Beta Editor Overview

This post was originally made on January 7, 2023, and was last updated on January 14, 2023.

After seeing quite a few posts expressing confusion/frustration over the beta editor, trying to understand new features and find where old options have moved to, I thought I'd write up an overview of the new editor, showing the various changes it has from legacy.

My main goal is to show people that the new editor not nearly as bad as they may have heard. You'll have a few days of weirdness and confusion, and then you'll be used to it. The beta editor does have some bugs... but so does the legacy editor. We've all just gotten used to legacy and know how to work around its quirks. After a couple weeks with beta, you'll be familiar with it and know how to do the same.

FAQ

I'm putting this part above the read more to quickly answer the questions I see asked most often.

How do I cut posts with the new editor? — You need to get an extension called XKit Rewritten and use Trim Reblogs. Once you have that installed, save the post to your drafts and click the scissors icon along the bottom of the post. This will open a window that allows you to remove earlier reblogs. If you run into funky issues, see my ginormous post here.

Where is blockquote? — Blockquote is now called indented. There are two ways to reach it. Option 1: select your text, open the dropdown menu, and choose indented. Option 2: type / on an empty line, select indented, and type your text.

Where is small text? — Select your text and click the small S in brackets. I recommend doing this at the end of writing your post, as it can be finicky otherwise. The old keyboard shortcut for small text does not work anymore; the new shortcut is CTRL/CMD + COMMA.

Where are bullets? — Select your text, open the dropdown menu, and choose bulleted list. You can also type / on an empty line and select/type bulleted list. Additionally, you can type * and a space on an empty line to autoformat to bullets, or use the keyboard shortcut CTRL/CMD + SHIFT + 8.

How do I disable reblogs on a post? — Click the settings icon in the top right, click the dropdown next to "Who can reblog?" and select "no one." (Please note that while it says those mentioned in a post can always reblog, I've found this to be broken. At the moment you should only disable reblogs if you don't want anyone reblogging it.)

Why does adding a gif to a post include the URL? — Inserting an image via link will automatically include that URL underneath the image in the final post (though it won't display in the editor). You can remove this by hovering over the image and clicking the chain link icon in the bottom left. Select the URL in the field there, delete it, and click Done.

How do I add alt text to an image? — Add your image, hover over it, click the three dots in the bottom right corner, and click "update image description."

Adding Elements

When you click on an empty line, options for things to add to your post will appear on the right, similar to legacy.

Read more

All of these work almost exactly as they have previously, except for adding an image. Clicking that will give you this, which resembles a standalone photo post of the old format.

You can then upload directly from your computer, or paste a URL, as before. If you insert an image via URL, that link will be visible just below the image in your final post, though it won't show up like that in the editor. It'll look like this.

If you don't want this, make sure to click the link icon at the bottom left of the image and delete the URL there.

Back to the image you added in the text editor! Hovering over the image will give these options.

The squares icon in the top left lets you click and drag the image, and you can drag images next to each other to stack them horizontally. The X in the top right will remove the image from your post. The link icon in the bottom left shows the image URL, and will only appear if you inserted the image via link. And the dots in the bottom right allow you to add alt text to your image -- click the dots, then click Update image description.

Formatting Text

Now! If you type up some text and then select it, formatting options will pop up. This is similar to legacy, but now there's a dropdown menu.

Here's what's in the dropdown.

Here's what they all look like in a post.

Regular is plain text. Bigger is the equivalent of the headline option on the legacy editor. Biggest is the equivalent of the main title, but you can have more than one in a single post now.

Quote turns text into a serif font and increases the font size. If you type up a long quote, the font size will shrink.

Chat switches to a more computer-looking font.

Lucille increases the font size and is a cursive font.

Indented is blockquote. It looks a tiny bit different on the dash now, with some more spacing on the top and bottom, but it's functionally the same.

Bulleted and numbered lists are self-explanatory. You can also start a bulleted list by starting an empty line of regular text with * and a space, and a numbered line by starting an empty line with 1 and a space. Additionally, the keyboard shortcuts CTRL/CMD + SHIFT + 7 for numbered list and CTRL/CMD + SHIFT + 8 for bulleted list still work.

You can also access these same options (and some others) by typing a slash onto the start of an empty line. A menu will pop up, allowing you to either click the one you want or simply type the one you want and hit enter.

If you want to quickly add a title, an indented blockquote, or anything like that, this is the fastest way to do it.

To the right of the drop down, these options are:

Strikethrough

Bold

Italics

Small

Link

Color

Most of these are self-explanatory. Keyboard shortcuts for bold and italics work as before. The old keyboard shortcut for small text no longer works, but CTRL/CMD + COMMA does.

Link works the same as it always has, and the keyboard shortcut of CTRL/CMD + K works as well. Additionally, if you have text selected and just paste in a URL, it will insert as a hyperlink from that selected text.

Color lets you change the color of your text to a few presets. Just click the paint bucket, and pick the color you want.

Post Settings

Back out to the main editor now, here's what under the settings icon in the top right.

Custom URL lets you set a custom URL for your post, if you want it to be something other than a string of numbers.

Content source is the source link and works similarly to how it did in legacy.

Post date is not the scheduler! That's under the post button dropdown and is fairly straightforward. But this option lets you backdate a post, setting the date to sometime earlier than you actually made. Gonna be completely honest, I haven't used this at all and don't entirely see the point, but if you want to play around with it, there it is.

Who can reblog? Is one of my favorite features. Opening that dropdown lets you disable reblogs on your post. The reblog button will be grayed out on the dash. (After you've made the post, you can edit to turn reblogs back on if you need to.)

While this does say that anyone mentioned can always reblog, I've found this to be broken in my testing -- I have submitted a ticket to staff, so hopefully they're working on it. It would be a godsend for roleplayers, since it would restrict reblogs to only the partner that you @-mentioned in your starter and keep randos from reblogging your threads.

Lastly, the text editor lets you switch to HTML or Markdown for your post, if you prefer one of those. They are similar to how they worked in legacy.

Community Labels

Along the bottom of the editor, you'll see the close button, the post button with the same dropdown as in legacy, and another dropdown that reads Everyone by default. Here's what that one looks like.

This is where you can manage your community labels, which is a fairly new feature from Tumblr. By default, your post will be marked as being for everyone. However, if your post contains any of the content listed, you should click to toggle that one on. This will hide your post from anyone who has that label switched off in their settings.

To check what you have on or off in your settings, look for this underneath your filtered tags:

Tags

Tags work the same as before. The only notable difference is that you can now edit inside tags without having to completely delete them. Just click on the text where you want your cursor to be.

You can rearrange tags with click and drag as before. Just be sure to click on the blue space around the text, rather than on the text itself.

Autosaving

The beta editor will automatically save your posts! It's autosaving whenever you see this pop up at the bottom of your screen, every minute or so.

If the editor gets closed unexpectedly, the last autosave of your post will go into your drafts. As someone who's lost many replies to unexpected tab closures, this is a godsend.

Just know that this only works if something external closes the editor. If you click the close button yourself, the post will disappear.

Miscellaneous Differences

You can now have more than one main title (Biggest) in your post.

You can no longer have multiple levels of bullet points.

You can no longer have paragraph breaks within your blockquote/indented text (though it's been that way for a while). To get a similar look in your blockquote, hold down shift and press enter twice (or use <br><br> in your HTML).

Previewing a post on your blog is still possible, but in a different location. Go to a post in your drafts, click the three dots in the top right, and click preview.

The editor will still remember your tags, but capitalization will be removed, which might be an aesthetic annoyance.

The editor will only suggest tags that start with your search. For example, if your ask memes tag is send me stuff ( ask memes ) — typing "send me stuff" in the tags box will suggest this tag for you, while typing "ask memes" will not.

When making or reblogging a post, your most recently used sideblog will be up by default; this is different from the legacy editor, which would always open your primary blog. Be mindful of things going onto the correct blogs!

More items may be added here as I spot them. Feel free to send any observations of your own if you have them.

Known Glitches

Because the beta editor is still known to be buggy, I thought I'd document the glitches I am aware of. I have reported these to staff using their feedback option and highly recommend that you politely do the same if these annoy you.

I've heard from several people that using CTRL/CMD + Z to undo caused their entire post to be erased. This has not personally happened to me, but I've heard it enough times that I feel I should share it here.

Using CTRL/CMD + A to select your entire post can be finicky. Clicking and dragging across the entire post is more reliable.

Typing with small text can be finicky and won't always apply correctly. I highly recommend applying the small text after everything is written, just to save some headache.

Generally, text formatting and paragraph blocks can behave oddly, especially when trying to select more than one. This is also a problem I've had with the legacy editor, but my experiences are not universal, so it may be a hindrance to you.

Customizing Beta/NPF Elements on your Theme

This is only for those of you who want to know how to change the way certain new beta elements look on their blog theme. If that's not you, you can stop reading here!

After a long day of work, I sat down at my computer. I was finally home and ready to get back to my project. Booting it up, I was greeted by the cute little fuzzy blue face of my virtual pet, Valen. It was happy to see me, just as I had coded it. I selected the menu option to send Valen to bed and got back to work on its code. For some reason, I didn't like the idea of it being awake as I worked on it--it felt like performing surgery on something that hadn't been given anesthesia. First I coded, then I made the assets needed. After everything was done, I looked it over one last time and saved my changes, waking Valen back up to see if it worked.

It played it's new waking up animation, then floated about the screen as normal. Perfect. Opening up my browser, I decided my next course of action was to go onto the forums and see what people had to say. The usual chatter about people's lives and hobbies, some talks of new games I had no interest in, a person discussing ttheir fan-revival of an old virtual pet site project... While I scrolled, I got a private message from someone I had never spoken to before.

I raised an eyebrow, but opened the message. It was clearly some sort of scam, with a message from a brand new account containing gratuitous spelling errors and a severely suspicious link at the end. I didn't want to let it linger in my inbox, so I moved to click the delete button--

And missed.

The attached link went purple as it redirected me to a site with a garbage URL. Panicking, I shut my computer down as fast as I could, but I could feel my heart sink. I knew I was too late. Sighing heavily, I resigned myself to the fate I had just sealed. Best-case scenario, my forum account had just been hijacked by another parasitic bot peddling it's bullshit. I booted the computer back up to check the damage.

Valen didn't greet me this time. I waited, looked around my computer, went into the menu to call it or wake it up or anything to get it's attention, but nothing. My anxiety began to rise. It was only some code and moving pictures, but Valen felt like any other real friend. But slowly, terribly, I came to the realization that my desktop was so much emptier than before. It would have been as empty even with Valen onscreen.

I dug through my photos, my notes, my downloads, everything--but to my horror, there was no trace of my program. There was no trace of any of my files, actually. It was completely wiped, save for a computer program simply titled "azuline" with the same icon that my virtual pet--no, my friend--Valen had. With nothing left to lose, I sorrowfully opened the program.

What greeted me was some... Creature in the same menu as I had made for Valen. It was bipedal, with a face resembling that of a bat or some other beast and the same colors as Valen. It sported little angel wings, heart-shaped blue pupils in the center of dark sclera, and clawed handpaws. The longer I looked at it, the more similarities to Valen it had. The tuft of hair between curved ears, fangs protruding from the mouth, the big bushy tail... How did this happen?

