Thinking about the remaining OG Eggs

Thinking about Chayanne being the eldest and having the mentality of a warrior. How guilty he feels about putting all of his siblings in danger when he received the threat. How he is arguably one of the most clingy eggs, always being with Phil and Tallulah, and gets bad anxiety when he is away from them. How he blamed himself for his siblings dying and saying he failed. How he cooks and provides for his siblings and family and makes sure they are safe. How whenever he sees his siblings he always checks up on them and makes sure they are okay. How Phil raised him on Hardcore mode and how careful he has to be.

Thinking about Ramon being very independent and curious and knows that so much weights on his shoulders. How Ramon loves explosives and probably is the egg with the most ‘downs’, but yet loves flowers and cats with his whole heart. How Ramon saved his siblings due to him investigating, only to basically have a panic attack in Fit’s Gym and thinking he hasnt done anything useful. How Ramon nearly died because he wanted to save his siblings from getting killed by the Code. How he knows about Fit’s mission and created a giant satellite for him because he doesnt want his Dad to go back to that hellscape.

Thinking about Dapper and how he is smart, resourceful, kind and yet self sacrificing and scared. How Dapper was hunted by the Code Monster more than any other egg. How Dapper grew up in paranoia and moving around, keeping all his stuff in his backpacks. How Dapper made his siblings proper graves and visits them every month to sing happy birthday to them. How Dapper was hurting himself and experimenting so he could make things useful for others. How Dapper has been writing down notes and information about plants and animals so people can use that after he dies. How Dapper couldnt celebrate his sister's birthday because it was the same day he died and it consumed him for that day.

Thinking about Leo being the youngest out of their remaining siblings and how much she love she has in her tiny eggshell. How Leo went out of her way to give Chayanne a hug when they woke up from their comas because Chayanne protected her the whole time. How Leo shot out of her bed that one time Bobby was downed and was begging Foolish to go help Bobby even though they had no way to get to him. How Leo built giant pixel art around Foolishs dragon and how every part of Foolish’s base and the surrounding area around it was decorated by Leo. How Leo was one of the first people to arrive to Ramons house to try to save Ramon during his nightmare and held Ramon’s dead body, refusing to even move an inch away from him ; later on hopelessly begging Foolish to revive Ramon like he did earlier with one of her pets.

Thinking about the remaining OG eggs and how they watched their siblings die over and over again. Thinking about all of them surviving on one life basically since the beginning. Thinking about how they watched this island unfold into horrible prison, just like their parents did. Thinking about how they had death knocking on their door multiple times and yet are still alive. Thinking about how much they love and care about each other. Thinking about how much of themselves are spread all across the island.

Chayanne, Leo, Dapper, and Ramon are the oldest siblings, but they are still kids. They had to grow up too fast and fight for so long. They have been through hell and back. They all feel responsible for their younger siblings and want to protect them as much as possible. They've always had the weight on the world on their shoulders.

Chayanne and the Triplets grew up in a world that hated them, but never stopped giving love back to the world.

Joltik's adoption event sat in the drafts for quite a while. It took me whole a day to implement and I didn't let myself sleep until I finished everything. (It's 1 PM now...)

The event ended up wildly different because of how extra custom pets are implemented. You would think that they would be added in the same way as you get your cat/dog that you select during character creation. No. You have to buy a license. Only Marnie is authorized to sell them.

Emmet: @! Joltik likes you verrrrry much. They want to stay with you. I'm letting you adopt them. Yup. I filled out all the paperwork. The Joltiks are legally documented now. 

I never gave ours a name... Galvantula wouldn't let me. She is verrrry picky about it. But that's okay. Joltik is yours. You should name them. She came along for approval. So. What name should I put on the adoption form?

[Galvantula pauses for a moment to think and then offhandedly agrees.]

Emmet: Galvantula didn't shock me for that. That name is okay. Yup. I will file that with the Ferngill Republic. Don't worry about it. Make sure you take verrrry good care of our little Joltik!

The whole naming portion was a source of much more frustration than it should have been. In events, the name input box is brought up by the "catQuestion" command (which applies to dogs chosen at the start, too...

If you refuse, then Marnie also shows up no matter what you do. Farmhouse positions are also tricky and made even harder to find reference for after 1.6 added the farmhouse being moveable. Joltik kept spawning where Emmet was supposed to be so I had to use a move command just to get them to spawn one tile to the side. Galvantula was fine. I didn't get to updating her vanilla portraits yet so she's staying quiet.

