so in the girl in the green silk gown, Emma is a beàn sidhe. while we havent ever seen one (afaik) in the toby daye series, it made me think about how it could be possible for the fay to exist in the incryptid world and be classified loosely as cryptids to the price family, and how maybe some of the wars toby talks about before the fay started hiding from humans could be the Covenant and their war on cryptids. and over in san francisco toby is just too busy to stop the world from collapsing to notice that her bank teller or whatever is actually a gorgon (i hope this makes sense i don’t reread things)

If you are looking for a creepy ghost story based ON a ghost story that mixes the afterlife, folklore from many different cultures, and a very funny, sardonic, and brave heroine, you will like Sparrow Hill Road.
Have you heard the ghost story about a young girl hitchhiking on a lonely road, and when she's picked up, the driver loans her a coat or a jacket? And then she disappears, and he finds the jacket on her headstone or somewhere weird? That's the story that Rose is based on.
This was the book I discovered in the May 2014 Romantic Times Rewind that I most wanted to read, and it was excellent.

Hey could I have a Kili x Reader where the reader is someone Gandalf recruited early on the adventure. She spends all her time in the woods and can even converse with animals as well as being an adept hunter and survivalist? Kili just becomes infatuated then and there
Hello!! I'm so sorry this took so long to complete, but I hope you enjoy:
“I thought you said you had another person attending, Gandalf, your apprentice?” Thorin’s words floated above the murmur of the company members as they feasted on poor Bilbo’s pantry.
“I do, however, unfortunately, they were caught up in other matters. Do not fret, Thorin, they will meet us along the way.”
“What matters were so important to have missed a vital meeting before we set off on this journey?” Thorin’s tone was criticizing as he imagined a young lad trying to drink himself into a stupor-
“Medical ones,” Gandalf’s cheery disposition turned into a frown as he gazed upon the dwarf.
“They are providing medical guidance for a town riddled with disease. I say a sobbing child with a fever needs their attention more than a group of rowdy, but otherwise healthy, dwarves.”
“My apologies,” Thorin tilted his head to Gandalf who responded in kind.
“I know you are anxious to meet the final member of your Company, Thorin, trust me when I say everything will fall together- in due time.”
And that was the last they discussed the missing apprentice, your absence not being brought up again.
The next morning, after a night of feasting and somber singing, the Company set out on their journey.
The trees were lush and soon the rolling hills of the Shire had all but disappeared behind the horizon. Coin was shared upon the arrival of Bilbo, but the final member of the Company had still yet to arrive.
“Gandalf,” Thorin addressed as he fell to the middle of the line where Gandalf was atop of his horse.
“Do you know when your apprentice will be arriving?”
“I would say–”
“Right now,” You called out, popping up next to Gandalf as you stared at the bird in your hand. It was a small old-world sparrow, happily chirping as you nodded.
“You are-” Kili almost interrupted, the Company now halted as they stared at you awaiting introduction.
“One moment,” You held up a finger, keeping your gaze trained on the bird, pausing in your steps.
“Thank you,” You said after a moment, smiling at the small creature. You watched as the bird then took off, flying into the trees.
“You’re Gandalf’s apprentice?” Balin tried this time, your gaze returning to the Company.
“Yes, I am,” You bowed your head, “My name is (Y/n),” You greeted, your grin widening as each dwarf gave their name.
“And you?” You stared at Kili who seemed to be starstruck, eyes wide and round as the wind shifted the leaves of the trees, making the sunlight highlight different areas of your face. Dipped in golden light.
Fili chuckled, turning into a cough as Kili elbowed him harshly in the gut. “Kili, at your service,” he bowed his head.
“It’s a pleasure to meet all of you,” You turned to Gandalf, “There may be trouble along the old road,” You explained, “The sparrows have seen trolls taking livestock from farmers, they recommend to stay away.”
“Sparrows?” Bilbo questioned and before you could explain, Gandalf was quick to boast.
“(Y/n) holds many abilities, but one of them is animal conversing, birds are her favorite.”
“They know so much,” You shrugged, as the company resumed traveling. Walking alongside Gandalf, you failed to notice the eyes trained on your form and drinking in your appearance.
“Also, they say the population of rabbits has increased, especially towards the winding trees further north, we’re likely to be able to catch a few for supper come time to set up camp,” You were already planning your hunt in your head.
Kili felt like he was going to swoon. He was most certainly in deep, and you’ve only said a few sentences.

