I had to read the Merchant of Venice this weekend for my college English class and it struck me just home much of the rhetoric around the character of Shylock is the same as the stuff people are saying right now.
It’s not surprising, it’s not unexpected, but seeing something written so long ago have the same things people are writing on the internet today is certainly unsettling.
Now, there is of course discourse around Shakespeare’s true intentions with Merchant. It’s possible it is a criticism of the attitudes towards Jews present at the time, it’s also possible that it represents the believes he himself held, and it is possible that there truth lies somewhere in the middle. Regardless, the attitudes and language used in the play are representative of the time.
The Jewish character is a villain quite simply because he is a Jew. He is constantly called a dog or a cur, bloodthirsty, and is likened to the devil These are words things you can see and hear in current antisemitic rhetoric.
It has just struck me that society has not advanced their views or understanding of Jews since the renaissance.
We are going to be discussing the antisemitism of the play in class on Wednesday, and I am very interested to see if my classmates will be able to identify that this is not an attitude from the past but rather hatred that many of them are actively participating in right now.

Shakespeare Weekend
William Shakespeare’s play The Merchant of Venice, is volume twenty-three of the thirty-seven volume The Comedies Histories & Tragedies of William Shakespeare, published by the Limited Editions Club (LEC) from 1939-1940. The play is believed to have been composed between 1596 and 1598, and is mentioned in Francis Meres's commonplace book in 1598. James Roberts, the printer for Shakespeare's theatre company, entered the play in the Register of the Stationers Company on July 22, 1598 and he printed the text as a quarto for the bookseller Thomas Heyes in 1600. This first edition's title page states that the play had already been acted "divers times" by the company. The Roberts/Heyes quarto became the basis of the text published in the 1623 First Folio, which adds a number of stage directions, mainly musical cues.
The LEC Merchant of Venice was illustrated with reproduced watercolors by the Greek-born French artist Rene Ben Sussan, who became a principal illustrator for LEC publications through the 1950s. In a description of the six illustrations he did for this edition, Ben Sussan writes:
The principal character in The Merchant of Venice is not Antonio, the merchant, but Shylock; therefore Shylock is portrayed on the frontispiece. . . . The plate in the first act shows the heinous figure of Shylock confronting Antonio, and Bassanio the image of perfect friendship. In the second act a merry scene of Venetian carnival and Jessica's elopement are depicted. The third illustration shows fair Portia, personifying all the beauty and intelligence of the Renaissance, and Bassanio about to choose a casket. The fourth shows the Court of Justice, the Duke surrounded by Magnificoes, Shylock and Portia in the tense contending moment of the trial. The last plate is an illustration of the garden in Belmont -- the night, the musicians, Jessica and Lorenzo express the romance, Launcelot the merriness of the epilogue.
The volumes in the set were printed in an edition of 1950 copies at the Press of A. Colish, and each was illustrated by a different artist, but the unifying factor is that all volumes were designed by famed book and type designer Bruce Rogers and edited by the British theatre professional and Shakespeare specialist Herbert Farjeon. Our copy is number 1113, the number for long-standing LEC member Austin Fredric Lutter of Waukesha, Wisconsin.