Before I could think on it any further, a textbox appeared at the top of the menu. It was dark blue, white-hued words typed in what looked like an italicized version of Courier font. It was almost the same color scheme as the infamous Blue Screen of Death.

"Hellooo~"

As the text appeared, the creature waved at me. What kind of sick joke was this?

"I can understand that you're likely confused, so I'll introduce myself. My name is Eros."

After that message had finished, the text box had a small tab underneath it with the thing's name. Eros.

"You're looking for your files, right? No worries. I've got them all right here. Do you want them back?~"

Without even thinking, I blurted out a yes as I read the question. Immediately the text onscreen vanished and a new message began to appear, almost like Eros had heard me.

"Just a moment..."

It closed it's eyes and my cursor changed to the loading wheel. I watched the games and files I had on my home screen before pop into place again as if they had never been gone to begin with. When everything was back where it should be, the loading continued for a bit before Eros opened it's eyes again and my cursor returned to normal.

"Done! Everything is as it should be. You can go look to make sure if you don't believe me. Now for the next order of business..."

It moved to be sitting down instead of standing.

"You're wondering where Valen went, aren't you? I can tell from your face alone."

Great. It had access to my camera.

"Easy enough answer. Valen is gone."

...What?

"Don't look so shocked. Suspicious links are bound to be bad news, aren't they? Besides, it's not quite in a literal sense. Valen is simply what I have been created from. Technically, it never left. Merely... Became different."

My throat went dry. ...It had to be a lie, right? Any moment now, Valen would return to the screen, happy as always.

"With this difference, though... Comes a price. You have a living virus to tend to now. Isn't that lovely?~"

No the FUCK it is not, I shouted! It is NOT lovely, and I hate this!

"Please calm down. I promise I don't need much from you. Just talk to me every once in a while, and I promise to stay in line. Do we have a deal?"

Enraged, I slammed the computer shut and didn't so much as look at it for months. I lost all that work, all that art... No, I had lost more than that. I had lost Valen. For what? Some sort of malware to start chatting with me as if it was just some average forum user?! ...Though it made sense for it to be so casual, it still made me mad.

A long while later, after I had long forgotten about Eros, I booted the computer back up and was greeted by it again.

"Welcome back. Ready to make that deal now?"

Absolutely not, I said back. Just seeing that thing pissed me off anew.

"No worries. I've had all the fun I wanted while you were away."

A window opened up next to the menu. It was my inbox, and it was flooded with outraged email from people I had exchanges with in the past. Every message had the same components: mentioning how I hadn't been talking to them in months, then suddenly I showed back up to send them some program that removed their files until they booted it up. I processed this information for a second before realizing what Eros had likely done. It had sent copies of itself to everyone I had ever emailed, pretended to be me, and infected their computers.

It wasn't just some obnoxious virus, it was a worm.

"Figure it out yet?"

I completely lost it. What the fuck is wrong with you?! Why are you doing this?

"I needed attention. Next time, turn your internet off before you abandon the computer, m'kay?~"

With a resigned sigh, I nodded. I knew I didn't have any sort of antivirus, so I couldn't get rid of it. I was stuck with Eros whether I liked it or not.

"Good!~ Oh, and you can close the menu now. I'll be wandering around your desktop."

I complied and closed the window, trying to think of a game to play. Not thinking of anything interesting, I just decided to emulate one of my Gameboy games for a bit: Pokémon Red. After a while of playing, my computer made a noise i hadn't heard before: the sort of noise a bell makes when you walk into a store. Minimizing my emulator, I went to see what made the sound only to find Eros staring at me again. Clicking it opened the menu again, revealing that not only did it now had an outfit on, but the outfit was made entirely of red-colored articles. I wasn't sure where it got the outfit from, so I assumed it was just something it made for itself.

"Good, you assumed correctly. So sorry to bother you, but you know how it is. ...You saved right?"

Why? Is my data in trouble or something from you existing?

"No, no, I would never! Honest!"

I gave Eros a glare. Sure, I said.

"I really do mean it. It's just a good idea to save."

I was speechless, but nodded in agreement before going to save. I was idly muttering to myself about how it actually cared about my progress when another textbox appeared from Eros.

"He."

Huh?

"You called me it. I'm not opposed to being an it, but I'd also like to be a he. ...Please."

Oh. Okay.

"Thank you!~"

After I saved, I decided to just close the game. I was still pretty mad at Eros for everything, but so far he wasn't really too horrible of company to me. ...Better than Valen, honestly.

Eventually, it had gotten dark, and I told Eros that I was going to sleep.

"Good night! Remember to boot the computer back up whenever you can."

I nodded, turned the internet off on my computer, and closed the menu. Eros disappeared with it, and I shut the computer.

Online video storage is not reliable. Sites may close down or go out of business. Here are the steps to backup your social media presence on your laptop.

My personal story isn't one with much depth. I was born in America I went to college as a worker, then found my first job online. However, it does include some devastating moments where I thought that my life was done. One of those moments was when my home computer stopped working... After a little tweaking, acquiring a new desktop and moving my hard drive from my old one into new one I was able restore all the work on that drive. It took me three days of sweating, literally crying... I've learned one thing. To automatically or manually backup my entire day's work with Dropbox and personal FTP servers to ensure that nothing can ever be deleted.

This is not the most ideal option. The more data you store in your online storage, the more you have to spend to keep it. It's simple to use and appears extremely secure. It's very easy to access and can be downloaded anywhere where there's internet. But what happens if internet is not available? I always keep my laptop close at hand in these situations. It serves as my last refuge from the most difficult situations. They are connected in a RAID stack so that they copy each other and make sure that a backup is available in the event that one of the HDDs fails. Since I copy a lot of my files there, it's not often that my laptop will work. I do not want two drives to go out on the same day.

It's a site I utilize to download videos from Youtube, Instagram, Facebook, and other places. I am interested in politics and underground movements. Therefore, I record many live events, save some for the future and then publish them on Youtube. When I'm done live, I backup it to my laptop. That's the way I work. download youtube video online It also allows me to cross-post videos to various platforms. This means I can not just share a YouTube video on Facebook but also upload that same video on Facebook. This is a different video. So, over the last eight years, I've got 3TB worth of live feeds. Periscope lives are not lost.. and this site is very helpful for me.

It's as if it's magic. You can play the video you want to download using Periscope, Youtube, or Facebook. Copy its URL using the share link. Then I visit the website for video downloads to copy the URL, then click the button. In just a few minutes, I am presented with a variety of options to download videos. Periscope cannot be supported by every site. But this one can.

If you weren't aware that you could make windows copy commands that allow you to join these fragments to create a standard 1 long video file. The format used for video fragments is called MpegTS, sometimes referred to as transport stream. The stream includes all information needed to decode each fragment. They are completely independent of each other, which allows each new user to stream effortlessly. It saves browser data, too. Instead of downloading a 1hr file it downloads 360 x 10 second files. If you are only watching for 25 seconds, your player only downloads 3-4 fragments. The current 25-second segment is divided into 3-4 segments. This means you can reduce the amount of data you need by downloading only 25 seconds of video stream.

The Wayback Machine and the Quest for Deleted Fics

What is the Wayback Machine?

The Wayback Machine is the time machine used by Peabody and Sherman in "Rocky and Bullwinkle." It's also the nickname of The Internet Archive (https://web.archive.org/) which, since the late '90s, has crawled the internet and just. Archived everything it finds. (You can read their history here). People now can enter pages they want to save (I used it to preserve some censored Chinese gay books, for example, entering all the URLs myself to be sure that Wayback captured them), and I don't even know how else it finds stuff, but it's pretty amazing. How amazing?

This is their capture of my Tripod anime webpage from when I was in college. Some of the graphics are missing, yeah, but like. I made this website in fricken 1999, and stopped maintaining it in 2001 or 2002. Back then my e-mail address was still "[email protected]" and webrings were a thing and I was well known for creating Winamp skins in Jasc. That it's there at all is pretty fucking incredible.

Who cares about your old anime page?

Other than me? No one. BUT. Wayback's "catch all, save all, store all" approach to archiving means it's an invaluable tool for finding deleted fic. For example, here's their capture of "Rock Salt and Feathers," which was (as far as I know) the first Destiel-specific fic archive made on the internet, and many of the earliest Destiel fics were posted there or x-posted there from LJ.

The owner deleted it in 2010, taking all the fics with it, but many can still be accessed - and saved by my project, and read by anyone who wants to - because they're in Wayback.

Okay, that's way more interesting. How do I use Wayback to find stuff like that?

The key to using the Wayback Machine to find old and/or deleted fics is that you need the original url. Thus, teaching someone how to use Wayback to find deleted fics ends up mostly being about teaching someone tricks for finding ancient urls for fics that have been deleted (and occasionally when you find the url you actually discover the fic isn't deleted at all, which is always nice!). Once you have the URL, the "how to use" part is easy, you just go to web.archive.org and enter the url in the search box.

The bar graph of years shows every time Wayback Machine "captured" (archived) the specific page at that url. Often, each of these captures will be different, especially for websites that update regularly (like an archive or an author's works page). When you click on a year, you'll get a calendar, and then you just pick the date and time you want (I highlighted April 18th, 2009, as an example, and because it was my dad's 68th birthday so why not? It's also about a month before I personally started watching SPN, ah, memories...). Once you've picked the capture you want, it'll load the next page and show you a capture of it - so here's a (different than above) capture of Rock Salt and Feathers, dating to within a week of when the website was first founded! The same bar graph is now up top, and you can click on the bar you want to jump to that date and see how the website changed over time - so this capture on April 18th, 2009, is pretty bare bones; by the time of the May capture I screen capped above, things have moved along!

Further, once you're in an archive of a deleted webpage you can (or at least, you can try) to navigate it as normal, just...all within Wayback's interface. So like, on this page, I can access their list of new works (and find different ones by trying the different captures)...

...and I can even read them!

Uh oh, better watch out for those 4.20 spoilers. Anyway, the point is - if you've got the original URL, you can use it to load a deleted page into Wayback, and then navigate that website as normal...at least up until you try a link that Wayback didn't archive, and then you'll hit a "sorry, we don't have that one" page (I'm not gonna screen cap cause at this rate I'll hit Tumblr's image limit in about 2 more minutes). Not everything will be there, ever. Rock Salt and Feathers is unusually well-preserved; when I did a deep-dive and spent three days trying to find things there, I was able to preserve nearly 90% of all the fic I know of that was posted there, and some of the rest I was able to find by tracking down alts for the people who posted there - many (though not all!) had x-posted their works to LJ, and later some ALSO x-posted to AO3, once AO3 existed (Rock Salt and Feathers predates the existence of AO3 by about 6 months).

So, as you can see - using Wayback is the easy part (at least until it isn't - more on that later...it's easy on a simple page like Rock Salt and Feathers, hence my using it for examples, but it can get hella complicated for more modern, dynamic websites like AO3). The hard part?

Where am I supposed to get the original URL for a fic that's been deleted for 5 years or a decade or more?

