Blu Christmas Holiday Movie Asplosion 2022! ⛄ Chapter 46: Hogfather 🦌 I mentioned the profound effect the previous film had on young me, well I think it's safe to say that Terry Pratchett has had the greatest effect on me of any author (he is my favorite author of all time, without doubt). To say I was excited when I learned a live action movie was being made of one of the Discworld novels would be an understatement. And it was one of my favorites, Hogfather! As soon as I was able to find a way to watch it here (in the U.S.) I did, and bought the DVD as soon as it was available, then went on to try and acquire any/every version of it I could find on blu-ray as I discovered they were available. It still makes me sad that Sir Pratchett is no longer with us these several years later, but there is such of wealth of his creation to enjoy that I think I'll get by. Anyways, I like this TV movie-- it has its flaws, as anything does (editing is a bit off in places, and a couple moments seem forced off camera presumably due to what the effects would've cost), but it more than makes up for it in humor, charm, and entertainment. I absolutely adore it, and highly recommend it (and the novel). 🌲 ❄️ 🎄 🎅 #Hogfather #2006 (#TerryPratchettsHogfather ) #TerryPratchett #Discworld #MichelleDockery #IanRichardson #DavidWarner #JossAckland #DavidJason #MarcWarren #NigelPlaner #HappyHogswatch #BluChristmasHolidayMovieAsplosion2022 #iLoveMovies #christmasmovies #holidaymovies #xmas #christmasspecials #holidayfilms #holidays #movies #christmas #iLoveChristmas #blurays #bluray #MovieNerd #abluchristmas #christmasfilms #christmasmoviemarathon . https://www.instagram.com/p/Cm7T-6pvSi_f61tqrhUeJpgtrZ9zdj_Qg_WT3I0/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Brazil (1985)
Tumblr media
The first time I saw Brazil, I wasn't quite sure what to make of it. The brilliance of the visuals was obvious but I wasn’t sure if it was a film I'd ever return to. Watching it again, it's grown on me. I have tremendous admiration for this picture.
Sam Lowry (Jonathan Pryce) is an unambitious government employee who daydreams of heroics and love. In a world ruled by paperwork, suspicion is the norm and nothing appears to work properly. The air is pregnant with a mix of apathy and fear as everyone is desperate not to be blamed for a clerical error that has resulted in the arrest of Archibald Buttle (Brian Miller). When Sam tries to rectify the mistake, it sends him on an unexpected path.
Brazil features a unique vision of a dystopia. This is writer/director Terry Gilliam's nightmare. It’s an Earth where everyone is working at an office. Nobody really knows what they’re doing and when they're confronted with a problem, they panic. People run around like chickens with their heads chopped off until they realize they can simply forward it to another department. In the bureaucracy's attempt to cut costs and fix what no one but them believed to be broken, they've created an endless maze of forms and references from which there is no escape. The brilliance of it is that the world of Brazil is scary, but also hilariously inefficient and broken.
The production is first-rate. It’s a beautiful picture to simply look at. The visuals are striking and varied. In a lot of dystopian tales, everything is dull and gray. Here, we get some nice little twists on that idea and the bland palette is broken up with the breathtaking dream sequences. Far from weird for weirdness’ sake, they enhance the mood. If there's a 1984-style future where the little guy might stand a chance without it feeling like a pollyanna fantasy, it's this film. For each character that causes goosebumps, there’s a nut that will make you think that maybe, just maybe, things’ll be ok at the end. It all works because of the love story. If we didn’t have the dream girl (played by Kim Greist), you wouldn’t truly believe Sam’s character and the ending wouldn’t have the impact that it does. This movie is about a lot of things. The madness that’s inherent in oversized offices, the inefficiency of big systems, escape through imagination, and more - just waiting to be discovered.
Brazil contains magnificent performances. Jonathan Pryce - in particular - stands out. He sells you as an everyman in a crazy world and when he gets swept up in this story, it’s that much more of a nail-biter. You instantly sympathize with the guy. Originally, the film's U.S. release was supposed to run much shorter and would've featured an ending that was the tonal opposite of the one we got. I can’t imagine it working. Brazil ends on the perfect note. It is a bit long in the tooth during the middle, sometimes a little excessively weird but that’s ok. If you don’t know what to make of it at first, give it some time and revisit it later. I know that sounds like homework. It’s not. This is just one of those films that has so much going on you're likely to miss some of it the first time around. Brazil is just short of being perfect but in a way, that almost makes it more charming. (Director’s Cut on DVD, October 28, 2016)

and the other that I own 3 different blu-rays, and 1 DVD of (and a copy or two of the original book, and a digital copy, a screenplay with pictures...). This one is adapted from one of my favorite books by my favorite author of all time. ❄️ 🎄I'll Have a Blu Christmas Holiday Movie 'Asplosion 2021!🎄 💿 Chapter 56: Hogfather 🎞️ Though certainly less known than the others at this point in the countdown, this is nevertheless an absolute classic as far as I'm concerned. I wish more people were familiar with it, but those who are tend to love it, I find. Sure, it has some editing, pacing, and directing issues, but, it's just so fun and charming and funny. And of course it is, it's the Discworld's answer to Christmas. ⛄ • • • • • #Hogfather #2006 #TerryPratchettsHogfather #TerryPratchett #MichelleDockery #IanRichardson #MarcWarren #DavidWarner #DavidJason #JossAckland #DEATH #Hogswatch #HappyHogswatch #illHaveABluChristmasHolidayMovieAsplosion2021 #iLoveMovies #christmasmovies #holidaymovies #xmas #christmasspecials #holidayfilms #holidays #movies #christmas #iLoveChristmas #blurays #bluray #MovieNerd #abluchristmas #christmasfilms #christmasmoviemarathon (at Jersey City, New Jersey) https://www.instagram.com/p/CXp5d-tubJt/?utm_medium=tumblr

