The 2018 film 'A Wrinkle in Time' is based on a novel of the same name by which author?

'A Wrinkle in Time' is a 2018 science fantasy film based on the 1962 young adult novel of the same name by Madeleine L'Engle. The film stars Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, Mandy Kaling, Chris Pine, Storm Reid and Deric McCabe. After learning her astrophysicist father (Pine) is being held captive on a distant planet, Meg Murry (Storm Reid) works with her highly intelligent younger brother (McCabe) and three astral travellers, Mrs. Which, Mrs. Whatsit and Mrs. Who (Winfrey, Witherspoon and Kaling), to rescue him.

Madeleine L'Engle (1918-2007) was an American author who won the Newbery Medal, the Sequoyah Book Award and the Lewis Carroll Shelf Award for 'A Wrinkle in Time'. L'Engle wrote several sequels to the book, 'A Wind in the Door' (1973), 'A Swiftly Tilting Planet' (1978), 'Many Waters' (1986), and 'An Acceptable Time' (1989). All her works tended to reflect L'Engle's Christian faith and her strong interest in modern science.

The 2018 version of 'A Wrinkle in Time' won the St. Louis Film Critics Awards for Worst Film of 2018. Critics complained of an overambitious use of computer-generated imagery and several plot holes. On the other hand, the producers were praised for including black actors in leading roles. The 'New Pittsburgh Courier' stated the film "continues to make lasting impressions on innocent minds to change what it looks like to be a young black woman".

A Wrinkle in Time: Review

Rating: ★★★

The novel A Wrinkle in Time was written by Madeleine L’Engle in 1962. Despite being a Newbery Medal winning book, this fantasy novel has been challenged throughout time for a variety of reasons. After her father disappears, young Meg Murry, her brother and friend Charles Wallace goes on a mission through space and time to rescue her father from the evil antagonist, “IT”. The trio encounter a variety of eccentric characters along the way, travelling through time and space in order to complete their quest. A Wrinkle in Time takes readers on a vividly depicted journey where reality and fantasy collide and has been created quite a stir since the beginning of its release.

This is a story that inspires readers to use their imaginations and defy expectations. The fast-paced story and complex language has also been a topic of issue for this book. A Wrinkle in Time explores many different worlds, themes and concepts throughout its 202 pages. During the 1960’s, women’s roles and placement were beginning to evolve from but there was still a large pushback on women being the forefront. The main protagonist Meg Murry in the story is a young girl who, despite setbacks, enemies and challenges, fulfills her quest to find her father. Despite being described as “plain”, Meg shows that she is extraordinary. Meg is seen as an intelligent, strong willed young woman who is willing to do whatever it takes for her family. This major theme gives A Wrinkle in Time the diving force to still be relevant today.

Black Dynamite (2009)

Black Dynamite is a American blaxploitation action comedy film starring Michael Jai White, Tommy Davidson, and Salli Richardson. The film was directed by Scott Sanders and co-written by White, Sanders, and Byron Minns, who also co-stars.

The plot centers on former CIA agent Black Dynamite, who must avenge his brother’s death while cleaning the streets of a new drug that is ravaging the community. The film is a parody of and homage to the blaxploitation genre and its era. It had a trailer and funding even before a script was written. Black Dynamite was shot in 20 days in Super 16 format.

In the early 1970s, Black Dynamite, a Vietnam War veteran and former CIA officer, vows to clean up the streets of drug dealers and gangsters after his younger brother Jimmy is killed by a shady organization. O’Leary, Black Dynamite’s former army and CIA partner, reinstates him into the agency because they do not want him seeking vengeance by himself. While trying to get to the bottom of Jimmy’s murder, he finds out that his brother was actually working undercover for the CIA. Black Dynamite also discovers the shady organization is filling the black orphanages with heroin. He declares war on local drug dealers and successfully cleans up the streets, earning him the affection of Gloria, a Black Power activist who works at the local orphanage.

After discovering the government’s involvement in the drug ring, Black Dynamite steals the ledger belonging to corrupt Congressman James which details illegal shipments to a warehouse. Black Dynamite and his team storm the warehouse to capture a big shipment.

TWO / birthday. November 21

THREE / zodiac sign. Scorpio, right on the Sag cusp. (Aquarius Moon, Aquarius rising)

FOUR / height. 5′3.5″ and I have dysphoria about it every day lol

FIVE / hobbies. Long-distance cycling, I have an old hybrid Kona bike that has treated me amazingly well considering the abuse it takes. I bought it in like 2006, left it outside buried in snow for a whole winter, and I’ve never even replaced the chain. I also like art and sometimes I do a fanfic.

SIX / favourite colors. Blue, and I haven’t wavered on this since grade 3.

SEVEN / favourite books. Robertson Davies’ The Cunning Man, Dostoevsky’s The Idiot, Donna Tartt’s The Secret History, Robert Graves’ I, Claudius, Rosemary Sutcliff’s The Eagle of the Ninth (speak not to me of the movie), Amos Oz’s To Know a Woman, C.S. Lewis’ Till We Have Faces, and Flann O’Brien’s At Swim-Two-Birds.

EIGHT / last song listened to. Lloyd and Claudette, Queen of the World

NINE / last film watched. ...It has been a really long time since I watched a “film” rather than stand-up specials or miniseries or Youtubers. I think it was The Cured, a pretty forgettable Irish zombie movie.

TEN / inspiration for muse. Confession: I’ve never been completely sure what fandom means by “muse.” It’s always been a term that was used by circles that I wasn’t in, for whatever reason. Does it mean favourite character? Favourite viewpoint to write? (maybe I just don’t think Richard Hendricks deserves the same title as a daughter of Zeus tbh)

ELEVEN / dream job. I like being a freelance writer but uhh it sure would be cool if that paid me a livable income!

TWELVE / meaning behind your url. Dr. Louise Colubra is a minor character in Madeleine L’Engle’s A Wind in the Door. Because coluber means a kind of snake in Latin, the Murry twins name their pet snake after her. It doesn’t have much significance outside of (1) snakes are cool, and (2) I like writing about medicine and the way doctors and patients relate to one another.

Old friends

Anthony Cain (that photo looked almost completely nothing like young Jake Busey) and Alphonso MacKenzie were roommates in the SHIELD academy. And then Tony was kicked out because he was too busy getting stuff to people to attend class. And now he runs stuff like Project Paperclip for HYDRA scientists. And is not evil. And helps the team to save the day. And is completely in awe by flying ships and frighting robots. Also great taste in aliases - Lewis Casalino, Murry Jacobson, William Pratt, Gene Kline, Marion Cobretti. I hope he comes back with info on Hale and her plans.

Candy Man and Mack Hammer. Because one could get you anything and the other loved MC Hammer in high school. And thus the best references of the episode were “can’t touch this” gravitonium and “it’s hammer time” to kill robots. Because Mack might’ve been against violence but the world and people need saving now and he has his shotgun axe. And not even combined forces of heights drowning and robots can stop him from getting arms for his beloved. This is the level of caring even Elena can’t find annoying.

With everyone dotting on both of them it’s sometimes too much but it’s hard to not be able to help. Still there is only so much people can do. They can promise prosthetics but Coulson can’t lie - it’s not going to be the same. And trauma doesn’t go away either. Elena’s made worse by the feeling of the inevitability of the future. This is one fear that can’t be shot and dispersed. Not even Jemma can make it better. And Yo-Yo might not be wrong. Coulson wants them to let him die. He doesn’t want to go all Garett - no more unnatural life extensions. But Daisy wants to save him at all costs and old Elena warned against it. Is this how she destroys the world? Not with her powers but trying to save Coulson?
