pochita/chainsaw devil and my personal thought about how fujimoto kinda subvert the cutesification of violence trope in animanga

thinking about pochita and his true devil form again and even if fujimoto did not intentionally wanna subvert the whole "beautiful girls with terrifying power" thing, he ended up doing just that with pochita as chainsaw devil... from my personal view, at least

from what i've seen, currently there's this... trend of cute girls possessing terrifying power in animanga, and how those girls actually possess these terrifying forms that shows how inhuman they are, but because the story shows that they're still those cute girls within so it's a lot easier for their powers and actions to be digested without caring too much about the consequences of their actions

a 100 year old vampire who look like a cute loli is still a cute loli even if she did killed a lot of people before... you know?

but then we got pochita in chainsaw man.

i still remember that one fanart of pochita as this little girl, and to me that's proof of the trend, that it's easier for audience to digest terrible act of violence in media these days if there's a sympathetic character that commits it, in this case, a cute little creature like pochita, or... what people want to believe is pochita, a cute loli girl.

well, surprisingly, fujimoto didn't actually went onto that route (he did it with power already) with pochita but rather, he revealed that pochita's true form is just as terrifying as his name is to every single demons that existed on hell and on earth. and his true form also makes his whole reason to be close to denji, to the point of sacrificing himself, even stronger. because ofc no one can and want to hold a humongous demon who will cut everything that's within its grasp. a demon with chainsaws as its limbs, even when chainsaw devil wants to help it'll still leave a trail of blood and corpses behind.

and after the reveal of pochita's true form, it really contextualized everything that happen between pochita, denji and makima. makima, the one that only sees chainsaw devil for what it can be, just a tool. and denji, the brash little kid who sees pochita for who he is, a friend. so in some ways, pochita's true form not being a cute girl but rather a nightmare-inducing creature did subvert the trend of moe in animanga, which also makes chainsaw man as a shonen manga, refreshing in its own ways. also it makes much more sense for a nightmare-induced creature who had fucking... chainsaws for limbs to be deprived of love rather than an attractive young girl who seem pretty normal on the outside you know?

but this is not me saying i hate the cute-sify violence trope thing, i think it works in certain genre and as long as the character and story is interesting i'll enjoy it.

but i think in chainsaw man's case, it's refreshing to see a manga that did something pretty unorthodox at the time.

How the chainsaw man girls handle jealousy

Makima

Thanks to you, makima, now could finally feel true emotions. You made her feel the happiness of being truly loved, the sadness of being without you, anger when a devil had the gall to hurt you, and the worry of when you came injured from a mission and so on..

She felt another one of those emotions when she saw you talking to another girl at the public safety headquarters, a particularly flirty one who apparently didn't know you were dating her boss.

Ah this must be jealousy.

She wasn't that bothered by it. She knows she can trust that you'll never leave her. However, the moment she starts touching you even after you clearly rejected her and is making you feel uncomfortable, that girl is dead.

She might have better morals after meeting you but she's not above killing who she deems as human scum.

But if things don't reach that stage, the girl might just be assigned a particularly difficult mission as her next

"Sorry, but I have a girlfriend,"

"Who cares? It's not like she's gonna know anyway"

"Sorry to interrupt, but I'd like to talk to y/n"

The moment she sees you talking to another girl, she gets mad, she assumes you're cheating on her cause she doesn't have that much of an understanding of relationships.

In her eyes, you don't need anyone else when she's clearly the best option.

She's also really angry towards the girl. How dare she try to steal what's hers? Even though she wasn't flirting with you

How she reacts depends on how drunk she is.

She gets really clingy when she is drunk, so she'll hug you from behind and lazily try to pull you away from the girl you were talking to while mumbling some incoherent words and that's usually your sign to take her home.

She's really not that jealous when sober, even when a girl flirts, she doesn't get mad, she understands her,after all if she didn't flirt with you she wouldn't have gotten with her amazing partner.

"Hey, you having fun without me over here?

"Oh sorry hime,I was just about to tell her I have a girlfriend"

"Oh you do? Sorry I had no idea"

"It's fine. I get it they're so stunning anyone would try to get with them"

This poor nervous wreck of a girl.

Whenever she sees you talking to another girl, she kinda gets anxious and starts comparing herself to that girl. Imagine how it is when a girl actually flirts with you

She starts overthinking and sweating,thoughts that you're gonna leave her for the other girl and how she's a bad girlfriend her fill her head.

She'd rather self combust than try to confront the girl with you around so she'll just continue wallowing in self-pity until you finish.

She needs a lot of hugs and reassurances later to calm down

She is also kind of anxious and worried just way less than kobeni.

She feels kind of like a bad and boring girlfriend often, and that feeling skyrockets when a girl flits with you.

She trusts you, but seeing you so close to that girl while she blatantly flirts with you just makes her feel kinda angry at her, and yoru definitely tries to take advantage of that.

