365 Marvel Comics Paper Cut-Out SuperHeroes - One Hero, Every Day, All Year…
December 8th - Shanna The She-Devil
Shanna O’Hara-Plunder was born in Zaire, Africa, the daughter of American expatriates and animal conservationists. When Shanna was a child, her parents went off to hunt a leopard who had become sick and gone rogue. Herein, Shanna’s father accidentally shot and killed her mother. The tragedy left an indelible mark on Shanna and she dedicated herself to animal rights and the abolishment of guns.
Shanna traveled to America for university and became an expert zoologist and animal behavioralist. She additionally excelled at athletics, becoming a highly accomplished swimmer, gymnast and runner. Following her graduation, Shanna took a position at the Central Park Municipal Zoo. Tragedy struck again when a guard at the zoo shot and killed a leopard who had just given birth to twin cubs. Shanna quit her job and absconded with the two cubs to a game reserve in Zambia where she raised them herself. She fashioned a primitive outfit from the pelt of the slain leopard in the hopes that the cubs would think of her as their mother (which oddly enough they did).
Shanna would go on to have numerous adventures throughout the Congo, battling wildlife poachers and various other villains. Her skills, savageness in battle and the manner of her dress led to her often being referred to as ‘Shanna The She-Devil.’
Some time later, Shanna shared an adventure with Ka-Zar the Savage that saw the pair battling an evil sorcerer named Malgato. Shanna and Ka-Zar fell in love and were later married in the Savage Land. The couple would go on to have many more adventures. She and Ka-Zar had a son whom they named Mathew.
Shanna was later killed in battle while fighting alongside Wolverine. Amadeus Cho utilized the blood of the Man-Thing to resurrect Shanna and being brought back to life in this manner created a connection between Shanna and the essence of the Savage Land. She was suddenly imbued with tremendous powers through her ability to commune with the flora and fauna of the land. These powers proved crucial in Shanna’s efforts to fend off a Cotati invasion of the Savage Land during the Empyre event.
More recently, Shanna was among those chosen by The Phoenix Force to compete for the right to wield the cosmic entity’s powers. Each contested was imbued with a portion of the Phoenix Force and then pitted against one another. Aided by Zabu the Sabertooth Tiger, Shanna defeated The American Eagle in this competition but then lost out to Echo who was ultimately chosen as the Host of the Phoenix.
The heroine first appeared in the pages of Shanna, The She-Devil #1 (1972).