Google search is your friend (or your preferred search engine I guess, but I always use Google). If you know the username and the exact title, it's easy - especially using quotes, which is also your friend. So, for example, I couldn't remember the URL for Rock Salt and Feathers and I didn't actually have it saved, so I just googled "rocksalt and feathers" (in quotes). It prompt got mad at me and told me rock salt should be two words, and so I changed it, and sure enough the first result was an ancient LJ post that included the links I needed. Which is to say, what you're really looking for isn't the "thing itself," but rather other websites that reference the thing in question. For works that were originally posted on LJ, FF.net, personal websites like Rock Salt and Feathers, or elsewhere, ancient rec lists tend to be winners for finding the links. Learning some search tricks can also help - like, if you don't know the exact title, try variations, or try just the part you're sure of. If you remember a quote, try searching for that. If the title is something super common, try adding the author name or, if you don't know it, search for it using "(name of fic)" destiel. Anything you can think of, remember, etc., will help. Sometimes, you just get as close as you can, and then look through the results, and often there'll be something close that even if it's not right, will lead you to a resource that'll help.

Alternatively, again for older works, searching for a different work that you know was released around the same time. So, like, looking for a fic by...idk...Fossarian? Or cautionzombies? Try search for aesc, or bauble, or obstinatrix, or annundriel - someone else who was active when Fossarian and cautionzombies were. (Obviously knowing some Destiel fandom history helps in this case, but there are enough fandom olds around that even if you don't know this info, learning it is an ask away). Especially, try searching for a contemporary whose works are still up, because you can get titles for those more easily (for example, in this case, aesc, annundriel and obstinatrix all have some works cross posted on AO3, so finding the titles is easier, and then you just...keep going til you find what you want). You can also try looking for works where they were betas or editors or gift-recipients, and/or you can kinda...map out...their old friends groups, by seeing who commented where. For example, looking for links to cautionzombies stuff? cautionzomes and annundriel were friends, which I learned by poking around a fuck-ton, and annundriel's accounts are still up, and some old cautionzombie links can be found in annundriel's journals. The links don't work but that's not the point, you just need something to plug into Wayback!

And, as a side note - just because an old LJ link is dead, don't assume that the work is lost! Many of those authors x-posted onto AO3 once they had AO3 accounts (heck, Gedry was continuing to back up works to AO3 as recently as last year), and even among those who didn't (such as annundriel or CloudyJenn, who each only backed up a few) they often simply ported their accounts to Dreamwidth, so you can find their works just by reformatting their LJ url (username.livejournal.com) to a dreamwidth url (username.dreamwidth.org - works for me too, if you want to see the awful shit I wrote in 2005). Also, sometimes you'll find they x-posted to FF.net but not AO3 (which, granted, presents FF.net own array of challenges for backing up, but that's for a different post - drop me an ask if you want me to write that up sooner rather than later, otherwise I'll just do it whenever I remember). All of which is to say - before you assume a dead link means a deleted work you can save yourself some trouble (and some heartbreak, Wayback isn't great for LJ in general because of how LJ posts and blogs were structured) it's worth your while to take a little extra time and check - okay, was it x-posted? Did the person have alternate usernames they used on different platforms? Did they have a writing community on LJ where they posted (for example, a lot of authors posted their works directly to deancasbigbang.livejournal.com or deancas-xmas.livejournal.com, and also a lot of authors made communities even just for themselves, and those communities remained even when they deleted their personal accounts). Even if you find they deleted across all platforms, it's easier to find full works from AO3 or FF.net on Wayback than it is to find works from LJ, so it's worth a try. And, honestly, with really old stuff? Finding the old work x-posted somewhere, or just asking someone like me, or the folks at @destielfanfic, is more likely to find it for you than putting an LJ url into Wayback, though in a pinch that of course is an option too.

Unforth, stop babbling about LJ, I care about deathbanjo, or apokteino, or TamrynEradni, or...

...or anyone who posted on AO3 exclusively, and deleted more recently, yeah, I get it. Of course, the tricks for finding the urls remain similar - rec lists are your friends! But, for AO3, there's another super handy trick. It doesn't always work, but it's by far the best place to start.

Go to @ao3feed-destiel.

Search for the author's name, and/or the fic title, and/or anything you can remember about the fic.

Since mid-2013, the Destiel AO3 feed Tumblr has logged probably around 75% of all the Destiel that's been posted. There ARE gaps - works that weren't initially tagged Destiel, or times when the feed was down and just caught nothing, or "oops the author changed their name four times and I don't know which one they were using when they posted That Fic," or "there are three people with very similar usernames" or "the fic is called 'carry on' and there are a bajillion fics with the same title." It's not perfect, but as a first step it's essential. Because, whatever you find, it'll have:

The link to the original AO3 post

The link to the author's name page at the time

The exact date and time it was originally posted

The original title, tags, etc.

If the work was in a series, the series link

And all of the links can be put into Wayback to help you find The Thing You Want. So, to use a recent example from someone I know doesn't mind having their stuff distributed (or, in this case, discovered on Wayback)...

When you click on the tinyurl, you get an AO3 error page, but, more importantly, in the enter-the-url bar, you get the original url for the fic! Which, in this case is:

And then you can go over to Wayback, and...

Well, lookie there, it's the fic that HazelDomain locked! (Note that you'll get a "do you agree to the terms of use" and potentially other pop-ups. Just say yes and click through, there's no way to avoid them because there's no way to access these pages in Wayback as if you are "logged in as you," so the notifications and, in the case of Mature and Explicit works, the "you must be 18+ to proceed..." warnings will pop up every single time (and the 18+ one will cause you depressing issues, which in general just make Mature and Explicit deleted works MUCH harder to find, more on that later, yes this post is really gonna be that long, sorry...)

Now, suppose you weren't looking for this fic by HazelDomain, but instead were looking for one that ao3feed-Destiel didn't have on their list. Well, now is when that link to HazelDomain username comes in handy!

You can put this directly into Wayback, and it'll show HazelDomain's home page or, alternatively, if you loaded the fic above (for example) you can just click where it says HazelDomain below the title, and you'll get to go to their main page, which'll list their most recent works (on the date that the capture was taken) and some other links. Tada! You've found HazelDomain fics on Wayback.

(Side note on all of this: AO3 links are stable and permanent, which means that they do not change even if the nature of a fic changes. If the fic's posting date is edited? If the author changes their username? If the title changes? If it's added or removed from a series or a collection? If it's orphaned or added to an anonymous collection? The link will never change. That's how I know that the so-called "orphaned" version of With Understanding is actually a fake - it doesn't have the same URL as the actual version of With Understanding that apokteino posted. So, if you find a link to a work and it turns out that work has only been orphaned, not deleted, that link will still work! For example...

Okay, but the one I want isn't on the author's page even after I checked!

As I mentioned, a basic old site like Rock Salt and Feathers? Very easy to use on Wayback. A complex website like AO3? Much more messy, which means there are a bunch of tricks you can use to try to "get at" the data. There's always the chance it's not there at all; a random ficlet by a little known author? Unlikely to have made it into Wayback, unfortunately, especially if the ficlet was Mature or Explicit rated. But, there are bunch of things you can try, and there's never any guessing which will work until you try. When I'm looking for something that's been deleted? I try them all.

Trick 1: The "/pseud" trick.

See how in HazelDomain's author link, it's listed as "users/HazelDomain/pseuds/HazelDomain"? There's a few tricks you can use related to this. First, on AO3, both "users/(username)" and "users/(username)/pseud/(username)" function as links (even if the second instance of username isn't actually a pseud and is just a repeat of the same username, as in the HazelDomain example). As such, they are different urls for Wayback machine searching purposes. Sometimes, when you search "user/(username)" you'll get results but get none when you search for "users/(username)/pseuds/(username), and vice verse. To Wayback, these are two completely different urls, so you have to check them individually - AO3 knows internally that these links route to the same place but Wayback is just basically taking screen caps (well, HTML text caps) so it doesn't know they're equal - so check both!

Trick 2: The "they changed usernames" trick.

If you know that an author changed usernames, try plugging every single one into those "user/(username)" and "user/(username)/pseud/(username)" links. Is it a lot of work? Yes. How bad did you want that fic, again?

(side note: having trouble figuring out if they had alternate usernames? Yeah, it's a nightmare. Checking old rec lists is one way to find out. If the work is in a series, there's also a trick - even if the person changes username, the "Series created by: (username)" thing at the top will still show the username they had when they created the series. Or, if they had a fic with a really unusual title, try doing a google search for that title specifically, even if it's not the one you're looking for, because the odds that two people used that crazy-specific title are low, and you'll be able to see results that might give the different name. Or-or, as yet another option...my master spreadsheet lists every alternate name for a given user that I know of...for example, deathbanjo has also been loneprairies, beenghosting, and tumbleweeds. Also note - unlike WORK links, which are stable even if the person changes their username, orphans, etc., "user/(username)" links are NOT stable. If you search for, idk, bellacatbee...

Trick 3: The "/works" trick.

Hope you're not done giving those "users/(username)" and "users/(username)/pseuds/(username)" links a work out, because you're not done yet! Those links will just give you their home page, which will only list their 6 (...I think it's 6???) most recent works. And then you click on "works" at the side and...oh no there's nothing there! Whelp, whichever link Wayback tried to use ("users/(username)/works" or "users/(username)/pseuds/(username)/works") ...try the other! And then try it for all their username changes, if they had any! Getting frustrated yet? If you're lucky you'll have Found The Thing and you can stop, but if you haven't, we're not done yet, cause yes, there's more...

Trick 4: The "?fandom_id=27" trick.

So, I'm writing this guide specifically for Destiel, so this trick is being shared in the SPN-specific format. Every single fandom on AO3 has a fandom ID number. Supernatural's is 27. If you're looking for a different fandom, you'll just have to find it's number - you can do this by going to any author you know wrote for that fandom, going to their home/main page (users/(username) or users/(username)/pseuds/(username)) and clicking on the fandom - the results will show the fandom_id in the link. So, like, I've still got fairychangeling's page open, Thor is fandom_id 245368, MCU is 414093, Good Omens is 114591, etc. Again, these IDs are stable - fandom_id=27 will ALWAYS be Supernatural, no matter who the writer is. AND, since Wayback treats every single one of these urls as unique, even if "users/(username)/works"/"users/(username)/pseuds/(username)/works" don't work, "users/(username)/works?fandom_id=27" or "users/(username)/pseuds/(username)/works?fandom_id=27" might. And you know what comes next - yes, it's try every variation again!

Trick 5: check every capture!

Captures on Wayback are a moment in time, which means there's always a chance that each one will be different. Trying to find a work that a user wrote in 2011, but Wayback /works is only showing works from 2021 on the first page, and going to page 2 produces a dead link? Try going to the oldest capture. Try going through every single capture, until you find the title you want, if you find the title you want. The /works page wasn't captured at all? Go through every old version of their main page, and see if there's any version of it where the story you want was in the 6 most recent works they posted. Etc. Try every capture on every variation of the /users/(username) links. Test and test and test until you either find it or you've exhausted your options.

Finding lost fics is about patience and about exhausting every option before you give up. All these small variations that look like nothing? Are another chance that Wayback may have captured the work. Skipping one isn't gonna do you any favors. There's never a guarantee. Lots is simply not there. But - more is there then you'll think if you just try one link then give up.

