Ficlet time for the No Gem Roads AU! AU by @vinylroadsjunction This time about…
Leschenaultia or otherwise known as “First Love’s Grass” in Japanese!
Leschenaultia: Yinu and her family
(Note: Mama and Papa’s personalities… are… wildly HCs here...)
Without further ado, enjoy!
It is evening. The moon shines down on you as you make your way home. Alone, not that you ever minded the existential dread that comes with it. No matter how many times you come to the view of the Natura district, it is spectacular. The paved roads, the splendid houses, the fountains, the flower shops... you could go on!
If it weren't for the explosions that occurred just a few hours ago. The paved road was slightly damaged, with cracks all over. One fountain was leaking, water trickling down the basin. Must get Timmy to help you fix everything, you note.
It is already rumored to be the fault of the new-fangled Rock duo, Bunk Bed Junciton. You never had an affinity for rock, but you appreciated how much sheer energy they brought to Vinyl City.
Then you notice a child that will change your life.
You realize the child is lost. All dirty. With scrapes all over their body. And without their parent. In the middle of the city.
But most of all, you know that look in a child's eyes. That red, messy sobby eyes.
You are a busy man. You understand that. Still, you bend down to greet the child.
"Do you need any help?"
The child, wearing strange blue robes, flinches. Then she dashes away.
"No no! I will not hurt you!" Although running after a child who is clearly afraid of you is illogical, you do so anyways.
Pitter patter!
After running down the hill marked with buildings oh so familiar to you, the tiny footsteps come to a halt.
The glowing light makes the child glow in almost an angelic manner.
"Please... I need help! I'm lost... and I need my Red Coral!"
The child's already large eyes widen, desperate for any sort of kindness. Hopefully.
"Who is this 'Red Coral?'" People nowadays have such strange names. Not that you mind, of course.
The child gasps and covers their mouth as if they'd said something wrong. But their eyes go back to a neutral state as they continued.
"Red Coral and I came here for an important job. I can't tell you what it is but- we lost. And now Red- Red Coral is gone!"
Whoever this Red Coral is, that person is quite important to this child. Which only means-
“I will help you find them. Can you tell me what they look like?”
"Ummm... tall. Golden eyes. Gem on the back of her head. Long hair head. A dress! Blue like mine!"
Gem? Like the gem monsters that surround this city? But if she is... sentient like the child in front of you, how?
"Let's set off. Take my hand. You might get lost."
The child hesitates for a split second but listens. You feel the small hand, cold, in yours. Making sure you don't accidentally squish it, you hold it tenderly.
"Now... where could she be?"
The artificial lights of the district brighten the road you two walk on. It casts a shadow of two people. One tall, one short. Just like a father and his child. No. This child will find this Red Coral, and they'd leave. Like they always do.
You were passing by the flower shop when they gasped.
"Did you spot her?"
"No... but I found something! Are those- flowers? Actual flowers?"
This child is surprised about seeing flowers. Not to be judgemental... but how odd.
"Yes. They are roses. Do you want some?"
"May I?"
You walk to the cashier and ask for the yellow and red rose bouquet. Adorned with blue flowers on the sides. He happily places the beautiful thing on the other hand once you pay and tips him.
"Always come back! Maybe this time bring someone... important, okay?" He flashed a cheeky grin.
"I'm not looking for dates! I'm going to give it to this child!" you tell him as you give the flower bouquet to the child.
"I'll gift you these."
The child lets out a smile, for the first time. It looks precious. Especially the way she had dimples. Then the smile faded.
"I can have them? But I didn't deserve this... I haven't done anything to do so."
"People always deserve flowers. Especially for those who are feeling...blue." You say, pointing at the child's outfit.
It earned you another small smile, so it's worth it.
You wave goodbye to the flower shop employee. As you walk hand in hand, you meet Amal.
Like always, he was on all fours, while wearing his blue unicorn outfit.
"Amal... I know you are a unicorn right now, but we need help. Have you seen a woman in a blue dress, with golden eyes, and-"
"Red." The child cuts in while still admiring the bouquet.
"..."
"Amal, please. No horsing around now!" You said another pun.
"Yeah. I kinda think she went to Metro Division. Looked like she was really searching for something."
"That's her! Thank you, Amal!" The child suddenly perked up.
You had to get there fast. Metro Division was much larger and more... chaotic than here, so it would take much.
"Is it okay if I pick you up? A piggyback?"
"What's that?" This child also doesn't understand piggybacks.
"It is when a person picks up another person... and puts them on their shoulder!"