The catQuestion command also only adds the pet you pick during character creation. There's no fields to target the usage. You have to buy a license. It's the only way to get another pet. I didn't want Joltik to replace a cat either since in-story you would have to earn the trust of both Emmet and Galvantula... There's no way you can do that by the first 25 days of spring. It's immersion breaking and you lose a cat.

I did find the license aspect funny though. It was oddly fitting for the mod's lore of Pokemon being pretty much banned from the region. Emmet is a threat to Stardew Valley's ecosystem. Not the best guy for the task of combating anti-Pokemon xenophobia.

Pet sizes are apparently hardcoded so I had to make a new spritesheet for Joltik as if they even need a 32 x 32 pixel area per frame. I did end up making new sprites for them while I was at it. I tried to base it off of the cat's behaviors so I have less animation fields to edit (I was tired). The cat loafs a lot. Trying to convey that in a tiny spider posed quite the challenge.

After everything was done, I figured that the whole adoption portion of the mod could easilly be taken apart to be its own mod as a demo of sorts for the expansion. So I went and made a content pack to post.

Bringing up your starter pet's friendship level takes quite some time, so it would be awkward if I let the event play with no preconditions. Because of that, I ended up including Joltik as an NPC and locking their adoption behind their heart level.

We actually only had two lines per day of the week (not including season) for daily dialogue. That shot up to six lines per day of the week for a full 0-2-4-6-8-10 in spring because I was determined to publish a mod. (I've been modding for nearly a year nonstop and I don't have anything playable... humiliating...)

Anyways! I hope you're all having fun with 1.6! It certainly brought new challenges and opportunities to the modding scene!

Slides in as another person who had a pet rabbit- hello hi lmao<3

Absolutely useless but interesting things about rabbits:

1. Their tails are actually longer than most people think. They just usually tuck them under their butts lol.

2. If you chase a rabbit their strategy is to run away as long as they can but if they feel that you're too close they fall to the ground immediately, pressing themselves down and blending with environment. Usually predators are so caught up in trying to be as fast as possible to catch them that they miss the exact moment when the rabbit just stopped running and the rabbit has a chance to flee!

3. When the rabbit is angry or annoyed they stomp. Yeah you talk to it and it just interrupts you by stomping with their back legs because how dare you.

4. They're also longer than you think. If the rabbit is comfortable in your presence they're going to lay down and stretch their body to a very long rabbit baguette kfkdjf

5. Some wild rabbits and hares tend to bury their young to protect them from predators who can sense their scent. They unbury them back when mom is back from collecting food!!

6. Day or two before giving birth mom makes a nest from her own fur, so the babies are not cold, as they're almost bald for the first few days fkjfjf.

7. Mine really enjoyed being squeezed! She could purposefully bury herself under my neck when I'm laying down so the weight is on her😭💕 Also tiny rabbit kisses!! Very small tongue<333

To be fair! Hares are so unhinged and different compared to rabbits. Live alone, don't burrow, babies are ready to survive from the day 1, females box males if find them annoying... Y'know, the usual nature things kfkdks. Anyway sorry for info dump, thought it could be interesting!

So just remember, whatever YOU did today is enough, okay? You're making progress, bit by bit in whatever you're dealing with right now, and it doesn't have to happen all at once. Look at what you did today, and be proud of yourself because you made a huge, or a tiny step forward, and that is STILL A STEP FORWARD, and you can be proud of yourself for that.

One of the hardest things that I struggle with is that I have started to understand my own boundaries, and my own limits-- and sometimes other people don't respect those (none of you, don't worry). There's going to be people in this life, sometimes people close to you, who are supposed to be supportive, but they're dealing with their own struggles and sometimes try to push you past your boundaries for their own sake.

This is just a gentle reminder, that even if THEY tell you that you/what you're doing isn't good enough, that's absolutely NOT true, okay lovelies? You are doing enough. You are going at your own pace, and that is perfectly acceptable, and absolutely necessary for you to keep going.

Don't destroy yourself for their piece of mind. You deserve better than that. Go at your own pace. You're doing great. Be proud of yourself-- I'm proud of you. Hope you all have a wonderful Friday/Early Saturday Lovelies. Take care okay?

An Unhinged Animal Crossing ramble

I haven't played my Animal Crossing file in over a year, but damn did it help me through college.

I don't know about any of y'all, but I made backstories for the villagers on my Island, and they all had connections and families. I made lore for these adorable little bundle of pixels.

