“Come on!” Alek insisted. The air in the hall, flickering with warm yellow light from its fires, was loud and jovial. The assembled group gathered around one of the establishment’s long wooden tables. Alek held out a scrap of the exotic food, brandishing it gently at Strahd. “Try it.”

Strahd turned his face away, a look of irritation plain on it. Alek didn’t let up; the boistrous atmosphere had gotten the better of him. He prodded Strahd until his annoyance reached its boiling point. “Captain!” Strahd snapped, rounding on him with a forceful glare.

More of the table near to them stilled on hearing Strahd’s bark and turned their heads warily.

“Forgive me,” Alek said, sobering somewhat to his reproach. “I only meant to…” He paused when Strahd grasped his retreating wrist.

Strahd sighed, recomposing himself, and plucked the morsel from Alek’s fingers. “Why don’t you tell me how it tastes?” he said, bringing the food to Alek’s lips instead.

Alek glanced down at Strahd’s hands, then leveled him with a cool gaze. “Of course.”

He leaned forward and sensuously took the scrap of food into his mouth, lips closing around the tips of Strahd’s fingers. Strahd watched his jaw move as he masticated, and his throat bob when he swallowed. He felt suddenly parched.

Alek looked up at his own thoughts for a moment, wiping the corner of his mouth with a pensive finger. “It’s rich,” he said, and began to describe the texture and flavors of the dish to Strahd in earnest. While he did so, he slipped his wrist free of Strahd’s grasp and clapped his hand on Strahd’s shoulder, squeezing it amiably. He pushed his plate between them, pointing at it. “Go ahead. Try some.”

“You could be bluffing,” Strahd said, reaching for another piece. “It might taste foul.” He brought it to Alek’s amused lips.

“Would I do that to you?”

Alek ate from his hands. Their banter was ill disguised as the two men subconsciously shifted closer to each other. The others at the table were becoming thoroughly scandalized. Strahd might normally keep his feelings close to the vest, but Alek’s comparatively hedonistic inclinations were no secret and he did not bother to hide his casual seductions.

“I know you’re not much for desserts,” Alek crooned, “but at least have a bite of this.” He presented a small tart. Strahd considered it a moment, but Alek’s saliva cooling on his fingers and the heat pooling in his loins made him relinquish his restraint. He bit into the pastry, which somehow mimicked the soft give of tender flesh between his teeth. The flavor was just tantalizing enough to remind him of hunger, to make him aware that he did crave, and that his craving was not in the least satiated.

A soft moan escaped him. Alek's hand drifted down his back.

One of their number cleared their throat across the table. “Well! I think I’d better turn in. The road home won’t travel itself come morning.”

There was a bustle of people rising, then, to move toward their rooms or gather in smaller groups close to the fire. Waitresses were thanked and given a tip and a wink for their trouble.

“You will accompany me,” Strahd said, gathering his cloak surreptitiously over his arm as he rose.

One of the most Japanese BLs to release in the last decade, as weird and as messed up as any 2000s yaoi: emo af and hella warped, entirely true to itself with no attempt made to modify its POV for modern sensibilities or current BL fandom. It used seriously old school problematic and kinky tropes, like whipping boy, for a truly uncompromising piece that also manages to hit up themes of communication, consent, and self acceptance. It’s a wonderful BL but uniquely dirty and harsh, in the best possible way - Japanese cinema, uncompromising.

I lost my ever loving mind over the ending. This show won the Grand Prix “My Best TV Award” at the 16th Galaxy Awards.

Minato's Laundromat AKA Minato Shouji Coin Laundry

Japan 2022

A classic age gap romance where a high school student pursues the man of his dreams (who runs a laundromat). This BL is so steeped in yaoi nostalgia, not to mention a classic romance arc, that it will overload some, but those of us who love this genre for its DNA will adore it. It made me very happy because it did everything I want a BL to do - there’s not much more I could ask of a show than this. It’s the closest Japan has come to perfect live action yaoi since Seven Days (and I never make that comparison lightly).

My Ride

Thai 2022

Thai BL grew up with this pulp (the first ever to make my end of year top 10). It’s a truly lovely and special little show featuring the extremely rare pairing of sunshine/sunshine (AKA a cinnamon roll couple) plus mature explorations of relationships using one of the softest, sweetest, and most innocent friends to lovers vehicles. Kindly, overworked doctor meets broken-hearted motorcycle taxi driver in an “other side of the tracks” slow burn romance. The support cast is excellent, making for great friendship groups and family dynamics. With honest queer rep that adds to, but doesn’t impede, the story, and genuine conversation about the nature of class, wealth, and classism, not to mention communication, honesty, and respect for boundaries, you can’t go wrong with this show. In other news, I am a sucker for a single dimple.