It has been a while since the last time I actually used my Tumblr LOL. Nonetheless, it's also my first time to actually translate something for this game (just sit in this hole for about 3 months). Enjoy the Shymurr's homo as usual-
Episode 1: If It's for This Shine
Murr: Shylock~
Shylock: Murr, what do you need?
Murr: Look, look! I have grown fangs and turned into Valcy!
Shylock: Joking again…
Shylock: It can't be helped. Well, allow me to get rid of you then?
Murr: Ahaha, you are gonna hit me!
Murr: I'm looking forward to it. How will Shylock kill me?
Shylock: Haha. How foolish of Valcy, to let out encouragement instead of a scream after hearing such a declaration.
Shylock: Actually, I just bought an iron stirrer from the general store in town.
Shylock: How do you like this…
Murr: Meow, it tickles!
Murr: It's nice to have my chin rubbed by your fingertips, but the stirrer also makes it feel good and cool!
Shylock: Valcy is said to be weak against iron… So, what do you think? Satisfied yet?
Murr: No, not yet! Shylock, if you want to defeat me, you will have to bring better ironwork!
Shylock: Wow, you are tough.
Shylock: Iron strong enough to knock you down… What exactly is it?
Murr: Dunno! Let's find it together!
Murr: This town is full of people who fear Valcy, they sell all kinds of iron products.
Murr: Surely there would be something that works great on me!
Episode 2: If It's for This Shine
Shylock: Murr, this shop also sells iron products.
Murr: Oh, it's an iron cage! Wooden cage is the norm, but it's rare to see an iron cage!
Shylock: Next to it… an iron doorbell that is also used to avoid Valcy? The carved pattern suits the city's atmosphere well.
Murr: Stuff around here is not enough to defeat me, Valcy…
Murr: Ah, how about this? A ring with a crimson gemstone on top!
Shylock: Oh, is it effective to use accessories as iron weapons to kill Valcy?
Murr: Of course! The ring part is made of iron!
Murr: Look, when you put it up to the sky like this, the gemstone shines and reflects the evening light. Looks beautiful.
Murr: I love this shine! I don't care if I will be destroyed by its iron ring!
Shylock: …
Shylock: If it's for the brilliance that captivates your heart, You will reach out to it even if it means destroying yourself…
Shylock: That's your answer, Valcy?
Murr: Yes! Even if my soul is shattered as a result.
Shylock: …A troublesome person.
Shylock: However, it's certainly more like you to lose your life while your eyes sparkle with jewels than to be defeated by a mere lump of iron.
Murr: Haha! That's a compliment! Well then, I'm gonna buy this ring now.
Murr: …Hey, Shylock.
Shylock: What is it?
Murr: When I get back, you can try it out with your own hands.
Murr: Try putting it on my finger and see if you can kill Valcy!

It is understood that following Ms Oberman's earlier appearances in the play at Stratford's Swan Theatre, and after a series of media interviews to promote it, she received vile abuse, some of which appeared threatening online.
Friends say she became so concerned about the transfer of the show into the West End that her representatives altered the Metropolitan Police, who took the threats so seriously they maintained a presence outside the London theatre as the play opened this week.
One member of the audience posted on X/Twitter about the presence of police officers as he attended the opening night.
He wrote: 'This is what we've come to. The police having to secure a line of theatregoers waiting to get into the Criterion Theatre to see Tracey-Ann Oberman's production of Merchant of Venice for fear of antisemitic violence. Suffice to say T-A O is a bloody hero.'
Tellingly, the actress shared the post on her own platform on X on Thursday.
After the transfer of the play to the Criterion was confirmed Oberman said: 'It has been a lifelong cherished dream of mine to bring this play to the stage in a new way, reimagining Shylock as one of the tough, no-nonsense Jewish matriarchs I grew up around.
'The love we have experienced from theatre audiences around the country for the way that this story is told has propelled us into the West End. I'm delighted that my dream has touched hearts and minds along the way. This transfer to the Criterion – which could not be more timely – will continue to spread the message that we are stronger together.'

Before the film’s release last month, Cooper’s prosthetic schnoz drew criticism from many Jews, alert to the re-emergence of a hateful caricature that had trailed them for centuries, often attached to actors. It wasn’t so long ago that gentiles playing Shylock in William Shakespeare’s “The Merchant of Venice” did so in “Jewface,” with a large and pendulous hook nose meant to telegraph animality and greed. (Shakespeare describes Shylock variously as a “wolf,” a “cur” and a “cutthroat dog.”) Whether the actor who originated the role in the 1590s wore a wax honker is unknown, but the stereotype was certainly familiar by then. In Christopher Marlowe’s nearly contemporaneous “The Jew of Malta,” the title character’s Moorish slave says, “Oh, brave master, I worship your nose for this.”
Even without the noses — and despite, in Shakespeare’s case, the mitigating poetry — both plays are viciously antisemitic. There’s a reason “The Merchant of Venice,” according to some historians, was the most produced Shakespeare play in Germany during the Third Reich. As the theater scholar Farah Karim-Cooper notes in her book “The Great White Bard” (2023), audiences are strongly influenced by disinformation onstage. In a 2010 study she cites, playgoers in Sweden, Germany and England were asked to evaluate the statement “The reason for antisemitism is the behavior of the Jews in history” both before and after seeing “Merchant.” One out of four found the statement “more correct” afterward. And Shylock was seen as a “typical” Jew by nearly a third.