"Come on don't you wanna get rid of her anyway"

"Just turn her into a weapon, that way I get a new one to fight chainsaw man, and you get to take care of that bitch"

She didn't think much about it maybe you were just talking to a friend. So she ignored the kinda weird feeling in her chest by doing her favorite thing (tied with spending time with you) eating.

The girl, meanwhile, was very freaked out that a random girl was staring at her with a cold glare and ringed eyes so she left allowing you to go back to your girlfriend.

"It's fine, who was that girl you were with?

"I don't know she just came up to me and started flirting"

"I see"

HIMENO

her dating another devil hunter is probably for the best.

— I can picture Himeno having many failed relationships just because she's a devil hunter. In the world of Chainsaw Man, the occupation is not exactly viewed in a positive light, so normally most civilians would like to avoid devil hunters or devil hunters hoping for a life outside of work would keep it a secret from others.

— Himeno, in my opinion, wouldn't attempt to keep this part of her life hidden and would be open about it.

— It doesn't really matter if you work in the same division or a different one then her; Himeno knows a lot of people in the industry and I can imagine her socializing outside of hers frequently, where she would eventually meets you :)

— I dunno, it just works with you being a devil hunter.

— She doesn't have to worry about you interrogating her extensively or being excessively concerned about her well being as an average person would.

— Simply because you are familiar with her situation. You've walked in her shoes and you don't judge her "recklessness" or "rashness", and that bare minimum means a lot to her. 

— Himeno would also compare you a lot to Aki. Those qualities she loves in you, I think she probably also loved in Aki as well. In addition to the fact that you're a devil hunter, like Aki, I think she would just feel this way generally in a relationship. A rebound if you would. Someone like Aki.

— Although she would never express these thoughts out loud to you, you may notice this with time in your relationship and may cause future complication.

now you getting hurt on duty is a mix and mix.

— A while back, I actually wrote a one-shot about Himeno visiting an acquaintance in the hospital or something? I remember portraying her as being quite calm and casual when she entered the hospital. I think she would act similarly to this with her significant other.

— Hospitals are nothing Himeno is unfamiliar with, and neither should they be to you. Hospital visits are typical, common, and anticipated given the occupations you both have. Along with death always being a possibility.

— Hell, the possibility of dying of a Devil attack as a civilian alone is typical so deaths of devil hunter’s, who actively pursue these spawns from Hell, are even more common.

— When walking into your room she would be calm and no worry on her explicitly face. Serene cause you lived.

— She would torment you and make fun of you until your face flames. Though after her teasing and it's time for you to come home, she'll take care of you, tenderly. Doing your house chores, feeding you, and tending to your wounds. 

— Himeno sort of views these times together as brief dates. Other than passing each other off at work or whatever, you don't spend much time together on actual dates. So, these days of sickness and recuperation are full of fluff.

KISHIBE

him dating a devil hunter is expected.

— I believe that only another devil hunter can really comprehend Kishibe, grasp his thoughts, and truly understand why he is the way he is and why he behaves in the manner in which he does, you know?

— So again, it's expected. If Kishibe is gonna be in a relationship its likely gonna be with another devil hunter.

— This relationships, though, would undoubtedly not develop overnight. It would take some time for you two, colleagues, to choose to part ways from your employment relationship. Maybe a few years as co-workers before taking that step. However in that time it gives more certainty to the both of you of your feelings for one another.

— You grow to learn his mind, and him, yours.

— With you both being devil hunters means you share a few outlooks and habits that civilians may find unusual. Kishibe also considers it's a good thing that you're a devil hunter since you don't nag him about it the way any of his exes did.

now you getting hurt on duty is, also, expected.

— It simply comes with the territory. You didn't die so...

— Both of you are aware of your mortality and the extremely high death rate in your professions. Furthermore, Kishibe is more cognizant of this part of the work. I kind of imagine him being in the game longer then you.

— The majority of the time, you get wounded, and he has to take care of you. Mostly due to Kishibe's stubbornness, which causes him to brush off injuries and not view them as anything that requires your help. Your injuries on the other hand? Yep, you need him to deal with that.

— He is virtually as knowledgeable about treating most of these injuries as a first responder, so that is also incredibly helpful in situations like this too.

— Kishibe uses all of the time he has for your recuperation even though he is sometimes too busy at work to devote his entire day to caring for your injuries.

— Throughout the day, he would call you while he's out to see how you're handing, to make sure you were eating properly, washing your wounds at the proper time, and generally healing without any problems.

— He might not stay with you during your ENTIRE recovery or make it to the hospital before it's time for you to go home, but he will be there that night to help you, and that will be more than enough for the vast majority.

MAKIMA

her dating a devil hunter is “controversial,” technically…

— She would technically be your superior, though. No matter what division you are in, she is practically still in a more advantageous position than you.

— You would think it would spark a controversy, yet nobody actually challenges it. Mostly because no one cared about the devil hunters workplace and because the profession itself is so crooked. Therefore, you dated with no issue.