Takara & Amagi AKA Takara-kun to Amagi-kun

Japan 2022 I gnawed on my knuckles and squealed a lot with this BL. Reserved cool kid who must learn to communicate to keep the tiny disaster nugget he’s madly in love with. It is beyond charming: soft and gentle, packed with cuteness and high school angst, thirst, & yearning. Was there plot? Not really. Was it emotionally tense and paced well enough for me not to notice? Absolutely. Did I enjoy the hell out of it? Oh yes.

Kiseki: Dear to Me

Taiwan 2023

The plot is totally ridiculous and slightly unhinged, but that’s normal for Taiwan. It involves all the tropes under a very casual framework of gay mafia gangs + food = love. Absolutely every character is queer. There’s a gum-ball machine of cameos, elder gay rep, great chemistry from all pairs, and a KILLER side couple. As a result Kiseki is a poster child for Taiwanese BL, and I happen to love Taiwanese BL. Bonus? They also managed to END IT WELL, which we cannot expect from Taiwan.

My Personal Weatherman AKA Taikan Yoho

Japan 2023

This style of live action yaoi really only works from Japan. Basically: boys who fell in love in college end up living together but both are so repressed they actually don't realize they're in love. It's higher heat than we usually get from Japan's HEA stuff, and that part is also very well done, but it leaned into the "why don't they just talk for fuck's sake?" trope which is only exacerbated into undiluted frustration by the fact that they're already fucking. It's great, but watching requires more patience than usual, even for Japan.

Our Dining Table AKA Bokura no Shokutaku

Japan 2023

A lonely salaryman and talented cook gets accidentally adopted by a college kid and his little brother. I was always gonna love this show if they stuck to the manga (which is very dear to my heart). And they did, paralleling it almost exactly. It’s a quiet & cozy little parable of found family alleviating loneliness. Possibly too slow for some but definitely high up there for me as the best of what Japan can do with softness (like Restart After Come Back Home). It’s only flaw (if I dare say such a thing) is that it is not really “romantic.” Lovely & sweet but the romance beats are being used to build a family relationship, not just couple intimacy, but that's OK with me. This is a very safe show for anyone to watch.

Step By Step

Thai 2023

This was Thailand’s answer to The New Employee, and everything I loved about that show I loved about this one. This office romance between a stern boss and sweet subordinate felt more authentic to cubical work than previous Thai BLs of this ilk. That authenticity added tension to the narrative and its characters development (how novel). I also really enjoyed the charming side characters and the brothers' relationship to each other (although I could have done without that brother's side BL).

Long Time No See

Korea (Strongberry) 2017

Catfishing assassins on either side of a turf war who fall in love not knowing they are on opposite sides. Or do they? Suspenseful plot, good fight sequences, mature characters, hot sexitimes and even hotter beating the shit out of each other and kissing while covered in blog (this came from KOREA?), plus an HEA. One of the hidden gems of the BL genre.

About Youth

Taiwan 2022

A truly lovely little coming of age high school BL with a classic YA low drama but high angst and an earnest depth. I didn’t even mind the singing, and that’s saying a lot. A weak seme/uke dynamic but tons of BL tropes (both rare in a high school setting but common for Taiwan) makes this one feel both sweet and colored by real world authenticity and grit.

Some of these shows ALSO appeared on Viki or iQIYI, but these BLs will appear only once on these round up posts (here for Gaga), not on the other platforms top 10.

So.... episode 6, huh. I'm just gonna be frank and say that I 100% ship the Winter King with Simon. These two old men should kiss, and I'm not about to act like I'm saying this in a joking way either. However, I do have a few things to say in regard to this ship.

Firstly, I get the people that don't ship Winterkov or say that they're joking whenever they make post about it, but there are people that do genuinely ship these two together. I get how self-shipping has gotten a bad rep due to the oncler and certain undertale shippers, but at its core, shipping is just supposed to be in good fun. Winterkov in itself is goofy in a way that's all in good fun.

If that makes you uncomfortable, that's also valid. Just don't tell me about it, and feel free to block. I don't really post on Tumblr much, but if I start to, one can possibly expect some Winterkov propaganda. Of course, the power of old man yaoi changed that.

