emails is easy and free. And keep it professional if you can! Not many people will reach out to dong-wiggles20434 to ask for a design. Ideally, your email should be close to your brand - however you want to brand yourself. Usernames are fine!)
DO NOT - Use Instagram/Twitter/Tumblr to collect commission info unless you are ready to do the organizing yourself. Some people make it work, but in my experience, if you use these SNS sites to communicate with friends and network... you’re going to be losing commission inquiries right and left and accidentally ignoring people. Email is much easier to organize and sort into folders.
4. A portfolio or at least 2-3 pieces of each type of art you’re planning to sell.
DO NOT - Advertise commissions without having any examples of the art you plan to sell. People will find it difficult to trust you if you can’t even give them a vague idea of what sort of drawing they’ll be getting.
Disclaimer: These are not hard ‘do not’s. If you have had a different experience, I respect that. I’m simplifying for the sake of streamlining this advice.
.
2) Get Commissioned
So - you have your art, you have your art program, and youve got all the time in the world. That means.... that’s right! It’s time to let the world know you’re taking commissions.
One of the most common ways artists signal to their audience that they can do commissions is by creating a commissions sheet. There are MANY ways to make this - and they range from simple and doodly ones to VERY complex designs. For example, here’s mine!
There are many ways to organize a commission sheet. At its core, a commission sheet should display the types of art you WANT to be commissioned to make. Let’s go over a few ways they can be done!
Tumblr media
#1.... Body Portion Dividers!
Tumblr media
This sheet is most common with those who want to capitalize on drawing people and characters. If you want to draw lots of characters, this is a great way to offer several tiers of pricing based on how much of their character your customers want to see.
#2... Complexity Scale
Tumblr media
If you’re open to drawing many things but want to base your pricing off of how complex something is, you can split your tiers into done-ness. This type of commission is popular with those that draw characters AND animals, furries, etc.
#3....  Style and Type
Tumblr media
If you’re more on the design side of things, or if you have various niche art styles that you can’t quite lump together, display a variety of your skills alongside each other! It helps if all the ones you have can be organized under a common customer - like those looking to advance their own business and get logos, websites, or mascots made for them!
.
3) ???
You got your first commission... what happens now???
Well, ideally you have the time, tools and motivation to make things happen! Now all you have to do is... sit down and... draw.......
I’m going to say something that may be a little controversial:
Commissions aren’t fun.
No, no, hear me out: I have fun doing commissions! I genuinely enjoy drawing characters and coming up with designs. But even with all that said, commissions are, first and foremost: WORK
I’m not saying this to discourage you, I’m saying this to keep things realistic. When I first began commissions, I thought it would be just like any other type of drawing. I would sit down, imagine a thing, draw it... it would be fun!
But then I realized that I couldn’t just draw what I wanted - another person had an idea in mind and had asked me to do it. I stressed over getting the design correct from descriptions. I stressed over not having the right reference for the pose the commissioner wanted. I stressed over not being able to draw the leg right in the way I had promised I would do. I stressed about billing. I stressed about digital money transfers. It was difficult, and time-consuming, and I did not enjoy it. At all.
Tumblr media
And a part of that is definitely on the commissioner - we, as artists, NEED to demand proper references or descriptions. We, as artists, NEED to limit the amount of changes we’re going to make at the flick of a finger. We NEED to demand clear instructions and set boundaries. That’s also super important.
But also - don’t be discouraged if you find yourself exhausted drawing your first commission. MANY artists go through this. Adjust your rules, fix up your limits, practice putting your foot down on finicky commissioners who expect you to read their mind! It does get easier, but you have to communicate and put in the effort and act as your own manager AND your own customer service AND your own accountant. That’s what you’re looking at.
Good limits and boundaries to set:
Limit the amount of changes a person can ask to make. “I want blue hair.” Next email: “No wait, yeah, make it red.” Next email: “Actually I changed my mind, can I get the blue but like, lighter?” Next email: “No, not that light.” ... At some point, we have to stop. I personally allow 2-3 changes on the final stages of a commission before I start refusing or start asking for extra money.