— You and Makima would not hide the fact that you are in a relationship. In any case, she wouldn't tell you to not tell people about your relationship with her or anything.

— Tell everyone, she doesn't mind, be public about it.

— However, you know better then to be touchy in public.

— That's her only rule. That you can't touch her in public, especially at work or anything like that. She wouldn't want to be viewed in that way in her respected position at hand.

— And you respect her, so you know better then to not.

now you getting hurt on duty is anticipated.

— You aren’t in a position of power and strength like Makima, as I have mentioned before, so she merely anticipated that you would sustain injuries regularly.

— However, it's as if you hurt yourself at the worst times.

— It's always when she doesn't have a moment to spare for you when you need her the most. Makima is a busy woman and a career woman, so when you get injured, it irritates her a little and she makes her desire to persuade you to quit your work and remain at home, but doing so would cause further problems that she is more so unable to deal with.

— She won't be around much while you're recovering. As soon as she learns that you've been injured she may stop by later that day to examine how serious your injuries are and whether you're still alive, but as soon as she's done assessing the issue, she resumes working.

— In place of her visits, gifts and flowers with little notes inside would be given to you practically every day. It was difficult for you to be frustrated over her absence because the letters were so sincerely written and wished you well.

God damn, if I sound disinterest in any of these ships, I am sorry. But fucking Qrow and Raven makes the already lackluster dynamic of STRQ worse, on so many levels. We already have shit with Tai and Summer, and Qrow is fucking bloating the cast up with his whiny ass. I'll get to Raven later.

Back to the ship, I just do not like Qrow at all, and Summer's latest information dump makes her so weird as an entity. Did she straight up LIED to her husband, who she knows was emotionally destroyed by the same bitch she's about to team up with? Or did she truly not know about her demise because she was overconfident in her own abilities against Salem?

And the emblem never fucking made sense, because before V9, there's nothing much that can tell us about Summer as a person or even an active force in Ruby's life aside from some "tell, not show" from Yang and Qrow. None of that alluded to the rose emblem or how it affected Ruby as person when her mother disappeared.

These two characters literally have nothing that makes me care about them as individuals, let alone fucking partners in a relationship. Not to mention, rabid Hummingbird stans are just as annoying as Bee/s when it comes to Tai. Guys, Qrow doesn't need to be Ruby's bio parent for them to have a strong bond, stop diminishing Tai's already tiny role from her life to push your ship. I cannot stand Qrow's whiny ass as it is right now, having him be an active absentee parent like his twin will make me hate him more.

Phoenix (Taiyang x Raven)

Same reasoning here for these two, with Tai as Summer and Raven as Qrow. Raven need to stay the fuck away from Tai, and this is coming from a person who eat up toxic dynamics for lunch.

Raven is just insufferable, and fans can make her more complex than canon ever can. But because we never know why she canonically abandoned her family, including her infant daughter, Raven just comes off as a shallow, selfish bitch who would hang with criminals who hit on her child than be with the people who love her despite her past.

If that was the case, FINE. Whatever, but then the show goes on to villainize Ozpin and blaming him for her reasons to leave. If Raven was scared of Ozpin, why did she team up with someone directly working for his antithesis, Salem? Then Lost Fables comes out, and it turns out Ozpin didn't even curse her and Qrow with magic, because they kept transforming willy-nilly with no consequences at all. Blame Salem for your issues if you want to avoid your responsibilities, you bitch.

And Tai...poor Tai. He's not a perfect parent, but goddamn he is the BEST when you use the likes of Jacques, Raven or even Ghira as comparisons. Yet he was villainized by the FNDM and Qrow is heralded as a good adult figure for Ruby when it was TAI who raised them for most of their lives. No one has to like Tai and his parenting can be criticize, but he is not the worse parent ever when fucking Salem is still around.

So yeah. Not my fav. Like, at all. And I deadass can make a better storyline for them as individuals and as a dynamic.

Snapdragon (Taiyang x Summer)

Oh man...again, the fucking reveal for Summer in V9 truly diminished a good majority of my enjoyment of this ship. Again, if Summer KNEW about her demise, she willingly left her husband with their children to go with someone who betrayed them both, not even thinking about how he would take losing ANOTHER person he love.

I just enjoy fanon so much more for them, because there Summer and Tai are actually treated with respect. For example, my moot @bunbunsophy made an amazing art piece of evil!Summer inspired by Makima from Chainsaw Man, and it was an amazing foundation for an AU where Summer manipulated everyone around her to her desires, especially Tai. It create this angsty goodness where he has become her toy, heartbroken but broken as well to do her biddings with no will to fight back because he loves her. This is his wife, mother of his daughters, and without her Taiyang will be alone.

Literally ANYTHING would've made this ship interesting, but canonically, they're bland as fuck.

Rosebird (Raven x Summer)

Fuck Rosebird shippers who refuse to include trans!Raven or trans!Summer into the dynamic in order to make Yang and Ruby. Do not fucking breathe near me.

