My first week of the Summer Reading Challenge 2.0 and we have two books down!
Childhood favourite: The Butterfly Lion by Michael Morpurgo
Under 300 pages: Starling Days by Rowan Hisayo Buchanan
I started with Starling Days since I had grabbed that from the library last week. It’s a good book. I gave it 3.5 stars because I really loved the writing and even the story, but at times I wished it had been and done more. But still an amazing read. The Butterfly Lion was a quick one to finish and an instant 5 stars. It was one of the first books I fell in love with when I was little and it was lovely going back to it, especially reading from the same copy I first read the story in. Despite knowing what happens, I still cried twice at the sweet story. I know it’s a childrens book but I definitely recommend it if you’re looking for a quick read. While I’m here a little update on writing. I managed to reach 40,000 words, but steam has died down since hitting the mile stone. I’m hoping to get back on it.
Talking about getting back on it, the next book will be Me vs Brain for the first spot on the Challenge list.
I hope everyone’s week has been lovely and happy reading. ☀️📖

The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien
I have read this book multiple times, actually I had just reread this last year (and I don't think I did a proper review post at the time). This is one of my top comfort books, I will never grow tired of it. To me it's the book equivalent to a cup of hot tea and a blanket when you most need it. I was at the verge of a reading slump, and in general I just needed that comfort feeling this book gives me, so I picked it up yet again.
At this point everyone more or less knows the plot of The Hobbit, it's the adventure of Bilbo Baggins, a hobbit hired as a burglar by Thorin Oakenshield and his company of Dwarves. The goal is to got at east to The Lonely Mountain, where Thorin's grandfather was king before the dragon Smaug attacked them. It's a very simple adventure that feels almost like a fairytale. It's such a cozy and engaging read, it's much more lighthearted and easy to read than The Lord Of The Rings, so give it a chance if you haven't yet. It's not as easy to explain why this story is so comforting to me, other than the cozy vibes it gives me, Bilbo gives me so much hope. He's a character I am very attached to, because I cannot help but to seem myself in him. He's just a quiet hobbit who enjoys the comfort of his house, to sit in his garden, eat and read a book. And yet, although a part of him fears adventure and unpredictability, he choses to follow is Took side and go on this adventure. What I also really like about his character is that throughout the whole novel Bilbo has this emotional ups and downs. He doesn't change in his character, he still misses his home and its comforts, even if he grows as a person. He realizes he is much more brave that he could ever think, he finds himself dealing with things he would have never imagined. Bilbo always makes me feel more confident as a person when reading this book. I am just ranting at this point, but I love this book so much, and it's so approachable, even as a fantasy book, so I can't believe some people have never read this.
I decided to use this reread for the studyblr w/ knives summer reading challenge 2.0 for the prompt magical quest. (I have posted an update recently, so I'll wait to have read a couple more books for the next one).

i finally finished the summer reading challenge 2.0! wow, this is a whole 2.5 months earlier than last year askdf. some thoughts on each book i read since the last update post are under the cut :)
original post for the challenge || my storygraph (tell me if you add me so i know to add you back!)
adapted for tv or a movie
the queen’s gambit - walter tevis
since i watched the series and it is (surprisingly) close to the book, there wasn’t much that was new here for me. still, very solid reading choice, in my opinion lmao, would definitely recommend either reading this or watching the series, it’s very impressive.
over 400 pages
king of scars - leigh bardugo
i missed the universe a lot! kinda surprisingly, but also very much not lmao. especially the ending left me with goose bumps and Emotions so i can’t wait to have the time for rule of wolves!! [edit from later: i absolutely loved row :’)]
childhood favourite
the magician’s nephew - c. s. lewis
i only ever watched the movies as a kid/teenager, but i wanted to use this prompt as an excuse to actually read one of the books they are based on. it’s been.. underwhelming? in a way, i think i expected something different from the book but i don’t even know how to properly describe it.
antihero or chosen one
carry on - rainbow rowell
started out great and then it got kind of... idk, too ya? too chosen one? yeah, that's about it. but it was very light-hearted, and i really enjoyed that.
heist or magical quest
an absolutely remarkable thing - hank green
this book was a lot of fun and also w i l d. really impressive to see the entire social media movement as it was written (also scary but pssh). what it also accomplished was getting me more interested in looking into speculative fiction at some point soon again - it just seems like so many possibilities and so much fun!
novella or graphic novel
this winter - alice oseman
!! and :)) is literally all i can say. i kid you not, that are the only two things i wrote down after i read it lol
by an lgbtq+ author
solitaire - alice oseman
i now get what people mean by "you can tell it's her first published book". i can't put anything specific to it, but it seems kinda hectic and also unclear at some points, i guess? also, how is the school burning down not at all a plot point or even mentioned in heartstopper? at least i think it isn’t? anyway.
on your tbr for over a year
nick and charlie - alice oseman
so damn cute. very realistic. however, could they just fucking communicate? poor charlie, poor nick, but the pictures? omG
main character of colour
radio silence - alice oseman
so good. you really notice how alice grew as a writer since solitaire, and the plot was a lot more interesting to me as well. the characters are so much more fleshed out and it's such a joy following them and seeing the dynamic between frances and aled specifically, even though aled has such a hard time towards the end
author of your nationality
der steppenwolf - hermann hesse
what even was this book? i wouldn't know. however, i think i should stop reading classics that i’m not 100% interested in
by an author of colour
the hate u give - angie thomas
a very insightful, very shocking book, but i would guess a rather accurate insight into life as a POC in the US. the book left such an impression on me, i still don’t really know how to put it in words.
released the year you were born
blueprint - charlotte kerner
this is a book i wanted to reread for a while now. i read it in school about 10 years ago and remembered it had a lot of things to say about individuality and ethics. it did as i expected on a reread, but in my eyes it’s a pretty average book. not very catching so no surprise they made us read it in school /j

