after a 3.5-year hiatus from gifmaking, I re-learned how to gif at the end of November and have since gained quite a few new followers and also confirmed I will be on this website until the day I die. Many of you came right as I lost my job, dealt with the fallout and unemployment, found a new job, and started working... and for some reason have stayed through all of that?? So I decided to do a very randomly-timed follower appreciation event because you all have really kept me going these last few months.

I want to share a special thank you to the @tmsource team (aka @burningblake, @robintunney, @robntunney, and @lizzybennets) for organizing the secret santa event that motivated me to start giffing again, and to Britt especially for her incredible scene pack that meant i actually had shit to gif 😂

i tried really hard not to choose all comp sets, but those take the most effort and therefore are what i'm prouder of than a standard set, but regardless...

here are my top 10 fave creations of the year:

bts chapter 1 insta feed // this was an insanely taxing project and is probably the most work i've ever put into anything, but i was really inspired to do it. it took about a week (one day for each panel) and was repetitive, i literally threw out my back by day 3 from sitting working on it that my body was in SO MUCH PAIN, but i wanted to get everything right and make it make sense which is why i wrote up a detail post breaking it down and explaining every decision that went into this. i still intend to make this a series and do one dedicated to their japanese discography (i actually started on one before i published this but didn't like the concept) and for their solo work, but it doesn't feel like the right time yet as things continue to release. but i look forward to it!

cheesy bts valentine cards // this was purposely corny, but the response was unbelievable! i had fun working on it and was so happy it made people laugh and smile. the tags were a joy to read on this post and it's my fourth most popular gifset ever. thank you!

bts guide to troubled birds // yet another corny idea, but i get a kick out of making silly comps and was inspired to make this. i started with jimin's as an experiment because his poem was the easiest to choose and built the rest of it from there, carefully deciding which poem to apply to each member and recreating them from scratch. i love celebrating their chaos in fun ways, so this was nice!

jungkook's sensitive tear ducts // sometimes i get really random comp ideas and spontaneously start making something with no plan. this was one of those times and it is now my third most popular gifset since making this blog in 2020 lol. ofc i'd never gif him upset about anything serious, so i only chose moments that didn't feel inappropriate to include to keep this set lighthearted and humorous.

long live bts (10th anniversary set) // i always knew i wanted to make something with the lyrics of that song because every word of it reminds me of their story. the 10th anniversary was perfect since it literally says "it was the end of a decade". i wanted the set to just be really simple so i went with a more desaturated look and focused more on choosing a scene from each year that fit the lyric per that gif.

love me again mv // this was my first time bothering to gif a music video in 4k. i usually avoid it bc it slows my computer down and takes a lot longer (i also have to reconvert the youtube download to a different file type to get it to play in my kmplayer, it's a whole process) but i waited a few days after it came out because i originially didn't think i could color it when it premiered so i just didn't gif it. but i gave it a try anyway when i didn't feel so pressured and i really like how crisp they came out.

jungkook's bday set // i didn't have a plan for this when i started, but i searched a lot for inspo and finally found something i felt like i could make something with so i came up with this very barbie-esque rendition for jungkook that i'm still very fond of. i purposely didn't write happy birthday on it anywhere so it could be shared year-round. it's probably my fave set i made all year and everyone seemed to like it too!

jimin's bday set // this was originally just going to include songs from FACE, but i decided it didn't celebrate jimin's work as a whole if i didn't include all his solo songs/endeavors so it turned into a big monster. i like how it came out though!

standing next to you mv // this year i was introduced to HD master files, so instead of rushing to download a new mv from youtube and giffing it fast, i'd wait for a higher quality rip from apple music to show up online. the difference is quite astounding. i made gifs with master files for all three of jk's music videos this year (seven, 3D), but i like how this one turned out the best.

vmin comp // just felt like giffing my two favorite people before they left and needed to channel my sad emotions into something before seeing them seperate for so long. i included moments i've giffed before and ones i've never had the chance to gif. i could have made this post so much longer but forced myself to stop lol. i like the pink and blue colors in it a lot <3 i miss them so much

hi jenna gif questions for u 💜 what's your favorite part of making gifs? what's the most valuable thing/tip/trick you've learned? what's some of your favorite gif sets you've made?

