"it's so easy to make your own comic website" no the fuck it isn't. Here's a few stupid fucking features I NEEDED for my website to do what I consider the bare minimum which was a nightmare to figure out:

Drop-down menu to select different comic titles AND PAGES WITHIN THOSE TITLES. Let's toss out the second part and say it'll only show the pages for the comic currently being targeted, the issue is virtually identical. You need a dynamic drop-down if you have more than one large comic

Jumping 20 pages ahead or back, somehow this was a big issue, you STILL NEED A WAY TO NAVIGATE comics with DOZENS AND DOZENS OF PAGES

Having a page move forward/back with the arrow keys on a keyboard

Having a terminal page, so for example, you're on page 1, you try to go back 1 page — code that makes your website not shit itself if someone tries to do that. You probably need an error landing page, too.

a "jump to page number" text field

A backend way to categorize different stories, the backend issues were such a shit show for me

A comments section, oh my god the comments section. So you need a text field that allows someone to type a message, press a button, and then it creates a new div with their message. You will need to include in this code a way to prevent someone from just straight up injecting their own code through the text field btw. But people won't be able to refer to each other without some kind of name. So you need another text field where someone can enter their name, OR build a login system and the complications the latter brings are batshit. You also need an easy way to delete comments yourself, either by holding them until approved or by having a delete button or both. You need a way to prevent bot spam too btw. I cannot stress enough how big a deal the comment section is for readers and how stupid difficult it is to make one functional

Oh, you wanted to leave patreon? You wanted a way to make money off your webcomic? Welcome to the issue of data security, because you are now handling people's financial info. A PayPal button won't track subscription payments for you. You want to track if somebody's paid, you have to code that too. Also you now DEFINITELY need a login system, a way to secure passwords stored on the site, etc.

It fucking sucks, there are legitimate reasons most people look for hosting instead of building their own site, there are reasons people get paid REALLY WELL to make websites as a job, and, frankly, it's just totally unhinged to throw the expectation of website management and coding on top of an already brutal pile of skills and work schedule needed to make a successful webcomic.

Man, if you want to be pissed off, reading about ovarian tumors is one of the way to get there.

Detecting ovarian cancer early is hard--it's often described as having "no symptoms"--but actually, the symptoms is has are indistinguishable from the symptoms of "having a uterus and ovaries that are functioning more-or-less within tolerances."

One study came to the conclusion that, to improve diagnosis to the point it would save lives, people (with the aforesaid anatomy) would need to get imaging (ultrasound, etc.) done when they have pelvic pain lasting more than two weeks. Christ, is there anyone (with the aforesaid anatomy) that hasn't had pelvic pain lasting more than two weeks?

And then you get into how existing disparities exacerbate this problem. I was on this site called Radiopaedia--it's a free database of imaging case studies--looking at cases with masses similar to mine, and I found this one. This patient was reporting gastrointestinal symptoms for months, and was, eventually--because she was obese--referred for weight-loss surgery.

Once they started doing it, they found an ovarian mass the size of a cantaloupe in her. The case study is light on detail, but it seems pretty likely that she was repeatedly told that if she had an upset stomach, it was probably from eating too much. Nope! It was from having her guts literally rearranged by something the size of a bowling ball. If anyone had taken her situation seriously enough to perform imaging of any kind, it would have been super-obvious.

(Hers turned out to be benign, BTW, so she probably ended up being fine--but a cancerous mass the same size wouldn't have been detected any earlier.)

(Mine, BTW, is a couple of centimeters smaller than that one--it was palpable during a routine physical because I'm fairly slim, and that led to me being referred for imaging.)

Then you get the studies saying, "Well, we could detect a lot more of these things if ultrasound was part of the routine workup for patients with this anatomy, but then we'd be finding a lot of benign functional cysts, too." Yes, and? Why is that a problem? "Well, then patients would expect us to actually do something about their cysts, especially if they're chronic and painful." And? "Well, we really can't be assed."

