Beware, the long post incoming. Pro tips for artists who work on commissions!
DISCLAIMER: I do not have, like, a HUGE online following and can’t be called a popular or viral artist, but I do have some experience and I’ve been working as a freelance artist for more that five years, so I could share a few tips on how to work with clients with my fellow artists. Scroll down for the short summary!
First of all, you always need to have your Terms of Service written down in a document that is accessible for your potential clients. And by terms of service I don’t mean a set of rules like “I don’t draw mecha, anthro and N/S/F/W”. There is much more into it, than you may think when you first start drawing commissions.
You’ll need to understand how copyright law/author’s rights in your country works (for example, US copyright or Russian author’s rights, be sure to check your local resources). There are a bunch of sites where you can actually read some legal documents (. I know it might be boring, but TRUST me, you WILL need this knowledge if you choose this career path.
Russia, for example, is plagued with shops selling anime merchandise. The merchandise is usually printed somewhere in the basement of the shop and the shop owners literally rip off other people’s intellectual property. If the artist ask them to remove their IP from the shop the owners usually try to fool them with lies about how the IP works. They will tell you, that you have to register copyright on every single drawing and if you don’t do it anyone can reproduce and sell your artwork. In reality, copyright law in most countries simply doesn’t work this way. Once you create an original work and fix it, take a photograph, write a song or blog entry, paint an artwork, you already are the author and the owner. Yes, there are certain procedures of copyright registration, which is only a step to enhance the protection, but you become an author the very moment you create a piece of art, and no one have a right to take your creation from you. Knowing your rights is essential.
Some of your commissioners may try to scam you too, but most of them might simply not be aware of how copyright law works. I literally had people asking me questions whether or not the character I am commissioned to draw becomes MY intellectual property. I literally had to convince the person (who was legit scared, since the commissioned piece was going to be a first image of his character ever created) otherwise. If you have an idea of the character written down or fixed in any other form such as a collage, a sketch, or a concept art -- the character is yours. Artist may have rights to the image they create, but not the character itself. Your potential commissioner must acknowledge that their characters, settings and etc. is still theirs, while your artwork is yours, if your contract doesn’t state otherwise. You can sell the property rights on your artwork to your commissioner if you want, but it is unnecessary for non-commercial commissions. And I strongly advice you to distinguish the non-commercial commissions from commercial ones and set the different pricing for them. Even if you sell ownership of your artwork to your commissioner, you can not sell the authorship. You will always remain an author of your artwork, thus you still have all the author’s rights stated in the legal documents.
Another thing that is absolutely necessary to be stated in your terms of service is information whether (and when) it is possible to get a refund from you. You absolutely have to write it down: no. refunds. for finished. artworks.
You have already invested time and effort to finish an artwork. The job is done and the money is yours. I’ve heard stories of commissioners demanding refund a few months later after the commission was finished and approved by the commissioners, because, quote “I do not want it anymore”. Commissioning an artist doesn’t work this way, artwork is not an item purchased on shein or aliexpress that can be sent back to the seller. It is not a mass production. It is a unique piece of art. Example: My friend once drew a non-commercial commission for a client who tried to use it commercially later on. She contacted him and reminded of the Terms of Service he agreed with, offering him to pay a fee for commercializing the piece instead of taking him to the court or starting a drama. He declined and suddenly demanded a full refund for that commission via Paypal services. My friend contacted the supports and showed them the entire correspondence with that client. She also stated that the invoice he paid included a link to the Terms and Service he had to agree with if he pays that invoid. The money were returned to her.
However, partial refund can be possible at the certain stage of work. For example, the sketch is done, but something goes horribly wrong. Either the client appeared to be a toxic person, or an artist does not have a required skill to finish the job. I suggest you keep the money for the sketch, but refund the rest of the sum. It might be 50/50 like I suggested to my clients before (when I still could work with Paypal), but it really depends on your choise. I suggest not doing a full refund though for many reasons: not only you make yourself vulnerable, but you also might normalize a practice harmful to other artists this way.