Some of these backstories are ridiculous and silly. And I'm okay with that. This post is for me, I am this post's target audience. If you like my nonsense, that's on you.

Mac and Cherry are siblings, Mac being the overly enthusiastic younger brother while Cherry's the cool and aloof big sister. Cherry left home to start her music career, and she's doing pretty alright as an indie solo act. Mac wants to be a wrestler, but misses his big sis, so he kinda set out to follow her. Cherry used to find him super annoying and was really pissed that he followed her, but their relationship is getting better. She's learned to appreciate she always has him in her corner, and has started to return the favor for Mac's training. Mac was the first to move to the island, as a great private spot for training, and talked Cherry into moving in when she was done with her current tour.

Clyde is literally just vibes. He's a country boy, but his rural neighborhood is getting encroached on by suburbs. So, he became a backpacker, looking for somewhere not very busy or high pressure to settle down. He has a passion for woodworking and bug collecting and has formed an unlikely friendship with his neighbor Julia. Tiny brain with a massive heart. Doesn't know what a politic is, doesn't wanna know what a politic is. Would think a huge cheese wheel is an appropriate gift for a first date.

Julia wanted a fresh start, with her new name and identity (because you cannot look at her and tell me she isn't trans). With a dream to be a fashion designer, she transitioned very publicly and said so long to everyone who knew the old her. She is a high demand city girl, but got tired of the grind and questions and judgement. So, she retreated to the island to collect her thoughts, get inspiration, and just vibe in a place where no one knew who she was. She has expensive tastes, but has found an unlikely friendship in the kind but simple farm boy next door.

(Yes, I do think there is a Halmark Christmas Movie ass romance story waiting to happen here, don't judge me)

Gruff and Vladimir know each other. They know each other far too well. Two bosses of different families, families with some less than savory business practices. Vladimir moved into town from the old country, and muscled in on Gruff's turf. The two hated each other at first, constantly plotting the other's downfall, until they discovered a mutual desire to protect their family. Gruff has his niece Chevre, while Vladimir has his granddaughter Meagan. They saw eye to eye, at least enough to not try and kill the other. It more became a game to them, and soon they covered for each other from the cops. Gruff came to the island first, mostly as a way to finally get out of the city, but wasn't alone for long. Before she moved away, Meagan tipped Vladimir that Gruff was at the island, and he soon followed. Now they take pot shots at each other in the form of old man banter, sometimes with graphic murder plots, and no one can really tell if they're joking or not.

(This is the part you're gonna have to go with me on this)

Marina and Cephalebot are an unlikely duo. She claims that he's her younger brother, but everyone can see there's something off about him. He's adopted, but from where, no one knows. Except the family (There's so few octopi villagers I just like to think they're all a family, okay?). Marina found him in a crater in a corn field, with no memory or understanding of where he was. So, she decided that was brother material enough. In reality, Cephalebot is an alien probe. He was sent to Earth to study the local life and report back (kinda like Eve from Wall-E), but crash landed. He felt welcomed and loved by the family that helped him, so he decided to stick around. So, he lives as a resident of the planet he was meant to study, constantly learning how to vibe as an Earthling. He comes across as weird and a little invasive, but he means well. Marina, however is all that she seems on the outside. She is sweet, she loves pink, and she's the big sister everyone would want. She's also surprisingly handy with a screwdriver (because she's learned how to repair Ceph if needed). Marina came to the island as a perfect beach house spot, noticed all the bugs and fish in the area, and called Ceph to join her because of how much he likes studying the wildlife.

Drago is the heir to a powerful family (either business or actual royalty I can't decide), but does not have a cutthroat bone in his body. He's gentle where his parents are ruthless. He gets called an idiot and soft all the time, and no amount of "training" ever makes him a cruel person. He had enough one day, and bailed. He took some money, some snacks, and left. He found the island as the perfect escape from his family, and set up shop pretty quickly. He gets a little nervous around some of the stronger personalities, but quickly warms up when he realizes none of them are as vicious as the ones he left behind. He hangs out with Clyde at snack time, helps Shino with her performances, and even likes listening to Vlad and Gruff's old man ramblings.

Shino is not of this realm originally. She was a demon, summoned by a jealous actress to sabotage her rival. She took on the mortal form she now inhabits as a way to get closer to her target, but something else captured her interest. She fell in love with the stage, with the attention she received for her own skills. So, she ditched her contract and set to travel the world as an actress in her own right. She writes plays and poems, and performs them for whatever audience she can find. She moved to the island for similar reasons as to Julia, to refresh and get some new inspiration. She found that she liked it there, and has made an unlikely friendship with Drago, an always willing audience member.