Other than that; same shit as Hummingbird, but so much worse. Raven is a bitch, and it was clear in V9 that Summer cannot stand her ass. Not to mention that stupid ass panel in the DC crossover comic where bird Raven shat on Summer to Ruby. Like bitch, that is mad rich for you to judge Summer as a person WHEN YOU ABANDONED YOUR OWN CHILD. Fuck her.

Personally, I like the take where they were partners in Beacon instead of being Tai or Qrow's, because the betrayal between them will feel more personal like the boys' instead of "we were in the same team and she hurt the two men we both care about and I'm just here." I'm not saying that they can't be friends outside of partnership, but the partnership creates this unique bond that neither shares with Tai and Qrow; Summer trusted Raven to watch her back in battle, Raven grew close to her as a friends and someone she will die for, they know each other's fighting style to a detailed level and played off of each other so well that it's almost tragic when Raven left.

And when that scene in V9 happened, you feel that bitterness from Summer so much more because this was her partner who preferred something bad more than her. Maybe then I'll lean into this ship more, but right now it doesn't spark the least bit of joy.

TaiQrow/Mourning Dove (Taiyang x Qrow)

Same sentiment here; I just don't care about Qrow because he's a terrible character, and Tai barely got anything to himself.

But holy hell, going off of the partnership AU between them, the fallout between these two would've been tragically beautiful; they understand each other in ways neither Summer or Raven could, and at the end of it all they were the only ones left behind. But because of the pain left behind for them, they grow apart even though it kills them everytime they raised their voice, every time Qrow pick up another bottle after Tai begged him to stop, every time Qrow had to snap Tai out of his depression for his girls and yet Tai cannot shine as brightly as he could anymore.

All that was left was resentment, burying a layer of hope that will always yearn for the THEM of before, or at least something close enough because they still love each other.

But canon hates them and they hate us more. So you know.

Fluff, slight angst

If you know Angle you know that my poor boy can’t touch people. As much as he plays it off I truly believe that when he gets into a relationship, that issue becomes his biggest insecurities. That’s why he doesn’t date… well then you came along.

Obviously he won’t say anything, but the feeling of annoyance he gets when he sees you laughing at jokes made by other HUMANS.. pain.

When you start dating he needs reassurance. Obviously he can’t give you any sort of skin touch in any kind of way. Using plastic gloves or anything that will put a layer of protection between you two is obviously the only option for anything…take that as you will. He would love to be able to hold you without any glows, but he also wants you to live. Like I said.. reassurance.

What if you get bored because of all the rules you two need to follow or you will simply fall out of love because of the lack of skinship? He hates seeing you hugging others without a care in the world yet needing to be careful if you want to hug him. He hates that he can’t kiss you. He hates that he can’t give you things a normal partner would. He hates that he can’t give you things a human partner would give you.

Giving him hugs while he's wrapped in a blanket is one of the closest things to a normal hug for you two. Also one of the best ways to give him confort. Also ice cream… give him ice cream. That’s one way to comfort him.

“But you deserve someone who can give you all of the affection you deserve.” He said while sitting on the couch wrapped in a blanket.

“I knew what I was signing up for when I agreed on dating you, you know?” You said while sitting down on the couch next to him while handing him a hot drink. “How about you trust me on what I want and need, okay?”

Was Alucard the one to turn Bathory???

OHOHOHOOOOOO I DO LOVE THAT PEOPLE ARE THEORIZING ABOUT MY HELLSING FIC NOW srsly this is so flattering tysm for asking this omg... Lesions spoilers under the cut for those who care!

To answer your question: no, Alucard was not the one to turn Bathori.

Having said that, this is an EXCELLENT theory and it made my head spin for a second over how little I had considered the idea previously. After a great deal of consideration, the answer is definitely still 'no,' but not for the reasons you might think.

I wanted Alucard and Erzsebet to be equals, and for their past friendship to be based in a mutual sense of understanding and respect. If there were a fledgling-and-master relationship between either party, it would introduce a power dynamic that would sunder the core message of what their story is about. I didn't want Erzsebet to be a toxic ex-girlfriend, or an estranged fledgling, or a past mate that Alucard once had who betrayed him or he betrayed her, or something of the sort. The reality is much more drab and depressing than any of that.

They were simply toxic codependent best friends who had a shared trauma that each party understood implicitly, due to both Alucard and the real-life Erzsebet Bathori having suffered (probably) childhood assault.

As time went on, and Dracula's persona gave way to Alucard and healthier relationships with people like Integra and eventually Seras and Zemira, he drifted away from a friendship that he now recognized as mutually detrimental and became uninterested in their bond. Because if Alucard is nothing else, he's transient. He doesn't consider for a second that someone might actually grow upset by his lack of regard for the fact that people actually want him in their lives.

