This may sound sexist but this is twilight vamps we're dealing with. I'd imagine that like you said the Romanians probably wouldn't have the word compromise in their vocabulary. And unless you're a vampire and probably one who has 'been around the block' they'll most likely get you to do what they say or want using various methods...maybe. The average human may not have the push back to disagree.

But I can see them especially Vladimir keeping up with outdated ideals maybe not with physical beauty standards but with behavior or mannerisms he thinks a woman should have especially if you're dating him. I think he's a big believer of your behavior represent you and those around you. Especially since he used to be a leader of most powerful coven at one point in time. I can see him not wanting his mate(reader) to 'associate' herself with those he deems lesser than himself or reader. Like I think he still have a superiority complex from his days of ruling in a way. And he may have this ideology about keeping his mate away from other men to keep her 'pure' or keep her from getting the wandering eye.

Listen, I don't have to tell anyone here that white men in particular gave no fucks what anyone but themselves had to say and deemed everything else unimportant and uneducated. I find it hard to believe that these isolated covens move with the times when half the time they have dated clothes/ clothes you wouldn't see the common Joe wear.

It could just be me but I haven't seen this coat before nor after this character. Don't even get me STARTED on his twin. You just know if they showed up to a modern school like that- they're the weirdos who get bullied.

ANYWAY- not the point. I don't see these guys going from that upbringing, being isolated af for centuries to then seeing everyone as equal. Its just not realistic. They may look perfect but much like humans, theyre not perfect. However I do think there are some differences because I think of this as more of a social difference between species:

I reckon race isn't an issue for vampires of any era. I don't think they care because when a vampire, you're already on the outside of human values and norms. So why try to conform to something that is useless?

As for women, I think this genuinely depends on the person. Carlisle sees Esme as his partner and equal. I think his adoration for her always had that power over him. Not to mention he's constantly around humans so he watches them develop era by era. He can and always does compromise with Esme, if not going with what she wants and will drag the rest of the coven too.

Caius admired Athenodora's strength and is more than aware she could handle herself. However, as her mate, he will always make sure she'll never have to lift a finger nor fear for her survival. It'll never be a question for her and that's how he wants it. He was raised to be the strong man who protects his wife and maintains that to this very day. He'll make decisions and face everything for the both of them. Her safety means everything to him. He'll be nearly impossible to compromise with because he doesn't trust anyone outside the Volturi. Not to mention the number of enemies the Volturi has and the rising tensions.

Vladimir, having lost his mate, upon the situation of having another mate who is female will likely never let them do anything nor out of his sight. He doesn't care if they can think for themselves or cannot. What they want to do or not. He won't compromise on a single thing. It's his way and that is final. It's not that he looks down on them, not intentionally anyway. It's his normal, he was pushed to be this strong man who survives anything and everything because men couldn't be honest with their vulnerabilities or show weakness. He only does what he does because he cares and won't be able to survive such a loss again.

You're absolutely right! I totally agree and would even go as far to say all of the Volturi and the Romanian coven have a superiority complex. Amun too.

Remember: to most vampires, humans are just food and no one apologises to their food before they eat it or care for what the food wants or thinks-or even if it can.

So if one becomes attached, yay! You've moved up a peg in their eyes but it doesn't change that most were raised to be strong and not back down to anything or it shows weakness.

Plus, something that i don't think was covered too well with the Cullen's. Why would a human get their way when they're lucky to be alive to even acknowledge what's happening around them? You don't get to decide when, where and how you die. You just do.

So Latin at school. Yay.

Basically you're not learning it in the same way you'd any modern language. It's a language that was in use for thousands of years so of course it changed a lot during this time span. That's why it's separated in at least three categories - classical Latin (used in late Roman Republic and early Roman Empire), ecclesiastical Latin (used by medieval Church) and Vulgar Latin (unofficial Latin used from the Late Roman Republic onward) this one is the origins story of all Romance languages.

Yep. All those fancy, sexy languages that people find hot like Italian or French are based on what I can only explain as Latin Cockney:

Just imagine Dave is Latin language and Daveo is Italian/French/Spanish/Portuguese/Romanian language.

It kind of looks like a medieval language class tbh. You don't learn how to introduce yourself or how to describe your family tree, because:

1. It's a dead language so it doesn't serve the purpose of communication anymore like foreign language does.

2. Latin is still used in science and it's a language which influenced Western identity the most. In order to truly understand the Western culture you need Latin (and ancient Greek but Latin is a bare minimum.)

You learn words and their conjugations (because in Latin unlike in English each person has it's own verb variant) and translate old texts. Conjugation may be affected by person, number, gender, tense, mood, aspect, voice, or other language-specific factors.