Honestly? I'd like a 2D animal crossing

Okay. Let's consider that.

What would have to change to make an Animal Crossing game work in 2D?

In Population Growing, the first game on the N64 and GameCube, both the human player and regular animal villagers had only one kind of outfit with any textures, built in or custom designed, applying to the player's shirt/dress and hat alike, and to villagers' shirts. Those shirts were baked into the villagers' models. Likewise, special characters had their outfits as part of their 3D models.

In New Horizons each villager species comes with its own set of outfit models, as does the player. The main difference to the first game is that they can technically wear nothing just as well as have sleeveless long tops or short tops with sleeves.

All this, for both games, helps make clothes fit every villager.

However: in the GBA Animal Island mini-game part of Population Growing, which could be considered the nearest thing to a 2D sprite-based AC, each islander is only ever shown in one character-specific outfit. So no matter what, 2D sprite Ankha is only ever seen in her red aloha outfit. Presumably. Islander sprites are tiny.

Assuming a reasonable resolution and therefore sprite size, different villager species should have different physical looks. You could build them up from separate parts no problem — head, tail, body, maybe separate arms, and clothing to match — but the nature of 2D makes the clothes a big fucking issue.

For every single clothing item in the game, you'd need a full sprite sheet. If we go with Population Growing style sleeveless tops only, things remain manageable in that you'd need frames for facing sideways, up, down, maybe diagonally up and down, and maybe bending over or lying down. But then you'd have to do it all over again for other species' builds, as Rocket is easily twice the size of Agent S.

That's way too many sprites. That's an explosive amount.

There's the idea of having outfit sprites that are basically rainbow vomit, where each specific pixel color can be mapped to a point on a texture, including opacity so you can shape the result. But I don't know how to possibly make such a sprite, and there's the idea that there's only so many colors available, plus shading. At a reasonable size for a reasonable resolution, you'd quickly run out of rainbow vomit.

(A few minutes later...)

The same trick would do well for the characters wearing the outfits.

But at that point you'd be better off just using 3D models.

It’d been only a few days since he’d arrived to Briar Valley, and already a part of him missed home. The days here were gloomy, the sun hardly breaching the dark forests that surrounded the land. Any greenery here lacked the vibrant colors that Afterglow flora had, and even the animals were scarce aside from woodland creatures here and there. The locals weren’t any more lively, always dressed as if they were attending a funeral at any given moment. 

He wonders if his father had actually meant this to be a punishment of sorts. After all, why send away one of his sons to serve another kingdom. How could this be honorable when the difference in their cultures was so apparent? So what if the kingdoms had exchanged warriors in the past? If anything, it felt more like the king just wanted to get rid of him for good...

He sets those thoughts aside as he makes his way to Prince Malleus’s room, preparing to start the day of accompanying the royal. The other hardly left the castle grounds, making his job easy for most of the time. The real trouble typically came in the late nights when the prince would wander off into the foreboding forests that made up the backyard of the palace.

Thankfully, there was still time before then, Leona finding the prince sitting quietly in one of the ornate rooms, his back towards the beastman. The dragon gives no indication of being aware of the other’s presence, even as Leona clears his throat as he pushes the door shut behind him.

“S-,” he begins, only for Malleus to raise a lone pointer finger in the air and stop him midsentence. The general blinks in confusion, waiting a beat for further explanation as if expecting Malleus to share a major announcement. Were there intruders he sensed? Had the queen imparted upsetting news? Was the young prince falling ill?

“Oh~,” Malleus hums in amusement, his voice uncharacteristically soft and tender. The realization makes Leona frown, shifting on his feet as he gazes around the room. It’s decorated in the same gothic style that the rest of the castle shared with grotesques guarding along imposing pillars and candles the only source of light.

“Your-,” he tries again, though doesn’t get far as the prince speaks up once more.

“A moment,” Malleus instructs in a terse tone, not bothering to turn and face Leona as he keeps his back to him. Had Leona imagined the soft coo from earlier? The general remains silent for a second longer, only for Malleus to speak up once more. This time, his voice was once again soft and playful, like a parent speaking to their mischievous child. “You're such a little scoundrel demanding my attention like this, aren't you?~”

It’s only then that Leona huffs and begins to step closer to the dragon, wanting to see what the other was so engrossed in that he’d act up like this. His gaze goes from curious to flat the moment he spots a tiny gadget in Malleus’s hands. Not just any gadget though, but a tamagotchi that Leona had seen years ago when he was barely ten.