The main reason why full refund when the sketch/line-art are done must not be an option is that some clients may commission other artists with lower prices to finish the job. This brings us to the next important point: you absolutely need to forbid your clients from altering, coloring or overpainting your creation or commission other artists to do so. This also protects your artwork from being cropped, changed with Instagram filters or even being edited into a N/S/F/W image. Speaking of which. If you create adult content, you absolutely need to state that to request such a commission, your commissioner must at least be 18/21 years old (depending on your country). And as for the SFW commissions you also have to state that if someone underage commissions an artwork from you it is automatically supposed that they have a parental concern.
There is also a popular way to scam artist via some payment systems, called I-did-not-receive-a-package. Most of the payment systems automatically suppose that you sell goods which have to be physically delivered via postal services. This is why it is important to state (both in the Terms of Service and the payment invoice itself) that what commissioner is about to receive is a digital good.
And the last, but not the least: don’t forget about alterations and changes the commissioner might want to make on the way. Some people do not understand how difficult it may be to make a major change in the artwork when it is almost finished. Always let your commissioners know that all the major changes are only acceptable at early stages: sketch, line-art, basic coloring. Later on, it is only possible to make the minor ones. I prefer to give my commissioner’s this info in private emails along with the WIPs I send, but you can totally state it in your Terms of Service. I do not limit the changes to five or three per commission, but I really do appreciate it when I get all the necessary feedback in time.
To sum this post up, the info essential for your Terms of Service doc is:
- The information on whether or not your commissions are commercial or non-commercial. If they are non-commercial, is there a way to commercialize them? At what cost?
- The information on author’s and commissioner’s rights;
- The information on whether (and when) refunds are possible;
- The prohibition of coloring, cropping, overpainting and other alterations;
- The information on whether or not you provide the commissioner with some physical goods or with digital goods only;
- Don’t forget about your commissioner’s age! If you work with client who is a minor, a parental consern is required. And no n/s/f/w for underage people!
- You may also want to include that you can refuse to work on the commission without explanation in case you encounter a toxic client or feel like it might be some sort of scam.
- I also strongly suggest you work with prepay, either full or 50% of total sum, it usually scares off the scammers. I take my prepay after me and my client agree on a rough doodle of an overall composition.
- I also include the black list of the themes: everyting offensive imaginable (sexism, homophobia, transfobia, racism, for N/S/F/W artists it also might be some certain fetishes and etc). Keep your reputation clean!
- Ban N/F/T and blacklist the commissioners who turn your artworks into them anywayss, don’t be shy <3
These are the things that are absolutely necessary but are so rarely seen in artists’ Terms of Service that it makes me sad. Some of these tips really helped me to avoid scams and misunderstandings. I really hope it helps you all!

For those who don't want to download CC from CurseForge and want to avoid it by this social network (Tumblr), I recommend you something very useful. In Settings, Content you see, Filtered Post Content, here:
Tumblr media
Type and add the word "CurseForge" and "'forgecdn" (without the quotation marks). ["forgecdn" is for those who put direct download link without going through CurseForge page so CC is downloaded directly and you don't know where it came from]
Tumblr media
Once you do that, all posts containing that words or any links or direct downloads to them will be filtered and you will be able to detect them more easily, e.g:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It also works if you type "early access" for all those who want to control Custom Content that isn't yet public when it's written that way.
As a secondary tip, if it's a lookbook and you want to download CC of links but you don't want to download the one linked to CurseForge, copy link of linked word/quote with right click (from PC/Mac) or pressing on it for a while (from mobile) and paste it in a notepad so before entering you know where it will take you. (This can also be applied with any link in any other social network, without needing to be on Tumblr as long as it's linked to a word/quote, e.g. Patreon).
Lately I've seen a couple of mutuals; who don't want to download from CurseForge; share CC posts with a single download link there and I think they may find it useful if haven't already done this.

Hello hello! You seem super educated about fighting shitty bills, so how/where can I send things to combat KOSA?
I wouldn't say I'm super educated on this topic. I just passed along a more-useful-than-average chunk of info I happened across because some of my politically active friends shared it elseweb.
That said, a bit of searching goes a long way if you know what to look for.
For KOSA in general, there's actually a designated website for why and how to fight it:
And groups like the EFF are also on the job:
In general, if you have an address in the USA, you can find who represents you and how to contact them in several places.