hi ida!!!! sorry i took a couple days to answer this i wanted to wait until i had some time to think about it before i answer! i loooove these questions tho so thank you so much for sending them 💜💜

my favorite part about making gifs is probably coloring and like...that moment when i get the gif to look exactly how i want it to. i like to play around with coloring and try a lot of different things with it and that can be so fun! i think over the last like 6-8 months my coloring has really improved a lot and i've been having a lot of fun learning new ways to do things! but i actually had a really hard time coming up with an answer for this question because i mostly enjoy the entire process! the only part that i don't really enjoy is picking out the frames for each gif. i always start with way too many and then i have to cut stuff out and i hate that part. also it's reaaally hard sometimes to not end up with like 20 gifs cause there's so much i want to include!!!

okay im gonna cheat on this one and give a few things i've learned since i started that have been sooooo valuable to me. first is the importance of having a good quality download to start with. i think my gifs got significantly better when i finally downloaded all of the episodes in 1080p instead of using the screen recording on netflix like i had been before. second sharpening is so important! i did not do any sharpening on my first gifs i made! sharpening makes the gifs loook sooo sharp and crisp and pretty. third and kind of similar to sharpening was learning/figuring out how to use the camera raw filter. there's sooooo much you can do with camera raw filter (coloring sharpening lightening). and finally one thing i learned that i think made my coloring look significantly better was to try not to lighten the gif too much and/or to figure out ways to lighten darker gifs without it messing up the background too much (sometimes when they're lightened too much it will like pixelate the background and it looks awful)

and finally (in order of when they were made from oldest to newest) here are links to some of my favorite gifsets:

Bloody Dean Throughout the Seasons Set - this one actually came out really good considering the fact that it was made only a month after i first started making gifs! if i remember correctly it's the first set that i ever used sharpening on.

6x20 F+TM King Set - this one is a favorite mostly just because i love the song so much and tmwwbk is one of my favorite episodes. i think some of my favorite sets to make are the ones that i add lyrics to.

2022 Nov 5th Set - i was really happy with how this one came out! it's so hard to get gifs from episodes over different seasons to look the same! and this one had gifs from 12 different seasons! also i think this was the first set i ever made that got over 1000 notes which i remember being really excited about!

Laughing Dean Set - this one is a favorite purely based on the content of the set. it feels like injecting serotonin every time i look at it<3

1x12 Faith Set - another one based on the content of the set. i just love this episode so much.

Season 9 Dean Set - i LOVE the coloring in this set! and season 9 dean is so beloved to me. he is just so beautiful and bloody and sad.

2023 Cas Day Set - another f+tm lyric set! i love the space overlay that i added and the blue-pink of the coloring so much!

4x18 Destiel Every Episode Set - i loooove this scene so much! this gif series has by far been more popular than any of the other gifs that i post and this set is definitely the most popular in the series. no other set has ever even come close to getting 4k notes like this one did. also i really like the purple coloring a lot<3

FINALLY I finished this meme I’ve seen other mtas builders been doing, couldn’t help but try it out and share a bit more about jay :3

Some silly explanations for the symbolism choices under keep reading!!💖

Lilac: I usually connect pink and black colors with jay, but I can’t help but make Lilac her symbolic color, being her favorite color and all. Esp with the picture I chosen, It’s her favorite time of the day when the sky becomes purple.

Eureka Dunes Evening Primrose: Primroses actually have a special connection to Jay’s family, dating back to her great grandparents. I couldn’t help but pick this primrose specifically because of where it blooms, the desert. Primroses in general symbolizes new beginnings, which I feel like fits well with a lot of moments not only in Jay’s life, but the sandrock story in general.

Highland Cow: I actually have a headcanon with @sandrockianblues that we like to think highland cows are actually highwind cows in the my time series. And with that, I love the idea Highwind cows are the first creatures that Jay fell in love with when she moved to the free cities. Jay loves a lot of bovines, but I couldn’t help but keep this one in after @sandara-and-coco said that Jay and Sandara share the same spirit animal. ;o;✨💞

Keychains: Even though it’s a silly add-on I put in some of her outfits, these keychains do have a special place her jay’s life. It was one of first things she started making to give to her best friend, Ethan, and now it’s one of her gesture of showing how she sees someone as her friend.

