I feel like not enough people know that Wei ying's favorite animal (donkey/mule) are such good herding and family protecting animals because they fucking go after dogs.

They see a canine?, they gonna stomp that shit. Foxes, dogs, heck even wolves. Donkeys don't care how scarey they're supposed to be- they just know the dogs will either get off their property or they'll kill them dead. It's instinct to them.

They'll protect the whole flock/ pasture/ whatever their territory is from them - making them really ideal for a guy who's seriously afraid of dogs.

Anyway, I thought all the fanfic writers would maybe enjoy that tidbit. Goodbye 👋

( and psssst, before anyone comes at me with 'ummmm, actually'- yes, not every single donkey in existence will display this behavior. And yes, some donkeys get along fine with family dogs/ herding dogs, but that's normally because the dog and donkey grew up together, so they chill.)

there's something in wangxian fanfics that i hate and that is when any character tries to "cure" wwx's cynophobia

although i don't have a phobia, i /am/ afraid of dogs, especially the big ones, the lil babies not so much bc they're cute and i can always jump somewhere high enough they won't get me bc they're, you know, tiny

and something that i deeply hate is when someone says "you don't have to be afraid, they don't bite" like it's so simple, because, let me tell ya, IT'S NOT!!! it's not something i can decide on a whim that it's ok to pat a big ass dog's head because it's owner told me they don't bite, because it's not a switch i can turn on or off. YES i know they won't bite because they're basically smiling at me but those huge teeth, the huge mouth, just being beside it my heart beats so hard, so loud, and there's fear running through my whole body and the need to just run away or idk jump to the roof like a cat and be stuck

it's like when you're afraid of heights (I ALSO HAVE THAT BTW) and someone says "just don't look down" and haha fuck you???

anyway, what i hate in fanfics is when wwx is deeply afraid of a dog and the character begins "hey it's ok, they won't bite, look they're sitting still" like he can just stop feeling fear after that, magically, suddenly. and then they make him touch said dog, like peer pressure or something, and oh suddenly from nowhere at all wwx starts liking dogs and i hate that

it makes me fell bad i'm still afraid of dogs?? it's not easy to navigate life with this while almost everyone around you are dog lovers/parents/tutors 🥹 and most strangers can and will make you feel bad about it, like it's just a whine, a passing thing, you're just too picky

"why are you afraid, they're so docile!!" well, i almost lost my lower lip to a dog i hugged when i was 6, and then almost lost my knee to a huge one less then 10yrs later, but i'm sure you think it's nothing

pls do remember wwx almost died because of street dogs and that's the root of his fear, he probably have scars through his body from that time

I just hate it when people try to 'fix' WWX's fear of dogs.

The dude has a legitimate reason to be frightened of them after what he's been through and as long as it doesn't affect his life and make him miserable - which it really doesn't, he's scared and runs off and now he's got a hit husband to save him and make him feel safe - why make it an issue?

Not everyone likes dogs, not everyone has to compromise and face a fear because someone else has a dog.

Why is it always WWX who has to 'get over' his fear in these fanfics? Why aren't others more understanding of his fears and keeping the dog away or leaving it at home - which you'll notice canon JL actually starts to do, especially in the extra when they are on a night-hunt.

I just think it's really inconsiderate of people to down play WWX's fear and make him "get over it" so he can play happy families as some double uncle team with JC - which is less likely to happen than WWX getting over his fear of dogs! Then again, considering the plot dynamic of these "fix it" fics, full of ooc shit they wouldn't do... I guess I shouldn't be surprised.

Friendly reminder that canonically Jiang Cheng DID vouch for the Wen siblings at first, but was ultimately shut down after doing so

Most of the CW were against the Wens. Vouching for them was political suicide and yet he still attempted to defend them. He received backlash for it.

Lan Xichen, a more respected leader than JC at the time, was also shouted down too. Clearly, there was no room for arguments where the Wens were involved.. You were either with them or against them. The sect leaders had to take that into consideration during the deliberation. Nobody wants a target on their backs, especially when they are responsible for an entire sect.