The child let out an excited breath but flinched again. "I'm not that high ranking!" Even more strange words.
"You are my first priority now! Besides, we must get you to the Divison."
"... okay."
Your back may hurt for a while, but this was worth it.
You pick the child up. Surprisingly light.
As you feel the breeze run through your hair, you run past that flower shop, across the bridge, and enter the bask of the bright Neon lights of Metro Division. Not as bright as before, but still. Quite fancy.
Then you spot her.
As the child (wonder what their name is) suddenly yells for her, she looks back. The broken carousel makes a stark contrast between her blue dress.
Red Coral has sparkling golden eyes. The world glimmers in those eyes as she lunges toward you and the child.
"DID YOU KIDNAP MY GOLDEN CORAL? WHAT DID YOU DO TO HER!"
Her eyes pierce through you.
She had a beautiful voice, too.
The child jumps down from your shoulder and stands between you and her, arms wide open as if to protect you.
"No! Red, he helped me find you! He- gave me this, too."
The child, no, Golden Coral, hands Red the bouquet.
"What?" Now with an astonished look, she gingerly takes the bouquet. She turns it around and examines it.
"Actual flowers?" Once again, an odd response.
"Yes!"
Her look melts, as she kneels down to meet your gaze.
"I am deeply sorry for my past words. And I must thank you for helping me unite with my protege." Now she looked mortified by her past action, eyes glistening.
You let out an assuring smile. "No worries! I would be scared too if I was lost in another place and separated from my family! Do you have a place to stay?"
"... no."
"If so, I can invite you to my house. We have more flowers. And a roof over our heads."
Golden Coral tugs at Red's skirt. "We can see more flowers? We should go, Red!"
Red Coral lets out the sweetest smile known to humankind. "If you insist. Then I must accept such an offer."
Whatever happens with these two from now on, you were going to be involved too. And something told you, it was going to be big.
But this was going to be a good big change.
The Neon lights shined down on you and the Corals. It made the two look as if they were glowing more under it.
You take a deep breath. Time to introduce yourself to them. "Nice to meet you. My name is-"

Reading you say you just don't feel like writing fanfic anymore made me sad, because I've felt the same for years. Even shows I really did like just.. Arent inspiring? I watch things and enjoy them, but I don't feel any desire to produce something from it, and I no longer even look for fanfic that much. I felt the grief, too, so in a way, I'm glad it's not just me :/ It's a sucky feeling, really.
I hate it, honestly. I haven't closed the door to it, in weird ways it feels like the door has been closed on me instead (because of the pandemic, and life, and fandom changes).
I'm definitely not ruling it out! I'm also just not sure when things will change.
And then additionally, I've been in a 6 month lockdown that shows no signs of changing because I'm immunocompromised and disabled and everyone else is living kind of selfishly as though people like me don't exist and don't deserve protection (specifically re: masks and mask-wearing). Protecting disabled people really stops at mask wearing, even though folks wearing a mask does less protection for you and more protection for the *people around you* and vice versa. I've gone to a cafe once this year. I've been inside a shop once. It's kind of hard to get that old enthusiastic fandom vibe personally.
I think it will change eventually re: fandom because the media landscape is changing all the time, and nothing is static anyway. Things feel like they may have changed forever, but the reality is it's only been about 2 years out of about 13 of writing fanfiction?
But yeah I also no longer look for fanfic that much. It's harder than it used to be. People used to joke about looking for needle in haystacks but the reality is with AO3 and tag-surfing/narrowing/limiting it was, at least for a while, a lot easier to find fics you liked. These days it feels like...idk...
Also just factually, there's less longfics then there used to be. I talked to a friend about this and we both agreed it's probably connected to how short-lived fandoms are these days. A lot of the time it can take time to come up with a longfic concept, and it can be even harder to execute it in a dead or quiet fandom. I am primarily a hurt/comfort + happy ending longfic reader, and a PWP reader. There are still a lot of PWPs, but I've found no longfics I've really enjoyed in about 2 years. At some point, I just...gave up. I'm sure they're out there, but not really in the fandoms I was last active in, and not with the pairings I was looking for. And by the time I thought 'I'll write a rarepair longfic' the fandom was dead and I think every fic writer can write for a dead fandom a few times, but not many can do it forever. Even the last fanfiction I wrote was way way shorter than my normal ones, almost as though even then I was afraid to commit to anything longer than around 20k.