There are several US government official sites:
https://www.usa.gov/elected-officials
https://www.congress.gov/members/find-your-member
http://www.house.gov/representatives/find-your-representative
https://www.senate.gov/senators/senators-contact.htm
Each state government also has similar sites for the next layer of government down, and counties often do as well. (Local laws have a big impact, too, and set precedents for larger movements!)
There are various non-profit orgs as well, such as Common Cause, who help streamline the process:
Hopefully others can share more resources in comments or reblogs!

Getting to Monday Morning: How Not to Go to the Emergency Department if You Don't Super Freaking Have To
Listen, I've re-written this intro a dozen times. I've talked about staffing in US hospitals (bad), I've touched on how the system backs up when staffing is bad (no staff on floors means ED stays full means new patients wait for hours or days to get a bed), I've even considered sharing my own experiences as a bedside nurse.
But the bottom line of all of it is that if your life or at least one limb doesn't absolutely depend on it, stay the heck out of the emergency department. And this post is here to help give you some tips for staying home until you can be seen by your primary care doctor or an urgent care.
Everything in this post (except an albuterol inhaler) is something you can find at a pharmacy without a prescription in the USA.
Officially, the following information is for educational use only.
What Conditions Are Life or Limb?
Lack of breathing or pulse
Blue or grey skin due to respiratory problems after taking prescribed rescue medications
An obvious hole in the chest wall
A sudden change in mental status that doesn't resolve within a few mins, especially if you don't know why
A head injury with worsening confusion or profuse vomiting
Abdominal pain that gets better when you press on the abdomen, or gets worse when you release pressure suddenly
Severe abdominal pain and not passing any gas
A musculoskeletal injury (fracture, sprain, etc...) with numbness, tingling, severe weakness, or very pale skin below the site of injury
Spurting bleeding that you can't stop, or numbness, severe weakness, or very pale skin below the site of injury once the bleeding is stopped, or if the bleeding required a tourniquet to stop
Red streaks spreading from a wound
Seizure that has lasted longer than 5 minutes without stopping, or which stops and starts without the person coming back to baseline in between
Chest pain without a known cause or with symptoms like nausea, weakness, sweating, or confusion
Any of the above, you want to call 911 or go to the hospital and explain exactly why you are there to the first person with a hospital badge you come across.
BUT
If it's pain or nausea or not-absolute-emergency respiratory problems from a known source or wounds or fever or skin infections, maybe consider some alternatives first.
PAIN:
OTC Meds: if you can take both acetaminophen (paracetamol/Tylenol) and an NSAID like ibuprofen, consider staggering them. For example, take 650mg acetaminophen at 0000, then 400mg ibuprofen at 0200, then acetaminophen at 0400, then ibuprofen at 0600, etc... This helps make sure one or the other medication is at it's peak effectiveness at all times (one study found pain control similar to 5mg oxycodone from a similar regimen). If it's night time consider OTC doxalamine (unisom) or diphenhydramine (benadryl) if you know they make you sleepy.
Acetaminophen works significantly better as a suppository. Sorry to tell you.
If it's muscle pain (back, neck, shoulder, menstrual cramps, broken bone more than a few days old) or arthritis pain, heat helps relax muscles and decrease stiffness. Try to get it as hot as you can without burning and wrap in something light like a pillow case. A hot water bottle or wheat pillow is great for this.
If it's an acute injury like a sprain or break that happened today, cold works better at decreasing pain, if not for helping the injury to heal. But pain is what we're dealing with here. You want several ice packs wrapped in a pillowcase or hand towel and wrapped all around the injury.
If the pain is an injury that is in a spot where you can elevate it (like a limb), elevate above the heart- this will significantly decrease throbbing.
Splinting an injury or recent surgery site decreases movement in that area, which decreases pain. If the injury is on a limb you can wrap a pillow around it and tape it in place. If it's abdominal (like a surgical incision) or in the chest area (like a cracked rib) you can hold a folded blanket against the site when you cough or move.
Abdominal pain can sometimes be partially relieved by bending the legs or laying on one side or the other.