In the most fucked up sense of things, I almost want to compare Dracula and Erzsebet to Denji and Power from Chainsaw Man??? Weirdly?? Because they were both immature, petty little assholes who felt their trauma justified any of the atrocities they committed together, and unlike their shonen points of comparison, they didn't have any drive to improve or get better. They were unhealthy codependent friends with way too much emotional entanglement, and only pushed one another further into their depressive and self-destructive spirals of bloodlust and hyper-defensiveness. Did they attempt to be together at some point? Maybe. If they did, it fizzled out almost immediately, because there's no attraction there.

And when Alucard grew past his trauma, and thereby grew out of his friendship to Bathori, it hit her in the face like a runaway freight train.

And oh, she did not like that implication. She did not like the sensation that her past best friend now thinks he's too good for her. She loathes the suggestion that, like him, she should just throw her trauma over her shoulder and suck it up and start kissing human ass in the name of "purpose" or whatever. Alucard is now driven by duty, but Erzsebet stayed in that childish space of pursuing whimsy and amusement.

Thus, their dynamic is defined by an original starting point of being relative equals. While Dracula, being the elder of the two, always harbored more raw physical strength, Erzsebet is no slouch either and underestimating her would be a truly costly mistake. Even Alucard now would hesitate to fight her.

13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim - AMAZING cast of characters and fun gameplay I didn’t want to stop playing, great plot I will be thinking about forever…

Bugsnax - very funny and cute and I loved catching every bugsnax and the fun characters I want to play the 2nd one when it comes out

Psyconauts - a cult classic for a reason. Loved it’s style but the final level is so bad I would not wish it upon my worst enemy. Looking forward to finishing 2 one day

Xenoblade Chronicles 3 - I haven’t gotten to finish this one yet (I got 80 hours in okay??) but I’m incredibly excited to get back to it. GOTY BABY!!! GAME OF ALL TIME!!

Nier Automata - ALSO THE GAME OF ALL TIME this is a must play it broke me it healed me it made me see the beauty of art and story telling that games are capable of it’s really just fantastic. for the love of god do not stop after ending A. Love this game so much.

Cardcaptor Sakura - I think this is my first CLAMP manga I finished. LOVED sakura and shaoran they are so small. so many good aspects to this series and then all of the age gap bullshit is there so IDK hard to recommend but I enjoyed reading all of the parts that weren't about horrible relationships

Horimiya - CUTE I love romance where you get to follow them as a couple <3 there were a few bad spots in it (miyamura's piercings being compared to self harm in that one chapter.......???????) but over all a good read

Astra: Lost in Space - fun scifi adventure with good characters. pretty short and easy read. its fun

You Got Me, Senpai - SO CUTE one of the best relationships I've read in a manga. adorable.

Drowning Love - verrry good and complex, a mature story with darker elements (check out trigger warnings for it) and a very engaging coming of age story about two kinda horrible kids with too much attention pointed their way living in a small town. anime adaptation WHEN

Wake Up, Sleeping Beauty - super cute romance, supernatural elements. loved it

Orange - think this would be a perfect read if the time travel element wasn't explained like That and also Suwa >>> Kakeru and what they did to his character in that bonus story was just mean

A Kiss, For Real - it was cute. the summary makes it sound more romance focused than it actually is, there is a lot of focus on the MCs journey of growth and what she wants to do with her life. Romance was cute but not exceptionally so

Takopi's Original Sin - overhyped as hell. depressing outlook on life. thought some of it was fine but it is overall too cruel to say i enjoyed it, especially with a cast this young

The Girl From The Other Side - I actually 100% cannot remember if I read this last year or not. anyways. BEAUTIFUL art, great characters, compelling mysteries

Junji Ito's Dissolving Classroom - not his best work by far, but it is one of his earliest so I don't care too much.

Dance Dance Danseur - did not like the MC but I did like the FMC and Rival character, good animation. I read the authors shoujo title Drowning Love this year and it should've gotten the adaptation TBH but this was fine, last few episodes carried

Death Parade - rewatched this one this year and it is still amazing. OP is still one of the best out there.

12: overlord (2015-)

listen. its a bad show. anyone who tells you is good is marvelpilled to see action=good. the world setup and characters had a lot of potential in season 1, but with each season it got progressively worse. the show spends a lot of time developing side characters, and then kills them off just to show how strong the protagonist is. said protagonist goes through little to no character development over 4 entire seasons. even the action and fights arent well done theyre just fights. everything’s a curbstomp and it sucks. idk man even fic cant fix this one.

11: tales of phantasia (2004)

pros: seeing the characters animated instead of in little pixeled sprites. cons: everything else. its a bad adaptation.

10: chainsaw man (2022-)

this one’s also not for me! i think its a really good show, between the pacing, interpersonal relationships, and animation (plus a different ending per ep is god tier). but it makes me feel bad to watch and not even in a cathartic way.

9: spy x family (2022-)

its a fun show! the animation’s great and its funny. but it doesnt stand out to me as much as its hyped. definitely recommend, but doesnt compare to my other faves.