Anyway! Yes. It does suck and it is sad and it's kind of depressing. I'm very lucky that I can still get 'fandom feels' with Fae Tales, which has helped. But my writing life doesn't really feel complete without fanfiction, so it's been a weird two years. Falling Falling Stars came close to filling that gap because it's so whumpy and hurt/comforty, but that's going to be over soon.
Be interesting to see what happens to fandom during the pandemic/s (1 million cases of monkeypox now predicted by September). And hopefully you find your way back to fandom eventually, or that many of us do. You're definitely not alone. I know so many people kind of deep in this issue (many of them previously longfic writers), and while I do know a few people still writing fic, the 'old guard' of writers who actually still kind of want to be writing, or in fandom, or feeling that feeling, just...can't.
I don't think it's 'growing out of fandom' personally. For me, I really think it's connected to the change in the fandom experience + global issues + personal issues. So I am hopeful it's not permanent. But still sad that I can't tell people when I'll be writing fic again any time soon either. x.x

I love rune factory 1 and rune factory 2 so much but it’s such a shame that the fanbase for those two games are so small compared to the ones for 4 and 5 (and rf is a niche game series anyways!) wish there were more art and fanfics …

Kiss prompts! What about Doug/Dylas and #22 if you ship them.
50 TYPES OF KISSES! SEND IN A NUMBER AND A PAIRING (accepting!) 22. A kiss that is leading to more, but is interrupted by a third party A/N: Hello I am absolutely EONS late to this (like, YEARS?) but this got lost in my inbox somehow and it just completely slipped my memory. I am exceedingly sorry about that. Anyway, DylDoug is one of my biggest ships, and so I simply must try my hand at this.
There's laughter between them as they kiss.
It seeps into Dylas's clothes, his skin, his bones. It bubbles up from his lungs, or maybe from Doug's lungs, he's not completely sure. But it sits there, hovering, around their lips, their fondly crinkled eyes, their surreptitious crawl towards the staircase.
There's a party in the restaurant beneath them, all of Selphia gathered in festivities as the months have grown colder, and the new year draws closer-- it's mere minutes away now, probably barely even ten minutes, but at some point Doug had gotten a mischievous look in his eye. He had grabbed Dylas by the hand, asking for help with something upstairs (clearly as an excuse, even someone as socially-inept as Dylas could tell, though thankfully most of the people around them were too drunk to either notice or care), and pulled him towards the stairs.
Dylas couldn't refuse that bright smile, those twinkling silver eyes, even if he wanted to. Which he doesn't.
He particularly doesn't, now that they've made just over halfway up the steps, far enough that they're out of sight from the restaurant's crowd.
"What are we--" Dylas asks, but Doug cuts him off by turning around from where he stands two steps above him (making them near-equal height), dropping their joined hands, and instead grabbing Dylas's cheeks to pull him into a kiss.
A noise of surprise falls out from between Dylas's lips, until it turns into one of pleasure. He wraps his arms around Doug's waist, enjoying the rough feeling of the dwarf's coat texture beneath his palms as well as the lithe form of his back underneath.
The party noises in the background fade away-- the cheering, the chattering, none of it compares to the heartbeat roaring in Dylas's ears, to the warm of Doug's lips above him (above him, that is a weird feeling he's not used to, though also not opposed to), the callused skin of Doug's hands against him.
Doug pulls away, a bright flush to his cheeks and a happy look in his eyes. "You were looking a little tired. Thought I'd rescue you."
"My knight in shining armor," Dylas deadpans, though he knows the smile on his lips and the roll of his eyes are nothing but dripping with fondness. He can't help it, the way their love seeps into everything in his life, how it's turned everything he's ever known inside out like a purse full of change, and made everything better.
"Yeah yeah, I know," Doug replies, with a similarly fond roll of his own eyes. "I'm so brave. So gallant. Truly, you owe me a life debt."
"How'm'I gonna make it up t'you?" Dylas murmurs, lips hovering towards Doug's again, pulled in like gravity.
"I can think of a few ways..."
They kiss again, nearly feverish this time, and for a second their teeth clack together but it just makes them laugh again, makes them readjust the angle and go in further, stronger. Doug slips his hands below the collar of Dylas's coat (or at least as far as he can go, stupid layers) and the contact is electric.
Their kiss only gets deeper, Dylas pushing forward until he climbs up one more step, which in turn makes Doug stumble slightly and also climb up one step, determined not to give up the height advantage (competitive bastard, Dylas thinks, deeply in love with the man). Doug pulls back, panting, an excited edge to his rounded out eyes.
