Regarding changes to Superman characters in My Adventures With Superman:
This MIGHT be hyperbole, I haven’t checked, but there are approximately 10,000 versions of these same characters.
The previous versions of the characters whom one might like still exist, and may do so in multiple forms of media.
Even if My Adventures With Superman maintained previous visual design, these aren’t the same characters.
I don’t say that as an insult.
These are new characters inspired by the Superman template.
As is the case with every version of Superman and pals over the past several decades, these are essentially professionally-made fan characters (again, not meant as an insult).
In this instance, they chose a young adult Superman with fellow scrub reporters Jimmy and Lois. They, and all the other characters, share DNA with previous versions, but are ultimately doing their own thing.
These aren’t the same characters, and they’re not trying to be.
Getting more subjective, I think viewing past stories as templates can be great. This is especially true in a world that insists on brand recognition.
We might want something completely new, but executives don’t, and they provide the funding.
If we’re going to be stuck in a dystopian reboot nightmare, we can at least try and enjoy how varied and creative people can get by viewing previous versions of characters and stories as templates to have fun with, and not just things to copy and paste with minimal variation.

A little while ago, I decided that I wanted to pull a Rick Riodan and take a stab at Percy-Jacksonifying Norse mythology (something he’s already done, but shhhh). I don’t know if it’ll go anywhere, but this is what I’ve managed to pump out before the hyperfixation wore off:

I’ll definitely post more if I eventually hyperfixate back on this project, but for now, this is my progress so far.

3.08 Brotherly Love Stranger Bedfellows
Dorothy finds a visit from her ex-brother-in-law to be a welcome distraction from the rift between her and Blanche. It’s very awkward having to skirt around the woman she’s been dating and raising a kid with for months as though they’re strangers. They haven’t said anything to each other in days, relaying necessary information through Rose and Sophia, and have developed a weird custody arrangement that has Dorothy taking care of Ellie during the day and Blanche taking care of her at night. Rose is having trouble sleeping for unrelated reasons (same as canon).
But while Ted is in town, he offers to take Dorothy out to dinner as the old friends that they are. So this happens.
Rose, entering the living room, where Dorothy is sullenly reading a newspaper on the couch: Dorothy, Blanche says that the milk is heating up in the crib and the baby is on the stove. Dorothy: ... Rose: ... Rose: Sorry. I meant to say that the milk is heating up the baby and the crib is on the stove. Or was it, the baby is eating the milk and the stove is in the crib? Dorothy: Honey, I’m begging you, take a sleeping pill. And while you’re at it, please tell Blanche that I’m going out for dinner with Ted tonight. Rose: I can’t take a sleeping pill. Those make me loopy. *raises voice* Blanche! Dorothy says that I should go out for dinner tonight and she’s sleeping with Ted!” Blanche, bursting out of her bedroom: She’s WHAT?! Dorothy: That’s not what I said! I said I’m going out to dinner with Ted. As friends! Blanche: ... Blanche: Hmmph!
Dorothy takes some comfort in the fact that Blanche still cares who she does and doesn’t spend time with. But she takes even more comfort in spending the entire night out with Ted. They don’t kiss and technically they don’t flirt, but they toe the line a little bit too close. Dorothy comes home confused and upset.
Blanche: Good morning, Rose. Good morning, Tramp. Dorothy: Wait...you can see me? For a moment there I thought I was a ghost. Blanche: I haven’t killed you yet, honey. Rose, delirious with exhaustion: Mom, Dad, stop fighting. Blanche: You’ve got some goddamn nerve. You accuse me of running around with that damn politician, then less than a week later you’re in bed with your ex-brother-in-law? Dorothy: I am not. We only talked, Blanche. That’s also an activity that people can do at night. Blanche: Well that’s rich, considering you’re the one who cheated on me. Dorothy: I didn’t cheat on you! How is you refusing to believe me any different than me refusing to believe you? Blanche: Because you’ve already betrayed my trust, that’s why! Rose: Calm down, before you both say something you regret. Blanche: *storms out* Dorothy: I don’t believe this! She’s such a hypocrite! Rose: relax, Dorothy. I’ll make you some tea.
[scene continues to show Rose overcaffinating herself same as canon]
Later that night, Dorothy goes out dancing with Ted. Friends can go dancing, right? Blanche finds out through Rose, and she’s not happy at all. She’s sitting on the couch nursing Ellie when there’s a knock at the door.
Stan: Hi, it’s me, Stan. Blanche: Go hug a landmine! Stan: *opens door* nice to see you too, Blanche Blanche: Damnit. Rose forgot to lock it again. Stan: I came by to see if Ted was here. Blanche: Nope. He’s out dancing with your ex-wife. Stan: *sighs* I knew it. Ted moves fast. I bet he’s planning on proposing to her right now. The worst part is, she’s only using him to get back at me. Blanche: Don’t flatter yourself, she’s using him to get back at-wait...what did you do this time? Stan: Nothing. That’s it. She’s still holding a past grudge over the mistakes I made while we were married. Blanche: Wait a minute. Stan, did you cheat on Dorothy? More than once? Stan: Well, yeah, but c’mon, my brother? Sure, I slipped up with my secretary, and with the flight attendant, and the waitress, but I only made a pass at her sister one time. Blanche: Oh, my god! *stands up quickly* Rose! Rose! I have something very important I have to do. Stan: Not what I was expecting, but okay. Got any condoms? Blanche. Not you.
Blanche runs into Rose’s room to wake her up, which is difficult because Rose has finally fallen asleep. Blanche: Wake up, I need your help! I need someone to tend to Ellie for a little while so I can go find Dorothy! She’s so upset with me, and God, I don’t blame her. I’ve been awful. Just awful! Rose, listen! Am I a terrible person? Rose: I don’t know. Who are you? Blanche: It’s me, Blanche! Rose: No, you’re not a terrible person! You’re just horny all the time! *yawns* Fine, I’ll watch Ellie. But only for one hour, and then you have to let me rest.
Blanche rushes down to the club where Ted is dancing with Dorothy. She cuts in, a particularly bold move since they are very much still closeted for the most part. Blanche tells Dorothy that she’s sorry she’s been giving her the silent treatment and that she should have understood that the only reason why Dorothy’s so sensitive about cheating is because Stan did it to her so many times.
Dorothy: And I’m so, so sorry for not believing you about Gil Kessler. Blanche: I forgive you! And I’m so, so sorry for pretending not to believe you about Ted! Dorothy: You mean you never doubted me? Blanche: Of course not, I was just mad because I figured you were trying to make me jealous. Nobody cheats on me, I’m gorgeous! Dorothy: You are gorgeous! Blanche: So are you!
They almost kiss, but then remember they’re in public. So they walk back over to the table with Ted.
Dorothy: Listen, Ted. There’s something I should tell you. Ted: There’s something I should tell you, too. Blanche: As long as you’re not about to ask her to marry you? Ted: Of course not! I’m about to ask her to babysit! Dorothy: But Ted, you don’t have any children. Ted: No, but I met this gorgeous stewardess on the flight out here, and she can only come with me to Acapulco if she can find a sitter for her two kids. You don’t mind, do you? They’re great kids. One of them plays with matches and stuff, but you don’t smoke, right? Dorothy: I’m afraid that between Rose and Ellie, we can’t risk any more potential fire starters in the house. But I’m flattered you asked. And I promise you that I will never, ever tell anyone that deep dark secret you shared with me. Dorothy: *takes Blanche’s hand and walks to the mike to announce that Ted is impotent*
They go home, and Dorothy goes back to sleeping in Blanche’s bed where she belongs.