(Warning: Disco Elysium spoilers) One of the greatest twists in all of fiction is learning that René is a fucking tsundere, and it, it really recontextualizes his interactions with Gaston, because he's not just a little gay on the side, they never say that, they say "It's him." The character dynamics kinda make me sick to think about actually, sick like when you're eating really rich cheese cake with several deep and intricate flavors, it's almost too much, it's so dense! UUUGH! Also like, Joyce, Kim, Dros, and René are all kind of equivalent to their respective ideologies right? Ultraliberal, Moralist, Communist, and Fascist. They're disillusioned soldiers of their ideology, and their respective power shows the state of that ideology, Kim is a cop who enforces the law, Joyce is very rich and influential, René is an old decaying symbol, and Dros is utterly defeated and has no hope, nearly forgotten, and they all hold some feelings and important perspectives on the revolution and the Moralintern's actions. I so badly want to write on the character dynamics, parallels, equivalents, and do deep dives on all of them and how they relate to different themes. I have some basic outlines made of scripts and stuff but like, I want to do something deeper, like a full video series even! That's what it deserves, I need to do it justice.

Like speaking of gay characters, Ruby and Klassje's relationship, and its tragic Yuri, I need to look into that. I mean she threw her under the bus! To the pigs! That is just sad! BSD: An Absurdist Analysis - Ch. 112

Fukuchi's Paradoxical End of All War

Surprisingly, there's not much to say about Fyodor's death that I haven't already said in my prior analysis posts. Dazai called his bluff, and now he's paying the ultimate consequence -- his belief that he could control an absurd reality will result in that reality destroying him.

Granted, BSD is known for its fake-out deaths. I wouldn't be entirely surprised if he somehow survives this through some miraculous ability loophole, as we've seen happen prior. But for all intents and purposes of my analysis right now, Fyodor is dead.

We then transition to the old man yaoi Fukuzawa and Fukuchi in Poe's book.

I find Fukuchi's methodology with his plan especially fascinating, because he basically become a terrorist threat to ensure that no one else will ever become a terrorist threat ever again. He knew that a society as absurd as ours would never safeguard against that type of threat unless they had been slapped in the face with it, so his plan was to almost end the whole world, but trust Fukuzawa to stop him. It's paradoxical. It's batshit crazy. And... it worked.

Put simply: in order to end world war, he had to just nearly start one. Only then would the world's institutions truly realize the threat of such an occurance. He later explains that part of fulfilling this goal involved uniting humanity so there was no "us" versus "them," just a whole "us." If there is no enemy ("them"), then there is no war, in Fukuchi's eyes.

But, as Fukuzawa points out, this simply isn't possible. In a way, Fukuchi is making a similar mistake to Fyodor -- he's trying to exercise control on mankind, and in an absurd reality, that is just literally not possible. It's illogical.

And then we've got our favorite clown Nikolai and his paradoxical relationship to Fyodor.

He wants to kill him, that's what gave his life purpose, but now that this task has been accomplished... what does he have left? I think one of the most absurd relationships of all is Nikolai's with Fyodor, how he looks up to him as the one person who understood him and how this fact makes him want to murder Fyodor. Now we see what comes of this paradox. It's sad enough that even Dazai has no witty quip and just lets it be.

ok so Jianzhu... ahhh Jianzhu... ((SPOILERS for anyone reading the Kyoshi novels))

This is Jianzhu and also like... probably one of maybe 4 canon images/art there is of him... he's not from the original cartoon he's from the Avatar Kyoshi spin-off novels that take place abt 400 yrs before the events of the show (idk how much you know abt atla lore from osmosis so this might get a little tedious? I'm just gonna explain as succinctly as possible.)

To be brief, he's a cunty old man. But unlike when I call, say, Minhkhoa a cunty old man it's not really loving ... its more like... I love to hate him. He's a REALLY good villain.

He's a politician. He made 500 people dig their own graves and then buried them alive. He beheaded his friend of like 20+ years. He drugs and kidnaps teenagers. etc. It's great.

His whole character arc is like... He's in control. You start off the book and he is very clearly in control, and he knows what he's doing, and he even sounds halfway reasonable sometimes but over the course of the novel he gets more and more desperate to grab hold of a situation that spirals wildly away from him and you get to watch it happen. His justifications for his actions get crazier, he gets sloppier and sloppier with his murders....

OH also you know how sometimes people think Bruce is some callous asshole who was only using his adoptive son who worshipped him as a weapon, and when he died he quickly sought to replace him without remorse ? Yeah he's like that but. Like actually this time. His dead adoptive son also then comes back after eating an eyeball in the spirit world (idk) and kills him by pressing a pebble through his sternum so. More successful than Jason at patricide I'd say. Look there's a lot I didn't cover, here's his wiki.