For young children, sugar is an excellent distraction and is used in medical environments to relieve pain from short procedures.
NAUSEA/VOMITING/DIARRHEA/CONSTIPATION:
Nausea/Vomiting:
Any antihistamine that produces drowsiness will work on nausea. These include diphenhydramine, doxalamine, and dimehydrinate.
If unable to take by mouth, any of the above can be crushed, mixed with a small amount of softened coca butter or coconut oil, and frozen in the tip of a finger of a glove to make a suppository.
Once you stop vomiting, you can also take bismuth subsalicylate on top of an antihistamine.
Smelling mint or unscented isopropyl alcohol
Starting with an hour of trying to drink nothing at all, then 1oz of a clear liquid (water, electrolyte drink, peppermint tea, etc..) every half hour for an hour, then 1oz every 15 mins for an hour and slowly build up from there.
Sipping regular coca cola (I hate to mention a brand name, but coca cola has phosphoric acid in it (most off brands don't or have less), which is the same active ingredient as a lot of anti-nausea medications, and is a lot cheaper (and tastier) for the amount. It only works for about 20 minutes by slowing down your stomach's squishing your food around, but that's long enough to be able to drink other clear liquids in between).
Sipping soda water reduces stomach acidity and helps you burp, which often helps you feel better.
Cool wash cloths on the forehead or neck.
If someone has severe nausea that is causing worsening dehydration but no diarrhea, a slow tap water enema can be absorbed by the colon (up to 2 liters per day), which can often relieve some of the dehydration and help get someone to business hours.
Diarrhea:
Loperamide- for diarrhea not caused by antibiotics, loperamide is your friend. Read and follow the instructions. You need to take twice as much on the first poop as the rest of them. You do not need to "clear out" an infection. The infection itself is in the wall of the intestine, all you're doing by pooping a lot is spreading it around.
You can take bismuth subsalicylate with loperamide
One of the most dangerous parts of diarrhea is dehydration. A good electrolyte drink can be made by mixing 1/4 tsp table salt and 1/8 tsp potassium chloride salt replacer with a favorite drink mix and 8oz of water. Drink water too, but alternate with electrolyte drinks.
BRAT (banana, rice, applesauce, and toast), if eaten exclusively, will help reduce frequency.
Constipation:
A whole head of iceberg lettuce or a couple grapefruit or like half a thing of prunes all work. But you have to drink a lot of water with them or they'll just make it worse.
Docusate sodium. If that doesn't work add senna. If that doesn't work add milk of mag. If that doesn't work add mag citrate. If that doesn't work try a soap sud enema. I would wait 12 hours in between each, but to each their own.
Basically any stimulation of the rectum can help things move along.
FEVER:
First, don't try to get rid of a fever unless it is over 103F or the person is really, really uncomfortable.
OTC meds like acetaminophen, ibuprofen, aspirin, and naproxen all reduce fevers. If you need to you can stagger them (see instructions under "PAIN")
Cool wash cloths on the forehead or neck make things a little more comfortable
Loose-fitting, light clothing
Don't try to force a fever down with cold water or ice packs. If it is 105F or above and acetaminophen or an NSAID hasn't worked, that's something to go to a hospital about.
Prevent most of the problems with fevers by keeping the person very well hydrated (see Diarrhea above for instructions on hydration)
Calories are super important because the body is using a ton of them to keep the temp up. If the person isn't eating, 8oz whole chocolate milk with about a third of a flintstones vitamin (on the side) has essentially the same nutritional profile as an Ensure. And it tastes better. And it's way cheaper.
A brief seizure in a kid with a fever that happens once is fairly common and something to call a doctor about, a long seizure (more than 5 mins) is something to go to the hospital about.
RESPIRATORY PROBLEMS
If you have an albuterol inhaler but no spacer, you can make a kinda crappy one from a plastic bottle. Make a hole in the side just slightly larger than your inhaler mouthpiece. Stick the mouthpiece in, put your mouth on the mouth of the bottle, puff the inhaler, and breathe the medication in through the mouth.
