Ruby Gillman and what its reception showcases what's wrong with children's media today
Here is the link to the specific reblog that contains both a production fantheory about Chelsea and my initial review for anyone interested in that: https://www.tumblr.com/tetsunabouquet/722833498719879168/alright-considering-the-massive-heat-of-the-past?source=share Alright, as an aspiring children's author and as someone studying writing classes with children's literature as the particular focus, I have made a couple of posts about my issues with children's media already, or rather, the problems with the people making and critqueing it. Ruby Gillman's reception, like the reviews from critics and people who dislike the movie alike, actually showcases multiple examples of what makes so many movies/shows aimed at children or the family, poor nowadays: Ruby has been critiqued for being 'too cute', and that they should just 'embrace the monster'. Only this doesn't work when young children are also part of the target demographic. There's a reason to why bad guys are written to be ugly, and why good guys are written to be good looking: It's that the brain of the average child isn't developped enough to understand nuance. The younger the child, the more you have to REMOVE nuance. That's also why, when Queen Nerissa/Chelsea becomes all-powerful, she becomes ugly. It's because she's the bad guy in that moment. It's why she lacks a sympathetic backstory, as we see with a lot of villains nowadays. It's because, again, the more nuance there is to the character, the less a child will actually understand the character. It's why the Gillmans claim they're from Canada: because I've seen enough of American media to know Canadians are practically treated like another species. To a child, this explanation would actually somewhat work, especially to a 6 year old or younger The adults screaming about that and how anyone can see Ruby isn't human are thinking too much like adults. They don't try to see it from a child's perspective, and that's the main core to all the problems behind children's media nowadays: They don't 'dumb' themselves down enough to the perspective of a young child. When watching the movie, I definitely felt like the Gillman family was also close to its ideal target demographic: families with daughters ranged between 10-13 and younger siblings of about 5+ years old. And it did well for a movie aimed at such a group. It lacked enough nuance for young kids to understand, and the theme of womanhood would speak to pre-adolescent girls. Also, the way the media keeps comparing this to Turning Red because they were both magical metaphors for womanhood and female puberty and speaks of the generations of womanhood is annoying. Are you telling me that with the shitload of movies that America produce per year alone, they never produced 2 animated movies dealing with coming of age and manhood in the span of 16 months? This speaks once again, of how men have difficulty relating to female struggles and will hate on a movie centering girls growing up, opposed to how women have little to no difficulty symphatizing and relating to movies of boys growing up. Boys only want male protagonists, whilst we women can care less. The moment we get even more then one animated movie dealing with the idea of female puberty in the span of two years, the press immediately descends to pit one movie against another. Oh my god, imagine being that pathetic. That wouldn't be me.

Summary: Edward Nashton, y/n's loving boyfriend, is the sweetest partner that anyone could ever have. He is always spoiling them and treating them like royalty. Y/n looks up to Edward so much, always wanting to be around him, following him everywhere. It's obvious that Edward loves how dependent they are of him. Growing up, Edward wasn't able to be happy and loved, so he loves that he can make y/n feel happy and loved. And, being depended on, well it made him feel loved and wanted.

It depends on how well it's received.)