Speaking of toggles, are you planning to undo existing toggles such as the ability to turn off best stuff first, snooze tumblr live, don't allow tumblr to put posts you liked on others' dashes?

i get why toggles aren't sustainable for major, site-wide UI changes, but undoing these specific toggles would make the site just like any other social media platform (all of which are better funded and better run btw) removing any incentive i have to stay here, even though it has been my online home for so long and i'd so prefer it to stay that way.

i just hope you don't destroy the site completely while trying to make it profitable and let at least some toggles stay.

funny enough, i was talking about this already a bit today, and i've written a couple of proposals about it. basically: none of the dashboard preference toggles' functionality and effects would go away, we'd just consolidate them into fewer, more clear options.

for example, instead of having three separate toggles for different dashboard recommendation injections, we'd have just one. and it'd be named better. similarly, i'd want to rename "Best stuff first" to something clearer, because i don't think it's adequately communicating what it does. there's a lot of work we can do to just make the confusing mass of settings easier to navigate and understand, and move them to places closer to what they control. we have a dashboard tab configuration experiment going on right now that moves that stuff to the actual dashboard tab bar, instead of being buried somewhere else.

an important distinction, when thinking about this stuff, is separating "toggles and settings" from "configuration and affordance" in an interface. a core part of tumblr is being able to customize and curate your experience, and that's not going to change as long as i can help keep us staying true to that guiding principle. nobody at tumblr wants to change that. however, the actual functionality of how that manifests can come in many forms.

for example, we're working on ways to build communities and custom feeds on tumblr, and the very simple straightforward way to do that is to make a big form that you can fill out. but that's intimidating, almost nobody wants to put forth that much effort anymore, for good reason. instead, we could make the initial creation process one-step and simple, and move the configuration and customization later as an evolving flow, making it feel more like a game or a sorting/organizing exercise, which is something people on tumblr love.

but a lot of these kinds of changes are radical for those of us who've been on tumblr for years, and have learned how to do things "the hard way" (as i call it). that's the difficult thing to overcome: how to make this stuff easier and more friendly for more people, without breaking too much of the work that people have already put into the platform.

PMT01: Scaffold nano & Trowel pico

Scaffold nano & Trowel pico v1.1.0 have been released tonight.

Updates add a myStages to Scaffold, and QoL improvements to the powerup editing experience in Trowel pico.

Now that it's out, I'd like to also take this moment to talk about the development and release of both.

One year minus one day ago I had announced in Twitter I would work on the level editor for the demo version of BRICKBREAKER SPRINT (nano) so fans could breathe in more life to the game even in its limited state and to also showcase how much it can do with its limited toolset at the current time.

The reasoning for a completely separate technology version was simple, WebGL. WebGL in Unity is so limited for even the most basic things (I had to install a package to support cross-app copy/paste before nano+'s release!) and I said "hey, might as well give the multiplatform users something to be able to edit with, doesn't need to be just windows which is what the currently unpolished-ish trowel desktop is!"

But then it hit me that the same limitations would likely make it hell for me to support just levels downloaded as files (internally stored with "bxtp" extension btw :) ) so then... I came at a crossroads

just say FKIT and not do it, make ppl wait for BB Lite

still say FKIT and kickstart the foundation of the online service that I had planned since the first design iteration of the game

guess what I took?

I don't regret it.

Currently, Scaffold's login system is attached to itch.io. In the future, this will use my own account system (called Luna, still in development)

Now then... developing Scaffold's frontend was a challenge in itself, because I'm a masochist. I chose yet another technology to make the frontend in, this time Svelte, Sveltekit as backend saying "okay, no more fear of ServerSideRendering now that I can afford a VPS for this"

but... Svelte has been an absolute joy to work with. Its learning curve even smoother than React's (my first frontend framework, which powers cometSpectrum!), and I got everything rolling very quickly

At first, I was going to use my regular website design language, but it's kinda jank, so I said NO and started from scratch with a simpler façade. For the style I wanted to pursue... it was perfect. Some people have complimented the graphic aspect of the site, and I'm happy I could deliver exactly what I wanted. (and yes the icons being in opposite directions compared to bbsprint's UI is entirely on purpose)

BTW, the site is made in such a way that a BB theme could be used as the site's theme and every color will change except for PNG icons, i love it (this functionality is used for people using their OS's Light theme)

This is actually the first made-by-me website project that has "public" facing write actions to a database and stores actual files. It works... very well, and I am very happy about it. It's like a combination of everything I've learnt up to this point, down to API design and interop between programs.

I did say this was the foundation for Scaffold, and I plan for this game to keep Scaffold as its prime way of getting stages, even when getting to storefronts like Steam or GOG. Kind of like an osu! situation.

Lay In My Pine Overcoat (Share With A Stranger)

The title has a couple things going on here so I’ll break it down:

what is “my pine overcoat”:

I do like, research, about things to make my weirdass jargon sound better or at least not entirely terrible, but my regular website for noir slang was running out of interesting phrases and terms I could reasonably use, but I don’t quite remember the site I pulled pine overcoat from. I’m pretty sure I took it from this site which defines pine overcoat as a coffin

The whole phrase, “lay in my pine overcoat” is functionally me writing a vaguely noir pov melodramatic line that would translate to “lay in my coffin” which does not sound as cool

What about “(share with a stranger)”?