what are some of your favorite pieces of literature
Like classic literature?
Carmilla, The Phantom of the Opera, Wuthering Heights, the Count of Monte Cristo, almost any Shirley Jackson, Beloved, Pride and Prejudice (I know; I'm basic in my Jane Austen fave), The Turn of the Screw, many ShakespearesTM, Count Partinuples, A Little Princess...there are more, but those are the first that come to mind
if you mean books in general, Carmilla is still top of the list. I really enjoy the October Daye and Sparrow Hill Road series by Seanan McGuire, the Discworld series, the Physick World series, Mercedes Lackey's Elemental Masters series, Just Like Home by Sarah Gailey, a lot of late 90s-early 00s middle grade or YA ghost books, Holly Black's Modern Tales of Faerie series, Girls of Paper and Fire (still need to read the sequels), and again, many others

Hello, I just wanted to tell you that your books have meant the world to me for a long time. I reserve your books at the library before they come out just so I can be the first to read them. The only flaw in this plan is that then I am parched for more of your books. For that I am grateful that you are so prolific (i could never.) October Daye is one of my favorite ever heroines ever since I first read Rosemary and Rue, and her growth has been incredible to see. My favorite girl though is Rose from Sparrow Hill Road, which I used to reread over and over. Your worldbuilding is always so immersive as well! <3
Anyway thank you so very much. I hope to someday meet you in person although Im not sure if you'd be able to sign every one of my Toby novels. Maybe one?
...I have written so many books that the idea of someone being parched is slightly terrifying, and makes me respect and fear you.
If I'm ever doing a signing near you, I'd be happy to sign your books! It's usually three at a time, then end of the line (if there is a line), but otherwise I don't limit signatures; I did this to myself, after all.

Throwback Thursday Sunday
@starsuncounted & @jomiddlemarch tagged me to share an oldie but goodie—thank you!
The rule is to share a fic older than a week, and 2021 was over a week ago, so: Suffer a Sea Change (PotC, one-sided Norrington/Elizabeth, Norrington & Jack, Elizabeth & Jack, ~5000 words), which features musing on matrimonial discontent, magnetic anomalies, and at least one extremely obvious metaphor - all on the voyage to the Isla de Muerta. I'm not usually proud of my fic, but!
“It’s what it does. Sold five years’ worth of dreams and a piece of Ponce de León’s map of the road to Bimini to a powerful witch for the damn thing,” Sparrow said, “A bargain, really; dreamless sleep’s a blessing when you get where I’ve got.” “Your broken compass is – you expect me to believe your compass is enchanted?" “I don’t expect it. Curious if you will believe it, though.” “I don’t,” said Norrington, who was starting to feel ridiculous for even having this conversation out loud. “Ah. How dull. And I suppose you believe Charleton, that the Morgana of the Messina Strait is just the crystal bits and bobs of the sand and antimony in the Sicilian hills, and that hot sun of the Med making the sky a mirror?” “A more likely explanation than a fairy queen of England conjuring Palladian cities off Sicily,” Norrington shot back. Sparrow, irksome as ever, merely shrugged. “The compass points to the Pearl because I want it to, Commodore. Simple as that.”
Tagging: @johnbly, @enchi-elm, @shoshiwrites, @mercurygray, @teamtadpole, @admiraleyk, @foolishpsychopomp, @itsalongwaytotipperary, and you, tumblr denizen reading this!