Not saying the Massacre was right, neither the discrimination but be fr here.

Plus, Jiang Cheng and Nie Mingjue had trauma from all the shit the Wen clan did. They're hardly going to be so forgiving or trusting for that matter.

Furthermore, Jiang Cheng wasn't conscious when the Wen siblings saved him. He never fostered the same bond WWX would have. Remember, this is a genocide survivor we're talking about here. Forgiving and thanking members from a sect responsible for his family's demise isn't going to be easy. And yet there he was at the sect meeting, making an attempt to stand up for the Wen siblings in front of all these powerful leaders. So much so that it baffled Nie Mingjue.

Jiang Cheng (although afraid and begrudging to let WWX go in fear of might happen to him), initially allowed WWX to be with the Wens. He grew to accept that that was his path. He was happy to let him live in peace with them so long as WWX was safe and happy. But it didn't work out for them like they had hoped. And it all came to an end when his sister died, his brother in law too, and that all resulted in the Siege.

But I ask, can we really blame him for it? If he was anything like he was after his parents' deaths, the destruction of LP, and the core loss, he most definitely wouldn't have been of sound mind (he most likely wasn't for some time after either, if you remember the scene where both JGY and XY laugh, calling him a mad dog. Which makes me question the other sect leaders, if anything. It seems they were the ones more willing to jump in at any chance to finish off the Wens if they were willing to follow a "mad dog" into battle? But eh, that's speculation. We're not given the full story regarding the siege. So ig it's unfair to pin sole responsibility on one person..). He may have led the Siege, but he ultimately wasn't the one who orchestrated it with some huge, wicked end game in mind.

The persons responsible for it are all spelt out for you in the book. And yet I find it interesting that it's Jiang Cheng who is blamed and hated for everything when the real villain is right there *looks at the Jins*

The Untamed. This is a Golden Core Reveal, not so much fix-it as fix the world around it so that everything doesn't go off the rails. It features Cunning Deception, Not So Cunning Deception, Wei Wuxian being gremlin, surprisingly cool LQR, and more Wangxian than Jiang Cheng is comfortable with. Also JGY has a migrane.

Like a House on Fire by KouriArashi. (oooh, I figured out how to do a thing) The Untamed. A modern-world AU non-cultivators rough 9-1-1 fusion fic. Everyone's a firefighter or a paramedic or a cop, Jiang Cheng gets a dog (and she is a Very Good Girl), Jin Zixuan discovers a new and shiny spine, Nie Mingjue just wants his people to be okay, and JGY gets an axe. It's mildly unhinged, it's excellent writing, I love it.

Imprints by Lisa_Telramor. The Untamed. A post-canon fic in which Wei Wuxian rescues a small innocent baby... whoops that's a dog. Except even if it is a dog, it is still small. And innocent. And helpless. And definitely will die if not helped. Featuring Wei Wuxian and his dog (!!!), poor mental health repair techniques, Yunmeng Bros reconciliation, and Jin Ling despairing over his uncles. This fic is so cute, I cannot even.

By Any Other Name by ShanaStoryteller. The Untamed. Wei Wuxian returns, but it's Not Right, and in a panic he retreats to Lotus Pier. Also known as that 'Wei Wuxian fucks with gender and then everything else' fic. Featuring Lan Zhan having deeply confused thoughts about his sexuality and loyalty to a dead man, Jin Ling gleefully calling Wei Wuxian 'aunt' at every opportunity, Wei Wuxian bitching about careless baby necromancers, a revision of Yi City, and Lan Xichen being So Confused All The Time.

Climbing Up That Coastal Shelf by Sour_Idealist. The Untamed. A post-canon fic in which Jin Ling realizes _no one_ is keeping an eye on Wei Wuxian. Then he learns what a self-sacrificing idiot his genius uncle is, and decides if no one else is going to claim this guy, he absolutely will because he needs all the help he can get. The Jin sect will never be the same. Featuring the return of Mianmian, So Many Family Feelings, Wei Wuxian scaring the Jin elders, poor communication skills amongst cultivators, and Jin Ling being possessive.