Important required reading before I explain this ship is this post. What you have to understand about Zuko is that for basically like... 40 episodes the only person he shares significant screen time with is his uncle so when him and Jet met in s2 and had a decent 3 episodes worth of interactions ... it was enough, lets just say that.

The basic Jetko timeline is they meet on a ferry while Zuko and his Uncle are disguised as refugees and they steal food together -> Jet tries to get Zuko (who he only ever knows as "Li") to join his emo band gang which Zuko refuses -> Jet sees Uncle Warcrimes heating his tea and correctly deduces that they are firebenders (ie not who they say they are; the enemy) -> Zuko and his Uncle work in a tea shop while Jet stalks them and steals things from their house and watches them from behind clotheslines (yeah) -> Jet confronts them in the teashop, sword fight, Jet gets arrested and brainwashed by the secret police (yeah) -> Jet dies under a lake which Zuko only finds out about a season later.

So they never had the 4 years of intense homoerotic cohabitation that ghostbat had,.. their chemistry and potential are pretty much instigated by a few of Jet's weird intense lines, such as "As soon as I saw your scar I knew exactly who you were - you're an outcast, like me." And the crux of the ship is like.. Jet both does and doesn't know who Zuko is.

He knows he is also angry and restless, like himself - he knows he is running from his past, like himself - and he knows he is going to Ba Sing Se to create a new identity. These things are all true, for both of them; what Jet doesn't know is that Zuko is from the imperialist nation that brutally murdered his parents and invaded his home and he incorrectly assumes that the anger he recognizes in Zuko stems from the same need to enact violence on those who have taken everything from him.

So I guess the "thought you were exactly like me but then I found out you're not which enrages and humiliates me so know I'm going to beat the shit out of you" thing from BTK no. 6 is something they share with ghostbat but.. Jet's anger is probably a little more justified than Minhkhoa's lol...

In conclusion it's your basic "doomed relationship/they work great together but that doesn't fix anything" ship premise. It used to be more popular back in the day... pretty sure I owe my life to maybe 3 different Taiwanese/Chinese doujin artists from 2009... yeah that's the gist of it.

do you feel as negatively about lesbians writing F/F fanfic as you do about the state of fanfic / how women engage with fanfic overall?

that is a fair question. fujos and (het) self-inserters are an easy target because they’re the majority of fic writers, and since most of everything is bad, there is naturally going to be a lot of really really bad man-centric fic. it’s easy to complain about them because of that. I’m sure there is also a lot of really terribly written f/f content too, very little of which touches on anything I’m actually interested in reading about. do I believe it’s literally impossible to write anything of value if you’re using other people’s characters? no, that would be absurd. but I’ll quote myself from an older, deleted blog:

“I just find it weird how fanfic, generally speaking, has homogenized to the point that in nearly every single fandom for every single book, movie, show, every genre and every medium, all have basically the same stories with the same plots and tropes no matter where you look. if you check every fandom it will be heavily weighted toward m/m, slash, yaoi, whatever the term is nowadays… and for the most part, even if explicit fic is a minority within the fandom itself, the most popular fic will always be porn or long fic that includes porn.”

“…it seems to always, in my experience, utilize a terribly pedestrian narrative style. combine that with shared tropes and source materials and the majority of fanfic has you reading the same things over and over with little variation other than maybe a different perspective. I can count on one hand the number of fics that have impressed me with experimentation! the vast majority are just… blah. blah blah. these two characters have sex. these two characters pine for each other for a really long time and then have sex.”

those posts were written a few years ago, but they’re still true. and the reasons for that are fairly simple: fanfic is, by its very nature, derivative, and the barrier to entry (publishing) is extremely low, making it easy for children + less skilled writers to throw their hats in. in addition, there is a strong, decades-old taboo against “unsolicited concrit,” which is expressed as “don’t like, don’t read.”

when you put all of these things together, what you get is a community that is A) very repetitive and B) very averse to challenging itself. that is not the recipe for genuine and raw artistic expression. it’s mass-produced unedited shit from people chasing the high of their favorite tropes. they are not interested in improving.

you have people who will admit to reading nothing but fanfic! and the people who read nothing but fanfic will go on to write more fanfic, at which point the cycle of degradation is unavoidable, because all they want is more of what fanfic offers: predictable, clearly labeled content made according to a formula that has been perfected for the broadest appeal + max kudos.