There is a place near where I live. Once, men with Money sought to make more, and began Developing the land.
They hired other men to kill the trees and the bushes and the grasses. They evicted the things that flew and hopped and crawled through those leaves and branches. They broke the earth and filled in the rills and flattened the hills.
Then, far away, the Great Wall Street Cult of the Squiggly Line decreed that the Money belonged to new people, and the Development stopped. They put a low earthen wall around the scar, and put up signs that say “no trespassing” and “no dumping.” The signs and the wall are equally effective.
Nature has put in work to reclaim the land. The water has carved a new path. There are plants. This time of year, in this part of the world, the plants are brown, seemingly dead, their life hidden in their roots or their seeds as they wait for Rain. Rabbits can be seen sometimes.
Sadly, so many have not returned. Poppy cannot pop her seeds across roads and strip malls. Wilakal assumes an animal will brush by to disperse her. Squirrel cannot plant Oak if Oak is many miles away. Until Bluestem comes back, Finch and Sparrow will not bring Lupine. Only those carried by wind, Mustard and Dandelion and Bitter Lettuce, have found their way here.
I remember that I have good feet and good hands and good eyes. I walk, just before dawn, pupils cat-wide to drink the moonlight. My hands dance; a bag of seeds in one, the other hand grabs and flings and sprinkles. Seeds float and fling, rattle and rustle. My feet dance as well; short stomps and slides that kick up dirt, spread it, bury the seeds.
I thank the land; for the space and the stone, for the soil and the silt. For Life. I apologize for my fellow Humans; they know not what they do; I am sorry, so, so sorry. I brought Gifts; I brought flowers. I brought your flowers! I know you missed them. I brought as many as I could. Please, Have them all, they are yours.
I brought Poppy and Lupine and Sage, see? Coreopsis and Rudbeckia and Pentstemon are here too! I brought Grama and Bluestem! Please! Take it! Take it all! It is for you! Bluebell and Phacelia! Gaillardia and Sunflower! Please!
Please
Come back
Come back to Life
A Man cries, and dances, and seeds fall from his hands in a million teardrops of hope, a prayer made manifest in a million grains of Life. Maybe they will not sprout. Maybe it will not Change Anything. But A Man must Try.
The Birds, woken by the glow of the sun rising to the east, watch warily. They sing to each other, discuss the Man in their midst and the Food he throws away freely. They will Help. They will carry the seeds inside their bodies to other places. In return they will be nourished. It is good.
The Man smiles. The sun is up. He has Tried. Maybe, in the spring, the flowers will return. Maybe there will be places to live for the things that crawl and fly and hop.
Maybe.
It certainly feels good to Try.

God’s Country
Heaven shines over Dayton, Ohio
These plumes of light, floating in
Limbo, a delicate graze of eventide,
A magic cast from the belief in magic.
This is God’s country, and don’t you
Forget it, wherever it casts you -
The long, winding roads between
Forests, plains, hills and empty
Solitude, or the shimmering Ohio
Illuminated by an ageless youth
That dresses up in lavish gowns,
Sharp suits and clean corvettes.
Those kids think themselves more
Than the sunset itself, where mauve
Folds into orange folding into a blue
Deeper than anyone’s ability to swim.
And they’ll forget their age, pretending
In unison that their dreaming is real.
And maybe it is, but they wouldn’t know.
The land itself would, but only after they,
In all their brilliance, have returned to
The shade beneath the oaks
For a rest without end.
Observations conducted between Dayton, Ohio and Paducah, Kentucky over the course of May 2024 with EBM. Aged 28.