Edward and y/n were like that one couple you see at the fair. Holding hands constantly, feeding each other cotton candy, and winning each other prizes at the games. They were your typical couple. Well, at least that's what they looked like. Actually, correction, that's what Edward looked like. Everyone who knew Edward, even if they weren't friends with him, knew that he was one of the nerdiest, dorkiest, and strangest people in Gotham. His fascination with riddles, puzzles, and games ostracized him from everyone he met. Sure, he had a FEW friends, but he hadn't talked to them since he left the orphanage. He was your stereotypical nerd that one would see in a Disney Channel movie. Meanwhile, his partner of almost 2 years, y/n, was the complete opposite of him. Again, it was like something you would see in a movie. Two people who are complete opposites turn into star-crossed lovers, destined to be together. And that's exactly what they were. Y/n was a bright and bubbly person. They were extremely friendly, outgoing, absolutely breathtaking, and yet they were in love with Edward. It was quite romantic, actually. The two of them met at a library when they ran into each other. Edward had a book about forensics and y/n had a book about poetry. Things picked up from there and all of a sudden they had been dating for 2 years. Not only was Edward Nashton a thoughtful, loving, and loyal partner...he also made things very interesting in their relationship. It caught y/n off guard at first, but it didn't take them long to find it absolutely hot and fun. They would be lying if they said they didn't love it.
~
Edward sat at the desk in the bedroom he shared with his partner. His hair was messy and still partially damp from the shower he had taken not long ago. His white t-shirt was stained with drops of water, making small parts of his clothing slightly see-through. He had a pair of black sweats on, three green question marks sewed onto one of the pockets, a customization he did himself. Rain trickled down the window of the bedroom, the sound becoming a soothing pattern to the lanky man. It was around 8 o'clock at night, the sun had already set and the stars were scattering throughout the sky. Groaning, Edward stretched his arms out, being careful not to bump the empty plate that once had his dinner on it off of the desk. Deciding he needed a break from his work, he got up and grabbed the plate. The sound of the bedroom door opening made y/n's head turn away from the T.V in the living room and focused instead on their boyfriend closing the door behind him. Y/n squealed, getting on their knees on the couch, hands on the back of it as they watched him walk.
"Are you done?!" They asked excitedly.
Edward smiled slightly as he walked by the couch, shaking his head. Y/n groaned and slumped back down, melting into the cushions. The colors of the T.V flashed across their face as they pulled a blanket over themself. Their boyfriend rinsed his plate, cleaned it, dried it, and then put it back in the cabinet it belonged in. Mumbling to himself, he walked out of the kitchen, about to pass the couch. Y/n looked over their shoulder, seeing that his pants were sagging slightly. They chuckled lightly, causing him to slow down walking.
"Your pants are falling down you heathen." They commented.
Edward looked down, seeing that they were right. He chuckled as well, pulling them up and tying the drawstring in a bow. Reaching over, he ruffled y/n's hair, causing them to huff.
"Thanks, now stop looking at my ass. I need to get back to work." He smirked, walking back into the bedroom.
Y/n smiled, but it faded once the door closed. It had been hours since Edward started working. He didn't usually work from home so it was a new thing for them both. Yeah, it was only going to be for today, but it still sucked. The two of them had barely talked all day and it made y/n sad. They were sure it made Edward sad as well. Y/n so desperately wanted to go in there and pull him out of the room. This was usually the time that the two of them would watch a movie together, but now y/n was doing that alone. Sighing, they grabbed the remote and paused the movie before setting it back down on the coffee table. They stood up from the couch, walking slowly to the bedroom door. Even though they had been dating for 2 years y/n knocked on the door, as the two of them still respected their privacy and need for alone time. A muffled 'come in' came from behind the door. Opening it up, they stepped inside and closed it behind them. Edward was sitting in the chair in front of his desk, files spread on the surface and his laptop open before him. Y/n walked up next to the desk, hands in front of them, fidgeting with their fingers. Edward continued to work, waiting for y/n to say something. When they didn't he sighed, placing his pen down and looking up, turning the chair to face them.
"Is something wrong, cara mia?" He asked, noticing their meek expression.
"Um, w-when are you going to be done...?" They asked, voice soft.
Edward groaned breathily, pinching the bridge of his nose. His hands trailed to his hair, running his fingers through the slightly damp locks. He picked up a packet on his desk, flipping through the pages so y/n could see the work he had to do. A shaky laugh left his throat as he dropped the stapled papers back on the desk.
"I still have this packet to do, y/n. I need to get this done before work tomorrow." He stated.
"I know, but I've barely seen you all day..." They mumbled.
"Yes, I know and I'm sorry. But, my office building had a pipe burst, so we had to work from home. You know this. I can't do anything about it."
Y/n huffed, crossing their arms over their chest.
"Yeah, you're never able to do shit about anything..." They grumbled.
Edward raised an eyebrow, straightening his posture. He grabbed the pen on the desk, flipping it between his fingers. His legs were slightly spread, the drawstrings of his sweats falling between his legs slightly. The gaze he held on y/n was piercing and was sure to make anyone uncomfortable.
"And what exactly is that supposed to mean?" He asked, challengingly.
Y/n looked down at the ground, sighing. They fidgeted with the hem of their shirt. Edward watched them, their nail polish shining from the light of the lamp on his desk.
"Sorry, I don't know what I meant by that. I just missed you today..." They sniffled, tears threatening to spill.
Edward's gaze softened upon hearing them whine. He placed the pen back on the desk and pushed his chair away slightly from the desk. Holding out a hand, he waiting for y/n to take it. When they did, he pulled them close to him, looking up into their eyes. A small tear trailed down y/n's face, making him frown. Using his thumb, he wiped it away, smearing it across their cheek.
"You poor thing. It makes me so sad to see you cry, pet." He hummed, rubbing his thumb over their knuckles.
He looked back to his laptop, sighing deeply. It was true, he really needed to get his work done. But, on the other hand, his love was gently crying before him. Biting on his bottom lip, he nodded softly.
"Ok, why don't you stay in here with me? You have to be quiet though, I need to focus." He suggested.
Y/n cheered up instantly, wiping away whatever tears were left on their face. Edward chuckled, rolling his eyes at the sudden change in demeanor.
"Huh, was that all an act to get me to let you stay with me?" He asked.
"No it wasn't, I'm just happy I can stay!" They giggled.
"Ok then, well if you want to get in bed you c-"
Edward was interrupted by y/n pushing his chair away slightly. Grabbing a pillow and a blanket off the bed, they placed the pillow on the floor right below Edward's desk. Y/n crawled on the floor and sat on the pillow, wrapping the blanket around their body. He scoffed playfully, pulling his chair back up to the desk. Y/n rested their chin on his knee, looking up at him from under the desk.
"Comfy down there?" He asked, typing on his keyboard.
Y/n reached a hand up, giving a thumbs up to him. Smiling, he put a hand down and rubbed the top of y/n's head. His fingers worked at their scalp gently, giving a simple yet effective massage. Y/n sighed happily, closing their eyes as they enjoyed the touch of their lover. The sound of his pen scribbled away at papers, grumbling to himself when he made a mistake. Occasionally, he would look down under the desk, checking up on y/n. He knew that they wanted to be close to him, but the position they were sitting in would most definitely end up with their legs going numb.
~
After another hour, Edward had finished up his work, sighing in relief as he closed his laptop. Groaning softly, he stretched his back out, reaching his arms up into the air. He grabbed the armrests of the chair, about to pull away from the desk. However, the pressure of y/n's chin on his knee caused him to stop. He leaned his head back, mouthing 'fuck' as he thought about what to do next. Slowly, he reached down and cupped y/n's face with his hands. Pushing the chair away with his foot, he knelt down to the ground. Their eyes were closed, cheeks slightly pink from the warmth of the blanket. Smiling to himself, he gently brought y/n's head to the ground, letting it rest on the pillow. He stood back up, picking up the files off the desk and organizing them. Making sure to stay quiet, he left the bedroom and put the papers in his work bag. Before going back into the bedroom, he did a quick walk-around of the apartment, making sure everything was turned off and everything was locked up. Once he confirmed that, he went back to make the bed. He pulled the covers down and turned on the lamp that sat on his nightstand. Glancing down at y/n, he noticed that they were stirring. He knew they couldn't stay on the ground the entire night, even if they looked absolutely adorable doing so. He bent down again, brushing y/n's face with his thumb. Grunting softly, y/n's eyes fluttered open, heavy and tired.
"No wonder you were so quiet, you fell asleep down there. You must be pretty sleepy, huh?" He asked, dragging his thumb down their bottom lip.
Y/n nodded softly, crawling out from under the desk. They grabbed the pillow and the blanket, holding them in their arms as they stood up. Edward smiled at them, watching them put the stuff back on the bed. As y/n sat on the bed, they looked at Edward. Not wanting to wait from him to get in bed, they grabbed his wrist and yanked him towards them. Chuckling, he got under the covers, y/n instantly crawling on top of him after. He scooted up a little bit, head propped up slightly against the pillow. Y/n's face was nuzzled into the fabric of his shirt, thighs straddling his left leg. He sighed, petting y/n's head and stroking their hair.
"Cara mia, I'm sorry for not giving you much attention today." He admitted.
"S' ok, sir. You had t' work..." They mumbled.
"Tomorrow you can follow me around like the good puppy you are, hm? How's that sound? We can even watch a movie together tomorrow night." He cooed, planting a kiss on the top of their head.
"Sounds s' good..." Y/n replied, half asleep.
"Good night, angel."
"Night E..Ed..."
Edward smiled to himself as y/n fell asleep, rubbing their back as he closed his eyes. The weight of their body on his chest served as a weighted blanket, lulling him into his own slumber. His chest heaved gently, rocking y/n's body like a ship at sea. The waves of his breath crashing through the night.
~
The sun peered through the curtains of the bedroom window, the blinds slightly open. Warmth spread over y/n's face, causing them to stir in their slumber. As the light grew, y/n turned over, grabbing a pillow and covering their face. Y/n's eyes grew heavy once again, feeling themself go back to sleep, only to be awoken by the alarm on their phone. Groaning, they sat up in their bed, shielding their eyes from the sun. Their pupils dilated, adjusting to the morning. A yawn escaped their lips, eyes squinting shut. Y/n looked to their left, waking up instantly when they realized Edward wasn't next to them. They shot out of bed, grabbing the bathrobe Edward bought for them at the mall. Wrapping it around their body, y/n stumbled out of the bedroom and into the living room. Expectantly, they looked around for their boyfriend, but to no avail. Sadly, they walked into the kitchen, hoping that Edward had made them a lunch. Y/n knew they were spoiled and they brought it to his attention many times.
'Edward, you spoil me too much! You don't have to do that, I can take care of myself. You don't have to spoil me to make me stay with you. I love you with or without the special treatments.'
It was true. Y/n was absolutely in love with him and it wasn't because of the special treatment. It was because he was funny, smart, handsome, and extremely sweet. Oh, but he always gave the same answer, an extremely poetic one.
'I know that, my love. But, I consider myself to be the luckiest man in this world with you as my partner. I count my blessings everyday, y/n. So, why would I not spoil you? Why would I not shower you with love every moment I breathe? The day I stop spoiling you is the day that I die, my dear. And even then, I will still try to find a way to give you my adoration.'
He was a romantic at his core underneath his nerdy exterior. And if y/n was being honest, he was also a freaky and kinky fucker underneath as well. It was really amusing to y/n. When they first saw Edward, they never would have imagined how much of a freak he was in the sheets, even out of the sheets. But, it's not like they didn't like it. Hell, they loved it.
"Oh, what's this?" They asked themself.
On the door of the fridge was a big green sticky note, Edward's favorite color. Grabbing it, y/n looked it over. As they read it, they opened up the fridge. Lo and behold, a brown paper bag was in the fridge with their name written on it. Well, not their name, but one of Edward's nicknames for them. Puppy. It suited them really well, seeing as how they loved to follow him around and craved his attention and love.
'Good morning sweetheart,
I wanted to kiss you goodbye before I left for work, but you looked so peaceful in your sleep. I did not want to wake you from the blissful dream you were in. I had time to make you lunch before I left, make sure you eat all of it. You don't eat enough, pet. I hope you are able to get lots of your college work done. Have a wonderful and productive day, baby. I cannot wait to come home and watch a movie with you. Work sucks!
Love,
Edward Nashton (#1 boyfriend)
Y/n felt their heart swell as they read the note, every word was like one of cupid's arrows in the chest. He was truly an amazing boyfriend. They felt very lucky to call him theirs. Sighing happily, they closed the fridge. Y/n wanted to save the lunch for later on, so instead they grabbed an apple from the fruit bowl. Taking a bite, they sat down at the kitchen table in front of their laptop. Y/n opened it up and opened up their word document. Luckily, this week of their college work was pretty tame, nothing was due for a while. They could easily slack off today and not have any repercussions, but they wouldn't feel productive. So, they ate their apple and got straight to work with typing up a research paper for their psychology class. Edward always liked to know about what assignments they were doing, so they would have to tell him about it when he got back home.
~
A few hours passed and y/n had gotten a lot done on the paper they were writing. About an hour ago they had stopped, wanting to take a break. Realizing they had not changed out of their pj's, they walked into the bedroom. When they saw the desk, they remembered last night. They remembered how comfortable it was to rest their chin on Edward's lower thigh. They remembered how soothing it was to get their head scratched and pet by Edward. When he did that, y/n was like putty in his hands. He knew exactly what made y/n happy, sad, mad, and he definitely knew what made them...desperate. Thoughts crossed y/n's mind as they imagined Edward sitting in the chair, his legs spread as he looked down at the space under his desk. Y/n imagined being underneath it, hands dragging his jeans down as they looked at him with puppy dog eyes. They imagined his head falling back as they took him in their mouth, happily bobbing up and down on him. They imagined him grabbing a fistful of their hair, pushing them down to choke on him. They imagined him praising them as they pleasured him. Oh, how y/n loved his voice. Whether it was his morning voice saying good morning, or him saying he loved them, or him praising and degrading them during sex. They loved his voice no matter what he was saying. It was like honey the way it flowed through their ears, sweet and smooth. Y/n whined, realizing how much they missed Edward. He had said that they were going to spend the entire day together. He said that they could follow him around like a puppy. And that's exactly what y/n wanted to do. Shivering, they grabbed one of Edward's favorite outfits that they wore and quickly changed into it. The cropped tank top they put on was a cream color and it ended just above their belly button. On top of that, they wore this crochet cardigan that was cropped, also ending above their belly button. The cardigan was crocheted spaciously, allowing you to see what the person wearing it had underneath it. It was made of multiple colors, a soft green, a soft pink, and a soft cream color. Y/n slid on a pair of denim shorts that were slightly ripped. Edward, who loved to sew, had sewed hearts and stars on the pockets of the shorts. Y/n had asked him to do it, practically begged him, and he did it happily. Humming, they walked over to the vanity and applied some mascara, blush, and lip gloss. Blowing a kiss to their reflection. Before they left the room, they grabbed a choker from off of the dresser. It was white leather that attached to a silver outline that was shaped like a heart. It was hollow, which Edward loved, because he could hook his fingers through it and pull y/n in for a kiss.
"I'll pay him a visit! I'm not sure if he's on his lunch break, but I don't think he'll mind!" They said to themself, grabbing their lunch.
Y/n slid on their converse at the front door, nearly slipping as they did so. They grabbed their purse, leaving the apartment quickly. Y/n was anxious to see their boyfriend, missing him dearly already. Yes, y/n was a very clingy partner, but Edward didn't mind. He loved it, actually. The fact that they were so clingy to him made him feel loved for the first time in his life. And, he knew that y/n didn't have a great past with relationships. If he could make them feel loved, cared for, wanted, and treasured, then he was going to do it. They deserved all the love in the world through his eyes.
~
Y/n walked into Edward's office building, intimidated slightly by the security guards. Swallowing a lump in their throat, they waved at the guards. Even though they weren't going to do anything, y/n couldn't help but feel nervous. They walked to the elevator and pressed the button to open up the doors. Almost immediately, they opened up and y/n hurriedly stepped inside of it. Letting out a deep breath, y/n selected the third floor button. Usually y/n preferred to take the stairs, but they had walked to the subway from their apartment and walked a block from where the subway train arrived all the way to the building, so they were a little worn out. A few dings signaled that y/n had arrived at Edward's office floor. Feeling a little anxious, they stepped out and looked around. They had only been to Edward's work a few times, dropping things off that he forgot. But, it had been a while since they last visited. Heading towards the reception desk, y/n looked at the man sitting in the chair. He looked up at y/n, smiling lightly.
"Good afternoon, what can I help you with?" He asked politely.
"Hi there! Um, do you know where Eddie works? Um, sorry, Edward Nashton? I'm just stopping by to say hi, that's ok right?" They asked sheepishly.
"Oh, of course that's perfectly fine. It's not like we get busy here anyways." He said, covering the side of his mouth in a 'sneaky' way.
Y/n giggled, amused at the man's humor.
"Anyways, he's just down that hallway and then you take a left. His cubicle is the one on the far left corner. It'll show his name on the side. May I ask how you know him?"
Y/n nodded, smiling at the receptionist.
"Thank you very much! I'm his partner, y/n. It's nice to meet you..." Y/n looked at the name plate.
"...Maurice! Nice name!" They complimented.
"Aw, thank you! And, did you say you're Edward's partner? As in...dating him?" He asked.
"Um, yeah? Last time I checked!" They joked, laughing.
"I don't mean to offend, it's just that you two seem very..."
"Opposite? Yeah, we know. We get that a lot. But hey, going 2 years strong!" Y/n said.
"2 years? Woah, congratulations." Maurice looked down at the work phone as it started ringing.
"Oh, I've got to take this. I'm glad I could help you and I love your cardigan by the way!"
Y/n mouthed a 'thank you' as they walked away, not wanting to disrupt the phone call. The interaction with Maurice washed away any anxiety they had. It was nice to see there was one friendly person where Edward worked. From what he talked about, it seemed that no one was nice to him at work. Sighing, y/n followed the receptionists instructions, going down the hallway he pointed to. When they reached the end, they turned left and came face to face with a bunch of cubicles.
'Jesus, no wonder Edward gets depressed here.' They thought to themself.
Y/n walked to the far left corner, just like Maurice said. Lo and behold, the cubicle on the end read 'Edward Nashton' on the side of it. Smiling, y/n peered over the corner, hoping to catch him off guard. Edward sat in front of his desk, files neatly organized on his desk, spare for a few papers that were next to him. The computer before him showed a spreadsheet, y/n already bored to death at the sight. Who knew being a forensic accountant could be so boring. But, they were sure there was more to it than spreadsheets, so maybe it wasn't always boring. Edward lifted up his coffee mug that had Snoopy and Woodstock on it and took a sip from it. He secretly loved the Peanuts movies. He would watch the Great Pumpkin on Halloween, A Merry Christmas Charlie Brown on Christmas, etc. Slowly, y/n tiptoed behind him and covered his eyes with their hands. He jumped a little, surprised at the suddenness of it. Y/n leaned down to his ear and whispered.
"Hi daddy..."
Edward reached his hands up, grabbing their hands and pulling them away from his eyes. He turned around in his chair, looking up at y/n who was waving at him excitedly. He saw that their purse hung off their shoulder, the lunch he had made for them sitting inside of it in the brown bag. His eyebrows furrowed, making y/n shrink slightly.
"What are you doing here, y/n?" He asked.
"I wanted t' come and see you, sir..." They mumbled softly.
They both kept their voices low, not wanting anyone to hear their conversation. However, the people at Edward's job weren't exactly quiet. Everyone was always having a conversation, whether it was about work or not. They all talked with each other, except for Edward. He was fine with that though, he had tried to make friends with his coworkers before, but it just didn't work out well. So, he put his focus on getting his work done so he could earn money and spoil the one he loved.
"Y/n, I get off in 2 hours. You could have just waited at h- wait, how did you even get here?" He asked curiously.
Y/n lowered their head, picking away at the chipped nail polish that adorned their fingers. They mumbled something under their breath. Raising an eyebrow, Edward grabbed their waist and pulled them closer to him.
"Speak up." He ordered, his voice stern.
"I took the...subway..." Y/n admitted shyly.
Edward pinched the bridge of his nose, grabbing y/n's arm firmly. Letting out a sigh, he loosened his grip. He was extremely frustrated with y/n.
"Y/n, you know I don't like you taking the subway alone! Even I don't like going on the subway. It's dangerous in this city, especially for someone as breathtaking as you. How many times have I told you this?" He explained softly.
"A billion times..."
"No, but, close enough. Look, I'm happy to see you, but you could have just waited a couple more hours for me to get home. So, I'm going to ask you again, and this time I want the real answer. What are you doing here?"
Y/n sighed, Edward knew them too well. Yes, they wanted to see him really bad. But, y/n couldn't get those thoughts from earlier out of their head. They so dearly missed his touch, his kisses, and his voice. God, his voice. Suddenly, y/n felt embarrassed to even say anything. Edward sensed this, placing his hands on both of their hips, rubbing them with his thumbs. He was still upset that they put themself in a dangerous situation when they could have just waited at home for 2 more hours. And, they didn't even bother calling him and letting him know that they were coming over. It might seem extreme for Edward to not want y/n to use the subway, but the two of them had an unfortunate encounter in the subway once. Nothing bad happened, Edward stepped in just in the nick of time. But, the whole scenario scared them both. And they both agreed that y/n needed to go on the subway with someone else at all times. So, he was frustrated that they broke that rule. Not even frustrated, it just scared him. He watched as y/n leaned down slightly, hovering over his ear. Cupping their hand over their mouth, they whispered.
"I couldn't stop thinking about you..."
Edward smirked subtly.
"Oh, really? What a nice gesture." He feigned innocence.
"Eddie...you know what I mean..." They pouted.
He nodded.
"Yes I do, pet."
They did a 360 for Edward, showing him the full outfit they were wearing. He took a deep breath at the sight, not noticing it when they first walked in. Edward didn't want y/n to feel like they had to show skin for him to find them attractive, because it just wasn't true. Y/n could wear a burlap sack and swim in a pool of sewage and he would still find them to be the most attractive person to grace this earth. But, sometimes they wore outfits that drove him crazy. And this was his favorite one. But, the cherry on top...the choker. God, that choker made his heart race and his fists clench. He remembered when he bought it for them, they wanted it so bad, and who was Edward to refused what they wanted? Of course he bought it for them. Little did he know that he bought his own kryptonite.
"I got all dressed up for you, daddy. Your favorite outfit..." They smiled.
"I can see that..." He replied coldly.
"I want you to...to fuck me...I need it..." The whined quietly.
"Y/n, no, we are in a public setting. You need to behave yourself, ok?"
Y/n crossed their arms over their chest. Huffing, they stepped on his foot roughly. Honestly, it did not hurt Edward in the slightest. The shoes he wore to work already hurt his feet on a daily basis, so it felt like a tickle in comparison. He looked down at his shoe and then back up to y/n. Edward could tell they instantly regretted the decision as they had taken a step away from him. The smug smirk that was on his face disappeared, now an unamused natural pout. He used his finger to gesture for y/n to get closer. Reluctantly, they did so.
"Tell me, do you feel better? Did you accomplish something with that immature act?" He asked.
Y/n shook their head shyly.
"Mmm, well, I was already upset with you for breaking a rule, one that we both agreed on for your safety. You could have gotten a ride from Mrs. Jacobs next door. You could have been patient and waited a couple more hours. You had so many options and you chose the only wrong one. But, now, well...now I'm furious. You come to my job dressed up like the cute thing you are, demand me to fuck you, and pitch a fit when I don't give you what you want? Really?"
"Well, you always give me what I want." They retorted.
"I do, when you're good. But right now, you're acting like a spoiled. Little. Brat." He seethed, pinching the inner part of their thigh.
Y/n whimpered softly, swatting at his hand instinctively. He scoffed, turning around in his chair and facing his computer. Edward began to type away at the keyboard.
"Did you at least get some of your research paper done?" He asked.
"Obviously." They grumbled.
Edward shook his head while looking at his computer, getting sick of y/n's attitude. The keyboard clicked as he entered some numbers into the spreadsheet. Y/n waited for him to say something, adjusting their shorts that were riding up their thighs.
"You know, giving me an attitude is not going to change anything. It's just making it worse for you. How about you try and get a hold of yourself?" He reminded.
Y/n mocked him quietly, moving their hand to mimic his mouth moving. Walking up behind him, they leaned down and rested their chin on his shoulder. Edward rolled his eyes and kept his focus on his work. Letting their painted fingers trail down his other shoulder, y/n quietly whined erotically in his ear.
"I want you t' fuck me, sir...pretty please?" They asked innocently.
Biting the inside of his cheeks, Edward turned around in his chair once again. He felt so very conflicted. If they were back at their apartment, he would have already pinned y/n against the wall. He would have already dragged them to the bed by their slutty choker. And currently, he was imaging y/n on his lap wearing nothing but that flattering crochet cardigan. But, he was at work, and he was pissed that y/n was trying to seduce him in his work space. Edward didn't have a problem with PDA, but he had limits and a sense of professionalism. Y/n knew this, but they chose to let their desire take over their thought process. He was not making him uncomfortable at all, he actually found it amusing at first. But, he was getting tired of it. He need to put them in their place, quickly.
"Y/n I have no idea what has gotten into you, but you need to cut it out right now. I am not asking anymore, I am demanding." His voice was lower than usual, sending chills up y/n's spine.
"Mmm, I like when you get like that, daddy..." They placed a hand on his thigh.
Edward leaned back, straightening his posture. Looking around him subtly, he made sure no one was looking. Thankfully, it looked like everyone was in there cubicles and no one was walking around. In one swift motion, he leaned forward and grabbed y/n's face with his hand roughly. His grip on their jaw was firm, preventing them from moving at all, otherwise it would hurt. He leaned in close, face just inches away from theirs.
"You are pushing me to my limit, pet. You're acting like a filthy bitch in heat. Is that what you are?" He spat, looking them in the eyes.
"I-"
Edward released his grip on their jaw, pushing them away. Catching their balance and trying to play it off as they tripped, y/n held onto the cubicle. He scoffed, looking them up and down. Their cheeks were bright red, chest heaving up and down as they panted. His gaze wandered down to their thighs, seeing how they were squeezed against each other. He shook his head while looking at y/n, causing their bottom lip to quiver.
"God, you look so pitiful. What happened to the attitude from before, huh?" He mocked, fixing his crooked glasses.
"Um..."
"Here's how things are going to go. You and your filthy mind are going to wait in the lobby until I get off of work. You're going to eat your lunch and come up with an apology for your behavior. Do you understand me?" His voice was stern and his eyes were dull as he looked at them.
"Y-Yes..."
"Yes, what, pet?" He taunted, cupping a hand over his ear.
"Yes, daddy..." They mumbled.
Edward sighed, looking at their meek stance. He reached over and grabbed his mug, taking a sip of the hot coffee. Placing it back down, he shook his head. He lifted his hand up, waving them away in dismissal. He was extremely irritated, frustrated, and infuriated. Edward hated getting stern with y/n, but they had broken a few rules in a matter of 1 hour. And, even when he kept telling them to stop, the attitude never relented. He was most definitely a pushover when it came to y/n, but he knew how to lay down the law when he needed to.
"Go." He ordered simply.
Nodding their head, y/n left his cubicle. They knew they were in deep shit. He was right though. Their attitude was through the roof and it was not necessary at all. Y/n couldn't help but feel embarrassed as they walked back to the reception desk. Of course Edward wasn't going to drop his work to satisfy their desires. He was at work. If y/n had been in his situation, they would have said no too. Guilt built up in their chest, overpowering the heat that was pulsing between their legs. Smiling at Maurice, they sat down in a chair in the lobby. He looked at them curiously.
"Something wrong?" He asked.
"Huh? Oh, no nothing's wrong. Edward said he gets off in an hour and a half, so I'm just going to ride back home with him."
Maurice nodded, focusing back down on whatever work he was doing. Sighing, y/n opened up their lunch and started eating. They were honestly too upset to eat, but they knew Edward would be even more upset if they didn't eat the lunch. He was right in the sticky note he left earlier, they didn't eat enough. It wasn't like they were doing it on purpose, they just got caught up in college work and hobbies that they would sometimes forget to eat. Y/n took a bite of the sandwich, feeling their lungs tighten as they held back a sob. They continued to eat their lunch as they made an apology for Edward. Considering how they acted, it would have to be a very good one.
~
Edward got up from his desk, gathering his things and putting them in his bag. Y/n's perfume hung in the air still, filling his senses. Sighing, he pushed his glasses up, hanging his bag over his shoulder. Stepping out of the cubicle, he thought about what he was going to do about y/n. He was still extremely upset with them, but he also felt bad. Edward knew all y/n wanted was to just be near him, but they could sometimes let their emotions take control of them, preventing them from fully thinking things through. He knew they were probably beating themself up over the whole situation. They were still in trouble, but Edward decided that he would lessen the punishment, knowing that the stress of college was probably enough punishment on them already. And, knowing y/n, if he did punish them they would probably find it hot. Breaking out of his thoughts, Edward walked into the lobby, glancing quickly at Maurice. Y/n was standing in front of the desk, handing him a piece of paper.
"Edward, I've been talking with your partner. I hope you don't mind if we exchange contact information? Y/n had the brilliant idea of going on a double date. You, them, me, and my boyfriend Tristan." He asked.
"Oh, yes that's fine. We'll have to figure out a day to do that. Thank you for keeping them company while they waited. I hope they didn't keep you from your work." He said, giving y/n a subtle look out of the corner of his eyes.
"Absolutely not, y/n was very respectful. Plus, it's not like I have much work to do anyways, am I right?" Maurice laughed, y/n chuckled as well.
"Hah, yeah. Well, we have to get going now. I'll see you on Monday, Maurice." He bid, wrapping his arm around y/n's waist as they left the lobby.
The two of them walked to the elevator, Edward pressing the button to open the door. He glanced moved his hand away from y/n's waist, running it through his hair. Y/n watched him, smiling up at him.
"You were nice back there, does that mean you're in a better mood?" They asked, hopeful.
As the door opened, they both stepped inside. Edward pushed the parking garage button, looking at y/n with a deadpanned face. He leaned against the metal railing on the side of the elevator. He clasped his hands over the bar, knuckles turning white as he gripped it.
"Better mood? Sure. Does that change anything? No." He answered.
The elevator door opened and they walked out, Edward holding y/n's hand as they did so. Pulling out his keys with his other hand, he unlocked his car. Every second of the drive home felt like an hour to y/n.
~
Y/n and Edward had finally gotten back to the apartment. It was dead silent as they removed their shoes. Y/n sat down on the couch, unsure of what exactly they should do. Their heart was racing as they watched him take off his coat, hanging it up on one of the hooks on the wall. The tension was so thick y/n could practically feel it against their skin, like a humid summer night. Edward's keys dropping on the table next to the door broke the silence, causing y/n to jump slightly.
"E-Edward..."
He didn't say anything, walking in the kitchen instead. Y/n didn't look away from their lap, focusing on the pads of their fingers, suddenly finding it to be the most interesting thing in the world. Edward stood in the kitchen, drinking a glass of water that he had poured. He held the glass in his hand as he walked back to the living room, standing in front of where y/n was sitting. Despite his gentle facial features, his stance made y/n feel intimidated. The brown sweater over his collared button up shirt made y/n feel things that were completely inappropriate for the current situation. No matter how much they tried, y/n couldn't stop getting filthy thoughts of their boyfriend out of their head. And, Edward could tell right away. The events before were proof enough as to how y/n felt today.
"Did you eat your lunch?" He asked.
"Yes, I ate all of it. I promise."
"You don't need to promise me anything, y/n. I can tell when you lie to me. I'm glad you ate." He said simply, taking a sip of his water.
Y/n fidgeted with their hands.
"I believe you have an apology for me?"
"Y-Yes..."
"Well, I'm waiting. You do not need me to tell you when to say it, though I know how much you'd love for me to order you around right now." He huffed.
Y/n nodded.
"U-Um, I-I'm really sorry for c-coming to your work and b-being inappropri-"
"I'm sorry, I thought you were going to apologize to me? Not give me some half-assed statement." He interrupted.
"I-"
"I-I-I...how about you get on your knees? Maybe that'll show me how sorry you truly are." He mocked.
Slowly, y/n slid to the floor, getting on their knees before him. Edward was already a fairly tall man, but he looked like a giant when y/n kneeled before him. His glasses reflected the light coming from one of the windows, creating an ominous glare over the lenses. It made him look even more mysterious than he already was. He looked down at them, waiting for them to say something. After a few seconds, he groaned.
"What? Do you really need me to tell you when to speak like a dog? Speak!" He ordered.
"I-I, I'm really sorry, sir. I knew you were at work, but I just missed you so much. I did! I really did! I wanted to see you, and, and, and I couldn't stop thinking about you all day. I just wanted you so bad! I'm sorry I broke rules, I really am. It won't happen ever again! Never ever, I swear. Puppy just missed you super bad and, and then it made me think filthy things and made me want you even more. It was so, so, so bad of me to be like that at your work. I know I hu-humiliated you and probably made you uncomfortable. Daddy, I'm so sorry I really am! I was a bad puppy for doing that. I just wanted a hug at first because you didn't give me one this morning! Please, please, please don't be mad at me, daddy! I'll be good for the rest of the night, I swear!"
Edward looked down at them as they grabbed the material of his slacks, tugging on them gently. Tears welled in their eyes, some trickling down their pink cheeks. Seeing them grovel at his feet was quite a sight to behold. If the circumstances were better, he would have had them say their apology while choking on his dick. But, he felt that the situation required a different type of action.
"That was a very nice apology, y/n. Very nice, indeed." He said.
Y/n sniffled, looking up at him. Placing the glass of water on the table beside the couch, he bent down. His eyes were gazing down at y/n's. He gently grabbed their chin, forcing them to look up at him.
"But, I don't know if I should let you off the hook so easily. You see, I gave you many opportunities to stop and not get punished. But, you didn't take them, isn't that right?" He asked, nodding his head in synch with his last few words.
"Y-Yes, sir..."
"You didn't make a mistake, you purposefully disobeyed me and ignored me. And, that just doesn't sit well with me. It leaves a pit in my stomach, you know?" He explained, holding a hand over his stomach.
Y/n whined.
"Oh, there we go again with the pitiful whines. Your pretty sounds aren't going to get you out of this, pet." He said, shaking his head.
"B-But..."
"But? Excuse me? What could you possibly say to help you get out of this situation that YOU put yourself in? Please, enlighten me." He taunted, tilting his head to the side.
Y/n fell silent, looking away from him in defeat. There wasn't anything they could say. It was true, they did this to themself. Edward didn't have many rules in their relationship and the ones he did have were very simple and easy to follow. And y/n broke them all within the span of an hour. If they had just been patient and waited at home for Edward, he might have been pounding into them in their bed. But, they weren't patient. Instead of getting dicked down, they were on their knees and begging Edward for forgiveness. Now, the begging was not necessary at all, it was just something that they thought Edward would like. They were right though, Edward loved it when y/n begged. It was one of his weaknesses. Of course he was going to forgive y/n, but not before he put them in their place and taught them a lesson. The begging, no matter how much Edward loved it, would not get y/n out of the punishment that awaited them. He scoffed, standing up and stepping away from y/n, causing them to fall and catch themself with their hands on the floor.
"You humiliated me at work today, y/n. Anyone could have come across my cubicle. Anyone could have seen you acting like a dog, begging for me to give you a treat. Is that what you wanted? Did you want to embarrass me at my job?" He asked, hands in his pockets.
"What? No! Of course not, sir! I j-just got carried away didn't think..." They explained, a frown on their lips.
"I believe you, honey. But, that doesn't excuse what you did, now does it?" He asked, tone becoming gentle.
"No..."
"Exactly. If I did not punish you for your bad decisions, you would continue to make them. Would you not?" He questioned.
"No, I wouldn't!" Y/n spat out.
Edward let out a breathy laugh, leaning down and bending his legs. He placed his hands on his knees, shaking his head in amusement. Y/n watched his movements, every single one of them sending a spark through their veins. They knew he was right, but they didn't want to admit it.
"Ohhh, but that's where you're wrong, pet. I spoil you and treat you like an angel on earth, all because I love you with my entire heart, body, and soul. But, that does not mean you should expect me to let you get away with things. Spoiled or not, you need to have manners and respect. And I know for a fact, if I fucked you on this couch right here and now, you'd do the same exact thing tomorrow. Why? Because I rewarded your bed behavior. That just won't do, no, no, no." His tone was flamboyant and cocky.
God, y/n hated that he was right. He was a fucking genius and knew y/n like the back of his hand. They were stupid for trying to convince him to not punish them. It would never have worked.
"You really are just like a puppy, y/n. Here I am, teaching you right and wrong through rewards and punishments. Do you think that will help? Should I make you do tricks? Hm? You were certainly acting like a wild dog earlier." He commented, a sickening smirk on his face.
He hooked his fingers through the heart of y/n's choker. With one swift yank, he brought them with them as he stood to his feet. They choked slightly as the leather dug into their skin, feeling relief when they stood on their feet. Somehow, Edward was more intimidating face to face, rather than towering over y/n. Perhaps it was because of how kind his face was, making it jarring when he took a serious tone.
"I think you need to be trained, puppy. We can't have you misbehaving while I'm off at work, can we?"
Y/n's eyes widened, feeling heat rush once again between their legs. Their knees buckled, gripping onto Edward's shoulders for stability. He laughed, pushing y/n back so they fell on the couch. They watched as he hummed to himself, walking into the kitchen as if nothing happened.
(A/n: Ok, guys...this is where the humiliation and puppy stuff REALLY starts. I don't rlly need to put a content warning, I just wanted to let you guys know that I was giggling, kicking my feet, twirling my hair, and pissing liquid nitrogen while writing this. But seriously, this is so humiliating I'm gonna be so honest with you. YOU GUYS WANTED THIS! I swear to balls I'm going to hell dude. They have a VIP room for fanfic writers probably.)
Y/n stood up from the couch, out of breath and confused. As Edward turned around, he opened up a cabinet. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw y/n had stood up. Snapping his fingers, he pointed back to the couch.
"Sit." He ordered.
Y/n's eyes widened and they found themself sitting down immediately after. It was almost as if it was a gut reaction. The tone of his voice was firm, commanding respect. Shaking in anticipation, y/n kept their eyes on the floor in front of them, waiting for Edward to come back. After another minute, his footsteps sounded in their ears. Looking up, y/n saw their boyfriend standing in front of them. He had a bar of chocolate in his hand. Call y/n a whore for sweets, but they instantly licked their lips. It was chocolate for fuck sake. Their eyes stayed on the bar as he placed it on the T.V stand, taunting them.
"Here's how this is going to go, puppy. We are going to continue our night like we normally do. But, you're going to listen out for me. If I call you, you come. If I tell you to sit, you sit. If I tell you to beg, you..." He trailed, wanting y/n to finish the sentence.
"Um, I...beg?" They finished.
"Yes, very good! Look at you, listening to directions. If only you did that before." He praised, a bit of a jab at the end.
"Um, what's the chocolate for?" They asked, pointing at it.
"Well, if you're really good tonight, you get it." He said.
"I like chocolate, but...I'd rather have...you..." They pouted.
"Oh, trust me I know. I never said you weren't getting fucked tonight. I just said you needed to be punished first. Believe me, this won't be fun for you. But, if you learn your lesson, maybe I'll give you the treat that you've been begging for all day." He said suavely, the words rolling off his tongue so smoothly.
Y/n's breath hitched.
"O-Ok, sir."
"That's a good pet. Now, I'm going to take a shower. I want you to join me." He cooed.
"I sh-showered after I got my research paper done today."
"Oh, I'm sorry but, I don't recall asking you anything. I do remember telling you to get in the shower, though." He challenged, raising an eyebrow.
Y/n nodded hastily.
"Y-yes, sir."
"Mmm, you're off to a terrible start, pet. Go get the shower ready and get inside." He ordered.
Without wasting a second, y/n bolted inside their bedroom. Edward followed slowly behind, glancing at the watch on his wrists. Grunting, he saw that the time was 6 o'clock. The shower would need to be quick, as he would need to make dinner soon. As he removed his clothes, a smirk tugged at his lips. Thinking about eating dinner with y/n made an utterly humiliating though come across his mind. Well, humiliating for y/n, not him. But, he wasn't sure if he wanted to go that far. It would depend on how well y/n was behaving. Though, he would love to see y/n on all fours while he sat at the table...
"Um, daddy?" Y/n peeked out of the bathroom.
"Yes, puppy?"
Edward turned around, tossing his clothes in the hamper. Y/n was taken aback by how relaxed and comfortable Edward was with being naked in front of them. Yes, they had been dating for over 2 years, but y/n still got a little shy every now and then. That's just how they were. But, Edward, well, he was very confident. Before he dated y/n he was the complete opposite of confident. But, being loved by a good person was all he needed to boost his self-love. Y/n really admired him for that and would always remind him of how proud they were of him. It made Edward smile every time.
"Th-The shower is running..." They mumbled.
"Then get in." He replied, walking into the bathroom.
Y/n turned around, walking across the tiled room. Edward was close behind them. The two lovers got into the shower, warm water trickled down their bare bodies. Y/n, who had already showered earlier, just let the water wash over them. They didn't feel a need to clean themself once again. Y/n examined Edward's body as he started to wash his hair. He was far from fit, his body type closely resembling a 'dad bod'. Y/n loved it though, absolutely adored it. Edward worked out every now and then, but it was nothing major, only simple exercises. He had stretch marks on his hips, faint pink lines that resembled rivers on maps. He had very full cheeks for a man of his age. His stomach was a little pudgy. All of those things were beautiful to y/n. He was so comfortable to snuggle up to, instantly lulling y/n into a blissful sleep every time. Sighing, y/n got closer to him, resting their head against his chest as he swiped his hair back with the water. He looked down, smiling at the sight. However, he placed his hand on top of y/n's head, gently pushing them down, being carefully not to let them slip. As the reached the ground, they looked up at Edward, his naked body sending shivers down y/n's spine.
"If you want to show me affection, you will do it like a dog. Do it correctly." He said.
Y/n swallowed a lump in their throat, realizing how seriously Edward was taking this. He continued to rinse his hair out of conditioner, already done shampooing his hair. Y/n, unsure of what he meant exactly, sat at his feet and wrapped their arms around his calf. Funnily enough, that was not even close to what Edward meant. But, y/n felt comfortable nonetheless. Edward always had a naturally warm body temperature, so it felt nice when y/n rested their face against his leg. He thought about saying something, but decided that it wasn't that big of a deal. Even when he was trying to humiliate y/n, he still was susceptible to being a softie. But, alas, he had to wash the rest of his body. He bent down slightly, planting a kiss on the top of their head.
"Puppy, you have to let go. Ok?" He said.
Nodding, y/n scooted away until their back was against the shower wall. The water had caused their hair to flatten to their face and head, hanging in their eyes. Parting the wet strands to the side, y/n watched as Edward continued to bathe himself. It was a wonderful thing to be that close with a person. Being so in love and comfortable with each other that both of you could just watch each other shower, as if you were simply watching the sunrise. Y/n's thoughts were cut short by the water turning off, causing a shiver to run down their spine as the warmth left their body. Edward pulled back the curtain and grabbed a the towel from the towel rack. He leaned down and grabbed y/n under their arms, lifting them up to their feet. Quickly, wrapped the towel around their body, making sure they were nice and warm. After that, he grabbed his own towel and wrapped it around his waist, his subtle v-line showing slightly.
"If this is the punishment, then what the hell is the reward?" Y/n asked, raising an eyebrow at Edward's kindness.
"Hah, very funny. To be honest, I just wanted your company while I showered. And, I know you get very cold easily, so I'm just being a good boyfriend." He explained.
"Ok, so the punishment hasn't really started yet?"
"I suppose not, no. Why, were you on edge the whole time?" He grinned.
"Kind of, yeah."
"Hm, that's funny. Well, I'll ask you one more question. What do you think we should have for dinner?" Edward asked, stepping out of the shower and roughly using the towel to dry his hair.
"What, am I supposed to eat dog food?"
"Oh, you're very funny aren't you? If you don't give me an actual answer then maybe you can just eat a banana?" He suggested.
Y/n gagged, hating the texture of bananas.
"Fuck no, let's make sandwiches. I don't really want to cook anything..." They mumbled.
Edward put on a pair of boxers he had left on the sink. He wrapped the towel over his shoulders, catching any water that dripped from his hair. Grabbing his hairbrush, he brushed his hair back completely, letting it fall naturally afterwards.
"Well, I'd be the one cooking. Last time you cooked you nearly set the apartment on fire. But, sandwiches sound fine. Go get dressed into something comfortable, it doesn't matter what. Just uh, put that choker back on." He said, walking out of the bathroom.
Y/n dried their hair as much as they could and then drying the rest of their body. Edward walked by the bathroom doorway, wearing nothing but a pair of sweats as he walked out of the bedroom. Using a rag, y/n gently removed excess makeup from off their face. Once every bit of it was off, y/n hummed to themself, brushing their hair and turning off the bathroom light. Going over to their side of the bed, y/n grabbed the choker from off of the nightstand. As they put it on, they smirked, grabbing one of Edward's biggest shirts from the dresser. They slid it on, wearing absolutely nothing underneath. Y/n was anxious for when Edward would 'start' the punishment. He was known to be dramatic, having a penchant for making sex, foreplay, and anything else like that very drawn out and agonizingly teasing. It always blew y/n's mind how Edward could be the sweetest most caring man to ever grace this earth, and then switch to someone who made them so wet that they would drip down their legs.
"Puppy, come here!" He called, voice purposefully sounding like babytalk.
Quickly, y/n hopped on one foot as they put on their socks. They were in such a rush that they didn't realize they didn't match. The right foot was covered with a green sock and the other was covered with a purple sock. Y/n hurriedly left the bedroom, sliding across the hardwood floor that made up the 'dining room' which was more like a small corner where a table was, and the kitchen. Edward watched them as they grabbed onto the counter, stopping their sliding. They looked up at him, smiling widely.
"Eager, are we?" He teased, pinching their cheek.
"I'm hungry!" Y/n admitted.
"Oh, you are?" He asked before taking a bite of his sandwich in front of them.
Y/n's eyebrows furrowed, nodding slightly. Edward finished chewing what was in his mouth. Swallowing, he took a sip of water afterwards. Y/n, hesitantly, reached out to grab the other sandwich. Edward swatted at their hand, causing them to recoil.
"Woah, who said you could eat?" He asked, leaning against the counter cockily.
"W-What?" Y/n stuttered.
"Last time I checked, dogs eat on the floor." He said.
Y/n watched as Edward smirked, grabbing the plate the other sandwich was on. He placed the plate on the floor of the kitchen, leaning back against the counter afterwards. Taken aback, y/n watched as their boyfriend continued to eat his sandwich as if he didn't just tell them to eat on the floor. Y/n laughed, thinking that he might be joking. Edward stopped mid-bite, turning to look at them. His eyebrows were knit slightly, looking them up and down as if he was confused.
"What's so funny?" He asked.
"For a second there, I th-thought you were going to m-make me eat of the f-floor!" Y/n said in between giggles.
Edward's facial expression did not change at all. Y/n's laughs slowly died down, the smile on their face turning into an open mouthed pout. He took a bite of his sandwich, pointing down to the plate on the floor.
"Eat."
"E-Edward, that's humiliating..." They said.
"Oh, I know. You see, that's the whole point. You humiliated me at my own job, yeah, one of my coworkers overheard a little bit of your pathetic begging. How do you think I felt?" He asked, taking a sip of his water after.
"I'm sorry..."
"If you're sorry, then you'll get on the floor and eat like the pathetic, begging dog you are."
Nodding, y/n slowly got on the floor of the kitchen. The wood felt cold against their exposed legs. Edward had finished his food, putting away his dishes as y/n looked at their sandwich. It really wasn't a big deal, as y/n had sat on the floor and eaten food many times before. Hell, Edward had done it with them. Sometimes, the floor was just a comfortable place to sit. But, given the context of the situation, it was now embarrassing. Glancing up at Edward, they looked into his eyes for some shred of mercy.
"You either eat on the floor or don't eat anything at all." He said, crossing his arms over his bare chest.
Swallowing a lump in their throat, y/n picked up the sandwich. Their eyes flickered back up to him, hoping it was ok if they ate with their hands. He didn't say anything, so y/n took that as a good sign. Looking back down, they took a bite and placed the sandwich back on the plate. Edward smiled, bending over and petting their head.
"See, there you go. Not so bad, right? All you have to do is fucking listen." He said, grabbing a fistful of their hair roughly at the last sentence.
Y/n whimpered, nodding their head. They felt filthy for finding the scenario hot. Edward did too. Without saying another word, he left the kitchen and sat down on the couch with his glass of water. Y/n started to stand up, but his voice made them sit back down.
"If you're thinking about getting up, don't. You're going to finish your food first."
"But, I wanna come cuddle!"
"Yeah? Well, I wanted to have a normal fucking day at work. We don't always get what we want, do we? Eat your food and stop complaining because I could make it more humiliating." He said, voice harsh.
"Yes, sir..."
Edward mumbled 'that's what I thought' under his breath. Moving his legs up on the couch, he laid down, propping his head up on a few pillows. He groaned softly, pinching the bridge of his nose with his pointer finger and thumb. Once y/n was done eating, he didn't really have an idea of what he was going to do next. All he knew was that he wanted to make y/n remember who was in charge. He wanted to remind them that he wasn't a pushover all the time. He loved them with all his heart, but he wasn't a doormat. If they wanted to beg for his dick like a dog at his place of work, then they could act like a dog for the rest of the night. He took a sip of his water, letting the liquid glide down his throat. He looked at the time on the T.V, reading 7 o'clock. It wasn't too late, which was good. The sound of water running signaled to Edward that his partner had finished eating. He didn't worry about them not eating it on the floor, when y/n was told to do something by Edward in a situation like this, they always obeyed.
"Come here, puppy." He called, snapping his fingers two times.
Y/n walked over, sitting in between his legs on the couch. Edward laughed slightly, shaking his head. Confused, y/n looked at him, snuggling up to his side. He sat up and grabbed their waist, moving them off the couch and onto the carpeted floor of the living room. Y/n huffed, drawing their knees to their chest.
"Dogs can't get on the couch. I don't want you getting it dirty with your filthy mind. If you want to get on the couch, you'll have to sit on daddy's lap, puppy." He mocked.
"Fine."
Y/n crawled up on Edward's body. One of their legs rested in between his own legs. They snaked their hands under his back and hugged him, head resting on his sternum. He rubbed circles into their back, lulling y/n into a false sense of security. They probably thought that it was over, but it was far from it. He had thought about something a few minutes ago and desperately wanted to act on it. He trailed his hand down to the plump of their ass.
"How would I even get the couch dirty?"
Edward raised an eyebrow, not feeling any waistband below y/n's shirt. Grinning from ear to ear, he pulled the hem of the shirt up, exposing y/n's bare ass. They shivered, instinctively sitting up., but Edward's hand pushed them back down to his chest. He squeezed their ass gently. He slowly slid his other hand underneath y/n's body, reaching down to in between their legs. Using one finger, he slid it between their folds, instantly feeling how wet they were. Y/n whimpered and he laughed breathily.
"You would have dripped all over the couch, you dirty thing. And why, exactly, are you not wearing anything underneath this shirt?" He asked.
"Well, I just thought..."
"You thought I'd notice how wet you were and I'd cave?" He suggested, sitting up and making y/n straddle his lap.
"Did you think I'd want to fuck you?" He mocked.
"Maybe..."
"Why would I fuck you when I haven't even finished your punishment?"
Y/n fell silent.
"Speaking of..."
Edward reached over to the side table, grabbing a beanie baby they kept their as a cute decoration. He held it near y/n's face, then tossed it across the room. Y/n let their mouth hang open, looking at him in disbelief.
"What the fuck?!"
"What your mouth when you talk to me." He ordered, grabbing their jaw.
Y/n shrunk in his lap, nodding their head.
"Fetch." He said, smiling.
Y/n's eyes widened, looking at where the beanie baby landed. They looked back at Edward, seeing how amused he was from the situation. Rolling his eyes, he pushed them off his lap and onto the floor. He bent over, slapping their ass firmly.
"I said, fetch. Now." He ordered.
Y/n whimpered, standing up and walking over to the beanie baby. Edward slammed his hand against he cushion of the couch, the soft thud making y/n stumble.
"Filthy fucking mutts do not walk. Get on the ground." He ordered.
Y/n whined, feeling completely humiliated. Edward watched as they crawled on all fours to the beanie baby, their ass peaking out from under the shirt. Y/n looked at Edward, lifting up their hand to pick it up. He tilted his head slightly, which caused y/n to put their head back down. Sighing, they picked it up with their mouth. Edward smiled, patting his thighs.
"Such a good puppy, come here! That was so good! Who's a good puppy?" He cooed, taking the beanie baby from their mouth and putting it back on the table.
Y/n rested their chin on his knee, a blush on their face. The praise he was giving them was gratefully accepted. Though the circumstances were humiliating, they couldn't help but feel some form of pleasure from it. Edward pet their head, trailing down and rubbing their back as they sat on their heels. They couldn't help but give into the tingling sensation, closing their eyes as they rubbed their cheek up against his sweatpants.
"Oh, is the puppy starting to like this? You've done it plenty of times before. I suppose it's just different because of how humiliating I'm making it, hm?"
"Y-yes, sir."
"Hm, you really are filthy mutt, aren't you? You love being humiliated, don't you? No wonder you were soaking wet." He smirked.
Y/n couldn't contain their sexual tension anymore. They 'pawed' at his sweatpants, tugging them slightly. Edward chuckled in amusement, letting his head roll back as he did so. Looking back down at y/n, he grabbed a fistful of their hair.
"What do you think you're doing?"
"I wan' it..." They mumbled, grabbing his drawstrings.
"You do, really? My, I never would have guessed by the way you're dripping down your own thigs." He mocked.
"Please!"
"But, I haven't trained you yet honey."
"Please, do it while fuck me..." They pleaded, not even talking in full sentences.
He bent over, grabbing them by the waist and lifting them on his lap. Brushing a piece of hair out of their face, he hummed. It wasn't that bad of an idea. He could tease them, please them, and make them remember that he had the control.
"What a smart puppy you are. That sounds like a great idea, sweetheart. Why don't you put a movie on, hm?"
"W-Why do we need a movie?"
"Just put one on, puppy."
Y/n listened, turning around and facing the T.V while sitting on his lap. Grabbing the remote, they tried to find a simple movie to watch. After having a little trouble deciding, they put on 101 Dalmatians.
"Look at what I put on, get it? Because y-"
Y/n was cut off by Edward picking y/n's waist up and thrusting up into them. A shrill yelp left their throat and they gripped his thighs. Edward laughed softly, rubbing their back.
"That's very cute y/n, I get it." He groaned, staying still inside of them.
"D-Daddy..." They whined.
"Here's something we can work on. Being quiet. You have a hard time using your inside voice, puppy."
"Wait..."
"Oh? But, this was your idea."
Y/n nodded.
"Are you going to let me teach you how to properly behave? If you're a fast learner I'll give you a treat that's even better than that chocolate." He cooed in their ear.
"Y-yes, sir. I'll learn!"
"Oh that's so good, very, very, good. Now, I want you to do your very best at being a quiet little puppy, ok?"
"Ok, daddy. I'll be quiet."
Edward grabbed their waist firmly, taking a deep breath. He tilted his head back, slowly fucking in and out of them. Y/n sighed and bit on their bottom lip. His pace picked up and y/n was digging their nails into his sweatpants. Edward groaned, eyes closed shut at the sensation of y/n around his dick.
"You're doing a great job, puppy. Just a little bit longer, ok? Keep that pretty muzzle shut for daddy."
Y/n released one of his thighs, clasping it over their mouth. They knew he was talking like that in hopes that they would let a moan slip, but they wanted to be a good puppy for him. They wanted to make him proud. Biting down on their fingers, y/n felt their body relax as his pace slowed and eventually came to a stop. His dick stayed inside of them, twitching every so often and stretching them out lightly.
"Well look at you, huh? You did good, honey. It's taking every fiber of my being to not...mmm."
He rubbed their back for a few seconds, letting them relax for a bit. Edward took a few deep breaths, humming to himself quietly.
"Ready, puppy? I'm going to need you to focus, ok? You get so distracted so easily. So, guess what we're going to do, my love?"
"W-What, daddy?"
"I'm going to fuck you and ask you a few math problems. You need to give me an answer within 10 seconds." He smirked.
"B-but, I hate math!" They whined as Edward spun them around to face him.
"Oh, yes, I know my sweet pet. But, sometimes we have to do things we don't like."
Edward held onto their waist once again, slowly fucking up into them. Y/n moaned softly, happy that they could finally make noise again. He thought for a moment, thinking about what questions he was going to ask them. After a minute, he looked up into y/n's eyes.
"If...I had a pie th-that was cut into 9 pieces...how many slices are 1/2 of the pie?" He asked.
"9 slices of p-pie? Fucking odd numbers...Edward these are easy fraction questions!"
"Then why haven't you answered it yet?"
Y/n groaned, throwing their head back.
"Fuck, 4 1/2? I think?"
He nodded, slowing his pace so y/n could collect themself. Humming, he rubbed their thighs with his thumbs.
"Good job. Now, what's 12x7?"
He quickened his pace once again, watching as y/n's face contorted. Letting out a shaky breath, he pinched their ass when they didn't respond.
"Shit! I was counting you dick! 84!" They yelped.
"Don't call me that but, yes. One more." He said.
His pace got even faster. A devilish smirk grew on his face. If y/n got this next question wrong, then it would be difficult for him to contain his laughter. It was so simple that it was difficult, it would throw them off. Y/n tended to overthink simple things, which is why they weren't exactly the best in math. Sure, it was cruel of Edward to make y/n answer math problems while fucking them at a cruel pace, but he couldn't help it. It was too fun.
"What is 0 divided by 1?" He asked.
"W-What? That's so easy, are you sure that's the question?" They panted.
"Yes, pet. I asked you it, now answer." He ordered, pinching their butt.
"Ow! It's too simple, you're messing with me!"
"Is it? Is it really that simple?" 5 more seconds." He smirked.
"F-Fuck...0? I don't know you're making me nervous!" They whined, covering their face with their hands.
Edward slowed down once again, cupping their face with his hands. Y/n peeked out between a gap in their fingers, looking at Edward through it. He had a proud look on his face, nodding his head enthusiastically. Y/n smiled softly.
"Yes, see! You knew the answer, you were just under pressure. But look at that, you got all the questions right in the time limit I gave you, all while you were getting fucked by me. If that's not focus, then I don't know what." He cooed.
"D-Does that mean were done?" Y/n asked happily.
"Oh no, we have one more thing to do, puppy. It's the most difficult one yet." He grinned.
"I c-can do it!"
"Mmm, I sure hope so..."
Edward turned y/n around, having them face the movie that was playing. He straightened his posture, back slightly aching from the current position he was in. His hands planted on y/n's hips, holding them in place on his lap. Letting out a sigh, he leaned forward and rested his chin on y/n's shoulder.
"We're going to work on something you're terrible at being, pet."
"W-What is that?"
"Patient. Being patient."
"What do you m-mean, sir? I'm always patient!" They groaned.
"Oh, you are most definitely not. Don't pretend like you are."
Y/n sighed, trying to focus on the movie. Edward's dicked stilled inside them. They turned around after a bit, looking at him.
"So, what are we doing?"
"You, are being patient."
"But, it's torture!"
"Well, maybe you should have thought about that earlier, hm?"
"Whatever."
"Oh here we go again with the god damn attitude! I'm getting fed up with it." He scoffed.
"Then fuck me!" They pleaded.
"And reward you for bad behavior, really? No, I think you still haven't learned anything. Perhaps I am being too gentle with the punishment..." He mumbled, lifting y/n off of his body.
Y/n whined at the loss of him inside them, crawling back to his lap. He shoved them away roughly, getting up from the couch and pulling his sweats up. Grabbing the remote, he turned the T.V off, making y/n cross their arms over his chest.
"Your lack of patience is making my own wear thin..." Edward grumbled, tossing the remote on the couch.
"I'm s-sorry, I'll be patient now. I promise!"
"No, it's apparent my punishments weren't sending a clear enough message. So, we're going to try something different."
Y/n watched as he walked into their bedroom. Hurriedly, they followed after him, standing in the doorway. Edward was hunched over their dresser, rummaging through clothing. Their heart raced as he lifted his hand up, holding something in it. Because he was facing away from them, y/n could see his shoulder blades shift as his arms moved. The subtle muscles he had in his back were flexing, making y/n weak in the knees.
(A/N: This upcoming part has Edward losing his temper, yelling, and getting carried away. Btw, y/n and Edward HAVE consented to doing stuff like this and they have a safeword, so no one is being 'overpowered' or 'forced'. Just wanted to say that in case anyone got that idea. I'd never write that stuff, that's gross asfffff! <3 Btw, for the yelling, imagine his voice when he was yelling at Batman, hehe. Ok, continue reading now!)
His knuckles were gripped around something that looked like a rope, it was hard to tell in the dimly lit room. Releasing his grip ever so slightly, he let the material unravel just barely, dangling from his hand like a pendulum. Y/n's eyes widened, following the hook at the end of the leash as it swayed. The movement was hypnotic, almost. Edward turned around, grabbing the hook and holding it in his other hand. His face was void of all expression, the only thing hinting at his frustration was his heaving chest.
"Edw-"
"Kneel."
Y/n stood there, as if they were frozen to the carpet. Edward scoffed, walking toward them and grabbed their face with his hands, shaking them briefly, yet roughly.
"God! You can't even listen to a simple fucking command! I said sit! Do you know what kneeling is, huh?!" He raised his voice.
Y/n stuttered over their words, unable to form coherent sentences. He laughed, stepping away from them. Placing his hands on top of his head, leash still firmly gripped, his laughter grew louder.
"You're not just a bitch in heat, no, you're a stupid bitch in heat! Fuck! KNEEL!" He yelled.
Instantly, y/n dropped to their knees. The heels of their feet dug into the plump of their ass, causing slight discomfort. However, the discomfort was the last thing on their mind. It was their boyfriend who was holding a leash, losing his patience above them.
"Oh look at that, it only took me saying it what, 3 times to get you to do it? You want me to praise you? Pat you on the back for getting on your knees? A fucking dog can follow orders better than you." He spat, squatting down to their level.
"I-"
"Did I ask you to speak? No. So be quiet or I'll muzzle your mouth shut! You fucking mutt!"
Y/n nodded, looking at the carpet in humiliation. God, they thought earlier was embarrassing. They were dead wrong. Even when they were supposed to be getting punished, they still toyed with him. They still tried to wiggle out of it. They still tried to get their way in it. They had pushed him past his limit, and that was very difficult to do to him. He was probably the most patient person in the world, so y/n had royally fucked up if they managed to make him mad. Edward's eyebrows were knit together, face slightly red as he brought the leash to y/n's choker. Roughly, he hooked it on the heart, instantly tugging it as he stood up. Y/n face planted on the ground, groaning as they used their arms to push themself back up. Edward yanked on the leash again, smiling when they face planted again. They stood still.
"Get up." He ordered.
Y/n shakily pushed their body up, being thrown down again by a yank. Sighing, they slowly sat up, glad that Edward didn't pull them down again. But, they spoke too soon. He wrapped the leash around his hand, tugging it towards his body. The leather choker chaffed against y/n's neck as they fell back to the carpet, knees most definitely getting rug burn.
"How does it feel to be played with, pet?" He asked.
He pulled them towards him with the leash. Y/n grabbed the choker, desperately trying to relieve themself of the tightening feeling. He stopped pulled when they were at his feet, socks matching, unlike y/n's. They sat up, looking up into his eyes. He scoffed, lifting up a leg and pressing their back down with his foot. Y/n caught themself with their hands, looking at the ground.
"I did not say you could make eye contact. Direct eye contact with dogs, especially bitches like you, can make them aggressive. Are you going to get aggressive with me, mutt? Speak." He asked, raising an eyebrow.
"N-No, sir."
"Good, because I'll be quick to put you back in your place." He seethed, pushing his heel into their back lightly.
Y/n whined, hand shaking below them and giving away. Falling to their chest, they grabbed onto the fabric of Edward's sweatpants. Kicking their hands away, he stepped back.
"Get your filthy paws off of me."
He kept hold of the leash, walking over to the bed. Y/n, having no choice, followed him on all fours. Sitting down on the bed, Edward propped his forearms on his thighs. The leash hung limply in his hand, other hand grabbing y/n's chin. Y/n whined, watching as Edward brought his hand up and pushed his glasses up. He looked like a total nerd but at the same time looked like someone who could shatter your spine over his knee.
"Open your mouth." He ordered.
Y/n did as he said, sitting on their heels with their hands planted firmly on the ground. His fingers dug roughly into the hollow part of their cheeks, forcing their mouth to remain open wide. Edward leaned forward, looking in their mouth. He was quiet, analyzing every aspect of it. The way their tongue stuck out slightly, the way their throat pulsed around absolutely nothing, and how easily his dick would glide down it. His gaze hardened, abruptly spitting in their mouth. Y/n's eyes widened, trying to close their mouth out of instinct. He kept a firm grip on their jaw though, watching as his spit slid down their throat. He shoved them back, groaning as he buried his face in his hands.
"You know, if you had just been patient, this wouldn't be happening. If you had just been the good, sweet, thing you always are, you wouldn't be in this situation."
Y/n frowned, feeling ashamed of themself.
"I have no problem with spoiling you and treating you like royalty, I love it. But, you so desperately need to learn respect, especially towards me. Because, let's face it puppy, you act like a fancy little show dog, but you're really a street dog begging for scraps. You need to learn humility, respect, obedience, and patience. I give you practically everything you want and yet, you have the audacity..."
Edward stood up, yanking the leash slightly upwards. Y/n choked, grabbing at the choker.
"THE FUCKING AUDACITY to come to my place of work, DEMANDING me to fuck you? DEMANDING me to drop everything I'm doing to satisfy your sordid desires?"
Y/n whimpered, afraid to speak without being told to. They pouted, tugging at the hook that was attached to their choker. Edward loosened his grip, letting them fall to their knees.
"I'm the one that has you collard and kneeling on the floor before me. If I felt like it, I could literally and metaphorically have you eating out of the palm of my hand. Isn't that right?" He spat.
"Y-Yes, sir. Yes, of course." They stuttered, nodding their head frantically.
Edward mocked their nodding, fake pouting as he looked at them. He stuttered, mimicking their nervousness. Y/n watched with doe eyes as the mocking evolved into laughter. It was a soft laugh, more like a chuckle as he gestured down to them.
"Look at you, leashed and cowering at my feet. What happened to the confidence? The demands?" He asked, holding up a hand to his ear.
Y/n stayed silent, a shiver going down their spine. Edward nodded, pointing at them and waving his finger, as if he figured something out. That same chilling laugh left his throat.
"Oh, yes, that's right. You won't speak unless I tell you to. Go on, tell me what happened to your cocky attitude." He demanded, crossing his arms over his chest.
"I-I, well...um..."
"Oh, come now, pet. Speak up."
"Y-You...put me in my p-place..." They mumbled.
Edward nodded his head exaggeratedly. A sickly grin tugging at his lips. Y/n panted below him, chest heaving with arousal and anticipation. He laughed loudly.
"You think this was putting you in your place? Oh, I'm not done. I was just getting you warmed up." He stated.
Edward sat back down on the bed, legs slightly spread. His hands dangled between them as his arms were propped on his legs. He hummed, eyes narrowing behind the lenses of his glasses. Clicking his tongue, he pointed his finger down.
"Lay down." He said.
Y/n hesitated for a few seconds, feeling the pit in their stomach grow larger. The heat between their legs grew stronger, making their heart race. Edward furrowed his eyebrows.
"LAY DOWN! IF I GIVE YOU AN ORDER YOU DO IT! GOD!" He yelled.
Y/n slid down, laying on their stomach. The feeling of the carpet against their bare thighs was slightly itchy. Edward nodded in approval, spinning his finger in a circle.
"Now, roll over."
Whining, y/n did as he said. The hem of their shirt rose up as they did so, revealing the bare bottom half of their body. He smiled, loving how y/n was finally listening to his instructions.
"Come."
Y/n got up on all fours, crawling over to between his feet. They once again sat on their heels, hands on their thighs. Edward shook his head, a mixture of amusement and pity on his face.
"Now beg."
Y/n looked at him, confused. He made a 'tsk' noise, grabbing a fistful of their hair. He brought their face close to the tent in his sweatpants. Y/n was so close that they could feel it twitch every so slightly against their cheek.
"Is this not what you've been wanting all day, puppy? Is this not the reason you came to my work and humiliated me? Is this not what made you a greedy, spoiled, pathetic brat? Go on, you can answer me. I'll allow it." He said in a soft casual tone, glancing around the room like what he was doing was an every day activity.
"Y-Yes, daddy. It is..."
"Ohhh, I imagine you must want it so terribly."
Y/n nodded. Edward pushed them off, their heels digging back into their plump ass. They looked up at him, making sure to not make direct eye contact. They weren't sure if he was serious about it earlier, but they weren't going to take any chances.
"Then beg for it, puppy. That is what you are, right? My puppy?"
Y/n nodded again, mouth slightly agape. He smiled, laughing softly. He was awfully enthusiastic for the situation. Y/n was trembling in front of him, thighs slick with their own arousal. And meanwhile, Edward was giddy, as if he was playing with a toy he got for his birthday.
"Then beg like my puppy. Beg for my dick."
Y/n took a deep breath, letting it out in one large exhale. They looked up with puppy dog eyes.
"P-Plea-"
"Oh dear, I think you misunderstood what I was demanding of you. You see, puppies can't talk. They whine. They whimper. And they bark. Why don't you try again? Now." His voice was bubbly, but it had a dominant tone.
Y/n's face turned beet red. Swallowing a lump in their throat, they placed their hands on his knees. Edward raised an eyebrow as y/n stuck out their bottom lip slightly, quivering. They whined, 'pawing' at his sweatpants. Y/n wiggled their ass, causing him to chuckle slightly. He put his hand on their hand, petting at their hair.
"Oh, isn't that just cute? Bark for me, hm?"
Y/n shrunk, embarrassed at the idea of them barking in front of Edward. They opened their mouth, but shut it promptly. He frowned, tutting y/n as he lightly slapped them on the cheek.
"If daddy says jump, you say 'how high?'. If daddy says run, you say 'how far?'. If daddy says bark, you..."
Y/n whimpered, closing their eyes tightly. Not wanting to think too much about it, they barked. It came out even more pathetic than they thought it would. It was shrill, shaky, and sad. Edward laughed, grabbing their face with his hands. He rubbed his thumb over their cheek, humming as he looked in their eyes.
"My, my, my, how utterly pathetic. Oh, but you did obey my orders." He said.
Y/n smiled at him, face still red from earlier.
"You look like you want a reward for your obedience. Am I right to assume that, puppy?"
Y/n nodded frantically, sitting up straight on their knees, Their hands tugged at his sweatpants, whines leaving their throat. Edward unhooked the leash that was on them, standing up. Y/n's hands fell off the fabric of his pants, watching as he put the leash back into the dresser. Every step he took made y/n's heart race faster. Stretching his arms out, he sat in bed, underneath the covers. Y/n was still kneeling on the floor.
"Remember when I said you had to learn patience, pet?" He asked, two fingers tilting their chin up.
They nodded.
"Hm, yeah."
He leaned down to their ear, fingers hooking into the choker. Edward tugged them forward, his breath fanning on their neck. Goosebumps pricked over their skin, a chill going down y/n's spine.
"Tonight, I will be sleeping soundly in our bed. But you, my pet, oh..."
Y/n's eyes widened. His lips slid down and pressed against their neck gently, trailing back up to their ear. He smirked.
"You will not get a wink of sleep. As you lay down, you'll toss and turn. I know how you are, puppy. Thoughts of me will play over and over in your head. The burning heat in that pitiful stomach of yours will grow throughout the night as you fantasize about me deep inside of you, making your body arch and your eyes roll back. In the morning, I'll wake up to you laying in a puddle of your own arousal, desperately grasping at me, hoping I'll give you a morning fuck. But, that will have to wait, won't it? After all, you need to learn patience."
Y/n sat their, eyes glazed over with desire. Edward pulled away, laying down in the bed. Leaning over, he turned off the lamp on the nightstand. He turned around, facing away from y/n.
"Your sleeping on the couch, by the way. Oh, and don't even try relieving yourself. You and I both know it won't be anywhere close to how it feels when I do it." He added, yawning.
The silence made him smirk to himself, taking off his glasses and placing it on the nightstand. Getting comfortable, he didn't bother seeing if y/n had moved.
"Good night, pet."