8. black butler (2008)

the story? WACK. the characters? WACK. made me laugh though and it was really fun to watch as like, something id only heard about back in middle school. would not recommend but i had fun watching it. plus, its one of the few shows (ok first seasons) that actively keeps its word and doesnt try to pull a deus ex to save the protag at the end. we need more of this.

7. the case study of vanitas (2022-)

the way this show deals with unreliable narrators and complex interpersonal relationships and still manages to have incredible worldbuilding… the characters are all so well done and i NEED to have more of it animated.

6. demon slayer (entertainment district arc) (2022-)

i dont care what anyone says i love this show. best quality animation of the decade. super compelling cast of characters. i watched the rest of the show last year, but this one gets included bc its new and it made me rewatch the entire show twice. that fight at the end had me truly speechless

4. komi cant communicate (2021-)

i laughed until i cried several times while watching this and that alone puts any show near the top for me

see above. every ep had me in tears. best ending song of the year (hiii most played song). plus its gender.

2. mairimashita! iruma-kun (2019-)

life changing show. to me. like i dont even know what to say about it. character designs rule. op/ed AND musical songs are good. first anime to make me pick up its manga in a literal decade. theres nonbinary characters. its an isekai. every character makes me go :D when they come up on screen. 11/10

I’m Happy for Manga (and an Annoucement)

I will be the first to tell you that I’m not a huge fan of New York Comic-Con. This is mostly due to the lack of anime and manga content and how recent attempts at an anime side-event have bombed. However, after this year’s NYCC, I can’t help but say that it does feel like anime and manga truly can’t be ignored anymore.

I checked to see what was happening this past weekend as I didn’t go. No one outside of my anime/manga industry/journalist circle was talking about the BLEACH Thousand-Year Blood War and Chainsaw Man anime premieres at the convention. Hell, I didn’t see much talk in my friend circle about the One Piece Film Red takeover in Times Square (which looked freaking awesome, by the way). While all three are mainstream anime/manga properties, they got the grand state treatment and seeing anime/manga fans react to them was fun to see.

And maybe more importantly, seeing all the manga panels (via Twitter) held by people I admire and respect. There was so much to check out if I decided to go. “This Manga Is Awesome,” “Best and Worst Manga of 2022″, “Defending Manga,” “The Manga Industry and Your Library,” etc. Anime and manga booths were huge compared to what I heard about San Diego Comic-Con 2022, where Hollywood and other media overwhelmingly dwarf over Asian-produced works.

I can’t help but be happy because to borrow a quote from this Tweet, it does feel like anime and manga have finally won. I do feel that New York has a certain advantage versus San Diego as in many book publishers are based here in New York City. Penguin Random House (which houses Kodansha USA and Square Enix Books and also a distribution partner relationship with Dark Horse Comics), Simon and Schuster (a distribution partner for VIZ Media) and Hachette Press (which houses Yen Press) all have offices in NYC. I feel like New York is a heavy book-reading city, but it’s also one of the most diverse places in the world too (compared to San Diego).

There’s a saying that geeks have inherited the Earth over the past few years, but it never felt that way for anime/manga fans for a long time. Maybe now, we can start to say that the weebs shall inherit the Earth?

Speaking of conventions, I would like to say that for the 1st time ever, I’ll be going to Anime NYC as Press for this blog. I was so afraid of representing myself for a long time, but after nixing the Manga Therapy name and some encouragement from peers, this was the perfect time. I’m thinking about what I can do besides the usual press coverage. I have a grand idea in my head, but we’ll see.

Also, there’s a link to the Best & Worst Manga 2022 list for this year’s NYCC for anyone who wants to see what manga journalists/librarians/influencers/YouTubers picked. I have personally used these lists to determine what to read next and highly recommend them to any manga reader looking for new material to check out (or not).

A pessimistic person who has had the difficulties of life thrown at her every which way, Asa is the holder of a variety of negative emotions – all bottled into one being. He is shown to be insecure, and has a notably childish nature. (“Younger sibling” would be the best way to put it.) He doesn’t want to be forgotten, and he makes that much clear.

history / background:

Asa has an ongoing track record of losing those that she comes to care for. When Asa was younger, the Typhoon Devil attacked their home and took everything that Asa loved. In an effort to save a cat, Asa nearly was lost, herself – but if her mother had not sacrificed herself for Asa’s sake, she would not be here today. (She’s eternally guilty for this fact.) After entering an orphanage following her mother’s passing, the caretaker convinced her to give her cat away to another, more loving family. Understanding that her situation was not as ideal for a pet, she agreed. She would later learn that the caretaker had killed her cat in an effort to teach Asa a lesson: If everybody around her didn’t have a family, she didn’t get to have one, either. In the coming years, Asa would continue to live without family. She would go to school, but mostly keep to herself, trust issues making it deeply difficult for her to form true friendships with anybody. The only two people in her class to know her name were the class president and her teacher, and she figured that it was okay that way. She didn’t need anybody to know her.  This alienation from her classmates is only furthered when she accidentally kills their class pet, Bucky. However, in order to make Asa feel better, the class president and her teacher invite her to visit Bucky’s grave. She finds out that her teacher, Tanaka, and the class president had been having an affair, the class president having fallen deeply in love with Tanaka and was jealous of his preferential treatment to the otherwise unsociable Asa. She reveals that she had made a contract with the Justice Devil in order to set things right, and attacks Asa in an effort to kill her – slicing her head in half. The War Devil, having watched this scenario unfold, takes hold of Asa’s body in her stead and revives her as a Fiend – but leaves one half of her brain unoccupied, allowing Asa to stay alive and share partial control of the body. Disposing of Tanaka and the class president, the War Devil makes it clear to Asa what he is here to do: kill Chainsaw Man. It gives her the information that the Chainsaw Man is attending her school, and that she is to find him and dispose of him under the condition that Asa will receive her body back when the job is done.

powers / abilities:  

WEAPON CREATION. Thanks to the presence of the War Devil, both Asa and Yoru are able to create weapons out of things that are perceived as “belonging” to either of them. The strength of the weapon depends on the guilt Asa or Yoru feels regarding the creation of the weapon.  Whether or not something “belongs” to Asa or Yoru in the material sense, as long as the item is perceived in some way to be theirs, it may be turned into a weapon; such as faking a purchase of a building to turn said building into a weapon.  The weapons may be created out of objects or out of flesh, such as corpses or people who are romantically or emotionally involved with Asa or Yoru, and thus can be perceived as being “owned” by either of them.

inherent abilities:

thanks to the war devil’s presence, she has higher than average physical durability, speed, and strength.

it can be assumed that drinking blood will heal her due to her status as a fiend.

yoru is able to take over asa’s body and release control back to asa at will. yoru cannot take control of the body if asa is paralyzed by fear.

get ready to read me dumping all of my feelings for makima here (spoilers in the read more!)

while i was doing laundry just now, i'm reminded of how i felt when i first read chainsaw man, and how... empty i felt after finishing part 1. i can't remember when did i first read it, because it's been... a while but i do remember at the time, what really caught me off guard about makima is how... much i excused her behavior towards denji and everyone around her just because she's in a form of a woman.

god, that's the biggest mistake i made right there.

i actually felt betrayed by fujimoto when i finished reading chapter 74 for the first time. seeing makima laughed at denji's face for naively putting his faith on her. it felt like i was the one being mocked. i actually had to take a break after reading it because i felt so angry at makima.

but now, after... going through some traumatic shit myself that's pretty similar to what happened to denji... i kinda felt like a fool for believing makima's... facade in the first two chapters. and i think that also has something to do with the current climate of feminism and how... asian culture had this weird gender essentialism thing where people can't process the thought of women being evil without being outright obnoxious/rude about it. combined the two, and you got people reading fictional works and thought "ah there's no way this female character is evil, she's too nice"

hell, just like me, there are people out there who think of this when it comes to women in their lives too.

and to see this manga tackle such... sensitive issue in this very subtle way, i'm also grateful to fujimoto for not... ridiculing denji too much for believing makima. he's not at fault here, no matter how much stupid mistakes he made, i can never blame him for falling into makima's traps. because he is starving for affection, for acceptance, for kindness. just like a lot of people, he have difficulty understanding that not all kindness, acceptance and affection are unconditional.

but we always tried our best to think positively of other people. so no, it's not your fault if you ended up trusting the wrong person, things... happened. for a reason, i hope so.

and just like i mentioned before about asian's gender essentialism bs and the current social climate regarding gender equality etc, it is very rare to see women, especially evil women represented in a way that isn't a) obnoxiously loud, b) boldly sexual and c) stupidly weak when confronted with men

so, really, i'm glad i picked up the manga again after i throw it away from my first reading. because now i get to appreciate just how... complex makima as a character is. in my current mindset, i'm able to enjoy how cool yet terrifying she is. but also how... surprisingly vulnerable her inner mind is, after knowing that what she really desires is nothing more than just an equal-footing relationship with another person. it makes me realized that... really even abusers are still human beings.

i'm not trying to forgive abusers here, they're actively doing things for their own selfish reasons, but. i think there is merit in understanding how... bad people can become bad. "nature vs nurture" and all that.

tldr'; i just think makima is pretty fucking neat and people who be like "oh she's truly evil" can benefit from looking at her character in a more nuanced way. especially if you're someone aspiring to write complex character with subtle mannerisms.

Cuts, bruises, trips, falls - you name it, it had had probably happened.

But nothing - and I mean nothing - could compare to what you what you went through once a month. Whenever your period came about, it was just days and days and days of feeling like you had a knife through your abdomen. Not to mention everything that came with it; bloating, head-aches, mood swings, violent shivers. All of that paired with the Colombian heat made for a rough week.