"but dying isn't hard" (...young man, living is harder. sorry, I had to) for the ask game
GOD. OKAY TALK ABOUT A FIC THAT IS 100% AUDIENCE OF ONLY ME.
This is a Sparrow Hill Road/Bleach crossover and to make matters worse, it's told from the perspective of the character from the LESS well-known fandom. It is ultimately me looking at the highly specific ghost lore in SHR and the highly specific ghost lore in Bleach and going okay well what if the reason why Soul Society is Like That is because it's ONLY Japanese ghosts, because they don't have the ghost roads that America has.
If you're unfamiliar with both, it's three psychopomps from different walks of life trying to solve a mystery that concerns both of their individual afterlives and the culture clash that comes from having RADICALLY different styles of dealing with wayward evil dead.
It's on pause because I haven't read the third book yet even if this is set between the second and third book. I need to refresh myself on Rose's... everything.
And I've written like a bunch of words of an opening for it, so here's something:
Apple called and the Ocean Lady rose to meet her. Such was Rose’s life. The second she arrived in the Queen’s domain, however, everything felt strange and tense, like the ozone after a lightning strike or the building pressure before a tornado touched down. There were routewitches gathered all around the diner, looking uncomfortable and Rose eased Gary into neutral in case what happened last time happened again as she crossed into the lot. His radio played “Bad Moon Rising” and she patted his dash reassuringly. It was a false platitude. Something was wrong and she knew it. Of course Gary knew it, too. You didn’t need experience with the ghost roads or a routewitch’s magic to know that much. She worried her bottom lip with her teeth as she considered whether this was about Bobby Cross, but then dismissed the thought. There was no way with her luck that Apple would have found out anything before her. Bobby didn’t show his hand like that, especially not after his disastrous best laid plans last time- thank, Persephone. Literally. In the end, she had to leave Gary outside. He was spooked. She was spooked. The routewitches were spooked. Maybe he didn’t want her to go alone, but she wasn’t ready for him to face something that could make the Ocean Lady tremble. There’s very few things older and scarier than her and barely any of them exist on this continent.  So that was worrisome.
WIP RAMBLE GAME.

'The Boy with the Blue Hair' Hilda fic form 2019
First I wrote this 5 Years ago?? I Believe.
Second I was so much into the idea that Hilda might be a witch (I WAS SO WRONG) LMAO
And 3rd enjoy (ican't tell you there are no typos) lmao 🤣
Rain fall on the roof of the house. Hilda a 12 year old with blue hair laid on the couch. She looked up at the ceiling then over at Twing who played looking up at her. "Mum is it ever going to stop raining".
The woman laughed. She stood in the kitchen making hot cocoa.
"Hilda it will".
The girl sighed. Hilda sat up and looked at her Mother "Mum can I ask you something"?
"Yes Hilda".
"How did you met dad".
Johanna picked up the cups and walked over to her daughter and sat down next to her. And handed her a cup
"Your dad he was an amazing man and he loved you a lot and how I met him well we will have to go a long ways back".
A young girl with brown hair walks out of the house that laid on a hill overlooking the city. She wore a sparrow scout uniform on the sash of the unifor many badges lay. She walked alone alone the road she know to get her next patch she would have to leave the city without anyone knowing. "I have to found a super rare flower for this", The young girl said.
She soon come to the gate of the city she looked around seeing guards there checking cars. She used the cars to her advices to get out of the city. As soon as she got out into the forest she could only see trees and animals she had only heard of deers and many others. She keep going in she looked around to where she saw a group if flowers she want and looked at. She grabbed some that looked awesome and put them into her bag. But she looked up at the sky growing dark. "How long was I out here".
But as she moved something moved with her. A blue haired boy in the trees.
He looked at her never seeing a human girl before. But to him she was a beauty.
As the girl walked back to the city the sun had set. "No",she said.
As she ran rocks become trolls and they chased her.
The boy jumped down from the tree and used a spell to change himself into a troll and run at them. The girl had tripped and fall and watched as the came out her." I am sorry I came out here".
But before her eyes the one troll took out the others. Leaving the girl unable to move. One trolls left standing looked down at the girl and before her eyes became the boy again.
"Are you ok"?
"Ye.....ye.......yes".
He held his hand out and she took it and he pulled her up.
"My name is Johanna and thanks for saving me".
"Your welcome Johana".
She looked at the blue haired boy.
"Here I will take you back to the city".
She smiled when he took her hand. She thought he was cute.
1 year later.
Johanna remembered the boy who saved her he would come almost everyday to the house yet she had never said a word about liking him. He did the same.
Johanna waited at the window where the boy would cast his way up to her. And soon he did.
"Johanna how was you day of school".

