Ok your tags on the reblog were very cool, would love to hear more about this project. Also, this is entire based on vibes of just existing in or near PA and having incredibly revisionist (and religious) history books, yeah. Sounds right.

Yeppppp! Get ready for a long answer cause i am in the thick of it! I'm pretty much a complete outsider to this topic. USA history doesn't interest me as much as ancient history does. The whole theme of the project is religious in/tolerance, and I picked Pennsylvania because my in-laws are all in Pittsburgh and I thought getting to know the state more would be fun! I've already got a pretty good background in religious history, so most of my research has been contextual colonial history. But the primary source I'm basing my project on is AWESOME. It's "Gottlieb Mittelberger's Journey to Pennsylvania" (free in the Library of Congress btw) and it's just so full of amazing information about colonial PA and how it was viewed by outsiders at the time (for Gottlieb, it was pretty godless and not worth the hype despite how beautiful the country is. He lived in Lancester county for about 4 years before returning to Germany).

The basis of my research is that in Europe, most Protestant sectarians (Quakers in particular) were seen as anti-state/anti-authoritarian. Being a dissenter was the same as being a treasonous terrorist because religion was the basis for most if not all laws and public policy within a country. So dissenters like William Penn were heavily discriminated against based on their beliefs and punished by the state as tho they were public enemies number one (spiritual danger = real danger). So quite frankly, because the America's were the place for criminals to be sent anyway, it kinda made sense to let dissenters leave and rotten themselves and their communities else where. So William Penn gets permission from his buddy King James 2 to create Pennsylvania as a "holy experiment" for liberty of conscience (and Quakers) to go. Penn advertises in England and Germany for the most part about this land of religious freedom and opportunity. With a little censure from the crown about how he sets up the colony, Penn makes it law that people can believe what they want and therefore worship and do what they want (within reason). From the outset of the colony, we have a very diverse environment full of very diverse people. No single people's settled PA, despite Quakers being a majority for a time and even when they weren't the majority they still held most of the power in the colony.

Anyway, all the secondary literature I've read all say the same thing: Penn's holy experiment was a success. Religious tolerance helped make PA economically and politically successful and set up all the American colonies for an equally successful revolution. But I've noticed that they're all ignoring, or just plain forget because 'MURICA, that the colonies were not completely separate entities from their parent country and are enabling the narrative of usa supremacy and individualism that DID NOT EXIST at the time. Individualism sure as hell did exist, but not in the sense of "im an american." It was "I'm an English Quaker" or "I'm a German Lutheran" or other ethnic or religious identification. These historians make it sound like everyone thinks PA was a great thing... but here we have over 100 pages of a German immigrant's travelog that heavily criticizes Penn's colony, telling his fellow Germans that it's just not worth the risk and they're better off at home. Obviously there's a ton more nuance to the account than I'm giving here, but the whole book is him saying "here's this bad thing, here's this good thing but here's the dark side of the good thing that isn't immediately obvious but I will explain it to you for your own good, and here's another bad thing." Most of the negativity he gives about PA in particular is religiously based: anarchy and atheism (exaggerations, but it was how he saw it as a faithful Lutheran). He tells stories of women running the show (heaven forbid!) And how the courts and laws are so lax that everybody does what they want even if theyre sued! These are seen as bad things to him, but obviously to a modern person (and to many a modern Pennsylvanian) it sounds like libertarian paradise. The idea of "success" is what I'm challenging with the Gottlieb account; we as historians are always needed to challenge the narrative. Complicate the story. The 13 colonies as a melting pot and overall success story is a good story and we use it to reinforce murican values in our public schools (something i greatly disagree with but it is what it is). But it's not the whole story and never will be. We've got the puritans in New England doing their thing and the Quakers in PA doing theirs, but what did that actually mean to people at the time? Did they see it as success? I should probably stop now haha! This is getting long. Thanks for asking about my project, it helps me articulate it for my prospectus due in a few days. ❤️❤️❤️❤️

I don't know, I just can never really get my teeth into 3Zun, I find it kind of off-putting.

favorite platonic/familial relationships: Ugh big brother LXC is so chef kiss. The way he gently ribs his stuffy baby brother and just wants him to be happy always and forever aaaargh it makes me go feral. I have been known to read fics explicitly tagged Not JGY-Friendly because I was informed they have excellent Lan brothers content, and since JGY is my poorest little meow meow, that's a big deal.

a headcanon that is popular in the fandom but that i disagree with: Himbo Lan Xichen. Like, come on, he's a sect leader, he is apparently the only person in the entire gorram Sunshot Campaign that realised that they needed a fucking spy , and he's the greatest cultivator of his generation. Come on people. You can be intelligent without being an asshole, you know. Just because he's nice and he drank his Respect Meng Yao juice every day doesn't make him a himbo (╯‵□′)╯︵┻━┻

the position they sleep in: He goes to sleep on his back in proper Lan posture, but he wakes up cuddling his blankets and/or sprawling so as to occupy maximum real estate.

a crossover au i’d love to see them in :SVSSS would be great, because he could use a magic mushroom to make A-Yao a non-dead body, but idk I kind of want him to cross over into like, the most mundane cozy romance you've ever seen in your life? Like, I would like to read a story where literally nothing bad happens ever at all. It was supposed to stay a secret, but once the other couple found out, they decided they might as well roll with it. They didn’t have anyone else who could know.

Lan Wangji and Nie Huaisang were somewhat used to their older brother showing them off and praising them to other people.

