Armand Hammer, billy woods, E L U C I D, JPEGMAFIA - Woke Up and Asked Siri How I'm Gonna Die
As somebody who enjoys JPEGMAFIA's production immensely this song is an absolute treat. JPEGMAFIA handles production while E L U C I D and billy woods take the center stage with lyrics and delivery.
The highlight here is billy woods' verse, which has some clever wordplay involving steak and raw meat and some equally inventive rhyme-schemes (e.g. "brain fog" and "chainsaw"). However, billy's verse is as descriptive and immersive as it is technically advanced (reminiscent of his work on Maps earlier this year), and this alone sets him apart from other rappers who only focus on technical ability. Good shit.

Earl Sweatshirt, MIKE - Sentry
Earl Sweatshirt comes back with a pretty standard song aping the minimalist charm of Some Rap Songs and Feet of Clay. The Alchemist beat contains a stripped down, repetitive loop not dissimilar to that on Shattered Dreams, but Earl's pen game leaves a lot of room for improvement.
I say this as a fervent Earl Sweatshirt defender, who loved every album and EP up through Feet of Clay, but his underwhelming return with SICK! left a bad taste in my mouth. Maybe I began noticing the cracks in his facade, as his esoteric style of rapping and the symbolism in his lyrics started to feel more lazy than despondent and reflective.
MIKE's verse felt more substantive upon the first few listens, but between the two rappers there are very few quotables or memorable moments on this cut. The full project has been released as an NFT, which also isn't the best look in 2023. Still I'll save my judgement until I hear the project in its entirety.

Jake the Underdog, Glitch Gum - FRIEND REQUEST
Glitch Gum's style of hyperpop infused pop punk is beginning to sound less novel and cutting edge and more like a rehash of 2000s pop punk. This song would fit snugly on an early Wonder Years record, as the synth lead and power chord guitar riffs are as saccharine as anything you'd hear off of Get Stoked on It!
If Glitch Gum wants to work within the confines of the genre that's not a bad idea on paper, I absolutely adore the Get Up Kids and Motion City Soundtrack and they have somewhat similar styles. The distinction for me is that Justin Pierre and Matt Pryor are much better lyricists. The nasal vocal affectation used and the cheeky lyrics consisting solely of video game references do absolutely nothing for me on this song. Maybe it'll do more for you.

Summer just in time for Summer
"Pull up" giving a modern day Erykah Badu vibe... one of my favorites on this new EP... in my eyes, Summer Walker never dissapoints. This new EP is literally just in time for Summer... presenting songs you can both soak up the sun to, and relate to. As usual, Summer bares her soul in this one... and I enjoy the fact the fans got to hear Summer talk in Agayu's Revelation, which gave us a feel of her personality... making this EP more personable. All in all, this EP feels like a cool, melodic, poetic, picnic under the Summer sun. Childish Gambino delivered in "New Type" reminding his fans of his lyrical, chill abilities... Jcole's heart felt message to Summer was heartwarming and sincere. Simply put, This EP is full of vibes with a hint of poetry and a lot of melodies worth nodding your head to. I've always loved how honestly Summer pours her heart into her music... which will always make her a relatable artist, feeling like that friend you sit on the balcony with and have real conversations about life, and what we face as young women. This EP makes you want to throw on your most alluring robe with a cup of tea by noon. I'll always support Summer and her honesty, pen game, and raw talent. What's your favorite song on the new Clear 2, Soft Life EP?