The Sword and the Shield by 29Pieces. Good Omens. A post S1 fic (written when there was only S1), in which Aziraphael is an absolute badass. Featuring the sort of angel where 'fear not' is the sort of reassurance one needs, and Aziraphael isn't saying that.

A Friend of Mine by CowGayKermit. Umbrella Academy. In which Klaus' buddies from Vietnam put 2 and 2 together and get 'that kid on the news is _our Klaus_ holy shit'. Featuring a ton of OCs that have been through shit and don't take kindly to anyone being mean to their brother. It's wild, I love it, I will take a million versions of this please.

Arc Tremors by MountainRose. The Avengers. An old-school post-movie fic where people move into Avengers Tower, this time because Tony failed to hide just how poorly he was doing after the Chitauri rolled through town. Featuring Giant Mutated Seafood, medical drama, everyone gets to be a little over-protective and tetchy (as a treat), and the bots being adorable. I love this era of Avengers fics, I will live here forever.

Shades of Grey Spill From My Veins (bleeding ink all over the page) by Reverie. The Untamed. One of my all-time favs, a What If WWX Grew Up In The Nie Sect fic. Seriously, this is one of my comfort fics, I love it so much, just read it.

Work Day by Saintlygames. The Watchmaker of Filigree Street. So much lovely fluff about two of my favorite boys and their daughter. Honestly, this is just the sweetest. Featuring Thaniel being too competent for his own good, Mori using his powers to spoil his husband, Six tolerating hugs as best she can, and did I mention the fluff? SO FLUFFY I COULD DIE.

There are so many more (for srs, there's at least four more Untamed I could put on here right now, without searching), but this is a good place to start!

Anyway, I did a thing!

I wanted to make some comics about MDZS AUs that I think about, and I also wanted to try out this new brush (which is why dog!WWX looks inconsistent af). Also, puppies ^v^

About this AU:

Basically, everything is canon until WC throws WWX into Burial Mounds. WWX becomes a dog demon and solos Sunshot Campaign with the cultivation world as his extras (he don't need the amulet).

Post-Sunshot Campaign, everyone fears him more than in canon and kinda gives the Jiangs the eyes when they still interact with WWX (read: JC can't help petting WWX).

Wangxian actually communicate!

Then, WWX rescues the Wens (because WWX quickly found them via his nose, he was able to prevent WN from dying) and takes Yiling as his territory. Some sects tried to hunt WWX, but dogdemon!WWX is OP, so they learn to just leave WWX alone, treating him as some sort of wild animal.

LWJ and the Jiangs (+JZX) secretly visit WWX sometimes, and Wangxian also make lots of pups!

ough we made it. okay first of all it is my professional (ha) opinion that this series has better impact if watched within a span of ~2 months and not 7-8 months. really allows the emotional payoff to be that much fresher in the mind. next time I rewatch, I'm going to have to set aside solid chunks of time and then really commit to not liveblogging. last time I only liveblogged text reactions, which did cut down on time. but it might be impossible to refrain. it's just more fun this way!

I love jin ling so much I really do. I think the reason he's so much more compelling to me than lsz is that he has really bad habits, and he can't control his emotional reactions. he screams, he runs away, he cries really loudly, he threatens. but despite his anger and his fear, despite going through a horribly traumatic night, he sends his dog away because wwx is afraid of her. he puts someone else's need before his own, and he acts against his own impulses because he cares about someone else and wants them to be okay. and I appreciate the effort that takes, and the love that shines through even a prickly and touchy exterior

ohhh wwx watching jc leave. very weighted look. this is the last time he sees jc in canon. he smiles a bit, but doesn't talk. what's there to say? I can only hope the temple events sink in after a while and they awkwardly resume at least talking

