Human Touch (Cover Reveal)
A couple years ago I was in a rut with writing. A couple? Seriously, A.J.? Itā€™s been five years. Back in 2019, I was in a rut with writing. My editor, Larissa Bennett, challenged me, literally, to write a story I didnā€™t want to write. I told her about an idea I had but was hesitant to write because it was a ~GASP~ love story.Ā  ā€œYou should write it,ā€ she said.Ā  I said, ā€œI donā€™t want to,ā€ like aā€¦

The Concepts: Chuckie
On June 29, 1993, I wrote my first short story. If you were a member of my Patreon page, One Step Forward, then you know that story is called, Chuckie, and was based on a nightmare I had multiple times. You also know how the story came about. But here, at Type AJ Negative and this thing I call The Concepts, you probably donā€™t know anything about that. Today, I give you the storyā€”the full storyā€¦

Just What's Going On Here 1/03/2023
One thing I want to do this year is promote my work more. Iā€™ve done a poor job of it over the last few years. Sure, I post stories here, and occasionally, I post information about a book but those have been sporadic at best. That means information about new books, old books, reviews and goings on. That also means more posts, some of them that will simply read like this one with a title similar toā€¦

Why Believe?
For the last month or so I have been posting one word on social media almost every day, mostly in the mornings. That word? Believe.Ā  Why believe? Before I answer that, let me give you some context. Three years ago my wife joined a fitness group. This group consisted of a few women around the world, but mostly in America. At one point, I think around December of the first year my wife was partā€¦

Little Witch--Halloween 2023
Little Witch Thereā€™s a witch at my door and she wonā€™t go away. I saw her as I drove up the street, coming home from work. She wore a black dress, black cape and black pointy hat. She was short and slightly hunched over as if time had beaten her down. She turned her green face toward me. A wart sat on the tip of her long nose. She carried a white bag with a crudely drawn pumpkin face on it. Theā€¦

Ally's Story
Ally sat on the floor in the bathroom between the bathtub and the toilet. She had moved the trash can before sitting down, knocking it over in her hurry. Tissues lay scattered on the floor around it, along with a used tube of toothpaste and a couple of toilet paper rolls. Her mascara made black streaks down her cheeks from the tears that fell from her eyes. Her knees were pulled to her chest. Sheā€¦

Hold Me At the End of the World
The weather lady said to stay indoors. She added find a safe place away from windows and for all that is good and holy, do not stay in mobile homes. Those were certainly going to be carried off in the wind when the storms hit, and they were going to hit. A radar map appeared on the television. It was a future look, some four or so hours from then. The entire state was covered in green, the colorā€¦

Concepts
With every book Iā€™ve put out, I have always added notes at the back of the book or at the end of each story. Iā€™ve always loved when authors do this, but so few do. To me, this is like getting an inside look at the process of coming up with a story. Itā€™s a sneak peek into the mind of the author.Ā  Sometimes thereā€™s not much to the process at all. It can be as simple as overhearing somethingā€¦

Don't Snoop
The following is a memory that was triggered when I made a sandwich to take to work with me.Ā  * ā€œDonā€™t snoop,ā€ Grandmomma always said when I was being nosey or poking around in places I had no business poking around in. ā€œDonā€™t snoop.ā€ My grandparents lived in an old two-story house in what some call the mill hill and others call the mill village. I called it home. I spent a large chunk of myā€¦

Shelter From the Rain Let me preface this story. I wrote the original version of this story in 1995. It was one of the first pieces I wroteā€”not the first, but one of them. In 2021, I reread this story and thought it could use a massive facelift, something that could make the story have a more satisfying feel to it. It only took me a couple of hours to rewrite it and Iā€™m happy with the way itā€¦

A Stitch of Madness
In May of 2016, my short collection, A Stitch of Madness, was released by Stitched Smile Publications (such an appropriately named press for the collection, I add). It was based around the three definitions of madness: Madness: extremely foolish behavior. Imprisoned for the murder of his best friend, Johnny Cleary sets out to tell what happened on the day Bobby ā€œBusterā€ Lennon died, but are theā€¦

Daddy Cursed the Wind Caitlyn was seven the first time she heard her dad swear for what seemed like no reason. He had been digging a hole in the backyardā€”thatā€™s something she didnā€™t get right then either. Gray clouds hung low. A storm was coming, but he was out there in his work pants and a tank top with spaghetti sauce spilled on the front. Wind had begun to pick up earlier and was starting toā€¦

Bill Bill pulled up to the bus depot in his beat-up white van. It was early, the sun still not quite up, but enough so that the world was gray instead of dark. He sat for a moment, the headlights cutting a swath in the dying darkness. The station had seen better days. Those days were also some of the worst ones in Billā€™s life.Ā  A picture was taped to the dash, one of two white kids before lifeā€¦

A Time To Remember We sat on the ground near the Thomas family grave site. The grass was still short for that time of year when winter was waving goodbye and spring was taking her own sweet time arriving. It was mid-afternoon. The sun had begun its slow decent and would be gone in a couple of hours. A soft breeze blew through the cemetery, ruffling my hair and sending a chill into my arms. Iā€¦

This Place Chet sat alone in a blue chair that might have been meant for a beach, but instead was around a metal firepit with chairs of the same type. A slight breeze blew through his hair. A car went by, a song he didnā€™t know blaring from it until it was off in the distance. There were too many people, mostly younger than him. He didnā€™t know this place, had never been there until that day, butā€¦

I Love You, Dog The boy was born on a Wednesday, the same day his father picked up a puppy from the shelter. Though the world was a scary place at first and thoughts were only emotions and feelings, the boy sensed the puppy. The puppy sensed the boy, as well. It wasnā€™t long before the puppy was sleeping on the floor in the baby room. Not long after that, the puppy and the boy connected inā€¦