Coffee and chocolate have caffeine and theobromine in them, both of which are bronchodilators
Breathing steam from a shower or a pot of boiling water can help loosen mucous in the lungs
Good hydration can help loosen mucous
Having the person lay at about a 45 degree angle gives the best range for the lungs to open fully
Sitting in "tripod position," a sitting position with the torso leaning forward and both arms pushing on knees
"Pursed lip breathing" you will probably have to look up a video on this, but it essentially creates some additional positive pressure in the airways that helps hold them open.
CUTS/OPEN WOUNDS/SKIN INFECTIONS:
Cuts/Open Wounds:
Stop the bleeding with pressure. This is literally just pushing on the cut, which pinches shut tiny blood vessels and allows them to clot off. If someone needs a tourniquet they need to go to the ED.
Clean the cut really well with plain water (if you would be comfortable drinking it, it's safe to wash wounds with). You want to get all visible particles of dirt or foreign material out
If water from the tap isn't enough pressure to do this, take a disposable water bottle and punch a small hole in the lid. Squeeze the bottle to put a pressurized stream of water into the cut to clean it.
If the wound isn't more than a half inch deep, you can close it yourself without stitches. Thin strips of very sticky cloth tape, dots of super glue, or even tying the wound together with the person's hair (if on the scalp) is great. If you have commercial closures those are great too. You just want to leave some open space to let the wound drain.
If the wound is deeper than that, pack it by taking clean gauze (kerlix is perfect for this) or in a pinch clean strips of long-fiber cloth, wetting them with water, and packing them in the wound. Put something on top of this to hold everything in place. Every 12-24 hours pull it all out and put clean stuff in. Note: any wound caused by an animal needs to be packed and seen by someone at the health department, usually within 48 hours for rabies prevention.
If it's really pulling at things in the wound, use some water to wet the fabric and loosen it up a bit. But you want some stuff to come out with the
Really shallow scrapes you can clean in a similar way but then just cover in petroleum jelly.
There is virtually no use for isopropyl alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, or triple antibiotic ointment. The former two may do more harm to healthy cells than to bacterial cells, the latter the antibiotics only last a few minutes and a lot of people are allergic to them. Just use water to clean and petroleum jelly if you have to cover something.
Skin or Wound Infections:
If you have a scrape or cut and a red, hot, painful area begins to creep outward around it, know you need to do something.
Start by drawing a line around the outside edge of the red area. This will help you track if it is getting bigger or smaller.
If it's bigger a few hours later, you need to do something quickly
Get a pot of water and 3 wash cloths
Boil the wash cloths in the water
Let the water cool to the point where it's really hot but won't burn the patient
Pull one of them out, wring the water out of it (it should be pretty uncomfortable to do this), and press it against the infected area. It will hurt.
When that wash cloth cools even a little, pull the next one out and do the same thing. Over time it will get less and less uncomfortable as the skin heats up to the temp of the wash cloths.
Rotate your wash cloths like this for 20-30 mins. If there is an abscess, it may burst during this process. That is a good thing. If there is a big opening, pack it (as described above), otherwise put a clean dressing over it and just let it drain.
Repeat this several times per day
If the site is getting bigger despite this, especially if this is happening quickly or there are streaks coming from the wound, go to the ED.

ADDITIONAL INFOS ABOUT THE LAHJAKÄÄRULEET + GOOGLE FORM
the gift you make doesn't have to be christmas themed ( i realised some people are genuinely unsure about that ; didn't cross my mind at all when making the post) really any theme is fine, just see what your recipient wants y'know
it doesn't have to be shippy if that's not your thing, you can always mention duos and characters you'd like to see interract platonically, since i know rpf isn't everyone's cup of tea<3
ABOUT THE FORM :
i slightly changed the first question
Tumblr media
because this whole thing is organized on tumblr (and even if running after people on other socials can be doable for me) i don't think everyone's secret santa has instagram or tiktok or whatever, and you can only send anon asks on tumblr so please, prioritize putting your TUMBLR url or @ in the answer
Why do i keep mentioning anon asks? because i know it can be fun to drop some nice christmas puns in people's inbox, or to tease the advancement of your gift to the person... and more importantly, to ask them details about their preferences! like "hey you mentionned XYZ in your prompt section, can you tell me more about that? - signed your secret santa" or whatever. i saw that a lot in the other secret santas i participated in, and it's pretty useful. and please try to give precises answers, it's always easier to work with than a "whatever's fine" <3
I probably should have added a question asking what can you put on the table? willit be writing? drawing? whatever else? unsure? just know that you can change your answer to the form, i allowed that option on purpose, in case you change your mind about anything or want to add complementary informations!