Part 1:

One night, I went to the library to look for a pen I’d forgotten. 
Akira: (Oh? There’s light leaking from under the door. It’s pretty late, I wonder if anyone is still there...)

As I peeked into the room, Saku-chan, who was floating around my shoulders, moved to copy my movements.

Shino, Mitile, and Arthur: Zzz…zzz…
The three sleeping boys were Shino, Arthur, and Mitile. 
Pens, notebooks, and textbooks, were spread between their sleeping forms. 
Mitile: *Muttering*... Jeez… Dr. Figaro... 
Arthur: Lord Oz… the star-shaped pot-au-feu carrots were wonderful... 
Shino: Hehe, look at me, Faust... 
Akira (Hehe, it looks like they’re dreaming. But if they stay here, they might catch a cold…) 
Shino: Hm…? 
Mitile: *Yawn* 
Arthur: … ah, Master Sage? 
Akira: Oh, I’m glad you’re up! Just now, I was wondering if I should wake you. 
Were you all studying together? 
Shino: Yeah, there’s a test in class tomorrow. This is the final push. 
Mitile: Shino wants to surprise Faust by getting a good score! 
I also have a test coming up, so we were reviewing together. 
Arthur: When I heard about their study session, I requested to join as well. 
We were quizzing each other just now, but it seems we fell asleep without realizing. 
Akira: On top of our missions, you’re all doing your best to study too… you’re all amazing! 
Shino: Well, yeah. I used to think lectures were a meaningless waste of time but… I’ll to anything to become stronger. I don’t want regrets when I die. 
Shino flipped through the book in front of him. 
In the past, I might’ve been surprised to see him at a desk, but now it’s different. 
Underground waterways. Artificial wizards. I’m not surprised because I know of the deadly battles he’s overcome. 
Suddenly, Shinto’s grave expression shifted to a mischievous grin. 
Shino: Look, Sage. 
Akira: Woah?! What exactly is… this? 
A picture made of frightening brushstrokes covered the page he’d pointed to. 
A huge red mass covered the center, connected by long thin threads, like a spider web. 
Surrounding it, were people folded on top of each other, as if tangled in the strange threads. 
Akira: Is this… a red cocoon…?  
Arthur: Yes, this type of magical creature has been passed down through legend since ancient times. 
Though as the number of humans increases, they are forced out of their homes. I hear not many still live… 
Mitile: It seems tomorrow’s test will be about the ecology of magical creatures! 
Shino is particularly good at this. 
Shino: Yeah. This monster emits a sweet scent and makes mysterious noises in order to attract humans into its domain. 
Then, it extends thin, thread-like tendrils that suck the blood of any who approach. 
Akira: Sucks their blood… does the creature in this cocoon grow by using human blood as nutrients? 
Arthur: I believe so. They appear out of nowhere, build a nest, and spend a long time inside their cocoon…
In most cases, they are exterminated during that time, so few records exist of their actual appearance. 
Mitile: That’s kind of creepy, a blood sucking monster with an unknown appearance…
Akira: It’s almost like a scary urban legend… it’s creepy because you don’t know what you’re looking for…
Shino: Don’t worry. If it’s just a big lump, I’ll cut it in half in one strike. 
Arthur, Akira, and Mitile: So cool! 
Shino: Hehe, that’s right. Though just to be safe, let’s review one more time. 
Arthur: Yes, I’ll join you as well! 
Mitile: Me too! 
Akira: I see everyone still has energy! In that case, I’ll bring you some tea and sweets for your study session! 
Shino: Oh, that’s really nice of you. 
I got a ton of sleep so this’ll be fun. 
I’m looking forward to the test tomorrow.