The purpose of having Latin is to better understand how modern European languages function. It's a blueprint for Romance languages like: Italian, French, Spanish, Portugese and Romanian (those are the big ones but not the only existing Romance languages.) Latin had an influence on the other language families too, and you'll have hard time finding European languages that don't have any Latin influence ( I'm looking at you the Finno-Ugric gang - Finnish, Estonian and Hungarian.) English was influenced by Latin too, that's why for example when you see this majestic beast:

You'd call it a Germanic word "a cow" but when it's turned into this:

It's called beef, from Old French boef (modern French bœuf) -> Latin bōs.

The poorer Germanic language people were keeping cows but the rich French Norman (Latin based language) speakers ate them.

Knowing Latin, even basic knowledge, is very helpful if you want to learn an European language. The logic behind the language (like existence of plural forms, significant portion of the vocabulary ect) is more often than not Latin based.

For many countries (in Europe but not only) Latin is also the language of religion. Yes, Catholic church still uses Latin from time to time, and to pass religion class in grade 8 (I think) I had to memorize Lord's Prayer aka Pater Noster (it's the Catholic beliefs in a nutshell and how Jesus taught the prayer should look like) in Latin. Latin is also an official language of the Vatican City, and was in fact one of the reasons why reformation happened, but I'm getting off track.

Latin is also useful in philosophy. Though many of the ancient European philosophers were Greek, there were a few Romans too. As you might noticed, in translation parts of text loose their meaning, and the words don't have an impact of the original version. Same thing with philosophy. To fully understand and embrace the meaning you need to know the original language aka Latin.

To summ it up! Latin is still sometimes taught in schools because:

1. it's a blueprint for the majority of modern European languages (and in the EU you should speak at least two) so if you know basic Latin it's easier to learn other languages.

2. It's the language of science and ancient philosophy. To truly understand what thought process created the West you need to know how Latin functioned and what texts written in it actually mean.

3. It's a language of the Catholic Church - the largest nomination in the Christian religion. Approximately 1.3 billion people in the world are Catholics - that's 17.7% of the world's population.

4. It's the common heritage of the Western world locked in the language form. People learn it to learn about their heritage and culture. What influenced people through thousands of years to form the Western cultures and history? Why certain thoughts and ideas (like for example individualism instead of collectivism, démocraties instead of authoritarianism) were embraced in the West? Language affects the way people think, so how Latin influenced Western values?

today was my second (official) class of Romanian, so I thought I’d share some things I learned from the first two lessons:

ciorbă means a soup made with cream with the ingredients still in it, while supă is a clear soup from which you remove the ingredients before serving (e.g. fish, chicken etc.)

in the word România, the accent is on the i, not the â (I blame Spanish for making me think the latter)

When asked, Ce faci? (How are you), you can answer „așa și așa” (so so), and it’s pronounced „așașașa”

You only ask Cum ești? if a person has had an accident or an illness (again, I blame Spanish)

Aici sau la pachet? means Here or to go? (very useful)

Hai la o bere. - Let’s go for a beer.

Mi-e foame. - I am hungry. / Mi-e sete. - I am thirsty. / Sunt sătul. - I am full.

chef and petrecere both mean party

oră means both hour and class, for example: Sunt la ora de română. - I’m at the Romanian class.

obosit(ă) means tired (very useful again)

There are at least three ways to ask for somebody’s name:

Cum te cheamă?

Cum te numești?

Care e numele tău?

Vise plăcute = Sweet dreams

Distracție plăcută! = Have fun!

Nu merge. - It doesn’t work.

There are short forms for numbers above ten:

11 (unsprezece) = unșpe

Although Romani is used mainly as an oral language, some Roma do write in Romani. Some orthographic conventions emerged over the centuries since then, but there is no completely standard spelling system.

Grammar

Romani has two genders (masculine and feminine), two numbers (singular and plural) and nine cases (nominative, vocative, accusative, dative, locative, ablative, instrumental, genitive, and indirect). There are two classes of nominals, based on the historic origin of the word, that have a completely different morphology.

Adjectives and the definite article show agreement with the noun they modify.

Verbs are conjugated for tense, mood (conditional, imperative, indicative, and subjunctive), aspect, person, and number. They belong to several classes, but unlike nominals, these are not based on historical origin, and can be perfective or non-perfective.

Dialects

Nowadays, dialects can be split into four major groups: Northern Romani in western and northern Europe, southern Italy and the Iberian peninsula; Central Romani from southern Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Carpathian Ruthenia and southeastern Austria; Balkan Romani, including the Black Sea coast, and Vlax Romani, associated with the historical Wallachian and Transylvanian regions.

Northern Romani comprises Baltic Romani (Estonian Romani, Latvian/Lettish Romani, North Russian Romani, Polish Romani and White Russian Romani), Finnish Kalo Romani, Sinte Romani (Abbruzzesi, Serbian Romani and Slovenian-Croatian Romani), and Welsh Romani.