‘This is Why’
Tumblr media
Paramore’s newest release This Is Why, might just be the best Paramore album to date. Don’t get me wrong – I love their old, emo music. Like many little emo children back in the 2000’s, Paramore dominated much of my listening; from the second I heard Misery Business, I was hooked. Being the type of person who is incredibly resistant to change, I personally did not find their Paramore album much to my taste – for me, I felt it strayed too far from the Paramore I knew and loved. It didn’t stop me from listening to After Laughter of course, but again, I just did not see Paramore in the songs. To me, those two albums are almost a crossroad for the band – they were exploring and trying to re-invent and find themselves as a band after so much conflict between the members. Some wonderful songs from these albums still – Part II, (One of Those) Crazy Girls; Pool and Idle Worship to name my favourites – but as an overall, to me, it just wasn’t what I saw Paramore to be.
Hayley’s self-titled album, on the other hand, was truly a masterpiece. Petals for Armour was what I listened to on repeat in the first covid-19 lockdown – her pain and anger, brought out so beautifully with her magnificent vocals, truly showcased an unmatched talent. Sudden Desire, Roses/Lotus/Violet/Iris, and Crystal Clear, display her vocal range and musical abilities to their highest form. Petals for Armour was such a step away from Paramore, and especially the Paramore I was used to – leading to a wondering of what this meant for the band’s future.
Their first single since After Laughter, This is Why, again took a step in another direction. You can see the elements of Paramore and After Laughter within the song, yet still brings a completely new era into the equation. I wasn’t sure what to expect with the album – with the accompanying singles of The News and C’est Comme Ça, I was expecting a newer, improved era of their 2013 and 2017 albums. What has been produced, however, is something entirely different. This is Why, is that perfect blend of Hayley’s solo projects, and Paramore as a band – Figure 8, especially, for me, is the perfect example of such. The lyrics, raw, emotional vocals and the accompanying music mesh perfectly, combining Hayley’s solo work exploration, and Paramore’s new era.
I saw a tweet (@tinyhottopicbish) upon release date, suggesting listening to Pool, Crystal Clear and Liar in a sequence. The way the songs flow into each other, across the span of three sperate albums, made me second guess my initial reactions to Paramore and After Laughter. It is almost as if a plan was truly made – perhaps this was always the route Paramore was to go. I’ll re-iterate that I am not a fan of change – when My Chemical Romance’s Danger Days album was released, I was almost hurt by the drastic change in their tone and mood. Paramore's 2013 album brought about the same reaction. But we all must grow up and mature at some point, and Paramore’s evolution is clearly one for the better. This is Why, is a wonderful example of such maturity: it is different but holds elements of their roots still at heart. It has made me re-think my emotions on their 2013 and 2017 albums, and although they will never be my favourite of their six albums, This is Why may have overtaken Brand New Eyes, and I am so excited to see what the future holds for Paramore.

DVSN morning after feels like a somber Saturday
Sitting listening to Morning After by DVSN, I realize this artist is the defintion of real R&B. Giving you poetry... visuals with words. Making you feel every lyric in the inner most parts of anything inside you that you deem as art. I picture fresh white sheets midst a morning LA sun. This is a song you listen to during an evening drive with the windows down. If you haven't listened to DVSN... you should get on that. Feed your soul some love today.