But I'm not looking for a list of their works, I'm looking for a specific work!

The above tricks are what I use when, for example, I've just heard a person deleted their account, and I'm trying to build as complete a list as possible of the works that have been deleted. Further, even if Wayback hasn't captured the actual work, the /(username) page and the /works page will have the links. Sometimes, those links will help you discover the work was orphaned or moved to anon instead of actually deleted. Other times, you'll click it, and bam, the fic will be right there in Wayback! Still other times, it won't be...or at least not apparently. But, sure enough, there are tricks around that too. Before you give up and assume a fic isn't in Wayback at all, you can try...

Trick 1: Remove the chapter part of the link

So, you've got the link to your fic - lets use, idk, "Carry On" by TamrynEradani (I haven't actually tested this as an example yet, hopefully it works lmao for everything I need to do here... lmao).

The original link to Carry On (found on ao3feed-destiel):

AO3 assigns every work a unique number AND every chapter a unique number. If you put in a work without the "/chapters/####" part in AO3, it auto-routes you to chapter 1 and fills in the chapter number. But, not to beat this dead horse again - Wayback doesn't know how to do that! It's entirely literally. It captures only the link, exactly as the link was fed to it. Thus, if you put that link into Wayback? It gets no results. BUT, if you remove the "/chapters/1458361" part (it actually DID loop me to the chapter ID, but when I put it in WITH the Chapter ID, it found nothing - welcome to the joys and vagaries of searching for deleted fics in Wayback...)?

There's Carry On...at least sort of! Because yes, there's still a problem - that pesky "Proceed" button. Because you can't log into Wayback as if it were AO3, and Wayback is (again) literal, you can often end up in annoying cycle where (with Mature and Explicit works) you just get looped back to the "Proceed" page over and over again. There are a couple ways you can try to bypass this.

Trick 2: Check past captures!

Are we learning yet? Yep, this is a repeat. Often, going through every capture will find one or more where, for whatever reason, the Proceed page just...isn't in the way. I have no idea why that's the case, but it works - it's how I opened that HazelDomain fic above, for example. And, it works for Carry On, too - when I tried a different capture of the exact same URL?

There it is!

However, even if that doesn't work, you still have recourse.

Trick 3: the "?view_adult_work=true" trick.

When you hit that "Proceed" button, AO3 auto-adds on "?view_adult_work=true" but (hits the horse with a stick again) Wayback doesn't know that necessarily, unless you tell it. So, you can sometimes bypass the endless-loop-of-proceed problem by giving it the direct link instead. In this case...

(this trick actually DOESN'T work with Carry On, but it DOES work sometimes, especially with one shot mature/explicit works. That said, the "check every capture" trick works more often, so definitely try that first).

Okay, so...getting somewhere, but! Carry On is 34 chapters, and this one I've found in Wayback (it's here by the way - Wayback links? Also stable. https://web.archive.org/web/20131126180609/http://archiveofourown.org/works/775352/chapters/1458361) is showing just the first chapter. And when I try to go to Chapter 2? It gets caught up in that goddamn "Proceed for 18+" thing again, and there are only two captures now, and WHAT DO?"

Trick 4: The "?view_full_work=true" trick

There are two ways to implement this trick. One is easy - when you're on the page in Wayback, you see that "Entire Work" button over the tags box? YA JUST CLICK IT! It's like magic! At least, it's magic when it works. (It does, in this case - if you want to read all of Carry On and don't want to track it down? https://web.archive.org/web/20130911072416/http://archiveofourown.org/works/775352?view_full_work=true tada!)

And see the difference there? it's the same link, just with ?view_full_work=true added to the end! So, if you've found yourself in a position where you can't get by the "Proceed" loop, OR where you try to go to Chapter 1, try every link variation, and get nothing? You can always still try:

Because there's always a chance that Wayback captured that even if it didn't capture the other variations.

Unforth...I've read all this...I've tried everything...I still couldn't find the thing! What can I dooooooo....

At this point? You've mostly exhausted what you can try in Wayback. But! Wayback actually isn't the only way to find a lost fic, it's just the most obvious and most easily used by the public. There are a few others!

1. I already tagged @/destielfanfic, so I won't again, but they're a great resource for finding deleted fics that authors have said "yes you may distribute," and they've also got a list of authors who've indicated "no." I used their lists as the base for mine (and their head mod and I trade notes, and fics, semi-regularly and have for years). So, I mentioned Fossarian above? Well, you can find Fossarian fics for download by going to destielfanfic, searching for author Fossarian, and going through the links - for example, "All the Hours Wound" is available in ePub format right here!

2. If you're willing to delve into Livejournal, spnstoryfinders (https://spnstoryfinders.livejournal.com/) is a still-active community that helps find all sorts of missing SPN stories (not just Destiel) and often posts will have links for x-posts, help with finding alts/different names people have used, or have people volunteering to distribute if contacted. Honestly, personally, I'm too shy to actually contact those people, and even if you're braver than I if they haven't posted since 2015 it's anyone's guess if you'll still be able to reach them, but it's always worth a try!

3. Me. Ask me. Even if it's not on my list. Drop me a note. I know tricks, as you can see, and I'm just really experienced at this point. I've been doing this for years. And, even if I did list most of the tricks I know above, I probably forgot something, and I also have the time (...well, sometimes I do, like when I'm not spending 2.5 hrs writing blog posts about how to use Wayback lmao), and I might know pseuds for a person you don't, and I have contacts who have collections, and, and, and...

4. Speaking of collections, the Profound Bond Discord mods graciously gave my archive a chat room (it's #fic-archive-project in the collections section of the server). AND, people who are on that server who have large private fic collections can opt to give themselves the @/archivist role, and when things get deleted or when we look for things, even if I can't find it, I can tag the other archivists and see if anyone else has it. When I exhaust MY options? That's where I go. So. You can too, you don't need me to mediate that, just join the Discord.

5. There's a smaller, Wayback-esque archive webpage called http://archive.is/. It has way less in it, but I've occasionally had luck on there finding LJ stuff that Wayback didn't have.

6. As a last ditch, you can always try Google. For example, if I google: tamryneradani "carry on" destiel download - the only damn result (I made this search up off the top of my head without testing it so I'm glad it worked lmao) is shiphitsthefans's master post of TamrynEradani fic which includes download links, because Tamryn made it clear from the moment they deleted that they didn't mind distribution (I was here then, which is how I know that...). So, like, literally, you want to read Carry On, yes I linked it above on Wayback but you can also just download the e-book from this post. There are all kinds of things in all kinds of pokey places on the internet. There's a small old archive that got permission from LJ authors to PDF their works and posted about it, with links, on Tumblr, and now a lot of those originals are deleted (I don't have the link sorry, I didn't bother to save it after I downloaded everything they had) but the Tumblr posts are still up and the DL links that still work. There's master posts for fics that have been deleted but the master post still has a functional link to a full PDF. Stuff is everywhere and you don't know unless you check.

There's so, so, so much Destiel, and so much as been deleted over the years. When you look, sometimes you'll strike gold right away by just plugging the link into Wayback and YAY THERE'S THE THING, and sometimes you'll spend an hour looking and think you finally finally have it and get so close and that last PDF link on the last place you had to check after everything else didn't pan out will be broken and you'll kind of want to burn down the internet, but...you'll know you tried.

This is how I built this archive - that, and downloading as much as possible before it was deleted, so that once it was gone, I didn't have to find it, cause I already had it. Basically every fic marked as "deleted and looking for copy" on my list? I tried all of this and still couldn't find it. Not always - sometimes I just don't have time - but. When I have the time, I check, and I even occasionally check again, just in case I missed something the first time. This is how it goes. You try, and you hope, and sometimes you'll succeed, and sometimes you won't. It's hard, but if you want the fic bad enough...you do the thing.

So. This is my general tutorial on how to use Wayback. What you do with that information is up to you. Don't ask me for help finding links for things I've said I won't distribute, but if you're willing to do the leg work and try the above strategies...well, authors can't do much about Wayback, they lost that level of control the instant they posted their works, and it's there to be accessed by anyone who knows how (if it's there at all, anyway, which, well, sometimes it is, sometimes it isn't).

Now you know.

Go forth and get the fic.

a farewell and a hello.

So this is probably not a surprise in the wake of my hiatus, but I am relinquishing rivkahstudies to an archive and moving accounts to the url @inicipitinterpreter. 

What does this mean? Are you leaving studyblr?

Yes, and also no. For those who know me well or have followed my journey closely, I began this studyblr in junior year of high school. I was using it to prepare for the transition from International Baccalaureate to university. As my interest in language flourished, so did the diversity of my content.

However, with the following I accumulated (I still can’t believe there’s nearly seven thousand of you) this blog could not grow at the rate that I was. @incipitinterpreter is a space for the individual I am growing into, rather than the young, people-pleasing student I was before. Moreover, I felt deeply embittered and jaded by the things I witnessed and endured (and am still enduring) in the COVID-19 pandemic, from broken institutions to inaccessible education systems. I hated romanticizing “the grind” for young, impressionable students like I once was, especially minors. 

You all may have seen some of the advocating I have done for honest/imperfect studyblr pictures and accounts, as well as critiquing the limits and inequities of our current education systems. Unfortunately, my old aesthetic posts still circulate, the ones that stressed me out until I got the Perfect Angle, and I would like to lay them to rest, or at least no longer be notified of them.

All of these factors culminated in true dread every time I open this blog. To truly depart from these old performances, I need to retire rivkahstudies and go through a study and work journey that is more authentic to my principles.

What does this mean for your content, and this blog?

@incipitinterpreter will be a langblr/lingblr/workblr. I am in my final year of undergraduate studies, so my focuses will be:

gaining higher proficiency in my languages for the purpose of interpretation certification,

providing/reblogging resources to that end as well as general anthropology and linguistics content,

applying for jobs and reblogging resources for professional life,

sharing my realistic experience with both study and work, appreciating the small things in life that I can romanticize without glamorizing “the grind” or pretending my journey is flawless. 

rivkahstudies will not be deactivated, at least not yet. I will be using it as a personal archive, especially to find resources I saved (and boy did I save a lot). You may see some more personal content get purged gradually over time. Asks may or may not be answered or screenshotted for @incipitinterpreter.

What will happen to your servers, Study Solidarity and the Language Accountability Project?

Study Solidarity is still active, albeit a bit dead due to most classes not being in session.

I still intend for LAP to be rebooted, but I will be modding by myself or with one other person, so this will likely turn into a small, tightly-knit community rather than a large resource hub. Further information/applications/etc will be on @incipitinterpreter in the future. 

In conclusion

One of my favorite things to remind myself is that one of the only constants in life is change. I am deeply grateful for the welcoming community I’ve been a part of for four years! I am so proud of my accomplishments and how rivkahstudies has grown in both following and content. But this blog has a lot of history behind it too, and I don’t want to write over it or delete it hurriedly without first going through for my own purposes. I think having a conversation with one’s past selves is important and healing.

Long Overdue

Note: This blog used to be pansdailyobsessions and has now had a name and url change (now, pan-magi). Post will include reasons for change.