This is a reference to hobie, who, in the title, is referred to as a stranger. There is a degree of vagueness that comes from the term stranger that you don’t get with saying friend or acquaintance, making how I’d translate the phrase different. Share with a stranger is changed to sharing with him

Why is he sharing? Uh. They’re boyfriends now. Do you NOT want to have a shared coffin and spend your eternal afterlife with YOUR queerplatonic partner?🤨

What do you mean satosugufication of punknoir? (Distressed kaomoji)

What is satosugu?

This is an explanation with the base assumption that you’ve never even heard of jjk:

Satosugu is the pairing between Gojo Satoru and Geto Suguru from the Jujutsu Kaisen series. They are gay and really sad. Akutami sensei just will not let the gays win huh? (See itafushi for more on the gays never winning)(see literally anything post flashback arc on nobody ever winning in jjk)

Satosugu has my whole heart in a violent grip with hostages and I’ve always loved doomed by the narrative/they’re just sad gays stuff(trigun moment) so I just wrote the line while thinking about stsg. No actual evil foreshadowing or anything unless that’s what you guys are into

(I can probably whip up a quick “you’re ruining the canon >:((“ plot)

That same site has a definition for punk at it reminds me of the spider-fag bit that happened over on the one blog(I’ll find it), had a quick laugh but it made me think about how noir would probably know that definition and would therefore be acting without referencing knowledge he has

I like cold sand. I assume cold dirt would be equally enjoyable. I’m not like, diagnosed, and dodging being asked about it or getting a diagnosis is a little counterproductive when I’m like, making claims over here, but I’m trying to maximize my rights

I think we can all also agree noir at the very least is a massive fan of colors.

A few hours later finds them both on a new rooftop, dirt washed from their hands and out of under their fingernails after finishing up work on the garden.

I’d literally drop dead if I had dirt or any kind of stuff under my fingernails and didn’t do something about it. I wash my hands often even at home, especially at home. I needed everyone to know that they washed their hands and don’t have dirt under their fingernails.

It’s spur of the moment but it’s not like noir is just gonna take it back come on guys

Shoutout to you guys for voting on the poll and deciding this was more in character for him to say, this line was beating my ass so I just wrote them both and literally left it like that while writing the rest until the poll ended then just deleted the losing line

"Did- did I overstep?" Ben's shoulders creep upward as he leans away slowly. "I'm, sorry, I—"

"You gotta tell me all of it man."

Ben and Hobie are both very caring and I feel like they’re also both quite articulate when it comes to understanding themselves and the world around them. Bens initial and oh so eloquent(/sarcastic) response of "Euh. Uh,” comes from shock and surprise because he comes from an era where people just really don’t do feelings very deeply, and talk of boundaries and such isn’t really a common practice up until literally just a few years ago.

Hobie on the other hand is what I feel just generally socially aware in general given, you know the punk stuff and activism, so I absolutely believe he would encourage noir to explicitly state things the way he wants to without cutting anything out in order to fully understand as well as avoid making noir uncomfortable or bothered

Hobie holds out his hand. "It's alright," He reassures, "we could hold hands and be in love not romantically."

Hobie uses very simple language here and doesn’t even bring up aspec identities or anything here. I’ve said it in the tags of pine overcoat but I want to talk about it a little more here

Noir is from 1933. Things are very very different during that time, great depression, post wei and approaching wwii(though people don’t know it at the time) and just a generally shit time for minorities too. I’m not gonna talk about social nuances of the experience of being oppressed but I will talk about the part where a lot of these communities have to stay underground or are very private to individual people.

It’s because of that that there is very little information on your own identity available at the time. This coupled with a nonexistent internet means that you have to go out yourself and find these people in your community and by then it’s very risky due to the whole, you know minorities and this and that during that time

It’s also literally 1933. Noir is not gonna understand a majority of any type of slang you can come up with, and he’s going to have the shittiest time understanding modern humor and historical context given the being in history aspect. He doesn’t know about 9/11. The twin towers were built in like. 1970. He’d be about 60 by the time they’re built. He’s be in his 90s by the time 9/11 happened. There is so much that he won’t get because of just how much has happened.

He’s obviously picked up on the big parts of history that happen in the future. He’s probably heard enough about the world wars and all, but there’s also a lot of things that are considered universally known that he just. Doesn’t know. Like there is no way he knows about flappy bird or roblox. Or minecraft. He is absolutely always having something explained to him and while he probably appreciates it he’s also totally on the verge of snapping because

It’s just certainly a time having every single thing explained to you.

