“Roly-polys No Nanakorobi Yaoki” - a cute and strange old educational Japanese game

A little while back I learned about a series of Japanese games called "Roly Polys". Apparently the second game in the series had been thought lost to time but  a copy turned up online so people could finally archive and play/see it again. This eventually led me to looking up videos and finding a play-through of the original. It's really colorful, strange and fun game designed around helping Japanese kids learn English, using lots of little videos, stories and the occasional mini-game. The main cast consists of a bunch of silly and weird animal characters, including a villainous fox who is a huge jerk and a really cute purple ferret named George. :) The game also teaches moral fables, most of which I found to be pretty good. Also there's a peacock character named Akiko that kinda gives me transgender/queer vibes due to some things both in the game and on the Rolypolys fandom wiki.

I had watched a play-through of it on Youtube and took some screenshots of things I liked. :)

George the Ferret and Banaten the monkey share a close bond and can communicate non-verbally with each-other.It’s a sweet scene. :)

I really liked this one bit of writing. It has long been a frustration of mine when I ask someone to teach me how to do something, and instead of instructing me and letting me perform the task, they just do it for me while I watch, and I seldom learn anything.

Cho is a scary asshole fox who goes as far as even just shooting Pon, his favorite target. Thankfully due to cartoon physics, Pon survives.

Yuuichi's theme song (the one that often accompanies his entrances with "Vamos Cantar!"), 新しい夏のナナ, is not in any latin language such as Spanish or Portuguese, despite its lyrics sounding as such. It's actually in Hanamogera, which to put it simply is nonsense speech based on japanese syllables. So the song's lyrics are essentially gibberish meant to imitate the sound of latin music! 😊

It is listed as such in the source site for the song, oo39.com, where the song can be found as "YS068" in the hanamogera category.

Additional fun fact! The song can also be found in Spotify as Vien Nana by Oo39.com themselves alongside a few other select songs from the site. So you can properly enjoy the song on the platform without having to import it from your local files.

Did you know there was a Playstation 1 Escaflowne game? Here are some screenshots from a walk through of this whole game on Youtube. Has anyone played this game before, and if so what did you think? Some commenters in the Youtube video suggested that the clips in the game were from actual "lost episodes" or at least partially animated episodes axed from the TV series runtime. This is the companion piece to the “deleted scenes and video game cut scenes” video I posted a while ago. I think the graphics are very attractive for a game from the late 1990′s and authentic to the look of the anime. I wonder if Escaflowne would have been more popular if this game had been released in English around the time of the initial broadcast in North America?

#i got in some kinda rpg maker horror game zone cause i looked at my drm free games folder and i realized that uh #my rpg maker folder had like 150something games in there #dont even ask about my renpy folder and general freeware folders #my backlog is unreal #anyway i played doghouse 2 (from my general freeware folder) and that was a fun little scary/silly ps1 looking game!! #very funny and also frightening simultaneiously. awesome #then i went over to the rpg maker folder and realized i hadnt downloaded all the rtps on my new computer yet and descended into madness #but then i grabbed them and installed em all real quick (at least the english ones. i still need to grab the japanese ones rip) #and then i played a little jam game called Good Job! by ummmmm #kathinka.png is listed under my list-of-freeware-games-ive-played (weird list i keep) #that was neat it was a fun little jam game with funky conceptual stuff going on which im always a fan of #and after that i played (i think another jam game) GISELLE by yuumsarte which was very sweet #it was very classic rpg maker horror with its puzzles and level design #and the story was just very kind and uplifting in a way. i think thats the great thing about small freeware games like this #you can tell short stories with heavy subject matter with an honesty that helps make the hopeful message so much stronger #if that makes sense? my allergies have been killing me for the past two weeks so ive just sorta been embracing my wackiness #who knows what im saying. its none of my business at least