Javier tried his best to understand. He really did.

The first time he'd tried to sympathise with your period-related problems, the poor, misunderstood man had said something to the effect of 'one time I got hit in the nuts and it really hurt.' He came to regret that one pretty quickly. One very heated conversation later

After that, he was torn between staying in his lane, or at least trying to help you - even if it was in his own weird, Javi way. Because contrary to stony demeanour at work, you were his whole heart and he wanted nothing more than to make you feel better. He would drop anything at a minute's notice to be by your side. It didn't matter what it was. You were his main priority and you always came first. He would have crossed the fucking seas if it meant making you happy.

Luckily, your apartment was only across the road, not an ocean. Javi didn't usually drop by during the day on account for the fact he saw you every day at work, but you hadn't turned up today. It was unlike you to miss a day, even for an important event. You worked your ass off 24/7 and you were almost as dedicated to your cause as Javier. Almost.

5. Stolas Goetia: As a father single-handedly carrying the weight of one of the only engaging mlm relationships in animation, Stolas is a lot of fun to watch. My one hope for GotG vol. 3? Rocket gets an actual happy ending for once. He deserves it.

So CAOS Part 4 was a mess

SPOILERS FOR EVERYTHING

I used this exact same title for Part 3 but it seemed very fitting for Part 4 as well. I just want to preface this by saying I didn’t expect anything before watching (well, I expected it to be bad, which gave the show a chance to surprise me), I just hoped that my friends shipping Zelda and Marie would get some sweet sapphic content and well... The Eldritch Terrors were a good concept with mostly fine execution (although the Terrors could have been a little more diverse... Would it kill the writers to give one more of them a female voice? And on that nore, why not hire Janet from the Good Place to voice the Void? They missed out on that so bad!). Other things I liked, in no particular order:

Vinegar Tom coming back to life and Zelda being truly happy for once

giving Agatha her sanity back

Prudence and chainsaw, ‘nough said

Lilith finally murdering her abuser the way she and we as the viewers deserved

the OG aunties and their whole episode

Ambrose, the light of my life, and all the adult cast (except for Lucifer, what the hell was that)

Unfortunately these are mostly minor positives and I don’t have the capacity to cover everything bad with Part 4, so I’ll just stick to what I started at the beginning of the post – Mambo Marie and the wlw representation in the show. Prepare for long-ish post.

It was weird from the start. We got a cute scene in the first episode (with horrible lighting I must say, I immediately felt sorry for y’all who make gifs) but then Zelda and Marie barely interacted. Yes, they were often standing next to each other, but I don’t think they had a single meaningful interaction since. I don’t think they even touched, let alone acted romantically towards each other. Marie was also extremely shady the whole time, she was constantly acting on her own (only after the fact was it acknowledged that the rest of the coven knew, but to me it just looked weird), that I really thought I was right with my joke prediction of her being the surprise villain. Turns out she’s a surprise man and the villain is Roberto, the showrunner! 

From the start of the show it must have been obvious to Roberto and the rest of the creative team that a large number of fans wanted to see some lesbians (specifically Zelda and Lilith getting together). Obviously the creators do not have do anything the fans want, but giving us a canonical sapphic relationship and then being like “syke! fooled you, there were no lesbians actually. no homo uwu” just seems extremely ignorant at best and malevolent at worst. Plus the fact that in the alternate “perversed” universe, Zelda was called Madam Spellman. Who does that??? WTF. 

I must also mention that the reveal, that comes out of nowhere and leads to nothing, means that Zelda’s two consecutive partners didn’t care about informed consent. Big yikes. Of course none of this was acknowledged in universe, so thanks for that, Roberto, thank you very much.

And now to minor grievances:

Theo and his boyfriend, whose name I don’t remember, go through unnecessary conflict that just takes up time and space

it almost looked like the Blackwood twins will become real people with their own thoughts and actions, but no

the afterlife doesn’t make sense, also the glorification of suicide

people constantly bring up the color of Sabrina’s headband like if anyone cared about that to notice (I expected some twist with Sabrinas changing places and the reveal being the headband, but no)

you turned an octopus into a... diving equipment???

Sabrina and her huge crisis that she doesn’t have a boyfriend for 5 minutes (so she has to make out with more than one Eldritch Terrors)

Roberto not being capable of letting babies exist after their extremely traumatic prolonged birth scenes (yes, I’m coming back to Part 1, too, what about it)

Aaaand I think I’m ready to breathe again. I’m happy the show’s over, not because I’m an evil hater (I am definitely evil though) but because it had (and still has) so much potential, but it is obvious the writers can’t write for shit. The cast is amazing and I love almost every single one of them, their kind interactions with fans were really a joy to watch (that cannot be said for some fans but what can you do). I hope I will have the opportunity to meet some of them when the ‘rona is finally over. I also met a lot of lovely people through CAOS and I am eternally grateful.