I feel that hobie can pick up on this pretty easily since they’re already pretty close in BS after initially meeting. He’d explain things in a way that minimizes having to ask follow up questions, so instead of saying something like “we can just be queerplatonic” or telling him about being aromantic or asexual he says that they can just be not romantic about it. He’d still tell noir about it in more depth eventually but when introducing new things he would probably try to stay simple about it

"Can I only lift up my mask halfway?"

Noir does not like his face. I’d say sorry but. I need to nerf his self confidence just a little bit since he gets to have that voice. Because like ik it’s probably possible but how are you achieving that tone without t. 💀 like his face is perfectly fine too but I just couldn’t not make him self conscious though

Ben marks the date on a calendar long after that moment when they eventually separate.

I want him to grow a small pot of marigolds and give them to hobie as like and anniversary present. I probably won’t write it but I want you all to know he’s doing that.

On to my authors note

i just had the shittiest time writing not angst. i'm just naturally bad at straight up non-angst(refer to my orv piece "sunfish" for more on that)

Like it says on the tin, writing straight fluff is poor for my soul. I wrote a stardew piece and I just did not have my heart in it. I don’t like it and it’s the only stardew fic I’ll write so you can check it out for more elaboration on why I wrote it in the notes. I wrote an omniscient readers viewpoint fic and while I wouldn’t say there was any fluff, you can tell that things got significantly lighter in tone after dokja does that silly thing that is not actually silly

[…] when i legally obtain the rest of noir comics i'll make a connected series that includes noir's actual comic continuity and not just vaguely referencing it.

I was vaguely trying to include noirs comics but there’s like so little I can find on him that I can comfortably consume(I have a thing about watching videos and it seems like a majority of content I can find about him is video) that I’ve decided to be vague about it and do whatever from here on out.

In the event I obtain the omnibus or whatever it is that has like all the comics he appears in, I will absolutely make like an alternate series that splits off sometime around now in the BS timeline in order to work with his comic continuity

how do we feel about hobie btw? did i do shit? hopefully not.

How did I do. Please someone drop a tutorial on how to understand writing hobie. Or how to write his accent like I did some digging and found some stuff but it’s all kind of surface level.

anyways remember how its canon to BS that theres just a team of spiderpeople dedicated to writing a newsletter about him. that noir does not know about.

As a physical media collector and a media archvist myself it irks me so bad when other collectors gloat about how amazing and great physical media is and how terrible digital media is. some are so elitistic they outright refuse to buy anything digitally. it's totally cool to prefer one over the other and I do have a fondness for physical over digital myself but I'm not going to be a smug condescending asshole towards people who prefer digital or can only do digital. anyway here's some hard facts for some of you:

Yes digital games can sadly get delisted but 99.9% of times if you purchased it before you can still have access to it. Same goes for physical media btw. They don't reissue those puppies forever. If there's 500k copies out there in the wild it means only 500k people will ever get to own a copy of that game physically. Sadly both physical and digital can have a finite number going on for them. Some games that are on steam haven't been available for purchase (as new copies) for decades.

Digital and physical games can both get archived. "but you have to mod a console to archive digital console games" well yea true but if you can spend look up a 20 year old game's cracked exe off a dodgy site so you won't have to insert the CD everytime then you can do that stuff too, just saying.

Just buying 300 console games and putting them on the shelf isn't preservation or archivism. That's collecting. Archivism is when you actively back them up and store them somewhere for preservation sakes.

Physical games can also stop working and it doesn't even have to be disk damage or disc rot. It can be as little as the activation keys being tied to a server and the server that validated said keys being shut down. Also if the game is multiplayer-only then tough shit also. Owning that game physically isn't giving you any advantage in that scenario

Going back to cracked exes, DRM is a problem on both physical and digital (on PC) which means that archiving PC games is just as hard for digital as it is for physical

Piracy is an important part of archivism. One day your great-great-great-grandkids won't be playing the physical copies you get them but will get an archived backup. Piracy is playing the long game basically.

Disc Laser and console components die eventually or will die over the years. Owning a digital copy or having backed up your copy is often the only way around that. After install, on both modern consoles and PCs the game is all on the hard drive, the disc just functions as an unlock key. Damage your "key" and the game won't work despite all being on the hard drive

Physical games ultimately suffer the same fate as digital games in the end. Games get forgotten, don't get reissued, limited numbers of copies become even more limited as years pass.