Central Romani includes East Slovak Romani, Moravian Romani, and West Slovak Romani.

Once they left Transia, the family spoke Romani rather than Transian during the nomadic period where they traveled in their vardo rather than having a permanent residence. 

Once the family settled in Sokovia, the twins began to learn it from hearing it around the city they lived in as well as reading it on television and in newspapers, although their understanding of the language was incomplete for the first couple years they lived there. By the time they were orphaned at ten, they were fluent speakers, but when alone together, they exclusively spoke Romani. However, since the twins continued to live in Sokovia and were bounced around to different foster homes, their mastery of the language continued. So he was picking up parts of Bulgarian, Greek, Turkish, even Serbian, Romanian, and Ukrainian.

Pietro is very intelligent, but he has a hard time concentrating on things like reading, studying, and learning languages from sheer vocabulary and grammar lessons alone. However, put him in a room of people that don’t all speak the same language, and eventually he will start picking things up. He’s very good with it, actually... a lot better than Wanda is. Wanda learns better from formal lessons and books and reading on her own, partially because she doesn’t have her brother’s concentration issues, but also because crowds and people she doesn’t know make her nervous, so she’s often not comfortable enough to be receptive to learning languages in casual conversation.

Once the twins ended up in the Hydra lab, they were forced to learn certain things that the organization thought would eventually make them more efficient and versatile spies. Languages was one of the things they really tried to drill into the twins. Wanda excelled at her lessons, but Pietro did not. The more tired, frustrated, angry, upset, or distracted Pietro is, the more pronounced his accent will become and the worse his grammar and use of words will become as well. The same is true of Wanda, but not to the same degree.

The end result is that Pietro often uses more informal, slang, colloquial ways of speaking because that’s what he’s comfortable with. That’s what he’s learned through experience by talking with native speakers of the languages, so it’s settled in his brain more naturally and become second nature. Wanda’s speech is more formal, more streamlined, more grammatically correct, and more nuanced as far as word choice because she has studied vocabulary and grammar more extensively and retained more of that information.

Of course that is only true for non-native languages. When speaking their native Romani, they chatter on at light speed fluently and naturally using as much slang - and sometimes profanity - as they want, haha. That is the language they will break into when shocked, surprised, or suddenly upset or angry. Whenever they “forget English” for some reason, it is Romani they will default to, although sometimes they will substitute a word from another language here and there into English because they don’t realize it isn’t English. They learned so many languages in a short number of years that the words are sometimes a bit jumbled and crossed over.

Pietro often feels like his more fragmented English is a sign of low intelligence, when in fact, in many other languages it is Wanda who will sound more foreign, have a heavier accent, or will speak in an unnaturally formal way. Pietro will sound more natural in some cases because the languages he’s retained are largely what people would speak in their everyday lives. Wanda would sound either aristocratic, eccentric, arrogant, or just plain silted in some language because she is using the 100% formal, proper, grammatically correct forms of verbs and articles an things. 1. Name: You know that joke, “Nice name, did your mom pick it for you?” My given name was actually the only one chosen by my mom. I do like my nickname/chosen name better, though. Now I can be like “Thanks, I picked it myself!” It’s a very unusual name, spelled the very usual way, and I like it that way. I still have to spell it out sometimes(???)

The Hebrew version of it means “My friend”, which I like a lot. (Shoutout to Public Universal Friend)

2. Nickname: Technically my chosen name is my nickname on official forms. “Morin”  has been my online nickname for 20 odd years, with all sorts of variations. It was the last name of an author of some paper I found interesting and I just chose it when I had to pick one. I never thought it would stick around for so long.

3. Zodiac sign: Hufflepuff. Kidding, it’s Taurus. I don’t believe in it, but my BFF likes it. I still think Hogwarts house/HDM Dæmon etc tell you more about a person.

Viktor Krum meta: language use & accent

Before I even start in earnest, I just wanna say this is particular to my interpretation of Viktor and comes with all my hangups as a Bulgarian person living in Brexit Britain; also it got pretty long. But if you like some light sociocultural analysis along with your meta, by all means read on.

So we all know how Rowling chose to represent Viktor—quiet, grumpy, slightly bumbling, and when he does speak, not particularly articulate. He does have a decent vocabulary range, but his accent is harsh and noticeable. He is also shown to speak in present continuous tense, as seen here:

‘Vell, ve have a castle also, not as big as this, nor as comfortable, I am thinking,’ he was telling Hermione. ‘Ve have just four floors, and the fires are lit only for magical purposes. But ve have grounds larger even than these – though in vinter, ve have very little daylight, so ve are not enjoying them. But in summer ve are flying every day, over the lakes and the mountains –’

Here’s an example from DH, where you can see he still has the accent, but also the (not bad) range of vocabulary he’s given, as well as his correct use of prepositions:

I'm here to explain why I do it (a little) differently.