Chemtrails Over the Country Club: This one is meh to be honest, I always have a hard time finding songs that connect to my ocs. If anything, the whole songs doesn’t really connect to her but just certain lyrics out of context.

Yearning: Now this one is a bit.. personal for jay, but like I said in her sheet, that she wants something new in her life, and of course she gets it with sandrock! But there are other things she yearns deep down, like a past she’ll never get back and all, BUT atleast she gets over that one after certain events in her life LMAO.

this is a popular song that came out a few years ago but i recently fell in love with it when i heard it used in the trailer for a thai film 'My Boo' starring Bow Maylada, Gee Sutthirak and Thanaerng.

this song i actually first heard from Kidnap! pilot trailer but i never looked up the lyrics until recently and god it is so MingJoe coded. this song is a nice monologue talking to the heart and asking why it keeps falling in love, even though it knows it’s only going to get burned. like the inability to get someone out of your heart and still loving someone even though they've hurt you so bad before ಥ_ಥ

6. เพียงพอ (Just Enough) - Potato

watching The Believers on Netflix really sent me down a spiral of listening to Potato (a Thai rock band). I love this song so much because it's a refreshing addition to Potato's usual collection of 'unrequite love, breakup' songs.

i've been on a spiral of listening to old music i love so i'm sharing this mini commentary i made on this song a while back.

so 'the creeking' is based on tấm cám aka the vietnamese ver of cinderella. specifically, the part after vietnamese cinderella (tấm) was murdered by her stepmother & sister, she reincarnated into a bird, but then got killed AGAIN and she reincarnated into a weaving loom (insane, you just gotta read it, after she became a weaving loom, she got BURNED and she reincarnated into a freaking tree). but the simple gist is, when tấm reincarnated into a loom, the loom kept making noises to threaten her step sister as if to remind her step sister of the evil deed she did to tấm. the creeking may at first glance be a simple retell of this part of the story in tấm cám but it also parallels directly with hoàng thùy linh's life story. from the mire (the excessive hate train from her "scandal" when she was a minor and victim of revenge pornography), both hoàng thùy linh and tấm rose up to put their name down in history. ending the song with the statement that they'll survive no matter how many times evil forces (the press/media) try to bring tấm/htl down. the creeking is just such an empowering and feminist anthem like i cannot stress enough. hoàng thùy linh is currently going through her 2nd hate train rn and i honestly wish her the best bc i fully believe she'll make it through this cycle of vilification again.

i truly love this song because even though hoang thuy linh is more popular for her tiktok hit see tinh (sped up) aka ting ting tang tang, her first full album Hoàng is literally a masterpiece full of songs based on Viet culture/folklores. THE viet pop album of the decade for me tbh.

8. I LOVE U - MANBO ft. NAMVEE

viet hiphop hasn't been on my rotation for a few months but i always trust manbo to deliver a good rap on a pop rock beat.

9. Building Outside The Building - TNT

while TNT is known for their youthful, hopeful, lovely music, it's these hard hitting songs that makes TNT music so attractive to me. cpop having better hard hitting songs than kpop these days is killing me. wishing i could steal all the cpop demos and send them to my fave kpop bgs.

10. Ponytail (KR version) - VANNER

Hey guys, just wanted to pop by and say thanks to everyone who participated in my 2.5k celebration, i’ve finished all my requests that were given to me (you can find them all here) they’ve all been real fun to make, made me try new things that turned out really nice, gave me some more ideas for other gifsets i’ve got in the back of my mind for the future. 

With that to say just because the celebration over doesn't mean i’ll stop taking requests, my requests door is always open (might sometimes take me few days to reply or make due to work but yeah always open), always looking for inspiration for new gifsets so yeah if you have anything in mind hit me up.

Like i said above i’ve got some ideas in my mind for gifsets too, an Eddie gifset springs to mind, possibly a Max one too as i’m listening to an MCR song with some lyrics that kinda fit her in season 4, there’s also a series i want to do revolving around my new stranger things themed tarot deck that i got last month, so yeah, i got ideas spirally in my mind right now. That’s not to mention i also wanna make some headers for you guys too, just don’t know where to start with those haha.