What the hell, he thinks to himself, watching painted nails press the tiny buttons as a pixelated black blob dances along the screen. It’s only then he becomes aware of the faint beeps and boops from it, ears twitching in annoyance.

“I’ll come back when you’re not busy then,” he mutters mostly to himself, his words going unheard by the dragon as the lion retreats. The moment he shuts the heavy door, he pinches the bridge of his nose, wishing he could somehow erase whatever scene he’d just witnessed.

Okay, maybe this isn’t a punishment, but it certainly feels like he’s being punked...

A fairly new gifmaker here. So, how do you add a single transparent pixel to a gif anyway? Is there some tutorial or guidelines about this? Honestly, i'm not against the concept of change but, whenever i slightly think i got it -the gifmaking, tumblr makes it all chaos and there's a new ordeal to consider ffs

i've been here for so long and have seen so many changes that i hated in the beginning, but they didn't really affect the gifs as negatively as this change seems to be doing. unless they can tweak the video format enough to where gifs looks like actual gifs again, i don't see how much longer this place is going to be around. gifmakers and content creators are truly the backbone of this website and they constantly do everything in their power to push us out. anyway, sorry for the mini rant.

i haven't found a tutorial but there might be one around somewhere, i'll update with a link if/when i find one! for now, i'll try my best to explain it the way i've been doing it.

EDIT: becca / @yenvengerberg created a great tutorial on how she’s able to do this! and it seems a lot simpler than my method, so give this a try. 

first, get your cropping, sharpening, colouring, etc. out of the way. make sure you're in frame animation if you're not already! i'm not sure what method you use to make your gifs, so lmk if i need to explain how to get to this point.

ok, so to make a single pixel, just click on your rectangular marquee tool

then make sure your first frame in your animation bar is selected as well as your first layer in the layers bar

after that, zoom in on your gif, i do about 500%, and find the whitest area if possible, then make your tiny square with your marquee tool. try to keep it small. like really small, your width and height shouldn't exceed 2px by 2px but if you can get it down to 1px by 1px, that's even better. there's a guide with the dimensions as you make the square, so you'll know where you're at. once you have your square selected (and it's very important you have your first frame and layer selected like i mentioned above or it won't work properly), you're going to hit the delete/backspace bar on your keyboard. it'll create a transparent pixel and voila! if you can't really see it, that's a good thing because it won't be noticeable on your gif once you've uploaded it. test upload it to your drafts first just to make sure it looks normal but you should be okay. hopefully st*ff doesn't catch on and change this but it does work for now.

i know i'm the worst at explaining so message me again if i need to clear something up for you.

Okay so because sleep deprivation and the Holiday season make an emotional little bish out of me, I decided to start the trend of writing a letter to your very first starter Pokémon. Mine was Squirtle, the letter is under the cut.

Dear Bubbles,

We had more in common right from the start than we thought. I had just stepped out of the water from earning my swimmer's certificate, when my parents handed me a GameBoy Advance with a copy of Pokémon Blue as a present. Of course I had seen you in the anime before. The year was 2005 and despite the first generation having been succeeded by then by countless games and merchandise, I was beyond overjoyed to start up the pixelated adventure that started it all.

Since your final evolution was the box art for the game you were, in my head, the main character of the game. So naturally I had to choose you. I gave you the name Bubbles because it is one of the moves you learn. Also, my English wasn't that top notch at the time, so my knowledge of good water-based nicknames that fit the language was limited. We set out on our journey, and despite my best efforts and enthusiasm, we got lost all the time. Mt Moon: Lost. Rock Tunnel: Lost. Rocket's Celadon City base: Lost. Saffron City Sliph Co.: Lost. Nevernonetheless, I had the time of my life. I didn't really have any friends back then, so I'd spent a lot of time indoors playing on my Game Boy. I barely had an idea what I was doing and gave you the worst moveset in the history of my gaming existence, but we kept winning, and you grew stronger and evolved along the way. Just you. The rest of the team consisted of a Pidgey, Nidoran(f), Nidoran(m), Rattata and Caterpie, but none of them made it past level 5. You were the main character. You and your Surf overworld sprite took me everywhere I needed to go. Until we got stuck.