Wow, wow, wow. It’s been just over four years since I posted here. I was planning to log into tumblr for the finality for a while and hadn’t really grasped how long it had been. My last post was supposed to be an update post… yeesh. I didn’t expect any activity but was surprised to see notes from the last few months. Whether or not people found my posts from reblogs or this blog itself, thank you. I’m not sure how many followers would still care, either from leaving tumblr behind or from moving past Magi content, yet I feel like I need to give some head’s up to anyone who wants it.

My original plan was to log into my tumblr account and delete everything (this includes this blog and my others). I’m not too worried about my others, since I never had too much there. My primary blog was mainly for reblogging, including from friends who have largely moved on from the platform. It's now essentially private so I can keep this one as is w/o much hassle. I hadn’t done anything on tumblr for years, and I wanted to move on and officially clear the URLs. It would be simple. When I finally gotten around to logging in, it was partly because I had fallen down the Magi rabbit hole again and I wanted to see some of my old stuff. I then saw the old notes and I couldn’t do it. I couldn’t simply clear everything.

Gut instinct beforehand said it would be okay. A lot of people had reblogged posts that will continue to see love, and someone who wants to find my posts can see it on a reblog for a tumblr that still exists. I have all my content saved on my computer if I want to see it again myself. I can’t do it.

However, this isn’t me coming back to be fully active on this blog. I have gifsets I’ll hopefully be able to do by the end of the year, but after that this will largely be an inactive blog. I will have a fuller explanation under the read more; I dislike large text blogs clogging dashboards and my homepage, so I’ll keep the general gist of it here.

New Name/URL: Why, if this will mainly be an archived blog in the future, did I bother with the name change? I started this blog with the idea that every few months or several months my interest will change and from that point on have a different singular focus. That never happened, and throughout this blog’s lifespan I stuck to Magi. I think pan-magi fits better now that I am sure it will stay a blog about Magi. All my tags for my posts have also been updated. I was never really happy with the word obsessions in the title either. It didn’t gel with me back when I made it but I couldn’t think of anything else. Plus, I don’t know if that word dinged with any spam p*rn bots that randomly followed me after I became inactive. I got a number of honest new follows in the years absent, but over half of them were spam accounts and only with this blog. I’m unclear if it’s because this was my most active or if it was the name (more on this below).

Archived, w/ Few New Posts: I will keep this blog here without deleting it for the distant future. However, I do not plan to be super active on this blog. There is a list of gifset ideas that I had way back then, and I want to complete them. After that, my ideas have run low for graphics and gifs and likely won’t post anymore. I hope they will be done soon but I can’t give a timeline. Reason: I got a new desktop that runs things a hundred times better, yet several of my programs were purchased for one computer only, including Photoshop. I no longer have it. I know there are cheaper programs, but I am an old dog and creature of habit, and Photoshop is the easiest for me to use. I’m saving money for it over the holidays though don’t know if I will be able to purchase it by then. Fingers crossed I can wrap up my gif content by the new year. I can’t promise it though.

I will still accept asks; requests are closed. Messages will be open but I won’t log in that frequently.

Fanart & Other Content (?): I may not have ideas for gifs but I have a number of fanart ideas. Not sure why or how my brain works, but that is how it is. I may post them here, but I’ve never been a fan of posting art on tumblr. While they haven’t been my most popular posts, that hasn’t bothered me (my sketches here have only been okay). I post whatever I enjoy and think of. However, tumblr has restrictions on canvas and file size that will hamper and compress what I post. Especially for short comics I want to work on and larger images it will prove to be problematic. As of now, I am unsure where I want to move to. Instagram has similar restrictions on size and ratio of images that work best on it. I stay away from Twitter for my mental health. DeviantArt remains the largest art centric platform I know, though I don’t know how viable or active it is these days. Wherever and if I ever want to publish my art, or other Magi fan content, I will make a separate blog with the information.

This tumblr blog will remain up no matter what, and all my gifs and graphic sets will be posted here. Tumblr, I believe, is the best for gifs and graphic content. Other types of content though… eh.

Tumblr in general: There is another reason why I want to predominately move on from tumblr, and why I originally wanted to delete everything. That being, tumblr is weird. On this blog, I had an older post flagged as adult. I assume it was the Sinbad gif in that gifset (the one where he meets Aladdin and Morgiana). I can understand that. But that gifset is a repost and collection of the original posts I made for the first season. The original post has remained untouched. I’m left confused. I probably will end up deleting the original too. I don’t want to leave this blog archived in the future and worry about one post that shows a rogue butt.

Tumblr has given me the most concern for security as well. There was one instance years ago of receiving an email about something problematic on my primary blog that I was left in the dark with. It was predominately a fandom reblog source, and I wasn’t given much information besides a warning about potentially posting/reblogging a political spam post. I reblogged a post talking about historical significance of WWI in Wonder Woman but I’m still unsure if that was the post that it was talking about. Maybe one of my Hunger Games posts? I don’t know. Maybe it was a mass email going out to everybody. Who knows, it was years ago but it did give me worry about reblogging ordinary fandom gifsets from then on. Back to this blog, I mentioned getting a lot of spam blogs randomly following me after I went inactive. It made me uncomfortable not knowing if they would try to contact me or post my content on adult-oriented sites without my knowledge. They never did and going through my follower list, it seems like they were deleted and cleared out and people following me are real people and not spam p*rn bots. That left me uneasy and I didn’t want to login for a long time.

I will be updating broken links (either because of my url change or external links that have gone inactive in some of my (x) insp posts) in the next couple days. I want to get back to gifsets here and wish it could be soon. After that, this blog will remain here with no more new content but for ease of browsing access. Ok, but Alastor being an old man that doesn’t know technology being boyfriend’s with a Victorian man that taught himself how to craft lasers and code *his own damn ship computer/pocket watch phone* is so damn hilarious. Pentious tries to teach him how to use a mobile phone and he either locks himself out of the damn thing or he presses too hard on the screen and ends up skewering the damn thing with his talons.

HONESTLY. HONESTLY in the sequel to CDIH I plan on doing so much with the fact that Sir Pent is keeping up and Alastor ain’t.

Like. Like just picture. Alastor gets dragged kicking and screaming into using ~modern technology~. Once he has been dragged into using ~modern technology~, by golly, he’s going to use it to have some fun! He’s going to decide he wants to watch music videos on YouTube, which is a web site that he has heard exists. He is going to go to the URL bar. He’s going to type in “http:\\www.google.com”, he’s going to look at it thoughtfully, he’s going to squint at the two different slash keys on the keyboard, he’s going to leave the room to ask somebody which direction the slash is supposed to tilt if you are trying to go to Google Dot Com—

“you’re sure that’s the direction the slash mark is supposed to tilt SPECIFICALLY to go to GOOGLE DOT COM?” “yes, I know what I’m doing,” “no, you don’t need to come help me,” “no, I am PERFECTLY capable of going to Google Dot Com without you holding my hand, I was the king of the airwaves back before most Americans HAD radios, if I could handle the radio I can CERTAINLY handle an overpromoted typewriter, THANK you”

—and then he’s going to go back to the computer and delete the entire URL by clicking “delete” 21 separate times, he’s going to retype it as “http://www.google.com”, and then he is going to click enter.

(And please… if this is how slow and difficult it is for him to navigate to google, imagine how much time and effort someone must have spent to slowly teach him how to turn on a computer, how to open a web browser, what a web browser is for, how to highlight the address bar in order to type in a URL, what an address bar IS…)

And then he is going to click in the search bar on Google Dot Com, and he is going to type in “Hello! How do I reach You Tube?” and he is going to puzzle over the little square that says “I’m Feeling Lucky” for a moment before deciding, no, perhaps he doesn’t feel lucky today, and he’ll click on the little square that says “Google Search,” and google is going to be like,

An actual link to YouTube does not appear anywhere on the first page of results. Alastor is lost. He’s adrift at sea with no sign of shore. He will never find his way to YouTube.

He looks at the little list of tabs up top like,

and he dubiously clicks on Videos, because yes, the You-Tube he has been shown had videos, that’s kind of its thing. And the results are like,

And he very dubiously clicks on the first one.

First it plays an ad—oh, he succeeded, he found a video!—and then it plays another ad, Alastor has no ad block, the concept of “ad block” does not exist anywhere within his understanding of the universe, and then it starts playing what looks like an old black and white movie like,

Oh it’s a picture show! He found a picture show on the Internet! How wonderful! He doesn’t recognize the movie but it’s in black and white, it must have been made in his time—

And then a minute and twenty seconds into the video it FINALLY starts playing music and he’s like I DID IT I FOUND THE MUSIC VIDEOS I WAS PROMISED. He pats himself on the back, he’s great at using modern technology, he’s got this all figured out.

He’s got a little yellow pad and pencil he keeps next to the computer to jot down the “Internet addresses” of songs he likes so that he can type them into the “Internet address bar” when he wants to watch them or listen to them again later. He’s found that you have to write them down fast, even though they’re very long, because when the song ends it will move right on to the next one—just like the radio when a song ends—so if you dawdle it will vanish and you’ll never find the song again!

Guess what feature Alastor hasn’t noticed exists and doesn’t know he can turn off.

Guess what other features Alastor doesn’t know about.

If Alastor likes a song and wants to hear it twice, he clicks on the search bar and types in the whole URL one letter at a time and clicks enter to get it to re-load and play again.

And he’s got no control over this mad unhinged machine that is the YouTube algorithm system, its autoplay is like a car with a brick held down on the gas and nobody holding the steering wheel, it’s just taking Alastor wherever the fuck it wants and if it starts ducking into weird fucking videos Alastor is just going to assume that that’s how YouTube works, it’s no different from the radio, sometimes you’re scheduled for music and sometimes you’re scheduled for ads and sometimes you’re scheduled for interviews or a talk show or news or whatever.

Which means eventually if he lets this untamed shambling A.I. behemoth keep careening around wherever it wants to go, it’s going to start meandering into the niche/weird stuff. EVENTUALLY it’s going to stumble onto something off of Sir Pentious’s channel, and he’s going to open up the video sounding like a Boomer trying to sound cool, like,

Video opens up on Sir Pent like that and Alastor is absolutely flabbergasted that Sir Pentious is on the You Tube and then Sir Pent’s like “so I broke into another church to take a joy ride on their pipe organ, per my last video this is the song all four of my followers requested for me to play!” and he takes off like,

and Sir Pent’s trying to sound cool, ends like “Sssmasssh those like and subscribe buttons if you’d like to sssee me illegally play someone else’s pipe organ! :>” and Alastor is sitting there going I HAVE NEVER WANTED TO SMASH ANYTHING SO MUCH IN MY LIFE BUT I HAVE NO IDEA HOW TO DO THAT.

He’s so completely shocked and awed to see a video with Sir Pentious in it that he doesn’t even remember to write down the URL, which means he will never ever find the video again.

So: Sir Pent is extremely embarrassingly trying to sound Hip & Modern while playing a 22-year-old out-of-date meme song and he’s only got four followers… but like, but like, he KNOWS the Hip & Modern lingo; AND he knows how to make, edit, and upload YouTube videos and curate a YouTube channel; and he knows how to read the comments on his videos, at least minimally engage with viewers, and keep up with who’s following him…

And meanwhile Alastor doesn’t even know the comment section exists.