fanfic readers love tropes. they live for tropes. their “plotting” (lol), their dialogue, their characters and character dynamics are saturated with tropes. that’s why YA literature is starting to market itself on the basis of tropes - they sell! little soundbites. easy money. because fanfic readers are generally not interested in anything that might surprise them. they don’t like risk. that’s why they’re reading the same shit about the same characters over and over and over again. and these tropes, which are picked from and regurgitated into fic after fic after fic, become further and further removed from any genuine expression of human emotion. they become abstract. nonsensical. for the most part, fetish fodder. and if that is the only thing you’re reading……. It’s literally over🙁

because most fanfic is about sex or romance, because most fanfic is written by women, and because most women are heterosexual, f/f content is considerably rarer than the alternatives. writing about women does marginally broaden the scope of what fanfic is interested in/capable of exploring, but it doesn’t solve the main, underlying problem of what fanfic is and how people (mostly women) engage with it.

are there some good lesbian fanfics out there? probably! but that isn’t the norm. is it the end of the world if you read fanfic? no! but also read real books and write something original please.

hello and welcome to my twisted mind.... i'll try to condense the 10k google doc of lore into something passable here. BASICALLY all of these ww1 guys are part of a web of interconnecting stories that intersect and span before/during/after the war. the main group are the four rugby boys who live in Stirling, Scotland and are drawn into the war in 1916 following the military service act...

from left to right we've got connor, james, peter, and johnny! excuse my bad handwriting but here's the jist of their dynamics. they play rugby together before everything goes to shit (peter is captain, james is the star player, johnny is stupidly reckless, and connor keeps getting into fights) a group of good guys, if a bit rowdy. they join up with the 14th Service Battalion of the Argyll & Sutherlands and spend most of the war fighting on the western front!

two old sketches of johnny and peter..... i think these r from like spring 2022? anyway i could go into more detail about their interpersonal issues but it's a lot and i feel like that could b its own post... ultimately connor gets killed taking out a stormtrooper (another oc) and peter loses a leg about a week later. james contracts influenza and gets sent home but eventually recovers, leaving johnny to finish out the war by himself. their group is definitely not the same after the war, and peter & james in particular really struggle with ptsd in the following years.

AND THE OFFICERS. WOO. aka toxic old man yaoi aka Lt Kincaide and Lt Irvine. these two spend like three full decades being catty and hating each other before they end up getting together LOL it goes something like this: kincaide is from a wealthy family, irvine is not, they meet at school and end up going to the same military academy prewar. they rly hate each other from the beginning and would probably just be petty rivals HOWEVER. irvine is sneaking around somewhere he 1000% should not be and catches kincaide in a very compromising position w another man. irvine intends to tattle but kincaide blackmails irvine into keeping quiet- irvine is there solely on scholarship and kincaide has enough social clout to ruin his military career. basically if kincaide goes down he's taking irvine with him.

that sets the stage for a decades long contentious relationship- partially bc they just keep bumping into each other. irvine obessively tries to find ways to end kincaide's career and kincaide loooooves fucking with him. individually they're very competent people- kincaide is an especially beloved officer even if he is a bit of a romantic snob, and irvine is insanely effective if a bit rigid and cold. these guys got issues on top of issues but proximity eventually leads to a healthy rivalry that becomes something like friendship that becomes basically being married. by the end of the war they are staples in each others lives but they dont get together until a decade or so after it's all over... they each take some damage during the war and spend their later years taking care of each other :')

there is so much i could say about them individually and the deep lore but im such a horrendous writer. also this is like a quarter of all of their stuff minus about four characters. the ideal format for this story would be a 300 chapter webcomic/graphic novel but i have neither time nor skill nor attention span for such a sprawling story so it'll just be random illustrations and blurbs in the tags. and my google docs. if any of this has interested ppl i've made a rugby boy playlist and an officers playlist bc im insane. you can get the vibes of their stories a lot better.

With Rye x Espresso: Oof, this is a new one! I don’t really see many Rye pairings too often recently? So this is a very nice surprise! I can see the Yuri vibes, with one of them as an esteemed bounty hunter and the other working for the Creme Republic. Given Rye and Espresso’s personalities are relatively similar (From what I understand they both focus on their job and don’t like when others take it lightly) I can see them both meshing well together!

And with Eggnog x Dark Cacao: I can see it now- The Citadel is having one of the harshest winters for a long time, many watchers and civilians alike are huddled together inside the palace in an attempt to focus their resources in one single area to keep its residents warm. This day just so happening to fall right on Christmas Day.

I can see both silly situations and serious situations with those two! Silly old man yaoi, Sweet and Sour, very christmassy but one of them is the slightest bit of a Scrooge.