My point is: stop complaining about which is better and start archiving those games you love so much. Stop having kneejerk smug reactions when media is removed because "PhYsIcAl iS bEtTeR" like shut up. I like physical media too but I don't have to be an obnoxious fucking jerk about how cool it is.

I'm sure you're right but why do you dislike the Carol Corps when you're such a Carol Danvers fan???

First, never assume anyone on the Internet you don't know is a dog is right.

In case this wasn't clear I consider myself foremost a Marvel's Marvel Family fan. Anyone who has held one of the Marvel Family titles (Captain Marvel, Ms. Marvel, Protector of the Universe, Quasar, etc.) and their supporting cast is part of it. I think it should be more often conceptualized as such, the way the DC Marvel Family (or the Batfamily, the Spider-Family, etc.) is, with one ongoing per character regularly crossing over, maybe a common editorial, etc.

The Monica fandom is fairly friendly with the Vells fandom/general cosmic Marvel fandom, the Kamala fandom, etc. united under the stance of wanting more exposure for their characters, while the "Carol Corps" (ie those who are KSD stans first and foremost) are extremely hostile to any Marvel Family content outside what's in the footprints of Kelly Sue DeConnick (and you know how I feel about her characterization).

This can have an undercurrent of queerphobia like the attempts at making cosmic Marvel "more mainstream" (ie straight) certainly, but what is most overt is just how insanely racist they are, which I'm certainly not the first to notice. (I mean, Monica fans were already fighting KSD on this very site over this that she had to write (as the sixth issue of her run) a story acknowledging Monica (which she never did for Phyla btw) and having her team up with Carol, but with Carol absorbing Monica for a power-up, which might have been a way to "get at" the Monica fans who were bothering her under the pretense of appeasing them.)

However, it became an increasingly major problem after the movie was released (with its infamously racist treatment of the Rambeau family, and arguably of Nick Fury), bringing a lot of attention to the characters. It has resurfaced as the "Carol Corps" lash out at any news suggesting that Monica or Kamala might get more exposure (as the director and writer of the sequel is a black Monica fan), like when the name "The Marvels" was revealed, when SLJ called Monica the Black Captain Marvel, even with something as anodyne as the account for movie news updates posting a comic-book panel of Monica.

This behavior has gone widespread with functionally no overt pushback from editors and writers. I mentioned that KSD issue with bizarrely racist subtext surrounding Monica borne out of a fight with Monica fans on here (which may not a big deal in the grand scheme of things and I don't think KSD is a racist, at least against black people, but it represent the earliest spat – the general lesbophobia surrounding Phyla-Vell, Tracy Burke, and Avril Kincaid under KSD and Stohl is quite more concerning).

This has led modern cosmic Marvel writers to ignore Carol's existence as much as editorial will let them to (LoCM makes her basically unwrittable in a cosmic Marvel context anyway, which was the point), while Monica Rambeau writers have made their distaste for the racist treatment of the character, and in particular for KSD's run and the MCU, quite clear, indirectly in the comics themselves through not always subtle jabs, more directly outside of them (1, 2).

10. How do you decide what to write?

As in, how do I decide what's going to be a WIP and what just stays a daydream: The more niche it is the more likely I will end up writing it because I write stories for me. So, Top Priority of getting me fed is to write the stories I want to see. I check the relevant tags on Ao3, see there's like... nothing for my idea, despair, then open LibreOffice.

As in how do I decide which WIP to work on? Literally I use the carl-bot /choose function on any Discord server that has it. 😂😂 As long as I am writing something, that's good enough.

12. Are there any tropes you used to dislike but have grown on you?

🤔 Hmm based on the fanlore.org site I think a trope I once was meh about that I have come to like is Genderbend. But then I tried writing a bit of it and decided I liked some things about it after all. 😅

13. Are there any tropes you used to like but don’t anymore?

😓 Oof yeah, you know, I used to be cool with hatesex/enemyslash tropes but somewhere along the line I got real boring, and decided I have way more fun if the characters actually like each other on an emotional level, even if they're hard pressed to admit it. Now it just squicks me out to see it, or any pairing where I can't conceive of a canon-verse way for it to happen that wouldn't just be hatesex/enemyslash.

23. What’s a trope, AU, or concept you’ve never written, but would like to?

One day I will write a casefic! I don't even have a WIP for it but ONE DAY it will happen and it will be SHORT and FUN and I WILL NOT spend 40k+ on it. 😤😤😤

30. Have you ever written something that was out of your comfort zone? If so, what was it, and how did it affect your approach to writing fic thereafter?