Sir Pentious only looks behind the times and out of date until he is compared with the alternative.

Could it be that I'm just tired and want to have fun without being an asshole? That, despite everything, I'd gladly give my creative talents for the sake of being recognized positively? It's been a year. Please just leave me be.

Y’know it’s really funny how @technical-trolls managed to find a post with no reblogs that doesn’t mention your (or any past urls) of yours! Given that I blocked @technical-trolls made the post, and didn’t reblog the post I was referencing. In order for @technical-trolls to have seen it, either someone who knows what you’ve done had to have linked it (unlikely, given the content) or @technical-trolls saw the new blocks and decided to dig through my blog. Which seems really nosey for someone who Just Wants To Be Left Alone. It’s really surprising that that’s what’s considered bringing Old Shit Up though, instead of, I dunno, bringing up old receipts of you pretending to have drama with yourself so you could suck up to a BNF who blocked you, only to turn around and out yourself as a fraud to someone else. 

Or that time you blamed artists for being poor b/c they blocked you, despite the fact that they did not, in fact, block you in a way that would prevent you from commissioning them? 

How about that time you went into some kids’ discord to harass them over their gender and not being “a good trans,” only to turn around make a misgendering CALLOUT POST for them? 

This is just SOME of the stuff I have ON HAND. If we wanted to look into other actions of yours, we could move on from hard evidence to the the Clock-Work-Testimonials! 

What do you think is going to happen when I bring up even “older wounds” like the fact you tried to make someone die? I don’t have receipts for now, sure, but I get the feeling that if I talked to “peons of the siren-legion,” they’d have something. Maybe not as much as an in-depth account of the emotional abuse you put an artist whose art you continue to use despite not paying a penny for it, but something. 

Anyways! Point is, I was leaving you be before, by airing my grievances in a vent that I intended to delete, with no identifiable information (save for what you did and the fact that, again, you still use art from someone you harassed into giving it to you for free.) If you want to get up in MY business and say I’M the one opening up YOUR woulds, I’ll show you how far I can dig, and what I can find.

The only thing I won’t be able to find a receipt for is an apology from you, because for all this talk of wanting to move on, it’s the one thing you refuse to do. You don’t apologize. You never actually make any efforts to become a better person, nor do you make any efforts to ensure people can move on. All you do is say “Well maybe I want to be a better person and move on so YOU should forget what I did!” and get mad when nobody does. You talk about being willing to give up Your Creative Talents for a good reputation, but you can’t even seem to give up this fandom for it.

𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐥𝐞 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 ( you can totally skip that part and jump right to the end where i tell what i’m gonna do now, but i felt like giving an explanation for it first ) : 

     i’ve first started writing imra sometime around december 2017  shortly after her second appearance on supergirl ― where i got to know her. at that time, i wasn’t a big fan of comics so my only exposure to her has been through the show. and, although i hate to admit it, i kinda only picked her as my muse because the muse i initially wanted to write ( kara ) was already around so much ― and i didn’t feel like competing ( let it be known that i was still pretty new to rping back then and i was afraid of not finding people to write with if i wrote someone so many awesome and talented people already wrote ) with anyone else. so i picked imra instead. she’d only been around for a few scenes and she seemed nice enough and in a way she seemed similar to kara. i still didn’t know much about the comics then and while i did do a little research, i decided to go my own way with her; making her my own character because canon sure as hell wasn’t going to properly develop her. after all, i think we can all agree that they only put her in the show for some drama and the famous cw love triangle.

    all was good for almost a year i think. i was happy with her and the relationships i’ve had built with her but then i decided to open a comic book and i almost instantly fell in love ( ... at the second try, because i first came across the five years later era which really didn’t work as a starting point. but then i found legion lost and i’ve been hooked ever since ). that was the point i first started to take imra in a different direction. i switched faceclaims, rewrote her bio to include more comic canon but still tried to fit show canon into it all. it became a mess. i constantly switched things around when i learned more about her comic versions and tried to put all of these versions into one character ( even when things were clearly contradicting each other ) ― all of that without a single thought of what i was actually doing. but i continued doing it. and everything became messier and i didn’t have any direction what i wanted to do with her. i just continued writing her because i still loved her but looking back i honestly had no idea what i was doing. or who she was anymore because i meshed so many different things together that it left me confused ― which might be one of the reasons became less active and less happy with my portrayal with her. but i wanna change that now because as i always said, imra means so much to me. and that is basically the only thing that never changed throughout the years.

𝐛𝐮𝐭 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐚𝐦 𝐢 𝐠𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐚 𝐝𝐨 𝐧𝐨𝐰 ?

well, i’ve decided to do the same dc does every once in a while and completely reboot imra. i will try to do a completely fresh start, scrap everything i’ve done before and pretend like i just started writing her for the first time. all of that will be done on a new blog and while you’re all probably getting tired of me constantly moving blogs it’s the easiest way for me to do that. basically, i will reinvent both immy and me ― she’ll probably get a different backstory, a clearer characterization and hopefully more dynamics with all of you wonderful people. i’m bringing her back but i’ll do it right this time, with a clear direction and without meshing contradicting facts and canons together. i’ll take inspiration from everything there is, but i’ll ultimately bring her back to being as my very own new version of her. one that i’m actually going to be happy with.

so here are a few things that’ll happen:

i’m currently working on creating a new blog for her. i already saved a new url but i’m not gonna publish it here before i’ve finished everything else ― her bio, her verses, icons, and whatnot. 

all threads and asks will be dropped/deleted. i’m sorry about that but because this is meant as a completely new start, it wouldn’t make sense to keep old things. besides, we can always start new things.

if we’ve had some kind of dynamic in the past, i’m partially gonna scrap that as well. that doesn’t mean i don’t want that dynamic anymore but it might have to be adapted a little to fit my new canon/version of her.

#i hope this plan won't backfire on me #but right now i am happy with that decision #and i'm sure it'll make me more comfortable again #i just want to enjoy writing her #this seems to be the best and easiest way for me to do it

Video storage online isn't always secure. Websites can shut down or shut down. Here are some methods to back up your social video accounts to your personal laptop.

My personal story isn't one with much depth. I was born in America I went to college as a worker, then found my first job online. However, it does include some devastating moments where I thought that my life was done. One of those moments was when my home computer stopped working... After a little tweaking, acquiring a new desktop and moving my hard drive from my old one into new one I was able restore all the work on that drive. It took me three days of sweating, literally crying... I've learned one thing. To automatically or manually backup my entire day's work with Dropbox and personal FTP servers to ensure that nothing can ever be deleted.

This is not the most ideal option. The more data you store in your online storage, the more you have to spend to keep it. It's simple to use and appears extremely secure. It's very easy to access and can be downloaded anywhere where there's internet. But what happens if internet is not available? I always keep my laptop close at hand in these situations. It serves as my last refuge from the most difficult situations. They are connected in a RAID stack so that they copy each other and make sure that a backup is available in the event that one of the HDDs fails. Since I copy a lot of my files there, it's not often that my laptop will work. I do not want two drives to go out on the same day.

It's a site I utilize to download videos from Youtube, Instagram, Facebook, and other places. I am interested in politics and underground movements. Therefore, I record many live events, save some for the future and then publish them on Youtube. When I'm done live, I backup it to my laptop. That's the way I work. download youtube video online It also allows me to cross-post videos to various platforms. This means I can not just share a YouTube video on Facebook but also upload that same video on Facebook. This is a different video. So, over the last eight years, I've got 3TB worth of live feeds. Periscope lives are not lost.. and this site is very helpful for me.

It's as if it's magic. You can play the video you want to download using Periscope, Youtube, or Facebook. Copy its URL using the share link. Then I visit the website for video downloads to copy the URL, then click the button. In just a few minutes, I am presented with a variety of options to download videos. Periscope cannot be supported by every site. But this one can.

If you weren't aware that you could make windows copy commands that allow you to join these fragments to create a standard 1 long video file. The format used for video fragments is called MpegTS, sometimes referred to as transport stream. The stream includes all information needed to decode each fragment. They are completely independent of each other, which allows each new user to stream effortlessly. It saves browser data, too. Instead of downloading a 1hr file it downloads 360 x 10 second files. If you are only watching for 25 seconds, your player only downloads 3-4 fragments. The current 25-second segment is divided into 3-4 segments. This means you can reduce the amount of data you need by downloading only 25 seconds of video stream.

was born and raised in nyc baby ! she’s a true city girl, grew up in lower manhattan ( the financial district if u wanna get specific ) to a family with lots of $$$$ thanks to her father’s position as a ceo of an investment bank located on wall street 

life was pretty smooth until she was 17 and her father got arrested for embezzlement and fraud </3 it was actually a huge scandal for the investment bank he worked for because it was a whole group of higher ups who had been in on these crimes. basically a bunch of already rich men trying to get richer ... disgusting ik /: 

her life changed pretty drastically after that ! the hwang name was all over the news, their family was pretty much disgraced by high society in nyc, not a very fun time for anyone but especially not for violet’s mom 

after her dad got arrested violet was uhh high key furious with him for ruining their lives with his greed and she wanted nothing to do with him, but her mom couldnt let go. she was still defending him, spending the money they had left on lawyers which included the money the family had set aside for violet’s trust fund that she would have had access to once she was 18 </3

 so her plans for college changed pretty drastically JSDBJWBDJW ( goodbye ivy league education ) she actually ended up getting into the university of toronto for visual studies on an academic scholarship 

so she made the big move all on her own....moved into a tiny dorm...and vowed to reinvent herself. she didnt wanna be labeled as the daughter of a white collar criminal anymore so she just made it a point not to talk to much abt her past to anyone 

her struggles as someone who grew up with $$$$ turning into a broke college student made for some embarrassing but funny moments <3 luckily though everyone else had their own struggles so no one found it suspicious JSBDJWBDJ

when love alarm launched three years ago, violet had just started college so it was really the Big thing anyone and everyone was talking about. since she’d never been a fan of other dating apps, she wasn’t gonna download it but her roommate at the time convinced her ! at first it was fun, just something she didnt take too seriously 

fast forward to graduation and she’s snagged a job as an art director for a little local museum, doing freelance art directing on the side to help pay the bills. low and behold one day a photographer hires her to be the art director to a shoot they’re doing for a badge club member who was in a very high profile and public relationship at the time

violet ended up working with that photographer and badge club member a handful of times, enough for her to catch fee-🤢 catch feelin-🤢 i cant even say it .. she’d never rung anyone’s love alarm before, so of course her first time had to be with someone who was already taken </3 safe to say she ... freaked out 

she was embarrassed above all else, but also heartbroken bc in her head like ... why would someone who literally is part of an exclusive club based on ppl ringing their love alarm care that she rung theirs ? she didnt think it’d be a big deal to them the way it was to her ( but also didn’t stick around long enough to find out jsxbsjbdjw )

she comes across as ... kind of a bitch SDJBJWBJWBDW it’s truly not on purpose she just has a pretty serious resting expression most of the time ( so she looks mad or annoyed even when she isn’t ) and she’s pretty difficult to get to know ? not to mention the fact that no one has ever witnessed her ring someone’s love alarm .. so all that combined just makes it easy to assume she’s some sort of ice queen when that’s far from the truth /: 

violet really isn’t one to open up too deep to people, but that’s got a lot to do with the past she’s kind of running away from ! so if you’re her friend most of the stuff you know about her is probably surface stuff, but when she’s close to someone she can make that fact hard to realize ? she just has a way with making the people in her life feel important so it’s easy not to be focused on how much you know about her 

never bothers to correct the people that misjudge her. if you don’t like her, if you want to make up assumptions and rumors about her, go ahead like violet really won’t stop you which can sometimes make meeting new people difficult </3 if you’ve seen the dating class webdrama chuu was in she’s kinda like oh seyoung’s chara joowon 🤧

if she wants to, though, she’s pretty good at getting people to like her / trust her ! she does this a lot in professional situations, which is why she’s been doing so well as an art director so far despite being so young 

she’s also very loyal to her friends ! if you can’t ask for extra sauces at mcdonald’s....if you can’t make a phone call to your credit card company explaining that a $3,000 charge to starbucks wasn’t you.....she’s your girl <3 since she’s relatively not bothered by the way people see her ( unless it has to do with her past ) she’s usually the one speaking up if someone she cares about can’t

Chapter four - fears and starlight

Her name is Lex. She has bright red hair and a body to die for. She knows how to move in all the right ways and how to make Angel feel good. Her skin is warm against his as their bodies are tangled with each other in his bed.