Summer Reading Challenge 2.0 - this has got to be my personal favourite prompt. i'm a sucker for a good heist story ☀︎
Tumblr media
Portrait of a Thief by Grace D. Li
Harvard art history student Will Chen is offered a job: 50 million dollars if he succeeds in bringing five priceless sculptures from prestigious museums in Europe and the US back to where they were originally stolen from - the Old Summer Palace in China. Together with his sister, a getaway driver, a hacker, and the son of an FBI investigator, he plans to return the artwork to where it belongs. An Ocean’s Eleven-esque story discussing perspectives on Chinese American identity and the aftermath of colonialism. (blurb by @dreamofghosts)
An Absolutely Remarkable Thing by Hank Green
Looking for something exciting, the next remarkable thing, April May stumbles into a world of fame, conspiracy and mystery when she goes viral as first contact between humans and the (possibly alien) Carls. The robot-like solid statues suddenly appear in 12 places across the globe and leave the world community with two pressing questions: Who are they? What do they want? If you like Hank Green’s content, the Green brothers’ podcast, AI and urban sci-fi or internet shenanigans you’re gonna love this. I read this in one night. The category is: I wish I could read this for the first time again. (blurb by @bennistudies)

Summer Reading Challenge 2.0 - time to diversify your reads by picking up a book by a queer author ☀︎
Tumblr media
Iron Widow by Xiran Jay Zhao
Pitched as Dragonball meets furry Pacific Rim, Iron Widow is a genius sci-fi book set in an anachronistic Chinese culture that follows Wu Zetian, whose only wish is to avenge her sister’s sacrifice in a patriarchal militaristic state. This has: epic battles, a badass female protagonist, lgbtq+ characters, and a true love triangle (not a love corner). (blurb by @upside-down-uni)
Honey Girl by Morgan Rogers
What Grace went to Las Vegas for: Partying after she finally got her PhD in astronomy. What she didn’t go to Las Vegas for: getting married to a beautiful stranger that makes her question everything and turns her world upside down. Honey Girl is about getting married and falling in love afterwards, letting go of some things and finally taking other things in hand, loving your friends so much it hurts and late night podcasts about magic that are maybe less about magic than about humans. This has: a main character and love interest of colour, found family, and the trials and tribulations of Adulting. (blurb by @upside-down-uni)

Summer Reading Challenge 2.0 - summer is the season for epic stories; will you choose a steadfast chosen one or a bold antihero? ☀︎
Tumblr media
A Darker Shade of Magic by V. E. Schwab
Four parallel Londons threatened by disease, a diplomat turned outlaw and a thief with dreams larger than life. A surprising deal and a quest with one key objective: stay alive. Almost the last of his kind, Kell is the Red London ambassador and travels as messenger between his home (where magic thrives), White London (where magic starves), and Grey London (where magic is long forgotten). His side hustle: smuggling magical artefacts from one to another, for anyone willing to pay the right price. When a job goes awry, he runs into Lila, a devious pickpocket with ambition, who somehow - impossibly - manages to follow him back to Red London. A deal is struck, an alliance formed, and secrets begin to unravel; all the while a perilous force threatens to take over. A masterfully crafted, vivid narrative of an interdimensional quest with magic at stake and lives on the line. (blurb by @bulletnotestudies and @hannistudies)
The Wee Free Men by Terry Pratchett
Sometimes all it takes to be a witch is determination and bravery - and a good swing with an old pan. When her younger brother goes missing, Tiffany embarks on a mission to bring him back from the land of the Queen of Elves. She learns about her bewitching abilities and how to see what others cannot. Her sidekicks: a bunch of Nac Mac Feegles, tiny men who like wearing kilts, swearing and giving someone a good kick with their boot - if no one’s around, even themselves. (blurb by @hannistudies)

hello! would it be okay to tweak the challenge a little? for example, because i don’t put my age on the internet for safety and privacy, i’m not comfortable publicizing the year i was born, so for that challenge would it be okay to pick a book published during the month or the day instead? thank you so much for doing these challenges<3
absolutely!

The Summer Reading Challenge 2.0 catch up! Three more books done.
Released in the last six months: Me VS Brain by Hayley Morris
By an author of colour: The Kiss Quotient by Helen Hoang
Anti-hero or chosen one: The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde
It’s been a long two weeks and I’ve been slow with my reading. Though I really enjoyed all the books. Me VS Brain was a mixture of super funny and a little sad, which made it perfect. The Kiss Quotient wasn’t at all what I expected but in the best way. It had me hooked and if it wasn’t for work I would have finished it a lot quicker. And finally Dorian Gray. I wasn’t sure if this really fits for Antihero but google said so, and it’s been on my tbr for years, making it one I really wanted to tackle. There were beautiful moments in it and other times it took a lot to keep going. But generally a good read. I’ve also just started the first of the Percy Jackson books as the next book.
I hope everyone’s reading summer is going well ☀️ Happy reading 😊