Since my English wasn't as sophisticated, I had a hard time following instructions. With just two Gyms left to go, I had no idea where we should be heading or what to do to get to the seventh Badge. Somehow, it didn't bother me. I liked spending time with you. I kept aimlessly wandering around with you, battling wild Pokémon for fun and talking to NPCs at random. Time went by, and just like you evolved, I evolved. I eventually went on to other games. Newer games. Then I became a teenager and thought Pokémon was too embarassing to talk about with people the same age, so I tossed everything Pokémon related to the side. But I returned, and everything I learned on my journey through the outside world I took with me, including some language lessons. On a whim, I started up the GameBoy again. It stll worked. You were still there. Level 88. Six badges. The rest of the game had turned into a breeze. Your sprite entered the Hall of Fame. I've never felt more proud and accomplished....

... And then I deleted you. Of course, I've had many reincarnations of you over the years, but I'll always regret that decision. Even though You were never my favourite Pokémon species (Mewtwo has my heart in that regard). Even though there is no way to retreive the original you. You'll always hold a special place in my heart. You will forever be my first Pokémon and my favourite starter. 2005 is 18 years ago now, and still your influence can be found all around me.

And with that I truly mean all around me.

Though you may evolve. Though your sprite may change. Though your cry may be generated differently. To me, you'll always be that Tiny Turtle I got from Professor Oak the day I became a Pokémon trainer.

single is out now, wow.

my mom texted me a bit ago, just because, which is nice. in other news i finally put out the single i've been sitting on/trying to get right, and i got it right today, by adding a tiny bit to the left channel, and remixing the b side, which was very easy, now that i'm used to that process. like i said in the main post, the cover art had to be messed w/ to get it right for various platforms, the png was too big and all that stuff. when i make the next cover it needs to be at 3000x3000, which bites kind of, i like how much you can do w/ 5000x5000.

anyway, here is the image as it is as a jpg (actually png):

and there is the song, is it even possible to link to playlists on tumblr? also i can't even put anything abt this on instagram, how weird and annoying.

okay i got the insta thing to work (they too cannot handle the 5kx5k image and instead wanted it to be 50% the size (but they would not tell me that!!)). i wonder what i'm gonna do tomorrow, with music or cooking or anything really. i wanted to get this out because i want people to hear this if they come to me from that interview i did (lol), so they get a better idea of where i'm at musically i guess. this isn't really super representative of the whole record still though, but i like that. it's different angles on roughly the same kind of sound(s)/idea(s). i really like the ugly feedback stuff i added today.

all the weird hiccups i ran into today w/ cover art was really baffling, it's not like anyone is gonna notice this stuff really but i don't really like how it looks at 50% size because it makes some of the pixellations weird (i overuse dithering/indexed images in a weird way where they overlap and create new patterns (i hope)) this whole process fucking with the things i do, sort of. i don't think it's absent entirely it's just different/more disordered. if i focus on 3k x 3k and a pretty precise colorspace (that i need to figure out) then i think i'll be good. what i'm thinking of is doing 2 different 16 color palettes for 2 different sides of the collage / different pieces. so certain things can pop, i guess. anyways i guess sometime soon i should assemble the things i want to use for the cover art, and create at least the one thing i am certain on wanting for it (pink and black bull's eye thingy).

also i was able to get the image on sc to just be the jpg of the real cover, which is kind of crazy to me, but whatever.

regarding my life as i live it, nothing really happened, my gf dyed her hair blonde, which is funny, it's already blonde. she's been doing this a while but it makes me wonder, i guess, about how she likes it more blonde, more than natural. it looks good on her, it's just funny how i thought it was pretty bright normally, but apparently not bright enough, i wonder if it corresponds to how she imagines herself, i remember the first time, it was very crazy to her, it felt/looked perfect on her, it was sort of like she was meant to be that cartoonishly blonde, in like a 1970s anime kind of way.

and now i am just sat here eating pretzels to stave of cravings for sweets (trying to keep my mouth occupied i guess (i do that a lot)).

anyway i am tired, i ought to just turn in soon, soon:

Granblue Fantasy: Relink! since i have been a fan of granblue's chara design for a while, despite only tipping my toe in once upon a time ,:D i even own one of the art books! so definitely will try to get my hands on this when it comes!

Infinity Nikki! yup you read that right. it seems to be a nikki maker's attempt at a genshin-like game, and i'm. weirdly drawn in. we shall see if 1) it comes out in 2023 2) what reviews say before i can make promises but! crossing my fingers!

DokeV! another "may or may not come out in 2023" game but! haven't forgotten how charmed i was when i saw the trailer in -21 so! it basically looks pokemon x "relive your childhood via rose-colored glasses", which i am here for.