It's something I realised long back but I never had the chance to inflict the angst on anyone else lmao. you added the cherry on top with how you worded it "literally a little brother begging his big brother not to leave him, and knowing on some level that he'll never be able to make him change his mind" 🥺 in some way he would've known right at the moment nairobi and helsinki emerged alone so seeing him going from denial to desperation. hurts

(pt 2) YES, brotherssss!!! Oh, the fact that Andrés is so selfish and narcissistic otherwise just makes the hermanos bond even more special to me?? it hits different than if they'd just been relatively normal/good characters, idk. And yes that's such older brother behaviour of him!! I will tell you some happier observations of mine this time. One of my favourite "older bro" things Andrés does in the series, when he and Sergio sit down to drink together, he ALWAYS pours wine for Sergio first. In the bella ciao scene, his wedding scene in s4, even s3 he literally wakes up Sergio to come have breakfast with them, which means he didn't even allow either Martin or Tatiana to start without his hermanito lol. It's a very sweet minor detail that melts my heart. I can totally imagine them in the Toledo house, pretending they don't know each other but then andrés does little things like these, serving Sergio first or preparing coffee for his brother just the way he likes it before making his own cup :') OH, the feels. Yes, I agree, I definitely think the Bella Ciao lyrics are foreshadowing, and that is exactly what happened in the end. (I have been struck by that thought too, more than once 🥲 it's heartbreaking isn't it? especially when you consider that oslo/moscow had their loved ones with them when they died + a funeral. nairobi had a funeral too. tokio had rio with her before she died. but andrés had none of that, sergio was miles away and then ofc they had to escape leaving him behind... don't think about the guantanamera scene lyrics in this context too. Well, I can't blame you, angst is made to be shared! Poor Sergio, he really is in denial at the beginning, huh, insisting Andrés should get into the tunnel... and that's another thing that gets me, because truly there was no time, waiting for Andrés and not blowing up the tunnel basically meant getting captured, and yet Sergio who's usually so cautious and always aware of every risk just refuses to see it. Andrés must get into the tunnel and to safety! And then he gets more and more desperate when it really becomes apparent that it isn't going to happen :(

Oh, I definitely agree! Part of the appeal of big brother Andrés and of their bond imo is the contrast between their usual demeanor and how they behave around each other. When they're together they're a big brother and a little brother, you know 🥺🥺 OOOH thanks for sharing! I don't know if I ever noticed that (if I did I forgot) it really is sweet! I'm smiling a bit at the thought of Andrés not allowing Martín and Tatiana to have breakfast because the most precious hermanito in the world is not there yet! I love that thought! Please never apologize about how long your message gets, as far as I'm concerned it only means I have more stuff to enjoy (also thank you for reminding me I can put this under a cut, I probably should lol) It's kind of amusing how we can switch between oh no Andrés was killed and Sergio was completely helpless and awww nice little childhood memories but hey it's great how they give us tragic and happy thoughts both! I absolutely agree about Sergio having the most stiff yet adorable dance moves ever, at some point he's basically like "ok, since I'm doing this with my big brother I'm... actually enjoying it, but this doesn't take all my awkwardness away" and it's so CUTE, Alvaro plays it so well! What is Gallavich Week?

Gallavich Week is a full week especially dedicated to Ian x Mickey fan works. Each day has a different theme, and people will post their works according to the theme of the day.

How do I participate?

You don’t have to subscribe to anything or announce what you’re doing, you just have to post your work on the appropriate day and tag us using @gallavichthings. It’s important that you tag us properly so that we can be sure to see your post and reblog it.

What types of works are accepted?

Any kind of original fan work is accepted, including but not limited to: fanart, fanfiction (no minimum words required), graphics, gifs and gifsets, videos, and fanmixes.

When can I start posting?

We’ll always make one initial post for each day, at 12am GMT (check here to see when that is in your time zone). After that, post away!

Can I still participate even if I don’t have a Tumblr account?

Absolutely! Just submit something here.

Can I post on Twitter or Instagram?

