Mountain Bog Gentian
Some plants and animals at Mount Rainier National Park are just meant for mountains. As many of our summer wildflowers go to seed the species that are left blooming in the fall are able to stick around because they are adapted to cooler weather. Mountain bog gentian avoids frost by closing its petals at night and reopening each morning.

This ability to bloom every day is called nyctinasty and it allows some flowers stay warm at night and keep blooming into the early fall. These plants were made for mountains. ~mmm

Plant of the Day
Tuesday 30 January 2024
The foliage of Calathea species (zebra plant, rattlesnake plant, peacock plant, cathedral plant, prayer plan) is sensitive to cold and grows best in a warm, moist atmosphere. Throughout the course of the day, these plants move their leaves around known as nyctinasty.

hi days8! any recs for nonexplicit naruhina fan fics that are still angsty and lovely and a good read? :)
Hello! Angsty AND lovely? I'm not exactly sure what you mean by that, but I'll try to....put some fics that are....lovely and angsty...
Nonexplicit Angsty, Lovely (?) NaruHina
✨ “A Place In The Sun” by ihaveastorminme - Rated M for smut and depictions of violence, Canon-Divergent, Multi-chapter, Incomplete.  Naruto realizes that he’s not enough to love her.  He’s not enough to save her, either.
“Jitters” by ncfan - Rated T, Canon-Compliant, One-shot. He has her heart but he doesn’t even know it.
“The Red Umbrella” by ncfan - Rated G, Canon-Divergent, One-shot. As the rain hits her, Hinata thinks about what she doesn’t have, and what she’ll never have now.
✨ "Nyctinasty" by @secrettastemakerland - Rated T, Canon-Divergent, One-shot. Hinata has been playing this game with flowers her whole life. She's sick of it. Until she's not.
“It’s High Tide, Baby” by @spyder-m - Rated T, High School AU, Multi-chapter, Complete. “Despite everything that happened around it, the water would continue to flow. It was majestic and free, so unlike the nature of his own existence.” Could their love withstand the test of distance and time, or was it doomed to slowly fade away?
"Picture Frames" by Forever_in_Your_Heart - Rated T, Canon-Divergent, One-shot. They say it's healthier to give up, but he is Uzumaki Naruto and he never gives up. (Can't. He can't, not this time)
Chapter 36 from "Between the Trees" by @utsus - Rated G, High Fantasy AU, One-shot. Inspired by the quote, “Bring me the sunflower gone mad with light,” by Eugenio Montale.
“My Favorite Night” by @peppercornpress - Rated M, Canon-Divergent AU, Multi-chapter, Ongoing. Hinata harbors deeper feelings for Naruto after three years of being his roommate. Facing hostile relations from her old clan, another odd phenomenon with the moon, and Naruto still hopelessly pining after Sakura; Hinata makes the painful choice to end their sham of a relationship and try her luck in another hidden village. Unbeknownst to her, this move kickstarts a series of events that forces her and Naruto to confront their past, present, and future.
“My Favorite Night” [Original] by peppercornpress - Rated M, Canon-Divergent, Multi-chapter, Incomplete. Hinata harbors deeper feelings for Naruto after three years of being his roommate. When he starts dating Sakura, Hinata decides it’s in her heart’s best interest to turn the other way, and leaves Naruto for good with a heart-breaking secret in tow.
“Sunshine” by @lass-that-is-gone - Rated G, Canon-Compliant, Short One-shot. The pain was so intense that she wanted to keel over.
“they call her love” by @borzbois - Rated T, Canon-divergent, Series of related one-shots. hold on to the world we all remember fighting for, there’s some strength left in us yet.
“Until the Day I Love” by BluBlooThalassophile - Rated M, Canon-Divergent, Multi-chapter, Incomplete. Everyone is recovering from the war.
I put a few Rated M fics, so it's up to you if you want to check those out or not. I starred ✨ "A Place in the Sun" even though it's rated M because it has truly some of the loveliest writing I have ever read, even the 1 smut scene is the most BEAUTIFUL piece of NaruHina writing ever.
Well, I'm not sure if this is what you meant by lovely, but I decided to go based off of the writing style.