First of all, let me lay some groundwork. He was born in the mid-seventies in Bulgaria, which at the time was part of the Eastern Bloc. I'm going to refrain from talking about the ramifications of that on our culture, but keep in mind we were very much in bed with the Soviet Union during his formative years. Furthermore, he went to Durmstrang—a school known for accepting pupils from a very wide geographical range, seeing as it's located somewhere ‘in the far north of Europe’ and yet accepted Viktor, from way down in southeastern Europe. Either he was exceptional, or it's a pretty multicultural school.

So what does that tell us? Well, to begin with, the boy is more than likely to have been fluent in at least, AT LEAST, three languages: Bulgarian, which was his native language, of course; Russian, which was a mandatory subject from an early age in school (even if he didn’t go to muggle school, he would’ve had to speak it to avoid rousing suspicion), and which is relatively easy for a fellow Slavic language speaker to learn and retain; and either German or one of the Scandinavian languages, which he would've been taught in while at Durmstrang. At minimum.

At the same time, the Triwizard Tournament would've presented Viktor's first serious brush with the English-speaking world. English was not taught in school at the time (see also: Cold War); if you picked up a second foreign language (on top of Russian, which basically didn't count), it would be either German or French, due to long-standing sociocultural ties (i.e. our intelligentsia were largely educated in France, and we sided with Germany in both world wars; don't ask). So unless his family went out of their way to teach him English, which they would've had no reason to as it wasn't seen as useful, he wouldn't have learned it formally at any stage.

How do I know all this? Well, I’m Bulgarian for one, and also my parents are only 5-10 years older than Viktor would be. They speak, or at some point have spoken, 4-5 languages between them, of which English isn’t one. In order to study it back in the 70s and 80s, you’d have had to go to a special school that was difficult to get into, and not hugely popular either.

So yes, his spoken English was clumsy in GoF when he was 18, and he probably never lost the accent, but 1) his written English was likely much better (see also: exchanging letters with Hermione for years), and 2) his mastery of the language will have improved pretty rapidly once he made friends who spoke it. The level you see in GoF, animated discussions with Hermione and all, is his default level without having studied English in any capacity, so to think it would stay that way into his adult years is not doing the man justice.

Also him using present continuous at any stage instead of simple present tense makes no sense, considering it’s 1) more complex, and 2) does not exist in Bulgarian, his native language. So I’m not even engaging with that.

Anyway, how has all this informed the way I write him? For one, I mostly focus on the post-SWW period, when he’s: 

travelled quite widely in connection with his international career, making a lot of friends from different countries;

been pen-pals with Hermione and kept in touch with Fleur for a number of years;

chosen to settle in the UK in the aftermath of the war.

What all this means is that he’s had a lot more practice reading, writing, and speaking in English, and his words are likely to flow a lot more smoothly, as well as picking up some colloquialisms from his teammates. As for his accent, not doing the whole ‘vos’ thing is a very conscious choice. I don’t shy from a phonetic accent (see also: Alastor), but on the one hand, that’s not what my accent sounds like so I find it hard to reproduce, and two, I think it’s borderline comical, tbh. Also it makes him sound like Otto von Chriek, but that’s neither here nor there.

What I do instead is, I try and limit his vocabulary and the length of his sentences. I’m aware my command of English is above and beyond what he’s likely to attain, so I don’t make him sound like me. I mess up the odd tense and preposition, throw in the odd expression that doesn’t exist in English, make him pause and think a lot about what he says, etc. And that’s it, folks. That’s how actual Bulgarian people speak English. Compared to the other languages he’s fluent in, it’s really not a difficult one to pick up.

What I’m trying to put across here is that the whole stereotype of Eastern Europeans being stupid and bad at English in itself is really harmful. For my American friends who may not be aware of European power dynamics, we are some of the latest additions to the EU and have received tons of backlash from western Europe. Polish, Romanian and Bulgarian immigrants have been racialised by the media, particularly in the UK, and written off as cheap labour/benefit fraudsters. Hell, a lot of people who campaigned and voted for Brexit directly blame us for a lot of the UK’s issues, like the state of the National Health Service (actually due to Conservative party cuts under the guise of austerity) and a poor job market (driven by a shitty fucking economy, and not at all helped by the nearly inevitable Brexit-related recession that’s on its way).

If you want to know more about why that's a massive issue, just hmu, I can go on for days, but in terms of Viktor, I refuse to perpetuate JKR’s subconscious biases against Eastern Europeans by making him sound like some sort of illiterate idiot in my own writing. He was Durmstrang's champion, and as such we have to assume he was reasonably intelligent. Quiet, reserved, lacking confidence in his language skills, nervous around Hermione—definitely. Stupid and bumbling, not so much.