🙃 Haaaaa... well... my comfort zone is long format fic heavy in description, action, plot, world building. Outside of that is... snappy dialogue, humor, short fic. I think the closest I came to outside my comfort zone is my chengxuan fic at 9.2k words but the dialogue isn't that interesting. I also have my recently scrapped WIP "Cringe Fic" (referenced in question 12) that was me working through writing a bunch of tags/tropes I otherwise can't read, to see if I can write it in a way I would like to read.

Writing the chengxuan one-shot didn't really do anything for me besides get me started publishing for the MDZS fandom. It was a fluke, in my opinion.

Cringe Fic had the bonus of expanding the base of ideas I am willing to try and write for, e.g. genderbend.

49. What are you currently working on? Share a few lines if you’re up for it!

🙄 Okay so don't laugh (you can laugh), but as it turns out, I am writing a genderbend that I actually intend to publish when it's done. I noticed that there are only 24 works for Female Mò Xuányǔ tag, 19 of which are wang/xian. None of which are chengxian. I always wanted to explore canon Wei Wuxian actually experiencing dysphoria in his new body and making Mo Xuanyu female I feel will heighten that further. I'm thinking I want him to ping-pong between feeling everything is too different but also finding joy in what he has now and settle somewhere in the genderfluid realm of dealing with his 2nd life.

And of course I want it to be chengxian because 🤤 oh wow the drama there...

It's still in the very rough draft stages but here's a part that's interesting to me.

Wèi Wúxiàn traces the trail of brighter crimson to his arms. One sleeve is a clean bright vermilion, the other is soaked nearly black. “Not good,” he croaks with a voice that isn’t his. It’s a higher pitch, even for how ragged and torn it sounds. “Fuck.” Immediately, his good hand comes up to his throat that’s not his throat, where his questing fingertips fail to catch the presence of a knot that should bob as he swallows air. The same hand he trails down slowly, dreadfully, between his collarbones to his sternum, where a narrow, soft, valley goes undisguised by the vermilion robes wrapped around him. He looks down to his chest. Not his chest. His foggy mind catches up and grades the new look. Modest but present. Then his thoughts race ahead and the pins and needles of sensation wash away in the heat of panic. Wèi Wúxiàn spreads his knees and his hand drops down, but he knows.

I just threw myself down a costuming rabbit hole trying to figure out how exactly the tabards part of Jedi uniforms work. And now I am frustrated about the Jedi costumes functionally in general.

You would think there’s a simple answer: there is not.

First of all, the movies: okay so it’s clear that, like with many costumes, some bits are just basically an illusion for the camera. Never more clear is this than in the Under Tunic, in which only the visible sleeves and the collar actually are functionally part of the costume; everything else on the shirt is basically to hold these in place for the camera while not overheating the actor. Every cosplayer ever is basically just bullshitting what happens in that area after a certain point, but the general consensus seems to be “a shirt with a minimum 2″ thick collar that closes by folding left to right; fastening method is up to you (and maybe your guild).”

Okay fine, we can best guess that if we’re working with it in fic or art, but if we are looking to cosplay for help figuring it out, it’s not that simple. For example, if I were to consult the general standards as given by the Rebel Legion, the under tunic can’t be kimono, judo gi or karate gi styled - which is wild to me, btw, considering their own standards page reference links to a site which suggests ideal patterns in those styles and most of the visual shorthand from the movie costumes and the source of the Jedi’s inspiration suggests these as fairly strong matches, but I digress.

The tabards, basically, in the official costumes are largely bullshitted for camera reasons, with seams hidden under the belt, and if they’re tacked to the over tunic or the actor’s sewn in for the day, I wouldn’t be surprised in the least. Most everyone is bullshitting these in some way, but the consensus is that any seam has to be on the back, preferably hidden by the obi. Also if you’re trying to tack it to yourself, that better not be visible. I have seen tape, velcro and snaps - valid, I say, because I ran into a similar issue with the hooded Robin cape.

For fic and art though? I am really frustrated by them. You can’t tack them down in universe - it would not make sense. It’s stupid and I know I’m being stupid and pedantic about it but I want to know how it’d work if you took the costume element out of it and no one has. Should they be threaded through one part of the obi and secured by tying the obi? Is there a part of the tunic they feed through which is covered by the obi? Is there a cord or snaps securing them that we don’t see that should be there in universe? Should ones extend down also feed into a panel on the back or a skirt that matches the over tunic instead of just splitting? I HAVE FUCKING QUESTIONS.