Meredith O'Connor embraces her unique qualities in her album, "I Am"
Anti-bullying/mental health icon Meredith O'Connor is a role model to her fans around the world. Millions of people adore her music, and several of her followers have claimed that it helped them survive hardships like bullying and social isolation. Henceforth, the release of her album, "I Am" is primarily about overcoming obstacles and embracing one's individual qualities. It was released on Friday 23 October 2015.
Tumblr media
Bullying is a topic that Meredith is incredibly passionate about since it is so personal to her. Meredith has travelled the nation as an anti-bullying crusader, speaking at schools about her own experiences being tormented in addition to her musical performances.
Meredith acknowledges that she has battled with bullying since she was young age 6, but she gives no further details, other than to claim that she has experienced abuse and taunting for being "weird," for being different, and for not conforming to stereotypes. She claims that one of the things that has set her apart from her friends is the fact that she always gravitated toward the theatre and performing arts extracurriculars in high school, never sports. She also noted that she is special,
“I wish I could tell kids that if you wait 2, maybe 3 more years, none of this will matter, and it will be the things that make you different that end up making you cool." Meredith O' Connor
She wanted to let everyone know that it is okay to be different. We often compare our lives to others and sometimes we try to copy them. We often ask ourselves if there is something wrong with being yourself but as we will see throughout the album, Meredith was brave enough to share her uniqueness with the world.
The Track List highlights her unique qualities.
One of my favorite songs is I Am. The song is catchy and upbeat mixed with a fast-paced piano instrument playing throughout the song. Moreover, the song is about Meredith realizing that she does not have to compromise who she is for anyone. She has learned to embrace who she is. Her light vocals throughout the song reflect that. For instance, in the lyrics, she says:
"So tired of being on my best behaviour / Tryna be what they all love.."
She changes her tone towards the bridge of the lyrics. Her vocals sort of become deep and powerful. Furthermore, she is starting to see that she doesn't need to change who she is hence why she says in the bridge of the lyrics:
"All of my life this is the key to what I’m missing /Throw out the doubt, forget all the second-guessing / All of my flaws I see them as a blessing / I’ll be who I am not what they are expecting"
Throughout the track, Meredith proves that she is indeed who she is hence the repetition of the phrase, "I am, I am, I am, what I am". Personally, I Am serves as a good intro for the album because it sets the tone for the album which is embracing unique qualities.
Meredith 0'Connor donated all her proceeds from the album to The Carol Galvin Foundation a women's cancer organisation. The song, "Guardian Angel" is written explicitly for the foundation as stated by Richard Galvin on LinkedIn. He is the founder of the organisation. Furthermore, the foundation is in honour of his mother, whom he lost to cancer when he was 11. As a result, the song, "Guardian Angel" is another significant track in the album. Musical instruments such as a piano and violin playing in the background set the tone to be deep. Meredith presents her calm and simple vocals as she sings in the chorus:
"Whenever I think of you and I smile and I don’t know why / Whenever I feel joy in my heart, I know you’re nearby / And I know you’re here to stay / Your love won’t ever fade away / You give me wings to fly / You’re my guardian angel in the sky / You’re my guardian angel tonight"
As she sings, it gives everyone a chance to remember their loved ones.
youtube
Another track that caught my attention is "Just the Thing". Meredith O'Connor opens up a lot more about her character. For instance, in the lyrics, she said:
"I'm awkward / A little OCD / I'm too tall / And always say just the wrong thing / I talk too fast, forget to breathe..."
Meredith decides to open up more about her mental health, OCD. Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a mental and behavioural disorder in which a person experiences intrusive thoughts (an obsession) and the need to repeatedly engage in certain behaviours (compulsions) to alleviate the distress that the obsession causes, to the point where it impairs daily functioning. Meredith is an advocate for mental health so this song makes it even more significant to listen to. Not to mention, the song is sweet and short to listen to.
youtube
Face That’s Perfect is also a nice track to listen to. The lyrics are also easy to understand as well.
Stronger was a meaningful track to listen to. There was a musical chemistry between Meredith O’Connor and Garret Clayton. However, I don’t see myself playing it daily but just hear and there.
Songs such as Distraction, 14 Miles and Unforgettable Night seem to be worthy tracks to listen to. As a first-time listener, I will need time to appreciate the tracks.
The Game was all right. However, I felt like something was missing. Plus, I kind of got lost in understanding the meaning of the track especially since it was my first time listening to the track.
In a nutshell, I Am is a significant album to listen to. It highlights the unique qualities Meredith O'Connor has. As an anti-bullying/mental health icon, I believe she managed to highlight the messages she wanted to send to her listeners. Songs such as I Am were worthy to listen to. Other songs such as The Game were all right to listen to. Therefore, I would rate the album around 6.5 / 10.