Even more when Nie Mingjue and Lan Xichen were somewhat fighting to see which of the two was better. They did not exactly expect for it to go all the way to when they are in bed!

Yet here they were, being fucked by their respective brother, so they could show off just how cute and good they were. It was a bit embarrassing at first, being displayed like this as nmj and lxc kept on arguing somehow.

But nhs and lwj were only fascinated by the way the other would react to their brother’s touch, slowly leaning towards one another.

Maybe their brothers wanted to argue, but they wanted to have some fun and if they were not going to give them full attention, they would help themselves.

Lwj was a bit shy at first to touch nhs, as he never really touched anyone else but himself and his older brother, so it was new than to figure out what nhs would like. Nhs was a bit less shy, mirroring some of the action lxc had done before.

It was not too long before the younger pair was getting more heavily with each other, slowly starting to kiss too. Lwj actually really liked kissing other people now that he was experiencing it with someone else, not only his brother was nice to kiss.

“A-Zhan, are you forgetting about me?” asked lxc when he noticed what they were doing, bending over a bit to come and steal his brother’s lips from nhs. “xiongzhang” called out lwj, letting him do whatever he wanted.

“Look at him, stealing your new friend” nmj commented in a whisper, hugging nhs close to his chest as they watch them get into their own bubble. Nhs would not have that, he had lwj first this time while lxc was busy fighting with nmj.

He quickly went back to lwj, stealing him away, not surprised to feel nmj shift and go forward with him as they got closer to the other pair, nhs finally nearly flush against lwj. He kissed him again, this time more deeply, hand roaming over him, chasing where he had quickly learned would make lwj make cute sounds.

Soon the older pair looked at their younger sibling getting closer to each other and really neither could be mad at this, it was nice to see them so close.

But soon it felt like they were being forgotten too!! So, they became fiercer in their movement, finally gaining back their respective brother's attention.

This had started as a fight to see which of them was the cutest, they did not expect to get out of it with both lwj and nhs closer than before. Maybe they could organise this again so the boy would have some more fun together.

lance has been in love with este for as long as he has known him. he knew este would never love him back though, with them being so different from each other. plus este was already taken. lance didn't even know where he stood anymore, elena was the love of his life and while este may be his best friend, the knot in his stomach said that este's best friend was now mick. the bitter thing was that he introduced them and it was all well in the beginning, they were thee trio, until he dropped down to tie his shoelaces properly and found out that they both had moved on already without a single glance back, too busy in their bubble to notice his absence. he couldn't give up on este that easily though, not when he was the only one in his life who had made a true effort in getting to know the actual him and the small but dark part of him was kind of glad mick was out of a seat, maybe he had a chance to get his place back afterall. so that found him loitering outside of the 6th floor of hotel magnus, where alpine had booked out every room. he was just gathering the courage to go knock on este's door when another door opened, and out stepped pierre. he got along well with pierre, they always indulged in a game of padel every few months and made sure to catch each other up on every paddock gossip.

he pretended his heart didn't break when pierre mentioned that este was out with elena and maybe that was what made him accept pierre's offer of getting a few drinks in his room

before he knew it, he ended up pouring his heart out to pierre, who confessed his own one sided love with charles. the next day, he woke up with a new "how to move on" plan, a newfound determination and a friends with benefits arrangements with the teammate of his crush.

pierre had always known he was in love with charles, even when he was 7 years old and knew nothing about love or 27 years old and knew about love but nothing of love. somedays he pretended he and charles had drunkenly agreed to get married if they were both single in their 30s but he knew he'd never say that outloud because charles deserved better. but he also knew nobody could love charles more than he did.

he knew it was love when a 12yr old charles ran his car off the road in the video game they were playing and he just pretended to be enraged before tackling charles and tickling him until he couldn't breathe, both of them too out of breath but still laughing. the knowledge of him chewing out este for doing the same thing a year prior, having an actual argument with the seriousness only 13yr olds can muster over little things. he liked to think it was because he matured in one year but he knew it was just because he liked charles' smile too much to ever be angry at it

it was too late though.

all his life, pierre had done everything. he was the partner in crime whenever tween them got in mischief, he was the encouraging friend when charles whispered that he might like boys too and if it's okay, he was the supportive shoulder when charles lost someone he shouldn't have, he was the ear when charles started out in f1 and struggled the first three races, he was the person in his corner when charles had the weight of the world ferrari on his shoulders, the drunk buddy when he broke up with charlotte, he was there for everything! but he refused to be just the best friend while charles fell in love with someone else though.

what was worse though, was that charles was falling in love with a man and it wasn't pierre. pierre wasn't naive enough to think charles was a virgin, he knew he had had hookups with men in the past but he just couldn't take charles dating a man too and then falling in love with him and getting married and having 10 fat babies. he couldn't, not when he would be forever haunted by how it could have been him if he was anyone but who he was.

the man in question was an engineer at ferrari, recently transferred from alfa romeo because of his brilliance, known by the name emil and known for his niceness. He had seen the looks emil had given charles, had seen charles blush at the attention, had seen the secret smiles they shared. he wrote everything off though, until he once let himself in charles' hotel room and found a bouquet of red roses on the side table and a "with love, emil" note attached to it. emil better treat charles right but pierre needn't worry too much, he knew the other ferrari engineers would tear emil apart if he was ever anything but a good boyfriend to charles.

he'd still be the best friend but he refused to stand by and watch charles falling in love with a man that wasn't him.

it was these haunting thoughts that led to him running into lance and making the perfect arrangement, to "move on" from charles and having someone who truly understood what he was feeling.................