You can post anywhere you want! On Twitter and IG, we encourage you to use the hashtag #GW2021 and we’ll RT you (we do not have an IG account though, sorry). That being said, we do encourage you to post here as well, so it can be seen by more people (all gallavichthings reblogs get cross-posted to Twitter automatically anyway).

Can I post something that I’ve already posted before?

No, sorry. The works should have been created specifically for GW. You can, however, create a sequel or a different version of a previous work.

Can I post something that is not in English?

Of course. Just make sure that it is original. or that you have the original author’s permission (and, in that case, link to the original too).

Can I make R-rated works?

Yes, just please give any necessary warnings and tell us the rating at the very beginning of the post. If the post is visual (like a fanart or a gifset), it would be nice for you to also tag it #NSFW. Please remember that Tumblr now has stricter rules regarding that type of content, so if the post is really NSFW I’d suggest hosting it somewhere else and just posting a link to it.

Can I post something that’s AU?

Of course! There are specific days for AUs, but feel free to post them on other days as well as long as they fit the theme.

Can I post supernatural works, mpreg, or genderbends?

Yes! But if it’s a fic, please include it in the warnings.

Can I post more than one work?

Definitely! The more, the merrier. You can post as many works as you want, on as many days as you want, be it one post per day or ten on the same day. Anything goes!

Can I post on more than one day? Do I have to make something for each day?

Again, the more, the merrier! You can post on only one or all days if you wish!

Can I make one work that fits two or more themes?

Sure thing. I only ask that you post it on the day of the last theme included. For example, if you are posting a work that includes the theme from Day 1 and the theme from Day 4, post it on day 4 (just make sure to tell us that it includes both).

Can I write a multi-chaptered fanfiction?

Yes, and you don’t have to post everything either. When you do, just be sure to include either a masterpost, or the links to the previous chapters in the beginning.

Can I include other characters/pairings in my work?

Yes, as long as Gallavich is still the focus.

What if I can’t finish on time?

The Gallavich fandom is ALWAYS happy to see new fan material, so just post it when you’re done and tag us, ok? The same goes for people who can’t finish a work on the assigned theme day; you can still post it on a different day during GW, just make it clear which day it was made for.

Is there a contest?

No. It was an idea once, but most people didn’t want it, and felt a bit intimidated by it.

Disclaimer: While I’ve watched spn since 2014 and started watching live mid-s9, I only seen the show completely through once and went off of memory and my particularly enriched Tumblr enclosure to consider connections to Cas’s character arc. 

It’s all MIKA (some w/ features tho), but song names will be bolded, my thoughts and season or scene connections next to them, and on occasion, screencaps or lyrics added for emphasis. Parts with a * next to them are my personal favorites. 

Rain -> early seasons Cas. falling Cas. give this poor angel a break. 

Talk About You -> Cas being ANNOYING AS HELL to all other angels in the garrison because he has a crush on Dean.

Promiseland* (edit and addition brought to you by the genius of @hocuspocushogeschool) -> this song is SOOOOO Cas. It is the strong righteous soldier Cas 😤 again becoming disillusioned with heaven, god, and his purpose. It makes me think of s4-s6 Cas, but I think whatever part of Cas is represented in this song is something core to his character that lasts till the end. So get this:

Last Party* -> Endverse!Cas ESPECIALLY but also a little bit Cas in all apocalypse scenarios. I See You -> Still Beautiful Still Dean Winchester. Think of s6 invisiCas. Think of Cas rescuing Dean from Hell, rebuilding him. Then getting to know him, and beginning to doubt, beginning to fall.

Rio** -> Upbeat but reminds me of how Cas is ALWAYS going through it damn.  Anyway this song has everything for your Cas projection needs. I thought it would just be funny at first b/c I was thinking of the fact that Hunter Corp Sam & Dean canonically fucked off to Brazil but !!!!! Consider s6 Cas and how they tried to make him a villain. Also, the Casifer arc. 