undescores - Old money bitch
The narrative on this song really beats out any competition. The nuanced portrayal of an obscenely privileged little princess who wants punk cred, one who shoplifts and dyes her own hair to fit in. I love that this titular "Old Money Bitch" is not an effigy to privilege, but rather a somewhat layered character who feels overshadowed by their parents accomplishments while perpetually unable to escape and live a normal life. Her frivolous and misguided attempts to fit in make her stand out more as an untouchable little shit, and the ambiguity about underscores relationship to the character (as a purely fictional character study, somebody they knew irl or a self insert) in a World that wants to tear down "industry plants" makes the song's dance with danger one worth exploring across numerous listens.
Tumblr media
awakebutstillinbed - airport
Admittedly, the mix on this song isn't perfect. However, I have to recognize the amazing songwriting and lyrics. This song is raw as hell, and Shannon Taylor can still scream like a banshee murdering her fears. The lyrics at the end about not recognizing yourself hit me hard, maybe I can relate more to them than I'd like to admit. Overall, this heart wrenching little song was one of my favorites this week, and I'm eagerly awaiting this new album!

The Menzingers - Hope is a Dangerous Little Thing
The Menzingers have a tendency to sound a bit constipated on their more anthemic tracks (looking at you "America (You're Freaking Me Out)"), but the band also tends to shine when writing simpler songs. The concept on this track is broad but very relatable, and it's not hampered by some generic-as-Muse political gesturing. Hope is a dangerous thing indeed.
Tumblr media
blackwinterwells, FloodDubs - Glass Cannon
This newest song from blackwinterwells sounds pretty dry and faceless, as if to be buried in a playlist with thousands of similar songs. I guess I'm not surprised the sound and structure of 2012 dubstep is coming back in 2023, I just wish blackwinterwells incorporated this signature sound with their own (and didn't eschew personality).
Tumblr media
Eyedress, Mac DeMarco - The Dark Prince
Zzzz....
Worst
Tumblr media
The Streets - Too Much Yayo
It's been diminishing returns for the Streets since Original Pirate Material, but this is a new low. The farty synth and drill 808s make for a strange instrumental, and the horrible singing makes this a worst song of the year contender for me. Mike Skinner, lay off the yayo.

Don't get too high...
Tumblr media
When Bryson first came out, he had a way with his words in such a way where he made just about every female fan and listener feel as though they lived in a penthouse in LA graced in lace curtains, and aesthetic furniture with the only care in the world being what latte to drink for the day... The main character of her world parading around as either an aspiring model, designer, or make up artist. lol. Bryson had a way with words (and still does) in such a way where your soul urged for his lyrical, story telling music to become a binge worthy TV series that took you away from everyday life and caused you to dwell in the dialogue and pick a favorite character to grow with. "Don't get too high." will always be one of my favorite songs by Bryson for so many reasons. I've always been a fan of Bryson's vulnerability in his music. The song margins a young lady he is clearly smitten by... in such a way where you begin to imagine the aura and aesthetic of this young lady for Bryson to vulnerably bare his soul the way he does in the song.
Its clear this young lady is in a city that never sleeps, a city some vacation to while most dwell in. He urges her not to get "too high" and goes on to serenade her smoothly... "I'm the only drug you need to get you through it." As a writer who is also visual... the lyrics are fun, a bit sensual... But at the same time, telling of many beautiful women who tend to pull off the alluring aesthetic while deep down inside... needing substances to cope. The melodic tune is a tune you can both ride to on a late chill night... and relate to. We've all had late nights where the drinks began to pour and we wanted to say no... but everything within us wouldn't let us. We all have used something to cope... self soothing. The song in a sense, reads the hearts and spirits of the GenZ and millennial culture. Music that you can both relate to and nod your head to in my opinion, should always stay in rotation.
"Turned up at the function, you can barely function." Simply put, this song will always be one of my favorite songs by Bryson. As a music enthusiast you could go as far as to say this song was Bryson's personal diary... "Hanging with them other n*ggas. I can barely stomach." It seems as if he bares his soul and feelings in such a way where he can't hold it in no matter how much he wants to, in such a way where he's so inclined to this person that he HAS to let her know... "I can and will come by, and keep you up." One thing is for sure... music should always be visual, more or less art to the ears, and tell a story. As one of my favorite artists... Bryson has always had that in the bag. This song is melodic, gives a night drive type of vibe. This song can be described as poetic, lyrical, and timeless.
What's your favorite Bryson Tiller song?
