2018 Big 12 Coaching Power Rankings

The Big 12 had a pretty nice rebound season in 2017. The previous couple of years weren’t nice to the league but it was certainly on the rise. Some of this certainly has to do with the infusion of coaching talent alongside the old standbys. Of course, Bob Stoops is no longer around, but his successor appears to be filling his shoes just fine.

10. David Beaty

Record at Kansas: 3-33

Movement: Same

Look, coaching Kansas is hard, but this isn’t going well by any metric. The Jayhawks stink and don’t appear to be improving. I don’t know how long Beaty is going to last. I hope he can figure it out, but I’m very skeptical at this point.

9. Matt Rhule

Record at Baylor: 1-11 Record Overall: 29-34

Movement: Down 1 spot

Baylor completely collapsed in Matt Rhule’s first season. I think he can build them back up, he led Temple successfully after all, but to bring them back to Briles levels will be very difficult. At least they’ll never be as bad as Kansas.

8. Tom Herman

Record at Texas: 7-6 Record Overall: 29-10

Movement: Up 1 Spot

Tom Herman’s first season at Texas went alright. The Longhorn defense got its act together towards the end of the year, which bodes well for next season. I think that Herman can do a good job in Austin. I’m not sure how good of a coach he actually is, I think a lot of his success in Houston was due to him inheriting a lot of talent, but with the right pieces in place I’ll probably be proven wrong.

7. Lincoln Riley

Record at Oklahoma: 12-2 Conference Championships: 1 (2017)

Movement: N/A

One year, one Big 12 Championship and a berth in the Playoff. Not too shabby. Lincoln Riley inherited a full cupboard at a national powerhouse program, so I won’t put him up too high to start out with, but he’s clearly got a good thing going so far. Riley is a great offensive mind and I think he’s going to rise up this list very quickly.

6. Kilff Kingsbury

Record at Texas Tech: 30-33

Movement: Same

Kingsbury is in a weird spot. He’s clearly not in the running to crack the top 5, those coaches appear to have a certain quality he doesn’t possess, and I think pretty soon he’ll be passed up by at least a few guys below him. Still, I’m not sure if he’s a bad coach. Texas Tech is a weird program and if they had a decent defense they could compete with basically everybody. That’s all on Kingsbury, let’s see if he can make it happen.

5. Matt Campbell

Record at Iowa State: 11-14 Record Overall: 46-29

Movement: Up 2 spots

Iowa State has won 8 games for the first time since 2000 and it’s all thanks to Matt Campbell. The Cyclones were one of the breakout teams of 2017 and their crowning achievement was being the only team to knock off Oklahoma in regulation, in Norman no less. Cambell’s hire seems to be going very well for ISU and I hope he keeps things rolling.

4. Dana Holgorsen

Record at West Virginia: 53-37 Conference Championships: 1 (2011)*

*Big East Championship

Movement: Up 1 spot

Holgorsen moves up mostly because Bob Stoops retired and left a hole at the top of the list. Holgorsen feels like a better Kliff Kingsbury in the sense that he doesn’t appear to be taking West Virginia to where they want to be in terms of competing in the conference every year, but they have a high floor (higherthan the Red Raiders at least).

3. Mike Gundy

Record at Oklahoma State: 114-53 Conference Championship: 1 (2011)

Movement: Up 1 spot

Mike Gundy is rolling at Oklahoma State. The Cowboys have gone 10-3 for the past 3 years. Oklahoma State is in the conference race every season and if they get one or two more pieces they’ll be winning the league and going for the Playoff. The Cowboys have never been this good this long, and Gundy is fully responsible.

2. Gary Patterson

Record at TCU: 160-57 Conference Championships: 6 (2002, 2005, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2014)*

*CUSA/MWC/Big 12 Championships

Movement: Up 1 spot

Gary Patterson and Bill Snyder are basically 1A and 1B as far as I’m concerned. Patterson has done an amazing job building TCU into a great program. The Horned Frogs are competitive in the conference nearly every year. They made the new Big 12 Championship Game in its first season and have won 11 games three of the last four years.

Record at Kansas State: 210-110-1 Conference Championships: 2 (2003, 2012)

Movement: Up 1 spot

YES!!! Now that Bob Stoops has retired I can finally put Bill Snyder at the #1 spot in the Big 12. It’s fantastic and there’s no worthier person in college football to be celebrated. Snyder is a legend and every season Kansas State goes 8-5 is historically significant. He’s college football’s wonderful grandpa and you’ve gotta love him.
