I have brought up myself once about how abuse in love relationships isn’t as black and white as people think it is. Yes, of course it’s awful. But it doesn’t mean love isn’t there. In some cases with couples in the show, like with Willow and Tara, the abuse is brought about because of the character’s love for the other character, or more specifically because of not wanting to lose that love. It’s wrong, but again, it doesn’t mean that there’s no love there. Of course there is. It’s just confused with obsession and possession. The fear of loss and insecurity of not being worthy of someone’s love. And, as the saying goes, you always hurt the one you love because of all the chaos that’s going on within the self.

Buffy and Spike’s relationship is very abusive and tumultuous because they start off on opposing sides. They start off as enemies. But the one thing that has to be remembered when talking about this is that fate has made it that way. They never chose it to be that way. It’s just how it is. It’s not natural for them to love. So the abuse, in all honesty, is only appropriate as that is what is natural for them. They instinctively hurt one another because that’s what they’re supposed to do. Only, they go through an unnatural shift in which they begin to defy that instinct. For Spike in particular, actively chooses to go against it once he realizes he can. Once he understands that he does have a choice. There’s that word again. That theme. CHOICE. That’s what makes Spike a redeemable character. His choices. Because as Dumbledore from Harry Potter put it: “It is our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities.” Spike, despite being a vampire (souled or soulless), despite fate, despite nature and despite the odds, CHOSE to be on the side of good. It is not just his love for Buffy that decided that or that made him choose good over evil. It’s his empathy for everyone that he felt was good or was deserving or even that he could relate to or understand.

Regardless of the love he feels for Buffy - Spike is a GOOD person.

He is a good person with or without a soul simply because he chooses to be.

So while the excuse of being soulless/ensouled does hold up with some, it doesn’t for me. I think it’s a very rudimentary way of looking at it.

Furthermore, it’s made quite clear that he is never afforded the same respect as a do-gooder as Angel is - who’s nature is to be evil despite having a soul - who never chooses either way - who would rather brood and dwell in self-contempt than actually be useful - and who is forgiven far too easily for my liking.

Whether that means Spike deserves Buffy’s love or that their relationship should be celebrated as love or they should be shipped as a couple is still debatable.

But simply the excuse of “because he doesn’t have a soul” and “because he has a soul” is a pathetic excuse because it’s an excuse that doesn’t hold up well in a TV show Universe that blurs the lines between good and evil and that is grey.

CHOICE is the fundamental and most reiterated theme throughout BtVS and the character Spike represents that theme just as much as the character Buffy does.

You ask ‘Why shouldn’t they be shipped as a couple?’

I have my reasons but they don’t revolve around whether Spike has a soul or not. In fact they have much more to do with Buffy why I choose not to ship them.

Nevertheless, so much of Season 7 was about the Spuffy relationship that it was basically the secondary plot of the season. And for me, it was about the only reason I wanted to carry on watching it. There’s some Willow stuff too, but other than that… I just couldn’t stand how messy it was in plot consistency, character consistency etc. Spuffy was pretty much the saving grace of Season 7.

I do think Buffy had completely fallen in love with Spike by the end of the show. But for me, the expression she gives wasn’t so much for Spike’s sake so he would go through with the sacrifice. But that could be part of it. I more read the expression as her taking in the thought that maybe Spike was right about her admitting her love for him. That she wasn’t in love with him.

Why? Because she never believes of herself for what she really is or even for how she really feels. That’s that inferiority complex about having a superiority complex. There’s always a huge part of her psyche struggling with this problem with whether she deserves to be called a hero or not when she is a woman just like any other woman.

That’s something Spike did for her. Helped her to overcome both complexes by basically telling her and validating that her heroics are not something to be ashamed about but rather should be celebrated because she is a woman. Which is why ‘Empty Places’ is… ugh… And why it makes sense that Spike is the only one that defends her and calls out her fair-weather friends. He gets it because he gets her as both the Slayer and the Woman. Because much of Spuffy’s relationship is the juxtapositions between Man/Monster and Woman/Slayer. And if you read my recap for ‘Crush’ I explain that in depth.

It’s all right in Spike’s monologue in ‘Touched’. Read it again for good measure:

“I’ve been alive a bit longer than you. And dead a lot longer than that. I’ve seen things you couldn’t imagine. And done things I’d prefer you didn’t… Don’t exactly have a reputation for being a thinker. I follow my blood, which doesn’t exactly rush in the direction of my brain. So I make a lot of mistakes. A lot of wrong bloody calls. A hundred plus years. And there’s only one thing I’ve ever been sure of. You… Hey, look at me. I’m not asking you for anything. When I say I love you, it’s not because I want you. Or because I can’t have you. It has nothing to do with me. I love what you *are*. What you do. How you try… I’ve seen your kindness, and your strength. I’ve seen the best and the worst of you. And I understand, with perfect clarity, exactly what you are… You’re a hell of a woman… You’re the One, Buffy.”

So, for me, I think the reason why she doesn’t respond back and just simply smiles is because this is something she’s going to have to process a little more than in that 5 second window of opportunity to prove to Spike that she really does love him. Because she wasn’t ready yet to believe in the revelation that she had in that moment. She hasn’t come to an understanding on it yet and doesn’t have the time to right then and there. So she says nothing and instead conveys her feelings by holding his hand in the flames ready to engulf him. Knowing this is something she has to let him do for his own sake. But even if she tried to convince him of it, he’d likely still be adamant about his choice of sacrifice because he has seen her do the same over and over again and has learned through her about what it means to truly be a hero. To put others before himself. To sacrifice. To stand for the greater good. You see, he hasn’t been able to understand that about her until now. It was the one place where they were not equal. Not anymore. Now they are as of one nature.

We meet again @ Teddy & Naj

It wasn’t often the case that Teddy Byrne might go on a limb based on some rumor..but this was obviously a special case. A case by the name of Najelon. Who would’ve thought, right? After weeks..months of nothing but silence it seemed that the bastard had finally stopped being so bloody careful about erasing his tracks and the word had come out. To be completely frank, the vampire had heard only a vague description, confirmed by the people he had paid to keep an eye out, but that'd been enough for him.

As he arrived to the Bersekers of all places, Teddy stood still for the people at the front to do their checking and waltzed in ..very much aware of the many people who wanted his head in there for what he had done to Asher and Cardelle Mackie. Once inside, he moved through the crowd -careful- and let his trained eyes do the work..searching for the demon’s strikingly handsome pale looks until yes, they landed on a booth. At long fucking last.

“..tell me something.” the male hissed as he stepped closer, “Why here? Has seclusion finally wiped out all your wits?”