Demand clear instructions and/or references. If something isn’t described, you have to take artistic liberty and design it, but that’s difficult! And if the customer is not happy with it but can’t tell you more? That’s not your problem - the burden of reference is on THEM. You cannot read their mind, and that’s not your fault.
Get at least half the payment up front! This is a good balance between the ‘pay before art’ and the ‘pay after art’ conundrum that will limit the amount of woes between artist and customer. (I’ll touch upon this a little more in the Profit section.)
Organization:
Where possible, create good habits! Tag your emails and organize your folders. I have a tag on my emails for active and finished commissions. I also keep my emails on Unread until I have time to sit down and properly look at/reply to them.
My Commissions in the folder are also organized chronologically and I mark down which ones are paid and which ones are not.
Tumblr media
(I understand not everyone can do this, but if you want to give it a try, it does make things easier in the long run. Again, this advice is just what I have found personally helps.)
One last thing - I do not want to shame ANYONE for taking their time with commissions! Commissions are complex, and they take time and work. You can draw in 8 hours, but some things take research, materials, etc. Some illustrations realistically take up to half a year, or, depending on what’s involved, several years!!
THAT BEING SAID - it’s good manners to be upfront with your customers about how long you expect the commission to take. If you think you’re busy, just say that! Explain that you have a lot going on, and you will probably take (insert time period here).
And if your commissioners are worried, work out a system to keep them updated! I send my commissioners updates when I finish the lineart/flat colors/etc and I try to be clear about how long everything will take. I try to estimate with a +3-5 days buffer to give myself extra time... and recently I’ve been using it. Always say a bigger number than you think you’ll need.
If someone wants a rushed commission... make them pay more. If ANYONE wants a commission done ‘by the end of the week’ - that’s an automatic rush-job for me because I’m juggling an irl job and several commissions at once. I WILL charge a rush fee and I won’t feel bad about it.
If someone wants a commission within 24 hours...... Well, they better be paying you 3x your normal amount, or more. And remember - you CAN refuse! It’s perfectly reasonable to say ‘No, sorry, that sort of turnaround time is not realistic for me.’
Food For Thought - Invoicing
Many artists I’ve commissioned in the past have not used Invoicing, but I’ve recently begun to fill out invoices and file them in my Commissions folder just to keep track of things. It’s not necessary until you start getting into the Small Business side of Freelancing, but it’s not a bad idea to get into the habit early in case you might need to do it later for tax purposes.
Here’s what my Invoice looks like, for example.
Tumblr media
I’ve optimized it to help me remember who, what, and how much is involved! It also contains important info for my customers like where to send the money.
Which brings us to...
.
4) Profit
One of the hardest things for artists is pricing themselves. I’m not going to tell you which way is BEST - there is no BEST way, only the best way for YOU.
One of the options available to you is pricing by the hour. It includes averaging out how long it takes you to draw a specific type of art (whatever you’re offering as a commission) and multiplying that by an hourly wage you’ve decided on.
Tumblr media
When you do this, I stress - do NOT price yourself below minimum wage if you can help it. When you first start out, aim for the $15/hour mark and adjust accordingly.
Other ways to price your art:
- Per complexity: Portraits vs full body should be scaled based on how difficult you find one vs. the other. You can also easily decide on a price for a sketch and double it for lineart, triple it for full color, etc.
- Per type: Look up for industry prices for website design and logo design. They may surprise you! You don’t have to charge that much, but it helps to keep things in perspective.
It’s okay to change your prices! Keep your commission sheet image handy so you can update the amounts as you grow. :)
Payment up front or after completion?
Some artist take full payment up front. Some only demand payment after they’ve finished and sent out the piece. I personally think these are both risky for everyone involved.
I recommend doing at least HALF of the payment BEFORE you start the commission. Calculate your full price and ask for half before you start working on it in earnest, to make sure the person can actually pay you. Then, when they receive the full piece and are satisfied, they can complete the payment.