Since the announcement that Dune part three is in development I've watched a couple of youtube videos and read some articles announcing the news, talking about potential release dates and just generally talking about what they want for the third installment and in the comment section of them there seems to be a lot of discussion around how true to the book the third film will be.
Some are saying that they think Villeneuve will stick closely to the book Dune Messiah, others are saying that he will throw the book out completely and just make up his own story for the third film. Some are saying that after the changes made in Dune Part Two, particularly with the changes to Chani's character arc, its now impossible for him to stay true to the book.
Now I haven't read the book so not only do I have very limited knowledge of the book, I also don't have any special attachment to it. So my following views on the subject are coming from that perspective and are based on the two films I've seen and some comments that were in these articles/comments section.
(So mild book spoilers here, you can learn this from reading the blurb of the book.) One thing I did learn is that the book the third film will be based on, Dune Messiah, is actually set 12 years after the end of Dune Part Two's events. We don't see the holy war, we only see the aftermath. Personally I found this news a little disappointing because I feel like they've been revving the audience up with this holy war for the last two movies and so I was really looking forward to seeing it, to seeing just how far Paul goes, whether he tries to hold back at all, whether he has moments of hesitation etc, I was just really hyped to see this war they kept going on about. That being said I do think that seeing the aftermath would still be interesting too.
I've also seen some people say that the book itself won't translate as well to film as the first book does, apparently it has a lot less action and is more political intrigue, as one article put it, its a lot of people sitting in a room and talking. Again haven't read the book so I don't know how accurate that is, but on a similar vein, I've seen a few people say that whilst the book is good its nowhere near the level that the first book is and so they are worried the third film could be a let down for non-book readers.
So as I said above, lots of opinions going around, mostly from book readers because naturally they know a lot more about what is coming than us non-book readers. But it got me thinking how might Villeneuve approach the film and work around some of the concerns I've seen being discussed, the main ones seeming to be, there not being enough action/ it not translating well to screen and how they are going to deal with Chani, as it seems she plays a vital role in messiah and kind of needs to be at Paul's side in order to fulfil that role. So here are my theories and guesses at how Villeneuve might approach the last film. Again these are just my own speculations and opinions.
This first one could definitely be influenced by my own wishful thinking, but one way they could add a bit more action to the film is to spend say the first hour, for example, showing the holy war and using the time to explain how and why Chani returns to Paul, the birth of Alia maybe, etc and then have the time skip to 12 years later and cover the events of Messiah. These films usually have a long run time so if they keep the long run time for this film maybe they'll be able to cover both events. I do believe that the messiah book is considerably shorter than the Dune book, but then the Dune book was split into two films so I am not entirely sure on how well it would work. I guess it would depend on how well it is written.
Another possibility is what some have suggested and that they just throw the book out pretty much completely. The argument here being that Herbert wrote Messiah because when his first book came out the audience didn't get his intended message that Paul wasn't the hero, so he wrote Messiah to really hit home his message that this was a story about the dangers of false prophets and not a hero's journey type story. However Villeneuve has already achieved this message in Dune part two, which could give him some leeway to take the story in a new direction and add his own spin on it. It could also be an opportunity to make the story more appealing to modern audiences, the books were written in the 60's so political and world views were a little different than today. I do think that might be part of the reason why they changed Chani's character, the loyal concubine who follows along with the false saviour's crusade might not have been all that appealing to a more modern audience. The flip side of that though is that abandoning the book completely might not be a popular decision amongst the book readers. So you could end up alienating one side of the audience in favour of making the story your own and trying to appeal more to the general audience.
The third way could be to stick as closely to the books as you can given the changes made in part two. Villeneuve could just start the film with a narration from one of the characters like he did with Chani in part one and Irulan in part two, maybe this time they could have a narration from Paul himself explaining what happened in the war and how and why Chani came back to him etc, setting the scene so to speak. Then from then out just follow whatever happens in the books. Personally I don't know how satisfying I would find this but it would at least follow the same pattern as the other two films if it opens with a narration.
One other thought I had was they could keep the time-skip for the film but have a miniseries that is set during the holy war, I know they are already doing a miniseries covering the bene gesserit so maybe they can also do one showing the war to fill in the gaps. However I think this would be highly unlikely as I don't think they'd have the time to film both a mini series and an actual film. But you never know maybe we'll get really really lucky.
Out of all the possible options, I personally think the first one would be the best option. It would be the best of both worlds, the book readers will still get to see the book adapted, but spending some time at the beginning of the film showing the war could add that needed action and make it more exciting for those who haven't read the book and who might otherwise be disappointed.
But I am curious to know what others think. If you haven't read the book how do you feel about there being such a large time-skip? Do you care if they skip over the war? Or if you are a book reader are you hoping they'll stay close to the book or do you share the same opinion as some of the other comments I saw saying it won't translate well to film? How important do you think the change to Chani's character is and do you agree with those saying it has messed things up going forward? I am very curious to know. All of this being said I am still very excited that they are making a third film and I trust that no matter what direction he chooses to go Villeneuve will deliver another amazing piece of media for us.