Good Wife***-> the song that started it all. upbeat but my GOD, the YEARNING. Basically s6, 6x20, and just CAS. This song honestly speaks for itself and THEY NEVER DID GET TO KNOW THE GOOD LIFE DID THEY ;-; Also ALSO these lyrics??? but especially yellow highlight:

Me, Myself -> This is also break-up-esque, but could also be heard as depressed Cas in the Empty post-confession, thinking Dean doesn’t reciprocate and feeling hopeless. It has Spanish and made me think deancas Spanish dub, but it’s really more like trying to move on vibes. Has a line in Spanish about broken wings

Oh, anon, sending you hugs ❤️ I'm sad! Very sad but I can't really parse out the mush of emotions cause I'm also like......alright?

I dunno. Tbh it's mostly the fandom space and community and the joy I have here with everyone that I would be more aggrieved to lose.

Like if I had my Tumblr deleted and had no way to share this show and connect with you all? I know that would upset me more and alter my experience of the show hugely. 

So then to me that tells me I just want to continue creating and being silly with my friends? And I do have lots of friends here. My fandom experience has luckily been nothing but joyful and lifted me on very dark days ever since i started being active over 2 years ago.

And I know people think fandoms change a lot after a show ends - and sure! It does quieten down! - but for me the things that I come here for are not solely connected to waiting for a show to come back on. I come here for fanfic, discussions, gifsets, analysis, silly edits, chats - these are not things I think have to change? But that's just me. I understand others are different.

I think about how I watched Black Sails for the first time last year and that show had a small but very passionate fanbase much like ours. When i dipped in to the tag, i saw new beautiful gifsets, new fanfic, friends interacting and making jokes, new engagement, and those people being lovely to me who stumbled in with brand new excitement. The show finished 4 years ago - but people are still having fun!

I think back to the two hiatuses I was here for and how much I loved those periods of time. And it wasn't just because of the promise of new content, I used to make dodgy lyric gifsets every day just because. Bad edits. Get excited over snippets of fanfic that we all go crazy for. Snuggle up every night with a fic series. I remember cancelling a yoga class when my fave fic updated and I just wanted to get home and read it. The stuff we make here is its own fabulous thing.

So this is a long winded way of saying I'm sad. I'll cry again. I'll probably cry a lot when it’s over. I’ll miss the theories and anticipation and Pepe Silvia madness over bts pics and the ‘anything could happen’ of there being a new season and the way the show has sort of been my constant through a long time of turmoil.

But when the show is over, it doesn't mean there is no new content to look forward to.

The content we can enjoy and look forward to just changes, that’s all. It becomes whatever we make. And this fandom makes fuckin gold.

So really, how lucky are we? ❤️

Link a gifset you’re really proud of:

I am really proud of this Gu Xiang x Cao Weining gifset. It was the first time I used a moving ink overlay and my first time using song lyrics. Making it was really fun for me because I used lyrics from one of my favorite songs and it was a challenge choosing scenes and putting everything together. 

Link a gifset where you tried something new:

I’ll chose this Howl’s Moving Castle x Word of Honor gifset. It was my first time trying out the handwriting effect. It wasn’t as hard as I thought it was going to be, it was just tedious. 

Link a gifset that features your favourite character or celebrity:

My most favorite fictional character is Jiang Cheng, so I’ll share this Twin Prides set I made. I like him across all adaptations so I think its also fitting that I included some donghua scenes in that set.

I’ve giffed only one of my favorite celebrities, so I’ll share this set of Wang Yibo as Lan Wangji ft. Lan Xichen. (Liu Haikuan is also a great actor!)

I guess this Nirvana in Fire edit? (Caution NiF spoilers.) I think I’ve improved a lot since I made that set, but its one of my favorite scenes from the drama so I hold that set close to my heart.

This other Nirvana in Fire edit! I got the idea while rewatching the episode, and really wanted to make it. The execution didn’t turn out exactly how I wanted it to, but I liked working with the scenes.

I’m currently working on a “50 days, 50 episodes” series for The Untamed. I know it’ll take me more than 50 days to complete it because of a couple breaks I took, but anyway, here is the most recent edit from that series.

I think I’m going to have to go with this Scumbag System edit. Its nothing fancy, but BingQiu is my current second-most favorite ship. So thinking about them makes me happy, and there’s something about SY!SQQ’s chaotic-ness that I love.

I made this Wei Wuxian + outfits set for @lethes! It was a fun challenge because I wanted to find a happy medium between showcasing both WWX’s robes and capturing fun/notable scenes.