Akira: Shino, once more, thank you for your hard work! 
Arthur: What a wonderful outcome! It’s probably the best score so far. 
Shino: Well classroom lectures are nothing compared to hands-on practice. Experience and are important too. 
Faust: Don’t get too comfortable just because everything worked out this time. Though certainly, it was quite an exceptional score. 
Saku-chan: …! 
Akira: I think Saku-chan is praising you. You worked hard together, right? 
Shino: If it’s an achievement that even a spirit can understand, it means I deserve a great reward, right Faust? 
Faust: Well, you did perform exceptionally. Are there any famous lemon pie shops around here? 
Akira: Arthur recommended one. It’s only a little further down that way, but I didn’t know there was a town like this nearby. 
It’s probably because of the old buildings, but there’s a really calm, nice atmosphere. 
Arthur: That is because the “City of Honor” is a city with a long and rich history. 
The lemon pie shop I visited on my last incognito visit was delicious, so I’d love to recommend it to you, Shino. 
Shino: It’s probably not as good as Lady Blanchett’s, but I can try it and see if it compares. 
Let’s bring some for Mitile too, he has a test today too, after all. 
White: Hello everyone! I apologize for the wait! 
Oz: … 
Akira: White, Oz. 
Arthur: Welcome back! Were you able to buy the heart-shaped churros? 
White: Everything went smoothly, but afterwards, something caught my eye, and we ended up on a detour, right Oz? 
Oz: I was only there to carry your baggage. 
White: Don’t say such dreary things. Once in a while, it’s nice to tour a new city together. 
We’ll return to the Manor with the new sweets we bought. 
And, aren’t you planning to partake in Snow’s afternoon tea, while he keeps an eye on the Northern Wizards? 
Oz: Have you only just now received this news? 
Faust: Honestly, I was under the impression that Oz was invited here by Arthur but… 
Arthur: No, I was the one who extended the invitation. 
This town boasts many beautiful historic buildings, so I thought Lord Oz could enjoy it as well. 
Besides, we’ve all undertaken so many missions as of late, so it’d be nice if we could use this opportunity to rest. 
Oz: …You are who continues to carry out official duties. 
Once you have settled your business, rest early today. 
Arthur: I will! 
White: He’s not so obedient anymore though~ 
Shino: … 
Akira: Shino, is something wrong? 
When I looked over, I saw Shino standing in front of a store. 
The elegant shop was lined with delicately decorated stationary, colored glass, lamps, and tableware. 
Shino reached for the corner of a shelf and traced the cover of a book. 
Shino: “Bernard’s Legend of Heroes”…
Akira: Bernard… is that the title of the book? Is it some kind of biography? 
Faust: It’s a heroic legend passed down through this city. There should be records of it in the Central Country’s history books. 
Arthur: Indeed. Bernard is the name of a famous general who ruled this area during revolutionary times. 
In honor of his bravery, this town was named after his achievements. 
Shino: A hero whose deeds were published and whose name remains even today… did you ever meet him, Faust? 
Faust: Not really, his time was years before I was born. 
Shino: Hm… 
Shino picked up the book and flipped through the pages before turning it around and tracing the cover once more. 
Faust: …Alright. I’ll buy it for you, so be sure to read it. 
Shino: Are you sure? 
Faust: Reading is a good habit, so take this chance to develop it… 
???: Wait, wait! 
*thump* 
Oz: …
???: … ow! 
A boy jumped out of a nearby alley, and slammed into Oz. 
Immediately, coins scattered in all directions. 
Oz: … 
???: … S-sorry… 
Akira: Are you alright? Let me help you with your money… 
???: No, I can do it myself…! 
The boy, who looked at Oz with fear, before crouching down to collect his coins, seemed to be around Shino and Arthur’s age.
Murr: Oh? It’s Master Sage! 
Shylock: Oh? It seems everyone has gathered together. 
Akira: I didn’t expect to see you both here… 
White: What? Have you ever visited this town before? 
Murr: Yep! Im chasing this kid right now! 
He took my wallet~! 
Akira and Arthur: What?! 
Boy in a hat: ah, no, this is…
Shino: Are you a pickpocket? 
Shino grabbed the shaking boy’s wrist, before turning him around. 
Boy in a hat: ! 
Murr: Ah, Shino caught him! 
Shino: How unfortunate for you. You should be more careful about choosing your targets. 
Faust: Shino, don’t be too rough. 
Shino: Yeah, I know. 
Shylock: Wonderful, what a bright and youthful look. 
Shino: Thank you. What business did you have in this town? 
Shylock: We came to stock up on alcohol and visit our favorite cafe. There are many hideaways in such an old town. 
That’s where we had an unexpected encounter with this young man. 
White: I see, but you aren’t the type to allow yourself to be robbed. 
You could’ve stopped anything with magic. Don’t play around with his heart too much. 
Akira: What…?  
Murr: After all, that kid picked up the wallet that I just happened to drop, and started messing with it. 
Peeking inside, looking around, with changing expressions, behaviors, and gazes…
Wouldn’t it be a shame to stop the movements of the heart that manifest in all sorts of ways? 
Faust: So you purposefully allowed him to take it? 
Murr: Yes? When I called out to him just before he was gonna stuff it in his pocket, he freaked out and ran away. 
I felt like chasing so I did! 
Shylock: It’s like watching a cat in front of a mouse. 
I am at fault for failing to stop him sooner. Allow me to apologize on Murr’s behalf. 
Akira: Not at all but… why would you do something like theft? 
The boy probably realized that he couldn’t escape, so he stopped struggling. 
His deep gray eyes peeking out from the brim of the hat caught sight of Arthur, and he gasped. 
Boy in a hat: You are…