Tiny Glade! basically just "go nuts and make a cute enviroment". which is all i need sometimes, so def keeping an eye on it

Blue Protocol! amazon games' attempt at anime mmo. could be anything from a trash fire to good. and as someone who likes to poke at all the free trials for all the mmos; heck yeah we trying this one!

Rift of the NecroDancer! IT'S MORE NECRODANCER, DO I NEED TO SAY MORE!! (except that i'm not sure if it's gonna come out this year-)

Bits and Bops! another rhythm game that looks adore as heck. that's all. that's all it needs to be.

Witchbrook! another game that might not come out this year, but! BUT!! I CAN DREAM OKAY?! it's cute pixel game. where you go to magic school. and i need it in my hands ASAP.

The Plucky Squire! was charmed at first glance! it's a tiny hero's journey through all sorts of things on a child's table, from books to mugs and beyond!

Exhausted Man! a spaghetti-like man, trying to get through his day while tired. it looks cute, and i relate to it too much.

Spirit Swap! i have too many hours on bejeweled 3, so of course cute as heck game with match-3 and good music is gotta be on my list!!!

Hello, loves! 

I have decided to share an action set I’ve made dedicated to blurring out captions and graphics in gifs with just one click. It’s very straight forward and includes a very short list of steps, but if I can help cut out a tiny fraction of the time creators take to make wonderful gifs, then I’m more than happy to do so. This process can feel very repetitive, so why not compile all the steps into an action and call it a day?

Requires: 

Basic gif making knowledge

Photoshop version with animation timeline

Below the cut is a thorough walk through of the action set and how to use it. I will explain the effects I included in the action and why, as well as some example images to follow if this process is something you’re new to! While I wouldn’t consider this post a full tutorial on how to blur captions manually (because there are plenty of those), I hope it’s still detailed enough that you find it helpful and purposeful enough to warrant downloading the action to save you some time! 

Of course, this is something a lot of gifmakers can do step-by-step in their sleep by now (and probably already have actions of their own method), but we all start out somewhere and I wanted to gift a little something to the newer creators who are still finding their footing in gif making and find this process as tedious (and admittedly confusing sometimes) as the rest of us. 

However, I want to make it clear that blurring captions is absolutely not required for your gifs to still be amazing! Please do not feel pressured to go through the trouble if it’s not something you want to do. It’s entirely a creative choice.

WHAT THIS ACTION SET INCLUDES:

Four very simple actions for blurring captions or graphics in gifs with just one click.

The action titled “normal blur” applies a modest amount of blur.

The action titled “more blur” applies a slightly greater amount of blur.

Two identical copies of the above actions, but without feathering.

WHAT THESE ACTIONS DO: 

Adds 3 pixels of feathering around your selection. This will soften the edges of your blur instead of making it look like a harsh box around the caption or graphic. If you prefer to skip this first step, just use one of the actions I included without it.

Adds a layer mask.

Re-selects your layer thumbnail.

Adds a radius of 3.0 pixels (normal blur) or 5.0 pixels (more blur) of Gaussian Blur to your layer depending on your preference. You can simply edit the smart filter to your liking if you prefer a different strength entirely.

Re-selects your layer mask so you can immediately make adjustments with a black or white paint brush if needed.

HOW TO INSTALL THE ACTION:

If your actions palette isn’t already open in photoshop, you can find it by going to Window > Actions. Download the action and open it in photoshop by going to File > Open and locating the .atn file from wherever you saved it. It should immediately show up in your actions palette.

HOW TO USE THE ACTION:

You’re gonna start off by making your gif as you usually do. Crop, resize, convert to smart object, and apply all your sharpen settings until your gif is to your liking. If you use Topaz Clean on your gifs, I recommend adding it after you run the action just to save time.

For the sake of this post, I colored my example so you can see how the finished result will look right away, but normally you should be doing all of these steps before you color your gif.

BASE GIF WITHOUT BLUR: 

Now you’re ready to start blurring the caption, except there are a few quick (but crucial) steps you need to do first in order for the action to work properly! If the action runs into any errors, it’ll definitely have something to do with not doing one of these steps, so be careful.

Ready? Okay, here we go...

4 THINGS YOU NEED TO DO BEFORE RUNNING THE ACTION:

1. Duplicate your base layer. 2. Right click on the Smart Filters mask on your copied layer and select “Clear Smart Filters”.