I personally work in this structure:
> Someone emails me with their idea/reference
> I send back a rough draft sketch that shows the idea/pose (only takes me 10-20 minutes so not a huge loss if they ghost) and quote them a price
> They can pay the full thing upfront OR pay half
> I finish the commission and send updates when I do the lineart/colors to double check anything so they have multiple chances to spot any errors
> If the person paid only half on completion, I send them a low-res version of the finished thing, they finish up their payment and THEN I send them the full-res version plus any other filetypes/CYMK proofs, etc.
Many of the people who commission me pay me up front even though I offer they pay half - and I’m really flattered that they trust me that much! Because of that, I feel encouraged to update them frequently and ask for their input as I work, so they have the peace of mind knowing I’m actually doing their commission.
Great, but how do I get PAID????
There are NUMEROUS ways - these days money is relatively easy to transfer over digital means, and you have a few options.
Tumblr media
Paypal is perhaps one of the oldest digital wallets and is geared towards businesses. By setting up a PayPal and connecting it to your debit card of bank account, you can tunnel a pathway from your online business directly into your hands in a matter of days.
Paypal also offers Invoicing - you make an invoice, price it and send it to the person’s email and they can pay whatever way they need! (It also allows partial payments.)
Pros: transfers from PayPal to bank account are free, and take a couple of business days. It also has no upper limit to the amount of money you can move in/out each month. It can force refunds due to the nature of its business-oriented payment system.
Cons: Because it’s used by businesses for larger transactions, PayPal may demand a more rigorous proof of your identity. It may also take longer to set up and be harder to get used to. I’ve also heard that they can be a hassle when it comes to closing your account.
Tumblr media
Venmo is another type of digital wallet that acts much like paypal, except for a few key differences - it is NOT made for businesses (so depending on whether you’re officially registered as a freelancer, you may not be able to use it). I personally don’t use venmo, so I cannot speak to its usefulness, but I know a few people that use it for casual transactions. It’s easy and quick! :)
Keep in mind that you cannot force a refund over venmo! The transactions are final.
There’s also CashApp, GooglePay (which could load gift cards but also allows peer-to-peer transactions) and I’ve heard good things about Due, though I’ve never personally used it.
Other ways to pay: I’ve had people pay me over Patreon by upping their pledge, and I’ve had people pay me over Ko-Fi by donating a specific amount.
Many people even use Etsy - the website specialized for independent small businesses selling art - by listing their commission sheet and offering up several ‘slots’ of commissions, which allows you to track taxes AND allows your clients to pay using whatever they feel comfortable with.
If you’re in Canada, you can even pay by emailing money directly from bank account to bank account - check whether your country offers this type of service! There’s no shortage of ways to move money in the digital world.
Just like everything else, there’s no singular ‘Best’ way. It just depends on what works for you.
I think that just about wraps it up! I can’t quite think of what else to put here - but I’m sure other artists will chime in with their own advice. :) I’m very sorry this became so long but I hope it was helpful!
Obligatory Disclaimer: I’m not qualified to give legal or accounting counsel. Please double-check the laws in your own country/state in regards to taxation of freelancing work and do your own research. If you are underage, DEFINITELY get an adult’s permission before you start doing commissions, and have the adult help you through the process.

Just asking to make sure this isn’t a problem. You know about the Spanish translation of your comic on tapas right? By Akazytto_XOX? I don’t know if this was permitted by you or not so I wanted to bring this to your attention
There are several people who post the translations on Tapas, and yep, I’m fine with it. :)
While we’re here, I just want to make a quick note about what is OK and what isn’t:
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Things I’m ok with in general:
- translating the comic and posting it elsewhere (blog, facebook, etc) as long as there is visible credit/links back to the original comic on tapas!
- dubbing the comic on YouTube as long as there is visible credit in the video itself, NOT only in the description
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Things I’m not ok with:
- Dubbing the comic for your YouTube channel and not crediting me in the video
- Reposting the comic on other sites (IG, Amino, etc) and not even bothering to give a link back to the comic - if you want to share the comic with your friends, just post a teaser panel or a part of it and ADD A LINK TO TAPAS. There is absolutely no good reason for you to repost every single panel of the comic and then go ‘credit to chekov :)’ because 1) no one will know who I am without a link and 2) no one will care about following the link if you’re reposting the whole dang thing
- Using my art for your fics without crediting me (If you are writing fanfics for the AU, that’s fine, but like... if you’re using comic art in your fanfic at least credit me somewhere... please.)
