ok so, since now we have more of a general idea of how shima sees himself or his past, i started to realize how some changes already started even before we had the chance to know about it. here i will discuss some changes that are visible:

how he’s finally denying his role:

on chapter 46, we learned how shima always felt like he was being used and that he needed to play a role just to feel some sort of connection or acceptance from other people. this, however, made him extremely aware of other people, and develop a severe lack of trust on himself.

but, as we all know, shima saw high school as an opportunity to start changing and seek his true “role” on this huge play: he started to reject everyone who he didn’t felt honest or listen to his feeling first before taking a jump. and that’s one of the reasons why i think he asked mitsumi out (plus all the other things i’ve discussed before). he’s trying to listen to his heart and that is extremely scary.

his perception of mika

we mostly had mika’s pov when the subject is her relationship with shima. but, what i didn’t notice before, is how shima always had a clear perception about her. that’s because he sees her repeating the same things he did before.

when we met mika, we saw how different she was in relation of her internal thoughts and how she behaved socially. she was always trying to make others look at her, accepting anything in order to bring a status for her. do you see a little similarity here with some little boy?

that’s why i love love love the confession scene between him and mika. because he knew she was being honest, but couldn’t reciprocate. she would be the one getting hurt, and he saw this movie before.

the lack of support as he grew up

this is nothing related to points 1 or 2 but this scene came to mind. when both were talking about goals and future, mitsumi had a clear mind of what she was reaching for, while he was running away from himself. and, the first person that came to mitsumi’s mind was her biggest supporter: fumi.

she grew up with someone who cheered for her and made her dream seem possible. he, however, had the exact opposite. until mitsumi came to his life :)

can’t wait to discover what sensei have in mind for this boy. his growth began before we even realized it and i’m extremely proud of him!

listen there really was just something about how in the book, snow’s 3-page descent from hesitant lover boy to deluded psychopath happens entirely in his mind. lucy gray gives him no indication whatsoever that she suspects him, that she’s going to leave or betray him. he’s just sitting quietly in the cabin waiting for her to return when that seed of calculated suspicion, which he has needed to survive the capitol, takes a hold of him and chokes the life out of any goodness left inside him. it really drives home your terror as a reader that “oh my god did he kill her? did she escape? what happened to her? why would he even think that?” in a way that when the movie had to adjust for visualization it lost some of that holy shit this guy has lost it emphasis.