Dark City (1998)
Tumblr media
Sometimes, a "Director's Cut" is a gimmick to sell DVDs. Dark City is not one of those cases. See this movie but make sure you find a good Blu-ray that contains the original vision, his "cut". Any issues you might've had with the original film are not present in it.
John Murdoch (Rufus Sewell) wakes up one night in a bathtub and learns that he is being sought for a series of ritualistic murders. Suffering from amnesia, he has no idea if he did the crimes or not. If he didn’t, why is he the prime suspect? What do the strange figures in black cloaks that seem to be everywhere have to do with this?
I saw the theatrical version of the film, which means I have to address its flaws (I'll review the Director's Cut later). Let's begin with the film's premise. Sounds pretty spooky, doesn’t it? Amnesia. A serial killer. A quest to clear your identity that might turn into a shocking revelation. Eerie people in black cloaks. I can already picture your mind trying to make sense of it all. Wonder no longer if you're watching the theatrical cut. It tells you right away what's actually going on. It sucks the scares right out of this movie. Not completely but enough to make you go "what were they thinking?"
Dark City has a great premise and its worldbuilding is spectacular. It's unfriendly and sleazy. There's a ton of atmosphere. You don’t know if you’re supposed to be excited to learn John's true identity or if you should be frightened of what he's about to discover. In this way, the experience you feel is the same as his. There's so much you don't know you're unsure if you should be scared or getting ready for an action scene. What happens in this “Dark City” gave me chills. What we learn is so bizarre and nerve-wracking it made me fall in love with the film despite the initial hurdle.
This is a great-looking picture. Some of the CGI effects are a bit dated but nothing’s too glaring. The practical effects are where the wonder's at. They sell this world. So do the performances. I’m not sure if it’s difficult, or easy to play an amnesiac but Rufus Sewell does an impeccable job. He makes it look easy. The side characters are terrific too. Jennifer Connelly is a particular standout, followed closely by Kiefer Sutherland as Dr. Daniel P. Schreber. Is he a hero, or a villain? It’s hard to tell but a compelling question to ponder.
It isn't enough for me to tell you how I feel about Dark City. I need to spread the word. If you want a film that makes you think, that combines fantasy, film noir, horror, and science fiction, this is what you've been looking for. I had some issues with it, but it seems as though they'll all go away with the Director's Cut so learn from my mistake and get on it. It's a visually arresting, smart, and memorable film. A real brain-twister. (Theatrical version on Blu-ray, May 1, 2015)

From Hell (2001)
In today's review, I find that the streets of Victorian Whitechapel are no place for a budding romance, as I attempt a #positive review of the 2001 adaptation From Hell #JohnnyDepp #HeatherGraham #IanHolm #RobbieColtrane #IanRichardson #JasonFlemyng
As you’re no doubt aware, Comic books have had a long synergistic relationship with the big screen. Even the more serious, and aptly named Graphic novels have inspired filmmakers in both their stories and their techniques. Few names, however, carry the same weight as famed graphic artist Alan Moore’s. When one of his works was adapted in 2001, that began a long relationship of subsequent…

A behind the scenes look at the machinations Chief Whip Francis Urquhart uses to get and keep the Prime Minister position over the course of a decade. Wanted to watch this before I watched the Netflix version (it was expiring from instant but not so anymore), glad I did because not only does it prep me for the Netflix version (these are 12 intense, very densely packed episodes) but it gave an interesting look at British government, the House of Commons, and government in general. Also a kind of weird, chilling and too close to the truth look at what is or could be going on in American politics right now 😬🙈🤦🏼‍♀️ I do want to read the #MichaelDobbs novels but may not get around to them for a while. Casting was well done through all three parts: #IanRichardson and especially at the end #DianeFletcher (Francis and Elizabeth were So savage and cold-blooded but I liked it, though I definitely wouldn't wana mess with them), #ColinJaevons and #NickBrimble (Stamper and Corder both started as evil and slimy, but by the end of their roles I rooted for them), #MichaelKitchen, #DavidRyall, #WilliamChubb, and #PaulFreeman among others. All the 80's/early 90's decor, wardrobe and tech - gahhh and a bunch of OMG moments that I kind of can't wait to see the Neftlix equivalent of ... 👍🏼. #drama #BBC #ICouldntPossiblyComment #SusannahHarker #MilesAnderson #AlphonsiaEmmanuel #KittyAlderidge #NicholasFarrell #RowenaKing #IslaBlair #NickolasGrace #YolandaVazquez #KevorkMalikyan (#HouseofCards, '90-'91, 4eps, #ToPlaytheKing, '93, 4eps, #TheFinalCut, '95, 4eps) tv show of 2017 number 1) #HouseofCardsTrilogyBBC #BBCHouseofCardsTrilogy
