#DidYouKnow: #Handel’s #sexuality is one that continues to fascinate to this day? He never married & is not known to have been romantically linked w/women – although some biographers offered pious ramblings about his supposed spirituality – while others invented girlfriends or resorted to a ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ policy (interestingly only applied when a historical figure is suspected to be #queer), all to avoid the worrisome possibility that he might’ve been queer! The Italian & German courts in which the young Handel served were populated by princes & cardinals (such as Cardinal Ottoboni & Prince Ruspoli) whose homosexuality was an open secret. His cantatas – written for such patrons to be performed privately – are interesting in that many of them deliberately avoid identifying the beloved’s gender. We feel that he belongs to the queer family precisely because he was a label-defying #maverick. @burghhouse1704 & @bougiesbaroques proudly present ‘A Spa is Born: Seeking Pleasure in Hampstead’.