- Using my art to trace and make your own art without explicitly saying you traced*
This is a big one and I see it often. I think there’s this weird back and forth in the art world on tracing so many people don’t know the etiquette.
Here’s my take:
Tracing is FINE to do! If you are trying to learn how to draw, if you want to practice lineart, get a feel for shapes, if you’re uncertain you can do it properly - that’s okay! Go ahead and trace from another drawing! It helps you learn.
BUT.
YOU GOTTA MAKE IT CLEAR IN YOUR POST THAT YOU TRACED. Put a note, say ‘I traced the base for this from @_______.’ You cannot just slap your traced art down on tumblr and go ‘I made this :)’ and hope no one notices, because they WILL. I see art traced from mine all the time and 90% of the time, none of the kids doing it will even mention that it’s explicitly traced from other drawings.
Even better: if you can, ASK THE ARTIST if you can post the traced art FIRST before just going for it. It’s the polite thing to do!
Thanks friends!

CALLING ALL TOLKIEN FAN ARTISTS!
There are just under 10 days left to sign up for 2021’s Tolkien Reverse Summer Bang.  We’ve got some great submissions already but it would be wonderful if more of you could join us - the more artwork, the better!
I’d like to take part but I’ll never get anything finished in 10 days...
It doesn’t have to be finished - art drafts are due at 23.59 CET on 14 May, and the draft just needs to give a good idea of what the final piece will look like.  Lineart which will have colour added later is fine, or you could submit a concept drawing of something that you will work on through the summer - a costume or an embroidery piece, for example.  TRSB veteran @lidoshka made a handy reference post here.
Unless you decide that you want to be completely hands off in your partnership with your author, you have until 1st August to finish your art.
I’m not sure my art is eligible.
It probably is!  We only turn down art for the following reasons:
1) It is so incomplete that you can’t get any idea what the finished piece will be like (e.g. it’s at the lines and blobs stage - a nice sketch, for example, would be fine, or a manip that’s still a little rough at the edges).
2) It doesn’t demonstrate sufficient original input (e.g. it’s screenshotted directly from a game with no transformative elements applied).
3) The piece(s) submitted have previously been published elsewhere (e.g. they’re already on DeviantArt).
We accept all kinds of artworks.  In the past we’ve had sculpture and crafts as well as drawings, paintings, comic strips, moodboards, edits and digital manipulations - and this year we have cosplay and print block cutting in the mix as well.  It would be great to broaden that out even further.  (Calligraphy?  Pyrography? Video?)
I’ve never done anything like this before! / I’m usually a writer and I’ve never published my art!  I’m nervous!
You’re not on your own - every year we have a lot of first timers as well as plenty of experienced participants.  The mods will happily answer any questions you have; our FAQ section gives a fairly comprehensive run-down of the event, but if something isn’t clear, please just ask!
What if nobody wants to claim my art?
We cannot absolutely promise that every artwork will find a loving home with one of our authors, but rest assured that demand on claims night is always extremely high - Mod Narya is still scarred by Year 1, when we had 24 claims in under two minutes!  And it isn’t always the obvious characters and pairings that get snapped up first…
In the event that there is more art than claiming authors, we will run second claims.  We also have an excellent team of pinch hitters and treat makers, and will do our very best to find someone to write for your creative efforts.
I only know/like the films.  Is this an event for the books?
No!  We like movieverse too.
Do I have to help the author with the story?  I don’t think I can do that!
That’s OK!  We have a range of collaboration levels that you select from when you submit your art, including low-commitment options (though we do ask that you are responsive to your author and reply to any questions within 48 hours, unless you have told them in advance that you’re going to be unavailable for a period of time). See the FAQs for more detail.
How many pieces can I submit?
Up to 3 pieces, for claiming by three separate authors.
OK, I’m in.  What next?
The artist signup form is over here - once we have your signup, we will send you a confirmation email welcoming you to the event (this can take up to 48 hours depending on mod availability).  We can’t wait to see your beautiful creations!