I've noticed this episode that wwx breaks out the 🥺 a lot more with lwj than I'd expect, compared to the smiles. I like that - wwx enjoys fun, but with lwj he also gets gravitas and sincerity, which i think he needs in his life bouncing around and pretending like things just shake off him

I never particularly cared about the answer. there's nothing preventing nhs from living in luxury and power for the rest of his life, making new friends and indulging every one of his interests. sure, it's sad his only family is dead, but I really think he'll be okay. nhs's emotional fulfillment rank a little lower on my priority list than 'wen ning being able to live in a community' or 'lxc being able to e=leave seclusion' or 'lsz rediscovering his heritage' or 'xxc and a-qing's souls' or I'll say it even 'wwx and lwj's freedom to have mindblowing gay sex'

Do you have any tips for writing Jin Ling?

SORRY THAT THIS IS A MILLION YEARS LATE AHH!!

So, it's interesting because, now that I'm thinking about it, I don't think that I actually write canon!Jin Ling very often. Most of the things that I write where Jin Ling shows up, it's an AU where his circumstances have either changed drastically or he just doesn't exist (as in Peony to Lotus). Writing a Jin Ling whose parents lived will be a very different kid to the Jin Ling that we all know and love.

I suppose I would say start by looking at themes that continuously come up for him in canon--his parents and their absence in his life, not wanting to be looked down on, being independent, being seen as competent, argumentative, fearing vulnerability and people who invite him to be vulnerable, Fairy. Can act aggressive when he is caught off guard or embarrassed (WWX saving him from the cursemark) but doesn't actually seem to be too invested in his reputation being hurt (not being shamed when he's asked 'you named your dog FAIRY?' His response was basically 'Yeah, and what of it?') He is brave, even sometimes foolhardy and will often rush into situations, both social and otherwise, without thinking first. When I'm trying to be consistent in my characterization of people, I often keep a list of traits, quirks, and reminders for myself about them. Usually I derive these from watching their source material again, but also other places--like other media or things I experience in my day to day. For example, if someone has a really different way of looking at something than I do--like a situation or conversation or even just a movie--sometimes I think about what sort of character might have that same outlook (not immediately, generally, I can finish conversations 😂).

Example: this is currently my list about Lan Qiren in the A-Fu Verse:

Can be physically affectionate when worried

Chills out a little after LWJ was punished in CQL/future

Canonically ‘instructed [twin jades] in an extremely strict way’ and ‘hates people who misbehave’

Shows care by pointing out the thing that can go wrong--caution, pessimism

interesting question, nonny. tbh i don’t think that jc would get a dog post-canon. see, even if wwx himself has run off to play happy lovers with lwj, that doesn’t mean that the memories of wwx hiding behind jc in fear of the dogs wandering around have suddenly disappeared or become invalid. though jc loves dogs, i think they have too many memories and feelings associated with them to ever get one for himself again.

wishing fandom would be a bit more cautious before using the word 'traumatised'

#better yet can we just put 'trauma/traumatised' up on the high shelf where no one can reach it #like on one hand i'm pretty sure people are just using 'this character is traumatised' as short hand for #'this character went through some experiences that negatively affected them' #which is like fine. but that's not what 'traumatised' means #wwx was not traumatised by the burial mound‚ the massacre of lotus pier‚ or anything else that happened in his first life #the events from jzx's death to nightless city can be described as a mental breakdown HOWEVER wwx does not show any signs of lasting trauma #from these things #the only thing he canonically actually shows a trauma response to is dogs #which is important !! because wwx is extremely good at rationalising away every single bad thing that happens to him #being needlessly whipped? its for the good of his sect‚ he's enduring it for the sake of his shidi #being ambushed? well‚ he can see why jzxun did it‚ he almost feels bad for him... #the /only/ thing he remembers from his time on the streets is dogs #he can't rationalise dogs attacking him. to him they will always be vicious & monstrous and nothing else #imo all his fear & everything else is dumped onto this one thing that he allows himself to be scared of #and this is reason number 1298475 why i loathe the idea of wwx going through exposure therapy #just let him have this one thing that he actually allows to affect him
