Memory Industry to Hit Muddy Waters in 2023

The memory industry has always gone through a predictable boom-and-bust cycle, but the pandemic and geopolitical instability has introduced new twists to the market over the course of 2022, and uncertainty will continue to play a role in 2023.

In late 2021, the automotive sector was an indicator for looming supply chain woes. As recently as November 2022, the chip shortage forced automaker Toyota to temporarily issue metal keys for new cars in Japan—new vehicle customers will now receive one smart key and an old-school metal key. The low-tech tactic comes at a time when many chipmakers have announced workforce cuts in response to a supply/demand mismatch—most recently and notable is Micron Technology. Meanwhile, Intel is implementing a series of job cuts due in part to a PC slump.

To further muddy the waters, the cuts come at a time when both Micron and Intel are investing in new manufacturing facilities in the U.S., spurred by the recent CHIPS and Science Act. Micron plans to invest up to $100 billion over the next 20 years to build a chip facility near Clay, N.Y. 

China's tough stance on Covid—only recently lightened somewhat—has also put pressure on the overall supply chain landscape, while a shortage of a single component or materials could damper the delivery of a device.

Given all this uncertainty, including the threat of a recession, confusion is the natural reaction, Jennifer Strawn, head of global solutions and sourcing for Rand Technology, told EE Times. There's also a hangover from the sudden, massive demand for 5G and IT infrastructure in 2020 to support remote work. "All these things have to be built out," Strawn said. 

This has led to a huge spike in demand for raw materials and chips, she added, which stabilized by the end of 2022. It was a different story earlier in the year, however.

Limited allocation challenges smaller players

Confusion is an apt term because fabs are tasked with producing different complexities for varying types of chips, Strawn said. "To support all the different types of technology that go into products, there's a capacity issue." 

Fabs must figure out what the right mix is to optimize for what's going to be produced, including raw materials as well as the right talent—the capacity of the fab is a factor, as is the capacity of the overall supply chain. Strawn said the war in Ukraine creates problems for the neon gas supply needed for equipment. "Copper is looking to be a problem moving into the future as a raw material. There isn't just one implication that's impacting your supply chain."

If you were a smaller player looking for components, such as memory, earlier this year, you might have found yourself having to make compromises as the major memory makers were likely to prioritize larger customers. 

Anthony Le, VP of marketing at Macronix, said the beginning of the pandemic saw a massive shutdown of just about everything—that included the automotive sector because no one was driving. The shutdown was temporary, however, and the demand for automatic electronics followed a hockey-stick trajectory.

Le said Macronix's ability to deliver was consistent, but demand had tripled by late 2020. By 2021, the hope was the supply and demand would balance out, but the pandemic created a wide range of challenges, some of which had nothing to do with electronics themselves, such as shipping issues and talent shortages.

Le attributed component shortages to delays in purchase orders, and the effects were more prominent depending on the product—a shortage of display chips wreaked havoc in late 2021 and cut across all electronics segments, not just automotive. "And even if you could do everything right at your end, you could run into barriers because of port delays. It's just sitting in a container somewhere," Le said. He added that factory shutdowns in China affected everything from automotive to PCs and smartphones.

In the meantime, he said, everyone was at home, which created demand for a whole host of devices, including PCs, Wi-Fi routers and set-top boxes for streaming. This, in turn, meant that Internet service providers needed to make investments to accommodate home users and their increased bandwidth needs.

Supply chain hurdles beget optimization, transparency

Le said Macronix's strategy for dealing with supply hurdles and high demand was moving its product mix across its three fabs to optimize capacity so that the company could scale up to higher densities and implement 3D technologies. "Macronix saw this wave coming." 

Specifically, the need for higher densities in automotive was apparent. "We play a pretty niche market, which continues to grow, especially in automotive," Le said.

Transparency across the supply chain is critical, he added, and Macronix focused on how it could best triangulate the products and the forecasts with what automaker OEMs require. Talking to customers regularly and allocating parts as much as possible is also important. He said the challenge for some customers was that they didn't have the volumes necessary for other vendors to allocate parts to because even a hundred thousand units was too small.

For Macronix, volume is one factor. "The other one is: What kind of long-term relationship can we have with you?" 

In the meantime, inventory cycles got much shorter, going from quarters to weeks, and customers realized they may have to redesign a product, such as a microcontroller, because of part availability. Le said Macronix could respond by doing some redesigning on its end. 

The automotive segment wasn't the only industry where devices had to retool to account for component and material shortages, and the shift to remote work wasn't the only contributor to a massive uptick in demand for memory. Artificial intelligence (AI) applications and workloads were arguably oblivious to the pandemic and kept their growth pace.

With AI, memory demands can be formidable, while routers in demand by remote workers obviously required less. Even though the memory needs were lower, the sheer volume proliferation of routers had a significant impact on memory supply. 

Anand said this is where designers must make trade-offs, with a particular focus on how to reduce requirements and the number of needed parts, so that they're not in the broad market fighting for allotment with a buyer who has a lot more leverage to grab most of the supply.

New designs may require workarounds

Whether it's AI, automotive or any other industry, Anand said startups must think hard about how much memory they really need. "It's essential that new companies look at design points and pick memories and other things that are not at the bleeding edge, but at least at the leading edge with a significant capacity that's being manufactured around the world." 

He said it's critical to be aware of who the suppliers and the alternatives are, as well as pay attention to forecasts and whether it makes sense to pre-buy further in advance. "You want to make sure that you have more than one supply choice."

When a customer must look for a different supplier due to shortages, it can create opportunities for a company. Alliance Memory's business, for example, was built on taking over end-of-life (EOL) product lines. But even before the pandemic, these so-called "legacy" memories were demonstrating even more longevity because not every device needs the latest and greatest memory—even today, DDR3 DRAM is enough for new medical diagnostic equipment.

David Bagby, president and CEO of Alliance Memory, said even prior to pandemic-induced supply shortages, the major DRAM and NAND makers were focused on bigger customers, which has been a boon to his company as smaller players sought out Alliance for its inventory. If you weren't a big fish, you couldn't get parts, he said. "We pride ourselves on that inventory. That's really paid off for us."

The irony is that Alliance accounts for about 1% of the DRAM market, Bagby said, but serves more customers than every DRAM manufacturer out there because the company supports smaller customers who don't need the high-volume purchase order that the major DRAM vendors cater to. He said the company's mentality of carrying inventory countered the "just in time" approach of major distributors, meaning Alliance was well suited for the pandemic era—especially the early days as the demand for PCs and routers spiked to accommodate remote work.

The success of Alliance's model has meant it's no longer really a legacy memory supplier, but an alternative source. Bagby said it's now offering DDR4 DRAM, including low-power DDR4. "These are state-of-the-art products." 

As a private company, Alliance has been able to reinvest all the profits to continue growth, in part by cornering the market on certain parts as suppliers reduce or EOL them while focusing on customers of a certain size. 

The flattening out of demand that's occurring now is something Bagby was expecting because the demand created by those working and staying home was eventually going to be fully met, followed by another pivot as the world began to open again. 

The end of 2022 saw a dip in overall chip demand as consumers spent less on gadgets, and there are signs that the shortage dogging the automotive sector is nearly over. However, Rand's Strawn said not only did the world change with the pandemic, but it's also not fully recovered. 