Gazania rigens (cultivar: Big Kiss - ‘Orange Flame’)
Kissy face
Gazania rigens is native to South Africa and Mozambique but is grown in gardens all over the world. This plant is well adapted to any Mediterranean climate and is now described as “naturalized” in the Azores, Australia, New Zealand, the UK, France, Portugal, California, and Argentina. It is considered an ‘invasive weed’ in the islands of Madeira, Sicily and Sardinia.
Gazania rigens originally sported only yellow flowers but cultivars are now available in a dazzling array of patterns and colors, like this lovely ‘Big Kiss - Orange Flame’.
Gazanias like it dry and sunny and they tolerate poor soils and drought very well, after all, they were originally a coastal sand dune plant. Gazinias open in the sun and close at night or in overcast conditions (called nyctinasty). As a matter of fact, half an hour after I took these photos a cloudbank arrived, and the next time I looked these blooms were closed up, tight as a nut.

I'm sure you're busy writing your stories but if you have like 5 minutes of free time, would you share your answers? 😊
Tumblr media
Chloe!!! 💗💗💗
I love how you think so positive of me 😭💕 I am actually the world's biggest procrastinator 😔😔😔😔
Looking at my stats, I actually wrote a lot more than I thought haha 😅
Rain or Shine, SOS, Just Lock Them in a Closet, Miss me, Miss me, Nyctinasty, Purple-Eyed Angels, Dinner (Party) and a Movie (Night), A Dinner for Two, The Art of Procrastination, Jumping Jereseys, Sort of a Rainbow Type Feeling, Because He Deserves It, Isn't It Strange, and Pure Bliss
2. i'd do it all fair you, I Do, and the acquaintances verse (RIP I Do 💀)
3. I wrote some vignettes for acquaintances verse but no drabbles I'm afraid. 😔 maybe next year? 👀
4. 34,069 😳
5. Purple-Eyed Angels and Their Smiles
Summary:
At age 5, naruto unknowingly falls for a pretty girl who represented all things purple and he, unfortunately, hasn't been able to introduce himself since.
5 times Naruto didn't get to say hi to Hinata and the one time he did.
6. Isn't It Strange
Summary:
The past, future, and present is discussed between the (soon-to-be) groom and best man.
7. I honestly don't know? Writing Naruto and Hinata with different dynamics is always fun, but my faves would probably be sunshine family fics!!! They deserve better and I'm always ready to deliver. 😤😤😤
8. Acquaintances will always be the hardest I think. I know it's a fan favorite but, something about it always messes with me. Don't me wrong! I love finding what it needs but I think it's easier to write Acquaintances in my head.
9. Write what you want!!!!!! Write things that make you happy and stupid and obsessed with you and your brain!!!!!
Write. 👏 What. 👏 You. 👏 Want.
10. I have this little Valentine's Day fic in my docs that I found the other day and 👀 I really like it sooooo, let's see if I ever get to it lol

No, no. You can’t know who I am until the fateful day I fuck up and forget to hit anon. Anyway, have you heard of a plant called Calathea musaica? Sounds kinda Composery. Especially when you realize everyone deems it a dramatic bitch, when ACTUALLY, a person just needs to meet its very specific requirements and tastes. It isn’t quite so dramatic for the person who understands that it knows what it wants and acts accordingly. That’s gotta be a Joshua plant, right?
joshua is the fussiest houseplant you'd ever own lmao but no! i had not heard of this one and i am loving it: "Calathea musaica is in the same family as prayer plants (Marantas), and they share similar characteristics. Similar to prayer plants, Calathea musaica raises its leaves in the evening in a prayer-like pose. This unusual plant leaf movement is a process called nyctinasty. The leaves close due to darkness when the plant goes to “sleep.”

I want my character to have a garden of flowers that one row blooms in the day another row blooms at night, and a third row that stays open once bloomed. They'll be right up against a house and the back row is against the wall. The setting is fairly subtropical and humid in summer with dry winters. What flowers could achieve that (and at the same time of year of course) and what would be some good arrangements? I find myself drowning in research unfortunately...
Let’s start with the third row which is the easiest because that’s generally what most flowering plants do, so your character can pretty much choose whatever they like for this. For this one, let them pick whatever fits the best with the other two.
Now your character is growing plants in a very warm, rather humid climate, which is technically pretty good. A lot of plants can technically work with this, even if it’s not their native environment if their other needs are met in exchange. Generally more shade and water is what plants unused to that climate would need, and the wall of a house plus additional plants can provide shade.
Let’s start with the plants that close their blooms at night, which some also do with their foliage. Albeit nightfall is a bit of stretch in some cases, as certain plants just don’t like it too dark or they’ll roll up. Like calatheas. For anyone who is curious, the term for this is Nyctinasty.
California poppies, osteospermums and gazanias might be good candidates for your character’s plan, however if they are capable of keeping the soil moist so would be hibiscuses, morning glories or southern magnolias.
When it comes to plant care and what will grow there is a lot that depends on external factors, however with the right tools and time to invest a lot of plants can be accommodated.
As for the night blooming plants here are some your characters could grow. Casa Blanca lilies might be an option if your character is dealing with moist soil, and so could be brugmansias and daturas albeit those two are highly poisonous so maybe not. Perhaps flowering tobacco, moonflowers or night jasmine are a better choice for your character
Chocolate daisies also need less water, and so does night gladiolus
Now dragon fruit flowers and queens of night might seem like cool options, however the first has flowers that only bloom the night they open (much pruning required to make room for new flowers) and the latter blooms once in a blue moon. Otherwise, since both are cactus plants they would likely do well in your character’s home.