Extra Story 1
Katarina is currently riding a carriage. She asks a question to Geordo, sitting opposite her.
Katarina: The play we're going to watch is having its debut performance today, right?
Geordo (grinning): That's right. Today is the debut performance of the play we're going to watch.
A few days ago, Geordo invited Katarina to go to the theater. Katarina is not fond of theater since the plays she watched long ago always were hard-to-understand historical plays, but Geordo told her that the play this time was intended for a general audience, so she thought she would give it a try. And here they are.
Katarina looks out of the window.
Katarina: I think we'll arrive soon.
Keith: Right, we'll arrive soon.
Keith is actually riding the carriage with Geordo and Katarina.
When Katarina told Keith that Geordo had invited her to the theater, Keith told her he also wanted to see the play and asked if he could join them. Katarina accepted. When Geordo came to fetch her, Geordo told Keith he had no seat for him, but Keith told him he had already booked a seat for himself. Katarina felt relieved that Keith already had his own ticket.
The carriage has arrived at the theater. Katarina gets off the carriage, goes through the theater's entrance, and arrives in the hall.
Mary: Lady Katarina!
Katarina turns her head.
Katarina: Mary, Sophia, Maria, Prince Alan, Lord Nicol!
Katarina can see that all her friends are here.
Katarina: What are you all doing here?
Mary (smiling): We were interested in the play so we came to watch it. I am so glad to meet you, Lady Katarina. Let's watch it together.
Katarina is happy to meet her friends in such an unexpected place.
Katarina: Yes, let's.
Geordo: Unfortunately, the box seat I took can't hold so many people, so Katarina and I will watch the play together and once it is over, let's all spend time together.
Katarina remembers that nobles take seats in elevated boxes in theaters. In that case, everyone will indeed not fit in.
Katarina: Oh, right. Everyone will indeed not fit in. Then let's all spend time together after the play...
Mary: It is alright, Lady Katarina. I have also booked a box seat. Up to 4 people can sit in it, so let's split gentlemen and ladies and watch the play.
Sophia and Maria quickly take Katarina's hands.
Mary: Well then, gentlemen, please enjoy the play in the box seat booked by Prince Geordo.
Mary starts walking elegantly, without letting anyone object. Katarina, Sophia, and Maria follow her.
The girls arrive at the box seat booked by Mary. Katarina feels like it is spacious enough to easily fit more than 4 people. But then she remembers that nobles usually have attendants with them, so it might have been taken into account.
Katarina sits on the soft sofa and sees sweets and tea already on the table.
She remembers how she was amazed by the service the first time she went to the theater. Maria seems to be as amazed as she was long ago.
Mary: Lady Katarina, do you know about the story adapted in this play?
Katarina (shaking head): No, I only heard that it was an adaptation of a story.
Sophia: It seems to be a love story between a princess and a knight. I don't know the precise content since it was written on reading material for commoners and hasn't been made into a book. I am looking forward to it.
Katarina: So it is a love story between a princess and a knight, huh? I have read many of them in romance novels but I have never seen them in plays. I can't wait.
The plays Katarina watched before were all historical plays, like the history of one of the past kings, or the research of a famous magician. Compared to these, she is way more interested in love stories.
Maria: Is that so? Though, I heard they do this kind of play in commoner theaters.
Mary: Since it was popular in small theaters, it seems like they decided to hold a performance in a big theater like this for the first time.
Katarina: I see.
Katarina is amazed by how well-informed Mary is.
The curtain rises.
The girls watch the play.
The play has ended.
Katarina loved the play. She found the production very high quality: the stage setup, the actors' performance, the costumes… The story was staged as a romance novel, so it was easy to get into it. But Katarina was displeased with one thing.
Katarina: Why was there a bad ending?
Maria is puzzled.
Maria: What is a "bad ending"?
Katarina: Ah, umm~ Like, there wasn't a happy ending.
Sophia (outraged): I wholeheartedly agree! Why did they do such an ending?
Katarina notices that Sophia's expression just now is just like Acchan's angry expression.
Mary (hand on her cheek): I would have never guessed that it would turn into a blighted love.
The princess and knight's love story in the play ended up in a blighted love.
It was the story of a princess and her protecting knight, a commoner, who were both attracted to each other. A common trope in romance novels. In most of them, the two would overcome their difference in status and get married. But in this play, the knight stepped aside because he thought the princess couldn't be happy with him.
Katarina personally prefers happy endings, but she also reads blighted love stories.
Katarina: But it totally felt like they would end up with each other! It completely built up towards them throwing away their status and getting married. So why at the very end, did it end up with him stepping aside?!
Sophia: It is completely as you say! It should have undoubtedly developed towards their marriage! I just can't believe that at the very end, the knight stepped aside.
Katarina and Sophia agree. Maria gives it some thought.
Maria: But the knight stepped aside because he noticed the prince's feelings for the princess and thought he would make her happier than him, who had low status. Since I am a commoner like the knight, I can understand his feelings.
As high-ranking nobles, Katarina, Sophia, and Mary can't really understand that feeling, but they guess it might be the case if Maria says so.
Maria (decisively): I can understand his feelings, but... If it were me, I wouldn't give up.
Katarina is blank, surprised by Maria's sudden determined words.
Maria (dignified): Supposing there was a difference of status between me and the one I love, if they chose me, I would want to stay by their side for as long as they desired. I would do anything to that end.
Maria makes a dignified face befitting of the heroine of the game. Katarina is sure the capture targets are also attracted to Maria and want to live with her for as long as they desire.
Mary (fully determined): Me too! I also want to stay by my beloved's side forever! If there were a big obstacle in my way, I would break it!
Sophia (excitedly): Everyone is so passionate. But I share the same opinion. Even if another more suitable person has appeared, what about the princess's feelings? For him to give up one-sidedly, the knight is so self-righteous. If he had refused to give up and run away with the princess, they could have lived together.
Katarina feels like Sophia breathing out of her nose out of excitement would be NG for a game, but aside from that, she vehemently agrees with her.
Katarina: That's right. He shouldn't have given up. The princess loved the knight after all. It would have been great if she had chosen to be with him.
The girls all agree that the play was great and that the knight shouldn't have given up at the end. They all have fun exchanging their impressions.
Katarina wonders how it went with the boy's group.
Geordo's POV
Geordo wonders how things turned out like this. He deeply sighs.
A few days ago, Geordo heard a play would adapt a story intended for the general public. Katarina wasn't really interested in plays because a lot of them were historical ones, but he thought she might like this one since she enjoyed reading romance novels.
Geordo secured tickets right away and invited Katarina. Katarina promptly accepted, but Geordo was fairly sure he wouldn't be able to go to the theater alone with her
Based on the usual pattern, since Geordo can't prevent Katarina from talking, she would tell Keith, then it would reach Mary, and then Mary would suggest doing it "with everyone". He can clearly see that happening.
Geordo doesn't particularly hate spending time with everyone. Before meeting Katarina, he found it bothersome to spend time with people at times, but that is not the case anymore. His friends, who have been with him since childhood, are important to him and he enjoys spending time with them.
Still, Geordo considers his time with Katarina as a different matter. The heart-pounding time with the one he loves is special.
Since he has graduated from the academy, Geordo will start working as a full-fledged royal. As for Katarina, she will join the Ministry of Magic. They will have significantly less time to see each other. That's why he wanted to spend just a little time with her now.
Geordo intentionally chose a narrow box seat to that end. He expected that Mary and the others would forcibly enter the box seat he booked, but if they couldn't all fit in, they would have no choice but to wait outside. He also intentionally chose the date of the debut performance so there wouldn't be any other available box seats. That way, they wouldn't be able to get a large box seat on that day.
...So why did it turn out like this?
Geordo looks at the 3 grown men closely huddled together on the narrow sofa. They are in such close proximity that it would have been improper if they had been unmarried men and women. But since they are all men, there is no problem since same-sex marriage is currently not recognized in Sorcier. This distance does not raise any problem, but it looks so sultry. The sofa is too narrow for 4 grown men to sit together but if he chases them out, the 3 won't have any seat
Geordo wonders if Mary secured a box seat from the start while anticipating that he would take a narrow box seat. If so, the frightening Mary Hunt is becoming more of a formidable enemy with the passing years. He will need to refine his countermeasures against her after that. While thinking of this, Geordo shudders about having to watch a play on a narrow sofa filled with men.
Geordo: Umm, won't it be hard for you? Wouldn't you rather not force yourself to watch the play and just wait outside?
Alan: No, since I'm already here. Besides, I'm curious about the play, so I'll watch it.
Nicol (expressionless): Me too.
Keith: I'll also watch it since I'm already here. If I don't, I won't be able to discuss the play with Big Sister after.
Keith has added his motive. Geordo has the same motive, so he reluctantly decides to endure the narrowness and the sultriness and watch the play.
The play is over.
Geordo feels like, because they're bringing forth a story intended for the general public for the first time, the staff put out all the stops for the play. Geordo could tell they put a lot of work into the stage setup and the costumes.
The story was about the love between a princess and a knight like in many romance novels that Katarina enjoys, but the feelings of the two protagonists who were attracted to each other despite their difference of status were carefully depicted. Geordo thought that at this rate, they would probably marry each other at the end, but it unexpectedly ended with the knight stepping aside.
Geordo wonders why the knight would step aside here, then concludes that each person is different. But his younger brother and friends have other opinions.
Alan: For him to step aside for the princess here...
Alan is grimacing with a pained face because he is empathizing with the knight. Geordo thinks to himself that Alan has grown up into such an honest person. He sometimes wonders if Alan really is his brother.
Nicol: Yes, for him to go through his decision to step aside so resolutely...
Nicol is expressionless but the tone of his voice resounds as pained.
Geordo is surprised that Nicol would empathize with the knight, but then he remembers that Nicol is Sophia's older brother.
Keith: For him to step aside and entrust the princess to the prince...
Keith makes an incredibly sad face. Geordo thinks to himself that Keith seems to empathize with the knight but he is not disregarding the other people. Though, his look is similar to the other two.
Geordo analyzes the situation. 4 grown men are sitting tightly with shoulders touching on a narrow sofa intended for lovers and married couples and 3 of them are hanging their heads with pained faces. If someone were to enter right at this moment, they would think he had done something to the other three. On the other hand, if he leaves ahead and the remaining 3 are seen hanging their heads like this, people may think that he not only did something to them but also promptly ran away.
In the end, Geordo didn't leave the sofa and just waited for the other three to sort out their feelings.
When the 4 of them left the box seat and joined back with the girls, the girls were excitedly talking among themselves. Geordo felt incredibly jealous looking at them.