In Shakespeare’s play The Merchant of Venice, Shylock is a Jew and moneylender in Venice who agrees to lend a sum of money to his enemy the merchant Antonio, a Christian and antisemite who has spat at, insulted, and humiliated him on dozens of occasions in the past - with the caveat of demanding a pound of his flesh as security on the loan. After his merchant ships are reported lost in a storm, the now-bankrupt Antonio defaults on the loan, and Shylock, adamant on claiming his revenge, pursues obtaining his pound of flesh in a legal court. The heroine of the play, Portia, points out that Antonio agreed to give up a pound of his flesh, but not his blood, and Shylock cannot gain his pound of flesh without drawing blood, something his contract does not allow for. Thus Shylock’s revenge is thwarted, and for his “villainy” he is punished with giving up his wealth and his forced conversion to Christianity. Although his motives stem from the very human feelings of humiliation and vengeance, his dogged pursuit of revenge has been held up as supporting racist views of Jews as greedy and vicious. The “pound of flesh” has become a famous phrase in culture as meaning any unnecessarily painful punishment or condition in a contract.
Ezra Pound was a Christian early-20th century poet who was a major figure in early modernist poetry. He was also violently antisemitic, and a fascist collaborator in Italy during WWII. During the war and the Holocaust in Italy, he made hundreds of paid radio broadcasts for the Italian government attacking the United States, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Great Britain, international finance, munitions makers and mongers, and Jews, among others, as causes, abettors and prolongers of the world war, as a result of which he was arrested in 1945 by American forces in Italy on charges of treason. Deemed unfit to stand trial, he was incarcerated in St. Elizabeths psychiatric hospital in Washington, D.C., for over 12 years. After a campaign by fellow writers, he was released in 1958, and lived in Italy until his death in 1972. His work remains controversial for his political and economic views.
In the song, a purgatorial, phantasmal Ezra Pound appears to the unnamed singer as a skeleton sitting on their bed, asking the singer to spare a pound of their flesh to cover his bared bones. This imagery, of an antisemite using the words of a (fictional) Jew, turns the famous phrase on its head and transforms its meaning into a powerful indictment of antisemitism through the concept of post-mortem spiritual torment and poetic justice.
Regina Spektor is a Jew of Russian heritage, and has tackled antisemitism in several of her songs, including “Pound of Flesh” and “Ink Stains”.