Any other day, he would be caught up completely in the bliss of a gorgeous woman’s body. Not this time though. This time all he can think about is how he wishes the hair was blond and the eyes were a deep shade of brown. How this isn’t enough. Not anymore.

How much that thought scares him.

When it’s all over and done with and Lex falls into an exhausted slumber, Angel crawls out of bed, puts on his boxers and sits on the porch steps of his house.

It’s the very early hours of the morning and Santo Padre is quiet. It feels peaceful. Comfortable. It’s rare moments like these when Angel’s mind seems so loud and the world seems so stil, that he really feels the gravity of it all. That he feels just how lonely he really is. How the girls in his bed will never fill the void. How the familiall bond he found with the MC will never be a proper substitute for what he’s missing with his blood family.

How his heart aches for the love of another person. Fatherly love. Brotherly love.

The love of a blonde single mother.

And it scares him because, despite what others might think — what his dad might think, Angel is not an idiot. Callie is soft touches and warm smiles and love. She’s too good for him in all ways considered. He’s all gloomy and sad and angry and she’s — magic.

Angel doesn’t regret the path he chose but it’s moments like these where he wonders what could be if he had taken another. If he cared a little more about academics, tried a little harder, reached out a little further. If he made his dad a little prouder, protected EZ a bit better. If all was different, would he be a good enough man for Callie ?

The sun slowly starts to rise and cover the street in a glow of pinks and blues. Angel wonders if she watches the sunrise too. And he knows that’s some real pussy shit to think about and that his brothers would have his balls if they ever found out he was thinking such things. But he does anyway. Because it’s the early hours of the morning and everything is quiet around him and his head is so loud and it’s nice to indulge in a future he can never have but so desperately wishes he could.

It’s later that day, when Angel is slumped down on his dad’s couch absentmindedly watching some 90s TV show rerun on tv, that EZ enters the room casual as always.

“ The fuck are you doing here ? “

At his older brother’s exclamation of dismay, EZ raises his eyebrow in confusion.

“ Uh. Was gonna say hi, see how pops is doing ? Why ? “

“ Nah. You’re supposed to be watching Callie “ a ball of anger builds inside of Angel’s stomach. It’s red hot fury. He’s supposed to keep the girls safe. His trust lies in EZ to be his eyes, his ears. Be the knight in shining armour he denies himself to be. He’s too much of a villain to ever play that role entirely.

“ She sent me away. Angel I’ve been watching her house from the moment she left the scrapyard last night, no sight of the car anywhere. She’s at work now but she insisted I leave. Her customers are mostly old ladies and apparently they’re aren’t too fond of a dude on a motorcycle watching the store at all times. That’s reasonable, honestly. “

“ Are you stupid ? Of course she was gonna send you away. That doesn’t mean you gotta leave, just keep some distance you — “

Angel can’t finish the sentence though, as his dad interrupts him with a loud cough.

“ What are ladies bickering about again, huh? One would think I raised a bunch of hens. Goats maybe. “

“ Don’t worry, old man “ Angel waves him off. This is none of his dad’s concern really. He doesn’t want or need him to get involved in this. He’d just be another reminder that Angel will never be good enough for Callie.

“ I do worry. It’s what comes with the whole parenting ordeal. “ Felipe grumbles.

“ Angel she didn’t want me there. I am not going to force my protection on her. “ EZ starts to reason again, before another interruption from their father.

“ Her ? who’s her ? “

“ Callie “ EZ answers.

“ Who is Callie ? “

“ It doesn’t matter “ Angel replies. Only it does. Because she’s all that’s on his mind recently and it’s stupid and ridiculous because he just met her a few weeks ago. She’s just a girl. Only she is so much more and it’s fucking terrifying.

“ Is she the one with the little girl ? “

Angel doesn’t reply, just bites his lip in frustration. This isn’t how this was supposed to go. In a different world where his dad loved him enough, he would be delighted to talk to him about Callie. In a different world she’d be his and he’d bring her around for BBQs with his dad — and maybe his mom, and they’d embarrass him with old baby pictures and he’d pretend to hate it but secretly love it for the smile it’d put on Callie’s face.

But that world is not the one he lives in. The one he lives in greets him with a look of pure frustration and disapproval on his father’s face.

“ Angel. She’s a mother. Don’t get her involved in this. “

This. Involved in this. It means involved in him. He knows it and it breaks his fucking heart to hear his insecurities voice by his own father. He knows it’s a terrible idea but to have his dad confirm his fear is — too much.

So he reacts the way he always does. With anger.

“ This ? What is this exactly huh ? Me. You can say it. Don’t get her involved with me. I know that’s what you want to say. I know that’s what you think. And honestly you’re probably right. She’s most definitely too good for me but maybe she could see something else, you know ? Something more ? She thinks I’m a good guy. She — she makes me want to be better. Enough. Something I could never be for you, for this family. Maybe this time I can be. “

He shrugs off the hand that EZ rests on his shoulder to try and keep him calm. There’s no staying calm aymore. For too long, Angel has sat in his anger and hurt and frustration. Letting it gnaw at him and devour pieces of his heart little by little.

Not anymore. Not any longer.

The wind lashes around him as he speeds down the streets of the outskirts of Santo Padro. His anger dissipating with every mile. The adrenalin, the rush, it helps him calm down. Just like punching stuff does. Just like sex does. He’s been on the road for hours, the day almost making room for the sun to set.

Maybe his father is right though. Maybe he should end it now. Not contact her again. Stay away and let her live her life in peace and quiet and find a proper man who can take care of her and the little one.

But that thought kills him a little inside. Because he’s not ready to let go of the spark, no matter how dim it is. How little light it actually spends. Even a small spark can start a fire.

He finds himself at her door, stomach tied in knots. He’s never been nervous about meeting a girl before. But those girls didn’t really mean as much. They weren’t his spark.

There’s laughter ringing through the house and Angel has to think back to the days when laughter lived at his home. When he was younger and careless and happy. When mom was alive and when dad was in love and when things were … good. When he had a family.

Callie opens the door with a huge smile on her face and a strand of blond hair falling across her face while the rest is pulled into a messy ponytail. She’s wearing denim shorts and a shirt that looks two sizes too big for her. There’s flour on her cheek and sauce on her collar.

Angel thinks she’s never looked more perfect.

“ Hi “ she says and smiles that gorgeous smile that has become a source of heart palpitations for Angel.

“ Hey. I uh — “

What Angel ? He asks himself. I was in the area ? That’s bullshit. Tell her the truth.

“ I wanted to see you. “

She takes a breath but the smile doesn’t fall not for a single second.

“ You wanna come in ? We made pasta. Spaghetti sauce is store bought though. Hope that’s alright ? “

And for the first time that day, Angel smiles.

“ That’s perfect. “

The tv plays cartoons in the background while little Daisy is fast asleep on the couch.

Angel wonders what it feels like to be a parent. What that unconditional love feels like. If that even exists. It seems to exist with Callie and Daisy. It used to exist with his mother. He wonders if it goes away at some point. Because he sure all hell hasn’t felt any of that love from his dad in a long time.

Callie pours another glass of wine, perched on the little white fold out chair on her balcony, and watches as Angel’s eyes seem to gloss over with — nostalgia ?

The night is dark, only illuminated by the stars and the fairy lights placed all around the balcony and the light coming from inside the house.

“ She’s cute isn’t she ? “

The corner of Angel’s lips pull up into a little grin. “ You know she is. Did good there. “

“ Yeah I did “

The pride her words hold, is so all consuming, Angel finds himself feeling almost jealous. Pride is something he never got to experience at home and maybe that’s his own fault but it doesn’t make it any easier.

“ Hey uh — thanks for sending EZ to keep an eye on us. I know I said you shouldn’t and I know I sent him away but I did feel quite a lot safer last night knowing he was outside watching out for us. “

“ Of course. Gotta keep you save. “

“ But you don’t “ Callie replies “ you don’t have to do it but you do it anyway. I appreciate it. “

“ Well you don’t gotta invite me in for dinner and make me feel like — “ he sighs wondering if he should speak the following words but unable to stop himself “ — like I’m part of a family for an evening. Even if it’s just for a few hours it means a shit ton. “

The deep brown of her eyes seems to come alive with a whirlwind of emotions. There’s so many and Angel can’t name a single one because they all blend into one another so perfectly.

And she doesn’t say anything at first, just places her hand on his. And it’s soft and warm and wonderful.

“ You can be a part of our little world any time you want. I owe you that. “

“ You don’t owe me shit. But would you — would you want me to be ? “

Callie takes a sip of her wine and looks to the side, mulling over her words. There’s no right or wrong here just honesty. There’s no pressure and yet it feels like the weight of the world is resting on both their shoulders. And shouldn’t this be easy ? Shouldn’t this be the most simple answer on earth ?

And maybe it is because Yes she wants him here. But Yes is the hardest word to say sometimes. Because it means more than just that. It means letting him in. Letting him be a part of her life and, by extend, that of Daisy. It’s giving a part of their little world to him and it’s crazy really because since he stumbled into it a few weeks ago, he’s already been occupying her mind. Little by little taking over her heart.

She doesn’t love him. Because love is complex and confusing and something that takes time. But there’s no doubt in her mind that she can love him. That she can learn to let him in.

“ I’m terrified ” she confesses.

“ Why ? “

“ Because I like how this feels and I like the idea of more nights like this. I like to think of what could be and I’m scared that it’s not gonna turn out this way. That it’s gonna crash and burn and hurt both me and Daisy. “

“ It — “ he doesn’t get to speak out though, as Callie goes on.