For this occasion, I decided to show you some etchings from Portuguese artist Dame Paula Rego. Who I'm saddened to inform you had passed away recently.
For those who don't know, Rego was the first artist of that nationality for me to be exposed to. Being half Portuguese myself, I couldn't have found anyone better. I've always admired her work, as she was one of the few contemporary fine artists to project narrative into her works. What I found intriguing about her work was how her style would evolve, each series of pictures would project themes and topics that were personal to her. Rego would make her models project bold emotions through body language and expressions.
I will take consolation in the fact she kept drawing and creating up to this point. Because her works not only left an impact on me but the Portuguese art scene in general. And I hope future generations will take note of this.

Animation idea
I think that we, as an Internet community who loves nostalgic properties but hates being bombarded by every shitty remake Hollywood has brought back from the Pet Cemetery -- INCLUDING "Pet Sematary" -- are overdue for a Renaissance of Beast Fables.
Like, reimagining stories is part of storytelling culture, whether it's unintentional (word of mouth misses some details) or absolutely intentional (completely involved AUs with whole new rule sets and worldbuilding and such). Reimaginings can be a lot of fun, and give a lot more breathing room to people who actually wanna be creative instead of carrying out the same old-same old that executives are So Convinced are what the masses want.
My proposal? Pull a Lion King on 'em.
The Lion King wasn't a 1:1 adaptation of Hamlet for obvious kid-friendly reasons (would've been a bit of a downer for everyone to end up like their Shakespearean counterparts), but at its root, at its conception, it's a twist on Hamlet. And that's completely okay that the final product doesn't exactly match the initial inspiration, because it shows that the production team was allowed to think and use their imaginations during the creative process.
Didn't anyone else grow up with those reimagined/fractured fairytales in elementary school? We had a book where Cinderella was a sasquatch, it was fucking awesome
Tumblr media
All the beloved stories, both new and old, can get the Lion King treatment. They don't even have to be animals every time, they can be robots or aliens or any direction one's muse pulls them in.
And for the love of corn, some of them can be animated outside of 3D CGI. It can be 2D, it can be stop-motion or claymation, it can be fucking puppets(or even Muppets!). Please.
Please.
There is so much more to this world than making the next Frozen. Shake yourself free of the tractor beam of What Will Make The Most Money, go forth and write the stories you want to see in the world -- even if you retooled an older story to fit a world of furries, it'd be doing a LOT more than anyone distributing huge-budget franchises would dare to do right now.
If I have to see one more Elsa clone on my phone app game ad du jour, I might just scream