Your review of ONK made me wonder: If a show tries to convey a message and the viewer fails to get it, how much blame can be placed on the author and how much on the people? A person may try to explain something as clearly as possible, but there will always be someone who won't understand, so who can be blamed?
I want to clarify that this is not an attempt at a last minute defense of Aka or the series, but a genuine question that has been on my mind since reading the review.
And I apologize if the question is unclear, I'm not a native English speaker.
Oh, it's a very valid question. And not one exclusive to anime; Fight Club is a perfect example of that question. So many of its fans see it as an aspirational tale of Manly Men Rejecting Modern Society And Embracing The Masculine Tradition Of Violence, but the movie's whole point is that its characters are a bunch of loser incels turning to violence and terrorism to cope with their emasculation complex and the whole masculine glorification of violence is Bad, Actually. Is it th4e audience's fault for missing the message so profoundly because it conflicted with their preconceptions and biases? Or did the movie just not do a good enough job communicating that message and accidentally made the concept of fight club itself seem way cooler than it meant to? Genuinely hard to say.
That said, one bit of analysis I've always found really handy comes from Lindsay Ellis' video series on the Transformers movies: "Framing and aesthetics supercede the rest of the text, always, always, always." When you're working with a visual medium, what's communicated visually will always register more strongly than what's simply part of the story and dialogue (hence why "show don't tell" is such a big rule). In the case of Fight Club, you could argue that the cinematography and editing do such a good job selling the illusion of fight club as something cool and fun and desirable that the intended subversion where the movie then goes "Psych! These people are all losers" in the final act doesn't register as strongly. In the case of anime, it's why your standard fanservice package does such a disservice to female characters; no matter how well written or interesting they might be, if they're constantly framed tits and ass first, that's how the audience will primarily remember them.
And don't get me started on Attack on Titan, which is basically Fight Club's issue stretched across almost a hundred episodes. You spend the first half of the series basically force-fed in-universe fascist propaganda that gives you a biased perspective on what's really going on, only for the curtain to pull back in the second half and force you to confront the grim reality the first half purposefully hid from you. It puts you in the same place as the characters, forced to re-evaluate everything you though you knew and realize just how easily you were taken in by lies and genocidal rhetoric spread by this world's version of the Nazis. But because the first half of the series was so effective at selling you on that rhetoric with its orgasmically violent action and rousing speeches set to epic music, a bunch of fans never grew out of it and continued beating the drums of fascism even as the series turned around and started ripping apart the very ideals it was once holding up. Which is how you end up with a bunch of unironic Eren Yeager stans cheering for him to literally destroy the world because they think he's some kind of based uberchad instead of a fundamentally broken shell of a man running on hate-fueled exhaust fumes until he burns himself down to nothing in his inability to escape the cycle of violence he's become ensnared in. Because that was the story they were trained to expect, and they refused to budge when the other shoes started dropping.
Now, that doesn't really apply to Oshi no Ko since its issues are all primarily text-based, not visual-based. But it's a useful bit of critical thinking that informs a lot of the way I look at media. In a visual medium, visuals always hit harder and leave a stronger impact than words alone, for better or worse.