The obi also frustrates me because, functionally, almost everyone just goes ahaha yeah it’s thicccc, must be thicker than the belt by an order of at least x proportional to your body, and if you decide to put in velcro or something make sure it’s hidden in the back. If you were in universe, would it be velcroed or would it be tied? If it’s a fabric obi, how do you tie it? Do you tuck the ends under in a specific way? If it’s supposed to be only the width of your waist and is not the length of an obi from Earth say, how then do you wear it - does it have tie drawstrings that should be tucked under, does it have hooks or eyelets? Is there meaning to how you tie it? Are there decorative knots for fancy events or different sects or branches of specialization?

Official movie costumes kinda goes Shrug because they’re not designed to be actually functional in any real-world sense: they’re designed to film and do stunts in. They’re a minefield of jury-rigging. And then you have Legends material, which is straight up artists going Rule of Cool, which I respect cause, well, at least they’re honest about it in that sense. Obviously, groups listing costume standards for cosplayers are no help here, since, let’s be real, they’re not gonna be experimenting with how these things should realistically function so much as how they fit the standards they’ve established. It’s all about the standard with them.

Anyway, I can’t stop sneezing and this stupid tabard shit is going to BOTHER me forever, I can feel it. Why is it always like this with costumes?? i’m just gonna have to bullshit something myself aren’t i

this is why i don’t make mention of this most of the time btw. people on this site have absolutely no concept of privacy. i made, on my personal blog which has under 100 followers (LOL) , vague mention of what details i was comfortable sharing as well as the conversationally functional fact of me not being transfeminine (and therefore not implying a relationship to transmisogyny that i do not have) and that is somehow open to interpretation and speculation because a lot of you, to an extent, still feel entitled to personal physical information about other non-cis people. i have given more than enough information, which i was never obligated to give you, and frankly all of you should fucking know better. it’s a fluke to accidentally ask a rude question. i can understand sometimes we don’t do as much thinking as we should. i do it too. but it’s full on aggression and malice to come to me as a faceless stranger and tell me what you think i am and what body parts i must have because i’m not labeling myself the “right way” for you. beyond even myself you just need to stop assuming things about people. if people are fine being very open about their experiences and the details of their identities that’s a good thing. it’s not a requirement, though. mind your god damn business. thanks. i will be sure to never talk about this again now that it’s been so thoroughly proven you guys don’t know how to behave.

uhhh i just bought a second gamecube lol

like. my gamecube is a dol-101 which means it doesn't have a digital out port (which means converting it to hdmi is always going to look like shit) and i've wanted to get it modded to add the port but that seems to be impossible at least for the time being (the kits have been sold out for so long and now the one site selling them seems to have taken down the listing. plus on top of that i'd have to have someone do it for me and idk where to go for that either) (from what i can tell getting a modchip added also seems trickier than on a dol-001?)

most of the advice ive seen for this situation is "just get rid of it and get a dol-001" which is uh. not the point. this is my childhood gamecube i want to keep using it. it's also a perfectly good console so it's annoying to see people so eager to just throw them aside

but i looked... and for just $100 i found a dol-001 that was already modded with picoboot (ipl replacement that makes the console boot into whatever you want) and they refurbished it (cleaned all the parts, recapped the motherboard which according to them will extend its life by 25 years). disk drive doesnt work but with picoboot that's kind of unimportant. seller seems to be pretty reliable too, they have almost exclusively good reviews going back to 2016

feels a little redundant to get a second gamecube, especially since i can technically already get a digital signal out of natively run gamecube games on my wii u and wii... it does add that to the game boy player though (also: with picoboot you can set a button to hold to automatically boot into the game boy interface, which btw is the homebrew replacement for the game boy player software that does a better job displaying the games apparently). also been thinking about getting a gba flashcart anyway (ez flash omega definitive edition) to add more to that

also my experience using nintendont on my wii u has been kind of awkward. you have to go all the way into wii mode and the homebrew channel and nintendont and then pick the game (sure, injects are a thing, but i've tried a few and they all black screen, and i've tried everything the devs of the inject program, uwuvci, say to do to make them work--and they also say for some people it just doesn't for some reason and nobody knows why). sometimes i get in there and it gets some kind of error and i have to start all the way over. meanwhile modded gamecube boots into swiss and you pick a game from there and that's it

the drawback is that since you're loading from an sd card (either in a memory card adapter or in a serial port 2 adapter, they're functionally the same) there's compatibility issues since it can't always read from there fast enough to run the game full speed. however there's also something called the M.2 loader coming that'll be able to load the data faster (from the ssd you attach to it). you plug it into serial port 1 (where the broadband adapter would go). but anyway if there are any games that don't run right booted from the sd i could probably just do them on the wii u or wii instead

