Music and Aromatherapy
Tumblr media
There are several articles on the use of music therapy in addition to aromatherapy and the positive effects they have on anxiety. In Son's (2019) study, 107 sophomore students preparing for a test at the nursing college at Sungshin Women’s University, Seoul, Republic of Korea, were enrolled to compare and assess the effects of single intervention modalities and combined intervention.
Origanum majorana (sweet marjoram) and Citrus sinensis (orange) essential oils were chosen for their stress relieving properties at a ratio of 1:1. A lamp was used to diffuse three drops for 20 minutes to reach peak levels in the body while participants listened to Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata .
According to Son (2019), the combination of aromatherapy and music therapy resulted in a significant decrease in test anxiety, state anxiety, and stress. The subjects also performed better in fundamental nursing skills.
Here is a useful guideline for music intervention for relaxation: (Lindquist et al., 2014, p. 114)
Ascertain that patient has adequate hearing.
Ascertain patient’s like/dislike for music.
Assess music preferences and previous experience with music for relaxation.
Provide a choice of relaxing selections; assist with CD/MP3/tablet selections as needed.
Determine agreed-on goals for music intervention with patient.
Complete all nursing care prior to intervention; allow for a minimum of 20 minutes of uninterrupted listening time.
Gather equipment (CD or MP3 player, tablet device, CDs, headphones, fresh batteries) and ensure all are in good working order.
Test volume and comfort of volume level with patient prior to intervention.
Assist patient to a comfortable position as needed; ensure call-light is within easy reach and assist patient with equipment as needed.
Enhance environment as needed (e.g., draw blinds, close door, and turn off lights).
Post a “Do Not Disturb” sign to minimize unnecessary interruptions.
Encourage and provide patient with opportunities to practice relaxation with music.
Document patient responses to music intervention.
Discuss feelings of patient after using music intervention. Identify whether patient encountered any challenges or problems with the equipment.
Revise intervention plan and goal(s) as needed.

Soothing Sunday: Aromatherapy
If you’re like me and stopping to smell the roses is a medically unsafe option, you can still stop and enjoy certain aromas. Just be careful if you have allergies. Setting those off is not ever soothing! There are thousands of aromatherapy options out there, from plug-ins to little oil jars with bamboo sticks. While these are great for creating a calming environment, aromatherapy actually goes a…

These chemicals (known as volatile organic compounds) can occur in gaseous form, which means we can inhale them. But there’s a sub-group of volatile organic compounds, called semi-volatile organic compounds. These can occur both in gas form and absorbed on solid surfaces (including all indoor surfaces, as well as dust).
The harm a chemical causes differs depending on how it enters the body.
Ingested chemicals pass through the intestines and liver before entering the blood.
Inhaled chemicals first pass through the lungs where they may be absorbed directly into the blood.
Chemicals that penetrate the skin can also directly enter the bloodstream.
You don’t even need to have an open wound, as the chemicals can be absorbed directly through the skin.

Less than three months after U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin and her colleagues launched an investigation into the four major American manufacturers of inhalers, three of the companies have relented, making commitments to cap costs for their inhalers at $35 for patients who now pay much more.
25 million Americans have asthma and 16 million Americans have chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), meaning over 40 million Americans rely on inhalers to breathe.
Inhalers have been available since the 1950s, and most of the drugs they use have been on the market for more than 25 years.
According to a statement from the Wisconsin Senator’s office, inhaler manufacturers sell the exact same products at a much lower costs in other countries. One of AstraZeneca’s inhalers, Breztri Aerosphere, costs $645 in the U.S.—but just $49 in the UK. Inhalers made by Boehringer Ingelheim, GlaxoSmithKline, and Teva have similar disparities.
Baldwin and her Democratic colleagues—New Mexico Sen. Ben Ray Luján, Massachusetts Sen. Ed Markey, and Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders—pressured the companies to lower their prices by writing letters to GSK, Boehringer Ingelheim, Teva, and AstraZeneca requesting a variety of documents that show why such higher prices are charged in America compared to Europe.
As a ranking member of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions, Baldwin recently announced that as a result of the letters they had secured commitments from three of the four to lower the out-of-pocket costs of inhalers to a fixed $35.00 rate.
“For the millions of Americans who rely on inhalers to breathe, this news is a major step in the right direction as we work to lower costs and hold big drug companies accountable,” said Senator Baldwin.
A full list of the inhalers and associated drugs can be viewed here.
It’s the second time in the last year that pharmaceutical companies were forced to provide reasonable prices—after the cost of insulin was similarly capped successfully at $35 per month thanks to Congressional actions led by the White House.

“I’m human!” Batman protests when one of the JL members looks at him in shock after he survives a mission that technically should've been able to kill Superman.
“I’m human!” Nightwing argues to his fellow Young Justice members after completely a quadruple backflip twirl and knocked out three guards when not even Kori can do that.
“I’m human!” Red Hood complains to one of his generals after they accuse him of being a ghost and/or zombie. (in all fairness to them he did die)
“I’m human!” Red Robin mutters to the Teen Titans after pulling four all nighters and surviving off of only three packets of sugar and eighty cups of coffee for seven weeks.
“I’m human!” Robin insists to his Mother during one of their monthly visits, despite the fact that he arrived with several stab wounds and what is probably a concussion that should have landed him in the hospital but he still walks straight.
“I’m human!” Orphan signs to the concerned police officer after he just watched her rip a mans shin out with only her fingernails. (he is fine. Orphan doesn't kill)
“I’m human!” Spoiler dismisses the other heroes(vigilantes) looks, seconds after having beat up eight goons with nothing more than a textbook, while telling each one a joke and hitting them in the face if they didn't laugh, laughing at each one she told, and having just landed a triple backflip onto a trashcan.
“I’m human!” Barbara assures her father at their weekly coffee meeting, although she did roll up with Scarecrow fear toxin wafting from her hair, Gothams harbor water covering her wheels.
No, Batfamily, you are not human. Not anymore. That is a technically and you should not die on that hill. (you will not, despite the fact that a real human would) You were born human, and even that isn't scientifically provable.
"I'm a meta." Duke admits, the only reasonable one in the batfamily willing to admit he's different, although no less crazy.