COMMISSION SHEET
Hey guys, here to announce I finally have a commission sheet worked out! I’ll be pinning this post so it’s easily visible, so keep an eye out for what the title says when it comes to whether or not they’re open!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This isn’t really a common way of doing commissions so I’ll explain:
The way this works is basically you can pick from one of the three types listed: bust, halfbody, and fullbody. These types have base costs attached- they’re essentially the costs of the foundation of the commission, which you build on top of with the addons listed in the second page. These addons are interchangeable; what you would like is totally up to you. For example, if you want lines and shading but no flat colors, that’s possible. If you want a sketch finish with flats and a scene, that’s possible. Anything at all, it’s all a la carte! The grand total will be the base cost of the type plus the costs of whatever addons you are getting!
BASE PRICES FOR TYPES:
Bust Shot - $5
Halfbody - $10
Fullbody - $15
ADDON PRICES: Finishes:
Sketch - $5
Lineart - $10
Coloring:
Flats - $5
Shading - $5
Scene (Background + Scenic shading and lighting) - $10
Additional Characters - 25% of the total cost per character.
DO’S:

Free UT/DR art requests!
Tumblr media
Free undertale/deltarune drawing requests! I will check your profile to make sure you don’t breach our DNI. If you do, your request will be ignored, and you will be blocked.
See my art for examples of what you’ll be getting. By no means will the art I give be perfect, but I’ll try my best to make sure it doesn’t have too many flaws. Let me know if you want it to be lineart, colored, doodled, sketched, shaded, transparent or not, background or not, etc.
Just comment below your request or send us a message, and I’ll do my best!
No payment is involved. The rules are under the line.
(Our headmate Angel is the only one drawing these requests. They are the one who's in charge of drawing the Defining Happiness comic, as well as the other pieces featured above. Any use of "I" in the rules listed below is Angel referring to themself. Any reference of "we" is referring to our system as a whole.)
----------------------------------------------
No pedophilia (this includes Frans, Chans, Papyra, Papyrisk, etc. Unless, of course, its onesided where the kid has a crush on the adult, since that does happen.)
No incest. Chasriel, Charisk, and Friskriel don’t count as incest, since we view them as sort of an Eren-Mikasa situation, where the parents took in the humans, but the humans don’t view Asriel as a brother. Kris is a different case, since they openly refer to Asriel as their brother, so that would count as incest. This also includes multidimensional incest, like honeymustard (sorry, makes us uncomfortable.)
No fetish art. Sorry, I just wouldn’t be good at it, and it makes us a bit uncomfy (your fetishes are valid though!)
“Evil Chara” art will only be allowed if it’s the Genocide route, where they were corrupted by LOVE. We don’t like the “Chara is heartless and made Frisk do genocide” concept. I won’t draw that.
NSFW art is allowed. I will draw sex, drug-use, alcohol, smoking, gore, and even some kinks (like bondage.) However, I won’t draw NSFW art of teenagers or kids, unless its of them as grownups (ie: Frisk and Chara making out after getting married.) Kids obviously don’t stay kids forever. I’ll even go as far as to draw suicide and self-harm, though it will be matured and given a TW. I won’t romanticize it or sexualize it, due to it being serious, so don’t ask for that.
I’ll draw headcanons you have. Headcanoned genders, sexualities, amory/gamy, disorders, disablities, illnesses, neurodivergence, religions, etc.
I’ll draw ships, even ones we don’t personally ship, so long as its between monsters of the same age-range. We think plenty of ships are cute, even if we don’t actively ship them (like salphys, for example.)
I won’t draw ocs unless they are ship fanchildren. Sorry, just not really something that interests us.
I’ll draw for AUs except Underlust, Caretaker of the Ruins, or AUs with Evil Chara (unless they were de-moralized due to LOVE.) Those make us uncomfortable for personal reasons, but its valid if you enjoy those aus.
You can use the art I made for you as a profile picture or background. You cannot, however, repost it anywhere or claim it. If we discover you have breached this rule, we will report you for art thievery, block you, and announce on our profile that you are an art thief so that others may avoid you.