Craft
I – Old But Recent Craft
I make pollicitations to cunning bards past,
Place of old poets thy Parnassian pasts immortal
Your past-prime virtues now victuals to vexers who make you victims of gaunt learning or love-chagrinning solar sojourns.
In dissecting I seek to neither venerate nor eviscerate,
My lancet taps ichor and flowing essential claret extravasates into my peering vessel.
Thy outmoded phrase mould-grown with distant expiry
No narrative celerity, thesauring see-saw dramatics a periodical demands,
Every week three periods peering at readers from third-page’s bottom,
Thrills tamed by time and taste once titillating tedious in this time.
Thy foliate phrase, verbiage of verdigris lassos vellum psalters,
Thy posies a peony petal, all peacock and whorl and headdress whore,
Paean the paintaker, Olympians admit pain to him and that’s power,
Your prosody pain admits, therefore healing;
Thy hidden candour rebuffed at new millennium’s limen.
Though your age is gone your undimmed beauty hymns its genius;
Plain wonders have no want of sophisticated oration, your watchmaker exactitude.
Yet thy lofty compilation succours, common experience inalienable shouted across time;
Grasp solution from trials of antient persons,
Relay race of determined ancestors going to the edge of where they could;
Meeting the next; handing over the bundle; doggedly going on to the edge of where they could;
Chipped statue by whose feet I find tucked tools and a book of knowledge,
What next but to begin eking out its remainder.
Go now in peace.
Let nephew-taken arms be guided back to bedchambers.
Now, you have not even a ghost’s power to stir a naked flame,
I kiss your head, extinguish it for you then take your bundle,
Old things put to bed the poet’s pasture,
Portcullis rumbling closed; nyctinasty of shutting lids.
II – Abilities
Thy craft lend,
Blend fire and sight,
Twin utterance and song.
Elucidate right and wrong ways:
No nobled blood shall in pitying patronage let me a manse’s reign (though I would accept kindness); if ere my Rilken silks theretrod and heard the poem-rousing voice of One sublime,
What slithered forth would little pertain to angels or their kin;
Less of spheres, more of fears, of swarthy firesouled Djinn.
Poets old, lend fire to sight,
Born-drab wonders burgeoning blessings in birdfeather.
Helmetless pollard of hewn head foment fruitful trees.
Thy azure fontange sublimes, easy harmony highway of momentary animals graced by Peace.
You, most beautiful bard, goddess-regarding Minyan;
Three’s minion, golden means, many-death man of rhymes;
Welch Fusilier, cruiserweight bruiser, Claudian evocator.
Divine day isle of Deia, forth from Graves
Ridge of your grave peeking bird-nest head.
III. Pig Dreams
I wish I had been born a boar before scribes at history pawed,
Roamed landscapes untouched save for His indelible signature.
Sent between scents bounding boyish
No more to wonder what has meaning, lost amidst sensuous rapture.
Copse busy with never-stood-still, circled by timeless rings of never-moved.
No more to wonder but to wander;
Meaning forge no more, nor dreaming;
No more to lie abed dreading day’s dredging.
Escaping quietly as an anxious is elation.
Crowd huddled in a pleasure dome which I am far outside
Rain hits rim and bounces off, their words against my pride.
No more abed dreading day, hoping dawn’s netted dappling knells my demise.
Dare toward the dredgings of the day, for dusk will dive regardless
Strive to be innocent of mortality, living immortally
Though at birth they cut my stem and watched my slow death unfold
I will make lofty plans which a sage’s duration could not fulfil,
Embracing deterioration of accomplishment
Teasing out music from wreckage, bent fender vespers
At roadside rent asunder wonders warped wonderfully.
What has definition finds further definition; finds distinction; sublimes.
IV – Bindweed Lilies Near The Hospital
Six summers gleeful still, plucking bindweed lilies from grille-gemmed hedges,
Flowers plucked quickly die but how stationed this demise,
Work of ages accomplished momentarily:
White petals sprout spreading brown veins
Until limp and lined its back-peeled diameters meet;
My birth and death and that between duration of wind-pushed flames.
The music lasts just its moment but we rarely weep its close.
Each life the span of a universe’s most ambitious empire yet,
Exceeding forebears in extent, fanned-cards of possibly destinies.
Exhausted fate and errant miraculous presiding,
Placing bindweed lilies into the empty vase on the crying lady’s table,
Silks and satins and soft words.
Unbudged font of mercy,
What every woman and no man knows, that lilies are not children.