Will you please share your black adam thoughts?? I was also very nervous about it and how it would handle the JSA but i actually really liked it! I actually work at a movie theater so i saw it twice already 😂
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i'm putting these together because they're all related to my thoughts on black adam 2022 and i thought it'd be more convenient for everybody (even if they're wildly antithetic povs)! i absolutely loved black adam and i think i'm gonna see it again quite literally as soon as i can. given that i only got back approx ten minutes ago, here's some jumbled thoughts right off the bat:
i think what makes or breaks a superhero movie is whether the people involved think comic books are beneath them or not (as the folks over at the mcu often seem to do) and black adam certainly loves comic books with its entire heart and soul and you can tell. from various black reign panel recreations to carter's picture perfect thanagarian ship from hawkman 2002, this is a very sincere and earnest movie with none of the parodic tone i so often despise in superhero media.
VISUALLY GORGEOUS. SIMPLY GORGEOUS. the fact that 99.9% of the film takes place in daylight immediately resolves the lighting issue of all modern cinema but lawrence sher (of joker 2019 fame) as cinematographer simply changes the game with this one. in fact, i can say the same thing about the magnificent use of cgi -- cyclone's powers, in particular, are one of the most beautiful things i've ever had the pleasure of seeing in action.
while there are certainly a few things i disagree with, such as carter's estate and kent seemingly having a chauffeur/butler, i think most of the major changes were unavoidable either in a lost in translation sort of way or simply in order to make this movie palpable to average audiences used to marvel. over all, i felt the jsa's dynamic was captured perfectly and what drew me to the team in the first place is very much still there in a way that's definitely absent from stargirl, for example. they're still a horrible little family made up almost exclusively of weird uncles.
SPEAKING OF. AL PRATT? I SCREAMED.
i thought it was made clear that this isn't the entire team but rather just the members carter chose for this particular mission, which i also enjoyed. and while we're here, to touch on some of the points from the anon, i don't think any marvel-style humour was actually present? or at least, it didn't come across that way to me. i mean, it's a very funny film, i was laughing nearly the whole time (or tearing up! or simply absolutely on the edge of my seat!) but it all felt perfectly natural to me, especially in al's case where it's a clear consequence of powers he's obviously still unused to. the relationship between him & carter is actually exactly the element that made me feel a first spark of recognition like.... man i'm seeing my favourite lil comic book guys up there on the big screen.
ALSO THE LEGEND OF CARTER - KENT GAY HOMOSEXUALITY LIVES ON. OLD FRIEND? CARTER CRYING? YES OKAY OKAY I'M ON BOARD. IT'S NOT CARTER IF HE DOESN'T HAVE A BIZARRE WARRIOR BOND WITH SOMEBODY.
considering i was all set on hating this portrayal of kent, i also can't believe how much i ended up completely utterly loving him. the movie definitely has a knack for making you fall in love with its characters nearly instantly (maxine!!!!!!!!! oh maxine!!!!!!!) because it's so well written but kent's random outfit changes for no reason whatsoever, the bit where he's parading around in a dressing gown on carter's ship, "i'm not that kind of doctor", the entire scene in adrianna's apartment... yeah babey. actually i was losing my entire mind at "i remember the day i saw my first aeroplane...", the way pierce plays him might not have been intended to be hilarious but by god, giffen himself couldn't have done a better job. you can tell he's not all there (and i did also enjoy maxine calling him possessed by fate) and it's precisely how kent should be even in the absence of unnatural youth.
the narrative actually allowing carter to be his usual arrogant asshole self-appointed leader with a heart of gold self was also a welcome bonus, i loved seeing him the way he's always been written at his best and i loved that his sharp edges haven't been dulled any by a script that could've easily gone the sanitized route. his black and white thinking is also something that's always been a part of him and i don't think it's necessarily odd to have him say superheroes don't kill -- superheroes certainly don't kill as easily and indiscriminately as black adam does, not even the jsa.
on that point, the jsa's actions are clearly framed to be in the wrong? i loved black adam's arc, i thought mr the rock was acting his little heart out and succeeding like never before but we're also definitely pushed to be on his side to begin with. adrianna and amon are the moral centre of the movie and they certainly stand with black adam! the movie doesn't simply co-opt anti imperialist languages for the hell of it, the jsa is plainly told they're coming here with a us-centric pov and helping nothing & nobody in the name of some nebulous form of justice. i thought it was definitely abundantly clear that the conversation opened around a colonized kahndaq does not condemn adam's actions against intergang etc.
FINALLY, MY THOUGHTS ON THE FATE HELMET AT THE END? HERE'S HOW JARED STEVENS CAN STILL WIN.
this got long enough but god, i really did love it. i loved black adam. i loved the jsa. a respectful, loving, beautiful cinematic adaptation like i never thought we'd ever get.