This will revert the layer back to normal and give you a clean layer to work with. Technically, this step is optional, but you really don’t need any of your smart filters listed on this layer since the action is going to add a layer mask around your selection that will show these settings on the layer underneath, so they’re not necessary on your copy. Your sharpened gif will reappear after you run the action, don’t worry!

3. If need be, trim your copy on the animation timeline to the very beginning/end of where your caption appears in the gif. Use the left and right arrows on your keyboard to pan the red time indicator through the frames to locate the exact first and/or last frame(s) that your caption or graphic appears. Click and drag the edge of the layer after the red line (or before if you’re trimming the other end). This step will ensure that the blur ONLY appears atop the frames where the caption is visible, assuming the gif has some frames where the caption doesn’t appear like our example. If the caption is visible throughout the entire gif, of course you won’t need to do this step at all.

My animation timeline looks like this now:

But wait! What if your gif has two captions, but they each appear at a different time in the gif, one after the other? Then you’re gonna repeat steps 1 (drag the new copy to the top) and 2. So you might end up with three or more layers on the timeline depending on how many captions keep appearing during the gif with varying durations. Just trim each copied layer down to only show the caption that specific layer will be responsible for blurring. In that case, you’ll make your selections one at a time before running the action on each layer, respectively. I really hope that makes sense. It sounds like a lot, but it’s easy.

4. Make your selection! With your copied layer still highlighted, use the Rectangular Marquee Tool to make a selection box around the caption or graphic you want to blur. For a more custom or accurate selection, you can even use the Polygonal Lasso Tool, but that’s up to you. As long as you end up with those dancing ants around the caption like so:

TIP: Make the selection a few extra pixels bigger than the caption itself. This will leave some extra room for the feathering. Like I mentioned above, this effect will make the blur look less harsh around the edges and appear more seamless. 

Now that you’ve duplicated your base gif layer, cleared the smart filters, possibly trimmed it down, and made a selection, it’s time to use an action! 

I’m gonna use the normal blur action for this.

PLAY THE ACTION

Select your action of choice and press the play button.

Blink and you miss it, but boom. Blurred. 

Your layers should immediately look something like this:

Right away, you might notice a few things...

Firstly, your gif looks sharp again and your caption is now blurred. Go ahead and click on the Gaussian Blur smart filter and adjust the amount of blur if you’re not satisfied. I chose 3.0 pixels because it’s my go-to setting, but if you prefer something else, just change it. You can even edit that step within the action itself so you won’t have to do it every time! I won’t be offended.

Secondly, if you see that the feathering is still making some of caption show around edges, you didn’t do anything wrong. It just means the selection didn’t have enough extra pixels around the caption to blur them. Don’t worry about going back and repeating any steps from scratch. This is where some fine tuning comes in!

The action has your layer mask selected right now, so all you have to do is grab your paint brush tool and set it to the color white with a very low hardness. Go ahead and zoom your gif in a bit so you can see closer and paint over any edges that are still visible. If the caption is particularly animated like in our example (sometimes those little guys like to wiggle), pan through each frame and make sure no sneaky pixels of the caption pop through in any of the frames. 

If you think your selection was too big and the blur takes up too much space (it’s better to be safe than sorry), simply switch your brush to black and use it to erase the blur where it isn’t necessary. 

Hopefully, you’ll be left with something like this!

FINAL GIF WITH BLUR:

From there, you can select your base layer again and add your Topaz settings or any extra things you need to do and continue with the rest of your gif process. Convert to frames, set your speed, color your gif as usual, and save.

YOU’RE DONE!

Except.

WAIT AGAIN! What if your gif has multiple captions in different places, but their duration is the same throughout the whole gif? Can you make multiple selections on your copied layer instead of going through that whole duplicating hassle I mentioned above if they were to appear at different times? 

Yes, of course.

BASE GIF WITH MULTIPLE CAPTIONS:

Do all the above steps as usual. When you select your preferred Marquee Tool, make sure you also have the “Add to Selection” box at the top chosen as well.

You can then make a selection around as many captions as you need on the same layer.

Run the action. I used the more blur action on this example.

FINAL GIF WITH BLUR:

I know! You’re welcome. I really hope you find this action useful. I know it’s extremely simple, but I remember finding this whole process so daunting when I learned how to do it and I know I’m not the only one. Practice makes perfect, so I figured it was finally time someone bit the bullet and did the work for you instead of writing up another lengthy tutorial of how to do each step manually. I’ve talked to several people who still couldn’t figure out what they were doing wrong.