Hey All,
I've been away for some time, as we've been working really hard on something quite exciting:
let me present to you the world's first ever global ocean drainage basin map that shows all permanent and temporary water flows on the planet.
Tumblr media
This is quite big news, as far as I know this has never been done before. There are hundreds of hours of work in it (with the data + manual work as well) and it's quite a relief that they are all finished now.
But what is an ocean drainage basin map, I hear most of you asking? A couple of years ago I tried to find a map that shows which ocean does each of the world's rivers end up in. I was a bit surprised to see there is no map like that, so I just decided I'll make it myself - as usual :) Well, after realizing all the technical difficulties, I wasn't so surprised any more that it didn't exist. So yeah, it was quite a challenge but I am very happy with the result.
In addition to the global map I've created a set of 43 maps for different countries, states and continents, four versions for each: maps with white and black background, and a version for both with coloured oceans (aka polygons). Here's the global map with polygons:
Tumblr media
I know from experience that maps can be great conversation starters, and I aim to make maps that are visually striking and can effectively deliver a message. With these ocean drainage basin maps the most important part was to make them easily understandable, so after you have seen one, the others all become effortless to interpret as well. Let me know how I did, I really appreciate any and all kinds of feedback.
Here are a few more from the set, I hope you too learn something new from them. I certainly did, and I am a geographer.
Tumblr media
The greatest surprise with Europe is that its biggest river is all grey, as the Volga flows into the Caspian sea, therefore its basin counts as endorheic.
An endorheic basin is one which never reaches the ocean, mostly because it dries out in desert areas or ends up in lakes with no outflow. The biggest endorheic basin is the Caspian’s, but the area of the Great Basin in the US is also a good example of endorheic basins.
Tumblr media
I love how the green of the Atlantic Ocean tangles together in the middle.
Tumblr media
No, the dividing line is not at Cape Town, unfortunately.
Tumblr media
I know these two colours weren’t the best choice for colourblind people and I sincerely apologize for that. I’ve been planning to make colourblind-friendly versions of my maps for ages now – still not sure when I get there, but I want you to know that it’s just moved up on my todo-list. A lot further up.
Tumblr media
Minnesota is quite crazy with all that blue, right? Some other US states that are equally mind-blowing: North Dakota, New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming. You can check them all out here.
Tumblr media
Yes, most of the Peruvian waters drain into the Atlantic Ocean. Here are the maps of Peru, if you want to take a closer look.
Tumblr media
Asia is amazingly colourful with lots of endorheic basins in the middle areas: deserts, the Himalayas and the Caspian sea are to blame. Also note how the Indonesian islands of Java and Sumatra are divided.
Tumblr media
I mentioned earlier that I also made white versions of all maps. Here’s Australia with its vast deserts. If you're wondering about the weird lines in the middle: that’s the Simpson desert with its famous parallel sand dunes.
Tumblr media
North America with white background and colourful oceans looks pretty neat, I think.
Tumblr media
Finally, I made the drainage basin maps of the individual oceans: The Atlantic, the Arctic, the Indian and the Pacific. The Arctic is my favourite one.
I really hope you like my new maps, and that they will become as popular as my river basin maps. Those have already helped dozens of environmental NGOs to illustrate their important messages all around the world. It would be nice if these maps too could find their purpose.

Aaah such an amazing YA read! I started this in the middle of the night last night, slept a few hours, and then finished it this morning before even eating breakfast, it was that good. Gothic horror? SO much. Spirited, nuanced, conflicted heroine? Yep! Lots of banter? The best kind. This reimagining of Jane Eyre fuses all the elements of books I've loved, with vibes of Jordan Ifueko's Raybearer and Silvia Moreno's Mexican Gothic, as well as britlit classics. And Blackwood infuses elements of her Ethiopian culture throughout the story, which was so cool to recognize from what some of my students have shared! Andromeda is a debtera, an exorcist of sorts, who, in the presence of hauntings and manifestations, can sense how to design amulets that will cleanse them. But having been forced to leave her apprenticeship, she is desperate to find a patron who will pay her for her abilities, so she can survive. This leads her to the ominous Rochester house, where many debtera before her have tried and failed to drive out the deep presence of evil - and to live with Magnus, its irascible, misanthropic heir, which Andromeda thinks just might be the more difficult job. This book had a wonderful balance of Gothic horror and slow-burn romance - I'm usually not a fan of lots of romance in books, but this was beautifully done. No sex, and a believable mix of fun banter, and serious boundary-setting and conflict, the misunderstandings ubiquitous in the genre handled in a way that was not at all annoying. So many books, you want to yell "just talk to each other!" at the characters - but this one, they did, both creating and mending miscommunication and forging a truly beautiful relationship. Love in all forms was explored - the complicated love of fractured family relationships, the warm bond of friendship, the tentative love of people learning to trust - this was a great character book. I absolutely recommend it! #ya #yabooks #yabookstagram #librarian #librariansfollowlibrarians #spookyreads #gothichorror #cleanromance #reimaginings #retellings #bookstagram https://www.instagram.com/p/CklONXBOBtQ/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