At present, there's surplus inventory in some segments as others struggle with specific components and materials shortages that interfere with getting devices out the door. Strawn said China lifting its Zero-Covid strategy should alleviate some of the transportation hiccups and factory shutdowns, which can only help the supply chain. 

Rand is helping its customer figure out what to do with their surplus inventory, all while continuing to navigate the supply chain issues, such as capacity constraints and materials availability. "Once the surplus gets consumed, we're almost back to where we started 2022." 

She said the delayed adoption of DDR5 could occur in 2023, while the tipping point for electric vehicles in 2024 along with non-stop advancement of AI will continue to drive the semiconductor market as supply chain hiccups get ironed out.

“I’m going down there.” Virgil declared as he unbuckled his harness and stalked down to the module area. “John, can you remote pilot Four back to the surface?” He knew his space-bound brother was listening in.

John’s FAB was drowned out as Scott interrupted. “It’s too dangerous Virgil. What if there are more explosives? What if the chaos crew are still down there?”

“All the more reason to get Gordon sooner rather than later.” Virgil replied calmly as he pulled his helmet over his head. “I’m going.”

“Thunderbird Four has breached the surface.” John reported before Scott could protest further.

“Just be careful Virgil.” Scott demanded. “Please.”

“I will Scott.” Virgil softened. “Heading down.”

Thunderbirds Four was always an uncomfortable fit for him. His shoulders were too wide for the seat and it always felt claustrophobic. This wasn’t a choice though. He grit his teeth as he manoeuvred the small submersible down to the flooding storage facility. Moving around the structure, he started scanning it using his brothers Bird. The scans were sent straight up to Thunderbird Five.

“Anything John?” He queried once he’d been round the building once.

“There may be a small opening on the lower right side.” John relayed as a map and route appeared in front of Virgil “But the inside is flooded with debris, it’ll be hard to get through to him.”

“I’ll manage.” Virgil promised before bracing himself to be flipped backwards into the water.

He swam forward once he oriented himself, the holographic map flashing from his watch. He turned on his shoulder torch as he reached the opening. He easily pulled himself though as a small current of water was still flooding the facility. The water was almost up to the ceiling, it would be fully flooded soon.

Virgil’s first problem presented itself. There was a wall of debris currently cutting him off from his brothers location, this was going to be a slow process. He’d just started shifting some beams when a gasp came across the comms.

“Gordon!” He and Scott both exclaimed.

Gordon’s harsh breathing continued to sound in his ear. “Virg?” Gordon croaked.

Virgil’s heartrate spiked as worry surfaced once more.

“Yeah, I’m here fish, I’m coming to get you.”

Gordon moaned through clenched teeth. “M’trapped.”

“Just stay calm Gordon, what can you move?” Virgil queried gently as he started moving debris away faster.

He could hear his brother shifting through the comm before the younger blond gave a sharp cry of pain that turned into a sob.

Panic flared through Virgil. “Gords, what’s wrong?”

“The whole left side of my suit is burned.” Gordon gritted out before taking a few panicked breathes. “And there’s urghh-there’s a slab of concrete on my chest.”

There was a shrill beeping from Gordon’s end.

“What’s that?” Virgil asked, fearing it was another bomb.

“M-my oxygen meter.” Gordon groaned. “My suit was damaged in the explosion. I only have a few minutes of air left.”

Virgil heart thudded so loud he was sure it could be heard over the comms.

Gordon gave an almost hysterical laugh. “Not looking great for me is it?” His voice cracked at the end and his breathing shuddered to reveal his true feelings.

“Just relax Gords, breathe slow.” Virgil soothed, trying to keep his voice steady. “We’ll get you out of this.”

He switched channels so that Gordon couldn’t hear him anymore. “There’s no way I can shift all this stuff in time.” Virgil relayed urgently. “We need a new plan.”

He heard John typing frantically in the background. “Your laser won’t be strong enough underwater to cut through any of the walls.” John mumbled. “And Thunderbird Four won’t be able to get far enough into the facilities for you to use her laser. There’s not enough time to construct a pod-“

“I don’t need to hear what we can’t do John!” Virgil grumbled. “I need an option here.”

“I’m looking Virgil!” John shot back.

“Cool it, both of you.” Scott barked. “We need to keep a level head here. Treat it like any other rescue.”

Virgil took a deep shaky breath. “FAB. Sorry John.”

There was no answer from his space-bound brother and Virgil didn’t want to interrupt him even though the seconds were ticking by far too quickly.

“I’ve got it!” John finally said. “There’s a surface protocol built into the facility that will activate the buoyancy balloons and bring it to the surface. The control room is to your left Virgil, looks like a clear path.”

Virgil was already swimming that way as Scott spoke. “Won’t he be crushed without the water providing some buoyancy to the concrete?”

John hummed. “It looks like it’s just one slab on top of Gordon but surfacing the building could cause further structural damage, so yes it’s a risk but-“

“But we don’t have any other choice.” Virgil finished for him as he reached the control room. “What am I looking for John?”

“Red lever on the wall by the door.”

Virgil spied said lever and grabbed it, forcing it down through the resistance of the water. Nothing seemed to happen at first and Virgil’s heart sank. This was their last chance. Then the building shuddered and Virgil could hear the whoosh of air as the bags below the structure inflated. They started to rise.

“Virgil, I’ve mapped a new route for you to Gordon. Once the water drains, your laser should be able to cut through that wall to get to Gordon.” John relayed.

“FAB.” He switched comm channels again as he swam back to his brother once more. “Gordon! We’re heading to the surface, just hang tight.”

Gordon’s wheezing breath came across the comm. “FAB.”

“There might be a bit of pressure once the water drains but I’ll be right there. We’re going to get you out of this.” Virgil was trying to convince himself just as much as Gordon.

He could tell as soon as they breached the surface, the currents increased as the water started to drain away. The building groaned dramatically and Virgil held his breath but it seemed to hold.

Once the water was at shoulder height Virgil activated his laser, cutting through the top half of the wall, impatiently waiting for more of the water to drain.

Gordon gave a choked grunt when he was almost though, crying out in pain before going eerily silent. Virgil decided he’d cut far enough at that point and finished off the incision, pushing the chuck of concrete through to the other side.

He clambered through the hole and immediately set sights on his brother. Gordon was lying on top of a collapsed wall with a thick slab of concrete pinning him down. The left side of his helmet was charred black and Virgil feared for the state of his suit once he removed the slab.

His brother was unresponsive as he set up the load-bearing stands at three key points under the concrete. Once he activated them, they slowly began to raise the debris. As soon as it was safe to do so, Virgil carefully slid his brother out from under it.

He removed his brothers helmet checking his airways. Breathing was weak but there. The worst part were the burns down Gordon’s suit. From the neck to his hip, the neoprene fabric was charred and melted. Virgil could see areas where the fabric was melted into Gordon skin and he shuddered.

“Hey fish” He choked, running a hand through his brother hair. “Told you we’d get you out. Maybe open those eyes for me in return?”

Gordon face remained slack and he sighed as he took out his portable medscanner. Scott clambered through the hole in the wall, pulling a hover stretcher with him, just as he got the readings.

“Aw Gords” Scott sighed as he knelt down on the other side of him, pacing a gentle hand on his shoulder. “What does the scan say?”

“Third-degree burns all down his side, cracked ribs from the concrete, possible concussion.” Virgil grimaced as he read it off. “We need to get him to a hospital.”

“FAB.” Scott sighed as they expertly lifted him onto the hover stretcher, the lack of response from their brother at the movement was alarming.

Virgil sighed as he took another sip of the 4th terrible cup of hospital coffee he’d consumed. Gordon had been in surgery for 3 hours now and they still hadn’t heard anything. John and Kayo were working with the GDF to try and track down the chaos crew. Virgil clenched his fists. They’d gone too far this this time. He had no more chances left to give them.

“I think we should do some more underwater rescue training.” Virgil said suddenly. Scott, the only other occupant in the room, turned towards him.

Virgil continued. “We’re out of practice. Gordon deserves to know he can count on us when he needs it.”

“You think he can’t?” Scott queried.

Virgil shrugged. “I’m just always so out of my element down there.”

“You saved him today.”

“John came up with the plan.” Virgil still had to apologise properly for snapping at him earlier.

“And you got him out. We’re a team Virg, Gordon knows he can count on us.”

Virgil hummed in supposed agreement but if he went out swimming more than usual in the next few months no one mentioned it either.

Part of me wanted to do a Year In Review post, like I’ve seen a few other creators do, but instead of talking about myself (which I do for the entire rest of the year anyway lmao), I’m gonna do a reclist instead, of the best fics I’ve read this year. A lot of it is BNHA, because that’s been my main fandom for 2020, but I did spend a decent amount of time in other spaces. Complete – A quick disclaimer, pia is a mutual and a friend. That being said, this is such a cute little snapshot into the LOV with everyone’s favorite Found Family trope. Now, I’ll admit to being additionally biased because pia gave me that sweet sweet Dadpress food, but her Spinner is also on point. Short and sweet.

the Issue of the Jeanist Corpse (the Jorpse) by Princeliest (Hawks & Jeanist Gen)

Complete – Witty and hilarious, a deleted scene when Hawks went to visit Best Jeanist before War Arc. I love how antsy Hawks is, and how fussy Jeanist. Also, I’m a sucker for putting a j at the beginning of everything for Jeaninst.

Queer Eye: We're In Japan! And There Are Pro Heroes Everywhere!! by night_of_the_living_trashcan (Background Erasermic Family)

Complete – I love a good Queer Eye fic, and this one is so spot on. The Fab Five couldn’t get a better candidate than Aizawa (well, almost; see below). And I’m a sucker for Erasermic family.

 **Yesterday's Gods by Karzai (All Might/Reader)

WIP - Reader character is an ex-military doctor who comes to work at UA. If you’re a fan of very well-developed backstories, and reader characters that are their own people, then this is the fic for you. This fic gives me huge Newsroom vibes - we’ve got a past romance, and the tension after years apart. We get present day when they are older and more jaded, and we get the backstory of the reader character and All Might when they were young and spry.

**surrender (whenever you're ready) by OfMermaids ( @ofmermaidstories) (Bakugou/Reader)

WIP - Bakugou accidentally destroys a florist’s shop. Bar none the best Bakugou fic out there - his characterization is so on point. He is grouchy but so vulnerable, he’s coarse and soft and insecure and such a perfectionist. The relationship with the reader character develops very naturally, and the chapters are long. Bonus, we get some bangin’ Kiri as well.

 **if i could keep cool by andypantsx3 ( @andypantsx3) (Todoroki/Reader)

Complete – I’m in love with the premise of the fic: a hired cleaner gets kidnapped due to a misunderstanding of the romantic variety. Andie’s Todo is well written, and the pacing of the story is nice and tight. An easy read.

 **Subject: RAPTOR by Tainted_Wine ( @tainted-wine)(Hawks/Reader)

Complete – The villains have turned Hawks into a Nomu, and reader works collecting semen for the facility for breeding purposes. Bigtime monster-fucking, but it’s very poignant and well-done. Very long, but well worth the time.

 **My Hero by HeroAssociation(Aizawa/Reader)

WIP – Reader character is a milf whose son enters a contest to meet his favorite hero and wins. The author’s Aizawa is really good, and the scenes with the reader’s son are very realistic for maternal love. And, I cannot emphasize this enough, reader character is a milf. It’s incomplete, and hasn’t updated in a while, but the premise is so cute I can’t not include it.

Complete – Baby’s first hanahaki. Honestly a very cute little hanahaki – no angst or sads, just two idiots in love. A nice quick read.

Complete – Aizawa gets turned into a cat by a villain’s quirk, and the reader character takes care of him until it wears off. I’ve heard this premise is popular? But I haven’t seen too too many, and this one is very well executed. Aizawa’s characterization is solid, and the pacing is very good. A very sweet read.

**no grave to hold my body down by Hawnks (supermintfluff) ( @hawnks)(Shinsou/Reader)

Complete – Pro Hero Shinsou saves the reader character, and they keep running into each other. This one is a good character study on adult Shinsou, and Hawnks’ writing is always very clean and lovely. I recommend going through their entire selection.

Love Like You by Queen_Kai (Shinsou/Reader)

Complete – Color Soulmate AU with a villain reader. Very cute, and I adore Shinsou’s characterization in this one. I honestly wish there was more, but it stands on its own very well.

Naruto

**Maid with Benefits by awolangel (Akatsuki/Reader)

WIP – Reader is hired to be a live-in maid to the Akatsuki, and also have lots of sex. This fic is hilarious, and so well characterized. The pacing is actually really good, as well as the development of all of the relationships. There are some characters that get more attention than others, but we do get a nice spread. Very fun escapism fic.

Moonshine by Victopteryx ( @ancharan) (HashiMada)

Complete – Prohibition Era Bootlegging AU. Author’s handle on both Madara and Hashirama is incredible (and they draw their own fanart, and it’s also incredible). A whole-ass meal.

Tobirama Kicks Some Sense Into Konoha by allseer15 (Tobirama&Naruto Gen) 

Complete – Tobirama gets sent back in time due to an accidental jutsu, and is horrified at the way Konoha is run, and promptly Rampages over it. Wonderful catharsis for anyone who wondered why it was okay for a rich-ass old man to just leave an infant a welfare check and a shitty apartment and dip out on his development even though he has the equivalent of a nuclear warhead in his upper intestine.

Misc

**Clouds by moriamithril (Star Wars Rogue One, Cassian Andor/Reader)

Complete – Reader character is a handler/assistant type figure to Cassian over a series of missions. We get a lot of emotions in this one – we get the tenderness of caring for someone who is ill, we get devotion, we get yearning, we get delicious jealousy. Well written and lovely.

Fresh Coat by scrapmetal (The Mandalorian, Boba & Din Gen)

Complete – Fantastic Boba and Din, the Mando culture representation we deserve. I’m love.

**A Far Greater Sin (Reader version) by Yavannie (The Mandalorian, Din Djarin/Reader)

Complete – Reader is a healer, and builds a relationship with Mando over the course of a couple decades. Great pacing, great RC development, and the author’s Mando is quite good. The premise/setting gives me wicked fantasy vibes, even though it’s obviously In Space, but that’s definitely a draw.

who's gonna save us now (when the ashes hit the ground) by chancellor_valdez (Ready or Not, Grace/Daniel)

Complete – My favorite of the “Grace and Daniel Survive Together” subgenere, this one is very raw with its emotions. There’s a lot of hurt, and there’s a lot of self-harming coping mechanisms. Recovery is ugly, and the author did a very good job showing us that. And their ending was lovely.

not your garden variety demon lord by rizahawkaye (Inuyasha, SanSessh)

Complete – Sango takes care of Rin sometimes, and gets confused when Sesshoumaru brings her gifts. The author’s Sessh is so good, and it’s a great exploration of a relationship we don’t see much of.

Mine Enemy by Ayrith (Inuyasha, InuSan)

Complete – I love this fic, okay. Fantastic character study in Sango and a lot of the rougher parts of her that canon shied away from, and the author’s Inuyasha characterization is fucking great. Just go read this, yes.

Frozen Plus One by Meowzy (Frozen, HansAnna)

WIP – Troll AU, ie the trolls cursed Hans and that’s why he is That Way. Look, this author has done such a good job with all of the characters. Their voices are very distinct, and it’s not a reach at all to see how it could have gone differently. And we get some sweet HansAnnaKris action, and it is just as we deserve. Honestly, this fic is so well written, it deserves the world.

Knives In by anomalation (Knives Out, Marta/Ransom)

Complete – My favorite of the Pen Pals subgenre, this one is a fantastic slow burn. Ransom is really forced to face himself, and Marta is such a babe. Meg makes a few appearances, and her confusion over her place in the world is really well done. A great enemies-to-lovers.

It's Not Anxiety, It's a Parasite by squadrickchestopher (Venom, Queer Eye)

Complete – Look, I’ve mentioned before, but I love a good Queer Eye fic. Eddie gets what he deserves, and the symbiote couldn’t be more happy. So funny and clever.

You Find Yourself in a Maze by FloaromaMeadow ( @zombiekaiba) (S0 Atem Gen)

Complete – Very short and very poignant, the style is modeled after text-based command games. It fits super well with the Season 0 aesthetic, and there’s so much punch in each command.

Scott has always told Kayo that International Rescue’s business is to save people, not to catch the bad guys. It shouldn’t have been a surprise to Scott that when he broke his own rule, things went completely awry.

This is for my "Bad Thing Happen Bingo Card." The prompt here was Scott and Killing in Self Defense. It was requested by @thunderbird-one-ai

Scott had lost count of the number of times that he had had to tell Kayo that International Rescue was not in the business of catching criminals. That was a job for law enforcement. International Rescue’s job was, first and foremost, to save lives.

Perhaps this was the reason Scott found himself justifying his presence at an abandoned complex where he had just seen the Hood’s vehicle enter after his latest scheme. He had stolen an experimental substance in an attempt to pawn it off to the highest bidder.

The Hood doesn’t know how to handle such a volatile compound. He just stole it for the money. How much damage could he do unintentionally if it was mishandled? Scott would be remiss if he didn’t at least attempt to stop the Hood before some sort of disaster befell everyone.

The excuse felt weak even to Scott, but he couldn’t think about that now. He needed to be focused on the task at hand. He’d take care of this and then use the flight back to the island to come up with a better excuse.

As he circled around for a place to land Thunderbird One, he was surprised to see a GDF ship landed in a barren stretch of land a small distance from the compound. He’d only just alerted John to the pursuit and he hadn’t quite expected the GDF to be quite so Johnny-on-the-spot. He landed just next to the GDF ship, descending from Thunderbird One and coming face to face with a Rigby that seemed just as surprised to see him.

“I’m surprised to see you here this quickly, Captain,” Scott said, the teasing in his voice good natured. “John only just told me he was getting in contact with you.” Rigby’s shock disappeared just as quickly as it had appeared on his features and he shrugged.

“What can I say? I was in the neighborhood. And it’s not every day I get to beat a Thunderbird to the punch,” he said, clapping Scott on the shoulder. Scott ducked out of the familiar gesture with an eye roll.

“Let’s save the celebrations and gloating until the end of the mission, hmm?” Scott said. Rigby’s demeanor shifted to all business, knowing Scott was right. “I was able to trace and follow the Hood’s signal here. He’s somewhere in the compound just east of here.” Rigby nodded.

“John said as much. Isn’t nabbing criminals more my jurisdiction, though?” he asked.

“I won’t tell Kayo if you don’t,” Scott said and Rigby offered short chuckle in response.

“Well,” he said. “I guess I’ll just have to show International Rescue how things are done.” He turned to finish arming himself while Scott rolled his eyes at the captain’s back. The man had a chip on his shoulder that quite often rubbed Scott the wrong way. Not, he supposed, that he had any room to throw stones. He had heard plenty of people say the same about him when they didn’t think he could hear them.

He didn’t let himself dwell on that thought for too long, as Captain Rigby turned around. Rigby motioned Scott over to a set of computers at the back of the GDF ship, pulling up a map.

“From the scan I was able to do coming into the area, it looks like there are six extant buildings,” he said. Scott nodded. He had noticed as much from the air. Scott indicated one of the buildings on the screen.

“I saw the Hood’s vehicle going into an underground garage near this one,” he said. Rigby nodded.

“It’s as good a place to start as any,” Rigby said.

“Then let’s move.” Scott turned and led the way toward the compound. Rigby stayed just behind Scott as they moved. Scott could feel the hair on the back of his neck rising as they moved closer. Something ominous hung in the air, a heaviness surrounding the building that set Scott on edge. Perhaps it was the idea of another face to face confrontation with the Hood that set him so ill at ease. It didn’t help that the seemingly abandoned compound felt more like a warehouse belonging to a serial killer than the remnants of an old industrial plant.

Whatever it was, Scott pushed it to the back of his mind. He couldn’t let himself get distracted. Not when the Hood was somewhere inside. And where the Hood was, the Chaos Crew couldn’t be far behind. He had to keep his wits about him. Scott paused as the compound came into view. While infiltrating was not going to be any form of rocket science, it wasn’t a situation he had hoped to find himself in. Next to him, Rigby frowned deeply.

“Awful lot of entry and exit points,” he said. “We probably stand a better chance of covering all the exits if we split up.” This time, it was Scott’s turn to frown at the suggestion.

“We don’t know if he is alone in there. If we split up and the Chaos Crew is in hiding in there already, it’s easier to overwhelm one than two,” he reasoned. Hell, if they only encountered the Chaos Crew, sticking together would even the odds. Rigby considered Scott’s words for a moment.

“That’s fair,” he said. “I suppose you are right in that respect. It took Kayo and I both to take Havoc on before.” Scott barely suppressed the urge to tell Captain Rigby that that wasn’t necessarily how Kayo told that story. They would have enough time to banter with each other after they took care of things. “Ok, Tracy, let’s go!” Rigby broke cover and started toward the structure before Scott had a moment to process. Scott’s brow creased. The headstrong captain could be a real pain if he set his mind to it.

Scott broke cover and followed Rigby down to the warehouse, taking up a position on the opposite side of the door as the captain. Rigby led the way inside, the room filled with crates and boxes and metal shelves. Scott’s eyebrow rose. Perhaps this facility wasn’t quite as abandoned as everyone was made to believe. Scott turned on the light on his suit to see if he could read the labels on the crates. Curiosity and a sense of impending danger made him cautious. If there was something in these containers that could be used against him, he would be wise to check it over before he got into a confrontation.

His fingers traced over the surface of the containers, finding no outward indication of what might be inside, though his glove came away with dust on the fingertips. He continued along the rows and aisles, checking dutifully around every corner as he moved through the facility. He could hear Rigby following in his footsteps.

As he turned another corner, he came face to face with an empty container, which drew his brow together even more. Something about this didn’t feel right. Why would the Hood steal a valuable and volatile substance, only to lead him to a warehouse with old, empty containers? It didn’t add up.

A loud clang from the other side of the room had him turning and sinking into a defensive crouch as the sound reverberated in the metal building. His muscle memory from his days in the military continued to serve him well in that respect. His eyes turned to the sound of footsteps running, only to find that Rigby had taken off in the direction from which the sound had come from.

Goddammit, Rigby! Scott thought to himself. When this was all over, he was going to have to talk to the GDF, or perhaps to Kayo if he thought she could make the captain come to heel. He cautiously moved toward the end of the aisle, not wanting to give away his position in case Rigby got himself in trouble running off on his own like that. His senses were on high alert, so when John’s voice came through the comms in his suit, he nearly had a heart attack.

“Scott, this is Thunderbird five,” he said.

“Yeah, I noticed,” Scott said, a bit more testily than perhaps his little brother deserved, but he was still trying to soothe his senses into a level of acuteness rather than the overload he was currently experience. When John spoke again, Scott could hear the frown in his voice.

“I’m sorry for the delay, Scott,” he said. “The GDF is on their way. Estimated time of-”

“GDF is already here,” Scott said as a sound had him advancing toward its origin cautiously. Scott wondered vaguely how Thunderbird Five’s information could be so behind. Was there a system bug that was causing the lag? There was a long pause and Scott wondered if maybe John had simply moved on to help one of their other brothers, but his brother’s voice came through his helmet once more, concern in his voice.

“Scott, I just got off comms with the GDF. I double checked the coordinates Thunderbird Five is registering with Captain Rigby. He’s currently leaving a situation in New Caledonia. Both Captain Rigby and Colonel Casey confirm there are no GDF craft in the area. Whoever you are in there with…it’s not the GDF.” John said. Scott’s blood froze, ice creeping through every inch of his body, and for a moment all he could hear was the pounding of his heart. Scott took several moments to respond, and it was a pause too long for John. “Scott?”

“FAB,” Scott said automatically, almost dismissively as his mind spun with other possibilities. If the person he came in with wasn’t Rigby…then he had to have been face to face with Havoc. Kayo had briefed them all on her holographic technology. The ice running through him deepened and his stomach dropped when he followed that through to its logical conclusion. That meant that he had dropped Thunderbird One right in the lap of the Chaos Crew, especially if the supposed GDF ship was really the Chaos Cruiser in disguise. His heart began to pound in his chest. He had to get back to Thunderbird One. He couldn’t let them get their hands on it.

“Scott?” John prompted again, worried at his brother’s silence.

“Lock down Thunderbird One’s systems,” Scott said, his tone much more level than he felt. “There’s a potential that she will be compromised. Alert me if there is any attempt to override lock down.”

“FAB,” John replied. “Are you ok?”

“I’m making a retreat to regroup with the GDF,” he said. “I’m inside the warehouse on location. At least one adversary is in the building with me.” He began to make his way back down the rows of containers. This wasn’t going to be a fair fight if he got caught on his own. Why hadn’t he listened to his own advice and remembered that International Rescue was not law enforcement.

He was nearly to the door when there was a horrible wrenching sound of metal on metal. He turned to see one of the containers falling toward him. He jumped out of the way and landed roughly as the container landed with a crash. Dust from years of disuse kicked up like a cloud and blinded Scott for a moment, holding up a hand to protect himself from the cloud rolling toward him despite the fact that he still wore his helmet.

“Scott? Scott?! What was that?!” John asked. Scott recognized that the panic in his brother’s voice was a testament to exactly how bad the situation looked from above.

“I’m ok, John,” he said, his eyes scanning the area. That shelf hadn’t failed on its own. That must mean that Fuse had to be nearby. He was the only one who could have done that much damage that quickly.

“What happened?” John asked. Scott didn’t have time to answer. A figure came flying out of the dust cloud, and it took all of Scott’s military instincts to block the attack. He rolled backward and out of the way, but his assailant was relentless. They had Scott on the retreat.

Scott got a lucky break as he rolled behind a shelf. It was only a few moments, but it was enough to get Scott on his feet and ready to face his attacker head on. He wasn’t disappointed as the figure came hurtling around the corner, weapons at the ready. Scott dodged out of the way, his heart stuttering for a moment when he saw that it was Rigby.

No.

Not Rigby.

Havoc. Rigby wouldn’t attack him like this. The shift from rescuer to soldier was almost instantaneous. Instinct took over as Havoc came for him. Scott dodged a punch and thought, in a brief moment as he took his own swing, that this wasn’t Havoc’s normal style. She liked to attack from afar, not get so up close and personal. What was her aim?

Scott had thought a little too long. Havoc took him to his knees with an attack he hadn’t been expecting. An arm was around his neck, cutting off his air. It was as if a switch had been flipped in his mind. It was obvious that she was dead set on taking him out of the picture. Scott’s muscle memory had him breaking out of the hold and shoving Havoc back.

There was a sound of pain and a squelching as his opponent fell back against one of the shelves that had been damaged in the earlier blast. Scott looked up and his eyes widened. It was jarring to see Rigby’s appearance with a spike of damaged metal through his chest. Hell, even with it being Havoc, it was still a shock. Scott moved over to explore the damage. There was wet breathing.

“Get…way from me.” The words were spoken through wet breaths.

“Shhh,” Scott said. “Don’t talk. I’m going to see if I can help.”

“Don’t need your help!” A wet cough and a groan of pain with a struggle.

“You’ll hurt yourself!” Scott said. He could see the life leaving Rigby’s face and the thought scared him, even if it was Havoc. While he had seen men die before, he always hated taking a life. No matter what Scott did, he couldn’t seem to stem the bleeding. Despite knowing he couldn’t save him, Scott was pouring his all into trying to do anything to stem the bleeding.

It was a moment before there was only the sound of Scott’s breath. There was no labored breathing, and Rigby’s body sagged against the broken containers and shelves. He hung his head.

“I’m sorry I couldn’t save you Havoc,” he muttered under his breath.

“What are you on about?” The voice came from behind him. Scott turned quickly and his heart dropped. Havoc stood at the other end of the corridor of containers, tossing one of her holospheres up and down in her hands. The color began to drain from Scott’s face. If that was Havoc then….

“What…how….” No….he couldn’t have killed Rigby…he couldn’t… “Why did he attack me? What did you do, Havoc?!” Havoc smiled, clearly pleased with herself, pulling a small device no bigger than her fingertip from a hidden compartment in her suit.

“It’s a portable digital signal that can be unobtrusively planted on someone to alter their appearance.” Scott’s mind immediately shot back to the moment back before this all unfolded where the person he had thought to be Rigby had clapped him on the shoulder. He reached back over his shoulder and he felt his fingers brush against a raised feature he knew was not a part of his suit. Scott could taste bile as the reality of what he had done caught up with him. Rigby had attacked him because he had looked like someone else….Havoc. The Hood. Fuse. It didn’t matter. Rigby had thought it just as much a combat situation as Scott had. He dropped to his knees.

“You bitch…” Scott said. He didn’t lightly call any woman a bitch, but Havoc had just forced his hand in killing one of his business associates and a friend.

“Now now now,” came a voice speaking in a low purr that he knew could only be one person. He looked up to see the Hood coming from behind Havoc. “It’s not exactly fair to lay all the blame at Havoc’s feet. After all, this was your fault.” The words took the air from his lungs as his fingers dug into the ground.

Your fault.

My fault.

The Hood cocked his head and listened for a moment. The familiar roar of engines as another craft approach was nearly lost through the sound of blood pumping through Scott’s ears and the concentration required to keep him from throwing up. The Hood smirked.

“I really would love to stay and chat, but it seems as though we’ve outstayed our welcome here. Scott looked up in time to see Havoc activate the same device she had activated before. Scott barely registered that the Hood had taken on Scott’s appearance, or that Havoc had taken on the appearance of the Hood. He didn’t know who he looked like. It didn’t matter. He knew he was being set up to take the fall.

And deep inside, he knew he deserved it too.

“What’s going on with your wrist?”

Jaime stopped the scratch of his fingers against his shirt sleeve and frowned at his brother. “I’m not sure. I think it’s the new watch Mel bought me. Maybe I’m having a reaction to the metal.” He shrugged. “I’ll take it off when we get inside.”

“I still don’t know why you had to drag me along to this.”

This being visiting a number of wedding venues for Jaime’s upcoming nuptials to Melara, his sister’s childhood friend and his partner for the past three years. “I told you, Mel got called into work, and the wedding planner needs a decision so we can finally book a place. Mel’s already seen them, so I just need to sign off.”

Tyrion raised a single eyebrow. “And you couldn’t have seen them by yourself?”

Jaime cleared his throat, diverting his gaze out the window lest his brother draw conclusions that had no basis in reality. “No. And we’re here.”

The first of three possible venues was the Dragonglass Hotel. As Jaime stepped out of the car and onto the kerb, he knew instantly that this was not the place. The building was all sleek glass and modern furnishings; the foyer minimalistic, the colour scheme lashings of black and red. The two Lannisters looked entirely out of place. As did their wedding planner in a crisp blue shirt; the corner of her collar misfolded, the only error in her otherwise immaculate ensemble. 

“Mister Lannister!” Brienne called out, waving her hand to get his attention. As if she hadn’t caught it already. “Did you find the venue okay?”

“Your directions were, as always, precise. Right down to the traffic lights.” A fine pink flush formed across Brienne’s cheeks. Jaime grinned. “Mel couldn’t join us; got called into work. This is my brother, the best man. Tyrion, this is our wedding planner, Brienne Tarth.”

“A pleasure.”

They shook hands and exchanged pleasantries. Jaime took in little; he was too concerned by the persistent itch at his wrist. He ran his nails along the skin, hoping to provide a modicum of relief. Nothing. He would have to take that damn watch off, throw it in a drawer, and hope Mel never asked after it so he wouldn’t have to explain that a token of her affection was causing him such irritation. 

Suddenly, Jaime felt someone tug at his jacket sleeve. He looked down to see a girl, no older than seven, look at him with bright green eyes. She presented her wrist. “I got mine today, too.” 

“That’s not—”

“—Jaime!” He jerked his head to his right, where Tyrion and Brienne had already made a few steps forward. “We’re heading off to see the event room now. Are you alright?” 

“I’m fine.”

With one last scratch to his wrist, Jaime joined his brother and Brienne in the direction of the Dragonglass event room. His thoughts, however, drifted back to the little girl waiting to check out. It was just the watch. It couldn’t be–not after all this time. Most received their soul marks upon their seventh nameday; a matching one forming upon their soulmates wrist. But not everyone was so lucky. Some were not made for love; some were not ready for it. When Jaime’s hadn’t appeared, he had tried to see it as a blessing. He could choose whom he loved, rather than it being forced upon him. 

But we don’t get to choose who we love, Jaime thought, and my other half might finally be ready for it. 

It could still be the watch. It had to be the watch. He was getting married in seven months, and he loved Melara. Taking in a deep breath, Jaime recommitted himself to exploring wedding venues. He drew close to Brienne and peppered her with questions about the reception; the space for dancing; the capacity for guests to stay in the hotel itself. Talking to Brienne was a great help: he was refocused on his wedding and the itch on his wrist began to lessen. See, he told the doubting portion of his brain, it was just the watch. 

“And we’re here!” 

Brienne swept open the doors to the event hall which was, in essence, a big glass box. Light flooded the room; the view over the Bay spectacular. Jaime could, in some way, see the appeal. Modern, spacious, full of light. But it was also very...nothing. 

“You’re not happy.”

Jaime huffed, catching Brienne’s pointed gaze. “Is it that obvious?” 

Brienne tucked a strand of blonde hair behind her ear. “On occasion. Ms Hetherspoon liked how much light there was; she was considering filling the room with flowers. Obviously, with a guest list as significant as yours, the room would accommodate all five hundred guests.”

“Yes, while they sweat through their tuxedos and dresses.” Jaime pulled at his collar. 

Beside him, Tyrion dragged a crimson handkerchief across his brow. “You could raise orchids in here.”

“There are some downsides to this space,” Brienne admitted. Jaime still marvelled at her ability to find some good in everything, even this room. “But if you’re not happy, Mister Lannister, we can move onto the next space. Although, if I may—”

“—you may,” Jaime grinned. He liked when Brienne went off-book. 

She flushed. “I was thinking we could look outside the city. Somewhere with lots of light and picturesque views for Ms Hetherspoon. Somewhere with history and character for you, Mister Lannister. The grounds of a castle, perhaps.” 

Jaime beamed. A castle. Yes, he liked the sound of that. They had struck lucky with Brienne as their wedding planner; she understood both of their wants and needs much better than he could have ever anticipated. Just then, his wrist began to itch anew. Fuck. “If you’ll both excuse me, I just need to check out the hotel’s other facilities.” 

He left Brienne and Tyrion to discuss alternative venues (Harrenhal was a possibility; Casterly Rock was not) while Jaime sought some privacy to claw at his own wrist. He undid the fastenings of his watch as he walked but still found no relief. In the quiet of a cubicle, Jaime saw why. His soul mark had finally arrived. A golden lion clutching a sapphire in its mouth. Fuck. 

His soulmate was finally ready for him to love them. If only he hadn’t agreed to marry someone else first.

There's news on the activity in Zone 4! The draculoids have taken residence of a white building. There is no information on what's inside. My theories are that it's either a new research facility, trying to compensate for the new recall on antidepressants, or a torture chamber. Don't go over there if you don't want any new battle scars, killjoys. I, myself, cannot check this out, but I have a friend who is. Let's pray they stay safe.

The activity in Zone 3 is also confirmed, and it was a scuffle between two groups of killjoys. Remember, although we may have different views, we are all fighting the same enemy. Or, perhaps, we are the enemy. Who knows? What we do know is that there was nothing involving BLI, and the killjoys that took part left with only injuries. I don't want any more trouble out there in the zones, you hear! Or you're grounded!

I'm kidding. I can't do squat, unless you find me.

My Killjoy friend who is checking out the activity in Zone 3, I have a request to ask of you. It's nothing big, but do you have a name yet? I need something to call you. If you're new, and in need of a killjoy name, come talk to me, and we can work out something.

Zone 1 has some insane activity, and, yes, I was apart of it (I'm not a hermit. I just don't go out when it's unsafe, and that's a lot of the time). I was out scavenging a bit when I saw someone. I'm unsure of who they are, but they had green hair, goggles, and a lot of necklaces. We just looked at each other for a bit before they disappeared, and then I heard screaming and gunshots. When I followed the person, I saw that they were in a fight with a killjoy from Warriors. I tried to stop the conflict, but the green-haired individual gave me a black eye (Ouch). They were eventually restrained, and we were able to communicate with the person (who was an underground killjoy and was unfamiliar with the Warriors) that the killjoys they were fighting were not BLI. The white suits and fake Drac masks are only a disguise (and a clever one! I love them). The person only spoke Korean. Thankfully, Warriors have killjoys from all languages and walks of life, so we were able to translate.

I think that person likes me now. They asked me about a prescription of ADHD medication. I'm working on that too, so hold your skeleton horses.

I've been spending some time up on Melancholy Hill, and I've realized something. I was nearby, and a lot younger, when the news got around that the Fabulous Four died. I was about 7 years old, when I ran by, seeing all the gunshots. My young brain thought I could be a superhero and... save my older brother from juvenile hall. But, I couldn't. When I got there, I heard screaming about the Fab Four being killed. A killjoy van was driving away... but... I never saw the bodies. My young brain thought that the Boys had been dragged off.. but there was no blood. Not a single trace of them, other than the holes in the wall and the broken glass and that wretched man Korse grinning gleefully (God, he's like Hitler).

Anyways, back to the straightforward and less-depressing news!

I've found a new Killjoy, and she's rooming with me! Her name is Battery Kat, and when she was younger, she was caught in the crossfire of the Helium Wars, so much so that parts of her left ear and eyebrow are missing. She still wears her dad's dog tags, and they're covered in trinkets she finds on the streets, from bottle caps to beads and everything in between.

Love that girl.

As one firefighter makes a dangerous rescue, could he be part of Firehouse 51? Plus another rescue is made to bring back a former member. Here's a recap! As Firehouse 51 gets a call of a man hanging off his apartment building; a candidate from another firehouse makes a dangerous rescue that not only gives Casey an idea to pick for Truck 81 but Boden won't approve it. As Casey gives Boden the reasons why; it isn't enough until Severide, after apologizing for Boden's boat, talks to him about how he changed him when he was a daring young firefighter. After that, Casey and Severide talk with Gallo, the candidate, about what he'll be doing and soon after Gallo talks to both them and Boden and agrees to come aborad. Hermann is in trouble as he got word from Otis' brothers that they won't invest Otis's shares in Molly's. Trying to find a way, he asked Mouch but he declines. When Trudy comes in, it's not pretty as she complains about the cherries being used. As all seemed lost, Mouch comes through with a check to buy out Otis' share. But it's not only Mouch but also Trudy that's part of it too. Oh boy! Get ready for an upgrade. Forster and her new partner, Collins, isn't doing too well. When she tries to bond with him, he thinks that she's hitting on him. After a call when a little girl is having an allergic reaction that proves to be a tick bite. But after Forster had had it with him and fired him. Quickly she and Kidd go after Brett, who wasn't having the best of time at Fowlerton. But just as soon as they get there, Brett walks out and has her bags packed ready to go, this comes after she broke things off with The Chaplin. Brett's coming home!!! Also, Cruz is selling his apartment due to not only costing too much for one person, but the memories of Otis was getting too painful. Even Chloe has been seeing it and asked Mouch for advice; which was just to be there for him. And after the good news with Hermann, he gives Ritter better news that he's coming back on his team again but also learned that Ritter has a boyfriend and he's not a vegan. "A Real Shot in the Arm" was very good. You could feel that this episode carried the weight of the loss of Otis, which was powerful. The drama between Casey and Boden was very good and something that we haven't seen in awhile and I love it. But mainly from this episode, Brett is coming home!!! YEAH!! I guess she's so used to the adrenaline of Chicago living. Plus even though she broke it off with The Chaplin and might take it easy from dating, will she persuade to ask Casey out on a date? The writing was good along with character development, for one character: Ritter. Overall, I give this episode an 8.5/10.

"Badlands"

On Brett's first day back at 51; she and Foster deal with a kid who's been attacked. Plus Boden finds out the truth about Gallos. Here's a recap! It's Brett's first day and coming back to 51 everyone gives her a nice welcome back surprise. Glad to be back, Brett and Foster get a call of an injured kid, Issac, at a correctional facility, but when they get there they get stopped by the high power guard. Both Brett and Foster get a bad fab from the kid and looks into what's been going on. After telling Boden about it, they see that the facility were quickly on the defense of what happened. They go to talk with the attorney that represented Issac, but got nothing from him. But instead talked with a social worker, who worked with Issac. The three worked together to confront the boss of the facility and the officer, but as Issac back off his statement, he started telling what the officer really does and gets everyone to talk too, which puts the officer in a bad position. Firehouse 51 has gotten a new upgrade, but it's not going so good. Of course, it pisses off Herrmann but soon gets all on everyone's nerve. But yeah at least Casey got a hot date along with it so it's not all that bad. But it really was and when the alarms go off for nothin, Boden breaks the machine while Casey's hot date comes back mad and tells him to lose her number. While Boden had a headache, he still has doubts about Gallos and after listening to his story and seeing how he and Casey saved a little girl at an amusement park. He learns the truth that he and another firehouse team saved Gallos a long time ago and ever since the kid has been coming around their firehouse. Wow, right? "Badlands" was a very good episode and seeing Brett back at Firehouse 51 was awesome! The story was very good with character development with Boden and Gallos. Plus I ate the Casey and Severide scenes up. I loved it. Fun and awkwardly brilliant. Overall, I give this episode a 9/10. You can catch Chicago Fire in the epic three-hour #OneChicago Crossover event on Wednesday, Oct. 16th at 8/7c on NBC.

Samsung to expedite chip plant investments after chief's parole

Samsung Group, the country's largest conglomerate, is likely to ramp up its investment in chip plants amid the global shortage and merger and acquisition (M&A) with the parole of its leader despite controversy over the legitimacy, industry insiders said on Monday.

The parole board under the justice ministry approved Lee Jae-yong's release from jail after hours of review, making him free from Friday.

The Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman has been behind bars since January after he was sentenced to 2 1/2 years in prison by the Seoul High Court in a retrial of a bribery case involving former President Park Geun-hye.

Lee's parole comes at a time when Samsung is reviewing its investment and M&A plans. With the tech giant's top decision maker soon to be released, industry observers expect that Samsung will speed up its major business plans in the near future, reports Yonhap news agency.

Samsung Electronics, the world's largest memory chip and smartphone vendor, is currently looking to build a $17 billion foundry fab in the US, but has yet to decide its location.

Sites in Texas, Arizona and New York have been mentioned as candidates, but the company is reportedly still negotiating with municipal authorities over incentives for a new chip facility.

The decision on the US chip plant is critical as Samsung's rival companies are moving ahead to expand their production capacities amid global chip shortages.

Tony was more than happy to offer the girl her old room back at the compound after the incident. (Y/N) tried her very best to not be the cause of worry for the world’s mightiest heroes and would force a smile in the little times she left her room.

The captain, although an excellent team leader and planner, was quite lacking in the department of consoling people. For the first week, he paced around in front of (Y/N)’s room, thinking if it was appropriate for him to enter. Little did he know, (Y/N) always knew he was out there. The shadow his figure has cast was visible from the tiny slit below her door. (Y/N) wanted to let Steve know she was alright, that he shouldn’t worry about her but couldn’t bring herself to, or she would break down in front of him yet again. So the girl kept her eyes at the shadow beneath her door, the sight offering her a sort of comfort she craved.

Two weeks in was when (Y/N) invited the pacing soldier in. They built blanket forts, had Disney marathons and laid beside each other during the long nights with sleep evading them both. The smile on (Y/N)’s face was small, her eyes still held deep sadness but it was a smile nonetheless, a smile Steve has dearly missed.

A month was what it took for (Y/N) to request to resume working as Pepper’s assistant. She needed to feel wanted and important and her job was what would give her that. As Pepper’s assistant, and a good one at that, it did not escape (Y/N) knowledge that her boss and her nosy husband was trying to locate her runaway groom. The girl steers clear of any information containing any details of Bucky like a plague, not wanting to face something she isn’t ready for yet.

Six months, coupled with the care, concern, and laughter of her Avenger friends and the comforting presence of a certain Steve Rogers was what it took for her to smile genuinely again. She joined movie nights, was more than happy to go shopping with Natasha and Wanda and found joy in volunteering at the animal shelter with Steve. Slowly, she started to realize that if she wasn’t what Bucky was looking for, their marriage would have ended up in shambles even if he didn’t leave her at the altar - she was coming to an understanding, an acceptance.

Steve was not one to forget as easily as (Y/N) is, neither is any of the Avengers. Bucky was like a phantom that did not want to be found. That is until they noticed a certain lab technician’s resignation straight after the fateful wedding day. Natasha caught on with it the very moment her eyes picked up on the information and started tracking her instead.

In no time, Bucky was found. The super soldier was living in the lab technician’s rented apartment in a relatively quiet area of Brooklyn. Finding out this information almost sent Natasha and Wanda into a frenzy and was only stopped when they saw the look in Steve’s eyes. From the look in his eyes, the two Avengers could tell this was not their battle to fight - Steve was not going to let Bucky get away with this.

On the very same day, the government officials have gotten ahold of the very information Natasha has attained earlier. An emergency meeting was called with Steve and Tony as Avenger’s representative. The officials were not happy that The Winter Soldier was out and about in Brooklyn and was not secured in the Avengers facility as agreed upon.

A frustrated Steve Rogers and Tony Stark stalked out of the conference room and was met with the entire team sitting in the common room waiting for news.

“I’m sorry (Y/N). We’ve got to bring Barnes back here. Or the Avengers can officially retire this time.” Tony said with a tone of distaste.

Silence blanketed the room until Wanda let out a cry of disagreement and the group yelled out their displeasure following which.

“This is bullshit! How could they?!”

“Do they know what that shit head Barnes did?! Do they?!”

“For God’s sake, how many times are they going to use the stupid retirement threat?!”

The noises of dissent flooded the common room until they heard a little murmur.

“Yeah, okay.” said (Y/N), a sort of tired acceptance painting her features.

The room fell into silence once again. Steve made his way to the couch she was sitting on and enveloped her in a hug, allowing her to bury her face into his neck as she slowly wrapped her arms around his waist.

The team sent Vision to go inform Bucky about the news of his need to return. The android would not act out based on his emotions and this could not be guaranteed if anyone else on the team was engaged in this godforsaken task.

A day before Bucky was set to return, (Y/N) called for a meeting in the common room. Decked in Steve’s sweater she’d stole when she was doing laundry, a pair of black yoga pants, the girl settled herself on a lover’s couch as she waited for the group to pile in. Steve was just about to claim the seat beside her when Natasha and Wanda stole it, curling their arms with (Y/N)’s, as they cuddled together. Natasha threw Steve a smirk and Wanda topped it off with a wink, much to the captain’s frustration.

“Okay, now that everyone is here. My announcement is really simple. When Buc- James comes back tomorrow, no one is to throw him dirty looks, snide comments or give him a hard time about what has happened alright?” she said, a look of seriousness etched on her face.

Her announcement was met with choruses of disdain and no doubt Tony was the loudest.

Quietening the heroes down with a loud clap, she continued, “This is about James and I. And I’ve come to understand that what he needs is not me. His actions may have been despicable, to say the least, but what is done is done. I’ll never be the same (Y/N) and we will never be the same couple again. He’s found what he needed. What I am not, and will never be.”

Seeing the look of astonishment on their faces, she explained, “Yes, I know that everyone in the tower except for Vision and I have been actively looking for James. And I also know that he’s staying with the lab technician.”

“I can’t say I’m okay with him or that I’ll ever really be okay with him. And I’m not giving up my job or my loved ones, well you lot, just because he’s moving back in with her. What I would truly appreciate, is if everyone could at least be civil with the man. I don’t usually ask for much, so please, for me?” she pleaded, her eyes rimmed red.

“Yeah doll, anything you need, Anything at all.” was Steve’s reply.

The lift stopped at common room level as Bucky stepped out looking wary of what was to greet him. Behind him was a girl the Avengers recognized as Jenny the lab tech.

Vision and Clint were the only two people that were present in the common room as Bucky came in. Clint gave the man a half-hearted greeting and a light shake of hand as he stalked off, leaving Vision to tend to the soldier.

A passing Tony threw a look at Bucky and the girl beside him and said, “(Y/N) said we ought to be civil with you. But I was never one to follow instructions. So don’t expect me to welcome you with open arms. Your room is right next to your old one with (Y/N). She’s staying in that one now so its off-limits to you as per instructed to FRIDAY. I’m shifting you and your little lab tech to the furthest possible room once renovations are done. Also, that lab tech is no longer on Stark’s payroll. Pepper’s decision. I’m only letting her into my building because (Y/N) the sweetest and most naive girl I’ve ever met and she insisted.”

Tony threw the pair the dirtiest look he could muster and made his way back to his lab.

Just as Bucky and his plus one were about to open the door to their room, (Y/N)’s room door swung open. Bucky’s heartbeat became erratic as he braced himself to face the girl.

And much to his surprise, he was met with a messy hair Steve decked out in his loungewear. Their eyes met; Steve’s was one of betrayal and anger and Bucky’s held guilt and confusion.

Why is Steve coming out of (Y/N)’s room? What is going on?

Just as Bucky was about to voice out his question, his ears picked up a familiar soft voice.

“Steve! The movie is starting and I need you as my space heater! Hurry up!”

It was an odd moment for the two super soldiers.

Steve felt a sense of pride and glee.

And Bucky?

Bucky felt a tiny nick in his chest. And what he did not know, was that this tiny nick was the start of his crumbling heart.
