Poisson D’Avril!
It’s April Fools’ Day, and you know I can’t resist the chance to make some quirky holiday art! They call it Poisson D’Avril, or ‘April Fish’ in France. No now knows exactly why, but I won’t complain about a reason to illustrate! I chose a European Sturgeon for this piece because they’re a very important and critically endangered species. Here are some facts about them:
- They are the rarest sturgeon in the world.
- One single wild population exists in the Garonne and Dordogne rivers in France, but in former times they’ve been documented in many other places including the Atlantic, the English Channel, the Mediterranean, and the Black Sea.
- Globally 85% of sturgeon species are threatened with extinction, rendering them the most endangered species group in the world, according to IUCN.
- They are diadromous, meaning they live in fresh AND salt waters!
- They can live to be over 100 years old, grow up to 16 feet long, and weigh up to 770 pounds!
- Today sturgeons are referred to as living dinosaurs as their lineage dates back to over 200 million years ago!

Final for Platybelodon grangeri.
P. grangeri was an extinct member of the Proboscidea order that lived during the Miocene Epoch, 15 to 10 million years ago; they were a prehistoric relative to modern day elephants. Members of their genus have been found in across parts of Africa, Asia, and the Caucasus.
Their distinctive lower teeth were once thought to have been used like shovels, allowing the animal to scoop large amounts of aquatic plants into it's mouth, but recent analysis of microscopic damage shows patterns closer to those of animals that use their teeth to strip bark from trees or cut tougher terrestrial plants. It's thought they used their trunks to hold such plants in place while using their teeth as a kind of built in scythe.

Take me on tiptoes into the dark. Caress the essence from beneath my skin - leave your mark - in the places where we begin. Haunt me in silence - twist the truth - wander this world looking for proof. Slip between the skin of alive and deceased - let your soul falter until you accept peace - until I’m released. Pandora once let me out for you to ravage the worlds in my mouth. ‘Cause hope - it filters a trickle of truth into an obsidian cave suckling the absence of youth. © 2023 Stephany Moeller #love #loss #trauma #poetrycommunity #art #chronicillness #keepgoing #underwoodtypewriter #typewriterpoetry #maineartist #stephanymoeller #crimsononshatteredglass (at Owls Head, Maine) https://www.instagram.com/p/CqJoCXus_mX/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

And here’s the fourth and final painting of critically endangered species that I turned into calendar pages! This is a Vaquita, a species of porpoise! I also turned all the illustrations and facts I compiled into a zine that I posted a while back!

Roughly 300 million years ago during the Late Carboniferous the world as we know it was quite different; there were no mammals, no dinosaurs, reptiles as a group were still new. There was only one continent, Pangaea, much of which was covered in huge swamp laden forests. Primitive amphibians dominated the waterways while the land was ruled by super sized bugs. The abundance of plant life during this time is thought to have lead to higher than normal oxygen content in the atmosphere, with levels peaking at 35%, compared to the relatively low levels of today of only 21%. Given that many arthropods do not have lungs and instead absorb oxygen through a series of tube-like structures called trachea. These tubes are spread throughout their bodies, the larger those bodies are the less efficient this system is at absorbing enough oxygen. With oxygen levels being higher during the Carboniferous it is thought that this was the major contributing factor to the increased size of invertebrates during that time. The only flying animals at this time were insects, the largest by far being Meganeura monyi, a relative of modern day dragonflies. Like it's modern day cousins it was a predator, feeding on other insects and small reptiles and amphibians. It's likely that they would dive bomb unsuspecting prey and trap them with spiny structures on their legs. Fossil specimens of Meganeura have been found with wingspans reaching upward of 28 inches, meaning that the largest members of this group would be about the same width as your average door frame. A special, life-sized, version of this is now available on my Patreon for members at the $1 tier and up. https://www.patreon.com/posts/67141694
