Crabapple blossoms, or hǎitáng in Chinese.
My copy of The Husky and His White Cat Shizun vol 5 came in the mail yesterday, so I sat under the haitang blossoms while I read it. I can see why Chu Wanning loves these flowers so much and why Mo Ran would have wanted to give his beloved Shizun a branch of them.

Good morning! I just found your other blog by chance this morning. I wanted to say thank you for doing what you do for BSD. I’m not big on the fandom or anything like that. I just really like the show itself. I just recently picked up from season 2 after literal years of finishing season 1 (thinking it was done after that). I find myself with much free time these days and have been filled with ennui, so with my collected list of anime to watch and a number generator, it came across BSD.
I’m currently continuing the story now and came across episode 18. I searched everywhere I could for a translation of “irmão” and it kept giving me Portuguese as the language it is from. I found that hard to believe since it seemed a lot like Spanish to me, but alas, I couldn’t find anything relating it to Spanish. ^^; So when I did a general search of just the word and thinking it might relate to the story of Diablo (which I have yet to read), the first link on Google was your other blog! It came across the direct post you made about that part of the episode. I am ecstatic to even have found that.
I apologize for the long ramble here, but I wished to thank you for the work that you do running such a wonderful blog like that! Not only did it help me understand the episode more, I enjoyed the history you provided.
Thank you so much for your message! You made my day!
There are so many interesting facts and references about the authors in BSD! I'm really happy my post about the Akutagawa/Hawthorn interaction was helpful to you. I have a tag for #fun facts on my main blog that I used for facts I've found about the real authors that might help me understand the BSD characters. There is also a Fun Facts page on my website that has everything organized a little differently if that is easier to use.
I hope you continue to enjoy BSD!

I just finished reading the new Seven Seas translation of The Husky and His White Cat Shizun vol 5. I've read 2ha before. I know what happens. And I still was a sobbing mess for an hour after finishing this volume! I would die for Mo Ran and Chu Wanning! They both deserve the world! I will never get over them! I've laughed and ugly cried more while reading 2ha than any other book.

In the last lifetime, love had made him possessive, so he'd become selfish. In this one, love made him accepting, and thus he became selfless.

Many things in this world can't be evaluated on appearance alone. Sometimes, even digging one layer down isn't enough to unearth the truth. I remind myself always to rein in my emotions before rendering judgement, whether on people or actions - it pays to be cautious.

People were wont to shed tears of gratitude over an evil person's single good deed and viciously latch onto a good person's single mistake.

"It is rather that even a theoretical knowledge of other cultures helps up to understand our own, because we can attain some clarity and objectivity about our own social institutions by comparing them with others."
"When a psychiatrist asked a Zen master how he dealt with neurotic people he replied, 'I trap them!' 'And just how do you trap them?' 'I get them where they can't ask any more questions!'"
"The individual no more acts upon the world than the world upon the individual. The cause and effect turn out to be integral parts of the same event."
"Would it really do to find out that our game is not serious, that enemies are friends, and that the good thrives on the evil? Society as we know it seems to be a tacit conspiracy to keep this hushed up for fear that the contest will otherwise cease. ... Imagine how the Christian conscience would react to the idea that, behind the scenes, God and the Devil were the closest friends but had taken opposite sides in order to stage a great cosmic game."
"Opposites and differences have something between them, like the two faces of a coin; they do not meet as total strangers. When this relativity of things is seen very strongly, its appropriate affect is love rather than hate or fear."
"...in Buddhism liberation is called awakening (bodhi) just because it is release from social hypnosis."
"The philosophy of wu-wei or noninterference implies ... that people must accept themselves as they are. This will disturb the social order far less than splitting themselves apart to strive after impossible ideals."
"It is, however, possible to see that his comparative [societal] 'rat race' need not be taken seriously, or rather, that if we are to persist in it at all it must not be taken seriously unless 'nervous breakdowns' are to become as common as colds."
"The difficulty of Zen is the almost overwhelming problem of getting anyone to see that life-and-death is not a problem."
"The disturbed individual is not so much the historical throwback in whom sufficient ego strength somehow failed to develop; he is the victim of too much ego, too much individual isolation."
"The Eastern ways direct their students to 'look within,' to find out the self, only to dispel the illusion that it is inside as distinct from outside."
"Not caring is the parody of serenity, just as worrying is the parody of concern."
"This is the loneliness of liberation, of no longer finding security by taking sides with the crowd, of no longer believing that the rules of the game are the laws of nature. It is thus that transcending the ego leads to great individuality."
"But to say, 'You must be spontaneous' is the flat contradiction at the root of every double-bind."
"At this point the patient simply stops pretending. He does not learn to 'be himself' as if that were something which one can do; he learns rather that there is nothing he can do not to be himself. But this is just another way of saying that he has ceased to identify himself with his ego, with the image of himself which society has forced upon him."
"The ways of liberation make it very clear that life is not going anywhere, because it is already there. In other words, it is playing, and those who do not play with it have simply missed the point."

We're supposed to "fake it till you make it" and "don't show any weakness." But when you are really good at both of those then people expect more and more from you. When you need help no one notices or they don't believe you, and eventually you get worn down to the point you can't fake it or hide your weakness anymore. And everyone who pushed you to your breaking point wonders why you gave up.
Maybe that is why this page from a book of Taoist meditations hit me so hard when I read it:
