Soon the three companions found themselves in a ring of horsemen ...
... moving in a running circle, up the hill-slope behind them and down, round and round them, and drawing ever inwards. Aragorn stood silent, and the other two sat without moving, wondering what way things would turn.
Tumblr media
Without a word or cry, suddenly, the Riders halted. A thicket of spears were pointed towards the strangers; and some of the horsemen had bows in hand, and their arrows were already fitted to the string. Then one rode forward, a tall man, taller than all the rest; from his helm as a crest a white horsetail flowed. He advanced until the point of his spear was within a foot of Aragorn's breast. Aragorn did not stir.
'Who are you, and what are you doing in this land?' said the Rider, using the Common Speech of the West, in manner and tone like to the speech of Boromir, Man of Gondor.
Tumblr media
'I am called Strider,' answered Aragorn. 'I came out of the North. I am hunting Orcs.'
The Rider leaped from his horse. Giving his spear to another who rode up and dismounted at his side, he drew his sword and stood face to face with Aragorn, surveying him keenly, and not without wonder. At length he spoke again.
Tumblr media
'At first I thought that you yourselves were Orcs,' he said; 'but now I see that it is not so. Indeed you know little of Orcs, if you go hunting them in this fashion. They were swift and well-armed, and they were many. You would have changed from hunters to prey, if ever you had overtaken them. But there is something strange about you, Strider.' He bent his clear bright eyes again upon the Ranger. 'That is no name for a Man that you give. And strange too is your raiment. Have you sprung out of the grass? How did you escape our sight? Are you elvish folk?'

The vast majority of Eomer’s “Men”:
Tumblr media
My headcanon is that due to the rural nature of Rohan and its overall decline, a huge number of the Rohirrim were actually women in disguise, not just Eowyn. And that it was an open secret that only the royal line didn’t know about that local lords fielded women riders to bolster their dwindling numbers

“Then hope unlooked-for came so suddenly to Eomer's heart, and with it the bite of care and fear renewed, that he said no more, but turned and went swiftly from the hall.”
The challenge is now complete! It was really fun and I am happy it ‘forced’ me to draw new characters. Eomer won the poll so he got to complete the collection ✨

so i have a little nonsense theory about the name Dernhelm, the name used by Eowyn when she rides with the Rohirrim to Gondor in The Return of the King.
just a couple things i noticed on my read through:
the prefix 'dern' means secret or hidden (also seen in Derndingle, the location of the Entmoot).
the captain, Elfhelm, and the rest of the company 'Dernhelm' was riding with ignored her, and she rarely spoke.
the way its described in the book its implied that the captain and company were simply turning a blind eye to her coming along, however, i think that its unlikely that the men of Rohan would allow beloved Eowyn to ride to war and likely death, especially when she was supposed to be governing the people left behind in Meduseld- surely at least ONE would disagree, and then the jig would be up. additionally, why Dernhelm? its a good name, but with people who understand the meaning of the words, you might as well be calling yourself something like sneaky bill.
so here's my extravagant, unnecessary and probably incorrect proposition: the name Dernhelm is a mantle that anyone can take up when they dont want the trappings of their old name. maybe they did things in the past that they arent proud of, or maybe their family name has been somehow dishonoured, or maybe even they dont want their actions in the upcoming battle to be associated with themselves. in any case, Dernhelm is simply a name that anyone can use, and people will politely act like they do not exist, and not try to learn the name or the face behind the helm. Eowyn takes up the mantle, and can fade into the company of riders unchallenged

Happy Friday! We’re trying something new here, which is posting some of my background head canons that underpin my Rohan fics, starting with How Does Rohan’s Military Work?
—The éored is the basic unit of Rohan’s army, and éoreds are geographically organized. Each town or settlement should have at least one (larger towns/cities have more than one), drawing from the population of that town and the surrounding lands. If a particular area does not have a sufficient population to sustain an independent éored, adjoining communities pool together. One éored = 120 riders in full status.
—Some of the éoreds trace their history back to the time of Eorl and the first arrival of the Rohirrim in Rohan. Others are newer, added as the population increased over time and the army needed to expand. They have distinctive personalities/cultures based on local conditions and their leaders, and some are specialized in particular skills (the mountain-based éoreds, for example, excel at cold-weather combat).
—Every year, the 15-year-olds of each community are put through an apprenticeship in the basic skills needed to be an effective éored member: horsemanship, weapons usage, basic military strategy. (Many of the teens are already fairly proficient riders and fighters because they learn from their parents, but that’s informally done. Some of the dads go full on Stage Parent (Stable Parent?) in terms of trying to make sure their kid is way better than everyone else, and this can cause resentment/estrangement as it does in the real world.)
—The whole apprenticeship/qualification process is overseen by a senior leader of the local éored whose job is selection and training of new members (the “skill master”). The apprenticeship culminates in a qualification test at the end of the year. Those who meet the standards are appointed junior members of that community’s éored. In towns with multiple éoreds, the skill masters run the process collectively and decide how to divide the qualifying members between them.
—If you fail to qualify, you can try again in a future year. Those who pass spend the next few years continuing to learn at the side of their éored-mates. Each éored’s captain decides when a junior member has sufficiently developed to be given full rider status.
—There are a number of official jobs within each éored that have leadership status. These include skill master, horse master, weapons master, banner bearer and captain (the official title of an éored’s captain is “marshal” but that can be confusing in light of the other, higher position of Marshal of the Mark, so I’m just using captain here). These positions are filled from within each éored whenever they become vacant due to death, retirement, etc.
—Moving between éoreds is extremely rare and generally only happens when the population change in an area requires a reordering of the éoreds (adding or subtracting). This is because members want to stay close to their original geographic base (this is where their families’ ancestral lands are, after all) and also because it’s better for group cohesion to keep consistent memberships.
—Each éored has a specific tattoo design that all members get on their shoulder or bicep when first appointed. The designs vary widely, but they’re meant to be small and relatively simple. These serve both to reinforce group cohesion and also as a means of non-written identification for dead or wounded soldiers (i.e., a dead soldier can be returned to his people based on his éored mark even if the deceased is unknown to the person finding the body).
—In Edoras, Helm’s Deep and Aldburg, there is one specific éored each that is designated to the service of a Marshal of the Mark (First/King’s Marshal in Edoras, Second/West-mark Marshal in Helm’s Deep and Third/East-mark Marshal in Aldburg). These are generally given the strongest and best rider candidates from their cities each year, and they are viewed as more prestigious than the other éoreds.
—Because almost all éored leadership is promoted from within but the Marshals of the Mark are chosen from across Rohan, getting appointed to one of the Marshal of the Mark positions is one of the only ways that anyone moves between éoreds (beyond those specified above based on population changes). If you are one of those people, you would then have multiple éored tattoos. To avoid confusion, some defining mark is made to clarify which is current (a line through the old one, or some extra distinguishing feature added to the new one).
—Any other movement between éoreds not covered above can only be done with the consent of the presiding Marshal of the Mark, and approval is given in only the most unique circumstances.
—Edit: Should have made this clearer initially: The captain of each éored has a lot of autonomy over their own crew (though in cities with more than one, the senior captain plays a coordinating role among them). But formally they take direction from the relevant Marshal of the Mark, and those 3 take direction from the king.
So, there it is. I’m posting this on the suggestion of the lovely @sotwk and I picked this topic to start because it’s one that she and I have been discussing (also, I found my Google doc with all the details so this is a more coherent laying out of things than what I pulled from the top of my head earlier!).
I love ALL of this stuff and am not offended at all by people who have diverging or conflicting ideas so please feel free to share if anyone is so inspired!