“ I’m even more scared of what happens if it does turn out the way I wish it did. I’m scared that I get another chance at love and that things become magical again and that life is good and then when it is, it gets taken from me again. I can’t go through that again. Daisy can’t. She was too little to understand then but she’s grown. She’s old enough now. “

“ I’m scared too. “ Angel answers truthfully. And really, to hear his doubts reflected in her is both terrifying and comforting all at once. Because things are only half as scary if you go through them with someone else, aren’t they ?

“ Well we shouldn’t be, thought. Good things aren’t scary, right ? “

Angel softly takes her face in his hand, making her focus on him and him entirely. And it’s like the quiet night takes them in and covers them in a veil of silence and starlight. And all that is there is the electricity between them and the beatings of their hearts.

“ I think some things are worth it. Facing your fears and all. I’m gonna try all I got, to make this one worth it. And we don’t have to go all in immediately I just — I need to know this isn’t one sided. You’re all that’s been on my mind since you showed up at the clubhouse looking for Jess. I can’t explain this and yeah it fucking terrifies me too but god am I ready to face this head on. I’m not the best catch but I can be the best version of myself. I can. “

Callie only nods, her face so close he can feel her breath on his lips, her nose brushing his.

“ Sorry for being so fucking cheesy “ he whispers, lips brushing hers as he speaks.

“ No. No, keep talking. You’re making me fall in love with you. “

And as her lips meet his, Angel feels like that spark has become something more. This feels right even if it shouldn’t. Even if he’s never going to be good enough. Even if he’ll never be deserving of her. The spark is now a wildfire and it’s consuming everything.

Angel doesn’t think he’s ever felt anything better than her lips on his. Callie thinks he’s a magnificent kisser.

We had a great time chatting with @crispychrissy today! Thank you so much, Chrissy, for joining us!

This month, to make up for not having a chat in June, we chatted for two hours about some issues related to posting your works on Tumblr. Chrissy talked to us about making our own gifs, we discussed giving credit to gifmakers, how to make a Keep Reading cut, and much more!! A rundown of the chat, as well as general Pond news, is below the cut!

[Editor’s Note: For ease of understanding, the tags you put at the bottom of a post with a # will be called #hash-tags, while the tags you use to notify another Tumblr user that you’ve posted something will be called @mention-tags.]

Q: What programs do you use to make gifs? Are they free, or do you have to buy them?

Chrissy: Well, there is a free one I used back when I started called GifCam. It's easy to set up (it's just an exe) and there's a little learning curve, but it's easier than what I do now. I currently use a screen capture program that came with my $1500 graphics card along with Sony Vegas. If anyone wants GifCam, I can send it to them.

Q: And are you watching via Netflix or some other way?

C: Yes, I use Netflix. I have the first 6 seasons on DVD along with 12 and 13, so for bloopers and deleted scenes I have to use the DVD's. For current episodes, I have YouTube TV, and use the screen capture option with that. Tumblr has a 3MB limit on file size, so it’s really hard. The amount of frames you can fit in a sub-3MB gif depend on so many factors. Colors in the scene, movement, FPS (frames per second), and length. A low FPS gif looks pretty choppy, while a high FPS gif is smooth as butter.

Q: So that's why some gifs seem to go on forever, and others are quick things.

C: Yes. I can make a really long gif of something that's really really tiny, but if you want it to fit into the pixels of a Tumblr post, it limits how long they can be.

Q: And I guess that's also why some gifs I find from Google and try to put into a post won't animate right. If they're too big, I guess Tumblr stops them?

C: Yes. Tumblr just freezes the image instead of animating it. When you save it, check the file size.

C: So this is an example of the brightness and colors of a gif affecting the size. Since there's so much brightness and color, the more the gif has to render, meaning the bigger the size. This worked out to be only 35 frames, which is like... really small, but the gif itself came out to be 2.83 MB.

Q: Are websites that come up when I Google "gif maker" worth my time and effort?

C: Only if you don't mind a stupid watermark from the company.

Q: About giving credit to gifmakers....any thoughts?

C: Well, all my gifs have "cc" in the bottom right corner, that's how I give myself credit if they're used. Not everyone knows the "cc" gifs are mine, but I do. I offer my gif making services to anyone if they need a specific gif made for a story or otherwise, not limited to SPN. I've made porn gifs, ones from YouTube, and from other shows. If it exists, I can gif it. Tumblr's search feature is... well, it's not perfect, but it'll help give you a quick gif and give credit to the author. When someone uses a gif I've posted, it gives me a notification, which is awesome, but annoying if it gets reposted a crap ton. It also links the person back to the original post and who posted it.

Q: Some folks seem to think that if they grab a gif from Google, just saying they found it on Google is giving credit. I know this isn't the case. (I mistakenly thought that pasting the link to the image would allow folks to click through to where I found it, but discovered last night that's not the case.) If I found a gif on Google that was yours and used it, and provided a link to the page where Google found it, would that be enough, do you think?

C: Sometimes a reverse image search can be helpful, but it mostly doesn't work with gifs. That would be fine for me. Like I said, I have "cc" in the corner so that's me marking the gif as one of mine. I can't control where someone reposts them or uses them. There's a difference between reposting it to a site like Pinterest or using my gif on a LiveJournal post and saving it and reuploading it like it's yours and without giving me credit. One is malicious, the other isn't. I have a problem with the latter.

Q: I started looking at where Google finds gifs last night, and noticed that sites like gfycat have whole pages of gifs, and just citing that page might not be enough. (And trying to find where Google found them many times leads to a Tumblr blog that’s now gone.)

C: Google finds gifs all over the place. Someone can take my gif from Tumblr and reupload it to a bunch of different websites, all which would show up in a Google search. It's hard to find the original poster when it happens. Yeah, people delete their pages, but the gif stays. If you get to that point, just say, “Gif found on Google, unable to find original post"

Q: Speaking of finding gifs, how does the search function work on Tumblr? Is it just whatever the post was tagged with or the first 5 tags like regular searches or something else entirely?

After some discussion, we all decided that the gif search uses whatever #hash-tags are on a post where a gif is used, and then makes that gif searchable by that #hash-tag. So, if you make a post about chronic pain and use a gif of the Winchesters hugging, that gif will then show up in the gif search under #chronic pain. Also, popularity of the gif ensures it shows up at the top of the search. As people stop using a gif, it eventually falls out of the search results.

Q: Going back to file sizes...Do the dimensions of the source video (like watching Netflix/YouTube in full screen vs in a smaller window) impact the size of the gif, specifically with GifCam?

C: Now, that's a HUGE reason why I switched the way I make gifs. Netflix has a set streaming rate, which is only optimized at full screen. So the smaller you make the window to get it to fit into the size of the gif, the more degraded the image is. (Some confusion was expressed, so she continued to explain it further.) Netflix likes to run as big as possible. It wants as many pixels it can get to show you an image. If you minimize the window, it kind of freaks out and has to quickly scramble to make everything smaller so the video keeps playing. It does that by squishing everything down, making the image look weird. It might not be too noticeable when you look at it, but when you make gifs, they're gonna come out lookin all wonky.

Q: So, you have to make the Netflix window smaller in order to capture the images with the gif-making software? The gif-making software can't capture full screen?

C: GifCam will record the gif based on the window size. You gotta squish the window down to make it a reasonable size to fit on Tumblr. Other programs, which you might have to pay for, might be able to capture full screen and do the squishing for you. (Side note: during this discussion, Chrissy gave us some examples, and in showing them to us, revealed that a good gif size for Tumblr is around 410-430 wide, 230-250 high.)

After that, we moved on to other topics that had been brought up in the Pond survey a while back. 

How to make a Keep Reading cut and when you should use it.

Note: Although this worked for one person on the app, it doesn’t seem to work for all, and we’re not sure why. There are too many variables to determine the root cause for why it doesn’t always work. 

Q: "When should I give someone credit for being a beta (for example: I bounced ideas with someone for a minute or two but they didn’t technically beta read it; I can’t decide between X and Y (with no context), pick one)"

A: Always mention anyone who helped you. You don’t have to say they beta-read your story, but at least mention that they helped, even if they didn’t know it! Gratitude is always a good thing!! Writing takes a village, and being thankful for help is courteous, kind, caring, and helps you to make friends that will be the same right back to you.

How do I add my masterlist for my blog description?

Note: Chrissy pointed out that if you change your bio by hitting “edit appearance” instead of “edit theme” the link will break, so be careful where you add this! These things and more can be found in the Pond FAQ list!!

Q: The facts on search issues (re: links, tags, and anything else that keeps a fic from being “searchable”)

A: A lot of testing and research went into trying to figure this out, and we still probably don’t have it all figured out, but we learned some interesting things!

Most importantly, since we have a lot of smut writers, if you use the #hash-tag #NSFW on your post, your post will NOT show up in any searches!!

Adding an external link should not cause your post to be unsearchable, but that’s not guaranteed. According to Tumblr’s own help pages, “some links may cause posts to be hidden from recent search results.” Since spambots use external links in their posts, this will always be something that could possibly interfere with your post being searchable.

According to Tumblr: “Blogs that have been either self-flagged or flagged by us as “explicit” per our old policy (before December 17, 2018), will not show up in search. Users under 18 are still not allowed to click through to see the content of these blogs. If you think your blog has been erroneously marked as explicit, you can file an appeal by following these instructions.”

When you are searching for your post, make sure you are looking at Most Recent posts, not Most Popular! 

Some things to know about searching:

There are two ways to search a blog. If you use the search box at the top, then your results will have a URL like this:  https://spnfanficpond.tumblr.com/search/big-fish-chat

However, that is not the only way you can search your blog. If you look at a post, and click on one of the tags on that post, your results will have a URL like this: https://spnfanficpond.tumblr.com/tagged/big-fish-chat

The first search will look through all of the text in a post to find the words you’re searching for. The second search will only look for posts with that specific tag. If a blog doesn’t have a search box in its theme, you can type these searches in manually, and they will still work.

You can also do these searches manually through all of Tumblr. Keep this in mind when you’re doing your general Tumblr search and check the URL of your results, because... “search” & “tagged” look at #hash-tags differently!

(This is so confusing, we know.)

“Search” will look through 20 #hash-tags. “Tagged” will only look through 5 #hash-tags. So, put your most important #hash-tags in your first 5!!

Q: Can you talk about xkit?

A: xkit is awesome and we should all bow down to the xkit guy because he fixes things when Tumblr poops on the carpet. Seriously. It’s only for use on desktop, but it makes Tumblr so much easier to manage.

xkit is an extension for your browser. Look for New xkit, and download that. Once you have xkit loaded, click on the xkit icon near the top right of your screen. When the xkit window pops up, click on Get Extensions. We could suggest a list of the best extensions, but they’re all seriously awesome. Blacklist seems to be the most common, as it filters out posts you don’t want to see based on tags and text. Auto Tagger, Activity+, Outbox, One-Click Postage, and Quick Tags are all ridiculously useful for everyday blogging. The whole thing is super easy to learn and use, and you can’t break anything while you’re learning. Some extensions, like Blacklist, may slow your computer down when you’re surfing your dash because they essentially surf it ahead of you and manipulate it. If you start seeing problems, you can disable any extensions you decide you don’t want to use, anymore.

Seriously, it’s freaking awesome.