"Wanna... your room? No one there, we have..." he pulls Dylas's arm out from where it's wrapped around his waist, checks the watch there, then grins. "Eight minutes. Well, Seven minutes and 59 seconds, if we want to be there when the clock hits."
Dylas can't help but scoff, feeling the challenge seep into his voice. "You think eight minutes is enough time?"
Face turning an absolutely beautiful shade of red, Doug gapes at him, managing to look both competitive and horny at once. Then he grins, face still mere inches away from Dylas's, and is about to open his mouth to say some retort when they hear a voice loudly ring out from below them.
"Hey, where's Doug? Doug! We're starting an arm wrestling contest!" Kiel's voice calls, and from the sounds of it it seems like a large group of people are moving towards the staircase, very quickly.
Doug and Dylas-- with one last shared look of fondness and 'what can you do?' disappointment shared between them-- move apart from each other.
Dylas lets Doug scooch past him on the stairs, so that he can take them two at a time and meet the others at the landing just as they get there.
"Sorry!" Dylas can hear Doug say with a grin, even if he can't see it from this angle. "Dylas said he had some gloves for me upstairs. My fingers got cold. What's this about arm wrestling? You ready to fucking lose?"
Knowing an excuse thrown at him when he hears one (really, Dylas is getting so good at this whole 'social' thing), he climbs up the rest of the steps, grabs a pair of gloves from his drawer, and goes back to meet Doug in the restaurant, happy to know he's going to spend the first few minutes of this new year with the people he loves most.

400 words in and, no, this scene is just not going to work in this fic. Which means I need to think of something else. Needs to be more personal, but not sure what to do with it.
I'll save it as a oneshot idea where I can give it the vibes it actually deserves and not trying to wrangle it into this structure.

Alastor's Birdy
Alastor wasn’t a good man.
In fact, he was no longer a man at all.
He was the Radio Demon, an overlord of hell, owner of souls, and host of the Hazbin Hotel.
The only evidence that he was ever human was the gold band worn around his ring finger. No one seemed to notice it; if they did, they didn’t dare ask.
Not much was known about the terrifying radio demon. The others at the hotel often wondered about the origins of the great Alastor Altruist.
Well, not until Mimzy comes along.
“Alastooor, Sweetie, doll-face! So good to see you. How’ve ya been? Good? Good.”
Alastor hugs the small woman while everyone stares in confusion.
“Listen, I was in the neighborhood! I heard you were staying at this ritzy ditzy slob factory-”
A glint of gold catches the light.
“Oh! By the way, where’s your little birdy?”
Alastor’s who? The confusion only continued to grow in the room.
“Oh, Mimzy, you know she would never have ended up down here.”
Who are they talking about?
“Ah yes, she was such a kind soul. The best of the best.”
Finally, someone asks.
“Yo! Lady! Who ya talkin' about?”
“His missus, of course!”
His what?
“YOU WERE MARRIED?!”
Alastor’s eye twitched as private information about his life came to light.
“I am married; we never divorced.”
Everyone stared in disbelief. How could anyone marry Alastor, of all people?
Wait-
“You said she would never have ended up down here. Does that mean that your wife is in heaven? Is she an angel?”
“Charlie, don’t be ridiculous! No one that good could have married him!”
Mimzy pipes up,
“She’s right. Y/n Altruist was too good for the world and sang like a canary!”
That she did…
“I fell in love with you the first time I looked into
Them there eyes
You've got a certain little cute way of flirtin' with
Them there eyes”
All eyes gazed upon the stage. His little birdy was much like him in how they entranced others with their voices. If all he heard for the rest of eternity was that beautiful song of hers, then he could die a happy man.
“They make me feel happy
They make me blue
No stallin', I'm fallin'
Going in a great big way for sweet little you”
It was never supposed to last. It was just for a while to make him seem more normal. To hide his less than socially acceptable hobbies. But she was light, and he was a moth to a flame. As he felt the weight of the box in his hand he wondered how someone like him got blessed with someone like her.
“My heart is jumpin', you sure started something with
Them there eyes
You'd better watch them if you're wise
They sparkle, they bubble
They're gonna get you in a whole lot of trouble
You're overworkin' them, there's danger lurkin' in
Them there eyes”
Her eyes brightened as they landed on him sitting at his usual table in the back. He was done with work early and had come to pick her up so they could walk home together.
“I fell in love with you the first time I looked into
Them there eyes
You've got a certain little cute way of flirtin' with
Them there eyes”
HIS. She was his. He was hers. They were each others.
The only proof that Alastor was ever human was the gold band around his ring finger.