What doom do you bring out of the North?
'The doom of choice,' said Aragorn. 'You may say this to Théoden son of Thengel: open war lies before him, with Sauron or against him. None may live now as they have lived, and few shall keep what they call their own. But of these great matters we will speak later. If chance allows, I will come myself to the king. Now I am in great need, and I ask for help, or at least for tidings. You heard that we are pursuing an orc-host that carried off our friends. What can you tell us?'
Tumblr media
'That you need not pursue them further,' said Éomer. 'The Orcs are destroyed.'
'And our friends?'
'We found none but Orcs.'
'But that is strange indeed,' said Aragorn. 'Did you search the slain? Were there no bodies other than those of orc-kind? They would be small. Only children to your eyes, unshod but clad in grey.'
'There were no dwarves nor children,' said Éomer. 'We counted all the slain and despoiled them, and then we piled the carcases and burned them, as is our custom. The ashes are smoking still.'
Tumblr media
'We do not speak of dwarves or children,' said Gimli. 'Our friends were hobbits.'
'Hobbits?' said Éomer. 'And what may they be? It is a strange name.'
'A strange name for a strange folk,' said Gimli. 'But these were very dear to us. It seems that you have heard in Rohan of the words that troubled Minas Tirith. They spoke of the Halfling. These hobbits are Halflings.'
'Halflings!' laughed the Rider that stood beside Éomer. 'Halflings! But they are only a little people in old songs and children's tales out of the North. Do we walk in legends or on the green earth in the daylight?'
'A man may do both,' said Aragorn. 'For not we but those who come after will make the legends of our time. The green earth, say you? That is a mighty matter of legend, though you tread it under the light of day!'
.....
Tumblr media
'Scouts warned me of the orc-host coming down out of the East Wall three nights ago, ' he said. Among them they reported that some bore the white badges of Saruman. So suspecting what I most fear, a league between Orthanc and the Dark Tower, I led forth my éored, men of my own household; and we overtook the Orcs at nightfall two days ago, near to the borders of the Entwood. There we surrounded them, and gave battle yesterday at dawn. Fifteen of my men I lost, and twelve horses alas! For the Orcs were greater in number than we counted on. Others joined them. coming out of the East across the Great River: their trail is plain to see a little north of this spot. And others, too, came out of the forest. Great Orcs, who also bore the White Hand of Isengard: that kind is stronger and more fell than all others.
Tumblr media
'Nonetheless we put an end to them. But we have been too long away. We are needed south and west. Will you not come? There are spare horses as you see. There is work for the Sword to do. Yes, and we could find a use for Gimli's axe and the bow of Legolas, if they will pardon my rash words concerning the Lady of the Wood. I spoke only as do all men in my land, and I would gladly learn better.'
'I thank you for your fair words,' said Aragorn, 'and my heart desires to come with you; but I cannot desert my friends while hope remains.'
Tumblr media
'Hope does not remain,' said Éomer. 'You will not find your friends on the North-borders.'
'Yet my friends are not behind. We found a clear token not far from the East Wall that one at least of them was still alive there. But between the wall and the downs we have found no other trace of them, and no trail has turned aside, this way or that, unless my skill has wholly left me.'
'Then what do you think has become of them?'
Tumblr media
'I do not know. They may have been slain and burned among the Orcs; but that you will say cannot be, and I do not fear it. I can only think that they were carried off into the forest before the battle, even before you encircled your foes, maybe. Can you swear that none escaped your net in such a way?'
'I would swear that no Orc escaped after we sighted them,' said Éomer. 'We reached the forest-eaves before them, and if after that any living thing broke through our ring, then it was no Orc and had some elvish power.'
Tumblr media
'Our friends were attired even as we are,' said Aragorn; 'and you passed us by under the full light of day.'
'I had forgotten that,' said Éomer. 'It is hard to be sure of anything among so many marvels. The world is all grown strange. Elf and Dwarf in company walk in our daily fields; and folk speak with the Lady of the Wood and yet live; and the Sword comes back to war that was broken in the long ages ere the fathers of our fathers rode into the Mark! How shall a man judge what to do in such times?'