Horror/Comedy: The most elusive genre of fiction
In many regards, it is easy to consider Horror and Comedy to be about as opposite as two genres can go. Horror seeks to cause dread and fear in the viewers, while comedy (usually) seeks to comfort them and improve their moods. A good comedy can help you feel better after a bad day - a good horror can completely ruin a good one. Maybe this is why these two don’t often collide. Another reason could be that although Comedy is easily combined with other genres, like the RomCom, Horror is hardly ever mixed. More often than not, it just branches out into other kinds of horror, like Psychological horror or Slashers.
However, something that is easy to forget is that Comedy and Horror are far more similar than one would assume. Both rely heavily in misdirection, surprising the viewer with an unexpected result. Both require perfect timing to pull off, and... well, this is not really related to my point here, but both have a tendency to be done reaaally badly when the people making them don’t care. Hack Comedy uses the not-actually-funny shorthand of fart jokes and falling down, while Hack Horror uses the not-actually-scary shorthand of jumpscares and loud sounds. Anyways.
So if they supposedly go hand-in-hand so well, why is it they almost never meet? How come there’s almost no horror/comedy? Well, for starters, they’re each separately extremely difficult to pull off. Making someone laugh is not fucking easy, and neither is scaring someone. They require tremendous amount of talent and effort to do separately, so at the same time? When they already feel opposite? Forget about it! Secondly, it’s already quite difficult to picture something that is equals parts funny and scary. How would you even do that??
The first thing that came to mind when thinking about horror/comedies were those Scary Movie movies. Though I don’t really think they fall into horror territory? They’re not scary at all, they’re just spoof movies. They don’t even come up with their own ideas, they just borrow from popular horror. And they’re not even fucking funny. Comedy (in quotes) with horror elements, not what I’m looking for.
Tumblr media
Then I started looking for artists that are good at making both Comedy and Horror. The one with the biggest audience right now is obviously Jordan Peele. It’s certainly curious to think how he went from making a sketch show to becoming a horror movie director! There’s certainly a conversation to be had about how making the former helped him become better at the latter. Problem is, he either makes one or the other, not both at the same time. So is he what I’m looking for at the moment? Nope!
Tumblr media
Then my mind then went to a favorite of mine: Jack Stauber. His unique way of creating art has allowed him to make both hilarious comedy and touchingly deep horror. His masterpiece Opal is one of the most unique takes on the Horror genre I’ve seen! It’s not only stop-motion, which is quite rare, but a musical, which is even rarer! However, that one’s just horror. What about his individual sketches? The one that got closest to what I’m looking for right now is Future, though it’s... pretty hard to say it’s a joke? I’m sure some people would find it funny, but it’s difficult to say whether it was intended as such.
Tumblr media
Don’t worry though, I didn’t come here just to talk about an idea that I thought of with 0 examples. The whole reason I wanted to make this post talking about Horror/Comedy is because I watched the perfect example, and it made me realize that I hadn’t seen much else quite like it. And the example I watched came... from The Onion
Tumblr media
Although The Onion hasn’t been on its... best streak lately - mostly reposting articles from 7 years ago and making unimpressive TikToks - the Youtube content they created in the late 2000′s early 2010′s was... brilliant. And I don’t mean that as in “funny”, I mean that as in brilliant. Expertly written, produced, and performed layered comedy that drove points home. In The Know with Clifford Banes, and Today Now! being two of my favorite pieces of satire comedy. The Onion also seems particularly qualified to tackle Horror/Comedy, as the heart of their satire was pushing the inherent darkness and cruelty of the 24 hour news cycle to its highest possible, most absurd degree. And tackle it they did, in their 9-episode mini series Porkin’ Across America
Tumblr media
Porkin’ Across America is a parody of travel shows, where Jim Haggerty, host of morning news show Today Now!, travels around the 50 states looking for the best pork he can find. As this happens, his life starts steadily falling apart in the background, unraveling into a grotesque cacophony of errors. This show is, in my opinion, the best example of the Horror/Comedy genre. Because it’s not just comedy with horror elements, or horror with comedy elements: it’s the perfect combination of the two. The setup - misdirection structure that gives both genres their kick is used in tandem, intertwined. Punchlines to jokes are also horrifying revelations and imagery. I won’t spoil the ending, but I’ll just say this: the last line that is uttered is both the hilarious punchline to a series-long running joke, and such a horrible thing to say at that moment that it will send shivers down your spine. I highly recommend watching it, but be warned: the specific type of horror this show uses is body horror. You’ll be laughing, but you’ll also be extremely uncomfortable by the imagery. Definitely avoid this if that’s not your thing.
Tumblr media
Horror/Comedy is one of the rarest genre combinations in fiction, for a variety of reasons. It’s difficult to pull off, horror hardly mixes with other things, and most people don’t even know it can exist. But it can! And when it’s done well it’s an extremely unique experience, one that I believe is worth experiencing.
I hope my explanation of this topic was clear enough, and I’m really excited to hear what you guys think! Can you think of any other work that could be defined with this genre? If so, I’d really like to hear it~
Thank you for reading this whole stupid thing if you did! Yui OUT!

badhaai do (2022)
the movie needed the most
firstly go watch this movie and then come read this, because what. a. movie.
holy shit, is this movie was hilarious with its witty one liners and clever situational comedy! the leads and cast all have great chemistry with each other and the banter feels natural and spontaneous. especially loved the subtle and hilarious dynamic with sundar and rimjim!
i burst into tears 3/4 into this movie. without any spoilers, there is one absolute masterpiece of a scene that gets straight to your heart. this movie understands what is like to be both desi and queer and nails the complex south asian family dynamic without being a stereotype.
the last 20 minutes of the movie is pure QUEER JOY. this is a movie with a happy ending and you, the audience, are entitled to it. you deserve positive representation; you deserve to see healthy and happy lgbt+ relationships.
badhaai do is written FOR queer audiences. the writing and directing does an incredible job of portraying growing with the fear of being queer in an unaccepting environment as well as protraying true self-love and queer joy in finding pride in yourself.
this is such a vital movie. it is NEEDED by queer youth, by older lgbt+ people finding their identity, by allies who want to unlearn homophobia. it is a movie i needed. it’s one i wished i had earlier in my life. it could’ve changed everything for me, but i’m glad it’s out (pun intended) there for other people. because, god knows, desi lgbt+ people need to be seen.

Missing Link(2019):movie review
(Contains minor spoilers)
Tumblr media
As a big fan of Laika films I was excited to see their recent stop-motion work. But after finishing it I felt kinda…let down?To understand as to why I was dissatisfied with Missing Link I decided to divide my impression of this movie into pros and cons.
Pros:
Animation
Tumblr media
Is anyone surprised that Missing Link has one of the most pleasing color palette to look at?Pacific Northwest,California, the boat,Himalayas-every new location has its own theme with it.This film also emphasizes the space of each place the mains go to, so the audience does not get the impression that everything happens in one room, but in the existing terrain. In other words the design here looks convincing and artistic. As for the characters-we can easily depict their personalities from the geometric shapes that they’re based upon, like triangles for the main character-who comes off as bold and charming,or circles for the Sasquatch-good-hearted and a bit oblivious .So yes, they rightfully won the Golden Globe Award for their animation alone.
Action scenes
Tumblr media
Inspired by the adventures of Indiana Jones and Sherlock Homes,it would only make sense if this movie would include well-written fights and escapes. And they sure did!Keeping in mind that the cartoon is made in stop-motion,the ship chase or the ice bridge battle looks even more impressive. The choreography (I don't know if this term can be used for the non-human objects tho) is excellent, so instead of static shots, we see various dangerous situations the characters find themselves in,which glues the viewers to the screen.
Cons:
Jokes
Tumblr media
Missing Link presents itself as an adventure comedy, but the jokes in it come off as iffy. The reason for it is that gags about blowing raspberries and making noises don't fit well with the story, which takes itself quite seriously. There is a dissonance: the funny insertions seem to be intended for a younger audience, while the story itself is for an older one.It looks like the film crew wanted to add some funny phases here and there to lighten up the mood, but it didn’t work out as planned.
The main character
Tumblr media
Despite Mr Link being the symbol of this cartoon,Sir Lionel Frost is the protagonist, since the conflict revolves around his want to be part of “Society of Great Men”.Based on James Bond and similar heroes,Frost fits into the “self-sophisticated but nonetheless good” trope. However, for the majority of the running time he is simply rude and changes his views at the end of the film just because his companion Adelina gave him a talk. The audience rarely sees Lionels positive side, instead we witness his disrespect for Susan and his numerous advances towards Adeline, who might I remind you,is the widow of his deceased friend, and who responded to his flirtations with a no until the boat chase. It would’ve been a good opportunity to condemn or humor his bad actions, but even through Sasquatch and Ms Fortnight point it out a few times, most of the things the main characters says either gets brushed off or is shown in the neutral light. It felt as though Frosts problematic behavior was ignored before making him suddenly compassionate to progress the plot.
Tumblr media
Overall, this movie felt like the weakest among the Laika stop-motion works to me.It’s not exactly bad,but it can’t be compared to ParaNorman or Coraline.Missing Link is alright to watch a few times just for the animation and overall aesthetic of an old explorer films, but that’s it.
(What was your impression of the movie?Feel free to write in the comments section!)

In celebration of the call to explore the known and unknown in our universe (Spaceness), the artist introduced a physical manifestation of one of the most mysterious symbols in the genre of space films: the monolith. An imposing black rectangular form that appears throughout Stanley Kubrick's 1968 film, 2001 Space Odyssey, the monolith has been the subject of many interpretations and heady analysis. Arthur C. Clarke's novel of the same name (which was written as the movie was made) explicitly identifies the monolith as a tool created by an alien race that has been through many stages of evolution, moving from organic forms, through biomechanics, and finally has achieved a state of pure energy. In interviews, Clarke referred to it as "the alien Swiss Army Knife.” Other critics argue that the symbol has been overanalyzed. In his 1968 review of the film “The Monolith and the Message”, Roger Ebert wrote: “But audiences don't like simple answers, I guess; they want the monolith to "stand" for something. Well, it does. It stands for a monolith without an explanation. It's the fact that man can't explain it that makes it interesting. If Kubrick had explained it, perhaps by having some little green men from Mars lower it into place, would that have been more satisfactory? Does everything need an explanation? Some people think so. I wonder how they endure looking at the stars.”
If asked, Stanley Kubrick would argue that the monolith carries no intended significance, but is open for individual interpretation. True to the last spoken line in the film, "Its origin and purpose still a total mystery." Monolith, Lisa ward Photo by Jesse Lortz.

something that does have a real weight of sorrow for me in all these discussions about elvis, and portrayals of elvis, is that ultimately the overwhelming majority is some degree of projection, and that's rarely kept in mind. we don't know for certain how he felt about things which occurred in his life, how he perceived them, internalized them, because he never had the chance to tell his own story. every book written is from the perspective of its teller, whether it comes from love or greed, compassion or condemnation. every script and every actor is an interpretation, and by necessity condensed and fictionalized. whenever someone says something about the feminine view of the coppola movie, i think about how that's not as unusual as they seem to think it is, we have a swath of women's stories about him - linda, ginger, kathy, june, anita, mindi, and so on, they've shared their experiences and perspectives on him, like priscilla has, for decades (and those are remarkably consistent). this isn't me saying they shouldn't, they have the right to share their voices, and those accounts told are what we have as biographical record of him, but still, every individual naturally speaks from a place of personal bias. this is, of course, startlingly true with everything members of the mm have put out there as well.
people keep contrasting the luhrmann film with coppola's, and it's wildly missing the point because they're not even looking through the same lens. as much as i love baz's work and think the film is so affecting and beautiful, it's necessary to remember that elvis is actually NOT the pov character. that's our antagonist, parker. austin's remarkable and empathetic performance is the beating heart of the movie, but in many respects elvis (2022) isn't solely about elvis presley, and it's not supposed to be. it's about the struggle of empty capitalism vs. fulfilling creation and art, it's about exploitation and grief, it's about the upheaval and changing landscape of american culture and how this singular man was used as a lens through which to filter those shifts. his social consciousness is relevant because it's too often overlooked, or ignored altogether, in his legacy, and that, like his passion for music, like his spirituality, was essential to his soul and his artistry, but we also need to see that conflict of parker not having understanding for that hunger and grace because they're positioned as the dichotomy of a transforming age. its aim is focused on his influence and resonance as a performer, which is why it's often grand and kaleidoscopic. when the movie truly, wholly becomes dedicated to elvis is the switch flip during unchained melody. i'd argue, in fact, that's why it's powerful - we spend two and a half hours as an audience by intent, told this story, watching the rise and struggles of this man, but at a bit of a thoughtful remove, guided by the colonel, who doesn't even get why we're there. the colonel who tells us directly elvis' tragedy was love, and only we are allowed to perceive that love was also his triumph. the final moments of the film allow the crossing of that bridge, where it's between us and elvis, and the connection and legacy he left behind.
obviously i haven't seen priscilla (2023) and thus cannot comment on its narrative structure or portrayal, but can say that once again, the human being he was individually isn't intended to be the center. she's the focal point and the pov character and it's necessary to keep that in mind. elvis is the supporting player, no matter how large he may loom, in a story about a young woman's journey into a whirlwind and to self-discovery.
the trouble with all these varying accounts and portrayals, no matter how sensitively or salaciously done, is that elvis presley disappears into Elvis™ in the ensuing discussion. he becomes a cipher for whatever anyone viewing and commenting WANTS him to be - scintillating iconoclast or tragic disaster, brilliant musician or embarrassing hack, generous, pensive soul or overbearing, gauche cautionary tale. all of which easily becomes too simplistic or too judgmental, erasing his personhood and complexity and extraordinary humanism for the quickest possible sound bite.
there's no real point to me saying all this beyond it being something i feel is essential to remember and to process. he never told this in his own words, so we piece every account together (playing detective, as austin said), learn to differentiate the noise and the furor from the quiet, persistent truths, find the spirit of the person he was and his dreams and philosophies and heart that are left behind, that do still captivate and comfort people who listen.
this is why i don't feel like our job is to constantly go to war for him, or to try and prove haters hanging onto their ugliest possible opinions wrong (it hasn't worked for decades), because even in that tumult, threads are lost and value is obscured. it's not our responsibility to rescue his image. loving what he gave us is enough.