"Some as normal found out a new cave I going to expire tomorrow".
Johanna looked at the boy.
"There is something I want to tell you".
"Yes Johanna".

His face bacome red.
She looked away.
"Johanna I love you to".
She turned around just to be pulled into her first kiss.
The blue hair boy and Johanna kissed and thr blue haired boy pulled her into a hug. "Johanna I have always loved you".
4 years later.

She looked out and smiled and opened it.
"Come with me Johanna".
"Mother and father doesn't".
"I know but we can live in my grandfather's house in the woods and be together there".
"Hold on",she said.
She grabbed at bag amd put stuff she would need and looked at the house one more time. "Bye mother and father". And she waved. She walked over to the window and looked down. The blue haired boy said a spell amd he flow up to her. He took her in his arms and flow off.
"I am sorry we never got to have a big wedding Johanna".

"The baby is coming,"Johanna said.
"What"?
"The baby"! She stood up and the Blue Haired Boy she loved helped her up the stairs and into there room. He helped her onto the bed.
"Hold on Johanna".
He grabbed her hand "I am here".
19 Minutes Later
The baby was there a girl a blue haired girl.

"I know but she has your eyes".
"Hilda" said the man now father.
"Hilda I like it".
He kissed his wife and she rested her head into his chest. He looked down to see his two girls.
And he was happy to have them.
1 year later
The man walked to the house a saddened look on his face.He pushed the door open and come into. There sat his wife and baby. "Honey",Johanna said.
"Yes".
"Glad to have you home".
She stood up with Hilda jn her arms. The baby looked around at everything taking it all in. "My sweet baby Hilda", said the man.
He took her form Johanna and held her.
"Johanna".
"Yes", she said as she walked to the kitchen.
"I have to leave and I don't know if or when I come home".
She stopped everything.
"Leave".
"Yes".
Tears fell form her face.
He stood up and walked over Hilda looking at her mother. With his one free arm he took her in.
"I know but I have to things have to be atopped and only I can".
"I know but loseing you".
"You have Hilda look she like me in many ways blue hair, her snice of adventure she has it all".
She smiled "I love you".
Back to now.
"Your father left the next day and for 11 years now I hoped he would found us and come home but nothing".
Hilda head rested on her mum's lap. "Mum don't lose faith he will".
"Thanks Hilda".
"Beside Dad sound like he was a cool man".
"He was".
"He had powers".
"Yes and you might too".
"Powers"?
"Yes".
Hilda sat up and hugged her mum.
'Thanks for telling me about dad now I am going to see if I have powers".
She got up and ran of to her room.
Johanna loughed at her.
"Honey she is so much like you.

The Warm and the Cold by Ted Hughes Freezing dusk is closing    Like a slow trap of steel On trees and roads and hills and all    That can no longer feel.        But the carp is in its depth          Like a planet in its heaven.        And the badger in its bedding          Like a loaf in the oven.        And the butterfly in its mummy          Like a viol in its case.        And the owl in its feathers          Like a doll in its lace.
Freezing dusk has tightened    Like a nut screwed tight On the starry aeroplane    Of the soaring night.        But the trout is in its hole          Like a chuckle in a sleeper.        The hare strays down the highway          Like a root going deeper.        The snail is dry in the outhouse          Like a seed in a sunflower.        The owl is pale on the gatepost          Like a clock on its tower.
Moonlight freezes the shaggy world    Like a mammoth of ice - The past and the future    Are the jaws of a steel vice.        But the cod is in the tide-rip          Like a key in a purse.        The deer are on the bare-blown hill          Like smiles on a nurse.        The flies are behind the plaster          Like the lost score of a jig.        Sparrows are in the ivy-clump          Like money in a pig.
Such a frost    The flimsy moon        Has lost her wits.
         A star falls.
The sweating farmers    Turn in their sleep        Like oxen on spits.