anyway. my hope is that someday i'll be able to get my original gamecube modded (and then either sell this new one or give it away i suppose?), but it's good to have a backup

and it's not like gamecubes are going to get cheaper, probably, so getting that now is good i guess? like. that's a really good deal .a gamecube that's pre-modded and refurbished and apparently comes with an sd card? (the seller casually mentioned they could include some games if asked. the only way to run games on this one is through an sd card, so those would have to be iso files. on an sd card. if theyre giving me the card already then copying files doesnt cost them anything. so maybe there's a card in there). anyway yeah all that for $100. pretty good i think

well. maybe someday as they become more scarce people won't be so quick to abandon dol-101s and there'll be more resources for modding them

Personal Lore Stuff

General Edition

First a disclaimer: A lot of my lore is just gonna be tweaking things about Flight Rising/Sornieth that I just don't like/vibe with, so if that'll bother you I advise not reading further.

Disclaimer part two: Some of the stuff mentioned here may already be canonical and I either A. haven't read about it yet (in which case feel free to shoot me the relevant readings ^^), B. I'm incorporating and expanding on it, or C. Incorporating and altering it.

Punctuation usage note:

Parenthesis () are used to signify a related but seperate thought to what they're grouped with.

Brackets [] are used as a form of authors note.

Now to begin: This is largely just going to be one chaotic info dump of all the stuff living in my head rn so I can come back and organise/edit it later but also so I can link it in my pinned cause I use verbiage that relates to my personal lore and figured this'd help anyone who might be confused.

Travel Listings

Name is a work in progress but the basic idea isn't.

The current system of dragons being put up for auction didn't really sit well with me [I understand it's function as the FR game itself goes don't at me please] so after some mulling it over I settled on Travel Listings!

The general idea is that dragons who are looking to relocate either to a new Clan within their own flight (flight AH) or just anywhere on Sorienth (Site-wide AH) can post the travel costs for them to do so with their stuff. When a Clan who's willing to sponsor the fees for the dragon posts them the dragon is then able to move in with the Clan!

This helps maintain the autonomy that dragons have as established in canon lore as well as giving the world a fun "new" mechanic [in my opinion at least]. In addition is use this as a basis for my pricings. If I consider the cost listed alongside each dragon as travel costs it let's me make some base costs guides based on things like breed, gene rarity, eye rarity, and in the event of a one-on-one arranged travel fees the cost for "luggage" (ie familiars, outfits, etc. which, btw, if you arrange for a dragons travel with me directly they'll almost always come with luggage).

The above is why I might seem to price travel fees a little weirdly and while I'm ok with the prices being a little funky I do want to be fair so if I unintentionally price something outrageously please let me know! ^^

Familiars

Familiars being listed as and treated as items within the game canon bugs me a bit as many of if not most/all of the familiars are canonically described as having sentience (sentience in this case meaning being living) them being treated as items isn't great for me.

Similar to Travel Listings I'll price/talk ahout/treat familiars with the same/similar verbiage. Familiars get travel fees as well albeit less involved than dragons might.

Familiars will also be treated as thinking beings who've choosen to come stay with our Clan for xyz reasons within lore contexts.

This leads me into my next bit:

The Coliseum

I'm not 100% posi on the canon lore surrounding Coli stuffs but the stuff I've developed whilest grinding in it as follows:

The Coliseum was started by [unestablished] as a way for dragons and beast clans to, hopefully, find some common ground.

Each coli arena/area is a neutral sparing ring/arena set up in each of the diff regions.

All who come to them agree to leave past issues/agressions/conceptions at home and have acknowledged that they are there to learn from eachother, as well as to have a good time. Each person who enters the Coli area agrees to do their part to ensure a friendly and (relatively) peaceful enviroment for all participants.

To be chosen to represent your Clan in the coli is considered a high honour by most involved and the importance of its neutrality is widely established/acknowledged. In the spirit of this many participants, dragon and beastclan alike, will bring gifts/offerings for their opponents [the coli drops]. Some participants might even find that they vibe/work really well with a clan/it's members and as such will choose to return with those dragons to their clans [familiar drops].

Due to the nature of the Coli its generally frowned upon for participants fo significantly higher levels to enter a match against participants of much lower levels [lack of exp gain], the exception to this are for teams who have come specifically to share their knowledge with those at lower levels [this parts honestly just so I can grind lower levels with my lvl 25s and not feel so bad about it 🤣].

Aaaaand that's about all I've got at the moment, there's other stuff that's dragon/breed line specific that'll be its own post(?).