A/N: Here's the fic lol @mag-chan

so, you wanted to start bookbinding?
so @princetofbone mentioned on my post for "factory settings" about wanting to know more about the binding style that i used for it. so i thought i might make a post about it.
i was as terrible as i always am for taking in progress shots, but i can link you to the resources i used in order to make my book. i would also like to point out that "factory settings" is my 120th bind, and i have been doing bookbinding as a hobby for just over 3 years now. unfortunately this means some of the methods that i used for that bind aren't particularly beginner friendly, just in terms of the tools and methods i have used, but i would love to point you in the right direction when it comes to resources. i dont say this to sound pretentious which i fear i might come across, just so that youre fully informed. getting into this hobby is fun and rewarding, but it can definitely be intimidating.
with that caveat, heres a list of links and resources that i have used for bookbinding in general, with additional links to methods i used specifically in regards to this bind.
ASH's how to make a book document. it gives you a great introduction into typesetting fics (where you format the text of fics to look like a traditionally published books) and then turning them into a case-bound book (the style i used for "factory settings"). it is comprehensive, and explains how to use microsoft word to do your bidding. it was invaluable to me when i was just starting out! currently i use affinity publisher to typeset/format my fics for printing, but i only bought and learned how to use that after i had been binding books for a year and a half. i made some beautiful typesets with word, and some of my close friends use it still and design stuff that i never would be able to in my wildest dreams (basically anything by @no-name-publishing)
DAS Bookbinding's Square Back Bradel Binding. a great style to do your first bind in! this method requires, when making the case, to attach the cover board and the spine board to a connecting piece of paper, which makes it so much easier to match the size of the case to the size of the text block (your printed out and sewn fic). using this method is what allowed me to get much more accurately fitting cases, and made me much more confident with the construction of the books i was making. a well-made book is something that is so wonderful to hold in your hands!
DAS Bookbinding's Rounded and Backed Cased Book. This is the specific method that i used to create my bind for "factory settings"! even before i could back my books, i found that watching DAS's videos in particular helped me see how books were traditionally made, and i was able to see different tips and tricks about how to make nicer books.
Book Edge Trimming Without... i trim the edges of my text block using my finishing press and a chisel i have sharpened using a whetstone and leather strop with buffing compound on it. i follow the method for trimming shown in this video!
Made Endpapers. i follow this method for my endpapers, as i used handmade lokta endpapers, and they can be quite thin, but they look beautiful! i used "tipped on" endpapers (where you have your endpaper and then put a thin strip of glue on the edge and attach it to your text block) i used for a very long time before this, but these feel like they are much more stable, as they are sewn with your text block.
Edge Sprinkling. this is the method that i used for decorating the edges of my text block. but the principle is basically clamping your text block tight and then sprinkling the edges. i do not believe you need to trim the edges in order to do sprinkles on the edges, and that's what makes it accessible! i personally just use really cheap acrylic paint that i water down and then flick it onto the edges with my thumb and a paint brush.
Double-Core Endbands. i sew my own endbands, which i followed this tutorial for. that being said, it's kind of confusing, and this video is a bit easier to follow, but it is a slightly different type of endband.
Case decoration. i used my silhouette cameo 4 to cut out my design for "factory settings" in htv (heat transfer vinyl). i also used my cameo 4 to cut out the oval of marbled paper on the front, as i honestly didn't want to try my hand at cutting an oval lol. i also glued some 300 gsm card with an oval cut out of the centre of it onto the cover before covering it with bookcloth, to get a kind of recess on the cover. i then glued the oval of marbled paper onto the top of the recessed area once it was covered with bookcloth, so that it was protected. the images i used were sourced from a mix of rawpixel, canva and pixabay. a more accessible way to get into cover decoration is by painting on a design for your cover as described in @a-gay-old-time's tutorial just here. or even doing paper labels, which look classy imo.
physical materials. sourcing these will depend on your country. i am located in australia, and have compiled a list with some other aussie bookbinders of places to buy from. here is a great post describing beginning materials for getting started binding.
@renegadepublishing. this tumblr is great! its what got me started bookbinding, and being in the discord has been inspiring, motivating, and honestly just one of the best online experiences i have ever had. it is full of resources, and most people in there are amateur bookbinders, with a couple of professionals thrown in. the discord is 18+, and anyone can join!
i'm sorry this post got so long, but i hope that this has a lot of information for you if you would like to get started bookbinding. its one of the best hobbies ive ever had, and i genuinely believe i will have it for the rest of my life.