when it comes to the gift you're making, the prompts mentioned by your assigned person is just a suggestion, obviously don't make something about a topic you hate, and don't force yourself on anything ! if you have preferences on gift-making, you can mention it on the form, under the "organisation" question!
i will do my best to not pair people who are clearly incompatible together, but remember it is chosen at random, so you can't exactly chose who to pick, that's the point of the game! (but you can put in the form who /not/ to pick, can be more than 1 person)
i hope i managed to clear things up kfjhkdfh if anything else comes to my mind, i will reblog and add it to this post.
Reminder : you can register by filling this google form until the 30 november

For all of you converting your favorite Reshade presets over to Gshade, don’t forget to sort your shaders in the appropriate order. It’ll make sure your DOF is smooth (no patches or missed areas) and prevent jagged edges and other unsightly things from forming around sims and objects. The shaders most affected by the sort order are:
MXAO
DOF
SMAA/FXAA
You can read more about the sort order of other effects in one of pictureamoebae’s answered asks here 😊

Quick digital artist psa: export finished projects as both a jpeg and a png, and keep in mind which of your exports is which.
Failure to differentiate between the good quality file and the compressed one will result in you going "ah, the freaking crunchy Elizabeth jpeg" after zooming in. At least, it will if you're me.

This isn’t doll specific, but I thought I’d warn others in case you didn’t know like me, but if you start taking PayPal G&S payments for things then it will mark you as a business account and then you will no longer be able to receive F&F payments. You can only send them. It a new policy which I just found out because I use my PayPal for business purposes and am now unable to receive payments from my family to be paid back for things and I know a lot of people in this hobby use PayPal G&S for doll stuff due to the security and tax purposes, but it will try and force you to be a business and it will take away your ability to receive F&F payments. I just found this out the hard way when I had to refund someone for paying me back for something because it wouldn’t let them send F&F to me. I just want others to know if they didn’t already especially in a hobby where a lot of people who aren’t businesses may be forced to be seen as a business because of the new tax policies.

OK, possible TMI, but also maybe useful info
I spent much of my young life in a 6th floor apartment a 6 story walk-up POS building with all the usual perks; roaches of every size, mice, rats, bedbugs - yup we had it all.
When we finally were able to leave the big city and move in with my mom's dad the change in lifestyle was immediate, shocking and wonderful....when it didn't suck in brand new ways. So it goes.
Now, almost half a century later, I am living in Florida, home of big-ass flying roaches, every type of ant imaginable (and the occasional rodent issue during the pandemic, when suddenly all the restaurants were closed and all the yummy dumpster goodies went away).
So, being at a lower income level, but with early life experience to fall back on, I want to share a trick that has almost driven my roaches out, with minimal and very selective use of pesticides.
They need access to water. A sink full of dirty dishes is a feast with a side of water. As a bone-bred procrastinator I always postponed doing dishes as long as possible.
No more! As soon as I finish a meal all the dishes are done, dried and put away. Then the piece de resistance - I lightly dust the sinks, while still damp, with basic scouring powder - Comet, the generic stuff - no matter. Even in the drain. The roaches won't willingly walk through it, and those desperate enough to try...die.
OK, I admit it isn't pleasant finding the dead Roachasaurus Rex in the sink in the morning, but it beats watching it scurry to safety when the light comes on! While I still have new ones coming in periodically, my home is no longer user friendly to the 6 legged invaders.
PS - I do this in the bathroom basin and around the tub drain as well.
Side benefit #1 - it also discourages ants
Side benefit #2 - my sink, basin and tub are cleaner with little extra effort.
Bonus info - if you use it, Dawn Powershot kills roaches fast!
Hope this is helpful to folks who unwillingly share their homes with these critters!