Calathea Freddy Plant: Unleashing Vibrance and Elegance in Your Indoor Paradise
Introduction:
If you're on the hunt for a plant that boasts both striking foliage and a captivating presence, look no further than the Calathea Freddy. With its unique patterns, vibrant colors, and impressive ability to move its leaves, this plant has become a favorite among indoor gardening enthusiasts. In this blog post, we will dive into the world of Calathea Freddy, exploring its remarkable features, care tips, and reasons why it deserves a spot in your indoor paradise.
Introducing Calathea Freddy:
Calathea Freddy, scientifically known as Calathea crocata 'Freddy,' is a tropical plant native to the rainforests of South America. It belongs to the Marantaceae family and is renowned for its eye-catching foliage. What sets the Freddy variety apart from other Calathea species is its rich, velvety leaves featuring a stunning combination of deep green and vibrant orange colors.
Exquisite Foliage:
The foliage of the Calathea Freddy is a true showstopper. Its large, oval-shaped leaves are adorned with intricate patterns that resemble brushstrokes, combining shades of dark green, light green, and orange. The undersides of the leaves feature a vibrant reddish-purple hue, adding an extra touch of elegance to its overall appearance. The unique leaf patterns and coloration make the Calathea Freddy a visually captivating addition to any indoor space.
Leaf Movements:
One of the most fascinating aspects of the Calathea Freddy is its ability to move its leaves. Known as "prayer plants," Calatheas have a unique characteristic called nyctinasty. The leaves of the Freddy variety open during the day, displaying their beautiful patterns and colors. As evening approaches, the leaves gracefully fold upward, resembling hands in prayer. This natural leaf movement adds an interactive and dynamic element to the plant, captivating both plant enthusiasts and curious onlookers.
Care Tips for Calathea Freddy:
To ensure your Calathea Freddy Plant thrives, it's important to provide it with the right care conditions. Here are some key tips to keep in mind:
a. Lighting: Freddy prefers bright, indirect light. Avoid exposing it to direct sunlight, as it can scorch the leaves. Place the plant in a well-lit room away from direct windows or provide filtered light through sheer curtains.
b. Temperature and Humidity: Calathea Freddy thrives in warm, humid environments. Maintain a temperature range of 65°F to 75°F (18°C to 24°C) and provide humidity levels of around 50% or higher. Placing the plant on a pebble tray filled with water or using a humidifier can help create the ideal humidity conditions.
c. Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water the plant when the top inch of soil feels dry. Avoid allowing the soil to completely dry out, as it can cause leaf curling and damage.
d. Soil and Fertilization: Use a well-draining, peat-based potting mix to ensure proper drainage. Fertilize the Calathea Freddy Plants with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer once a month during the growing season (spring and summer).
Stunning Indoor Décor:
The Calathea Freddy's remarkable foliage and leaf movements make it an excellent choice for indoor décor. Whether placed on a tabletop, in a hanging basket, or as part of a lush plant display, its vibrant colors and unique patterns will draw attention and create a focal point in any room. The Calathea Freddy's elegant presence adds a touch of exotic beauty and sophistication to your indoor paradise.

Printing Workshop
During the first part of our Relief and Intaglio class, we began by making Lino stamps. I made two flowers at different stages of the day. One flower was awake and ready, its petals fully opened. The petals of the second flower were closed up, as if tucked into bed.
This happens due to Tropisms, in plants can be caused by environmental factors such as light. Heliotropism, on the other hand, is when a plant follows the movement of the sun during the day and closes up at night. Most flowers initiate closure by pumping water out of cells at the base of the petals, causing them to wilt shut. This natural behavior is referred to as nyctinasty. Certain flowers' bottom-most petals grow faster than their upper-most petals in cool air and darkness, forcing the flowers to close. Many plants close their leaves at night, usually to protect pollen or to reduce water loss while the leaves are not photosynthesising.