Teen Wolf Movie
Yeah, so not unexpectedly, this movie is utter garbage. Like true rotting garbage. I am so mad that during promo they kept touting this as a love letter to the fans. This is not a love letter, it’s complete trash.
I’m sorry Jeff Davis didn’t realize while writing S1 that he wrote Derek Hale as the main character. That he made him interesting and likable, and that the audience instantly fell in love with him. I’m not sorry that his audience didn’t realize Scott was supposed to be the main character.
Derek had an interesting and mysterious backstory, he had amazing chemistry with Stiles, and he actually had a decent character arc.
The fact that the audience loved him more than who Jeff Davis intended and feels was the main character, does not mean he should have been treated this terribly.
Honestly, this movie is the worst trash I’ve ever seen. It forgot basic plot points of its own tv show, like the fact once Derek evolved he didn’t have blue eyes anymore. It introduced a new character and told us absolutely nothing about her. The entire plot made zero sense, I really mean zero sense. Mr. Harris coming back from the dead and having a vendetta against Scott was the dumbest shit. And honestly, Allison coming back from the dead, made no sense either.
The fact that Derek has a 15 year old child with absolutely no explanation as to with who is so weird. That Derek sacrifices himself also makes no sense. Like of all the people there Derek is the person with the least reason in this zero sense plot that should have sacrificed himself. And it is SO cruel, to have him die by fire after his whole family burned to death. There is just so much wrong here, I don’t think I have the words to describe it.
I will say this though, if Jeff Davis thinks killing off Derek Hale, and not having Stiles in the movie at all is going to stop Sterek fans from writing even more Sterek fic he is sorely mistaken. The Sheriff essentially says Derek had feelings for Stiles. He tows the jeep back when it broke down (he helps Stiles after Lydia dumped him), fixes the jeep up and keeps it running (he and Stiles are there for each other and rely on other). If that isn’t a metaphor, I don’t know what is. I predict so much Sterek fic written about them between the last we saw of them in the show and the movie. Also, Eli, basically filled in the comic relief Stiles used to supply (though definitely not as well as Dylan O’Brien), but to me that means Eli is so clearly influenced by Stiles’ sense of humor.

Wish (The things it did wrong, and the things it did right)
Tumblr media
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays. Welcome back to the House of Milesverse, our place for comic book and fiction talk. Today we are taking a slight detour to Disney's animated catalog.
2023 was an explosion of Disney hype and joy, due to celebrating 100 years since the company's inception. It was a year full of laughs, and shared memories. On top of this, a short film was produced to commemorate the franchise's anniverary.
Today we will be talking about Wish, an animated film that released in November of that year. The movie focused on a young girl wanting to set loose the wishes of her kingdom, kept captive by an evil king. She's joined by her plucky goat, and a hyperactive star that can grant wishes.
Wish was written off by many people, and considered an animation blunder by Disney fans. It failed to live up to the hype of people that expected differently than Disney's usual service. Some people however have found the film to be a fun, but far more average, experience.
Today we will go over the things Wish did right, and the things Wish did wrong.
The things it did right:
Right from the start, there's some key points to address in what Wish did right. Of the two opinions I mentioned, I agree with the latter choice. Wish is not a terrible film, but it is just a mildly okay one. What it has is genuinely good material that hits well.
Star plays well as a typical mascot:
Tumblr media
The bright and speedy Star is our mascot (or one of two) for the film. He arrives in a blur to answer Asha's troubles. His arrival, however, is what kickstarts much of the film's conflict. The main antagonist, King Magnifico, wants Star for his power.
He's your typical Disney mascot character whose built for the audience to like him. Think Olaf from Frozen, a cute snowman whose made many a fan. Star plays into that exact demographic with his adorable, bright design.
I find Star's appearance to be infectious because of this. I could not help but laugh at some of his actions throughout the film. Plus he's an expert at granting wishes. Think of him like the silly Genie from Aladdin, but without Robin Williams' sheer charisma.
Asha dreams of adventure:
Tumblr media
Our main protagonist is the kind and wishful (pun intended) Asha, voiced by Ariana DeBose. At first, Asha desires for the king to grant her grandfather's wish for his 100th birthday. However after it is declined, Asha's new goal becomes setting the captive wishes free.
I like Asha's motivations, because of how they are rooted in the idea of wishes. She just wants the best for everyone, and for them to experience it on their own. Asha fits into the Disney heroine mold, due to her compassion, bravery, and the driving force behind her goals.
It was a common misconception before release that Asha should have been the villain. People believed that her goals made her evil, or just plain irresponsible. She wanted to set all the wishes free, even including the 'dangerous' ones. Luckily, the film skips over these ideas completely, and for good reason, too.
The Teens are a reference that works well:
Tumblr media
Moving on from our starry-eyed protagonist is her large cast of friends. Collectively known as the 'Seven Teens', they get up to funny shenanigans. Their antics and personalities never feel dry during the movie's run.
Beyond comedy relief, the seven teens are all distinct are distinct in a way. They are one of the few references from Disney media that I think actually work. The teens are, obviously, all based off of one of the Seven Dwarves. This callback from Disney's first real 'princess' film to its current one acts as a solid reference.
In addition, the teens also have a stake in the plot and offer tension to the story. They help their friend out, even when she's been ratted out as a traitor. Their personalities all shine through during the final act of the film.
Overall, the Seven Teens each have a counterpart in one of the Dwarves. These include:
Dahlia (Doc)
Simon (Sleepy)
Hal (Happy)
Gabo (Grumpy)
Bazeema (Bashful)
Dario (Dopey)
The things it did wrong:
Magnifico falls short as a villain:
Tumblr media
Brought to life by Chris Pine, King Magnifico is the main antagonist of the film. As mentioned before, he is the tyrannical ruler of Rosas, who harbors the wishes of its people for his own power. Magnifico is a narcissist who is only willing to grant wishes if he can benefit from it.
Magnifico's entire concept was meant to play toward the 'old' Disney villains. People have long enjoyed villains like Jafar from Aladdin, Maleficent from Sleeping Beauty, Scar from the Lion King, and more. Magnifico's personality, his lust for power, and even his green magic all call to mind traits associated with old Disney villains.
However, our untrustworthy king falls short in many ways. As a villain, Magnifico's transition to evil can come off as rushed. Much less time is spent on who he was before gaining his position. He spends a good deal of the plot hounding Star for its cosmic power.
You can say this for other villains in the franchise as well. However, I find that Magnifico suffers the most from this. He already has an interesting background set up in the story, but nothing is done with it.
In the past, Magnifico came from a loving family. He lived in peaceful lands until greedy thieves attacked. They killed his family and traumatized him. He wanted to learn magic so that he could use it to defend himself, and others.
Magnifico's worst qualities are always seen upfront throughout the movie. There is no lie that he's the 'bad guy' of the series. There's also nothing wrong with him being the main antagonist. However, Magnifico could benefit from gaining more sympathetic traits to better round out his character.
This is not me asking that he be a fully 'sympathetic villain' who was never evil to begin with. Instead, I believe that Disney had the option to still make him more complex. More than that, it would also make his transition to evil less jarring for some viewers.
Asha is another victim of the 'adorkable' trope:
Tumblr media
Over the years we have seen heroines from Disney evolve. Starting with Rapunzel in 2013, most of them were much quirkier. This is what many refer to as the 'adorkable' trope. Characters who are socially awkward or unappealing but in a cute way.
Rapunzel, Mirabel, Moana, and Anna are all characters who use this idea in one way or another. They are put in awkward or quirky situations which also leads to easy laughs. I think it's worth noting that all of them use it well, at least.
With Rapunzel, she had never seen the outside world since she was a child. Mirabel's awkwardness came from her own feelings relating to her family. Both Moana and Anna are adorkable in their own ways, but neither of them is overwhelmed by the trope.
Asha feels like she is always on the verge of it. She's clumsy, nervous, and also awkward at times. I think this is a scenario where Asha didn't need these 'traits'. As adorkable as she can be, she already has a great narrative. Asha is compassionate, and you can feel how much she cares for her people.
The story hinges too much on the past:
Tumblr media
This is my own personal issue with Wish itself. Wish is a good story on its own, but it also relies on references from the past. The story is full of references to Disney media.
Some references worked in the story, however. The Seven Teens for example, were integrated well into the world. Asha's basic 'cloak' is a reference to the Fairy Godmother's garb, and it blends so well into her design. Magnifico's magic is green, calling to mind past Disney sorcerors and villains.
These are references that feel natural to the story because of how they are positioned. Everything else just feels like it's for the sake of being there. The references are there to feed you, meal after meal. However, like any person eating the same meal, you eventually just get tired of it.
The Music:
Tumblr media
Wish's music is my favorite part of the film. Every sequence in the movie is loaded with loving tunes. I just can't help but smile whenever I hear the opening of "This Wish" or "This is The Thanks I Get?".
The songs partway carry the film for me because of how bombastic they are. The visuals help hammer in the Disney magic that you are used to. Each tune is filled with so many amazing sequences that you just won't get tired of seeing it.
The credit for this lies in musician Julia Michaels, and Benjamin Rice. Joined by JP Saxe, they helped create Asha's powerful anthem. The score of the movie was meanwhile composed by Disney's notable orchestrator, David Metzger. Metzger had also done work on other films such as Frozen, Wreck-It Ralph, Moana, and Tarzan.
Overall consensus: Wish is a movie that tried. And failed. But maybe that's okay?
Tumblr media
Wish is a film that tries to do too much, and that only hinders it. It's a movie that tries to be a large, huge spectacle. It is Disney's celebration of the fans with all these easter eggs and hidden catches. That aspect is where Disney loses its magic, and it is what hurts the film.
Wish is so caught up in being the ultimate milestone celebration that it forgets to be a movie. Everything about Wish, when it is focused on its own story, adds charm and substance. The concept of how Wishes work, as aspects of real people, is brilliant.
The nature of the film alone created a lot of hype for fans. People were expecting a much bigger ordeal than what they got from the film. Because of this, it was guaranteed to create dismayed reactions from those same fans.
This is not to say the film is terrible or that it has no purpose. Wish is a beautiful-looking film that is just alright. That on its own, is what makes the film entertaining to me.
Wish is a flawed film, but one that I enjoyed nonetheless. It is a movie carried by its bright cast. I would recommend that you see the movie for yourself, instead of listening to other people. That way, you can form your own opinion on the movie.

Wendell & Wild (2022, dir. Henry Selick) - review by Rookie-Critic
Tumblr media
Wendell & Wild was a wonderful stop-motion animated film with one of the best soundtracks of 2022 and a story that, while nothing spectacularly new, was wildly entertaining and full of Halloween heart. The newest from Coraline and The Nightmare Before Christmas visionary Henry Selick from a script co-written by Selick and Jordan Peele, Wendell & Wild follows Kat, an orphaned girl who, failed by the system, is dumped into a school for girls as a part of a juvenile detention rehabilitation program (the headmaster of which is very much just in it for the funding it gives to his school). Shortly after arriving, Kat starts to notice strange powers arising within her, and sees two demons (the titular Wendell & Wild, played by none other than Keegan-Michael Key & Peele) that tell her they can bring her parents back if she'll summon them to the land of the living. It of course is a bit more complicated than that, but there's your bird's eye view.
The cast of this film is a nice mix of a few veteran names alongside a slurry of fresh talent, and almost all of the newer names give fantastic performances. I'll note that a couple of the performances felt very wooden, and stood out all the more because of the phenomenal job being done by the rest of the cast. Another win for this film is its commitment to positive representation with a number of characters, the most prominent of which being the trans character Raúl. Outside of a handful of moments where the fact that Raúl is trans are brought up, the character is allowed to exist and not have his whole character defined by his gender, but rather by his loyalty and artistry. It just really seems like a lot of love and care went into making sure his character, as well as other characters representative of a marginalized group, were not portrayed as a token character of that group, but just as another character in the movie, who are fully realized personalities that are not just pigeonholed into "the trans character" or "the disabled character." That effort did not go unnoticed and I applaud Selick and Peele for making that happen. I'll also applaud this film for daring to be dark and go places that a traditional "family friendly" film wouldn't and discuss themes that most studios would say are "too mature" for a younger audience. Discussing death and loss in such a direct way, and especially framing that loss as a child losing both of their parents at an intensely young age, is a bold move on Selick's part. He, of course, is no stranger to darker themes, having made movies like Coraline, but somehow Wendell & Wild feels more grounded, more real in its depiction of death, even though it still has a foot firmly planted in the darkly fantastical, and I appreciate a movie that's willing to give a younger demographic a little more credit and give them the exposure to mature themes with the idea that they can understand and handle them.
Now it's time to give a shout out to the biggest pro this film has in its corner: the soundtrack. The needle drops in this film are insanely well done with near Guardians of the Galaxy levels of style and precision, with a track list mostly consisting of punk rock music from the late 70s/early 80s, but that ventures into alternative rock acts like TV on the Radio, and even throws in some ska for good measure. Every track hits as intended when it plays in the film, and I could not be more of a fan. If this collection of songs were available for purchase on vinyl or even CD, I'd be first in line to buy it. This one's been at the back of my head, buried in my much-neglected "streaming watch list," ever since it dropped on Netflix back in late October, and I'm glad I finally took the time to sit down and check it out.
Score: 9/10
Currently streaming on Netflix.

PINA - "Seasons march" clip - amazing movie for Pina Bausch by Wim Wenders!

3-D Tribute to Artistic Impulse
By A.O. Scott
Dec. 22, 2011
One of the interesting and unexpected film stories of 2011 is about 3-D, which simultaneously lost commercial potency and gained artistic credibility. Those who dismiss the format as the industrial gimmick (and excuse for price gouging) that it frequently is may need to reconsider now that a handful of certified auteurs have given it a try. Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorsese, grand old men of baby-boomer Hollywood, have made 3-D children’s tales (“The Adventures of Tintin” and “Hugo”), which is certainly noteworthy. More remarkable, perhaps even astonishing, is that Werner Herzog and Wim Wenders, stalwarts and survivors of the iconoclastic New German Cinema of the 1970s, have used 3-D in new documentaries.
Mr. Herzog’s “Cave of Forgotten Dreams” and Mr. Wenders’s “Pina” are explorations of the artistic impulse, primordial and postmodern. “Pina” is a tribute to Pina Bausch, the German dancer and choreographer who died in 2009. Her work has appeared on film before; Pedro Almodóvar’s “Talk to Her” uses the dance “Café Müller” as an emotional touchstone. That piece, an obstacle course of wooden chairs and wild emotions set to music by Henry Purcell, figures prominently in “Pina,” encapsulating both Bausch’s aesthetic and Mr. Wenders’s desire to replicate on screen the depths and distances of the staging. A Photo Slide Show of Bausch’s Work
The dances in “Pina” take place on traditional stages and also on city sidewalks and tram cars (in Wuppertal, the northwestern German city where Bausch’s company is based), in forests and fields and, thanks to an especially ingenious coup de cinema, in what looks like a portable box. Alternating between highly stylized, precise gestures — of hands, fingers and faces as well as torsos and limbs — and more flowing and expressive movements, the dancers enact dramas of desire, sexual violence and the passage of time.
The cumulative effect is exhilarating and also a bit frustrating, since so many dances are included and woven together the audience does not have the chance to experience any single work in its entirety. But the power and intelligence of Bausch’s approach, which at times seems more cerebral than sensual, is communicated. And there are moments when her discipline and Mr. Wenders’s visual instincts harmonize perfectly, so that instead of enduring yet another well-meaning specimen of “dance on film” you are experiencing dance and film, fully and simultaneously.
In addition to the performances, “Pina” includes interviews with dancers, their words dubbed over their silent, contemplative faces. Instead of talking heads, they are thinking bodies, reflecting on the influence of their mentor. Their devotion to Bausch is evident, though the glowing tributes they offer also suggest that, like many charismatic artists, she cultivated something of a cult of personality. Diverse in age, body type and background, the dancers — speaking French, Russian, Portuguese, Japanese and other languages — convey their awe and gratitude in notably similar terms. “Pina used to say, ‘Be more crazy.’ ” “Pina used to say, ‘Surprise me.’ ” This is touching, but it leaves any analysis of her creative process and the ideas that drove it shrouded in a mist of generality.
But criticism is not really what Mr. Wenders intends. Choreography is a notoriously perishable art. Dances often struggle to outlive their creators. And “Pina” is, above all, an act of preservation, a memorial that is also a defiance of mortality — completely alive in every dimension.
